*grumble grumble* I’m having a really hard time with the second stage of the Demise fight… any chance you have any tips?
I don't know if you still need any help anon, but that's definitely the hardest part of the fight... I played the Wii version too so I don't know if that's what you're playing, but I'll do my best? It's also been a hot minute since I did that fight XD
Your shield is your very best friend. If you don't have a solid shield, it's absolutely worth the money to get one (though tbh, I actually prefer the all-the-way upgraded version of the metal shield rather than the goddess shield or whatever it's called (or the hero's shield, but that one is rather hard to get lol)).
I think there's also a shield strengthening potion you can get?? But I usually go with the heart ones upgraded all the way. More worth it to me.
As for fighting... hm. When you're trying to catch a lightning strike, it's best to get as far away from Demise as you can, keep your distance and try to stay out of his range until you can catch a bolt. (If I'm remembering correctly, the sky lights up a certain way when there's going to be one you can catch). Then you can approach and hopefully get him, though I found I'd often have to sacrifice some hearts in order to strike.
Try to learn his moves; you can either avoid or shield bash a lot of them, though shield bashing doesn't always work. I also find running quick circles around him helps, and staying on the opposite side from his sword arm helps with getting a quick strike in. Another thing I've done is go around him in a circle one way, and then rapidly dart around to the other side and try to get in some strikes (again, note where he has his sword!).
Honestly you just have to be real quick in about everything you do. Strike fast, strike hard, be crafty, shield if you can, and use that lightning!
Like I said earlier, I haven't done this in a while, so I might be remembering a few details wrong. But hopefully this is at least a little helpful! Good luck anon!!!
#answers from the floor#anon#skyward sword#Demise in regular mode is awful#Demise in master mode is KILLER#it took me tons of tries to get him when I did master mode... it was probably the hardest video game fight I've ever done#I was sweating by the end of it and out of breath#those wii remote fights do a number on you#but I LOVEEEE how immersive it is swordfighting like that#which i know is an unpopular opinion but i don't care <3

Hey Hey! How would the skeletons be like if they were in the slave tale universe? Oh and can you include the mafia bois and the horror bois?? (Also how's your day goin?)
Sans -He becomes suicidally depressed. He fought so hard to get out of the underground only to be thrown into a worse hell. He is cold and distant with everyone and just tries to keep his head down.
Papyrus -He’s still trying to see the good in everyone but with each passing day it gets harder and harder. He was lucky enough to get a good master but even the good ones are horrible people at times and he will not escape unphased.
Red -He has to be muzzled. Legally. Apparently if you keep biting your owners and being aggressive towards them means you may be a danger and gets you muzzled. He doesn’t enjoy it and it does not help with his violent outburst. Unless he gets a kind owner who he can at least somewhat tolerate he will be dust.
Edge -It is just luck that he’s used to taking orders. He learnt pretty quickly that back talking isn’t going to get him anything but broken and bruised bones. He becomes a perfect little soldier. Holding his tongue and slowly dying on the inside.
Blue -Is totally broken. Luckily he’s used to hiding behind his childlike personality so he uses this as a survival mechanism. He becomes so nervous and jittery that he’s a quiet ball of anxiety just hoping things will get better.
Orange -Is very stubborn. He will find loopholes in every order given and because of that goes through owners due to ‘insubordination’. He has become bitter and distant, with his depression coming back full force.
Berry -He is in constant work mode which is stressful. He’s never allowed to be his authentic self but he’s used to pretending and taking orders to survive and he will continue to do so until he’s dusted or this hell ends.
Syrup -The only real downside for Syrup here is that the collars prevent him from causing harm to humans so he has to get a little creative with some of his dealings. He’s used to taking orders though. His personality is the thing that turns away most owners until he’s taken as a personal bodyguard.
Axe -Can not be taken as a slave. His mental issues prevent him from remembering recent events and he is violent and dangerous. He killed his first owners and has been locked up ever since. Perhaps one day he could be sold on the black market as a killer.
Crooks -Oddly unaffected. This isn’t any worse than what he had to endure underground. He’s just rolling with the punches at this point and doing what he can to continue to survive.
Roulette -To everyone else it seems as if he's not affected by this at all. He acts the same but is working behind the scenes with the resistances to get monsters out of the slave trade which he is taking very seriously.
Sniper - This world has broken him. He speaks in a monotone voice and shows no emotions as he carries out orders in a world he would rather not be apart of.
Colt - He is biding his time. He will bite his tongue, for the most part, and do his best to stay calm and collected so as to not draw attention to himself. Of course this means when things go wrong he’s not going to lend a hand to the humans who have imprisoned him and he will happily watch them burn.
Musket - He becomes the perfect picture of subservient. Taking orders to the extreme in order to satisfy those in charge. He finds that the better he performs the better he is treated so he will strive for excellence. Don’t mistake this for loyalty however, he is more than happy when humans meet their demise and will not lift a finger to help his old masters.
Carbine -Is much more irritable. He often grinds his teeth together and seems to have a constant glare. He will do what is needed to survive but he makes it perfectly clear that he hates everything that is happening.
Rifle - Due to his clumsy nature, and the fact that he keeps messing with it in secret, Rifle's collar is often on the fritz. Sometimes this works out for the better and sometimes it can be so much worse. He has become more jumpy and cold during this whole ideal.

Happy Wednesday! Your questions are...
🔪 - Genre swap! Your characters are in a horror movie! How does it go? Who dies first, and who (or what) is the killer?
👬 - Body swap! Two of the characters in your WIP have switched bodies. How do they react? Do they get up to any sort of mischief with their newfound form, or are they just miserable?
HI, so sorry it's taken so long to get around to answering these for you. Going to place the answers under a cut to save peoples' dashes
🔪 - Genre swap! Your characters are in a horror movie! How does it go? Who dies first, and who (or what) is the killer?
I'll keep this answer to the "main cast" because that's what I tend to do for these kinds of questions.
Since all four characters are basically your standard goody two-shoes types, we'll go with someone else being the killer. If they're in a slasher movie, then the priestly powers of three of them won't necessarily save them (because in any other kind of horror movie those are basically cheat!mode). I've also watched enough slasher films to know exactly how the logic works ;).
The first to die will likely be Selene. The girl is super smart, but she is incredibly lacking in the common sense department and is exactly the type to go investigate weird and wonderful noises because she is just like that. She's also not very strong physically and can and will be easily overpowered if she's stuck in a corner.
The rest will manage to outrun and outsmart the killer for most of the rest of the movie, but it's likely that Edwin will be the next to go because, while he's against killing as a principal generally, he will be totally wanting to annihilate the killer for getting Selene. Sadly slasher movie logic dictates that this will end with his demise.
The last one to go will be Yoruk, who will inevitably sacrifice himself to allow Merri to kill the killer in turn. Why do these two survive so long? Easy. Both of them have a lot of actual combat experience and have sparred alongside each other for most of their lives and work extremely well together. Yoruk is also exactly the type of person who is willing to get themselves killed to let his partner have an opening to strike at.
👬 - Body swap! Two of the characters in your WIP have switched bodies. How do they react? Do they get up to any sort of mischief with their newfound form, or are they just miserable?
Oh, for a body swap I'm definitely going with Adrian and Thazaar! This is just for the lolz because Thazaar is going to hate it.
