so i didn't contribute monetarily outside esims, and general aid to pcrf and msf for almost 8 months into the genocide, partly bc giving to an individual gofundme seemed like making a choice between who deserved my sympathy but mostly because i felt really conflicted about giving money that would go towards lining the pockets of price gouging suppliers and egyptian border guards. the problem was that for the first 6 months i still saw something like the 2023 status quo possible wrt gaza, of international aid continuing to enter gaza but on a drip feed. but now i have conceded that the global left is not capable of helping palestine in any structured way and israel will let aid rot on the border and nobody will stop them. you might as well help the people you can.
i had an almost identical experience during the massive oxygen and bed shortages in new delhi during covid. initially, we donated to relief groups organising oxygen supplies, but then the infrastructure kept collapsing with no end in sight and the only thing you could do for people was help them pay the massive bribes being demanded to keep their families alive. we paid the bribe for my uncle and helped a school friend pay it for her father too.
anyways: plugging this gofundme to raise funds for a bone reconstruction surgery and house rebuilding for @mohammedatallah. organised by portugal based artist haruka aoki. verified by 90-ghost here.

In the days leading to August 5, 2019 and in the weeks and months to come, Kashmir became a site of unfathomable cruelty. Thousands of Kashmiris were detained; pro-India politicians were placed under house arrest, pro-freedom leaders as well as minors were rounded up and thrown in jail. Young boys were shipped off to Indian prisons 1,500km away in Agra and Varanasi. Foreign journalists and international human rights groups were banned from access to Kashmir. The region was placed under a complete communication blackout. Cellular phones, Internet, landline services, and even the postal services were dismantled. News traveled by word of mouth. Journalists compressed photos and video onto memory cards and smuggled them out with passengers en route to Delhi. Schools, offices, banks, and businesses were closed for months. Life came to a standstill.
On August 5, 2019, the Modi government revoked both Articles 370 and 35A, split the region into two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, and placed them under the direct control of Delhi. Kashmir had been effectively annexed. It was a stunning rebuke to the myth of Indian democracy as well as the veneer of Kashmiri autonomy. Observers warned that this move represented an intensification of India's settler-colonial project in Indian-occupied Kashmir. Under the new status of the state, India would now have the legal justification to allow non-Kashmiris to access residency rights in Kashmir as well as purchase land that had previously been restricted to Kashmiri permanent residents, or state subjects. The end goal was now within sight: Kashmir's Muslim-majority demography would be changed in favor of Indian Hindus. In time, elections would be held, and democracy would cover for the ethnocratic, colonial rule that had been imposed on the region.
Revoking Article 370 and Article 35A were long-held goals of Hindu nationalists and supremacists in India. They had resented the autonomy PM Nehru had "granted" Kashmir in 1947 and wished to see Kashmir fully integrated into India. For Hindu-supremacists, these two articles were an obstruction to the region's full integration into the Indian state and had contributed to the rise of "separatism" or "terrorism" in the region—which is how India refers to Kashmiris' decades long resistance to Indian rule. To the Hindu right, the problems in Kashmir were borne out of India's coddling of Kashmiri Muslims. The question of Kashmiri self-determination had never been on the agenda. The removal of the two Articles was therefore portrayed as ushering in a "New Kashmir" in which peace and prosperity would arrive through Indian investment and development. This had been a central plank of Narendra Modi's second election campaign, too.

The moment Suella Braverman tried to say that "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" is antisemitic and hateful.
Should have been the moment everyone collectively realised it wasn't.
Because for one thing if it had been, she probably wouldn't have had a problem with it.
But because the alternative would be advocating and aiding the Palestinians.
And to quote thisishyphen, no one hates immigrants more than brown tories.
Like, remember when Suella said that seeing immigrants be deported to Rwanda is her "dream" and "obsession"?
A statement she maintains is true from as early as February this year.
Same woman who argues that multiculturalism in this country has failed.
Despite the fact if it had failed, she wouldn't be in the position she's in.
Nor in the country.
Suella is so anti immigrant that her own uncle in Delhi called her out weeks ago to be "cautious."
And remember she is a child of immigrants.
And you expect me to believe that this lady would be willing to support and aid a minority group in another country?
