TASTING NOTES
I spent the day not thinking about the set, preferring to head into Spacebar “cold” to see what developed. But, I had spent a fair amount of time since my last set combing through online lists and the singles section of the local Record Hut to find some fresh material. And, a lot of it found its way onto the decks and into the ears of the listeners at Third Space Saturday. I do love the format of the single. I’m not necessarily attached to the extended mixes; often I will play the LP cut included on the single, or the 7” mix if it is on there. I like the focus of the shorter versions, but sometimes the songs lend themselves to the stretched-out format. Just depends on the song, as always.
It is really hot in Boise – not just summer heat, but triple-digit temperatures every day for weeks on end. I got sweaty just loading the rig. When I got downtown, there was a huge event of some sort happening in Capitol Park, with several streets blocked, and I worried that I would have trouble finding a parking space. But I found a space really close, and rolled my gear into the elevator. Nothing worked. The door wouldn’t even close. I text Will, and am surprised when he appears at the elevator. We lug all my gear down the stairs, past the line going upstairs to the speakeasy. Evidently, the fire department had visited just before I got there, because the fog machine had tripped the fire alarm. Will is working the door, and I recognize absolutely none of the bar staff.
I’m later than I wanted to be, so after I set myself up, I hurriedly weigh my options. I usually start with a song that has kind of a fanfare intro, but tonight it seemed appropriate to ease into things, so I chose “Strawberry Letter 23” by the Brothers Johnson, a new 12” single I acquired last week. My first hour is a combination of 12” extended versions and LP cuts; going from Wire to KC and the Sunshine Band to Judas Priest to George Clinton sounded better in person than it looks on the page. The bar scene is ebbing and flowing as usual, but it’s summer, people are outside, or in the mountains, or hunkered down in the most air-conditioned spot they can find.
I put on a long Grace Jones single, and Will gives me a tour of the changes coming to the bar. The room that used to house the print shop is cleared out. It’s going to house more machines, and be a separate space within the space. The music will still be there, but there will be more options for people, and a better use of the space, which was not generating enough use before. It will be good to give people more places to hang, to be with their people. Our sound volume is lower, which I kind of like. It presents the music better, and makes things more comfortable.
My son shows up with a posse. He comes into the booth and greets me. I express my unease, how I feel like I’m aging out of such things as nightlife, and fun, but he is unconvinced. Says I’m fine. He heads out on the floor with his crew, and I lose track of him for a while. About a half-hour later he comes back up to say goodbye, introduces me to a friend, and they ask about the Grime record I played. Roots Manuva. They dig it. I told them I couldn’t see anyone reacting to the music one way or the other, aside from the kid who came up and scrolled through the new internet jukebox that’s on the wall by the bar. They assured me that people were vibing, even the youngsters. It was good to hear, and I noticed people moving to the beat after that.
After Sam leaves, I don’t see a single person I know come in for the rest of the night. I am ok with this. Not that I don’t love the support from people I know, but I’m also a realist. I know it would require great effort for me to be out downtown on a Saturday night, so I understand what it entails.
I’ve hardly played any 7” records, mostly concentrating on longer 12” mixes from my new acquisitions. It feels really good. I’m putting things together in the right places, there are very few technical gaffes from me, and I generally feel good about how I’ve put records together.
The Donna Summer 12” single “I Feel Love” is a record I’ve been looking for my entire adult life, and now it’s mine. The 8-minute version did not disappoint! The mechanized spine of the song, the repetitive bubbling riff, it was the first record I heard from her, and I instantly became a fan. The simplicity and directness appealed to me, as did the four-on-the-floor kick drum.
I put a different Nazareth track into the mix, RAZAMANAZ. (I don’t know, it just seems to work better in all caps.) I had it cued and ready to go, but I then reversed course, and instead of following it up with RUN-DMC (again with the all caps!) I switched the order, and played “Walk With Me” first. It worked. The Nazareth track is like Motorhead, with a “better” singer. I need to find a better copy of the record, though. It was kind of worn. So is the Bauhaus record I plucked from a dollar section a while ago. Even though it’s got an audible (and visible) scratch on it, it plays through, and the surface noise doesn’t detract – it kind of adds something to the sound of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.” It’s kind of a gothic doppelganger to the Donna Summer record – repetitive, atmospheric, less busy and more organic. Music is amazing that way. Very disparate intentions coming through, and changing the way things sound. And you don’t stop/you go on and on/til the break of dawn.
