Robstar Week Day 1: Self Reflection (Prompt: Friends to Lovers)

Howdy y'all, it's Robstar Week! After missing out last year, I knew I had to try and get some sweet sweet Robstar prompts in for this year's week, and here we are! As I've mentioned previously, a few of this week's stories are actually going to be ones I started but never finished last round. More on that later, but this particular prompt is all from this year.

The "friends to lovers" prompt was an interesting one, because what sounds like it should be straightforward becomes a bit odd with the long and winding road of "sort of together but not" that Robin and Starfire went through before finally making their relationship official. I ultimately decided that, rather than take the obvious route of setting this around the end of that road, I would explore one of the earlier turning points in which they seemed to start getting that little bit closer. In the process, I ended up doing a lot of exploration on Starfire's feelings and motivations during "Date with Destiny." That episode has a somewhat frustrating place in the fandom because of how people who take only a surface look at Starfire use it as a basis to assume she's just some crazy jealous girl (despite the fact that Robin is, ya know, completely and openly hating the date with Kitten and she has literally no reason to be jealous). But if you take the time to seriously think about Starfire's character and her experiences around this point in the series, her over-the-top reaction to Kitten becomes absolutely fascinating.

Self Reflection

Starfire stood in front of her bedroom mirror, smoothing out the little wrinkles in her dress and checking her hair to ensure it was properly brushed and styled. She was quite fortunate to have some Earth formalwear for the occasion of this “Junior Prom,” and if she were being honest with herself, she was more than a little pleased for the chance to wear it.

Now, what else did her research into the prom event say she needed? An entry ticket, which Robin had managed to procure for himself on the grounds of being a hero on a mission, so she would simply do the same. An accessory or two to complete her “look,” for which she needed to go back and scrounge a little more in her closet. And preferably a gift for her date. A dead plant for him to wear was traditional, so that could –

Starfire shook her head, her nose wrinkling a little in displeasure. “Robin is not your date,” she reminded herself aloud. She leaned over her arms on the dresser and scowled at her reflection. Why had she even thought that? The whole purpose of this venture, aside from gathering intelligence on Kitten, was to protect Robin from her depredations. Robin and Starfire were not even romantically involved.

The scowl in her reflection softened into a thoughtful frown, and she let her gaze drift to the side and tapped a finger on the dresser’s wood. Earth courting rituals were so very strange, and perhaps that was her problem. From her understanding, humans began “dating” long before they were ready to even consider marriage, and could begin and end such relationships on a whim and almost exclusively without the aid of a sanctioned matchmaker.

Except on occasions like tonight, when this gremplork’s supervillain associate was forcing Robin to join her on an official date-outing that felt uncomfortably similar to a political marriage. As a princess of Tamaran, Starfire was only too familiar with the occasional necessity of such a union, and she had long ago accepted that she may one day need to enter into one for the good of her people. But Robin was no prince nor king, and Killer Moth’s demands were excessive and inane. She was not going to let Kitten take advantage of them.

Starfire’s scowl returned, and she stared deep into the reflection of her own narrowed eyes. “So why does it feel like I am defending my own mate?” she muttered to herself.

What should have been an easy answer was more complicated than she cared to admit, and maybe that part was her own doing. She was well aware that she harbored an attraction to Robin, but she had yet to discern whether he felt the same for her. For such a dear friend, he could be most obtuse at times. Perhaps she should have tried harder to understand.

Starfire sighed and pushed away from her dresser to seek out accessories for her outfit, but her thoughts continued unabated. Until recently, she had mostly been content to consider him a close friend – her best friend, really. It was only practical, not just because she was not sure of his thoughts on the matter but because there was still a chance she would eventually be called back to Tamaran.

Perhaps this change, this new instinct niggling in the back of her mind to claim a mate and defend that claim from rivals, was nothing more than a natural result of her recent Transformation. It was the point at which Tamaraneans reached sexual maturity, after all, and she had anticipated some change in her brain chemistry to go with it. She was sure that had at least something to do with her recent agitation, but at the same time, the bashful attraction that lay behind it had been there for a while.

