Exploring the Tragedy of Unheard Records
In the digital streaming age where we all have instant access to an unparalleled variety of music — at least for now, it may seem paradoxical to consider the existence of unheard records. With thousands of records released every year and thousands of songs uploaded to streaming services every week, the sheer amount of available music is overwhelming. The vastness of the musical releases, coupled…

2016 VoicePlay summer fun — campers, cruises, costumes, charity, and… cops?
The excitement of the spring months rolled right into the summer. After he'd had a few weeks of concentrated new-dad time, the other guys gathered up Layne and headed to Ohio.
They first returned to Port Clinton for a show at the Lakeside Chautauqua Auditorium, and spent the night at a vintage (possibly haunted) hotel. From there, they scooted down to Dayton to be the featured artists at Camp A Cappella.
Tumblr media
.
Ahoy, mateys
A week later, while the others took care of things at home, Geoff and Earl teamed up with three of their buddies from Echo — Erik Winger, Antonio Fernandez, and Deejay Young — for a quick cruise on the Royal Caribbean Allure to the Virgin Islands. During their time at sea, they crossed paths with Us the Duo, who had just finished opening for the North American and European legs of Pentatonix's world tour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
No rest for the ambitious
They arrived home to an exciting milestone: 100K likes on Facebook! In the meantime, Eli did some session recording work, while Layne and Tony prepped for their next PattyCake video, and Layne worked on an additional side project. (Paternity leave was supposed to be less busy, dude!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Runnin', runnin'
Once the guys were all together again, they got into production on projects for both PattyCake and VoicePlay for most of August. In between location shoots for "Will.of.Oz", they reunited with Emoni Wilkins to film their video for "I Love Me".

.
Cruisin'
At the end of the month, the guys grabbed Winger again, and boarded the Royal Caribbean Oasis for yet another voyage. Since they set sail on Geoff's birthday, they had a toast on board.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Almost as soon as they got home, they traded one guest for another, snagging Antonio for the middle leg of an eastbound Panama Canal trip on the Disney Wonder. (Though it seems that they were possibly getting weary from so much travel.) They also seem to have run afoul of the Mexican police on their way home, but I'm pretty sure the getting arrested part was just a joke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Hop, skip, and a jump
After a few days of rest, they embarked on a series of quick trips. First they flew up to New Hampshire for the UNH A Cappella Fest. Next came a show in Iowa, and then a charity fundraiser in Chicago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
All about those babes
During their next stint at home, they made time for a little hanging without working. Most of the guys let someone else do the singing for once when they attended a local Meghan Trainor concert. The group included Layne, Cyndi, and their older girls; Cyndi's sister Steph and her elder daughter; Earl and Nick; and Tony.
Meanwhile, Eli spent some time with his own family to celebrate his sister's birthday, and Geoff got his domesticity on at home with Kathy.
.
Back to woOOOork
As summer wound down, VoicePlay prepared for their favorite time of year by finally filming a music video for their arrangement of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" off of their 2012 album "Once Upon an Ever After".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
All eh-board
They closed out September with a cruise on the Disney Magic from Nova Scotia to NYC and back. Since Tony and Layne were deep in production for their next PattyCake project (and Layne understandably wanted some more time at home with the baby), the rest of the guys called on both Winger and Antonio to fill in again.

Funk. It’s not just the notes and it’s not just the rhythm. It’s the feeling. When you’re listening to a band or a song, you shouldn’t have to do too much thinking to tell if it’s got the funk. You’ll feel it. And if it’s got the funk, ipso facto, it is funky.
Funk bands and funky music have recently, I’m pleased to report, experienced a bit of a resurgence – that is if one is to believe the august New York Times, who on November 3rd ran a lengthy article in it’s Sunday Review section entitled, “The Glorious Return Of Funk.” Oddly, at least on the surface, the article’s author, professor and musicologist Nate Sloan, cited as his first example the song ‘Sucker,’ a current Top 40 hit by the decidedly un-funky Wyckoff, NJ trio (and all-time favorite of my daughter, Mary), the Jonas Brothers. But sure enough, precisely 1:55 into the tune and for the succeeding 14 seconds, comes the moment Sloan described as a “stupefyingly funky drum break.” I’ll be damned if I didn’t feel it. With reflections of academia, Sloan went on to explain funk’s elusive heart is in its syncopation. “(It’s) The art of placing rhythmic accents in unexpected places,” he expounds. “The cognitive dissonance created every time a drummer, a guitarist or a group of horns strikes a note on the offbeat has a way of generating a propulsive power that can’t be denied.”
Current renaissance notwithstanding, what can similarly not be denied is that such funky syncopated power was at its peak in the groovy era of the 1970’s. Earth, Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers, Sly and the Family Stone, Kool & The Gang, The Gap Band, The Brothers Johnson, The Commodores, The Meters (later The Funky Meters), and certainly Parliament-Funkadelic, were just some of the roster of gigantic ‘70’s bands delivering the almighty funk.
Invoking the unlikely pairing of Descartes and the aforementioned Parliament, professor Sloan further attempted to ascribe scholarly meaning to the subject with the moving, sensory description, “The olfactory nature of the name ‘funk’ suggests the music was all about sweat and sociality. And it is. But it’s also something greater. Funk insisted that physical release begets mental salvation and vice versa, a collapsing of Cartesian mind-body duality summed up succinctly in the title of a 1970 Funkadelic album: “Free Your Mind … and Your Ass Will Follow.””
That’s heady stuff (and, I suppose, booty stuff). More directly, James Jamerson, acknowledged recently as the “most influential bass player ever” by Bass Player magazine, was known to have said, “The funk is in the funk.”