For context, Adrian is a reformed necromancer, who is now using his powers to help the people of Toreguarde after defecting from the Bad!Guy Wizard group who created the portal to the Pit that sits under the wizard's tower in the first place. Thazaar is Selene's second in command and is basically an Aasimar (with a Firre heritage), who despises necromancy in all its forms.
Thazaar reacts... poorly to the swap; demanding that the tower's staff do everything in their power to reverse things immediately. The feeling of necromancy magic makes him itch, so being in a body that is suffused with that power is actually traumatising. He'll do everything he can to refrain from casting anything, and will likely spend the whole duration of the swap pestering Selene and Dwena about reversing it and refusing to converse with Adrian's various assistants, who are very confused and upset about their master's sudden change in personality.
Adrian is a much more laid-back fellow, so while celestial magic, likewise, makes him itch in his normal body, the swap isn't quite so psychologically breaking for him. In fact; he sees it as an opportunity to learn more about how Celestial magic works since it's basically a fusion of divine and arcane magic in one place. He'll likely spend his time testing out spells and figuring out the mechanics so he can use them when he gets back to his own body again. He'll probably spend a few hours talking to Thazaar and trying to get his fellow wizard to calm down and realise that he's got an opportunity to gain a brand new perspective, which falls entirely on deaf ears.

𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐦 :: FFVII verse
Cindy Sophia Aurum is the only child of Marcus and Cynthia Aurum, both highly skilled engineers in their respective fields of Advanced Weaponry ( Cynthia ) and Urban Development ( Marcus ). She lived a relatively normal and happy life living in the residential area of Plate 7 until a tragic accident takes her parents’ life when she was just six years old. After a rather uncharacteristic monetary consolation gift from Shinra after losing two of its more accomplished employees, Cindy later lives with her uncle ( Cynthia's older brother ) Bernard and while it was a little rough going, she finds a fair bit of optimism and a reason to smile again.
Growing up she discovered a love for tinkering and managed to excel in her schooling, mastering electrical engineering and mechanics at a relatively young age. After school, she decided to work for Shinra despite her family’s warnings or apprehensions and, to their further surprise, established her talents in both Urban Development and Weaponry departments.
Naturally, this pulls her a little thin at the edges and given the somewhat ‘eat or be eaten’ mentality within the company, those edges begin to sharpen to a more icy, realistic exterior when rising through the ranks. She’s taken to curb her ‘country hospitality’ demeanor, dropping the drawl in her accent and going by Sophia more often than not and it’s safe to say friends are few and far between seeing as she feels she has little time for it.
Yet in the back of her mind, something feels off, knowing this was the last place her parents were before their deaths. Curiosity springs doubts which cause her to question if their demise was merely by chance or by foul play.
extra tidbits taken from previous aesthetic/brainstorming posts…
Cindy, being the smarty pants that she is, is 15 when she goes to pursue her higher education, 20 after graduating, and 21 when she begins working at Shinra. She’s around 26 when the events of FFVII begin.
Usually wears what could best be described as a bridal ( yes I am taking the ‘married to the job' aesthetic for cereal ) power suit. White slacks, white, long-sleeved blazer which, if working with her hands on something, can be removed to reveal either ( depending on the mood ) a white or black haltered corseted top. Also the only time one could see the cluster of sunflowers tattooed on her right shoulder or the set of gears running down her spine. Hair is curly reaching roughly waist length but is almost always kept in a braided bun.
When she starts working with Avalanche, however, it shifts dramatically to high-waisted jean shorts and biker boots with a brown leather, leg-holstered utility belt. She still wears the corset tops but mostly has one of her dad’s old flannels over it, unbuttoned and tied around her waist. This time her hair is more playfully messy either in a bun or ponytail.
She is very dedicated to her work and given the nature of her work environment, has taken a more gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss attitude while on the job.
Is very reserved and a little bit cold however when comfortable enough she does show a bit more of a casual side; a touch more sarcastic and maybe even gives a bit of a smile if the situation calls for it.
Paints, cooks, and dances in her free time.... whenever she decides to give herself free time >_>
Only has a hint of a country accent and owns an exotic cat named Lexus that sometimes hangs out in her office.
Her main mode of transportation is a motorcycle called Killer Bee. It is a completely customized mix between a chopper ( in regards to size ) and a sport ( in regards to design ) bike. The base of the body is matte black with a shiny, pearlescent yellow streak that starts from the top before splitting into two stripes along the sides. It is very loud, it is very fast, and it is her pride and joy
#( verses )#⚙ ; 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 :: I can’t drown my demons they know how to swim ( FFVII )#I FINALLY made the thing!!#pspspspspps come plot things with me uwu

No. Hold on. Listen.
Their physical appearance and bodies just complement each other in such beautiful ways. Now this may be my brainrot talking, but…
The cold pale walking corpse of an elf, past self dead in the dirt for centuries that’s fighting to reclaim his life against the hot fiery red tiefling with a passion for life fighting her death.
And their scars! Both literal and internal!
Astarion, with this perfect body, offset with this terrible scar on his back that is representative of his captivity and enslavement to Cazador. Puts on a mask that hides the more unsavory parts of his personality and history. Yet he’s more open about telling you bits and pieces of his past as you grow closer. Afraid inside and always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Then there’s Karlach who looks like she wears her scars loud and proud. A heart on her sleeve type person. Wants to live in the moment. Yet refrains from talking about what happen to her in Avernus. She rather not bring it up and changes the subject when you try to get to know that part of her life because it’s a mood killer. Though from some of the out-of-pocket comments she makes it clearly wasn’t great. (I mean she was stuck in Hell I’m sure it was nothing but awful) Distracting herself with the positive and not facing how much pain and fear she has building inside herself.
Both had their bodies violated for some else’s deal with a devil: Astarion’s being forced to sleep with people to bring back to Cazador for his eventual deal with Mephistopheles and Karlach having her heart ripped out and her body modified to put infernal machinery in its place for Gortash and Zariel’s deal.
Both had unwanted transformations: Astarion’s vampirism and Karlach’s weaponization.
BOTH BRANDED IN INFERNAL!! HELLO?!: Astarion’s piece of Cazador's contract on his back and Karlach’s tattoos on her body and even etched into her horns that basically say she’s Zariel’s favorite lapdog.
Having those two bodies come together togive instead of take. To give a genuine warm loving touch for once in years’ time instead of death and violence. Able to touch someone, to reach out in emotional or physical intimacy without it leading to that person’s demise. Clumsily trying to figure out what it means to slow down, to be out of survival mode and in the moment appreciating life and making their own choices with each other. They’re just two normal people again finding their own sense of freedom and who they are even with the sins of their past, instead of the monsters built by their masters.
So, these two characters specifically, seeking such things in each other?! Their relationship is just so…poetic? Oh, I’ll never be normal again. Their relationship is going to drive me insane.
There’s more but I feel like I’m rambling sorry, this post just activated my brainrot
Cause I think about these little things between them SO much!
I am obsessed with the visual contrast (and inherent significance) of Astarion and Karlach’s skin. Pearly smooth and pale, dusky red and covered in scar tissue.
It’s such a drastically different representation of their captivity, torture and pain, but so rich in meaning…
I imagine Astarion tracing fingertips over her rough skin as she sleeps beside him. Softly touching her deep scars and burns, finding the few spots left of her that are unblemished, seeing how scars over scars hardened her flesh and thinking… of her pain, and his.
AGH!