In all, it seemed as though everything was coming together now to force her to consider what she felt for Robin – truly consider it, not just as a nice thought in the back of her mind but as a serious question of where to go from here. But was this an appropriate time to act on her feelings?

After testing most of her admittedly small collection of jewelry against her dress and finding it ill-suited, Starfire finally settled on a pair of long white gloves instead. Robin had already left to finish his own preparations, and with the late time she would have to procure her ticket and anything else she needed quickly. She was about to head out the door when she paused by the mirror one last time, watching her own contemplative expression as she pondered the stray thought that had led to this time of self-reflection in the first place.

After several moments of consideration, she decided to bring Robin the dead flower after all. She should probably not seek his own affections outright – regardless of everything, attempting such a bold move now would only complicate the mission further – but if nothing else, the show of support might help to lessen Kitten’s ludicrous claim to him. And maybe, for now, that would be enough.

I was thinking about that headcanon I posted about how, when in a relationship, Winter will often subconciously match her lingerie sets to her partner and you know what? because I'm filth incarnate, I'm gonna go a little more in-depth for her ships:

SNOWBIRD / WINTER x QROW. Winter's lingerie tends to shift to black pieces, primarily made of lace. A bit more on the strappy side, a little bit more of a display lingerie than functional pieces she could wear out during her day-to-day tasks. Considering how rarely she wears black, it's quite a statement piece on her. A shame they don't seem to last very long...

IRONWINTER / WINTER x JAMES. Usually something with minimal colour, though not in the same blasé gray of her daily wear matching sets. Despite not so much being a colour match to James, there is an attention to detail with these sets. Usually a bit more showy than she would get away with wearing under anything. These pieces also tend to be more intricate: she knows James is the sort who has no problem with taking his time.

TOUGHLUCK / WINTER x CLOVER. Less intricate styles, because there is less of a need to try and impress him. Still, the colour is quite intentional: she subconsciously chooses it to match his eyes, although it's difficult to find the exact shade of seafoam green. They usually wind up more of a teal. ( i don't write this ship super often so this may evolve the more i play with it )

WINTERWITCH / WINTER x SHION. Lavender or another shade of purple and usually with quite a few little details. Much like James, Winter knows that Shion appreciates the effort that goes into her lingerie, and is likely to take just as much time taking it off as putting it on would have taken, so any extra effort is appreciated.

PUPSICLE / WINTER x MARROW. Usually, just a simple, lacy white set. Wait, white? But that doesn't particularly match Marrow's colouring or aesthetics? You're right. That's because Marrow is one of the people who always made Winter feel like she was... simply enough. There was less of a need to try and mesh to fit him. This isn't to say this ship is better than any of the others, but there's a purity to it that I think is subconsciously reflected. She's never felt like she needed to pretend to be something she wasn't.

The Rose-Beauty Twins

There is no such thing as bad genes in the Rose-Beauty family. Both Briar and Rosabella can say with confidence ‘my mom’s cooler than yours’.

Damascena and Delilah Rose-Beauty are twin sisters with opposite personalities, both attending Ever After the generation before the show takes place. Where Delilah is less likely to jump into a relationship than her twin, she has a very…bad…taste in men, something she and her daughter Rosabella share. She likes the bad-boys and the rebels; those guys who are ‘no good’ for anyone else. But, like her sister, Delilah isn’t looking for serious love either. She’s more likely to sit you down to address your past trauma or poor grades than for an actual date. (Delilah finds love too with Valor’s estranged beast of a brother, Vincent, making Briar and Rosabella double-cousins). Delilah is opposite her sister in the family department; she worries about not being a good mother, and prefers the company of books rather than people.

Random Headcanons and Facts:

- Damascena and Faelyn Thorn (Faybelle’s mom) are incredibly close friends.

- Delilah is two minutes older than her twin, making her the ‘big’ sister. This is why she has the favored of their two destinies.

- Delilah is on the debate team, while Damascena helps run Ever After’s radio station and newspaper. (Damascena also does music for school events like dances and mixers)

- Absolutely no one expected Damascena and Valor to hook up. Many thought Valor was actually Snow White’s destined true love.

