Looking at the adventure of faith

This year I had the opportunity to visit Germany and spend time in Worms. There is no doubt that Martin Luther (and a number of other Reformation stars) are well celebrated, in this rather middle of the road German town.

So when can we draw from such a wealth, when so often we see a secularised Western Europe, plagued not by something bubonic, but a deeper disturbing of the soul and being, a malady of rationalism, atheism, humanism and so on?

The Reformers were seeking to rebalance and redress a system of injustices, not necessarily dismiss the very fabric of the culture, even if they resulted in the plainer church across the way from the Catholic Cathedral here.

In Europe, a considerable spiritual life and vitality has remained in the East, perhaps more evident in the religion and belief statistics than the West. With the exception of perhaps states like Estonia (notably more secular than Ukraine or Poland), we see dynamism and hunger in spiritual life that presents a challenge to Germany, France or the UK even sometimes.

New immigration, has been seen to add to the mix, and not the long-feared overwhelming of Islam that some imagine. Dynamic believers from Africa and other parts of the world are bringing a fresh flavour to the European church, even in places like France, or The Netherlands and elsewhere.

Having just passed the milestone of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation - perhaps the cry for a new transformative sea-change in Western Europe, within the church walls, is a needed kick-starter.

Here's what usually happens: Someone does many good works and endures much suffering. That person becomes aware of producing fruit. In other words, they are aware of achieving something through preaching or some other method. Then that sweet poison begins to make the person think, "Oh, I have now done something that will make God notice me and be merciful to me." In this way, little wild branches begin growing alongside the true branches. These wild branches steal the sap and energy from the true branches so that they don't flourish. That is why the Gardener must be alert. He has to restrain such arrogance and presumption by constant application of the Word. Christ is saying here, "You aren't clean because of what you do, what you suffer, or the fruit you produce. You wouldn't have done any of these things if you hadn't already been pruned and been made into good and true branches. Only God's Word can make you clean." It must be present at all times. The Father sends various kinds of suffering, danger, anxiety, need, and temptation to you so that you may hang on to God's Word tightly and so that it may work powerfully in you. In this way, he humbles you and teaches you that you can't make yourself clean. Your suffering doesn't make you clean before God. Yet it drives you to reach for God's Word and hold on to it more tightly and firmly. This is how God exercises your faith."

Translated, it is “Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise. So help me, God, Amen!” What he actually said was: Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (for I do not trust either in the pope or in councils alone, since it is well known that they have often erred and contradicted themselves), I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. May God help me. Amen. We can learn so much from this. Luther never intended to start new religions. All he wanted was to correct the Catholic Church. He asked for the existing to change, but lead by God he did so much more, and arguably better. Diet of Worms

The Diet of Worms (January-May 1521) was the assembly convened by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor to address, among other issues, the works of the reformer Martin Luther (l. 1483-1546) who openly criticized the Church. Luther was told to recant and, when he would not, was charged with heresy, marking his official break with the Church.

Diet of Worms ... really?

I understand the term "diet" means formal assembly, and Worms is a city in Germany, but these guys should have met somewhere else. At least in Frankfurt, Germany just a bit north. Then it would be the "Diet of Frankfurt." Hot dogs are way better than worms.