Personally, I just know it when I hear (and feel) it. And probably no band (outside of James Brown and The Famous Flames) put that feeling across quite like The Ohio Players. Originally formed in Dayton, Ohio in 1959, The Ohio Players reached their zenith in the ‘70’s with gloriously funkified hits such as ‘Love Rollercoaster,’ ‘Skin Tight,’ ‘Funky Worm,’ ‘Jive Turkey,’ and, undoubtedly their greatest ever, our featured song, ‘Fire.’ The video clip, taken from a 1975 live performance on the beloved late-night musical variety series, The Midnight Special, is over nine minutes long, but well worth the time.
Right from the marvelously incongruous introduction by funk-less ‘I Am Woman’ Aussie, Helen Reddy, the Ohio Players launch into an elongated funk-fest that would almost seem to be parody – or an outtake from the Will Farrell flick, “Semi-Pro” – if not for the fact that it’s so damn awesome. There’s a lot to follow here: smoke, bubbles, sirens, afros, denim ‘n diamond-bedazzled outfits, flame-licking graphics, runway strutting, O-H-I-O chanting, the sudden appearance (then re-appearance) by a crew of pop-and-lock dancers, all happening while the band keeps churning away at its mighty funky business. But I do especially hope you’ll stick around until the end when (beginning at 8:24) double-neck guitarist Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner – that’s right, “Sugarfoot” – does a mind-blowing, pretty much indescribable scat/guitar finale that in retrospect seems like the only possible way to bring the entire eccentric exercise to a conclusion.
Of its madcap mayhem, a YouTube commenter astutely wrote, “Caution: this is straight funk, please warm up with lesser funk before watching. Side effects may include uncontrollable urge to get down, get it on, or get on wit’ yo bad self, randomly begin shouting and whooping, and possibly, in severe cases, set fire to your house in honor of the funk.” To that, stretching back from the Ohio Players on up to the Jonas Brothers, all I can think to say is “Funk yeah.”

Mr. Gnome presents: Not This Time, Devil
Devil go home !
Tumblr media
Pushing the limits of sonic exploration, Cleveland art-rock duo, Mr. Gnome, create a living, breathing realm of psychedelic orchestration on their eagerly anticipated LP, A Sliver of Space, set to be released this Friday, September 27th on El Marko Records.
The singles leading up to release have showed the band's shapeshifting prowess across different moods and genres. From the monstrous-sounding "Fader," to the hypnotic gaze of "Nothing and Everything," to the calming and celestial "Mind's Gone," Nicole Barille and Sam Meister continue to create unique worlds that play a larger role in the universe of A Sliver of Space.
youtube
Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Interpol, Tennis, Temples, Panic at the Disco, Parquet Courts, Ra Ra Riot), A Sliver of Space explodes with hypnotic, gritty rock anthems that suddenly give way to long-form, drug-fueled journeys that transport the listener on a surreal trip from start to finish.

Mr. Gnome Unleashes Psychedelic Masterpiece 'A Sliver of Space' with Ferocious New Single 'Fader'
Tumblr media
Pushing the boundaries of sonic exploration, Cleveland art-rock duo Mr. Gnome crafts a vibrant, ever-changing realm of psychedelic orchestration on their eagerly anticipated LP, *A Sliver of Space*, slated for release on September 27th via El Marko Records. Following the release of their first single, "Nothing and Everything," Mr. Gnome unveils the new single "Fader" —a colossal track that tears through its seven-minute runtime with relentless ferocity and a full-on sonic assault. Check out "Fader" on YouTube, and see below for the most up-to-date list of North American fall tour dates. Pre-order the vinyl and CD, and find it on Bandcamp. "We had just finished mixing our album and were about to send it off for mastering when this song crept into our brains. We fell in love with the heavy, gritty vibe and the contrasting gooey vocals, and kept pushing this song as far as we could take it," they explain. "Our brother and longtime collaborator/touring guitarist/bassist, Jonah Meister, added lead guitars that dance around the vocals, including a breakneck improvised solo. Combining our love of The Stooges, Black Sabbath, Joy Division, and 90s shoegaze, we had a ton of fun writing this one." Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Interpol, Tennis, Temples, Panic! At The Disco, Parquet Courts, Ra Ra Riot), *A Sliver of Space* bursts with hypnotic, gritty rock anthems that suddenly give way to long-form, drug-fueled journeys, transporting the listener on a surreal trip from start to finish. Mr. Gnome continues to defy simple genre classification, creating a dense tapestry of textures, aural fabrics, and influences that coalesce into a unique, defining sound. Throughout its relatively compact runtime, electronica, desert rock, punk, indie rock, and lush soundscapes swirl and converge, all woven with the continuous thread of lead singer/guitarist Nicole Barille’s golden harmonies. "When we started writing *A Sliver of Space*," they recount, "we were working through a lot of personal loss and life upheaval. Lyrically and musically, nothing was off limits, and we dove headfirst into exploring the liminal, dreamlike spaces between life and death, consciousness and unconsciousness, the past and the future, happiness and sadness, the real and the make-believe. This album is essentially about our descent into madness and our ultimate salvation through love." Since 2005, Barille and drummer/pianist Sam Meister have been crafting a vision of expansive, technicolor art-rock, receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone (named "Band To Watch" in a spotlight review), Pitchfork, NPR, Paste, Esquire, Spin, Magnet, MTV, KEXP, and American Songwriter, among others. Beyond their fully realized sonic presentation, Mr. Gnome has a rich history of producing head-turning DIY visuals, including otherworldly album covers, artistic press photography, and mind-bending short films. Don't miss out on experiencing Mr. Gnome’s extraordinary musical journey and visual artistry as they tour this fall below and their video for “Fader”: Mr. Gnome - Fall 2024 Tour Dates 08/24 • Lexington, KY • Expansion Music Fest • The Burl 09/27 • Wheeling, WV • Waterfront Hall 09/28 • Frostburg, MD • The Deep End 10/01 • Washington, D.C. • Pie Shop 10/02 • Asheville, NC • Sly Grog Lounge 10/03 • Atlanta, GA • Smith's Olde Bar (Atlanta Room) 10/04 • Pensacola, FL • The Handlebar 10/05 • Adams, TN • Spoopy Festival 10/08 • St. Louis, MO • The Platypus 10/09 • Grand Rapids, MI • Pyramid Scheme 10/10 • Madison, WI • Gamma Ray Bar 10/11 • Columbus, OH • Ace of Cups 10/12 • Dayton, OH • Dayton 20th Music Fest - Blind Bob’s 10/14 • Kansas City, MO • Sister Anne’s Records and Coffee 10/15 • Denver, CO • Lost Lake 10/16 • Salt Lake City, UT • The DLC 10/17 • Boise, ID • Shrine Social Club (Basement) 10/18 • Portland, OR • Star Theater 10/19 • Seattle, WA • Sunset Tavern 10/22 • San Francisco, CA • Bottom of the Hill 10/23 • Los Angeles, CA • Permanent Records Roadhouse 10/25 • Tucson, AZ • 191 Toole 10/26 • Albuquerque, NM • TBA 10/28 • Dallas, TX • TBA 10/29 • Austin, TX • Hotel Vegas 11/01 • Chicago, IL • Beat Kitchen 11/02 • Cleveland, OH • Beachland Ballroom Read the full article

V4VELINDRE IS OUT AND THE REVIEWS ARE IN!