When she has such a distaste for the immigrants and people of colour in her own country?
If it was actually hateful to wave a Palestinian flag, their would be one flying on her own house.
But it isn't.
And Suella Braverman, imperial coconut that she is wants to make it hateful.
Wants to use this chant for freedom to seem hateful, so that she can justify the genocide of the Palestinians.
Because if there's one thing she loves more than dreaming of dangerously deporting minorities.
It's watching them being killed on her TV screen, while she racks the profits.
But her attempts aren't working.
The Police have said they aren't going to arrest anyone for saying the chant.
Despite Suella's demands they "use all available power" to crack down on it.
We just had the biggest Pro Palestine protest today, 21st October 2023.
With around 300,000 people protesting in London. Waving flags, chants and all.
And it's not going to be the last.
The British government doesn't speak for us.
We are with Palestine, from the river to the sea.

World Sparrow Day
World Sparrow Day, observed annually on March 20, is a day to raise awareness of the protection of sparrows. We are particularly excited about this holiday because we just can’t resist the cuteness of these little birds and we know at the end of this article, you will be as excited to join too.
History of World Sparrow Day
World Sparrow Day is an initiative started by the Nature Forever Society of India (founded by Mohammed Dilawar) along with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France and many other organizations around the world. Though the holiday carries the name Sparrow, it was mainly created for awareness of Sparrows but also includes the beauty and biodiversity of other common birds that may share the same space as us.
Mohammed Dilawar, a dedicated conservationist, started the campaign to provide special care for house Sparrows in Nashik. The idea to make the campaign official was born during an informal discussion at the office of the Nature Forever Society. Thereafter, the first World Sparrow Day was observed in 2010 all around the world.
It created a platform for bird conservationists to network and exchange ideas to improve conservation. It aims to provide a point of contact for people around the world to come together and create awareness of the necessity for the protection of common biodiversity or species of lower conservation.
Sparrows or house sparrows have been known to live in green patches and backyards chirping away in urban areas though, during the harsh summers, they require cool shades and water. They’ve always been quite common in residential areas but are currently on the verge of extinction due to noise pollution, lack of nesting sites in modern buildings, pesticide usage, and non-availability of food as reported by ornithologists.
The awareness created led to the house sparrow becoming the state bird of  Delhi in 2012.
As the years go by, more people are joining the campaign to conserve these birds as a way of giving back to nature. Some have gone as far as creating bird nests for sparrows and other common, birds in the community.

Police in the Indian capital, Delhi, have raided the homes of prominent journalists and authors in connection with an investigation into the funding of news website NewsClick.
NewsClick's founder Prabir Purkayastha and a colleague were arrested. Police also seized laptops and mobile phones.
Officials are reportedly investigating allegations that NewsClick got illegal funds from China - a charge it denies.
Critics say the move is an intentional attack on press freedom.
Started in 2009, NewsClick is an independent news and current affairs website known to be critical of the government. In 2021, it was raided by tax authorities on allegations of breaking India's foreign direct investment rules.
The co-ordinated raids at 30 locations on Tuesday are some of the largest and most extensive on India's media in recent years. Police later confirmed they had arrested Mr Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty, the website's head of human resources.
"A total of 37 male suspects have been questioned at premises, nine female suspects have been questioned at their respective places of stay and digital devices, documents etc have been seized/collected for examination," a police statement said.
Opposition leaders accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of a "fresh attack on the media". But Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said investigative agencies were merely doing their job.
How did the raids happen?
Among those also questioned were journalists Abhisar Sharma, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Aunindyo Chakravarty, Urmilesh, Bhasha Singh, popular satirist Sanjay Rajoura and historian Sohail Hashmi. Some were taken to police stations.
Searches were also carried out at the website's office in Delhi, news agency ANI reported.
In Mumbai, activist Teesta Setalvad's house was also searched. Ms Setalvad has long fought for victims of the deadly 2002 riots in Gujarat state and has written articles critical of the government for NewsClick.
A source close to Mr Purkayastha told the BBC that more than 15 policemen arrived at the editor's home at 06:30 local time (01:00 GMT).
