Today would have been the 82nd birthday of actor David Macklin, who passed away in April 2017. Here he is with Ken Osmond ("Eddie Haskell") and Grandpa in The Munsters episode 68, Herman’s Sorority Caper, and in the Twilight Zone episode The Ring-a-Ding Girl.
I never met David "in real life" but he and I were online friends for many years, dating back to the days of message boards and Yahoo Groups, before Facebook or Tumblr even existed. We conversed by email, snail mail, and phone over the years. He sent me an autographed copy of his book, Acting in the Motion Picture Business. David was a perennial guest star on many classic TV series in the 1960's and 70's, including Perry Mason (4 episodes), Gunsmoke, The Virginian, Tammy, The Fugitive, The FBI, Medical Center, Gidget, Lassie, Ironside, and more. He starred with Jack Klugman in a short-lived NBC sitcom, Harris Against the World (1964-65). Tonight, in David's honor, I will rewatch the episode of Bonanza (The Blood Line, 1960) where David played the angry young man. The DVD includes David's commentary on the episode. Happy Birthday, old friend.

Black Fantasy TBR Part 2
Tumblr media
Part 1 is here.
Since the last segment of my tbr was more focused on standalone novels and duologies, this list will be more focused on trilogies and longer series. Aside from the first 8 series mentioned here being a mix of adult fantasy and epic fantasy (I know the Acacia trilogy, especially, is an epic fantasy that's been frequently compared to Game of Thrones in reviews), there's no real order to these books either. And ofc, please look up age ratings and trigger warnings :) For simplicities sake I only put the first book of each series on this list.
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin
Acacia: The War with the Mein by David Anthony Durham
Scarlet Odyssey by C.T. Rwizi
Half a Lion by Palle E.K. Oswald
Unleashed: The Saga of Ruination by Ramon Terrell
Song of Blood and Stone by L. Penelope
Stars and Garters by Thursday Owusu
The Battle for the Sky by Dalila Caryn
Daughters of Nri by Reni K. Amayo
Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows
A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney
The Bones of Ruin by Sarah Raughley
The Chameleon with a Sword by B.L. Logan
Sing Me to Sleep by Gabi Burton
Chaos & Flame by Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland
We Are the Origin by C.M. Lockhart
The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow**
The Royal Heretic by Sarah Macklin
Dragon Connection: The Stone Crown Book 1 by Ava Richardson*
The Soul Cages by Nicole Givens Kurtz
Truth Seer by Kay L. Moody
Dragon Link: Ragond's Portal War Book 1 by Ava Richardson*
The Conductors by Nicole Glover
The Raven and the Dove by Kaitlyn Davis
Dragon's Mage: Ragond's Witch Hunter Book 1 by Ava Richardson*
Beasts of Prey by Ayana Gray
Nobody's Goddess by Amy McNulty
The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
*Dragon Connection, Dragon Link, and Dragon's Mage are the first books of three separate trilogies by Ava Richardson. To avoid confusion I spelled out the whole name of each trilogy.
**In The Ten Thousand Doors of January, January is technically mixed, and I believe she identifies as such.

"Mr. Macklin takes his knife And carves the yellow pumpkin face: Three holes bring eyes and nose to life, The mouth has thirteen teeth in place. Then Mr. Macklin just for fun Transfers the corn-cob pipe from his Wry mouth to Jack’s, and everyone Dies laughing! O what fun it is Till Mr. Macklin draws the shade And lights the candle in Jack’s skull. Then all the inside dark is made As spooky and as horrorful As Halloween, and creepy crawl The shadows on the tool-house floor, With Jack’s face dancing on the wall. O Mr. Macklin! where's the door?" ~David McCord
Happy Halloween!
May your day be full of wonderful tricks and treats; starting with this lovely jack o'lantern trio, ready to light up the night! I couldn't help but go back to naming things for poems for this one. There's simply too many wonderful Halloween poems to resist.
Mr. Macklin's Jack O'Lanterns come in twelve swatches and are base game compatible. They also work off the grid, since they're supposed to be lit by candles.

