I just saw a news report on Dialysis that made it look like death sentence. It is not. I am currently on Dialysis and have been on and off my entire life. I started Dialysis when I was 9. The biggest thing is to follow the special diet they put you on.
There is fluid restrictions, no dairy, you can not eat anything with high phosphorus or hight potassium. I cut out most processed foods. I drink about 25ozes a day. This is because your healthy kidneys get rid of all that & the Dialysis machine can only pull off a small amount without taxing your body.
I drive myself to & from dialysis 3 days a week. I am on the machine for 3 hours. I was on 6 hours when I started, but because I am good at my dialysis diet my time was lowered.
It is a long wait for a transplant. I received a kidney from my dad when I was 10 , so I was only on Dialysis a year the first time. I went to the dentist before Jr high high and he was going to fix my teeth. I have no enamel due to medications. I had a tiny abscess that went to kidney & killed it within 24 hours.
I was on Dialysis 10 years after that before getting another kidney that lasted 23 years. By the way I went to school after or before Dialysis during that time. I graduated high school & started college. I think of Dialysis as more of an inconvenience than anything else. I sit there & watch TV. I would probably be doing that at home.
Dialysis is not painful. I have a great fistula that they do stick needles in but the skin is numb so you don't really feel it. I just relax and let it clean my blood.
Now if you choose not to follow the special diet you could have issues with high potassium which gives you terrible charlie horse cramps. I have seen people get them bad so for me it is worth giving up French fries & cheese.
I still take my dog for walks even right when I get home from dialysis. I seem to get a burst of energy right after. I can go on vacations, & just set up appointments at a dialysis center closest to where I am vacationing. If done right it makes you feel better.
The end goal is eventually another kidney transplant, or if I am really lucky I can try out the artificial kidney they are working on. That's my dream. But until that time dialysis is not a death sentence. It is just a way of life. To stay slive.

Things I can do myself on dialysis:
- weigh myself
- line the machine
- prep the lines so they are ready to use
- prep my needles
- do my blood pressure
- do the maths to work out how much fluid needs to be taken off
And today I got shown how to sort my heparin so I can start to do that myself soon

I headcanon Kaisa as being just slightly hypotensive. I’m thinking normal blood pressure around 11/7. Most importantly, I headcanon that occasionally it may drop and she knows, but doesn’t do anything about it.
So sometimes she’ll be in the library, and will be on her feet for too long, or maybe it’ll be too hot and she hasn’t let go of her cape, or maybe she even has been so caught up in her job that she hasn’t eaten or drink water in three hours. And she’ll begin sweating, and ignore it. Then she’ll feel lightheaded, and think it’s fine. And then her eyesight will get hazy, and she’ll think ‘nah, I can take it’. Then her hearing will sizzle and her mind will spin and she’ll still do nothing. And if someone’s nearby they’ll begin noticing she’s pale and unresponsive, and that’s because she’s trying to not fall down and wondering why she’s seeing dark spots. But mostly, that probably happens when she’s alone, so when she refuses to sit down and drink water/eat/lie down, she’ll just faint for a bit (on the hardwood floor. Ouch.) and get back within a couple of seconds (and just go about her day like nothing happened)
Anyway the place I’m trying to get to is: imagine Kaisa is hanging out with the Hilda gang for some reason, and at some point they notice the blood draining from her face and her eyes going unfocused and then she just drops unconscious on the floor with no prior warning. Imagine the chaos. Imagine Hilda about to slap her and being held back by David while Frida tries to remember the cpr training they had in the Sparrow Scouts. Imagine Kaisa waking back up suddenly and scaring the living shit out of them
Kaisa already has such undead vampire vibes, I just think that’d be hilarious 😭😭
#damn that’s how I know the academia is getting to me. I’m headcanoning BLOOD PRESSURE LEVELS#(btw I feel like I need to mention: having a lowered baseline blood pressure is GOOD. it’s PROTECTIVE. it HELPS.#walk around with a satchel of salt and you’ll be fine)#this post was brought to you by: me almost doing the same thing yesterday during my semiology practice lol#I walked away when I felt weak#went to get some water. came back to the patient’s history taking bc I felt fine#and then I felt worse! and I figured it’d be pretty weird to drop on the foot in front of the patient#poor dude was just there for his hemodialysis he was already being nice to the bunch of students#he did Not Need to see the chaos that one of them fainting right then and there would wreck#thank God some of the older students saw me trying to breathe deep on the chairs outside the dialysis room#they came to take my pressure and give me water and salt. angels <3#that’s the good thing about studying in a hospital. if I feel bad I’m already there lmao#anyway. I’m right about Kaisa.#kaisa hilda#the hilda librarian

Kari it's 3 AM and I just got pain meds and since I for some reason chickened out asking my actual nurse I'm curious: what made you decide to go into nursing?
if we’re being wholeheartedly honest the job security :pensive: but the longer and actual reason is that my dad is a nurse and healthcare ( but nursing especially ) is such a versatile field that you can go to just about anything in and still make a pretty good salary and with enough experience do travel nursing which pays more and allows for you to travel , all expenses paid , etc etc . it’s literally like the hardest thing ive ever done and i think going to nursing school is going to be worse ( i don’t think it i know it will ) but it’s a very rewarding field
#kari answers#and i think that ‘rewarding’ doesn’t even have to necessarily mean you watched a patient go from worse to better in the sense that their tx#was successful and now they’re all good but even in like a hospice sense . which might be morbid#but the whole point of hospice is to allow for a smooth transition into death instead of suffering for several months on end ( living off#machines …. dialysis … breathing and feeding tubes . what have you ) and also becoming a reoccurring figure in these patients and their#families lives when it could potentially be the worst time of their life#alls that’s to say it’s a good field . very rewarding#healthcare posting

Hit my head on the window panel hard enough to draw blood, then had an unfortunate meeting with the table's leg and slightly luxated my knee, and also annihilated a few glass ampules by scattering them on the floor, today's shift was just splendid
#medblr#disaster medblr club#the knee thing made me cry in front of everyone#which really just hammered the mood home#but then i got to start cvvhd dialysis for the first time on a patient#so all in all the day ended on a positive note

Using Remote Patient Monitoring Software for Dialysis Patients
Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) software can be a transformative tool for managing dialysis patients, offering real-time tracking of critical health data, and improving patient outcomes. Dialysis patients, who often face chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD), require frequent monitoring of vital parameters such as blood pressure, fluid levels, heart rate, and electrolyte balance. RPM software facilitates continuous, remote monitoring, allowing healthcare providers to intervene quickly when necessary.

Can You Give Me Some Clothes?
I had the privilege of being an acute dialysis nurse for more than twenty years. I cared for many of them from the time they initiated care and saw them on follow up admissions. We exchanged stories about our lives, families, and even exchanged pet stories. I loved them, even if they were difficult, and many(but not all) loved me. One day, one of my favorites, Mrs. Smith, was in the hospital,…
