'Theme' Songs for the Cast of Confused Spirit
Hello! I've already shared our main three's playlists, so might as well share these too lol (all it took was one person saying share and I JUMPED on the opportunity, thank you for enabling me Lucky <3)
All the main cast has a song that I think 'fits' them in some way, with the glamrocks having two-three each. And by fits I mean I heard these songs and was then put in a death grip by my subconscious which told me 'this is their song' and I said 'okey dokey!' Anywho, enjoy!
Parts & Infastructure Team:
Savannah: Humble - Ren
Pete: 1922 - Box the Oxford
Liv: Kilby Girl - The Backseat Lovers
Jesse: Cough Syrup - The Young Giant
Tyler: Slow Ride - Foghat (I can take no credit for this one, beloved ao3 commenter TiredThoughts shared this and they're so right for it)
The Glamrocks (and Monty):
Freddy: Mr Loverman - Ricky Montgomery; Line Without a Hook - Ricky Montgomery
Bonnie: Anna Sun - WALK THE MOON; Faster Car - Loving Caliber; Helpless - The Regrettes
Chica: Serotonin - Girl In Red; Good Together - Shy Martin
Roxy: The Love Club - Lorde; Popularity - Julian Moon
Monty: Hard feelings/loveless - Lorde; West Coast - The Neighborhood
Misc.
Abby: Cup of Coffee - Julian Moon
Bri: Whiskey Fever - Dorothy
Derrick: Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash (he is a cowboy, this should be expected)
Lizzy: Playing Like You Used To - Amor Amor
Michael: Still Not Dead - DREAMERS, American Teeth, Wes Period; I've Been Dead All Day - Bayside (a little on the nose I know lmao BUT they fit in perfectly in certain places of the story like I wish I could explain to you-)
David: Fat Lip - Sum 24
I'll update with Vannessa/Vanny's when she appears in the story, kind of spoilery if I share now :) (but i stg they fit SO WELL THEY ARE SO VANESSA CODED LIKE GAHH)

[Marriage of convenience]
[This is a fanfiction collaboration with @ship-ovnik]
[ 1 / 2 ]
Tumblr media
Due to an open conflict with Marquis Ellen and his daughter, the queen of the empire, Duke Eckart is forced, under pressure from three factions, to sit at the same table with the Marquis and come to a peaceful resolution of the conflict (I have not come up with a reason, but I will be glad to listen to your options in the comments). Almost all proposals are extremely unprofitable and unacceptable for the duke - the loss of territories, mines or spheres of influence. Seeing the reaction of the head of Eckart, the Marquis suggests the most "harmless" thing - to marry one of his sons to the daughter of the viscount, who has served the Ellen family from generation to generation, or to marry his daughter to the prince.
For a duke to give up a child for his own benefit is worse than death, a person who grew up in love and married for love will never be able to give his child to a loveless marriage with a light heart, and because of exceptional benefits, unlike a marquis. He was already ready to yell at Ellen, as he waved him off and suggested that he think about it until tomorrow. After all, there are no options, the conflict must be resolved in the shortest possible time, because the emperor himself is closely watching all this.
Enraged, the Duke leaves. All the way, he can't find a place for himself, his heart is squeezed with pain and awareness of the precarious situation his family is in now. When he returns to the house, Derrick is waiting for him, who hoped for good news, but when he saw his father's dejected face, he understood everything.
"Whatever you choose, everything will lead us to certain death," he said, disappointed. "But if one of us gets married, there will be a chance.." "Don't talk nonsense, Derrick! I will not give up any of my children for money or any benefits!" "Father, but.." "I need to be alone, go to your room, we'll talk later.."
Derrick could not argue with his father's decree in any way, and left his office. On the way to his room, he crossed paths with Reynold, who, it seems, again did had a fight with Penelope. After telling him the latest news, he did not attach much importance to his brother's strange grin, which barely flashed after surprise and anger.
