Desdemona

Desdemona s a character in William Shakespeare's play Othello (c. 1601–1604). Shakespeare's Desdemona is a Venetian beauty who enrages and disappoints her father, a Venetian senator, when she elopes with Othello, a Moorish Venetian military prodigy. When her husband is deployed to Cyprus in the service of the Republic of Venice, Desdemona accompanies him. There, her husband is manipulated by his ensign Iago into believing she is an adulteress, and, in the last act, she is murdered by her estranged spouse.

Desdemona Character Analysis- Patriarchy and Misogyny: Part 1

I'm using this blog to share my thoughts on various characters and themes in Shakespeare's ouvre, starting with Othello, then moving onto Hamlet and going from there. Discussion encouraged, DMs are always open.

Analysis begins below.

Critics such as Jardine and French assert that Desdemona is ultimately viewed through and punished by the patriarchy in 'Othello', and I think it's undeniable that her place as a woman, a wife and a daughter, are primary factors that contribute to her abuse and death throughout the play. Primarily, her relationships with Othello, Brabantio, and Roderigo's infatuation with her all demonstrate this.

In Jacobean/Elizabethan England, there wasn't much legal action a woman could take, especially within marriage against her husband, and, in an upper class background, Desdemona is perhaps particularly unfortunate in this, as she is regarded as valuable property to first Brabantio, before she "betrayed her father" (I.III) in marrying Othello. This means that, as she is a prized asset to Othello, she has no defence from his fury when he assumes she is a "cunning whore" and he "[strikes her]" publicly. Her sex renders her effectively a lower class citizen with no recourse but to attempt to appease the men around her.

This is where her attempt at reconciling Othello and Cassio is used against her by Iago, and, because of her limited course of action, her being a woman has forced her hand into becoming more suspicious to Othello, her aiding Cassio further convinces Othello that she has been unfaithful to him.

This is the trap that Desdemona is placed in not by Iago's plot, but by her social standing: any attempt to help herself or Othello results in his jealousy intensifying and only secures her fate. In V.II, Desdemona, by far the most blameless victim in 'Othello' is brutally strangled (or smothered, depending on the production) and, as though infected by the patriarchy that has killed her, defends Othello in death "Nobody, I myself, farewell." This unfaltering allegiance to her abusers cements her as a tragic victim whose relationship with Othello evokes great sympathy from a feminist audience.

I'm going to do more of these, at least covering Desdemona in more detail, it's very late/early where I am and this only really covers her in regards to her relationship with Othello briefly, and I'd love to blog more about the play if people are interested in that. By some accounts, Desdemona was played by Margaret Hughes, one of the first few actresses hired by the King’s Company in 1660. A cast list from a production of Othello nine years later lists Hughes as Desdemona. Despite the long gap in time, theater critic Rosamond Gilder argued in Enter the Actress, a role “belonged” to the actor or actress who first played it to the public’s satisfaction and was only given up “on retirement or under extraordinary circumstances.”

Queer Railroad Headcanons

Desdemona (she/her) is bisexual, at least that's what she's going with right now. She suspects she's actually a lesbian, and once the synths are freed and the Railroad inevitably disbands, she hopes to explore her identity more. Personally, I imagine she'll find she's very butch.

Carrington (he/him) is gay, but he's very insecure about it and has only told Desdemona.

Deacon (any pronouns) is openly genderqueer and achillean but if directly asked he will always say that they're cishet with the same tonation as when she tells the jetpack story at the end of tradecraft.

Tinker Tom (he/they) is aro/ace. He has proposed the dies of learning to perform gender affirming surgery but Carrington won't let him.

P.A.M (it/it's) does not consider itself to have a gender or a sexuality.