"They did not produce any warrants or paperwork, questioned him for several hours and took away all the electronic devices they found at home," they said. Later, news agencies showed him being taken away by the police in a vehicle.
Mr Rajoura's lawyer, Ilin Saraswat, said the comedian was raided at the same time and that police took away his laptop, his two phones, some DVDs of his old work and some documents.
"The police said that Mr Rajoura is not named in the current investigation, but since he has worked with the website, he will be interrogated. We have not been provided a copy of the police complaint," he added.
BBC India offices searched by income tax officials
Indian tax authorities raid critical media outlets
India top court frees Muslim comic on bail
According to reports, the raids are in connection with a case registered against NewsClick in August after a New York Times report alleged that the website had received funds from an American millionaire to spread "Chinese propaganda".
It claimed that Neville Roy Singham worked closely with the "Chinese government media machine" and used his network of non-profit groups and shell companies to "finance its propaganda worldwide".
A case was reportedly registered against the website under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA, a draconian anti-terror law that makes it nearly impossible to get bail. NewsClick has rejected all the charges as false.
Who was raided?
All the people who were raided have been associated with NewsClick - some are employees, while others have worked on freelance projects.
Prabir Purkayastha, its founder and editor-in-chief, is the author of a number of books and a founding member of the Delhi Science Forum. During the 1975 Emergency - when civil liberties were suspended - he was jailed along with several opposition politicians.
Bhasha Singh is an activist and journalist who has reported extensively on manual scavenging and farmers' suicides. She has accused the government of being anti-women and on Monday appeared in a NewsClick video expressing concern over the increasing trend of members of the governing BJP praising the man who assassinated India's independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.
Abhisar Sharma is a prominent video journalist known for his critical views of the government. He worked for BBC Hindi before moving to work at the NDTV news channel. One of his last videos covered widespread protests by government employees against a new pension scheme.
Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, writer, journalist and filmmaker, is best known for his investigations into billionaire tycoon Gautam Adani and is facing several defamation suits filed by the industrialist. Earlier this year, he was mentioned in a report by Hindenburg Research which alleged that companies owned by Mr Adani had engaged in decades of "brazen" stock manipulation and accounting fraud - allegations denied by the industrialist who is perceived as being close to PM Modi.

Amit Kumar had everything going for him. After graduating in engineering and landing a decent job, Amit wanted to settle down with his childhood sweetheart Renu. The couple had known each other since Class IX and dreamt of a life together. The only difficulty was that Renu belonged to a Brahmin family and Amit was a Dalit.
With their homes barely a kilometre apart in Garhwa district of Jharkhand, Renu knew her family would never approve of the match. The couple decided to run away and tie the knot in another State. And thus began their tale of unending harassment and tragedy.
The couple married at a temple in Dehradun and got their marriage registered there. They had just about settled down at Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh when, in a midnight raid, the Uttar Pradesh police took away Renu, claiming that she had been abducted. Amit and Renu have not seen or spoken to each other since that fateful night of August 13, 2021.
Amit’s life has been a quagmire of legal battles and dismissed habeas corpus petitions since then. “I fear my wife is no more,” he told The Hindu.
Activists say such tragic situations can be avoided if couples like Amit and Renu are provided safe houses and special protection by the State governments as mandated by the Supreme Court.
According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the number of “honour killings” in the country was 24, 25 and 33 in 2019, 2020 and 2021, respectively. Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand topped the list in 2021 and 2020, while Manipur was on top in 2019.
The government in 2021 informed Parliament that there were 145 “honour killing” incidents in the country between 2017 and 2019.
Interestingly, though the NCRB report attributed only 25 deaths to “honour killings” in 2020, it said there were 27 deaths due to casteism and 1,558 due to “illicit relationship”. Similarly, in 2021, 33 deaths were listed under “honour killings”, but 1,544 and 1,532 under “illicit relationship” and “love affairs”, respectively.
So far, only Delhi, Haryana and Punjab have safe houses for inter-faith and inter-religious couples. Kerala has only announced the setting up of a safe house.
In fact, only 21 States have said that they have complied with the Supreme Court directives, which means that they have asked the police officers concerned of a State for strict compliance, according to Dhanak for Humanity, a non-governmental organisation which works with such couples, helping them solemnise their marriages and providing legal support.