#bg3#karlach#astarion#thoughts#Also *cough**cough* causally saves your image*cough**cough* I’ll just save this for uh…reference purposes. Thank you

smite clash guide
Destroy is a rivalry game with areas of strength for a part. You want to get familiar with the essential elements of the game well to get along and not experience the anger of different players. Look at this manual for get more familiar with the mechanics of Destroy .
smite clash guide
Track down a most loved god You should pick a divine being that you like the interactivity to prepare your abilities. Since toward the starting you will have a long way to go in the game, essentially you don't need to stress over mastering a few unique abilities and styles of play. Look at the changed classes: Professional killers: They are generally divine beings that assault skirmish and utilize their actual power in their essential assaults and heavenly capacities. They are extremely dexterous and cause a ton of harm, yet they can be somewhat powerless. Gatekeepers: these are the game's tanks, they utilize their physical and mystical ability to control the fight. Heroes: this class is a blend among Professional killers and Watchmen. They are scuffle warriors who can endure some harm and furthermore cause a moderate measure of harm. Mages: Generally these divine beings assault from a good ways, utilizing sorcery ability to build their base assault strength and capacities. In any case, they are very delicate whenever gotten. Look at the five best Divine beings for amateurs! Find the various capabilities In all MOBA games, there are five essential capabilities that you can take in the group: Mid Path, Solo Path, Jungler, Convey and Support. No matter what the class of their god, every player has one of these capabilities during the game. Mid Path: ordinarily has serious areas of strength for an equipped for causing a huge measure of harm. You need to press your direction and safeguard it, going after the adversary tower whenever the situation allows. This is the best job for Mages , as region harm spells are particularly valuable for the job. Solo Path: This capability is for players who like to be more individualistic, yet additionally prefer to help the group when required. Since you are distant from everyone else on a way, it is important to pick your fights with wariness or when it is smarter to sit tight for your group's jungler to help you. For this job, you need a strong god, with a ton of life and opposition, similar to a Champion . Convey: this is a vital situation in the group. You will cause the most passings and, to arrive at your greatest power, you want to reinforce yourself with the assistance of your partners. The objective is to remain sufficiently able to lead the group to triumph in the last phase of the game. The best divine beings to begin exploring different avenues regarding this capability are the Trackers . Support: in this job you will help your group by and large, however the main thing is to assist your convey with the passings he really wants to become more grounded. A decent god to begin with in this job is Ymir , as he has extraordinary protection and great group control to help his group during bunch fights. Jungler: this is the most troublesome capability of the game, since you will get your demises and your XP in the wilderness and not on the ways. Moreover, you likewise need to help the ways being squeezed. This isn't the ideal situation for those simply beginning, as you really want a few information on the game's mechanics and the way that the divine beings work. The best junglers are, in actuality, the Professional killers . There are a few Modes in the game Prior to wandering into the game, you ought to understand what modes there are and what they comprise of. Accomplishment: this is the conventional way. It comprises of two groups of five players on a guide with three ways and a wilderness between them. Each group should attempt to pressure the other, wiping out followers and pinnacles until they can kill the rival's Titan. Fair: this is a manner by which you play one on one or three against three, with only one way and a wilderness. These fights are really great for you to become familiar with the fundamentals of the game and the mechanics of every god. Attack: here you just have one way, there is no wilderness and you have a place with one of the two groups with five players. Be that as it may, you don't pick your god, yet you are relegated an irregular one. Field: this is the mode with the most activity. There are no ways, no pinnacles, no wilderness, simply an enormous open field with an entry at each end. The objective is to guarantee that your followers arrive at the foe's entryway and keep restricting cronies from arriving at yours. Attack: a fight on two ways, where two groups with four divine beings attempt to obliterate the designs of every one, attempting to arrive at the foe Titan with the assistance of an Attack Juggernaut. Groups acquire focuses by clearing fields in the wilderness and killing foe divine beings and flunkies. Whenever a group arrives at 100 places, its Attack Juggernaut seems to aid the fight. Speak with your group One of the conceivable outcomes of this kind of helpful games is correspondence between players. So assuming you see a contradicting god move, assuming you see one secret in the wilderness or on the other hand assuming that you notice anything more significant, you ought to impart that data to the remainder of the group. Do this and keep your partners from being pointlessly ganked. Trust that your partners will assault Quite possibly of the most exceedingly terrible thing you can do in a helpful game is to go out all alone. Destroy is made to function collectively , so it is futile to need to be the legend and attempt to arrive at the shrubs of triumph alone. Winding up demolishing your group's whole technique, taking care of your adversaries with simple kills is the best bet. Be a savvy purchaser At your base, you can purchase things with the gold you procure during the fight. These things are fundamental as they increment your power and qualities . The majority of them are separated into three classes, the first being the least expensive and, subsequently, the most fragile. Which things to purchase and in what request will rely upon the god you are playing and your job inside the group. The significance of Wards These things safeguard you by permitting you to see foe players around you. This is a fundamental capability to stay away from ganks and different kinds of ambushes. Furthermore, you can annihilate your foes' ward to attempt to overwhelm them. Simply remember that divine beings with intangibility capacities are not recognized by wards , so never let your gatekeeper down. Stay away from the harm done by the Pinnacles Towers are fundamental in MOBA games. They can either assist your group with safeguarding a way, or they can keep you from giving the last disaster for a rival, making you lose demise. The pinnacles are caused basically to go after disturbances of cronies , yet assuming you head off to war with divine beings close to the pinnacles, the emphasis is on you. Consequently, it is smart to keep away from the gamble of doing as such, except if you are certain that you will kill even your foe. This archive has been altered with the moment web content author. Six weeks later…
Ever since his Chicago rally, Vanzant had been getting worse. His messages to the people were becoming more hateful and violent towards the Killer Queens, calling for their demise as soon as possible. Your group mostly just shrugged these threats off; bold words for a man who had no idea where you were. But he was still determined to see you dead.
The threats only started to terrify you after you missed your period.
You nervously paced the floor of your room. Ben was still soundly asleep, but you were too on-edge. Your period was almost a week late, which never happened for you. One or two days, sure, but never almost seven.
There were no more doctors around, which meant your only hope of confirming or denying your theory was if you found a pregnancy test somewhere in the hospital. Maybe the pharmacy had some.
Lost in thought, you accidentally walked right into a table, knocking some things onto the floor. The noise caused Ben to wake up, groaning and rubbing his eyes. “Babe, what’s wrong? You okay?”
“Yeah…” you said slowly, still lost in thought as you began to pick up what fell.
“You look worried, what happened?” he asked. You mentally cursed his abilities to see right through you.
“Nothing.” You sat down on the mattress, petting Frankie on the head. “Nothing’s wrong.” You slowly lay back down, letting Frankie set her head down on your stomach.
“All right, if you insist.” Ben leaned over to attempt to kiss you, but Frankie quickly jumped up, growling and barking at him. “Whoa, hey!” He scooted away. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Frankie, stop,” you scolded, making her move down to your feet. “That’s weird,” you said. “She never does that.”
“And she can’t pretend like nothing’s wrong,” Ben commented. You rolled your eyes, turning onto your side to face away from him. “Okay, okay, I’ll stop prying.”
“Thank you.”
---
Later that night, after everyone had fallen asleep, you snuck out of your room and went downstairs to the pharmacy. Using an old flashlight, you rummaged around the random medications and things they had in the back. You were starting to think you wouldn’t find one until you saw a small box poking out of a disregarded bin in the back of the room. You grabbed it and sighed in relief. A pregnancy test.
