I think I always knew it’d end like this.

Not in some battlefield blaze or engine-fueled inferno, not screaming, not fighting.

Just... quiet.

I’m old now. Not in the tragic way, either. Just regular old. Achy joints, silver hair, laugh lines. My fire’s mostly in my memories now, and maybe in the way my hips crack when I stretch too fast.

And he’s still beautiful. Of course he is. Bastard doesn’t age.

I tease him about it—tell him he’s stuck with some crone while he struts around looking like a sculptor’s favorite sin. He always rolls his eyes and tells me I’ve only gotten more radiant with time. It’s sappy. I pretend to gag. He pretends to bite me. We’re disgusting. I love it.

Sometimes I catch him watching me when he thinks I’m not looking. Not with pity—he knows better than that. Just... holding me in his eyes, like he’s trying to memorize me down to every wrinkle. Like he’s afraid the years will steal me before he’s ready.

I told him once, “You get forever. I get now. So let’s make ‘now’ the kind of story that lasts even longer than you do.”

He didn’t say anything at first. Just touched my face like it might vanish under his fingers.

Then kissed me like he meant to carry me through the centuries.