- Delilah and Damascena are roommates (not by choice) and they hate every second of it despite living in the same room at home.

- Damascena and her mom don’t get along due to differences regarding the outcome of the Sleeping Beauty legacy. She’s not close with her dad either for the same reason.

- Contrary-wise, Delilah is very close to her mom and dad and is the ‘favorite child’, as she’s looking forward to her story playing out.

RIVALS TO LOVERS! RELATIONSHIP HEADCANONS WITH NEJI HYUGA

The reader and Neji most likely met in the Academy when they were both young. Neji was a prodigy of course and excelled in everything. Especially Taijutsu.

However there was another person in his class that had extremely advanced skills in Taijutsu, his only match. You.

The two of you would often get partnered up during spar sessions in the class, and would often come in very close ties which infuriated Neji to no end.

He did not like this at all. He was determined to be the top of the class, and would train extra hard when he got home to secure that spot. He would not be average, nor beaten by some shinobi from some average background, not at all.

He had an intense dislike for you. How were you able to match him in his ability? You weren’t a Hyuga, nor from any special clan whatsoever. So how were you able to beat him when it wasn’t even in your destiny to beat him?

He definitely often makes scathing remarks towards you during your time at the academy, but most of those remarks stem from his own insecurities and anger of not being strong enough.

Eventually when graduation time came, Neji got assigned to his team, but the rivalry with you was still going strong. He doesn’t face you in the Chunin exams but he wished that he did, maybe for old times sake, or to gain the satisfaction of beating you.

Most likely to gain the satisfaction of beating you, and to heal his wounded pride.

However his viewpoint slowly starts to change after his match with Naruto. He finally found peace and realized that people can change their own destinies, which also leads to try and understand you better.

At first when he starts acting more nicer to you, your like “is this the same Neji that I knew???” Yeah he didn’t leave a good impression on you with his condescending remarks, and arrogant behaviour, but he’s grown out of it.

The two of you start hanging out more often once he’s simmered down in his haughtiness, you often train together, and talk about various different topics.

You both find yourselves getting closer together. The regular sparring sessions always seemed to have a tension that never went unnoticed. It was clearly visible to all that saw you both together, but it wasn’t to the two of you.

Neji of course realizes that he has started to feel different things for you, beyond what close friends would feel. At first he tries to ignore those feelings.

He’s scared to get close to someone like that and doesn’t want to make himself vulnerable, in case they either reject his advances or if something bad happens to them.

He is a very stubborn individual and will push down these new feelings of his, and he won’t acknowledge them, you will probably have to be the one to confess to him, and when you do, he can feel his heart start to soar.

Of course he’ll keep a calm look on his face and simply say that he returns your affections, but inside he will be the happiest he’s ever been, and if you look close you will be able to see a faint pink blush on his pale cheeks.

Moving on towards actually dating. Neji is a very polite and courteous boyfriend. He takes “duties” as a lover very seriously. He always tells you to take care of yourself, and brings you things like flowers as gifts.

He still goes full strength on you during sparring as, that’s just how he is, he respects your strength and thinks that going “easy” on you would be disrespectful towards you.

If you are on a mission with him he’s going to be on watch like a hawk. He knows you can take care of yourself but he cares a lot about you and looks out for you too. If you act reckless during the mission, he’s not going to let you live it down for a few days.

He can be soft when he wants to be, sometimes when visiting the Hyuga compound and spending time with him in his room, you’ll both just sit next to each other and enjoy each others presence. He doesn’t strike me as a very physically affectionate type of person, but he would sometimes hold your hand.

His love language is more so acts of service. He likes to show you how much he cares about you, instead of touching you or telling you that he does.

Whether it’s helping you arrange your things, cooking food for you, bringing extra supplies for you during a mission in case you forgot some, he always remembers the little things.

I can definitely see him letting the words “I love you” slip out during an argument though. When you and Neji argue, he’s very stubborn, so even if he is in the wrong, it will take a while to get him to admit that. He’s a very prideful individual. If you are both stubborn then you might go for days without speaking to each other before one of you two caves in.