You slowly closed the door to the bathroom, desperately trying to avoid waking up Ben. You took the test out of the box, reading the instructions. You followed them exactly; this was your only chance to get an accurate answer.
The test rested on the sink while you sat on the floor, leaning on the door. It had been long enough, the test should be able to give you your answer. But you were too scared to look at it. You didn’t know which result you were more terrified to see.
Slowly, you moved onto your knees so you could peek over the sink to see the result. You reached for the test, taking it in your shaky hand. You took a deep breath before looking at it.
Pregnant. The word was there, plain and clear. You were pregnant with Ben’s child.
You chucked the test into the toilet, watching it sink to the bottom of the bowl. You wrapped your arms around your stomach, backing into the wall as your body convulsed with sobs. This wasn’t what you wanted. This isn’t what either of you wanted. This wasn’t supposed to happen.
You heard a knock on the door. “(Y/n)? Babe, are you in there? What’s the matter?”
You flung the door open, wrapping your arms around him as tightly as you could. He hugged you back, whispering softly to you. “It’s okay, you’re fine. Did you have a nightmare? You’ll be okay, it’s only a dream.”
“It’s not a dream!” you exclaimed. “This is real! This can’t be happening!”
“Let’s just go back to bed. You’ll feel better in the morning.” He tried to guide you back to the mattress before you broke away from him.
“No,” you stated, turning towards the toilet. You kneeled down, reaching into the bowl to get the test back out.
“Okay, what the hell are you doing?!” Ben exclaimed. “Please get your arm out of the toilet!”
You yanked the test out of the toilet, letting it drip a little bit before holding out towards your boyfriend, refusing to look at him.
He slowly took the test from your hand. You heard him gasp before he was silent for several long seconds. “Holy shit,” he murmured. “Is...is this real? (Y/n), don’t be fucking with me.”
“I wish it were fake.” You stood up, still looking down at your feet.
“Why?” Ben asked excitedly. “You’re pregnant! We’re going to be parents!”
You finally looked up at his face, confused. “What?”
“This is great!” he exclaimed. “I’m gonna be a dad! You’re gonna be the best mom ever! Us, parents!”
“Ben, no,” you said sternly. “That’s the problem. We’ve talked about this. Who wants to raise a kid in a country like this?”
“We can make it work.” He put a hand on your cheek, pulling your face into his for a kiss. He dropped the test onto the floor, putting his other hand on your waist. You wrapped your arms around his neck, angling your head to the side slightly.
You pulled away first, putting your hands on his chest. “Let’s go to sleep,” you suggested. “We can...figure everything out in the morning.”
Ben agreed, walking over to the mattress. You were about to lay down next to him when you stopped. You sighed, hanging your head in annoyance. “I have to pee.”
---
The next morning was one of the rare times that Ben woke up before you. You awoke to find him staring at you lovingly. “You need something?” you asked, giggling.
“No, you’re just sexy when you’re pregnant,” he said, running a hand down your arm.
“I don’t even look pregnant,” you pointed out.
“Still.” He pulled you into his body, kissing you fiercely. You wove your fingers into his hair, deepening it.
Everything was fine until he decided to squeeze your boob. “Ow!” you yelped, grabbing his wrist and shoving his hand away.
Ben sat back at your outburst. “What did I do?” he asked frantically.
You put a hand over your still-aching breast. “Shit, that hurt like hell.” You pointed a finger at him. “Okay. No more touching my boobs while I’m pregnant.”
“All right, fine,” Ben agreed, looking a little disappointed. He seemed lost in thought for a few seconds before saying, “We should tell the others.”
“Oh hell no,” you asserted. “They don’t need that stress. We have to keep this to ourselves for now.”
“Eventually, we’re going to have trouble hiding it,” he reasoned.
“I’ll just have to borrow your baggy clothes then,” you countered.
He paused again. “Yeah, I’m okay with that.”
You laughed. “Thanks Ben.” You moved so you sat next to him, leaning a head on his shoulder. “You’re amazing.”
“All because of you, love.” He planted a kiss on the top of your head, putting his hand on your belly. “I bet it’s a girl.”
“Really?” you asked. “I was thinking boy.”
“Hmmm...no. It’s a girl.” He nodded his head, affirming his thoughts.
“You’re weird,” you said, laughing.
“Here, we’ll test it.” He leaned down a little so his mouth was closer to your stomach. “Hi, tiny person. How you doing down there? So, I was just wondering if you were a girl? Because I think you’re a girl.”
You rolled your eyes until your stomach rumbled. Ben let out a shout. “Ha! I told you!”
“I’m hungry, Ben. The baby’s probably smaller than a pea, they’re not even going to be making any movement yet.”
Ben huffed. “Fine. I can wait nine months to prove you wrong.”
You shook your head, standing up. “Okay, sure Ben. Let’s just go to breakfast.” You were about to grab some clothes when a wave of nausea came over you. You leaned against a table, hoping you didn’t actually throw up.
“What’s wrong now?” Ben had seemed to go into super protective mode. “Is the baby okay? Are you okay?” He stood in front of you.
At that moment, your stomach decided to empty itself all over Ben’s front side.
He stepped back, holding his arms up. You had doubled over, wiping your mouth with the back of your hand. You looked up, seeing your boyfriend covered in vomit. You covered your mouth, stifling a sob. “Oh, my God, I’m so sorry.” Tears fell down your cheeks, concerning Ben even more.
“Shit, is this normal? Oh, my God, you’re dying.” He put his hands on the sides of his head, already freaking out. “We just find out she’s pregnant and now she’s dying.”
“I’m not dying,” you sobbed. “This is normal.”
“Then why are you crying?!” he exclaimed.
“I don’t know!” you answered, crying harder. “Hormones?”
Ben seemed to be calming down. “Okay, well, as long as you’re not dying, I’m going to go shower.”
“But I feel bad about throwing up on you!” you exclaimed.
“What?” he asked. “No, (Y/n), it’s fine. If that’s a normal pregnancy thing, we’ll just deal with it. No big deal.”
You sniffled, wiping the tears away. “Really?”
“Yes, really. I signed up for this the same time you did.” He tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. “But I really do want to go shower, so I’ll meet you at breakfast.”
You gave him a small smile. “Okay. I love you, Ben.”
“I love you too. Both of you.” He touched your stomach quickly before heading to the bathroom.
---
“All right, so Lucy and (Y/n) don’t feel well, so we need someone else to be in this video with Ben.” Gwilym looked around. “Any volunteers?”
“Uhh, you?” Rami suggested.
“If you volunteer someone else, it means you actually want to go,” Joe said, shrugging.
“That’s something made up by teachers to get someone to present in class,” Rami said, rolling his eyes. “My brother would agree with me. Because he’s a teacher.”
“Rami, will you please just do it?” Gwilym asked. “We’re running out of time to be able to get this through easily.”
Rami sighed. “Okay, I’ll do it. But just this once.”
“Thank you. Now stand next to Ben and try to look serious.”
Standing next to Ben, Rami stuck his tongue out, just to annoy Gwilym.
---
“I know most of you won’t recognize me, because I’m not usually in front of the camera.” Cornelius Vanzant flexed his fist as we watched this new man talk. “I’m the one who usually hacks the airways to be able to get these messages to you.”
“So he’s the source of our problems,” Vanzant growled.