Tumblr media
V4Velindre was released on the 1st of October to rave reviews and excellent sales, with the album raising £1,147 for Velindre Cancer Centre on its very first day. A large part of the album’s success must surely be down to the support of music critics, national and local radio stations all across the UK, and even into Europe, North America and South Africa. You can add to that sum by downloading the album from  https://v4velindre.bandcamp.com/releases
Here are some of the albums key supporters -
John Harris
John Rhys Harris (born 1969) is a British journalist, writer and critic. He is the author of The Last Party: Britpop, Blair and the Demise of English Rock (2003); So Now Who Do We Vote For?, which examined the 2005 UK general election; a 2006 behind-the-scenes look at the production of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon; and Hail! Hail! Rock'n'Roll (2009). His articles have appeared in Select, Q, Mojo, Shindig!, Rolling Stone, Classic Rock, The Independent, the New Statesman, The Times and The Guardian.
John was been incredibly engaged with V4Velindre, calling it a ’brilliant and lovingly compiled album’ and then consistently tweeting and retweeting on its behalf. He has also secured an article on the album in a forthcoming issue of https://thenewcue.substack.com/about.
Adam Walton https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0079gnt
The Adam Walton Show is broadcast on Saturday nights, and you can hear the likes of Sun Ra, Fairport Convention, Big Black, War and Westlife, all rubbing shoulders with the finest new Welsh musical talent.
Adam's the resident DJ and occasional promoter at Telford's Warehouse in Chester and he enjoys computer programming when he's not mowing down legions of newbies during an online Quake III frag-fest.
Perhaps it is these 'geek-oid' tendencies that drew him inexorably to presenting Radio Wales' science and technology show Science Cafe.
Adam is the author of On Making Music, a guide for bands and artistes on how to make music and how get it out into the public domain, and also produces The Janice Long Show for BBC Radio Wales.
Adam was playing music from V4Velindre as early as the 18th of September and has continued to support the album on and off air. Last Saturday, he played three tracks and talked about the fundraising nature of the album. He has called V4Velindre ‘a great album’.
John Kennedy  https://www.radiox.co.uk/radio/shows-presenters/xposure/
John Kennedy is a British DJ and radio presenter and podcast host, best known for his longstanding role as the host of the music show X-Posure on Radio X and for the music podcast Tape Notes. X-Posure is currently broadcast on Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm to 2am. The show introduces music from up-and-coming artists primarily, although not exclusively, from alternative and indie styles, and regularly includes live sessions and interviews. Over the years the show has featured a huge range of artists and Kennedy has been credited with discovering countless musicians who have gone on to find success, including the likes of Adele, The xx, Razorlight, Kate Nash, The Ting Tings, The Futureheads, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip and Mumford & Sons. The Independent described the show as one of the "most eclectic...on British radio".
John has featured V4Velindre on his renowned show X-Posure on a number of occasions - last Saturday’s show featured a triple header of tracks and a lengthy chat about the fundraising aspect of the album - he even spelt out the name for those considering downloading it. There was a significant uptake on Sunday morning, which I 100% put down to John and Adam playing tracks the night before. John has called V4Velindre ‘an amazing overview of various musical styles’.
Dr Art Jipson
I was fortunate to be interviewed by Dr Jipson for the popular music course he teaches at the University of Dayton, Ohio, a couple of years back.  Although an Associate Professor in Sociology, Dr Jipson is also the host of the Tuesday Afternoon Alternative broadcasting at https://udayton.edu/studev/leadership/involvement/student-life/org-radio.php
It is a show which Dr J is proud to say concentrates largely on the local music scene in Dayton, but which also takes the occasional detour, in the name of authentic music, further afield. Dr J played a fistful of tracks from V4Velindre, as well as talking at length about the fundraising aspect of the album. He also generously penned the piece below for his blog
https://yourtuesdayafternoonalternative.com/2021/10/05/v4velindre-a-collection-with-heart-and-purpose/
Pete Paphides
Pete Paphides started his career in music journalism at Melody Maker before going on to write for Time Out, the Guardian, Mojo, Q, Observer Music Monthly and The Times, where he spent five years as their Chief Music Critic. He has made several music documentaries for BBC Radio 4, including ‘Lost Albums’, ‘Follow-Up Albums’ and the New York Radio Festival Gold Award-winning ‘The Songs of Molly Drake’. Over the years, he has been a regular contributor to BBC Four music documentaries and he also made two series of Vinyl Revival for BBC 6 Music. Since 2015, he has hosted a weekly music show for Soho Radio and in 2020, Quercus published his first book, a memoir about childhood and music entitled ‘Broken Greek’. The book has been warmly received and was featured as BBC Radio 4’s Book Of The Week in May. ‘Broken Greek’ has since been optioned by Andrew Eaton (The Crown, 24-Hour Party People) for a television series.