Neji hates to see you cry. If you cry then he will immediately soften and apologize, he hates seeing you cry that much. If he is the cause of your tears then he feels much guilt, but if someone else is the cause of your tears then whoever they are better sleep with one eye open.

You two were probably arguing about something that wasn’t too significant but, Neji got rather upset about it and of course he never backs down so it was starting to escalate until he blurted out “Well yeah I’m mad!! I’m mad because I love you!”

It suddenly became very quiet between you two, until he started stammering “W-well, I-I” you chuckled and spoke softly “I love you too Neji” and he felt his heart soar, he has officially stopped working. No wonder people say falling in love drives you crazy, because it was most certainly driving him crazy.

Neji is very protective of you, he loves you to the point that he’s sure he’d sacrifice his life for you. He now believes that destinies can indeed be changed, and he’s sure that he wants to spend the rest of his life with you.

You most likely feel the same way, after all, even if he has his flaws how can you not fall in love with him? With the way he treats you and stays true to his words and is one of the most honourable people you know.

Neji Hyuga and you are in love with each other no doubt about that, and the two of you will continue to be in love with each other forevermore. While your relationship does have its ups and downs, one thing about it is that your bond is unbreakable and everlasting.

I need to write more Hopeless Romantic Mario. It’s a headcanon I’ve long held for him, but I’ve got to explore and lean into it more.

Mario, as a child, unironically loving sappy fairytales and princess movies because he loves imagining himself in the role of the prince, a dashing hero who always comes through for his dearest.

Mario, as a teenager, never really getting into the dating scene, if he dates at all; he’s convinced that The Universe will give him A Sign when he meets The One, and he’s perfectly happy to daydream and make plans for how he’s gonna be the best partner ever while he waits.

(Luigi trying to lovingly suggest that maybe The Universe is expecting Mario to put in a little bit of leg work too, because for how down-to-earth his brother normally is, he’s got this weird holdover about things like soulmates and destiny and he could be waiting ‘til the day he dies if no one else talks sense into him.)

Mario, as an adult, falling into some strange storybook-looking world and meeting a particular princess, and oh wow, his heart’s never raced so hard just by looking at someone. And though he’s instantly smitten with her, he cares less about sweeping her off of her feet and more about learning who she is, what drives her, what her favorite foods are, where her mind wanders off to when she’s bored or stressed.

Mario, who has always been in love with the idea of being in love, learning firsthand that romance can be just as mundane as it is magical — and coming to cherish that mundanity above all else, because it’s the little moments that teach him more about her, about himself, about them, and it’s all just so priceless.

Just! Hopeless Romantic Mario who remains a hopeless romantic all his life and it works out beautifully for him! Hear me out!

This is a Kendra headcanon that I like a lot but that I'm not sure will ever make it into anything I'm writing.

So: Kendra occupies a pretty strange place in the wider setting of Buffy. She's the first Slayer other than Buffy we meet, but the show itself is pretty aggressively uninterested in her. After the two parter she's introduced in, she's not mentioned again until Becoming, when she comes back to be killed off. She'll only be mentioned a couple of times after her death. Years and years after the show ended, Joss Whedon retroactively gave her full name as "Kendra Young", even though Kendra herself tells Giles that "[she] has no last name".

And the little scraps of backstory we do get about Kendra don't really feel consistent with anything we learn about how Slayers and Potentials operate, either. Kendra was identified as a potential Slayer when she was very small, and her parents (apparently willingly) gave her up to be raised by her Watcher, a Mr Sam Zabuto. She's very, very rules-focused, and familiar not just with the Slayer handbook but with more general details of the supernatural (for example: she's read about Angel before, which Giles himself hadn't, and she can cite sources about the Order of Taraka that Giles seems not to have read).