Penelope learned about the latest news from the mouth of the returning Reynold. She was surprised by his appearance, because just a few minutes ago, they were arguing, almost tearing their voices out of rage and anger towards each other.
"Maybe you'll be of some use if you get married? You're not creating anything but problems for us"
Hurtful words broke her heart and unable to stand it, Penelope herself came to her father and asked for an engagement.
"If this is the only thing that can save the Duchy of Eckart – I agree, father" "Penelope, what kind of father do you think I am, if you think that I will marry you to one of them?" "You are first of all a duke, and then a father, You always told me so when I made a scandal for which you had to answer" "Penelope…" "I have done too much wrong to you, Father. I know my place and I'm not asking for more than what you gave me. If you allow something else to be taken away, it will affect the reputation of the family and financial opportunities. If Derrick or Reynold marries the daughter of the houses that are subordinate to the Marquis family, they will also get the Eckart family under power… is that what you have worked so hard for?"
The man was silent for a long time, pale with grief. He rubbed his face tiredly and frowned at his daughter. But after a long silence, he spoke again.
"The Marquis did not talk about who my daughter should marry from the two princes. Therefore, we will use his offer against him – you will not marry the younger prince, but the older one. I will immediately send a messenger to him, and I will offer a good deal, which we will seal with your marriage."
Penelope clenched her hands on her dress, but did not contradict, even though she knew about the terrible reputation of the Crown Prince and could not even think what fate awaits her as a wife.
"Penelope, I will do everything possible so that you don't get hurt in any way and feel like a guest in the palace. As soon as I can prove that our family is innocent and the Marquis is behind everything, we will dissolve the marriage and you will return home. I promise."
Squeezing his daughter's hand, the duke tried to smile encouragingly, although it turned out to be extremely sad. Of all his children, only Penelope decided on such a serious act and helped him find a way out, and how tragic it is for her father to understand that he will have to give her to the imperial family as a future wife to one of the princes.
That evening, a letter arrived from the imperial palace – the Crown Prince agreed to the deal and is waiting for Penelope to arrive at the palace with the duke.

What are your favorite books/genres to read? You said in a really old ask that you liked Ender's Game, and I like it too. Ender's Game is a really character-driven story - the world building only matters when it affects the characters. That describes Empathy for the Devil a lot too - it's just one of the reasons why I like it so much.
Awww thank you!! It's a big compliment to be compared to one of the books I really like!
And let's see, that's a good question. I try to read widely, though I admit I'm a slow reader most of the time!
I've read a lot of queer young adult fiction. I really enjoyed the Simon Snow trilogy by Rainbow Rowell, or One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston, Loveless by Alice Oseman, and She Gets the Girl by Alyson Derrick and Rachael Lippincott. Really fun, really queer character driven books!
I mix it up with other genres like horror, sci-fi, suspense, and mystery, too! I had a big Stephen King phase, and loved Percy Jackson growing up. A great find in recent years was Yellowface by R. F. Kuang - such a great story that you can't stop reading because the mistakes the protagonist makes and her psychology are fascinating. You wanna turn away but you can't
I've enjoyed a bit of Brandon Sanderaon in terms of recent sci-fi, but still have TONS of his books ahead of me.
I'm also reading a really cool book right now called Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle. Fun shit, love the horror and sci-fi in there!
So many good books, not enough time!!