The Supreme Court had in 2018 directed that safe houses be set up in every district as well as a special cell in States for couples facing opposition from families and community.
Gaurav Yadav, an engineer from IIT Chennai, said he was working with survivors of “honour crimes” and couples who are in hiding to petition the government for more safe houses across the country.
“Soon we will form an official grouping and petition the government to follow the Supreme Court directives on safe houses and special cells,” Mr. Yadav said, adding that he had organised a convention regarding the same in Delhi recently.
He said though couples had been demanding that safe houses be set up, the State administrations had looked the other way.
An example is of Ravikant Chandrawanshi and Alisha, who had a harrowing time getting married under the Special Marriage Act in Chhattisgarh.
The inter-faith couple at first decided to elope and marry in Bilaspur. However, a lack of support system and security, including finances, saw them return home in Kawardha within four days.
“As my wife’s family were well to do and politically connected, they kept up the pressure on us. Finally, we had to take legal recourse and approached the High Court asking them to direct the State administration to provide the mandated safe house and police protection.
“However, we were informed that there was no safe house and Alisha had to go to a sakhi centre or a women’s safe house,” Mr. Chandravanshi said.
Though the couple approached the highest of authorities, they were not given any police protection either and had to go into hiding for around six months after their marriage.
According to Asif Iqbal of Dhanak for Humanity, most States send the girl to a Nari Niketan after couples approach them. “It is here that the girl is the most insecure as her family mostly approaches her and puts pressure to go back. Many a time, this also leads to what is known as honour killing of the girl”.
Sanjay Sachadev of Love Commandoes, an organisation which rescues and shelters such couples, said, “The need of the hour is safe houses across the country. In almost every case, the police try and send the girl to a women’s shelter and the boy is left to fend for himself.”
A couple who are staying in a Delhi safe house and did not wish to be identified said that they could not have thought of living together had it not been for the security of the safe house.
Mr. Iqbal, whose organisation has helped many couples seek legal recourse to stay together and get married, said that of the distress calls he receives, the most were from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

hi tt! sorry for the random ask, but i'm moving to india next week and i was wondering if you had any tips for apartment hunting? (looking to rent a place in delhi)
Hello friend!!!
Gosh, idk if I'll be any help in this area; Delhi is a whole different beast from where I live down in the South, so I can't give you very specific advice about the area. Plus I'm generally quite useless at adulting in this country coz I just operate differently, having lived outside all my life (up until 5 years ago) But in general:
Take the help of someone who is familiar with the area and has your best interests at heart. Warna, broker se lekar landlord tak, everyone is out to screw you over and make maxxxx profit. So you really would benefit from someone who knows the places and rehen-sehen of Delhi well;
Plan your budget and shortlist the location you'd like to live in first, and then look out for location-specific facebook groups for this purpose for leads;
Make sure the area is safe and well-lit at all hours; best if it has allotted security for your building/society/etc.;
Check that all amenities (groceries, pharmacies, decent food places, etc.) you need are there around;
Check if electrical/plumbing/infrastructure/etc. everything is working properly before you move in, and who is responsible (you or landlord) for payment/repairs if something does go wrong (which it will. this is India. of course it will eventually.);
Do a vibe check with the neighbours/roommates. You'll have to live with these ppl long-term and it's best to only move in if the vibes match. Like if you like your peace and quiet, and they're the loud party type, then that's obviously gonna be a hellish year while you live there.
Make sure you clearly establish an agreement with landlord prior to moving in; India has absolutely bizarre rules they like to impose on renters - from what you eat (some people refuse to give houses to non veg eaters), whom you can have over (no friends allowed after blah blah pm types. Like, fuck, what kinda rules are these for a grownass adult living on their own?!?!?!?!) to pets being allowed. So yeah, make all these things really clear and get it in writing if possible before you move in so there's no scope for drama later.
If you're living solo, there's a bunch of these new age living setup thingies, like Stanza Living etc., where they give you a furnished room with all amenities included (like wifi, housekeeping, laundry, recreational facilities, etc.) If those are suitable for you budget/location-wise, check those out!
