The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape, by Katie Holten. This is less a book you read and more a collection of essays that you pick up from time to time. They're interesting, but it's hard to really get into.

Dune: Prophecy (Season 1, Max) - I both really like and really dislike this show. I like that it's making me think a little, and I dislike that the only person I'm discussing this with at the moment is my boss, who is a huge Dune fan.

Babylon Berlin (Season 4, Hoopla) - I really missed my sad pathetic wet interwar German detective Gereon Rath and I'm really glad I found the last season on Hoopla.

As you can see from my personal blurb above, I'm a pretty mixed and positively chaotic person, and my spiritual practice is no different. Peppermint Purple: Map of Ireland and Derwentwater Designs: Poppyfield Lane stitched by Deb Draeger. 

This is a mash-up of a couple of designs to create an 11" x 14" Ireland travel poster. On the top half is the Peppermint Purple Ireland blackwork map to which I'm adding the names of sites we visited on our 2017 trip. I've pinpointed them on the map with gold beads. The bottom half is a cross-stitched scene of a village that reminds me of many we passed through.

This exchange was inspired by my twitter feed fascination with KT's tattoo, and it makes me giggle every time I remember it. From DEBS AU:

It was their third day together and honestly, Lena always forgets about them, so when in the midst of passion, Kara let out a giggle behind her, Lena furrowed her brows.

“Nice to meet you, Purity.” Lena stilled, and had to fight against the fog in her brain to figure out what the hell did that mean. When she did, she groaned and buried her face on the pillow right in front of her. 

“Could you please continue with what you were doing and forget about that?”

“As you wish…”

🎢 Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

I think my Supercorptober fic. Mostly because I didn't INTEND on writing anything for supercorptober, but I was in the middle of the MOTHER of writers block, and i tried to use it as a thing to make me write. I started it I think on third day of the month, so I was already late and couldn't see where i was even going, but I managed (i think) to find a coherent story at the end of it.

😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?

I mean, not intentionally, but I think that leaving a chapter in a BIG cliffhanger for six months kinda counts? 😬

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

I consider myself a fluff writer, I don't really do angst, or crack very well. I do often call Kara "KD", which is a nod to Stay The Night, my beloved. I always keep Lena being younger than Kara, and Andrea is often Lena's ex. I headcanon that Lena as a genius skipped grades and graduated early, and that Mount Helena's is in Ireland, so that bleeds into my writing. Also, unless I have too acknowledge Newfoundland, she's also Irish. Alex and Sam had a friends with benefits relationship, before they met their respective SOs.

🎯 Have any of your readers accurately guessed major plot points? Care to share which?

I'm not sure? It's possible. I don't think my plot twists are a secret, I think I telegraph them a lot.

💖 What made you start writing?

Supercorp. As simple as that. I remember when I was a teenager i did write a bit of my then fandom (that shall not be named now because fvck that author) But supercorp grabbed me by the throat and made me want to write on a language that i've always felt insecure about. The first idea I had I never got past a few lines, but then I saw that there "wasn't" a DEBS AU, and that was inconceivable to me. I decided to do it myself. I found out when I was writing the penultimate chapter, that there was indeed a DEBS AU, but it wasn't finished.

🎃 Do you write fics for certain holidays? Which is your favorite holiday inspired fic?

Not by choice? Like there was a Halloween prompt in Supercorptober, so I wrote that. But there is a Christmas WIP somewhere... on my folder, because you don't choose your inspiration, the inspiration choses you, or whatever

Quantitatively, Kudos. But I find it so heartwarming when people contacts me via social media and tells me they liked X fic of mine. And if they give me bullet points... bless their hearts 💜

Impressions and musings about Limb&Cordingley book, part two.

I can't help myself but think Sue Limb did not actually have a heart to this job. I mean, the part about Laurie's stint in the army, from Ireland to Mhow, undoubtedly researched mostly by Cordingley (the constant swervings into the history of British military are here the dead giveaway) are much richer in details and info that the part about Laurie's childhood and teenage years. And Limb had a direct access to Violet, Laurie's own sister! Why didn't she grill her about, well, everything Laurie, about her most distinct memories of him, his favourite plays, funny anecdotes from their childhood, the habits in the household, the relations between Laurie and his family, the servants, like everyone in the house. His favourite spot in Gestingthorpe (okay, apart from the stables), favourite pasttime, favourite dish, his quirks, habits, everything. Those might look like some silly details, not very important, but seeing things like that helps the reader (and the writer) to flesh their hero out, to see living, breathing human being behind that famous name (and in this particular case behind this famous sentence I am starting to actually hate).

I swear I got more info about Robert Scott's childhood and family relations from his bios and none of these authors had access to Scott's siblings. In comparison to Scott's bios this part of Limb&Cordingley book seems just... empty and full of generalities. Either Mrs Limb didn't bother to note a lot of things or did not care to ask about them, I just can imagine that young woman listening to musings of an old lady and trying not to look bored, because Deb asked her to and who wants to disssapoint Deb? It would be like kicking a puppy, no decent human being does it.

Another problem I have is figuring out Laurie's relation with mother. Her presence hovers over him all the time, all right, but this relation seems to be somehow... incomplete, either because the lack of quite important info, or due to some other reason. It's like Caroline is a shadow over him, visible, but not really present, if you get what I mean. There are gifts, there are letters, there is the short financial leash she kept him on, but there isn't much more of her presence i his life. And there is saddling Laurie, a sixteen years old boy, mourning his own father and dealing with his educational problems. with managing Caroline's feelings while she grieved. That is so wrong, on so many levels, that I can't even. I tried to cut this woman some slack soooo hard, after all she is Lawrence's mother, but this was the moment I started to dislike her quite vigorously.