Pete has described the album as ‘A magnificent anthology’ and has tweeted and retweeted his opinion that people should buy it. The fact that I have been able lead tweets and press releases with quotes from Adam, John Harris, John Kennedy and Pete has made a massive difference as to how the album has been received.
There have been radio stations from all over playing the album. Starting locally: https://www.gtfm.co.uk/ interviewd me in the run up to the 1st of October and played songs on the day, while others to have played tracks are Montreal’s

Some of the corpses slowly die a second death, others still roam the halls but all have found their souls forever trapped inside these manor walls.
His tormenting supernatural experiments continue…

KEEP OUT
In the once booming Mining town of Modoc, there was a child, a disturbed child by the name of Georgie Porgie. Georgie was a pudgy little fellow, who couldn’t seem to keep his hands to himself. He scared the little girls in town and the neighborhood boys teased him…
“Georgie Porgie pudding and pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry. When the boys came out to play, Georgie Porgie ran away.”
Arrested to his home, his parents tried to ease his affliction with dolls for him to play with, but one night, he broke out in a fit of rage, then came across Clementine Callson. She, nor Georgie, were ever heard from again. Story goes that he lives deep in the mines where he first buried her.
Make sure you don’t cross his path or he might bury you too.

AS I DIE AT MY DESK
Interview by Shawn Gibson
Tumblr media
Can you tell me the meaning of the band name As I Die At My Desk? I imagine dying in a cubicle in corporate hell!
The honest answer to this is that it was a joke. I overheard a co worker say it at work and I thought it would be a hilarious band name. It is also a bit ironic as I always told myself that I would do work I truly love and follow my passions as they tell you that stuff in high school and college and it hasn't worked out that way for me yet! I am not deterred. I do get to make music in my spare time. Music gets to be my fun escape. It gets to be my artistic outlet that I don't have to share if I don't want to. All that aside I am a man who loves to laugh and loves to joke. Despite the themes and sounds of the music which are very real and emotionally heavy for me, the band name was a way to take the piss out of the situation. I can laugh at myself for being a weirdo who likes heavy music, where people scream and howl like demons and laugh even harder at how ridiculous I must look doing that in the bedroom for my music. I am pretty serious about most things, but I have to remember to have fun. That is what I think is important. I'm sorry it's not a very metal answer!
Suicide as Cleansing by As I Die at My Desk
You do everything in As I Die At My Desk, all instruments right?
Yes, I do all instruments and my main goal is to try to not suck. I actually record through a pre amp and I use different virtual amp sims like Amplitube for my tones. I used my Sterling by Music Man John Petrucci 7 string guitar, Ibanez BTB7 7 string bass, and an Alesis brand electric drum set for this record. It's a pretty basic setup, but given the size of my recording space, it's the best I can do. I have been writing for the past eight years or so. This is my first attempt at a metal release despite the fact I am a huge metal head! I was pretty happy with what I was able to do by myself.
What are your influences musically?
My influences range from classical music to jazz to anything under the rock umbrella. I am particularly interested in Soviet era composers. Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, and Igor Stravinsky. The first instrument I started playing was a cello at age 10. I graduated college in 2016 and gave a recital featuring Shostakovich and Prokofiev. The desperation and darkness they were able to convey so beautifully have influenced me greatly. I don't have a lot of experience with jazz, but the works of Coltrane, Thelonios Monk and especially Miles Davis have influenced me, as well. I just love especially experimental music and anything that ties to reshape and reform the genres wherein they find themselves pigeonholed. My music doesn't really sound like it to me, but Dream Theater and Iron Maiden are two of my favorites. I didn't actually start to get into doom or sludge until college. Now I love that stuff! Eyehategod is one of my newer favorite bands, as well as Sumac and YOB.
What are some of your favorite books and movies?
I tend to read non-fiction. I am a big history nerd. However I have spent a lot of time in the fiction world, as well. Some of my favorites are Catch 22 by Joseph Heller, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Twelve Chairs by Ilf and Petrov. I am a big Lynch and Tarantino fan! Blue Velvet and Eraserhead are two of my favorite films. Reservoir Dogs had a really big impact on me, as well. I first saw it when I was 14. It was so gritty and real to me then. That was a very realistic show of violence.
Are you a fan of horror books or movies?
I was a bigger fan of horror when I was in high school. I must have read every Stephen King a dozen times. I don't tend to like a lot of horror books or movies. There are some exceptions, I love monster movies. Give me Jaws or Godzilla any day! I tend to like movies that are creepy or unsettling, but I don't get into paranormal stuff. There are plenty of flesh and blood horrors in our world that are much more terrifying than ghosts.
You have some very heavy music with some very dark themes. What inspired 'Suicide As Cleansing' as your album title?