He and his men listened to the rest of the broadcast, telling where Vanzant would be in the next week and telling people to rally against him, the same garbage he was used to hearing.
“We need to find them,” Vanzant said for what must have been the billionth time that day.
“Sir, we know,” one of his men said. “But there is little we can do--”
“Wait!” another man exclaimed. “Start the recording over.” The man at the controls rewound the video to the start. “Do you see the mural on the wall, sir?”
“Yes, what about it?” Vanzant demanded.
“That same mural is on a wall in the radiology wing of a hospital I stayed at while receiving treatment for cancer several years ago,” the man explained.
“That painting could be a million different places, how does that narrow our search down any?”
“The hospital commissioned my wife to paint it during my stay,” he explained. “That’s the only place it could be.”
Vanzant smiled wickedly. “Excellent.” He turned to his assistant, who was always silently next to him. “Get my plane ready. We’re headed to LA.” The assistant nodded before quickly scurrying off. “Do we know the name of this hacker man?”
“He was an actor,” one of the men said. “Rami Malek. Very talented.”
“Rami Malek,” Vanzant repeated, as if tasting the name in his mouth. “Well, Mr. Malek, your days are numbered.” He promptly stood up, stalking out of the room.

Winter Play 2020 Impressions
Hands-on with Indies at Winter Play NYC
It’s not always about the big shows. One of the (often overlooked) pleasures to be found in gaming (when the world is not in quarantine) are the local events featuring indie developers and their creations. While many of these are geared towards the developer community, others, such as Playcrafting’s Winter Play NYC Game Expo, are open to the public and offer the opportunity for players of all ages to get hands-on with video, card and tabletop games from a variety of individuals and teams.
The event, which was held at the Microsoft Technology Center in Times Square early last month, gave me a chance to preview games ranging from Switch-bound multiplayer titles to ones that began as projects from this year’s Global Game Jam and everything in between. And while I didn’t have time to play every game appearing at the expo, I did want to share some impressions of the titles that may be of interest to the Nintendo player- and a few more that further convey the nature of the event.
Kung-Fu Kickball
Blowfish Studios
youtube
Everybody was Kung-Fu fightin’! One of the first Switch games I had the chance to try out at Winter Play throws- er, uh, kicks a mash-up of kickball, basketball & Kung-Fu archetypes through the lens of local multiplayer frenzy reminiscent of Smash Bros & Killer Queen Black. In fact, the game’s primary developer, Jonah, mentioned that he was approached by a company to make a physical arcade machine- and that cabinet now stands next to one for Killer Queen Black.
I had a chance to enjoy a couple of rounds- but, then, who wouldn’t have fun playing as an old master kickin’ people around inside a volcano?
Teams of two players face off on large stages attempting to kick the ball up into the opponent’s goal net, using their kung-fury to slow down other players, steal the ball or block shots. A clever teleport dash mechanic, once mastered, helps rapidly navigate back and forth across the court and get ahead of the ball.
Characters have a bit of a floaty feel to them, but in a good way. It helps keep the action frantic and moving while also allowing players to misjudge the angle of a sudden redirection. Those openings can lead to break away moments from the kung-fu hustle and bustle.
It admittedly took me a round to really grasp the controls, through no fault of the game itself. Once I got the hang of the teleport dash and how to kick the ball up into the goal basket, I was quickly kicking the ball free of my opponents and teleporting past them to catch up to it and bring it into the goal area. My efforts were often foiled by static, pinball-like platform placements but I, nonetheless, had a blast leading to my losing-er, uh, unvictorious streak and I’m confident a few more rounds would lead to overcoming those challenges.
Following my less-than-impressive kung-fu career debut, the next group after me was a family with both adults and young children and all four had a good time with energetic enthusiasm during their matches, which bodes well for this title’s family gaming prospects.
After three years of development by primarily one person (with the art and audio contracted out), Kung-Fu Kickball should be hitting the Switch sometime this year.
Swim Sanity
Decoy Games
youtube
One of the last titles I had the opportunity to try out at the event also gave me some Killer Queen Black multiplayer vibes at first glance, but this underwater competitive adventure/shooter hybrid quickly drowned those comparisons.
Up to four players navigate a side-scrolling arena or stage, shooting down various creatures of the sea with primary and secondary weapons while charging a Smash-like meter that can unleash different special “swimsanity” abilities selected prior to the start of the stage. These swimsanities range from transforming into a shark that can dash attack horizontally across the screen to a piranha that lets you go Pac-Man on hostile soon-to-be-sushi. The different abilities help customize team configurations for co-op play and add variety to competitive rounds.
I first played a horde mode that reminded me a little of an underwater (non-Super) Mario Bros. stage, with various waves of critters emerging onto the level. It made for good targeting practice and a chance to acclimate to the controls.
After that, I swam next door to a second room where the developers had the adventure mode set up and it was here that you really started to realize that the game was meatier than just another single-screen, multiplayer versus game. We played a couple of levels- both featuring our team of four fleeing from a giant threat pursuing us from the left of the screen as we swam through levels, collecting weapons and treasure. The first was a giant killer whale, while the second was a sort of crab tank. Turns out, that apparent safe spot above the chest laser cannon by the crab’s eyes? Not so safe when the crab tank also has laser eyes.
The title’s journey began over a decade ago as a student project inspired by the Game and Watch Gallery game Octopus. Now, after many iterations over the years, it is anticipating a Switch release in 2020.
Slapdash
Tarraske Digital
youtube
Combining the rapid, angular redirects of Pinball and obstructed goals of Nok Hockey with the team play of an arcade soccer game (and then throwing cats in for good measure), Slapdash is another promising local co-op title that I’m now looking forward to getting my mittens on.
It made me recall the feel of some of the multiplayer party/mini games found in the Super Monkey Ball series, such as Monkey Fight or Monkey Billiards, with ball-shaped cat players ricocheting a ball (and themselves) back and forth across the playing field trying to score points behind the opponent’s goal wall.
While still in the process of refining its visuals (the white face patterns of the different cats currently all tend to blend together, making it very easy to lose track of which player is yours), the gameplay itself is simple, addictive and fun.
Slapdash is aiming for an eventual release on consoles, but no platforms have been officially announced yet.
Antipole DX
Saturnine Games
youtube
Mega Man-inspired gameplay with an added gravity reversal mechanic? That’s something firmly in my wheelhouse. This remake of the original DSi game features new graphics, sound, music & levels with refinements to the overall gameplay.
The juggling of both your character and enemies with the gravity mechanic is implemented in some tight platforming puzzles and obstacles. The action will definitely scratch an itch for players eager for a game in this genre beyond the Mega Man and Gunvolt series.
While originally announced for 2016 on the Wii U and 3DS (and even included among the 2016 Nindies Summer Jam highlight reel), those versions were never released, despite the game being made with the 3DS in mind. And though a Switch port has become unlikely at this point, players who have been following the game’s development over the past few years can look forward to finally playing it on Steam, PS4 and Xbox One in 2020.
Lo-Fi Samurai
Pure-238
One of the more unique titles I played was this stylish game that combined rhythmic combat with real-time platforming. You move freely but can only dash or attack enemies to the rhythm beat pattern tracking across the top of the screen. All set against gorgeous retro visuals that are at least partially inspired by Samurai Jack.
