THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
January 16, 2009
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (subtitled A Serious Comedy for Trivial People) is a three act comedy of manners by Oscar Wilde. The story: Two wealthy young gentlemen have taken to bending the truth in order to put some excitement into their lives. Bachelor Jack Worthing has invented a brother, Ernest, who he uses as an excuse to leave his dull country life to visit the beautiful young Gwendolyn. Algernon Moncrieff decides to take the name Ernest when visiting Worthing's young and beautiful ward, Cecily. Things start to go awry when they all end up together in the country, and their deceptions are discovered by the persistent inquiries of the imperious Lady Bracknell.
It was first performed on Valentine's Day 1895 in London, England. The play was first performed in New York that same year, and has been seen on Broadway eight times since, the last being in 2011. The play has been seen on screens (big and small) many times, the most famous being in 1952 (starring Michael Redgrave, father of Lynn and Vanessa) and the most recent 2002 (starring Colin Firth). The play is in constant production in regional (see below), educational, and community venues.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST was produced by New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse (Millburn) from January 14 to February 15, 2009. It was directed by David Schweizer with costumes by David Murin and scenery by Alexander Dodge. It starred John Wayne Wilcox (Jack), Jeffrey Carlson (Algernon), Keith Reddin (Rev. Chausuble), Chris Spencer Wells (Merriman / Oscar Wilde), Lynn Redgrave (Lady Bracknell), Annika Boras (Gwendolyn), Zoe Winters (Cecily), Cynthia Mace (Miss Prism), and Justin Bellero and Matthew Capodicasa as Footmen.
In the pantheon of English theatre, Hamlet is generally considered to be the finest tragedy ever written, and EARNEST the best comedy. The fact that both are in constant production is testament to those somewhat immeasurable assessments. Although Paper Mill Playhouse is not known for producing the 'classiscs' – this century old audience pleaser is one that entertains everyone and stands up to multiple viewings. This production added some wild(e) new elements, including the playwright himself observing the show from a theatre box, sipping champagne and (oddly) making the 'cell phone speech (”Whatever those are!”) The production eliminated one of the intermissions of the three-act, three-set comedy, forcing the set design Alexander Dodge to create a clever set that could entertainingly transform from London flat to Manor House Garden in front of the audiences eyes. It worked! The first act was monochrome, the second verdant greens, and the third reds and blacks. Wow! The costumes were pretty outrageous but had their logic and followed the color scheme of the scenery.
Despite all this diversion, the real star of this show was its real star – Miss Lynn Redgrave. There's something to say for having genuine English Theatre royalty playing the English Theatre's most cherished character role – Lady Augusta Bracknell. It is also more poignant that her father starred in the most famous film adaptation of the play. Not only was Lynn Redgrave glorious on stage, she was one of the loveliest actors ever to pass through the Millburn stage doors. And I don't say this because she sadly died just a year after EARNEST. It was just as true from the time she left the building to the time she left this earth. While her sister has a sterner reputation, Lynn exuded generosity and love. Although I wasn't there that night, Vanessa did come to Paper Mill to see her sister perform, testament to their sibling bond. Although there have been many EARNESTs since 2009, this one was memorable – if for nothing other than Miss Lynn Redgrave.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST rates 4 Paper Moons out of 5

Passing on Plague
Yersinia pestis picked up several tricks. One is yersinia murine toxin (Ymt), a protein that helps it colonise the gut of fleas, its vectors between mammal hosts. Pictured are sections of flea guts, showing the thin oesophagus connecting to the larger midgut, after they were fed blood containing mutant Y. pestis, lacking Ymt. If acquired from mouse (top panels) or human blood, these bacteria struggle to take hold and are quickly eliminated. By contrast, when ingested with brown rat blood (below), which fleas take longer to digest, Y. pestis can persist even in the absence of Ymt. Variation between species suggests ancient strains lacking Ymt could already use fleas to move between certain hosts. Gaining Ymt then opened the door to much greater flea-borne transmission, between more species, highlighting how genetic innovations can alter the course of disease history.