I am depressed and have anxiety. What more is there to say? To answer your question, though, the title popped into my head one day. I remember I was reading something on social media about mental health and the act of suicide. Someone described suicide as an act of cleansing. That idea stuck with me and I thought about it for quite some time. I decided to use that in an overall positive way. I thought that since I was channeling my negative and destructive feeling into my music, I was attempting to kill myself. Attempting to kill a bad part of myself that I don't want to have to deal with all the time and thus conducting a cleansing of sorts. I wanted that to be the album title because it reflected the whole reason I was making the record. It doesn't help to keep those feelings bottled up cause they fester. I urge anyone who has suicidal or self harming thoughts to seek help. Talk to people; they will listen. You may feel like it doesn't help, but it does. I struggle, but I feel better when I know I'm safe to talk about it. Here's why I give my wife a huge shout-out for being so supportive and understanding!
What was the inspiration for your songs on 'Suicide As Cleansing'?
The inspiration for this whole record was feeling trapped and depressed. Modern day life appears to be doing that for younger generations these days. Waking up one day and realizing careers that you were dead set on are no longer sustainable. Seeing all of the political strife becoming more prominent and ruining friendly and familial relationships. We live in a very depressing world. I don't need to get into all the issues facing us but there are many and enough that are potentially world ending are enough, to make anyone uneasy. In that way I feel that genuine themes of feeling trapped, powerless, isolated and really angry are appropriate.
I would say "No Pride" is one of my favorites. The gallop of the drums, the riff! I feel myself rocking and swaying. Definitely banging my head!
Thanks! It might be my favorite song on the album. It was actually fun to record that one and I did it in far fewer takes than the other ones.
"Trapped In The Bass-Ment" is hypnotizing! It's almost a chance to catch your breath from the other six songs that precede it!
I appreciate the comments! The whole track was written and recorded in one sitting. I am a big fan of drone and ambient music so it seemed fitting. I felt that even I needed a break after "No Pride." It just hit me really hard in conjunction with all the earlier tracks. I worried it might be boring for people, but I silenced that voice. I try to make music for myself, but I really appreciate it when people like my work!
"Annihilate Me" is the equivalent of the musical Dim Mak! Nine-minutes-and-fifty-eight seconds of destruction! Tell me about this song.
"Annihilate Me" was written over a span of about three days. I was in the middle of a very depressive episode and I remember sitting down with my guitar and playing the heaviest, angriest, gnarliest stuff I could get out of it. There was no preconceived plan as to lyrics or vocals. After I recorded the guitars and drums, I screamed anything that came to mind. It was a very cathartic episode and I view it as the perfect ending to an unpleasant journey.
Where did the artwork for 'Suicide As Cleansing' come from? What does it mean to you?
The cover art is a photograph taken from my lovely wife, who gets another shout-out. We were hiking at the Englewood Metropark and we noticed the tree almost all by itself. She took a bunch of photos of it because it was cool and interesting, also creepy. One thing I remember clearly, was the tree's base was covered with these beautiful yellow flowers. In a way I felt it represented the album. The tree itself was dead and bare. It was a little unsettling especially in the photos my wife took. The fact that life had sprung from this dead tree seemed to fit this theme of killing a part of yourself or perhaps a rebirth.
Calculating the Cost of Existence by As I Die at My Desk
Your second album 'Calculating The Cost of Existence' (2019) came out in December. What can you tell us about the new project?
I will say in terms of sound, the new record came out with a different sound. It's a doomy, sludgey mess for sure. There are more introspective parts included. The music is expressing a greater array of feelings than the first.
Another one-man effort?
Yes, I did all the instruments again. As long as I possess the tools to do it, it certainly makes it easier in the creative process not having to deal with other personalities or egos on something so deeply personal to me. Now with that said, I don't mind collaborating or anything in the future.
Is that strenuous at times doing everything in the band?
The worst part about recording is I am not the best musician. It is strenuous when I have to perform everything and I am not that great. (laughs) My skills on guitar and drums are intermediate at best. I have played bass longer so I am a much more confident bass player than I am anything else but that's not saying a lot. It also doesn't help that I don't like the sound of my voice. I fancy myself as a composer, not a performer.
As I Die At My Desk is from Dayton Ohio right?
Yes, the band is based out of Dayton, where I have lived for most of my life so far.
What are some bands from Ohio you love?
To be honest, I don't know a ton of bands from Ohio. I will say I am a fan of Mouth of the Architect and Others by No One out of Dayton, Cloudkicker out of Columbus. Oh I can't forget Skeletonwitch!
Have you been to Ohio Doomed and Stoned Fest?
This might be shocking but I have never heard of Ohio Doomed and Stoned Fest. So no I haven't been but I am certainly interested now!
Will As I Die At My Desk play live or tour down the road?
Well, As I Die At My Desk will probably remain a studio entity. As I said I wouldn't be opposed to any kind of collaboration or possible touring but I don't have any plans for that at the moment. Now for my pretentious answer. As an artist I do not want to feel confined to any one medium as it exists. As I Die At My Desk was born out of specific life circumstances. As long as these circumstances provide emotional weight and depth for me, this project will continue. Once that source dries up(if it ever really does) then I will move on to a new project. As it stands I have a few other projects that I am working on that I can't discuss much yet. Stay tuned!

WWE Monday Night Raw 8/5/19
We started the night with a tribute to those in El Paso and Dayton. They even gave a ten bell salute. It was good. Nice of them.
Then they showed the theme song, and Samoa Joe interrupted it. He hopped up on the announce desk and yelled at Michael Cole for accusing him of attacking Roman Reigns. Graves tried to defend Cole, which only made Joe more mad. He demanded that they show the footage. They did, and Joe said that since he was nowhere near the attack. Joe vowed to stay at the show until Reigns showed up, so he could get his apology.
