MBARI’s remotely operated vehicle Ventana completes 4,500 deep-sea dives

On October 10, 2023, MBARI’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Ventana completed a record of 4,500 dives for ocean exploration. It has logged more dives for science than any other submersible in the world. Image: Dave Caress © 2023 MBARI

If you're reading my Impel Down fic, and know me for 5 minutes, you know that I have an undying love of the (deep) sea. So, in preparation of especially part two of that fic, in which I go unnecessarily out of my way to integrate the deep sea trench in which the prison sits with the mood of the fic, have some homework!

This is an absolutely lovely documentary of the upper part of the deep sea, the twilight zone, where still some light reaches. It is where Benji will be trying to spot the Prince of the Deep, a Loch Ness Monster status Sea King supposedly inhabiting the dwindling light zones around the great prison.

They'll be going down much further in the fic (over 6 km down, into the hadal zone), but keep an eye on this series. They're going to release more parts, moving deeper and deeper into the ocean.

Movement Project- Mixed media modelling

I wasn’t able to get to the photography studio so I thought I’d try model the t-shirt I made in a funny way, by using a bit of photoshop and returning to my roots of digital art.

Making myself the scuba diver both modern and old designs! Along with adding a undersea background. I had fun experimenting with the colours, textures and overlays to create these.

I’m happy I could do my screen-printing design justice without being in a photography studio and also be able to have fun with recreating the feeling of familiarity and excitement I associate with the sea.

Aluminaut Design and Innovation

The Aluminaut represents a significant achievement in nautical history as the world's first aluminum deep ocean research submersible. Built with a 6.5 inch forged aluminum inner hull, Aluminaut was designed to dive depths of 15,000 feet while carrying a payload up to 6,000 pounds- far greater than any deep submersible of its day.

This is especially significant as the Aluminaut only weighs 80.9 tons, about half of the weight of traditional steel models.

Originally imagined in 1942 by J. Louis Reynolds of the Reynolds Metals Company, the Aluminaut came to fruition in 1964, after many years of innovative development and fabrication. The driving idea behind the submarine was to showcase the strength and capability of aluminum and its value in benefiting science through undersea exploration. By building a successful submersible vehicle capable of exploring the deep ocean, Reynolds Metals hoped to contribute to national security, locate new sources of minerals and food, and foster scientific understanding.

Aluminaut made 251 dives working with scientific organizations, government bureaus, and industrial clients. During its career,

Aluminaut set a world record for deepest dive by a submarine, took scientists below the ocean surface to carry out experiments, repaired underwater cables and equipment, discovered mineral deposits on the ocean floor, and even searched for sunken treasure.

Some of the Aluminaut's most famous missions include aiding in the recovery of a hydrogen bomb off the coast of Spain in 1966, rescuing the U.S. Navy's research submarine Alvin near Nantucket Island in 1968, and searching for the wreckage of the R.M.S. Titanic in its later years.

Also it looks cool as shit. Solidly built vibes at least. I’d feel better about getting in this antique for a cruise than that Titan carbon fiber thing - at least the Aluminaut has functional doors for fucks sake

Not quite harder than putting a man on the moon, but hard enough still.

...as in: Each single trip to the moon requires months — if not a whole year or more — of preparation. This rescue needs to be done within the next like 48 hour or so, or not at all.

My god—Oceangate, operator of missing submarine exploring the Titanic wreckage, had a viewport (window) certified only to 1300 meters, as whistleblower complained in a lawsuit, but was fired. So what’s the Titanic wreckage depth? ➡️4000 meters. 🔥

Update, June 23rd:  "Tail cone of Titan sub found" - US Coast Guard press conference - via BBC News live update web-page

June 24th: Canadian and US officials have indicated there will be investigations into the Titan deaths. Other government agencies are may join in, but it is unclear at this stage which agency will lead the investigation.

June 28th: Pieces of derbris confirmed to be former OceanGate Titan submersible recovered; suspected human remains among the wreckage. (the Guardian)

Exploration of Deep Waters of Glacier Bay National Park

May - September 2023, NOAA Ocean Exploration is conducting a series of expeditions to map and explore deep waters off Alaska. We're still waiting to get underway for our first expedition that will include remotely operated vehicle dives (deep an eye out for some (good) news about that)...while you wait, here's video from a 2016 expedition to explore waters within Glacier Bay National Park, to get you pumped and ready for what we might see (hopefully soon)!

Movement Project- Digital Stencil Making

After seeing one of my peers create their stencil using an IPad and digital art software, I wanted to have my own go at it. I found it much quicker to draw the stencil digitally and I could refine and simplify the design a lot easier.

When I finished the drawing, I printed the design and began the delicate process of cutting the stencil out. Making sure each piece connected and avoiding tears. I’m excited to print this design, based on old deep sea exploration scuba diving suits which I first saw depicted while watching SpongeBob SquarePants as a child.

The deep sea both fascinates and scares me and can’t wait to expand on these emotions further.
