If I may add some David Tomlinson propaganda, he is a highlight of a very odd Vincent Price movie: The City Under the Sea (or War-Gods of the Deep). He plays Tab Hunter’s rather bumbling sidekick who inexplicably carries his pet chicken about on this perilous submarine quest. It’s marvellous.

If ‘scrungly’ were in the dictionary, would he not accompany the definition?

That’s right last week marked 60 years since the release of Mary Poppins in cinemas and it has stayed around and delighted many generations from that moment forward. John Hurt (A Man for All Seasons)—Mostly John Hurt was scrungling a bit later than our timeframe, but he started out as an odd little dude in A Man For All Seasons, 1966. He's...I mean, he's John Hurt, he has a remarkable ability to be unsettling, and even when he's not unsettling he's odd? Such a great Caligula in I, Claudius--though again, that's past the timeframe.