Broadway & Accesibility
Written by L. Musch
Broadway in NYC consists of 40 theaters that are visited by over 12 million audience members annually. 80% of all tickets in the 2014–2015 season were purchased by caucasian theatregoers. The average age of the Broadway theatregoer in the 2019–2020 season was 42.3 years old and the average household income of these audience members was $261,000, much higher than the U.S national average of $87,863. The average price of a ticket for a Broadway show has been reported to be $145.60 per ticket. In other words, these audiences are, mostly, old, rich and white. In this essay I’m gonna discuss how social media has been revolutionizing Broadway and the theatre experience over the past few years.
On january 10th, 2009, the Broadway revival of the musical GYPSY was ending it’s run at the St. James Theatre. Broadway icon Patti LuPone (who won her second Tony award for her performance in this production) noticed several camera flashes coming from the audience, causing her to almost trip twice. When another flash went off she stopped the show to yell at the audience member taking pictures and had them kicked out. After that she continued her performance. While this event was happening another audience member made an illegal audio recording from this performance. The recording ended up on YouTube and the rant went viral.
Due to the lack of accesibility surrounding Broadway, there’s a huge demand for illegal footage of performances, which is why bootlegs (illegal recordings of Broadway shows) are the perfect solution for fans who wouldn’t be able to experience the shows in person. To fans, bootlegs give the complete picture of the Broadway experience. It includes the parts of the show that aren’t in the official cast recordings, which can be important, because often just hearing lyrics and music cannot justify the plotholes between the songs. Bootlegs give fans all over the world an understanding of the show, even if it’s recorded with a low quality phone and another audience member’s head is in frame for most of the video.
Although many theatre people, including actors such as Patti Murin (Anna in Frozen the musical), believe that bootlegs will destroy Broadway forever. Because they believe that people will stop paying for the shows since they can see them online for free.
Personally, I believe this is a very privileged way of thinking. The fans that watch, post and trade these bootlegs are mostly teenagers. Teenagers who constantly tweet about their favourite broadway shows, who stream these cast recordings on spotify and who get shows that are currently on Broadway trending on apps like TikTok.
I’d like to use the Broadway hit Hamilton as an example. When the show started it’s run on Broadway it didn’t take long for it to become huge on social media, teenagers quickly started an online fan community on sites like Twitter and Tumblr and the soundtrack was everywhere. Hamilton bootlegs on YouTube got the most views out of all of them, yet it was the second-highest-grossing show (behind only The Lion King). The show set a Broadway box office record for the most money grossed in a single week in New York City in late november 2016, when it grossed $3.3 million for an eight-performance week. the first show to break $3 million in eight performances.
I also believe Hamilton’s online succes has a lot to do with it’s creator and lead Lin-Manuel Miranda being very active on Twitter and engaging with young fans, posting loads of backstage content and answering many questions about the show. Another show that has gained a lot of attention because of social media is Beetlejuice the musical. Presley Ryan (Former ensemble member and now currently starring as Lydia Deetz in the show) started sharing videos of her and other cast members on the app TikTok. Beetlejuice didn’t do very well in the first weeks of it’s run, but became a huge hit when the soundtrack started going viral online.
“TikTok was a game changer for Beetlejuice because it allowed our original cast recording to reach millions more young people than Broadway marketing campaigns usually allow,” explains Jennifer Graessle, social media manager for the musical. Graessle believes the musical’s songs work well on TikTok because of their quick, quirky lyrics. The success on TikTok has helped drive 150 million streams for the cast recording, “and its popularity, both on TikTok and beyond, has had a residual effect on the show’s social media presence and ticket sales,” she says. It’s also been a savior for the show — even if it’s being kicked out of New York’s Winter Garden Theater, to be replaced by a revival of The Music Man. Initial reaction towards the production when it launched on Broadway in October 2018 was muted. “I think that word of mouth is what has saved the show from the initial critics of the show who are from an older generation and maybe just didn’t ‘get us’,” says Ryan.
An alternative for bootlegs could be streaming services. There is currently one named Broadway HD. For $8,99 a month you can watch proshots of a limited collection of Broadway plays and musicals. Hopefully the streaming service will continue to broaden their collection and open up a whole new world for anyone at home or unable to travel to NYC.
During the recent pandemic there have also been many livestreams of shows that aren’t currently running anymore, like the recent stream of David Bowie’s Lazarus, which was recorded live in 2016 and streamed earlier this month in honor of the icon’s birthday.
So obviously, the theatre industry has been taking steps to broaden the representation of the performing arts on the internet. Despite the fact that we are far from truly accesible Broadway content i do believe that it will eventually evolve to be that. Theatre people are realizing that the public wants to pay for proshots or streams.