UCONN MATT WOOD SELECTED IN NHL DRAFT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - On the first day of the NHL draft, the Nashville Predators selected UConn's Matt Wood at number 15. Wood slipped down a bit further than he was expected to be selected partly because Anaheim, picking at number two, and the Arizona Coyotes at number six, made surprise choices that gave some other teams an opening to select differently than they had wanted or planned to. Speaking to ESPN's Emily Kaplan right afterward, Wood was very complimentary of his UCONN coaches led by Mike Cavanaugh. "(I was) really happy to be there and play for my coaches and they helped me to get ready for this." Wood was the fifth UCONN player since joining Hockey East to be drafted. He wore #71 for his idol Evgeni Malkin. In speaking to Kaplan, incoming Nashville GM Barry Trotz, who's replacing the retiring David Poile, was succinct in his initial evaluation, "Short term, we'll let him develop (back at UCONN). We look at the profile; he's a big body that can score. He's got a long way to go. If you wanna go far in the playoffs, you gotta score. We hope he'll exhibit (his scoring) and he checks all the boxes." Nashville has two former Huskies under their umbrella, Czechs Jachym Kondelik, the Huskies all time-assist leader, and goalie Tomas Vomacka, who they both drafted and played in the minors with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and the Florida Everblades (ECHL), respectively. Wood played very solidly as a 17-year-old freshman. He led the Huskies in scoring with 34 points in 35 games. Wood was superb in the IIHF U-18 bronze medal game for Canada with the game-tying goal in the last minute with the goalie pulled and made a beautiful feathered short pass to Macklin Celebrini for the game-winner in OT 4-3 win over Slovakia. Wood had a three-point performance, garnering a plus-12 and 13 points in just seven games in the tournament. He will return to Storrs next season, be among the top players in Hockey East, and is WJC eligible for Canada. He turned down an offer from the WHL Regina Pats, who drafted him and ex-Pack championship head coach, the current Regina head coach and VP of Hockey Operations John Paddock, to play there and with the first overall selection, Connor Bedard. Instead, Wood chose to come to UCONN and chart his course. At 6'4, he surpassed Tage Thompson as the highest-drafted Husky ever. A total of 10 Huskies have been drafted in the short Hockey East history of the program. RANGERS SELECTIONS The Rangers drafted 23rd overall and selected were able to have a strong player fall to them in Gabriel (Gabe) Perreault. He has lots of offensive upside potential and is heading to Boston College (HE) with linemates Will Smith (San Jose) and Ryan Leonard (Washington). They were together on the USNDTP (USHL) last fall. All three will face Wood at the XL Center when BC comes to play UConn at the XL Center in a marquee matchup. Perreault broke the team record for scoring held by Auston Matthews with 159 points. "It's cool because he's one of the guys I look up to and one of those guys to look up above you," said Perreault to ESPN. Hockey is a big part of the Perreault family. His sister Liliane just completed her collegiate career at Mercyhurst (Erie, PA) (AHA), and his brother Jacon plays with San Diego. His father, Yanic Perreault, is the skills development coach in Chicago and, for eight consecutive seasons, held the NHL's best faceoff percentage at an average of 62.89%. He played 859 games with three tours in Toronto, LA, Nashville, and his hometown Montreal. NOTES: UCONN got another commit for next season in New Hampshire native LW Ben Muthersbaugh, who played for the NJ Titans (NAHL) last year after spending time previously at Tilton School (NHPREP). Ex-Sound Tiger Paul Flache takes a second stab as an assistant coach with the Flint Firebirds (OHL) after being with Atlanta (USPHL Premier) for the last three years. Joining him is a former Ranger from the early-to-mid 1980s and two-time Stanley Cup winner in Edmonton making his North American return is Reijo Ruotsalainen. The 63-year-old Ruotsalainen had been coaching in Europe, though not over the last three years. His previous coaching assignment was with, Kiekko-Vantaa (Finland-Mestis) as an assistant coach. While he had a successful NHL career of 443 games and 344 points and was voted the best defenseman in the 1980 WJC (his third) tourney, had he been playing hockey today, he would rival Erik Carlsson of the San Jose Sharks in the skill game from the blueline in this more free-wheeling era of hockey. After leaving the NHL, he played in three World Championships, one Olympic tournament for Finland, and another 402 games in Europe (Switzerland, Sweden, and Finland). He hasn't been to North America since 2001 as an assistant coach with the long-defunct New Orleans Brass (ECHL), featured one-time Rangers head coach Ted Sator at the helm, and had former New Haven Senator Jeff Lazaro as a player. Ross Colton (Taft Prep), who scored the game-winning Cup-clinching goal three years ago for the Tampa Bay Lightning, was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. Connor Doherty (Sacred Heart University) re-signs with the Maine Mariners (ECHL). After four years in Denmark and nine in Europe, Mike Little of Enfield, the SonderyskE team captain last season, has left the team. Is this the end of the road