As he was talking, Becky Lynch interrupted and walked down to the ring. Badass. I love her.
Grade: B-. I am almost positive that it wasn’t Joe who attacked Roman, so this is just sorta a red haring. But it could lead to a nice brawl and maybe even a good match if I may be so bold.
Then we had a tag match in the Women’s division. Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch vs. Natalya and Trish Stratus. I was shocked that they are actually having Stratus on TV. Charlotte vs. Stratus is one of the biggest matches that they have going for them, so I was surprised to see this tag match get booked. Nattie and Lynch started the match with some technical exchanges. The two exchangd some submissiions, and Lynch was bout to lock in the disarmer, but Charlotte tagged herself in. Charlotte essentially wrestled this match alone, she completely refused to tag Lynch in. Even when she actually did tag Lynch in, she nailed Lynch in the back of the head with a forearm and walked out on her. Nattie locked in the sharpshooter, and refused to break when Lynch made it to the ropes, causing a DQ.
After the match, Stratus tried to pull Nattie off of Lynch, so Nattie pushed her away.
Grade: C+. Fine match, basically continued to show how much hatred has festered between Nattie and Lynch. And it showed that Charlotte is a bad guy. Stratus didn’t actually wrestle, so that was good. Just a perfectly functional angle here.
Then we went into Andrade vs. Rey Mysterio, the never ending feud. The match stemmed from Andrade ripping Mysterio’s mask after their portion of the Gauntlet match last week. We started with a quick pace, getting into striking and flipping within the first minute. At one point early on, Andrade spilled to the outside, so Rey slid out onto him and gave him a sunset flip powerbomb into the barricade. The two put on a really nice, lucha libre style of match with lots of great flippy moves. Rey hit an awesome hurricanrana after Andrade popped him up at one point. Andrade also nailed a beautiful double stomp in the corner after the two battled on the top rope. Rey still fought back however, this time with a mexican destroyer for a near fall. Then he nailed Andrade with the 619, but Andrade got his knees up for the splash after Vega distracted Mysterio. In the finish, Andrade went for the mask once again, but when the ref pulled him off, Vega hung up Mysterio on the middle rope, allowing Andrade to hit the hammerlock DDT.
Grade: B+. Just a nice little spotfest here. Pretty fun, and open to have a rematch. Nice to see a pretty good match.
Then we saw went is going on with Maria Kanellis, at their OBGYN appointment. She told Mike to defend her and her championship, and he said he would. At the appointment, Mike told Maria to relax and hugged her. The doctor then counted a pinfall, so Kanellis won the championship. Mike ran out into the waiting room, where R-Truth was waiting, He threw a baby doll in the air, which Mike caught, and then rolled up Mike to win his title back.
Then we had an interview with Becky Lynch about her summerslam match. Lynch said that she doesn’t care if Nattie has hometown advantage. She will win, because she has changed the business. Nattie said that she hasn’t gotten enough opportunity, but Lynch said that she needed to take opportunities. She is what Nattie’s career needs. Then Nattie was interviewed, and she said that her armbar didn’t matter, because her arm will break before she taps. Then she said that she would end Becky’s career with the sharpshooter and win the championship. Nice, I like tough Nattie.
Then Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman came out. Heyman ran down Rollins for getting destroyed by Lesnar again and again. He said that he loses too much, and he isn’t the hero that he pretends to be. They showed the attack from last week, and Heyman talked about how even he couldn’t stop Lesnar’s vicious attack. He also said that Rollins was in the building, and he insulted him for being stupid and showing up to Raw. Rollin’s music hit, and he limped down to the ring with a hair in hand. When Rollins got into the ring, Lesnar went right for the ribs. Lesnar attacked him with the chair and threw him all over the ring. Lesnar nailed him with an F5 to leave him laying on the ground.
After a commercial break, Rollins got on the mic and talked about why this match was worth it. He said that he wanted to protect the Universal Championship, despite the fact that it gets him beaten up every week. He said that this was all he had, and he vowed to beat Lesnar. He also refused to get on the stretcher when they offered it.
Grade: C-. I am not as fond of this underdog story as I was of a confident Rollins going into Wrestlemania. He is badass when he is confident, and while he is a good underdog, Lesnar eats underdogs. We’ve seen this story before, and while I hope Rollins wins, it seems like he won’t. I’m just sick of Lesnar being in the title picture.
Backstage, Kurt Angle, who would be a special guest referee for McIntyre vs. Alexander, talking to the Street Profits. They wanted to party with him and drink some milk, which they almost did until Drew McIntyre came up and threatened him. If Angle didn’t call it down the middle, then he would crack his skull open. I don’t know why Kurt Angle is here.
Then we had a squash match with the Viking Raiders. They won with the viking experience.
Grade: B-. Inoffensive Squash.
Then we had Cedric Alexander vs. Drew McIntyre, with Kurt Angle as the guest referee. McIntyre ran down to the ring as Alexander entered, and he beat the crap out of him. As they fought on the outside, Alexander gave McIntyre a tornado DDT, and then the lights went out. The Fiend showed up once again, and used the mandible claw to put Angle right on the mat.
Grade: B-. Okay, I’m into this becoming Wyatt’s new thing. A modern legend slayer, but he is way creepier. I like that, he looks really strong so far.
Then we had the New Day’s Xavier Woods and Big E come out to the ring for a match with the OC. The match didn’t even really start when AJ just ran into the ring and attacked. There was a DQ, and the New Day were beaten down, but Ricochet ran down and came to their aid. He helped fight them off, and they turned this into a 6-man tag. Ricochet and Styles mixed it up a bit. Big E was tagged in to fight a bit against Luke Gallows, who came out in his old face paint, so that was cool. Styles and Big E actually had a really good exchange here, where Styles countered several of Big E’s power move. He eventually gave Woods the hot tag, who gave Styles an honor roll. That was when this broke down a bit into anarchy, as Ricochet gave Styles a dropkick through the bottom ropes and out to the outside, but Gallows caught him when he tried again, and he was sent flying into the barricade. Styles then took out Big E with a Phenomenal Forearm, while Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer for the win.