I believe that accesibility will create more appreciation for the arts and therefore save Broadway.

Ученые узнали, какие продукты вызывают рак простаты
High-fat diet proven to fuel prostate cancer progression by imitating a key cancer alteration
What molecular event happens for prostate cancer to progress faster and to be deadlier when patients eat a high-fat diet? This is the question Dr. David P. Labbé, a scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), and his colleagues recently elucidated. In a study published in Nature Communications, they showed that saturated fat intake induces a cellular reprogramming that is associated with prostate cancer progression and lethality. These findings could have a clinical utility in identifying patients at higher risk of a more aggressive, lethal disease. In addition, they suggest that dietary intervention involving the reduction of animal fat, and specifically saturated fat consumption in men with early-stage prostate cancer, could possibly diminish or delay the risk of disease progression.
Some genes—called oncogenes—play a role in cancer initiation and progression. MYC is one of those.
«In this paper, we showed that by mimicking a MYC overexpression, saturated fat intake makes prostate cancer worse,» says Dr. Labbé, who started this study at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the United States, under the supervision of Dr. Myles A. Brown, Director of the Center for Functional Cancer Epigenetics and Emil Frei III Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
«MYC overexpression profoundly rewires cellular programs and bolsters a distinctive transcriptional signature. MYC is a key factor in tumorigenesis, i.e. it induces malignant properties in normal cells and fuels the growth of cancer cells,» adds Dr. Labbé, who is also assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology at McGill University.
Based on answers to validated food frequency questionnaires obtained from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and the Physician Health Study cohorts, researchers were able to stratify prostate cancer patients based on their fat intake—high-fat diet vs. low-fat diet—and the type of fat they were eating—either saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat. By integrating dietary and gene expression data from 319 patients, researchers discovered that animal fat and specifically saturated fat consumption mimicked a MYC overexpression. They validated their findings in vivo using a murine prostate cancer model.
Strikingly, patients who had the highest level of the saturated fat intake (SFI) MYC signature were four times more likely to die from prostate cancer, compared to patients with the lowest level, independently of the patient’s age or year at diagnosis. Even after adjusting the results for cancer Gleason grade—an indicator of the aggressiveness of the disease—this association remained significative.
Since fat consumption could be linked to an increase in body fat and obesity, and since obesity is also a risk factor associated with prostate cancer, Dr. Labbé used the Body Mass Index (BMI) to make sure that it was only saturated fat intake—and not obesity—that promoted the progression to a metastatic and lethal disease.
«Even after removing obesity from the equation, patients with high levels of the SFI-MYC signature are still three times more likely to die of prostate cancer,» says Dr. Labbé. «Epidemiological studies have previously reported that saturated fat intake is associated with prostate cancer progression. Our study provides a mechanistic underpinning to this link and a basis to develop clinical tools aimed at reducing the consumption of saturated fat and increasing the odds of surviving.»
The study also showed that for saturated fat to induce MYC reprogramming, the tissue needs to be transformed.
«In a prostate cancer patient, the prostate contains both tumour and normal tissue,» explains Dr. Labbé. «We showed that saturated fat intake only affects the transcriptional program in the tumour tissue.»
«Altogether, our findings suggest that a substantial subset of prostate cancer patients, including some without MYC amplification, may benefit from epigenetic therapies targeting MYC transcriptional activity or from dietary interventions targeting metabolic addictions regulated by MYC.»
Knowing the dietary pattern of a patient or his level of physical activity, clinicians could eventually suggest some specific intervention to decrease the likelihood of progression to a lethal disease. But in order to do that, more research is needed.
«The impact of diet on cancer development has been first established more than 100 years ago. However, lifestyle-related data is only sparsely collected among patients, thereby limiting our capacity to define the molecular link between lifestyle factors and cancer initiation, progression and lethality,» says Dr. Labbé. «We will start soon here at the RI-MUHC to gather dietary and physical activity and assess body fatness information from patients undergoing screening tests for different cancers. And with that data, combined with research in the laboratory, we hope to be able to build personalized interventions for patients who are more at risk of having their cancer progress rapidly, and to ultimately improve outcomes.» Ученые узнали, какие продукты вызывают рак простаты. August Hallmark Projects
Now let’s see what Hallmark brought up this month! Like always, all the information/speculation I put in this is based off of factors such as social media posts from different Hallmark actors/actresses, general social media info and/or a production website I look at often. Things such air dates, airing networks, co-stars, movie titles, etc, are always subject to change.