I played one of the levels and watched other people play a couple more. It turned out that I am, apparently, really terrible at rhythm games- and it was definitely at no fault to the game’s controls. I found myself trying to overcompensate for missed timings or attempting to spam an attack out of platformer habit, only to extend my cooldown punishment and leading to my inevitable demise. The developer recommended everyone playing play the game with headphones on as the actual music beat helps the player focus on, and attune to, that facet of the game play. I guess I just needed to attune longer.
Despite this newly discovered rhythmic deficiency in my gaming abilities, I found the combination of genres and mechanics really interesting and the overall project to have a lot of promise. It may not have any platform releases scheduled yet, but I think players will want to keep their eye open for it in the event that it achieves one.
Repear
Fruits & Veggies Games
A Global Game Jam project from this year providing a cute, simple 2D, split-screen, co-op platformer experience. Players must try to reach one another through a series of puzzles solved through triggers on the other player’s screen. By working together they can achieve that goal.
Though intended for 2 players, I actually got a chance to play it by myself, controlling both characters. As I’m a sucker for dual-screen-type experiences, the added level of challenge involved actually enhanced the experience considerably. The game also has some really beautiful music by Axel Kazis-Taylor that might take you off guard. It goes a long way to show the level of talent and creativity that can emerge for even relatively simple projects mostly made over a single weekend (and less than a month of polish).
Chromavaders
Corundum Games
youtube
A fun, retro-NES-styled match-3 puzzle game combined with a Space Invaders-style enemy advancement. It may seem pretty straight forward but the block catching/building mechanic provides some interesting variety to strategies you can employ to play it.
You can play it for yourself on the game’s website.
Hidden Tunes
Rafael Rodriguez
Navigate across all the spaces of an isometric world by queueing up your movements. The paths you take produce tones. Eventually, you can discover the melody needed to progress. A solid foundation for a musical puzzle game that I could see having a place on platforms like the Switch. No word on a release for this project, yet.
Radarjam
Hamra Digital
youtube
A game in the spirit of Asteroids, but one where the enemies and incoming fire are only seen periodically. I found myself pulling off a lot of aerial drifting and circle-strafing attack patterns, which ended up being pretty fun and helped distinguish the feel of the game from its more familiar progenitor.
Run & Gun
MHarris Games
The Tron-like aesthetic used by this multiplayer, arena shooter lends it an instant visual appeal. A wall run mechanic helps add some variety that you might not anticipate with a retro-styled shooter like this. Has potential as a fun testbed as the project evolves. Downloadable from the game’s website, where you can also follow its development as future builds are released.
PathFinder Pro
Peter Trivelli
This physics-based puzzle game has you navigating a ball towards contact with a goal by laying down a path piece of piece. Simple in premise but deceptively challenging. The gameplay could easily become addictive.
Available now via iOS Test Flight
In Before the Lockdown
While the current health crisis will probably keep Winter Play as one of the last local expo events for some time, they’re definitely worth looking into once we emerge from our lockdowns and social distancing and the world begins to return to normal. In the meantime, we can hopefully look forward to more hands-on time with some of these titles as they release on Switch and other platforms.

part 46
The time bomb is ticking now. But without knowing how long the countdown is, what do you do with all that time?
Sitting quietly, Novastrike observed Scorponok and Blackout as they passed each other glances while running maintenance checks on the photon blasters. The duo seemed so perfectly in sync with each other. It brought a smile to her face to watch them interact. Earlier they’d been demonstrating some simple brawling techniques to a troop of bots on the ship. Nova had involved herself when requested only; allowing the twosome to show how to better coordinate attacks with and against smaller Cybertronians.
There was something extraordinary in how the pair interacted. They didn’t always get along and agree on things, that much was obvious. But it made her wonder just how long they’d been able to work with each other to have a comfortable system and a basis of healthy respect.
It made her wonder if she’d ever be able to get on that sort of level with Blackout. The very idea made her fidget slightly.
She longed way too much for an imaginary possibility. But hope was what she lived on, breathed for. It had gotten her this far to hope. Her faith in the tall and brawny obsidian mech standing in the room seemed to have lead her somewhere new and interesting; a path of unexpected turns and drops.
Blackout turned in her direction, and she looked up expectancy. The glowing flame from his crimson optics seemed to brew a look of amusement as he watched her posture change. A quirk in the corner of his mouth showed the barest hints at a smile he tried to obscure.
Primus must have been in one fragging good mood when he crafted such a handsome bot. Jet-black armor that mirrored such little light, a pondering hardened gaze, and a touch of silver and dull charcoals. Not only was he built to withstand practically anything thrown at him with his impervious armor, but for a mech with the toughest exterior and strong build, he had the most cordial expression when he actually loosened up (though, she was sure no one saw it enough to agree with her on the matter).
“Nova, would you mind retrieving for me a few parts from cargo? I can send you a list. I’d have Scorponok do it, but it would take him longer to get there and back, and as someone who worked on categorizing items, I’m sure you know where most everything is and can scale anything to get what may have been shelved up high.”
Jumping to her pedes, Novastrike placed her servo against her chassis and gave a playful bow. “I can certainly do that, your handsomeness~”
Blackout drew his optic ridges down as his mouth formed a slight frown. “What vular language,” he snorted. “Handsomeness, I think your ghastliness or horribleness would be more accurate.”
Nova shrugged. “You have your terribly inaccurate terms, and I have my more honest ones.”
“We’ll see who’s more exact,” Blackout challenged, raising his helm up slightly with narrowed optics.
“Flirt later,” Scorponok cut in with irritation. “Parts now. Please.”
Offering a shy giggle at the scorpion’s words, Novastrike gave a slight ‘what can you do’ gesture in Blackout’s direction as she walked backwards. He seemed just as embarrassed, placing a servo on his hip (Primus she would certainly love to put her servos all over those hips) and glancing between her and his partner with ignominy.
“I’ll be right back,” Nova stated, walking right into the walk beside the door. A humiliated squeak escaped her and her audios blushed as she tripped over her pedes to slide over to the door.
Way to go, dumbaft. Keep your optics ahead of you instead of walking backwards and staring at your attractive boyfriend next time, why don’t you.
“Take your time,” Blackout offered, grinning at her expense.
Tiptoeing backwards out of the room, the door gave a quiet metallic whoosh as it shut before Nova, closing off her view of the colossal mech and his miniature sidekick.
She let out a loud breath. Walking in reverse right into a wall. Good one. Maybe next time she’d try cartwheeling off the freakin’ ship.
Slowly sliding her servos over her face, Novastrike dropped them down at her sides and transformed; shifting plates and panels of metal rearranging into her cyber-cat alt-mode. Twisting around mid-air as her tail gave a sharp whip to her left, Nova took off down the passageway for the freight area where supplies were kept.
The little femme’s pads were quiet upon the floor, leaving most she passed slightly startled to see her bounding by them. It felt good to stretch out her hunches; limbs extending in full with each gallop she pranced. Her optics darted around for any hazards as she went; zipping between pedes, under bots, against the wall to narrowly miss groups moving together through the hall.
There were a few mechs and a femme leaving the stock room as Nova approached. They gave slight inclinations of their helm in her direction as she weaved around them and pounced into the dark-lit room.
She instantly regretted taking on the task of fetching supplies for Blackout.
Neutroboost was by one of the large metal racks, looking over items with interest. She’d been trying to avoid the mech for days, unsure of how she was going to go about speaking to him about what she’d seen days ago.
