An open letter to the U.S. Senate
Don’t confirm Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense
48 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!
The choice of Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army veteran, as the next secretary of defense is concerning given the significant responsibilities and experience typically required for this critical role overseeing the U.S. military. While Hegseth served in Afghanistan and Iraq, he lacks the high-level command experience and strategic leadership background that is customary for this cabinet position. Previous secretaries of defense have held high military ranks and garnered extensive operational and policy expertise over decades of service. Ensuring strong and seasoned leadership atop the Department of Defense is paramount for maintaining military readiness, supporting servicemembers and their families, and promoting America's security interests around the world. The cabinet nomination process exists to thoroughly vet candidates' qualifications. I urge careful scrutiny and deliberation on whether Hegseth's record merits confirmation to this uniquely consequential position in charge of our nation's defense enterprise and global force posture. Our women and men in uniform deserve a secretary whose credentials and capabilities are commensurate with the immense duties of this office.

UK Military Preparedness
In recent headlines, the head of the British Army made a startling declaration: the UK must be ready to fight a war within the next three years. While such statements may be intended to highlight the urgency of bolstering national defence, they can have unintended and far-reaching consequences, potentially making us a laughing stock on the global stage.
The Importance of Military Readiness
First and foremost, the need for military preparedness cannot be overstated. In an increasingly volatile world, with geopolitical tensions on the rise, the UK must ensure its armed forces are well-equipped, well-trained, and ready to respond to any threats. This involves modernising equipment, enhancing cyber capabilities, and maintaining robust alliances with international partners. However, the manner in which this message is communicated is crucial.
The Pitfalls of Public Announcements
Publicly declaring a timeline for military readiness can be problematic for several reasons:
Perception of Weakness: Announcing that we need three years to be ready for war might be perceived as a current state of unpreparedness. This can embolden potential adversaries who might see this as a window of opportunity.
Undermining Confidence: Such statements can undermine public confidence in the military's current capabilities. Citizens need to trust that their country is always ready to defend them, not in three years, but now.
Diplomatic Ramifications: These declarations can strain diplomatic relations. Allies may question the UK's ability to contribute effectively to joint defence initiatives, while adversaries might see it as an invitation to test our defences.
Internal Morale: Within the military, such statements can affect morale. Soldiers, sailors, and airmen need to feel confident in their leadership and their mission. Publicly questioning their current state of readiness can be demoralising.
Military strategy and readiness are matters of national security that require a degree of secrecy and discretion. While transparency with the public is important, certain aspects of defence should be kept under wraps to avoid giving away critical information. Here are a few reasons why discretion is key:
Operational Security: Keeping strategic plans confidential ensures that potential adversaries are not aware of our capabilities and plans, which is crucial for maintaining a tactical advantage.
Strategic Ambiguity: This is a deliberate policy of being vague about a country's intentions or capabilities, thereby deterring adversaries through uncertainty. It can prevent enemies from making calculated moves against perceived weaknesses.
National Confidence: Ensuring that the public feels secure in their nation's defence capabilities fosters a sense of national pride and unity. Confidence in the military translates to broader societal stability.
As the UK navigates the complex landscape of modern warfare, it is essential for military leaders to strike a balance between preparedness and prudence in their communications. Instead of public announcements that might be misconstrued or misused, internal assessments and strategic planning should guide our path forward.
The British Army, and indeed all branches of the armed forces, must focus on continuous improvement and readiness without the need for dramatic public declarations. By doing so, we can maintain a position of strength and respect on the global stage, ensuring that our adversaries think twice before challenging us.
While the call for enhanced military readiness is valid, the manner in which it is communicated should be carefully considered. Let us strive to be a nation that is always ready, without needing to broadcast our timelines and vulnerabilities to the world. Next time, let’s keep our strategic plans firmly under wraps, securing our place as a formidable and respected global power.

Biden's Air Defense Promise to Ukraine: A Critical Turning Point in NATO's Development
During the NATO summit, Biden pledged to provide Ukraine with cutting-edge air defense systems, highlighting the alliance's strength and cohesion against Russian aggression.
In the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, US President Joe Biden's recent pledge to provide Ukraine with five new strategic air defense systems is a turning point that represents changes to NATO's composition and strategic aims. NATO leaders are about to make fresh promises in Washington, DC, where President Joe Biden emphasized in a strong address that the commitment had only been lessened because of increased tension and an increasing number of civilian losses. It addresses the strategic significance of the weapon systems, the announcement's numerous repercussions, and the broader geopolitical context.
Biden's Strategic Position
The alliance's involvement in the war is said to have escalated to a new level when Biden declared his support for Ukraine during a NATO conference. Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Romania are among the US allies that are anticipated to supply Kyiv with Patriot missile batteries to counter other air defense systems. This action is a direct reaction to the Russians' ceaseless strikes, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties, notably the most recent missile attack on Kyiv Children's Hospital, which left 43 people dead and hundreds more injured.
The Patriot missile is a well-defended missile battery against ballistic missiles; these cutting-edge defensive weapons will not be supplied as a symbolic boost to Ukraine's defense.
The Economist's military editor, Shashank Joshi, claims that Ukraine would require a combination of these technologies to provide both economic viability and complete defense against external threats.
NATO's Changing Position
In fact, Biden's remarks highlighted how NATO is changing and now has more fangs than it has ever had. This is happening at a time when Finland and Sweden have just joined the alliance in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This is outlined in the reformation of NATO's ideology as well as in cooperation in the face of Russian aggression.
In addition to the historic character of the summit—which took place in the same room as the original NATO treatyBiden's address had a symbolic element. In light of this, the fact that Biden presented NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the Presidential Medal of Freedom demonstrated the alliance's ongoing significance and his unwavering loyalty to his leadership.

The timing of the decision to bolster Ukraine's air defenses could not have been more crucial given President Volodymyr Zelensky's demands for greater Western assistance during the war. As it has always been, even covertly, Biden's pledge sends a very clear message to Russia that the United States and its allies will not stand by.

Fifteen Years of Hungary and NATO
What does an overwhelming majority look like? Can you imagine a cause that wins more than 85 percent support? That was the size of the majority that voted yes on Hungary joining NATO in the 1997 referendum. Along with Poland and the Czech Republic, Hungary joined the alliance March 12, 1999, despite opposition from Moscow to the enlargement and some concern within the organization itself.
This year, we celebrate the 15th anniversary of accession, one of the great steps forward in the country’s process of reintegration with the West after liberation from Soviet Communist rule in 1989-1990. Soviet troops still occupied the country in July 1990 (they left only in 1991) when Géza Jeszenszky, then foreign minister of the first democratically elected government, visited NATO headquarters in Brussels. That was the first official contact between Hungary and the alliance.
Hungarian stamp commemorating Hungary's NATO accession
Last week, the Ministry of Defense of Georgia hosted a celebration commemorating that milestone for the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, bringing together diplomats from each country, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration.
At the time when our countries were joining, the former Yugoslavia was falling apart and the fighting threatened the stability of southeastern Europe. NATO’s presence was vital and Hungary played an important role in the peacekeeping process. Since then we have proven to be a reliable partner in many missions. Post-9/11, Hungary joined the mission to Afghanistan, and Prime Minister Orbán made a commitment to the U.S. and other NATO allies, promising that Hungary would go “in together, out together,” sticking with the mission until the very end.
Hungary is a proud member and grateful for that day 15 years ago.