for the 35-year-old, or is he likely to play a few more years in a new destination? Derek Barach (Salisbury School) heads from Ässät Pori (Finland-FEL) and takes the risky proposition and signs with Vityaz Moscow (Russia-KHL) to continue his European-only career. The newest college hockey program was announced at the Bridgestone Arena in Tennessee, the site of the NHL Draft. It will be the first at a historically black college and university (HBCU). The club will be Tennessee State and play at the ACHA club hockey division level. The coaching staff is yet to be determined. The project was an all-in process as the NHL, NHLPLA, and College Hockey Inc. were all involved. The program will start in the 2024-25 season with a look toward going varsity Division-1 level down the road, and it will be the first hockey at an HCBU, hopefully leading to more significant participation of Blacks, Latinos, and other ethnic groups in the sport of hockey in the US and around the world. The college hockey season is over by nearly three months activity continues as Quinnipiac University stands at the mountaintop. UCONN HOCKEY HOME Read the full article

Willard Gaylin, a Pioneer in Bioethics, Is Dead at 97
Tumblr media
"As a young scholar, I was afraid of Will -- he was a formidable presence," Thomas Murray, who was an assistant researcher in the center during the 1980s before becoming the center's president in 1999, told me by phone. "He was not a fan of stupidity and would not hesitate to inform you if you committed an error. I gained a lot by studying him." Dr. Murray, Dr. Macklin and Dr. Gaylin edited and contributed to "Feeling Good and Doing Better: Ethics and Nontherapeutic Drug Use" (1984). In his introduction to the book Dr. Gaylin wrote that despite the potential of mood-altering drugs to treat addiction, mental illness and other health issues, they caused as much discomfort as they brought satisfaction. "It is part of what I have referred to as the 'Frankenstein Factor,'" the author wrote. "Research that changes or controls 'the nature of our species' or allows for any 'mechanical' influencing of human behavior will almost inevitably be received with more fear than other research that may be riskier for the individual and more dangerous to the species." "Feeling Good and Doing Better" was among the many books that Dr. Gaylin wrote, some together with Hastings Center colleagues but mostly independently, about topics like the subjects of despair, anger, hatred and psychotherapy. In a review of "Hatred: The Psychological Descent Into Violence" (2003) in The New York Times, the anthropologist Melvin Konner wrote, "Willard Gaylin has long been one of our leading explainers of psychology, and his books on love, despair, the male ego and other puzzles of human nature have unfailingly made difficult questions plain." The Dr. Gaylin examined the 1977 murder of an Yale student Bonnie Garland, by her ex-boyfriend Richard Herrin in "The Killing of Bonnie Garland: A Question of Justice" (1982). Herrin. Herrin pleaded not guilty because of a mental disorder or defect. He was found guilty of manslaughter. "With skillful analysis," David Johnston wrote in his review of the publication within The Los Angeles Times, "he examines the ever-broadening interpretations of the insanity defense and how our perceptions (and popular misconceptions) about Freudian thinking befuddle and confuse our criminal justice system, just as Bonnie's rejection befuddled and confused Herrin."   Read the full article

We are in 1982, a man on the phone talking about coming to collect from his bookie. He's watching a car race and holding a ring. Someone else is loading a gun and the proceeds to shoot the man in head, killing him, blood hitting the television screen.
Jump to the present, and a young man is also watching a car race. He isn't happy with the race and kicks in the tv screen. His mother rushes in to see what's going on. She realizes Donald, her son, has bet on something after promising not to. He says he has debts to pay. He grabs his coat and heads through their store, looking for money in the cash register. His mother is trying to get through to him when someone knocks on the door. Donald asks her to send the person away, afraid he'll get killed like his dad. He hides when the man enters, letting his mother get punched in the face. The man finds Donald and roughs him up, breaking his finger.
In their apartment, the man is going through the mother's jewelry and finds an old World Series ring. He puts it on, but it begins to shoot arcs of electricity, breaking the mirror and throwing the man around the room. He is eventually killed as Donald watches. Then Donald takes the ring off of him and in the gem in the center he sees the winner of a horse race.
At Curious Goods, Micki is on the phone with the police property room, asking about a World Series ring. They can't help her. Ryan says the ring was the very first thing Uncle Louis listed in the manifest, so it's been out in the world the longest. Micki says they know the ring was made for the Chicago White Sox, a shoe in to win the Series in 1919, but they threw the game. Then it was sold. Micki wonders if the ring could be associated with gambling.
Donald is tending to his mother, telling her it'll all be okay and that his luck is changing. He kisses her and heads out. His mother notices her ransacked jewelry and that the ring is missing.