Unhinging herself from the frozen statue she became, Novastrike licked her chops nervously and shifted back into bipedal. Her ears gave a nervous twitch as she shuffled into the room, trying to remain allusive while walking around to grab items.
Neutroboost glanced in her direction as she pulled her datapad from subspace to inspect the list Blackout had sent to her. She tried to remain on the opposite side of the room as much as possible, stacking supplies and subspacing other items until she had no other choice but to fetch things on his side of the room.
The steady gaze that had been digging into her frame seemed to intensify.
“Greetings, commander,” Nova said softly, keeping her optics on what she was reaching for.
“Femme,” the mech unpleasantly commented.
Startled by the hostile tone, Novastrike turned her optics up to the mech. He seemed none too pleased to be interacting with her. Not necessarily unusual, but a bit unnecessary considering...
“Feeling alright today, sir?”
“Adequate yes, why?”
There was a growl in his ‘why’ as he glowered at her.
Novastrike tore her optics away. His gaze left a lasting impression like pins and needles pricking at her frame. It wasn’t a pleasing sensation.
“Just looking out for you, commander,” she said gently, snatching one of the required pieces Blackout had asked for. “You know, maybe you could try talking about-”
“I’m not talking about anything with you,” the mech furiously spat. “Or anyone else on this fragging ship. I’m fine.”
Vexed now, the tiny femme turned her optics back up to the mech. A blazing, fierce light burned in the twin orbs.
“There’s nothing fine about overcharging yourself on stolen energon!” she hissed.
Neutroboost jutted out a threatening digit in her direction, peeling back his lip to reveal a furious snarl as he glared. “Mark my words, femme, if you tell anyone about what you saw I will eject you off this ship and into the nearest star.”
Flinching, Novastrike took a step back. Her mouth opened slightly, horrified.
“You need to get help,” she reasoned.
“I’ve got all the help I need.”
“Well you might think you’re fine, but I’m not fine keeping this filthy little lie for you,” Novastrike argued. “I can’t recharge, I can’t look Guard in the optics, I can’t even drink-”
“Can’t drink, you say?” Neutroboost interrupted with interest. “So you have some spare energon sitting around...”
“Is that all you care about? When’s the next chance you’ll have at throwing yourself into your room and getting drunk? You’re disgusting.”
“Not all of us are charming little whores, my dear.”
Energon rushed furiously through Nova’s veins. Her ears burned, giving off a dark hue of blue as she slammed her pede on the floor.
“How dare you insult me! Keeping my mouth shut, biting my glossia with my derma for you, you should be ashamed.”
“You brought a killer onto our ship!” Neutroboost roared, leaning over so his frame towered over the tiny femme and cast an ominous shadow over her. “What a great little savior you are Novastrike, bravo Novastrike, the mech saved our protoforms once and everyone loves him like he’s Primus himself. Well I know better; I see the sort of destruction his kind brings! I saw it on Crooked’s face when he was killed, and I’m going to have to witness it on every other mech and femme’s face on this ship when he turns on us, just because you couldn’t stop yourself from putting your filthy little servos all over him.”
Trembling slightly, Novastrike raised her voice; though the effort of remaining firm was lost in her quivering frame, “I haven’t done anything perverse as you’re suggesting-”
“Sweet lies,” Neutroboost snorted. “The facts remain the same: we still have a Decepticon officer on board our ship, probably plotting our demise. The best way to deliver us unto his master himself. And all of you just eat it up. Guard won’t listen to a word I say, the council thinks I’m all but just a figure-helm, a joke.”
“You weren’t the only one to have cared for someone, and lost them,” Nova muttered quietly. “You can’t pin Crookedwing’s offlining on Blackout-”
“I won’t hear you slander Crooked while you frag that revolting menace on my ship,” Neutro growled. “And if you so much as utter a word about my high-grade to anyone on this ship, I will make your life a living Pit.”
“Doing a fine job at that already.”
“Oh darling, you’ve no idea how much worse your pathetic little life could be. You thought being an experiment for some mech was bad? Losing what friends you thought you may have had? I could make all that look like a day at Six Lasers over Cybertron. You will keep your dirty mouth shut, because if Guard hears about this...”
“What happened to you?” Novastrike whispered with terror in her shaky voice. “You used to care-”
“I still care,” Neutroboost insisted furiously. “More than any of you do.”
“More than Guard?” she challenged.
“Guard’s too compassionate to see that he let a hellhound in a room of hydro-weasel,” Neutro defended with a hollow look in his optics. “And if he hears about this some how, some way, I will be coming for you.”
The emphasis in the pitch of his voice had Novastrike shrinking back from the mech. His optics looked slightly deranged, fueled with an unrestrained anger. She felt a chill run down her spinal strut as his glowering optics penetrated her like a blade.
Turning on his heel, Neutroboost went to stalk out of the room quickly and suddenly. The room was silent as he left, and the thick tang in the air of hatred dispersed quickly.
Moving her arms in front of her chassis anxiously, Novastrike rubbed her arms. It was worse than she imagined, but now it was no longer simply a generous gesture on her part to keep silent. A threat lingered over her like a black cloud.
After a few more moments, she realized she was wasting time gathering Blackout’s materials. He was probably going to be wondering where his speedy delivery service had went off to. With distracted movements, she hustled around the room to finish grabbing everything else she needed before running out of the room and down the corridor once more.
The door to the photon buster’s maintenance chamber opened as she jogged up to it, huffing and puffing out warm air loudly.
Blackout looked over at her as she entered with a smile. “Took you long enough. Maybe I should have sent Scorponok instead.”
“Maybe you should have,” Novastrike panted softly. Although, she was agreeing on behalf an entirely different reason he wasn’t aware of.
Raising an optic ridge slightly, Blackout emitted a faint rumble. “Everything okay?”
“Yeah, s’just a heavy box. You mind?”
“Not at all.”
Stepping gingerly around his minicon, the massive mech walked over and knelt. His servo gently grasped the tiny container from the equally tiny femme and he went to stand in full again.
“Any trouble finding anything?” he questioned, glancing at what was inside the box.
“Nope,” Nova vaguely responded, opening her subspace. She made a gesture to Blackout for him to kneel again and he did so with some surprise as she started placing the more sensitive pieces on top; careful not to jostle them.
“Thank you,” Blackout humbly rumbled as she finished, standing up once again. He walked over to the machine and sat the box down. Reaching inside, he picked something out carefully and handed it down to Scorponok.
As the bug fiddled with the piece of equipment, Blackout glanced back over his shoulder at the gasping femme. He offered a faint smile in her direction.
She could feel the air shift beside her and the scent of violence before Blackout’s holoform even gained full substance.
Nova didn’t shy away as he reached for her, strong servos ever so carefully pulling her in for a tight hug of appreciation. She felt a whole Pit of a lot more secure there, in his arms than anywhere else.
“Thank you,” he repeated a little firmer this time, placing a kiss at the top of her helm.
A smidgen of the tension in Nova’s shoulders melted away. She inhaled sharply, bringing in the dangerous aroma that came off the mech, and exhaled slowly. A vague smile nervously pulled at the corners of her mouth.
“You’re welcome.”
“You seem a bit strained,” Blackout noted, rubbing his servos along her shoulders and down her back. “Everything alright?”
An endless shiver moved through Novastrike’s frame. His touch was incredibly careful; full of nothing but gentleness. The curve of a smile grew on his face as he looked upon her with dim optics of high esteem.