Aimee Teegarden and Evan Roderick - New York Autumn Love Story (Update) - We now have the leads and according to my twitter source, it’s one of 2 Fall premieres in October for the network.
Antonio Cupo - Christmas at the Golden Dragon - Director is David Strasser; Not sure is Cupo is staring or producing as of yet. But he is attached to the project.
Patti Murin and Brendan Penny - Christmas Carol Competition - Director is Paula Elle
Lacey Chabert and Wes Brown - Untitled Christmas Project - While it’s not confirmed, they apparently happen to be in the same filming location for an upcoming Christmas movie. So very high chance of this duo happening!
Katherine Barrell - Flight Before Christmas
Alison Sweeny - Christmas Village
Jonathan Bennett - A Manny for Christmas - Director: Ali Liebert
Lights, Camera, Christmas - Director is David Weaver - Very likely for Hallmark given David’s work throughout the network.
Christmas in the Big Easy - Director: Troy Scott
Christmas Italiano - Director: Catherine Cyran
When I Think of Christmas - Director: Peter Benson
Fit for Christmas - Director: Jessica Harmon

So for those who dont know Criterion has doublefeatures on their streaming service, and I decided to watch one called Cheap Tricks ,which was two B movies made by producer Jack Harris .The first film was the Blob ,which is a classic that I have seen multiple times ....The second film, the one I hsall talk about is a strange little flick called Equinox
the plot of this 1970 film follows David (Edward Connell),Jim (Frank Bonner ) ,Susan (Barbara Hewitt),and Vicki (Robin Christopher) as they go for a picnic/meet up with Dr. Arthur Watermann (Fritz Lieber ) ,only to stumble upon an ancient book which they must keep out of the hands of Asmodeus (Jack Woods ) and his various demonic monsters
Now I will always have a soft spot for "Hey lets make our own movie " movies ,truly independent films appeal to me (I love the Blob for similar reasons ).The film actually reminds a LOT of Evil Dead which would be made a decade later ,not only due to the similar plot of a group of friends coming across a ancient book and being terroized by demonic forces, but in the group of amatures making a film feel.I also want to point out some of the people in this wnent on to bigger things like how Frank Bonner went onto appear in the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati , David Allen went onto a lot of TV and Movie stop motion work (Dolls,Puppet Master ,The Howling ,Q the Winged Serpent ,etc ),and the film was the brain child of Denis Murin who went on to help found ILM ,and work on the likes of Star Wars and Jurassic Park . I think the effects scenes are great particularly all the stop motion, and the force perspective battle with the green giant .I like the main characters ,and though the acting can be stiff, thought most of them were pretty good
Now I wont lie ....It has goofy moments ,and most of them are courtesy of Jack Woods .See Denis Murin made the movie but when Jack Harris got ahold of it he wanted to add a few more scenes ,which were directed by Jack Woods ,who also play an added villain Asmodeous .....PRoblem is Woods isnt a great actor ,cause whenever he tries to be scary I am laughing,he's just really non threatening looking .In fact the film is more silly then scary .Also dont like the framing device
So yes it is not a perfect movie and I dont love it ....But I was never bored , its a fun watch, and I have nothing but respect for the people who made it.I feel like Ash describing the Xenomorph in Alien,"I admire its purity ".Making art is hard, and I admire this film for just existing

March 2018 Playlist
Summary: This is when I started making some changes to my life by limiting or cutting a lot of toxic people from my life. I warned one of my friends who still wished to interact with them about their toxic behaviors and they seemed to take it into consideration at the time, but things started ending up going south later eventually. Which, deeply saddened me because I sincerely treasured and care for that friendship, but I couldn’t keep holding on to it if they weren’t willing to do the same. However, I think it was necessary for me to experience it as well because this experience strengthened the relationships I had with my friends and made us definitely realize that we needed to be more open about our struggles physically, mentally, and socially on things. Therefore, I think this is one of my favorite playlists because it highlights the struggles of me letting those toxic relationship go, working on fostering my current relationships, and accepting the fact that I couldn’t keep pushing my friends away when I needed help because they care and love me for who I am.