The thing is, though, a lot of the old 7” records from the ’50s and ’60s still sound great, even with the wear. The record players they were made for were not like the Hi-Fi players for classical and pop records of the day, and by pop records, I mean things like Doris Day, Johnny Mathis and other adult music. I’m fascinated by how time takes language and meaning and metamorphosizes it to fit the needs of people, of audiences, of commerce. You don’t/can’t control it, but you can ride it, and see where it goes.
That is the essence of what I am trying to do: follow the through line, and paint pictures, express myself, play things that sound good to me, communicate a feeling and vibe to people. I didn’t put Amyl and the Sniffers next to the Kingsmen and follow it up with Kenny Rogers to be a clever show-off, I did it because I thought it would sound good, that they were all good records, and the juxtaposition would make a listener reconsider what those songs were about.
Or, they could just vibe to the beat.
I’m so happy I get to do this, and I’m glad to have the opportunity to contribute to Spacebar Arcade. I sometimes feel I should be doing more – get on the microphone and get the party started, as it were. It’s just not me. All I can do is show up until they tell me not to. It’s a tough business. It’s not complicated, but it is unpredictable. You can do everything right, and still fail. Luck is underestimated by our culture. Being in the right place, at the right time, doing something you love and believe in and being rewarded? It’s not a given. Trust this: it’s just business. Pivot. Change course. Listen. Be true to yourself.
Next Third Space Saturday for me is on September 21st, 2024. I’m taking August off for Holiday. Just like a European.

the french were on some shit in the late 60s and 70s with funk that i have yet to discover from other countries. this shit was insanely close to hip hop and i can only fuckin say that maybe they were just dramatic that way. anyway check this shit out
youtube
Whether through your own searching or unfortunate intervention by friends or strangers online, at some point you heard Immortal Technique's dance with the devil. But we won't get into the lyrics. Immortal sampled the theme to Love Story, a movie from 1970, from composer Francis Lai. This isn't the song he sampled, but wait for the drop, and listen to the strings and drums. I don't know how the French's particular flare for the dramatic lead them to this conclusion, but it certainly surprised me.
youtube
This next track was also composed in 1970 for a personal art project by William Sheller. Just... listen. And if you want to treat yourself, set the playback speed to 1.25
IIRC, either Dan the Automator or Kid Koala sampled this for 3030, the first song on their album Deltron 3030 with Del tha Funkee Homosapien

Too $hort, Del the Funky Homosapien, Sway, and E-40 Define "The Bay Sound"
By Jay Quan
Published Fri, October 28, 2022 at 10:15 AM EDT
youtube
Rock The Bells recently spoke to a few Bay area Hip-Hop icons about the sound of the Bay for Rock The Bells Radio's All City Day: Bay Area, which dedicates an entire day to Hip-Hop from the Bay Area and features music and commentary from Too $hort, E-40, Spice 1, Money B of Digital Underground, Del The Funky Homosapien, and more. Additionally, Bay Area DJs including DJ Fuze, DJ Apollo, and DJ D-Sharp will contribute exclusive mixes.
MC and Hip-Hop journalist Sway Calloway, who is also participating in RTB Radio's All City Day: Bay Area, talked about the Bay's expansive musical scope.
"To me, Bay Area Hip-Hop is an extension of R&B and soul with different variants of street," he explained. "It's soul mixed with technology and so it's really about where you're from, your region, and what inspired you. Sly and the Family Stone, a Bay Area group, was a heavy influence on us. From songs like 'Everyday People,' to the way they played their bass and mixed their drums influenced us."
Sway stresses the influence of live instrumentation and funk bands on the area.
"A lotta that live instrumentation like Con Funk Shun was high energy," he explained. "For us, Con Funk Shun was equivalent to somebody like The Dazz Band or The Commodores. Sheila E. and her family were very huge with Latin percussion and the grooves that they included in their music — that's all Bay Area. So when you hear those older groups that were around before Too $hort and Tony! Toni! Toné!, you understand where that information that informed their music came from. Too $hort, Tony! Toni! Toné! Sheila E., MC Hammer, Souls Of Mischief, The Luniz, Rappin' 4-Tay, Sway & Tech — the list goes on. You'll find 20 or 30 different sounds coming from 20 or 30 different artists from the Bay based on the fact that a lot of older groups influenced our sound. It's Funk and Soul mixed with Hip-Hop and technology, all rolled up in one with some dope-ass melodies and crispy, precise vocals with true-to-life lyrics. That's the Bay Area sound."
Rock The Bells Radio dedicates an entire day to Hip-Hop from the Bay Area, California. Tune into All City Day: Bay Area to hear music and commentary from Too $hort, E-40, Sway, Spice 1, Money B of Digital Underground, Del The Funky Homosapien, and more. Plus hear exclusive mixes from some of The Bay's best DJs including – DJ Fuze, DJ Apollo, and DJ D-Sharp. Premieres 10/28 at 8 am ET on Rock The Bells Radio, Sirius XM Ch. 43. Listen to Rock The Bells Radio on @SiriusXM free for 3 months. Learn more: http://www.siriusxm.com/RTB3.