Rules: post the first lines of your last 10 fics posted to ao3. if you have less than 10 fics posted, post the first lines of all your fics.
got tagged by @waveridden and i....have been writing and publishing fic extremely infrequently lately but here we go
wire and glass and stainless steel
loveless was beginning to get the idea that i&t had very little respect for the work that went on in archives and revision.
when all of your body's burning up
the only picture in the house of your abuela is in your parents’ bedroom, framed on the dresser. you don’t see it until you’re twelve, until the room’s pristine nature and crisp, white sheets become less foreboding and more of a challenge; until your parents trust you to stay at home by yourself after school instead of with your tía.
thought i saw stars, but it was the rain
the horizon gets bad weather days, sometimes; days when the air is thick with feedback that creeps up the back of your neck, or clouds of birds blot out one of the many suns, or the humidity breaks and bloodrain comes pouring out of the sky. today is one of the latter. derrick watches from the safety of the screen door as the droplets hit the deck and explode into red mist, scattering over the wood, turning the exterior of the beach house into a crime scene. making its outsides match the inside - raw, visceral, haunted.
guitar / loneliness / blue planet
since people started disappearing into the black hole, the dale have been throwing parties almost every weekend. there’s no straight answer you can get as to why they’re doing it. some say it’s for remembrance, some say it’s to celebrate the people who are finally getting out of the horizon. personally, shaq thinks it’s to keep the morale up.
sugar, butter, flour
“I’ve been reading some shit on the internet about black holes,” Hank says.
maybe i'll be the lucky one
the first time she ever sees brisket friendo, silvaire looks at him and thinks, that’s trouble.
if i can live through this
it’s supposed to be the play of her career.
keep me, keep me
a story the woman will never tell (and one the statue, banished to another universe, will try to omit from memory) is this:
at the start of a moment
the fridays’ last series in the season is at home in hawai’i, and fitz feels relief wash over her as the plane touches ground and taxis in the runway.
stuck
the pies collected 10! “okay,” case says, chewing on the end of the plastic straw he used to stir creamer into his coffee. “so, walk me through it.”

End-of-year book ask! I’m curious about 3, 22, and 24
Hai hai! Such good questions! 😁
3. What were your top five books of the year?
In no particular order:
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Taylor Jenkins Reid
Elle(s), Kid Toussaint *graphic novel
Loveless, Alice Oseman
Fence, C.S Pacat *graphic novel
Himawari House, Harmony Becker *graphic novel
22. What’s the longest book you read?
It would have to be House of Sky and Breath which is the second book in the Crescent City series by Sarah J. Maas. It has about 800 pages!
24. Did you DNF anything? Why?
I don’t like when I don’t finish a book. But yes, there a couple, unfortunately! 😭
She Gets The Girl, Rachel Lippincott and Alyson Derrick. I’m not sure if I didn’t like it or maybe I didn’t like one of the girls. Either way, I want to give it another shot to see.
The Wrath & The Dawn, Reneé Adheih. This was a fast no. The set up and rhythm just wasn’t for me. In retrospect, I think it was poetically written but not for me.
We Hunt the Flame, Hafsah Faizal. I’m not sure why I didn’t like it. But I was almost done with the book too and I just couldn’t finish it for some reason but I know it’s really popular and folks love it!
and the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. I left the series at like book 3 and was like “okay, that was good enough for me. I’m done now. No more.” I just didn’t find it interesting at all.