Grade: B. Pretty good stuff, interesting that the OC got the win over the Smackdown tag team champions, so maybe they will be the WWE Tag Team Champions soon. Other than that, just sorta a spot fest. Still pretty good though.
Then Samoa Joe came out, upon finding out that Roman Reigns was in the building. Reigns didn’t come out, so Joe sat in the right and waited. The crowd got bored waiting for Reigns and chanted CM Punk, so Joe walked out and met Reigns in the parking lot. As Joe walked out to confront him, a car smashed into Romans. Joe actually made sure that Reigns was okay after the car was hit, telling him to stay down and yelling for a medic. Triple H came out to make sure he was okay as well. Interesting, no confirmation of who it was. And Joe may turn face.
Then we had a fatal 4-way elimination match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. The Kabuki Warriors vs. Fire and Desire vs. Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss vs. The IIconics. This match feels like they were going to do it at summerslam, but then they just kept cutting the build until they didn’t have a build, so they just blew it off on TV. Also, Corey and Renee are really funny during this match because he keeps yelling at her whenever Mandy Rose was in the ring. The IIconics took everyone down and hit their signature poses, but then Rose ran in to fight them. Rose pinned Cay with a running knee very quick, guaranteeing new champions. Nikki Cross was in after the elimination, but she quickly tagged herself out to Asuka. Asuka intimidated Rose out of the ring to tag in Bliss, but Bliss quickly tagged Sonya Deville. The two had a very nice exchange, followed by an awesome hot tag from the Kabuki warriors. Bliss entered the ring again, and when Renee mentioned that Bliss didn’t want to be in the match because she was scared, Graves suggested that she could be scared of getting scurvy from Kairi Sane. You know, because she is a pirate. So dumb, but pretty funny. Then we saw Rose and Asuka battling a bit, culminating in Rose tapping out to the Asuka lock. That left the Kabuki Warriors and Cross and Bliss. When we came back, Cross was locked in a knee bar, but she eventually broke out. And afterwards, she continued to sell the knee, so that was nice. Sane had a yet another really nice hot tag, which reminded me that she never really had a chance to prove herself on the main roster yet. Asuka then tagged back in to fight Bliss, and nearly got stacked up out of an Asuka lock. Sane went up for the insane elbow, but Cross pushed her off the top rope. Asuka then tried to attack Cross on the outside, but Cross trapped her in the apron and beat her down. Sane then took out Cross, only to be floored by a right from Bliss. Bliss then went up and hit Twisted Bliss for the win.
Grade: C+. A lot of this match was awkward, and not the greatest. But that last fall between Bliss and the Kabuki warriors was pretty good. I hope to see more straight up tag matches between some teams, and hopefully put some respect on those championships. I think Cross and Bliss have the most star power in this
And in the main event slot, we had a contract signing on Miz TV. Miz and Dolph Ziggler were going to sign a contract for their match, and Shawn Michaels was there for some reason too. Ziggler quickly insulted both of Michaels and Miz, saying that he is carrying the company on his back since Michaels lost his smile, and Miz lost his balls. Funny, those certainly didn’t happen at the same time. Miz then said the contract was not for a match with Miz, implying it was with Shawn Michaels. Michaels then said that it wasn’t him, and Goldberg came out. Goldberg then signed the contract after Ziggler retreated from the ring. Goldberg then told Ziggler that he was next, as Michaels drilled him with a superkick.
Grade: B. I bumped this up a bit because of the surprise. Goldberg is certainly a way to get a bigger name on this card, and I’m into it. Ziggler can sell a beating like no other, so I’m excited to see him get speared inside out on Sunday.
Overall Grade: B-.
Pros: Andrade vs. Mysterio; OC vs. New Day & Ricochet; Miz TV; IIconics lost their belts :)
Cons: Rollins looks super weak

This Pine Box - The Way Out ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @thispinebox @soulsteprecords ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There must be something in the water in Dayton, Ohio. Some of my favorite bands hail from Dayton (think @thebreeders and @instagbv) and now I’m hearing even more great music from the area thanks to Melvin at Soul Step Records, who has hooked me up with several of their latest featured releases. Tonight I’m soaking in the 70s rock tinged sounds of This Pine Box’s album “The Way Out” and when I say 70s rock I don’t mean Captain Beyond, I mean some old school American style rock you’d crack open some cold ones to at a backyard party somewhere in the Midwest. This is feel good, kick-back rock music that sounds like they could have opened for Springsteen back in the day, but it isn’t kitschy or campy one bit. The album itself is a really fun one to listen to straight through and the sequencing of the tracks walk you through a story that makes you want to roll the windows down and drive around on country roads. One of the things I really love about this album are songs like “The Leaves” that play with big dynamic ranges and really let the band flex their soft and their anthemic sides. I don’t live anywhere near Ohio, but if I did, I’d certainly make an effort to see them live because I can only imagine the energy they bring to a live set. The guitars are bold and fearless and aren’t afraid of a little tasteful solo here and there, the rhythm section is absolutely on point throughout the whole affair and the vocals are big and unapologetic, just like dyed in the wool rock should be. This band has been making waves of their own after being named “Artist of the Month” by radio station WNKU and they’ve also recently shared the stage with the Flaming Lips at Bellweather Fest! This beautiful color variant is sold out but you can still snag the record in other styles here: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ http://www.soulsteprecords.com/ssr036 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #thispinebox #70srock #soulsteprecords #dayton #daytonoh #daytonmusic #vinylexams #vinyl #vinyladdict #vinyljunkie #onmyturntable #nowspinning #nowplaying #vinyligclub #vinyllovers #vinylclub #vinylrecords #vinylcollectionpost #lp #records (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/BupnnnkA146/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=j8w32o6mnka5

Mr. Gnome presents: Mind's Gone
A song to contemplate life
Tumblr media
Pushing the limits of sonic exploration, Cleveland art-rock duo, Mr. Gnome, create a living, breathing, shapeshifting realm of psychedelic orchestration on their eagerly anticipated LP, A Sliver of Space, set to be released September 27th on El Marko Records.
