Mac and Tendy! (Desert Skies)
If anyone can get Tendy in a laughing fit, it’s Mac. Guaranteed.
Tumblr media
And two more versions bc background work is not my friend~

I just binged the first season of Desert Skies (podcast) and DS FM (side podcast), and now I’m sharing it with everyone I can because it deserves a larger audience! It’s so well-made, with fun storylines, characters, and music, and couldn’t be more wholesome. It’s a pretty quick listen (season 2 is coming tho!) and easy on the soul. Love these two and will hopefully be drawing more of them (and the other characters!)

Ok so I’ve been listening to a wonderful podcast called @desertskiespodcast and oh man it’s so good. I don’t have my digital art handy at the moment so I wanted to try my hand at colored pencil, which isn’t quite as professional but it gets the job done. Here is my take on designs think Tendy and Mac.
more designs to follow. I’ve been working on many of the other characters too, just haven’t had the courage to post yet.
be sure to check out my other blog but I’ll likely only be posting from this current blog. @accumulastation

Heyyy gimme podcast recs pls thank u
done.
I definitely recommend Rude Tales of Magic. It’s a dnd podcast with most of the actual play removed so it’s mostly roleplay and story telling. Each episode averages about an hour or so. Basic premise is that a handful of college students fuck the world up by completing a hazing which in this case is a demon summoning ritual. They have to find out how to fix the world.
If you like modern scifi definitely look into Midnight Burger. They’re a really well written fiction podcast and have incredible characters that are just really well done. You’ll somehow like and hate all of them as much as possible in the best way. Episodes average about 30 minutes to an hour or so. It’s about a time/space traveling diner and the residents/employees try to help solve a problem every place they land. (Think dr who but with more drama) There is an overarching plot that comes together so look out for that.
On the topic of fiction……. Monstrous Agonies. Great fiction podcast and it’s just super chill and comforting. Episodes are about 15 minutes so it’s a nice in between tasks listen. The idea is that it’s an radio advice segment on a station for “liminal Britain” aka the monster world to put it plainly. There’s very good advice there and the intermittent ad reads will have you giggling.
I don’t want to spend all day here so I’ll only put one more. In a similar vein as Monstrous Agonies, Desert Skies. Another fiction podcast ik ik. The voice acting in this one is insane (it’s the same person the whole time) and just super well done. Episodes last around 25 minutes, sometimes a bit more or less. The premise is that when you die you show up on a highway and get to this fuel pit stop. I’m not going to spoil it anymore you just have to experience it.

Has anyone talked about desert skies and how a lot of the sphere movers are based on deities??? Like Hephaestus was obvious to me cuz duh I read Percy Jackson and the prime mover is definitely giving G-d but I was looking at the transcripts when I saw the spellings of some of the names others names and I was like hold on a minute...
so I looked it up and huehuecoyotl, xochitlicue, land her sister Cihuacoatl are named after Aztec deities specifically, a god of mischief, a goddess of flowers+life/death (kinda like Persephone which also partially sparked this thought spiral) and a goddess of midwives/fertility/death in childbirth. Which I think is interesting given the events of season one
Even ones only briefly mentioned like ceto of the 27th sphere being named after a primordial sea deity, or morfran of the 7th sphere being named after a warrior in Celtic myth. I know that's not technically the same but I think that's kinda neat and wonder if anyone else noticed

MIDNIGHT BURGER S2 SPOILERS:
i'd pay so much money to see even older leif's journey across the astral plane
Game: choose a podcast character (or three), and then a second, different podcast to send them into for a while.
It could be to bully them, to give them some relief, or even just to see them interact with the characters that live there.

I just want to say that I absolutely adore Desert Skies and it has helped me through a very tumultuous and difficult time of my own. Thank you for creating this wonderful show that to me is like a balm to the soul. Tendy, CASH, and Mac will always have a special place in my heart 💕 (and yes that bitch Corson too).
The first half of Desert Skies season 1 was made in a large hollow room, the latter half was made in a very unsturdy uncomfortable blanket fort.
The mic I use goes for $100 brand new which is nothing compared to many, and I’ll replace it with the same one if it ever breaks.
First episodes I ever made were made using free software, and the only reason I use a different software now is because it’s part of the Adobe subscription I have for other products I need. They both do the exact same things.
I never worked in sound engineering and still have no idea what half the things I do to clean up the audio are actually doing. I don’t understand the terms. I press buttons till it sounds right.
I never wrote a fiction script in my life. I didn’t finish college. I’m in recovery from a serious mental illness and have been for many years.
I’m ridiculously unorganized.
I didn’t have time to make a show. I operated at a loss for nearly a year and after that only made enough to pay for my hosting fees and software. I had a family I supported and they’re loud (but I love them).
I did it without a team. I did it without previous voice acting experience or other actors. I did it with massive amounts of self-doubt. I played every character.
I did it anonymously for like the first 6 episodes because of how afraid I was.
I took 3 month breaks between some episodes and then would have 2 episodes release back to back. At multiple points people thought my season had ended. It took me almost a year and a half to finish my 13 episode season
I still made it after some really mean reviews. And after constantly being compared (often kindly. often negatively) to a massive show I’d never heard of.
I made it after all the articles saying I’d never get listens because the podcast world is flooded. I continued making it after I found out I wasn’t doing something new, that there were like 8,000 other shows in the category.
Next month DS is on track to hit 1 million downloads.
I’m so glad I made it. It’s brought me so much joy. And I write none of this to brag, but I’m damn proud of what I’ve accomplished.
I’m just here to tell you this:
THERE ARE NO RULES
THERE ARE NO RULES
THERE ARE NO RULES
You can make one or a hundred shows if you want to, because there are no rules
You can make it by yourself or make your grandma voice act for you, because there are no rules
You can record it on a cassette tape and mail it to random addresses, because there are no rules
You can make it for one person, or for yourself, because there are no rules
You can make it a found footage or a full cast or improvise it or release one episode a year for a decade, because there are no rules
You can advertise it, or make social accounts, or don’t. There are no rules
You can record it into your phone, or your moms phone, or into a Talkboy because there are no rules
The only thing you can’t do is never make it. That’s not allowed