James Brown: “Stoned To The Bone” Italian 7″ (1974)
You’re all here because Del The Funky Homosapien sampled this at 5:51 for “Mistadobalina” (’91) and made it damn funky. While I’m here, I’ll point out that James Brown’s name is in American-flag on an epe-popping Italian 7″ pressing. And the A-side is ‘part 1′ as the Stoned-” album version is more than 10 minutes long, running across both sides on the entire 45.

(RECORDED ON APRIL 2012)
I was talking about this idea for a mixtape for quite some time now. It was tough because I wanted to do so much with it but still keep the smooth westcoast vibe throughout.
I finally disciplined myself to sit down and look for a tracklist with my favorite westcoast artist. I opened with Tupac’s “To Live and DIe in LA” because it has that cruisin’ down sunset (liking the scene) vibe. I wanted to throw in Cube’s “It was a Good Day,” but I opted with the just-as-smooth, “You Know How We Do.” The rest of the track list kind of made itself. I really wanted to represent the westcoast G-Funk, Gangsta vibe, and raw talent.
I wanted to throw in some Odd Future and Blu since I put Kendrick Lamar on herebut Odd Future Hits too hard for this mixtape. and I couldn’t find a right place effort Blu.
Track Listing
01. tupac – to live and die in l.a. music ask game take 2
i already did this but was tagged by @culumacilinte and had so much fun rediscovering music last time that I’m doing it again. so welcome to the niche corner part 2: is “sad electrofunk” a legitimate genre of music?
“Bourbon”, Gallant: I have a thing for falsettos. An awesome downtempo alt-R&B track. Makes you sad and also makes you wanna dance.
“Sprawl II”, Arcade Fire: While this is far from my favorite song on the album, “The Suburbs” is one of my favorite albums of the last ten years. One of my coworker’s mom’s worked for their record label, and leaked her son, an Arcade Fire fan, “The Suburbs” weeks before it was released. We listened to it on repeat. It reminds me of being young and dumb in New York City, racing around the streets on my bike and hanging out at the Banks and trying to learn BMX and falling and hurting myself and generally failing completely.
“Baby Sucks,” Polica: A bass-heavy 80’s inflected track whose catchy beats contrast against haunting, aching vocals
“Let Yourself Go”, Big Daddy Kane: An old-school track off Kane’s seminal 1994 album, “Daddy’s Home”
“Zero Hill”, the Herbaliser featuring Twin Peaks: A dystopian hip-hop track with an awesome droning ANALOG baseline--that’s an actual electric bass, up at the top of the mix! I love hiphop that mixes real instruments with the samples.
“No Way”, Young Fathers: If you don’t know who Young Fathers are, you’re missing out! They’re a Scottish band that mixes rap, R&B, and African beats. Their songs are powerfully emotional and feel a kick to the stomach. Though they didn’t come up on this playlist, “Sister”, “Toy”, and “I Heard” are my favorites by them.
“Moon”, Beth Orton: I have loved Beth Orton since Portishead in the 90s. This song is witchy, dark, and haunting. Her falsetto in the bridge gives me shivers.
“Secret in the Dark, Juan Maclean Remix”, Monika: Yes, I love trashy Euro dance music, why do you ask? Samples Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious”, which is probably why I like it.
“Call It Heaven”, Shakey Graves featuring Esme Patterson: A stripped down, downhome arrangement that’s all about the dueting voices. I love the way that the singers push their voices to the limit; the imperfection and the gravelly, broken quality of their voices makes this song ache.
“Fantasy”, Kari Faux: Fierce lady hiphop with jazzy horns and a strong anti-patriarchy message.
“Electric Mistress”, Jamiroquai: OK, Jamiroquai are legit one of my favorite bands, you can stop laughing at me now. I remember buying “Traveling without Moving” and listening to it so much I wore out the CD. No one does “sad electrofunk” quite like Jamiroquai! This song is a riot of electronic blips and samples of ringing bells.
“Today’s Your Day”, Fatlip: Just a super fun hip-hop song with a great beat. Mixes rap verses with a Parliament-style singing. I love putting this song on repeat and letting my fingers type to it.