Brian K & The Parkway Set To Release “Straight Through” featuring Cat Popper March 1
Tumblr media
Brian K. Pagels and Stephen Russ, the DC-area duo, Brian K & The Parkway, are releasing their second single, “Straight Through” featuring Cat Popper, known for her band Puss N Boots with Norah Jones and Sasha Dobson and for her work with Jack White, Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson, among others, who provides guest vocals on the track out March 1, 2024 – Pre-Save HERE. But how did a new band that’s just starting out secure Popper on their debut album?  The answer is simple, just ask. Pagels has been a fan of Popper’s vocals since he first heard her sing on Ryan Adams & The Cardinals’ album Cold Roses. “I was immediately struck and moved by her voice,” says Pagels. So, when he heard she was working on releasing her own solo material, he decided to take a chance and reach out. “I filled out a form on her website and asked her if she would consider singing a duet with me,” says Pagels thinking the message would go into a black hole of webforms. “Instead, she responded within an hour with ‘damn dude, I love this tune!,’” says Pagels. After emailing back and forth and talking on the phone “everything came really naturally from there, including the vocal arrangement which I was honored to lay out for Brian and Cat,” says Russ. “They both brought their own touch to it, Cat delivered an incredible vocal take, and that’s the magic you hear on the song.”  Adds Popper, “This song was so fun to sing on and was stuck in my head for weeks!” Brian K & The Parkway just released their debut single “Wind The Clock” January 12 – Listen HERE. On release day, Unrecorded named it a “best new track.” Mayhem Rockstar Magazine said it’s “…a light, infectious composition” while Alchemical Records says the song, “…really highlights this focus on songwriting and storytelling while embracing an energetic and uplifting musicality that is guitar driven, rooted in rock and roll…” “Wind The Clock” which opens with a lilting guitar riff and drum groove, is a commentary on tribalism and the extreme black and white thinking that has materialized in society today. The song offers a means to expel the frustration of it all while expressing a spirit of hope and solidarity with those actively fighting for a better world despite all the forces working against them. “I wanted it to be an anthem for ‘my people,’ those who value peacebuilding, justice, equality, democracy, and universal human rights,” says Pagels. The duo are set to release their debut album, Killing The Bear, March 29, 2024. Most of the work on Killing The Bear was done by Pagels and Russ, but it was mastered by Justin Perkins (North Mississippi Allstars, The Replacements, Lydia Loveless), co-engineered by Zac Thomas at The Jam Room in Columbia, SC, and co-produced and mixed by Collin Derrick. The nine-song collection, a nod to the ‘70s rock sound of artists like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Warren Zevon, is guitar-based, roots-oriented rock, infused with a healthy dose of soul and R&B. Piano and organ play a critical role in establishing the sound along with some horns thrown in for good measure. The duo dubs their sound “coastal heartland rock,” reflecting the fact that their major influences are artists that hail from coastal areas such as New Jersey, Florida, and California, but are known for their own mix of classic heartland rock. Pagels and Russ formed Brian K & The Parkway in 2021. Pagels is from Springsteen’s hometown of Freehold, NJ, Russ is from the Carolinas, both share an innate connection to The Boss and are acutely inspired by him. Although the guys refer to the band name fondly as “very Jersey,” it denotes Pagels‘s name and the fact that The George Washington Memorial Parkway connects the route between their Northern Virginia homes; Pagels lives in Alexandria, Russ lives in Arlington. Killing The Bear’s overarching theme is about our ever-increasing inability as humans to deal with the source of our problems and instead, look to surface-level, near-term solutions, and then declare immediate victory. The songs serve as vignettes about the things we do to cope, for better or worse. Now, with their debut coming, Brian K & The Parkway can’t wait to get out on the road to play it for audiences up and down the east coast beginning this March. They will be kicking off their east coast tour with a special all ages album release party at Jammin Java in Vienna, VA on March 29. Tickets are on sale now HERE. Additional dates below, including a stop in Brooklyn, NY with Diane Gentile. More dates to be added soon. what were your favorite and least favorite books you read each month and why??
SOMETHING TO DO YAY I read 64 books so far (and that's probably the ending number so) here ya go
None of these books are part of the SMP boycott as far as I am aware.
