deanna and data criminally underrated dynamic. woman who feels everyone else's emotions acutely and man who doesn't even think he feels his own. sometimes they meet for 9pm milkshakes and have a conversation so effortlessly profound it makes the ensigns at the next table over rethink their whole lives. then 5 minutes later deanna's teaching data the finer points of how to giggle

Lolol I immediately thought of this so here is a drabble:

"Mother, what are you doing with him?" Deanna whispered frantically as soon as Garak left the room to get the next dress. "I can feel...it from the door."

Lwaxana was ordering 6 gowns and doing a runway show/fitting in Garak's shop as one does. Deanna had met liars before. Spies a plenty while onboard the Enterprise. But something about the Cardassian was simply... uncomfortable.

Garak, the shop owner, was not outright lying most of the time, technically, but everything was filtered. Layered. He also had some sort of psionic training that bounced a feeling around. It was like a game whatever he was doing. Because just before she could name the emotion or even begin to recognize it, the feeling would be spiked right out of bounds. Like everything in this shop, every word out of his mouth was fabricated and tailored just right.

It made Deanna fidget.

Finally after an uncomfortable hour, Lwaxana stepped out in the last dress. It was a huge gown. Almost something Deanna could have worn in one of the holodeck plays. What made it not completely human 18th century was the gaudy corset showcasing her assets.

Deanna hated to admit it, but it was a lovely dress. She doesn't say any of this though because for all of the excellent tailoring and design the dress was the most hideous shade of green ever. Deanna didn't know a shade like that could even exist, her eyes hurt from staring too long.

"Another masterpiece, Mr. Garak." Lwaxana said as she swished this way and that on the small platform before gliding around the room.

"Uh...Mother are you sure about this one?"

Lwaxana mentally chastised Deanna who resisted rolling her eyes. She'd told her mother a thousand times that telepathic speech when in the presence of a monopathic was unkind. And she reminded her for the 1,001 time now.

"Oh Deanna," Lwaxana said with a shake of her beehive-updo'd head. "Nevermind her, Mr. Garak, what do you think?"

Garak stepped back for a moment to take it all in. His blue eyes were intense.

"You look lovely, my dear. You'll turn heads wherever you go just as you deserve." Garak said with a smile.

Deanna blinked in surprise and her brow furrowed. Of course, Lwaxana just winked and clapped her hands with glee.

"Wonderful! Thank you, Mr. Garak, I'll wear this one out today if that's alright. The rest--."

"I'll have delivered to your quarters."

"Excellent, excellent."

Garak gave a short nod. Then as soon as he was in the backroom and hopefully out of ear shot, Lwaxana turned to Deanna with a knowing smile.

"See, he doesn't lie about the important things."

"Oh, Mother."

So betazoids can tell when people are lying. A betazoid enters Garak's shop, Garak says "hello" and the betazoid goes "absolute fucking not" and leaves immediately.