“Runaway,” Nice as Fuck: Reminds me of a modern PJ Harvey or Liz Phair song. Strong female vocalists with a lo-fi arrangement: analog drum and bass, with some samples
“Masterminds”, Hieroglyphics feat. Tajal: Hieroglyphics is an old-school West Coast hip-hop collective where Del the Funky Homosapien got his start. It’s like sci-fi hip hop
“Now or Never”, Smoove and Turrell: I usually prefer the more funk-infused songs by Smoove and Turrell. “Now or Never” is a departure from their usual style, an almost-vaudevillian R&B song.
“Super Hero”, Kool Keith & MF Doom: Name a more iconic duo that Kool Keith & MF Doom. I’ll wait... Oh, you can’t. Thats OK, this is a nerdy rap song that sounds like reading a comic book. The beat in the background sounds like walking into a dungeon in a video game (I’m pretty sure Kool Keith actually sampled the Jehovah theme song from Final Fantasy VII in this song!)
“Action”, by Cassius, Cat Power, and Mike D: This is a weirdo. Genre-defying. A vaguely Caribbean beat, an aggressive rhyme style, and Cat Power’s melancholy voice. Somehow, it works!
“Steve Biko (Stir it Up)”, A Tribe Called Quest: A old-school icon from Jamaica, Queens. One of my faves since the 90s! I used to have this album on cassette tape
“Magic Together (Instrumental)”, Lack of Afro: A new-school funk musician. I love listening to instrumental versions of funk and hiphop songs to get me in the mood to write
“Born into the Sunset (Remix)”, Temples with Lindstrom and Prins Thomas: Another mostly-instrumental electrofunk track for writing times.

I have yet to hear a single good criticism of Humanz
"It has too many featured artists!"
Well for the price of two concert tickets (b/c obviously I wasn't going alone) I got to see my favorite band + like 5 or 6 other artists live, including the elusive Del The Funkee Homosapien, so, sorry you're bitter/ungrateful about that I guess?
"It's too political!"
Jaime and Damon literally started Gorillaz because they were tired of the empty, meaningless, garbage they'd hear on the radio. They set out to make music that had a point from the get go, all the way up to their premire music video (depending on where you were), Clint Eastwood. That is literally what that song is about. Throughout the years, they started tackling other topics too. Kids With Guns and Dirty Harry are anti gun songs, and Dirty Harry is also an anti war song. Rock It's video couldn't be more blatant in its message about not worshiping celebrities, which is what the Reject False Icons movement was all about. Almost every song on Plastic Beach has to do with pollution and how we're hurting the enviroment. That's the theme of that whole ass phase. Half the band (I don't count Cyborg Noodle) was living on an island of literal garbage. Look, I'm not gonna say every song they made has some super deep meaning. Some are just fun bops, and that includes some of the songs on Humanz because one of themes of that album is an "End-of-the-world party". But them having songs that do have meaning is far from a new thing, politics included.
"It doesn't sound like Gorillaz!"
What I imagine people mean by this is "there aren't enough alternative songs!" because your average person who's probably just heard like fucking... idk, Feel Good Inc, Clint Eastwood (though that sounds more like dark reggae to me but w/e) maybe the first half of Dirty Harry, will listen to those and think Gorillaz is an alternative band. Here's the thing though; Gorillaz dabs in a little bit of everything. I know it's a bit of a faux pas to do this but I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in music genres since some sound very similar. So for my sanity, and just for a frame of reference, let's look at the genre listings wikipedia has for Gorillaz as a band:
5 genres are listed here and 1 of those is alternative, and only half that.
But I also dug a little deeper and looked at the genres of specific songs. Here is a list of genres I found not already listed here, which also is not exhaustive:
Disco
Funk
Electropop
Funk Rock
New Wave
Electro Funk
Synth Pop
R&B
The total is now 12. I didn't look at any singles for Humanz when I made this list. Critics have even more labels for their music, enough to probably double this list. With this in mind, I think it's safe to say Gorillaz doesn't really have a set genre.
Interestingly, though, I have seen almost none of this criticism for The Now Now (which also isn't a bad album, don't get me wrong), even though it also doesn't have any alternative songs on it, at least none that I've heard. So maybe your problem isn't that it doesn't sound like Gorillaz, but that it doesn't sound like the type of Gorillaz songs you like? Maybe you just don't like the genres given more spotlight in Humanz? Just something to think about.
"It doesn't have any good songs!"
Sorry I was too busy dropping my ass before my ship heading for the Andromeda galaxy crashes into Saturnz rings Barz. The Strobelites I had installed make the whole thing more festive though.
...okay, I know that was awful, and there are more songs I like that I couldn't fit in, but like. You get the point. This album is full of bangers. Open your ears and your heart. Then, open your wallet and buy Humanz, because it’s a good fucking album
