🌟 New Walk Published: Dent Head Viaduct to Cowgill and Bleamoor Tunnel
📍 I’ve just added a detailed guide for an 11-mile circular route in Dentdale, starting at the striking Dent Head Viaduct and covering sections of the Dales Way and Dales High Way in the Yorkshire Dales.
🥾 The walk begins with parking beneath Dent Head Viaduct, followed by a stretch along a tranquil road that forms part of the Dales Way National Trail. Along the way, you’ll pass a few small waterfalls before reaching Stone House, where you can take a detour to admire the equally impressive Arten Gill Viaduct. Continuing on the main path, you’ll head towards Cowgill, where you can visit St John the Evangelist Church, a peaceful spot for a rest.
🚶‍♂️ From Cowgill, the walk continues on the Dales Way through picturesque countryside before turning off to ascend the hills. After joining the Dales High Way, the route climbs gradually to Boot of the Wold, then descends towards the aqueduct at Smithy Hill. From here, you’ll follow a trail that runs above Bleamoor Tunnel, passing its ventilation shafts, before returning to Dent Head Viaduct.
🌄 This walk offers varied landscapes, breathtaking views, and several points of interest. For detailed maps and route planning, visit my website:

Dentdale farm sketch | Limited edition fine art print from an original drawing. My sketches start life as hand-drawn graphite images made on cartridge paper. I often work on these with charcoal, oil pastel or Caran d'Ache to create the look I'm after. The artwork is then scanned and finessed digitally ready for fine art printing. This process often referred to as Giclée printing uses the highest standard of printing methods to give gallery quality results that maintain all the details of the original sketch. The graphite pencils I use are Faber-Castel, the oil pastels are Sennelier and the china-graph is Caran d’Ache. The inks are pigment based archive quality (100years+). The heavyweight specialist papers I use are of the best professional quality having a wonderful surface designed specifically for fine art drawings and illustrations. Very limited editions with only ten per size printed. All artwork is signed and includes a certificate of authenticity. The A5 are 5.8" x 8.25" (14.8cm x 21cm) The A4 are 8.25" x 11.7" (21cm x 29.8cm) The A3 are 11.7" x 16.5" (29.8 cm x 42cm) The A2 are 16.5" x 23.4" (42 cm x 59.4cm) Frames not included in price. Book a Holiday Cottage in Yorkshire Dales – Book Howgill House Sedbergh
Tumblr media
Planning a short trip of two-three days to a place where nature makes a balance with man-made architectural beauty. Varied options are available, but spending your time leisurely in Lake District in Sedbergh will be surprising. It is an attractive old market town that is perfect for luxury holiday cottages with its old-world atmosphere – set in the magnificent western Dales of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It has many holiday cottages near the Lake District and close to the rugged eastern fells of the Lake District. You can book a holiday cottage in Yorkshire Dales to explore natural beauty, serenity, and enjoy luxury.
The beautiful town with its narrow streets, little shops, traditional pubs, famous school dating back to 1525, and its 12th Century Church, has been a thriving community for hundreds of years, with a market dating from the 13th century. Dentdale is another place – the jewel of the Yorkshire Dales with its rolling hills and dry-stone walls. It has been stretching 14miles from the windswept moors below Whenrside to the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Rawthey. Book a holiday cottage in Yorkshire Dales and you will surely enjoy the architectural wonders and natural beauty of the area. Here, you can spend more days as the serenity will rejuvenate your mind. Howgill House is a charming 3-storey luxury holiday cottages in Lake District close to the stunning Lake District nestled into the heart of Sedbergh. It is a quaint market town in Cumbria that is perfect for families or friends who are seeking a relaxing retreat in the North Yorkshire Dales.

On St Ninian’s Beach
26th June 2023
I had booked the most basic accommodation on the overnight boat from Kirkwall to Lerwick, a reclining seat. But I had hoped not to use it, preferring the illegal option of staying in my van bed. I had researched on the internet and read that it was something truckers did do. An article from an incident in January of 2006 was easily found, when in stormy conditions three trucks had toppled over during the crossing. On arrival in Lerwick it was found 6 drivers had stayed in their cabs, one stuck there until he was rescued.
Northlink stresses how dangerous it is, yet they are quite happy to let my dog stay there.. do they value his life any less than mine? By circumstance rather than choice, I boarded last, and had to reverse on with the studious attention of all the boarding crew. At the appropriate moment I disappeared behind the curtain. They either didn’t see, or weren’t bothered. Before the boat sailed I was in bed, waking at 7:15 am as drivers returned to their vehicles. The coach driver next to me gave me a knowing nod. It was clear he had done the same.
By 8 am I was at St Ninian’s Beach, about a half hour drive away, in heavy rain and just 9C. Roja and I had breakfast, and I read while Roja dozed and the rain eased, and by mid-morning the cloud cleared and the sun emerged.
This is my second visit of the year to the Wild Atlantic coast, the first being the Costa del Morte in Galicia in February, equally impressive.
The first photo is of the ruin of St Ninians’s Chapel, which dates back to the 12th Century. Before that it was an Iron Age Burial Ground. It’s other claim to fame is that in 1958 a local schoolboy found a wooden box on the site, which contained 28 silver objects of Pictish treasure.