January:
Favorite: The Honeys by Ryan La Sala
When I tell you this was totally unexpected holy shit. It's YA Horror and follows Mars after they wake up to their twin sister, Caroline standing over them with a knife trying to kill them in their sleep. They go to the camp where Caroline last was to try to figure out what happened leading up to her breakdown and ultimate death, where they encounter a clique Caroline was part of called 'the Honeys.' This book, I was very happy I was reading it when my roommate wasn't home/asleep because I was up at 3 am screaming while I was reading I stg
Least Favorite: Good Girl, Bad Blood (A Good Girls Buide to Murder #2) by Holly Jackson
I couldn't even tell you what happened in this book. All I know is that wanted Pip to stop with the god damn antics and just go to bed I stg
February: I actually only read two books in February so uh
Favorite: On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton
Ngl, I do not remember what happened in this one. It was just ok
Least Favorite: American Royalty by Tracey Livesay
This is supposed to be a take on the Prince Harry/Meghan Markle romance but god this was just so boring to me. The royal family in this was based off real life though with how insufferable they are
March: I only read one book this month whoops
Favorite: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
I will recommend this book until I die I swear this is my roman empire. This book took me all month to read but is so good and made me cry and I need to read the second book ASAP but it's so long that I keep putting it off
April:
Favorite: Takes from the Cafe (Before the Coffee Gets Cold #2) by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
This series is so beautifully heartbreaking and deals with time travel to see the ones you love knowing that no matter what happens you can't change anything
Least Favorite: A Tale of Two Princes by Eric Geron
I know that the book is YA and that the boys are teenagers in this but all their antics were so overly juvenile and petty that I couldn't deal with it. Like I know that they are kids, but this was so bad. I was hoping someone would just like ground them or something just so they would stop
May: I apparently only read two books again in May
Favorite: Loveless by Alice Oseman
Alice Oseman never misses tbh
Least Favorite: Paper Towns by John Green
I remember loving this in like middle school/early high school and decided to reread it and that was a mistake
June:
Favorite: Caraval by Stephanie Garber
I only picked this one up because it's the first of a trilogy that is connected to another trilogy that I wanted to read but god I love the sisters in this book
Least Favorite: The Golden Spoon by Jess Maxwell
This was just ok. It's like Great British Bake Off mixed with murder
July:
Favorite: Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee
This book was so sickeningly sweet I stg I think about Dylan and Theo all the time I need to reread this one
Least Favorite: Belladonna by Adalyn Grace
I might come back to this one next year but like I couldn't get past the "I want to fuck death" aspect of this book
August:
Favorite: She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick
Another one that was just so sweet I was rooting for these girls the entire time
Least favorite: A Taste of Sage by Yaffa S. Santos
This is another one where I couldn't tell you what happened except that she can get sick if people make food when they're mad and they fuck on the prep table in the restaurant
September: I only read two books this month and I loved both of them
Favorite: Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
What happens when a white woman talks over the experiences of POC in the publishing world? I wanted to punch June the entire time
October: I also read only two books and really liked them
Favorite: These Hallowed Halls: A Dark Academia Anthology
I'm not normally one for dark academia but I read this book the day I bought it and didn't want to put it down
November:
Favorite: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
I had to reread it thanks to tik tok and it holds up unlike other books I read when I was younger this year
Least Favorite: The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag
This book wasn't bad. It was just ok. I read it and kinda just went 'meh'
December:
Favorite: Stars in Your Eyes by Kacen Callender
Check you TW before reading this because it is HEAVY but god this book had my sobbing at 3 am this was the book where I kept asking if I read the library book or do I read the one I really wanted to and I read it in one sitting it broke my heart and put it together in all the right ways
Least favorite: Just Haven't Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens
I love Sophie Cousens but the first love interest in this felt so cartoony it ruined the book for me

As the red head kept talking he fully turned to look at him. Yeah. “I would say it’s pretty selfish to stay and make everyone miserable.” Though the marriage was chosen without their saying it would be unfair to go through the ceremony. Derrick already had a male lover while Sigfrid himself fancied women and they barely knew each other. At most they had a surface level friendship with respect but it wasn’t love. Love took time. It was built on trust, respect and strong feelings. Who would be fulfilled in a loveless marriage? He couldn’t do that to Derrick. His fiancee deserved to marry someone who loved him. Running away now seemed like the most humane choice. It would be a win-win situation. Sigfrid wouldn’t get stuck in an unhappy role as a wife and Derrick could focus on his own relationship. Running off didn’t mean staying away forever and he could always pay a visit in the future. When he was ready. “You’ve already convinced me, you, whatever your name is.” He paused shortly and added. “Besides, I like the idea of pissing off my mother. I could create quite a scandal by running off with a handsome redhead.” There was a wide grin as he spoke while making gestures with both hands. “I can see the headlines already. ‘Runaway bride runs off with a mysterious red head.’ I bet my mom will be furious.”