youtube
On the single, the band share, "Mind’s Gone is a song that was written at the height of one of the darkest moments in our lives. I was really struggling from the loss of two very special people in our lives, and it was all really fucking with my head and leaving me feeling like I had lost a part of myself that I wasn’t sure I could ever get back. During this time, I was doing a lot of solo writing sessions, and this song popped into my head out of nowhere - the full song, full melodies, lyrics and music. It was as if something else was writing this song through me, like my antenna was tuned into the right frequency at the right moment."

Mr. Gnome Unveils New Album 'A Sliver of Space' and Announces Fall 2024 Tour
Tumblr media
Pushing the boundaries of sonic exploration, Cleveland art-rock duo Mr. Gnome crafts a dynamic, ever-evolving world of psychedelic orchestration on their highly anticipated LP, *A Sliver of Space*, set to release on September 27th via El Marko Records. Today, the duo unveils their hypnotic first single from the record, "Nothing and Everything." This track embodies the uncertainty, fear, sadness, and confusion experienced by the band during recording, reflecting their sense of a world turned upside down. Yet, as the band explains, “It’s also about understanding that with love, we can get through even the most challenging times. The end of this song is about passion and escape, allowing yourself to live in the moment instead of longing for the past.” See video for “Nothing and Everything” below: You can listen to the new single on YouTube, pre-order the vinyl and CD, and find it on Bandcamp. In addition, Mr. Gnome has announced a full North American fall tour to support the new album. See below for the full list of dates. Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Interpol, Tennis, Temples, Panic at the Disco, Parquet Courts, Ra Ra Riot), *A Sliver of Space* bursts with hypnotic, gritty rock anthems that transition into long-form, drug-fueled journeys, taking listeners on a surreal trip from start to finish. Defying simple genre classification, Mr. Gnome weaves a dense tapestry of textures and influences, anchored by lead singer/guitarist Nicole Barille’s golden harmonies. The album’s relatively compact runtime is packed with electronica, desert rock, punk, indie rock, and lush soundscapes that coalesce into a uniquely defining sound. "When we started writing *A Sliver of Space*," they describe, "we were dealing with significant personal loss and upheaval. Nothing was off-limits lyrically or musically as we delved into the liminal, dreamlike spaces between life and death, consciousness and unconsciousness, past and future, happiness and sadness, the real and the imaginary. This album chronicles our descent into madness and our ultimate salvation through love." Since 2005, Barille and drummer/pianist Sam Meister have been creating expansive, technicolor art-rock, garnering critical acclaim from Rolling Stone (named "Band To Watch" in a spotlight review), Pitchfork, NPR, Paste, Esquire, Spin, Magnet, MTV, KEXP, and American Songwriter. Their music is complemented by DIY visuals, including otherworldly album covers, artistic press photography, and mind-bending short films. Known for their energetic live shows, Mr. Gnome has a strong cult following across the U.S. This sixth release marks their long-awaited return to the stage for a coast-to-coast U.S. tour this fall, joined by touring guitarist/bassist Jonah Meister, who also features on *A Sliver of Space*. Through sound, visuals, and live performances, Mr. Gnome excels at illuminating the beautiful monsters within us all. *A Sliver of Space* finds beauty in chaos, blending spectral sounds with a cinematic perspective, inviting listeners on a soaring, introspective journey. Join them on this adventure. --- **Mr. Gnome - Fall 2024 Tour Dates** - 08/24 • Lexington, KY • Expansion Music Fest • The Burl - 09/27 • Wheeling, WV • Waterfront Hall - 09/28 • Frostburg, MD • The Deep End - 10/01 • Washington, D.C. • Pie Shop - 10/03 • Atlanta, GA • TBA - 10/04 • Pensacola, FL • The Handlebar - 10/05 • Adams, TN • Spoopy Festival - 10/08 • St. Louis, MO • The Platypus - 10/09 • Grand Rapids, MI • Pyramid Scheme - 10/10 • Madison, WI • Gamma Ray Bar - 10/11 • Columbus, OH • Ace of Cups - 10/12 • Dayton, OH • Dayton 20th Music Fest - Blind Bob’s - 10/14 • Kansas City, MO • Sister Anne’s Records and Coffee - 10/15 • Denver, CO • Lost Lake - 10/16 • Salt Lake City, UT • The DLC - 10/17 • Boise, ID • Shrine Social Club (Basement) - 10/18 • Portland, OR • Star Theater - 10/19 • Seattle, WA • Sunset Tavern - 10/22 • San Francisco, CA • Bottom of the Hill - 10/23 • Los Angeles, CA • Permanent Records Roadhouse - 10/25 • Tucson, AZ • 191 Toole - 10/26 • Albuquerque, NM • Juno Brewery - 10/28 • Dallas, TX • TBA - 10/29 • Austin, TX • TBA - 11/01 • Chicago, IL • Beat Kitchen - 11/02 • Cleveland, OH • Beachland Ballroom Read the full article