Meanwhile, the Council didn't know anything about Buffy or Faith until they were both Called, as far as we can tell, and even Potentials like Season 7's Kennedy who were identified at a young age don't seem to have been treated much like Kendra. Kennedy was trained to use weapons, but she doesn't seem to have separated from her parents (at least not based on how she talks about her childhood to Willow) or expected to memorize the contents of multi-volume arcane texts that even a Watcher like Giles describes as being "a bit stodgy" (in fact she tells Willow that magic "seems like fairy tale crap", so her theoretical knowledge must be pretty limited). Something is strange about Kendra. She's not like the other Slayers.

Kendra herself tells Buffy that "[her] people" take Slaying very seriously and that she sent to live with her Watcher at such a young age that she "doesn't really remember" her parents. And ... okay, well, let's be honest: this is mostly just bad writing. It can be explained by a combination of the show trying to position Kendra as, at all levels, an opposite to Buffy [Buffy lives with her mom so Kendra doesn't; Buffy's parents don't know she's a Slayer so Kendra's do; Buffy dislikes studying so Kendra must excel at it; Buffy has friends and dates so Kendra can't, etc.] and not caring particularly if the results add up to anything consistent. And it can, more damningly, be explained by the Buffy writers' regular automatic assumption that non-white people living outside the USA are necessarily more "primitive" and more in touch with old, pre-modern traditions, that they are less interested in the happiness of the individual and more respectful of authority and in doing what is best for the collective. That Kendra's people are like the Incans who sacrified the girl who we only know as "Ampata" (not her real name, of course), or the Shadow Men who activated the First Slayer, or Jenny Calendar's Uncle Enyos (who explicitly contrasts the beliefs of his "tribe" to those of "the modern man").

But what if things were different? What if this wasn't just another example of the show's constant background racism?

As it happens, as early as Season 1 we were already introduced to a group of people who take Slaying very seriously and who pass knowledge of the supernatural and the occult down to their children. People who think of themselves as having "destinies" and who make "tiresome speeches about responsibility and sacrifice". What if this group is, unbeknowst to her, the people Kendra is refering to when she tells Buffy about "[her] people"? What if Kendra's parents were Watchers?

We know that the Council don't always identify Potential Slayers at a young age, but they did manage to identify Kendra, at a young enough age that being a Potential is practically all the life she knows. What could explain that better than if Kendra herself grew up surrounded by Watchers? As soon as they decided to start looking for nearby Potentials, they'd have found one practically under their feet.

What if Kendra's parents had been expecting to train her as a Watcher, but now found themselves having to face the fact she might be Called as a Slayer? What if that's why her training focused so much on reading books and studying theory; why it made her into somebody Buffy describes as a "she-Giles"? What if her parents were hoping that she would grow up never being Called, until she was old enough that she never would, and she could become the Watcher they were always hoping she would be?

Well, we might ask: why then does Kendra claim not to remember her parents? And why does she tell Giles she doesn't have a last name?

This is, in fact, something of a mystery in any case: if Kendra's parents knew she was a Potential and were happy for her to be raised by Watchers -- even if they weren't Watchers themselves -- why was it necessary for them to cut off all ties with her? Why did she have to be raised in isolation? It can't have been for secrecy, because these people would have known that Kendra was a Potential Slayer. Again, this isn't something we see the Council insist on for any other Potential Slayer. Was there some ulterior reason that Kendra couldn't be allowed to know who her parents were, or to talk to people who might have known them?

Well, remember what Quentin Travers accuses Giles of having in Helpless: "a father's love for the child ... and that is useless to the cause". How might somebody like Travers reacted to finding out that a Watcher had potentially given birth to a Slayer? Would he trust them to raise her? Would he allow it?

What if, instead of cheerfully giving her up, Kendra's Watcher parents -- or perhaps parent, singular -- had to agree to raise her as if she wasn't theirs, just to prevent the Council from swooping in and taking her away? What if the reason Kendra thinks she hasn't got a last name is that, if she'd remembered what it was, she'd have noticed it was the same as somebody else she knew? What if, while Buffy had a Watcher she often thought of as a father even though they weren't biologically related, and who was punished for being too much of a father figure, Kendra had a Watcher who was related to her, but who was under Council orders not to tell her that he was?

What if "Kendra Young" was born "Kendra Zabuto"?