St Ninian’s Isle is quite a spectacular sight from the car park, with its jagged rock cliffs, strikingly green pasture, and it’s shell-sand tombolo, the finest example of one in Western Europe. It is occasionally breached, in storms and at high tide, but today it was at its best, a superb wander though Roja chose not to use it and swim alongside for most of the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The perimeter of the Isle is about four and a half miles, but most who walk as far as the island, then choose shortcuts. As with most of the ocean facing coasts here, the south and west headlands are the wildest and most spectacular. There were a few other visitors. I met the couple in the other campervan at the carpark, from Durham, and prior to that at Dentdale, and we chatted for a while.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were back at the van for 2 pm, and spent the afternoon with the dramatic backdrop trying to concentrate enough to attend to a few business matters.
Last week here was the Shetland Noir Book Festival, attended by writers such as Martin Edwards, Val McDermid, Ann Cleeves and Elly Griffiths. They even had a session here at St Ninian’s Beach. Cleeves write the Shetland series, that has now been adapted for television. It strikes me that the literary body count here on the tranquil Shetland Islands is bigger than most places, with the possible exception of Midsomer.

These rocky outcrops put me in mind of Chris Cameron, who is currently mid-way through his 60 day record attempt for the longest stay on a remote uninhabited North Atlantic rock, on Rockall, 200 miles west of St Kilda, and 300 miles from the mainland. It says a lot about the teaching profession that a guy has to go to such lengths to get a peaceful break. Maybe he won’t return to his post, and stay on Rockall.
Tumblr media
Roja seems unbothered by the various dive-bomb attacks from the sea birds he receives. They concern themselves with him rather than me thankfully. With my untrained eye, those who bombed him include, the Fulmar which comes off the cliffs and hovers in the wind, the territorial Curlew with its recognisable squeal and curved beak from the scrub land, and the much rarer Arctic Tern from its slumber in the grass.
And a ‘spot-the-van’ pic..

'Simply stunning': your favourite cycle rides around the world
‘My favourite ride starts at Sedbergh in Cumbria and meanders down Dentdale, surely the most beautiful valley in all of England. Every foot is pure pleasure. After five miles you arrive at the exquisite cobbled-street village of Dent, with a beautiful church and a great place for refreshment, Stone Close tea room. Then cycle on up the increasingly wild dale to Denthead: the view back down the Dale from the road above the magnificent Denthead viaduct must be one of the best in the land.’

Not the best photo, but this is the where we stayed, in the beautiful Parker's Cottage just outside of Dent in the Yorkshire Dales. Grade II listed, dating back to around 1600. And the water tasted even better than home's. #dent #deepdale #dentdale #england #yorkshiredales

The Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way: Day 3
After a better night sleep than the night before, I got back on the road. I was still worried that I may not make it to the next stop, so I started with a softer pace. The first part of the road gets into the Kingsdale, which was a very quiet ride without many cars within a sharp valley. At the other end of the dale, the road climbs a hill and then descend into Dent, which is a very nice town though I have to walk a bit because of the cobblestones. In Dent I had a coffee to warm up and then continued my trip into the Dentdale, climbing at the end another hill (the longest of the day). During the climb the road passes under the Dent Head viaduct (in the picture) which is not as long as the Ribblehead one, but still impressive. Once at the highest point of the road, the path flattens and starts to go down into the Wensleydale. There I stopped in Hawes, which is probably one of the major villages I visited during my trip. In Hawes, I visited the Wensleydale Creamery to enjoy some cheeses and buy some snacks, and the Dales Countryside Museum, where I learned a bit more about how the dales were formed by the effects of glaciers, the elements and lately men activities over time (and also why the don’t use Uredale or Yoredale, after the river, instead of Wensleydale, after the village). Then I head to Askrigg, my next stop, where I set my tent at the Askrigg Camping. Since it was the start of the season and there was some wind, the lady in charge offer me to stay within their farm (just across the street from the main camping site) between all the sheep, which almost attacked me once as they are protective of their offspring. With some time to spare, I booked a table for dinner at the White Rose Hotel and then walked to the Mill Gill Force, where I got surprised by rain and got all wet. To dry off and wait for dinner I had some beer at the King’s Arms Hotel, which had the fireplace on. I do not remember what I ordered for dinner, but I do remember that the local ales are really good and worth trying. This was the perfect end for a day that started with the doubts from the previous day and turned into happiness and satisfaction for finishing in one piece. I felt that from now on nothing can stop me from finishing my cycling trip.

A Jubilee And Regional Railways In Dentdale. by Neil Harvey 156 Via Flickr: 45596 "Bahamas" has just emerged from Blea Moor Tunnel on the 4th October 1992. The train was "The Silver Jubilee" from Keighley to Carlisle, which celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Bahamas Locomotive Society. Pity that the coaches weren't more in keeping but I suppose the train organizers had to put up with what they were given by BR, as it was then.