The way he looked at her, Primus, she could just dissolve. There was so much consideration in the way he viewed her. Placing her concerns above all else, offering every bit of himself if it meant making sure she was happy and comfortable. It was far more than she deserved.
“Better now,” she murmured. Every bit of her words rang true. She sure felt a lot safer and at ease, right there, in his arms.
Novastrike leaned into Blackout’s holoform, resting her helm against his shoulder. He seemed a bit surprised by the gesture at first, but slowly went to rub soothing circles against her back.
Twitching her tail, Novastrike lightly wrapped it around Blackout’s waist. She could hear the faint sound of surprise escape him as he tried to peek at what exactly was on him. A soft laugh escaped her, snuggling closer.
Maybe there was nothing she could do to help Neutroboost, maybe there was. But for the moment, she would much rather put her attention on someone who actually made her feel a heck of a lot more special than she thought she was. And he seemed to have no problems whatsoever in giving her all the reassurance she needed as she nuzzled against him, breathing in his scent deeply as he held her close.

Each time I get into discussions about superhero films with others (friends, strangers, family) it always eventually leads to Nolan’s Batman movies. However, my opinion and feelings towards The Dark Knight don’t align with theirs. Resulting in arguments/debates. Mainly due to one scene in The Dark Knight I am going to dissect.
CONTAINS SPOILERS for Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Batman (1989), and Twin Peaks (1990-1991).
But first, I have to explain about “bathos”. Bathos is a term coined by 18th century poet Alexander Pope in his 1727 short essay Peri Bathous, Or the Art of Sinking in Poetry. In it, he writes about the abuse figures of speech and tropes are enduring thanks to bad writers. This creates bathos, the taking of something serious into something trivial or an anticlimax of sorts. Said juxtaposition causes unintentional humor thus “sinking” serious poetry. Unintentional bathos is known as “narm.” Or in The Dark Knight’s case, written by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, a serious realization blatantly defused with a joke.
But, let’s look at another quick example. In the David Lynch TV series Twin Peaks that combined straight-up farce, elements from soap operas, and non-sequitur humor into its very DNA, the funeral ceremony of the murdered Laura Palmer has some bathos. The scene opens with a somber and personal eulogy from the town reverend that gets interrupted by Johnny Horne’s yelled “Amen!”. A donnybrook then commences between two of Laura’s boyfriends. Immediately after this, Laura’s sobbing father dramatically leaps atop her coffin that continuously proceeds to go up and down (due to the mechanized lift apparently going haywire) inside the dug grave: the sound effects accompanying this sequence make it unintentionally funny.
In a similar vein, this often quoted line from The Dark Knight undermines the seriousness of what’s happening. Most people will recognize it I’m certain. And here we go.
Now this line comes after capturing Scarecrow and his thugs. During it, Batman stops gun-wielding inspired to do justice copycat Batmen: a clear nod to the Sons of Batman from Frank Miller’s comic The Dark Knight Returns. Interestingly, Nolan’s and Goyer’s Batman is fine with using an overly explosive Intimidate Mode on his tank-like property damaging causing Batmobile. My issue with these scenes in The Dark Knight is that Batman doesn’t condemn their actions. Nor does he label their actions as wrong or unnecessary. Then what does Batman do? He simply warns them not to perform vigilante acts in the future whilst also telling him he “doesn’t need help”. Then of course, copycat Batman Brian Wilson famously asks the Caped Crusader, “What’s the difference between you and me? What gives you the right?” Batman’s replies to Wilson’s weighty query with a bloody joke.
“I’m not wearing hockey pads.”
Basically, Batman said, “It is ‘kay that potentially you used your guns to stop other criminals or whatever. Just don’t do it again. I mean it.”
That was the misplaced bathos moment that angered and stayed me stronger than anything else the rest of the time I sat viewing The Dark Knight in theatres. It is meant to ignite a smirk or be perceived as droll…And I did, through clenched teeth and fists. If I truly meant to be a force for good, I wouldn’t want these dangerous people tarnishing my name or image at all. He could’ve said something, anything more. Borrow from The Dark Knight Returns by having Batman breaking their gun while proclaiming, “This is the weapon of the enemy. We do not need it. We will not use it.” He does bend one of the guns a copycat Batman has. Having such a speech would acknowledge the flawed approach of the copycats and maybe influence them to possibly drop the gun motif in the future. When we’re inspired by someone, we tend to listen and learn you know?
Alas he doesn’t. What?! This awful juxtaposition becomes even more obvious when one listens to what Bruce speaks in the following Know Your Limits Master Wayne scene to Alfred Pennyworth regarding the copycat gun-toting Batmen,
Bruce: “There were more copycats last night Alfred, with guns.
Alfred: Why not hire them and take the weekend off?
Bruce: That wasn’t exactly what I had in mind…When I said I wanted to inspire people.
Alfred: I know.”
See, at the point his stance concerning the copycats with guns is absolutely confirmed. Ironically in The Dark Knight Rises, Bane would be killed by fired weaponry courtesy of Catwoman utilizing Batman’s motorcycle vehicle. Yet, when it matters most, Batman essentially told the copycats nothing of significance. He didn’t impart a valuable lesson. Zilch! Isn’t he supposed to be a hero? A symbol actually worth embodying? Batman’s silence (besides that joke) doesn’t remotely suggest this.
In a way, this coincides with Batman’s “I won’t kill you, but I don’t have to save you” attitude seen towards Ra’s al Ghul in Batman Begins. His verbal declaration and subsequent refusal ends up killing Ra’s when the train crashes and explodes through a scheme Bats himself orchestrated. That’s manslaughter, by the way. Perhaps a small piece of Batman is cool with bad guys dying? Not that he’d admit this, obviously. Although, earlier in Begins, he sets an entire building ablaze with League of Shadows members insides, presumably being responsible for their deaths. That poser Ra’s Ken Watanabe portrays probably died, for sure. On top of that, bombs are implemented to stop cop cars chasing him as well (Jinkies!).
Not that Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman was better in this regard either (Batman blows up an entire factory with Joker’s men inside, purposely dragged Joker to his plummeting doom).
His lone method for halting Two-Face was tackling him? No Batarang? Are y’all aware that The Dark Knight is the first live-action motion picture without a Batarang used by Batman? Tackling was the best option?
I sincerely doubt it.
More like the most dramatic that fits into the movie’s title, er, kind of.
David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan were a bit too clever for their own good. “I’m whatever the writers need me to be.” Batman taking the fall for the demise of Harvey Dent makes little sense. Joker, who’s been killing people the entire movie, couldn’t be blamed? That slaying the District Attorney, Gotham’s white knight, was Joker’s master plan all along?
In other words, vilifying Batman in the story to match the name of the film is and has always been complete nonsense. This vilification along with the loss of plot device and not a fully formed character Rachel Dawes makes Batman hang up his cape and cowl for eight damn years, according to Rises. *GROANS* Why not, um, say that Jim Gordon, a celebrated hero cop, protected his in danger family? That would of worked. Maybe the, oh, I don’t know, truth? A disfigured man that had his good side messed up driven to intense insanity by another madman? Joker did indeed have a hand in Harvey’s descent into madness. That is indisputable! Established by the story dirty cops working for Joker took Harvey’s life? The killer got away and Batman is pursuing him/her? All of those are significantly more plausible than telling Gotham that Batman killed Harvey Dent, in my opinion.
