Animal of the Day!
Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Greenland; Iceland; Northern North North America; Northern Asia
Size (Weight/Length)- 600 g; 35 cm; 60 cm wingspan
Diet- Leaves; Flowers; Berries; Seeds; Plant buds
Cool Facts- The rock ptarmigan is one of the only birds to have the ability to change color. These grouse are brown in summer and slowly switch to white over a period of several weeks once snow begins to fall. Instead of migrating south when temperatures drop, rock ptarmigan shelter down and brave the storm. Unable to store large amounts of fat like other overwintering birds, rock ptarmigan are forced to constantly eat to stay warm. Males sport bright red eye combs that are used to gain mates. The brighter the color, the healthier the rock ptarmigan, and the more likely he is to pass on his genes.
Rating- 11/10 (I still have no idea how to pronounce their name.)

Prompt - Cruel
@jegulus-microfic December 27 Word count 252
Regulus had always had a sharp tongue. James was used to it all the Marauders were. It rolled off them like water. But this. This was beyond anything he’d ever done. It was downright cruel of him.
“You don’t mean that, do you? James’s voice was hoarse. Regulus narrowed his eyes.
“I meant every single word of it, James.”
“Nope, you’re just annoyed with me, so you’re saying the cruelest things you can think of to try and hurt me. But I don’t believe you.” James told him, only mostly certain he was correct.
“Believe me when I tell you again that Remus Lupin looks better on a broom than you do.”
“But he can’t even fly, Regulus.” James was visibly upset. Regulus decided to take another bite.
“He is also the most attractive out of all of you. Smarter and has better hair.” That last jab was for his brother, who hadn’t actually done anything this time, but Regulus was having fun.
He held out his hand towards Remus, who immediately dropped his book and placed his hand into Regulus’s waiting one. Bringing them to his lips and placing a delicate kiss on Regulus’s knuckles.
With a victorious smirk, Regulus spun around and pulled Remus with him.
“Well, I know what I did to piss Reg off. But what did you do to Remus?” James questioned, still a little stunned.
“Oh, nothing. Remus just enjoys Reggie’s drama.” Sirius sighed fondly, watching his boyfriend and little brother walk away hand in hand.

Animal of the Day!
Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Northern Europe; Northern Asia; Greenland
Size (Weight/Length)- 9.5 kg; 68 cm
Diet- Small mammals; Bird eggs; Insects; Fruits; Reptiles
Cool Facts- The Arctic fox is right at home in their freezing homes. Their white fur helps them blend into the snow, letting them chase down prey as big as snowshoe hares. During the summer, their fur shifts to a dark brown thanks to seasonal camouflage. Their short ears and fur covered feet help them maintain body heat. Arctic foxes hunt almost exclusively during the spring and summer, when snow is off the ground. By hoarding snow geese eggs and small mammals in the permafrost, these foxes ensure they have plenty of food for the harsh months to follow.
Rating- 11/10 (Possibly the cutest sleeping position in the animal kingdom.)