It’s always a good time, never forget my debs (lol if u know from normal people) me and my date snook a bottle of vodka on the bus to the venue with no mixer… didn’t even make it to 10 pm. 200€ taxi home 😭 oh ireland I love you. Like that’s what I consider a heavy night like if we equal out to a bottle each (which I do do at dinners and even at parties at my house like I count the bottles and often it’s about that) or like a cocktail/whiskey and two glasses of wine or so lol I’m like “I went heavy” (I also acknowledge I went heavier in the pandemic but again that was bad looool).

at 16/17/18 I was drinking like spirit coolers and cider mate like the Irish are truly built different and as I said I’m coming and I’ll crawl down to town with you dudes but I need to see this for myself 😂

14. Favorite book you read this year?

I'll be real with you... I don't think I have read anything this year that was not related to my studies. Kaptajnen og Ann Barbara is literally the only fiction I have read and it was for my bachelor thesis on the film Bastarden (int title: The Promised Land) which is inspired by the book anddddd... I did not enjoy that book.

I have bought many books that I (hopefully) will have the time/mental energy for to read next year, though! I bought The Picture of Dorian Grey and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde after watching an interview where Stephen Fry mentioned that those are the books he wishes he could erase from his mind and read anew. And I bought Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea because it's a thin book that, in theory, lines up with what I find fascinating in fiction.

(I really, really am not much of a reader though and I find most of it a war with my undiagnosed ADHD, but sometimes books just hit you and I am just waiting for a book that I love nearly as much as The Plague by Camus. That is my favourite book of all time and it is one of the few times where I really felt the joy of reading and not the suffering of reading.)

22. Favorite place you visited this year?

Oof, it is difficult to pick just one, so here are my two picks: Killiney Bay, Ireland and Shetland

I had been to Dublin multiple times already and I thought I had crossed off most things from my U2 bucketlist - I had seen Mount Temple, Bono's childhood home, their old studios and multiple spots around town where they have performed and/or had photoshoots. So I figured I'd be good, right? Then I visited lovely Deb earlier this year, who at the time lived sort of in the nook where it would be easy to go to Killiney from. I never saw the appeal of going to Killiney like other U2 fans did. I always thought it was a bit odd to go to Bono's current place of residence and take photos. But when I went there it was quiet, the sun was shining, everything looked so quiet... and I just cried. It made me feel really connected to my younger self who was so much into U2 and who needed them at a time of figuring out myself and all of those memories just came back. I do not really listen a lot to them anymore, but something on that journey just reminded me of their status and importance in my life. I never knew that standing just below Bono's house on this pebble beach would feel like such a comforting blanket, but for that moment I felt connected to them again. I took a pebble with me from that beach as a reminder. <3

- The Shetland trip is moreso purely based on the physical look of the landscapes. I don't know why, but I feel like the desire to go to remote places is in my DNA. It was the closure of a really lovely trip, that originally started as a quest to see Russell and his band in Inverness. We started in Edinburgh, met up with Linnie (mystery-star on here!) and then traveled north where we met Broo (losthavenmine). It was lovely to meet up with them and to share these precious memories of meeting Russell and experiencing this new place together. <3 Then my best friend, who had joined on this trip, and I went to Aberdeen to take the ferry to the Shetland Islands - a group of islands we had passed a couple years earlier when we took the ferry to the Faroe Islands and then sparked our curiosity. The pitstop at the Orkneys was nice, but the Shetlands were the real deal... Gosh. I love rough, empty landscapes like this. I would honestly like to live in a place as rough as these places are, though not in the current stage of my life. (We also, somehow, befriended a Danish couple who were also there in world's tiniest bus for public transport (a Mercedes Vito) and then got really really seasick together on the ferry from Lerwick to Kirkwall <3)

23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?

Go to the hospital, don't worry about your thesis but DO worry about how bad your dutch grammar has gotten, you will be fine re: applying to danish unis, you can get a cute haircut for bruce but it'll rain when you touch his hand so you'll look like a drowned rat anyway, enjoy the times together with your friends.

Biig Piig - Bubblegum

a fresh release by Ireland's own, Biig Piig's Bubblegum is packed with fun, almost futuristic dance pop. the soft vocals over what are consistently great dance beats makes this album an incredibly fun and high-energy listen! singing in both english and spanish, it's something quite fun, with a load of songs that were just MADE for radio - they're great! my favourites are:

Kerosene

the first single off the play, Kerosene hops between moments of subdued but swelling beats under vocals and more energetic, bouncy instrumental breaks. it's a super easy song to get into, and i could definitely see it being played in clubs! a great dance track by all means, and a really good indicator for the vibe of the album as a whole.

Picking Up (feat. Deb Never)

one of the more serious songs on the album, Picking Up conveys experiences of struggles, and getting caught in a cycle of using drugs to cope. despite the darker tone of the lyrics, the song itself is incredibly energetic, with very fast-paced breakbeat-y segments and a general high-octane feel throughout. the contrast could come off as jarring in theory, but it's super well executed here!

i think what Biig Piig has here is a really fun dance album, with a number of undeniably great songs. if you're into fast-paced dance music, then this is definitely the album for you! i have a feeling a few of these songs might sneak their way on to one or two of my own playlists, who knows?