At a club, a bookie, Macklin, is counting money brought by his goons. They tell Mr. Macklin that a fellow goon, Angelo, is missing after going to Donald's for payment. They wonder if Angelo took the money. Macklin tells the goons to split up and look for Angelo and talk to Donald.
Micki and Ryan are going through all their files pertaining to gambling when Donald's mother comes in to the store. She has one of their mailers. She said she had an old World Series ring they might want. She then tells them the ring was just stolen. Ryan asks why she didn't bring it back when she had it, but Micki realizes the lady knows the ring is cursed. She said she wasn't sure she could trust them. She also tells them about her husband using the ring to win at gambling. She says the cops though Macklin killed him, but couldn't prove it. But now she is afraid her son is using the ring.
At a bar, Donald comes in happy and flush with cash. He buys drinks for all but the bartender wants his tab paid. Macklin's goon wants the money Donald owes, and takes him out, driving him home to get the rest of his money. Donald tries to get the man to try on the ring, and leaves him with it while he pretends to head in to his home. The ring kills again, Donald watching and laughing as it does. He then rushes to the car, takes the ring off the dead man, and sees the winning goal of a hockey game in the gem. His mother watches from the window. Donald drags the dead man to the sewer and drops him inside.
Later, he is showing his mother the new television he bought, and an expensive necklace, but she won't touch it. She knows how he is winning. He says he's paid off his debts, and now wants to use his new luck to break Macklin. She tells him she saw him kill that man, but Donald won't stop. He takes off.
Micki is still researching Macklin when Ryan comes in with the paper, and shows her an article about Donald winning big. They suspect he's using the ring and head out to find him.
At the bar, Donald pays his bar tab. The bartender and another man question him paying back Macklin, and Donald says he is going to own him, soon, and heads out. The other man follows. Outside, the guy, Benny, wants in on whatever Donald is into. Donald tells him to get lost, so the guy threatens to go to Macklin. Donald calls Benny over, shows him his good luck charm and tells him to try it on. Benny does, as Donald steps away and the ring throws Benny around, killing him. In the ring's gem, Donald sees the winning play at the end of a basketball game.
Micki and Ryan arrive at the Wren family store, and ask her about Donald. She tells them he has the ring, but he wouldn't hurt innocent people. She insists they can't call the cops, and they say they just want the ring. She was going to check his favorite bars, so they offer to take her.
At the bar, Donald is watching the basketball game when his mom, Micki and Ryan arrive. She goes to talk to Donald, begging him to stop gambling. She wants the ring, he won't fork it over. She tells him his father died over it, but nothing can get through to her son. He wants to buy her dream retirement home in the Bahamas. She asks if he will stop using it after that, buying into his false promises. He tells her to go home. She tells Micki and Ryan that Donald will bring the ring back tonight. They don't believe it, so Micki tells Ryan to get the woman a cab and wait outside, she will try and get Donald to leave with her. Donald is watching the game and spots Micki at the bar.
Macklin is hearing from his goon about the other goons' bodies being found floating in the sewer. The phone rings, and it is the bartender alerting Macklin to Donald being in the bar. Macklin tells him not to let him leave.
Donald approaches Micki, offering to buy her a drink. She flirts back and says they should go somewhere quiet. The bartender asks where he's going, but Donald blows him off. Micki says they should go to Donald's place and they drive off, with Ryan following.
Donald notices Micki looking to make sure Ryan is behind them and thinks they are both working for Macklin. He speeds off, driving to a secluded spot and tries to force the ring on to Micki's finger. Micki bites his hand and takes off. Donald trips and is the confronted with Macklin's goon, who takes Donald. Micki comes out of hiding as Ryan finally finds her. They race off to find Donald.
At the closed club, the goons drop Donald in to a chair across from Macklin. The bookie wants to know how Donald's luck could change so quickly. Donald tries to say he has a system. Macklin says Donald's father had a system, too, and wants to know what it is. Donald won't tell him, so Macklin cuts off one of his fingers. He says he has more fingers to go before he kills him, then has his goons take him away.
At her store, Micki and Ryan fill in the old lady about Donald's latest shenanigans. She can't believe it, then tells them that Donald wants to ruin Macklin, blaming the bookie for his father's death. They head off to Macklin's club to find Donald as she swears it is the ring's fault, not Donald's.
Macklin is watching a boxing match, and has his goon bring Donald back. Donald is bloody, having been beaten up. Macklin wants to know who will win the match, and roughs Donald up some more.
Micki and Ryan pull up out front. Macklin is still pushing Donald for the outcome of the match. Donald lies, saying he just takes a guess. Ryan and Micki see a cab pull up with Donald's mother, who goes in to the club. They go to find way in.