Easy? Was it really that easy? His mother would surely not miss him considering how cold she had been acting ever since he was a kid. She had also sent him away before the wedding plans were announced. If Sigfrid decided to run off to the sunset he would probably miss his siblings. Maybe Derrick too. But only a little. If he was going to marry someone it would be on his own terms. His eyebrows were furrowed while he spoke. “My mother has tried to ‘fix’ me since I was a kid. She sent me to a monastery to become a nun and when it didn’t work she found a husband for me. I can’t see why she would ever want to take me back. Not that I would want to go home again.” Only problem was that he had nothing and had never earned money on his own. The closest he had come to honest work was doing chores as a nun. There was a slight movement of his head when a hand patted him. “You know, I always wanted to be an adventurer. I picked my name from a fairytale book, Sigfrid the brave who saved maidens. A pirate hero who stole from the rich and gave to the poor.”

What if the timeloop was hell for Yvonne too? Also the amount of trigger warnings I had to add was insanity.
TW: Manipulation (in the literal sense lol), poison, hanging/strangulation, beheading, murder, impalement, im just going to go with body horror bc i can't think of anything else that describes it, dismemberment, weapons, burning at the stake, starvation, she's compared to a marionette a lot, bleeding out
Word Count: 523
Time after time, Yvonne met them. Handsome, charismatic individuals, who she would be forced to charm and love. Well, not forced to love, she supposed, but forced to act like she loved. Perhaps it was her punishment for the sin of a previous life. She was trapped in a timeloop, in which the gods, or players, as she had come to know them, would choose one of these men, and she would have to charm them into loving her, saying empty wedding vows, performing loveless kisses, all for their entertainment.
After all, wasn’t it fun to control the story? She knows she’d like to. But no. Now watch as the marionette performs, twirling around in pretty dresses, confessing her love for the individual the audience chose, her every move dictated by others, her hand forced forever. Till she gets a confession of love back, till her adopted sister, chosen as the villainess, dies horrifically, till in epilogue episode in which she forces out vows she never wanted to say, till the play ends.
It’s starting again now. The marionette wonders who it’ll be this time. Maybe it’s the handsome and cruel crown prince Callisto, and once more she’ll see her half sister’s face get melted off by poison she’s made to drink. Maybe it’ll be the brave and loyal sword master, who always seems to be just as much a pawn in this as she is. Maybe it’s the sorcerer who brings her into to this hell. Maybe it’s Derrick, but only “platonically”. She doubts this. He lusted after the girl meant to replace her, who says his feelings towards the real her are any different? Or Reynold, aggressive, angry Reynold who scares her.
She also wonders how the villainess will die horrifically this time while she’s forced to watch. Maybe the poison that’ll stop her heart and melt her face. Maybe tied tightly to a stake as it’s lit. Maybe strangled by the noose that fails to cleanly break her neck. Maybe her head pushed through a slot before the guillotine blade comes down. A block of wood to lay her head on and an axe; a sword that slashes through vital organs while she bleeds out on the floor; rope to tie each limb to a different animal as they all race into different directions; locked in a room with nothing in it to wait for death.
It’s gruesome, but she knows she can’t intervene. Those fates will quickly become hers if she steps even a toe out of line. No one wants a doll with a will, and no one wants a marionette not pulled by her string. If she doesn’t please the selected love interest, well then, the gods of this world make something happen, and now they cheer as the broken doll’s is presented with a vial of poison, seized by guards, and has to swallow every last drop as she drops to the ground, her insides aching horribly; or maybe her limbs are tied together and she lies helpless as she is thrown into a pool of water. Now, she starts again, ready to please the audience…