Inside, Donald's mother is shocked to see the condition her son is in. Macklin wants her to talk sense in to her son. The boxing match ends with the opposite outcome Donald predicted, so Macklin wants to cut off another finger. His mother begs her son to tell the truth. But Donald says he'll just kill him like his father. Macklin says if he doesn't, he'll kill his mother. The goon takes him away again.
Outside, out back, Micki and Ryan are looking for a way inside. They see other gangsters enter a back door.
The goon is about to chop off another finger, when Donald tricks the man by telling him to take his ring. In the other room, his mother tells Macklin about the ring.
Micki approaches the goon outside and asks to be let in, and while he is distracted, Ryan knocks him out.
Donald shows the ring to the goon, saying it is good luck. Macklin isn't buying the story his mother is telling him, but they hear the goon's screams and rush to see what's happening. The ring kills the goon, Donald removes the ring and sees the winner of the bare-knuckle fighting match. Macklin and Donald's mother come in and see the dead man.
Donald tells Macklin what he saw, and then his mother tells Macklin to put the ring on and see for himself. Macklin takes it, look at it, and then him and his goon take them both outside. They go in to the other building where the gangsters went and we see it is full of people watching the cage fight Donald saw in the ring. Micki and Ryan also sneak inside.
Everyone is watching the fight, Macklin is wondering how Donald knew about it. Donald reiterates who will win, so Macklin places a bet on it. The fight goes on and the guy Donald said would win, wins. Macklin gets his winnings, then takes mother and son to another room. Micki and Ryan try to follow, but are stopped when a goon shuts the door.
In the office, Macklin wants to know how to use the ring to win more. Donald's mother tells him he just has to put the ring on to see. Macklin believes her and puts it on, and the ring does its business on the bookie as Donald laughs. Macklin is tossed around.
Micki notices the guard is distracted so she tells Ryan to get ready.
Macklin is killed and Donald goes to get the ring off the body. His mother begs him to give it up, but with Macklin dead, her son is more determined then ever. Ryan and Micki are confronted with another goon and this time Ryan tackles the guy, fighting him, before Micki knocks him out. Just as they enter the next room, they hear a gunshot, then inside see that Donald has just been shot by his mother. Micki takes the woman away as Ryan gets the ring.
At Curious Goods, Mrs. Wren admits it was her who killed her husband when he wouldn't stop using the ring in 1982. She says she had no choice then, or tonight. Ryan and Micki try to comfort her, and she asks if they are going to tell the police. They both shake their heads no, she says thank you, and leaves.
My thoughts:
A good episode. Well written, with an interesting cursed item. I like how it was a ring for a team that should have won, but didn't, and Louis used this part of it's own history in the curse.
Also liked the mini-mystery of who killed Donald's dad. Not sure if I guessed it the first time, but hard not to see who it was by the end.
I liked Mrs. Wren not being oblivious to what her husband, then son, were up to with the ring, and also trying to keep it safe herself, unsure what Micki and Ryan wanted with the flyer they sent her. She might not do the right thing, but she wants to do the right thing.
Denis Forest is always fun. He is almost like an honorary cast member at this point.
Liked Micki and Ryan doing calls and research to figure things out. Jack isn't here this week, but we see that he has taught them well.
Love Micki and Ryan's quips outside the club about getting good at this. Fun little moment between the two, and again shows how far they have come in a year and a half.
Just a good episode of the show, from start to finish.
Next week: A Friend to the End

Jonathan Ashmore in A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1955) Cast: Celia Johnson, Diana Dors, David Kossoff, Joe Robinson, Jonathan Ashmore, Brenda de Banzie, Primo Carnera, Lou Jacobi, Irene Handl, Sydney Tafler. Screenplay: Wolf Mankowitz, based on his novel. Cinematography: Edward Scaife. Art direction: Wilfred Shingleton. Film editing: Bert Bates. Music: Benjamin Frankel Carol Reed's first color film is a very talky, somewhat claustrophobic one, best remembered today as a portrait of the London Jewish community that inhabited Petticoat Lane (called "Fashion Street" in the film) in the East End. The story centers on young Joe (Jonathan Ashmore), a lover of animals (often to the animals' misfortune, as he can't seem to keep some of them alive) who lives with his mother, Joanna (Celia Johnson), over Mr. Kandinsky's tailoring shop. Kandinsky (David Kossoff) indulges Joe with stories about animals, telling him that if he ever found a unicorn it would bring everyone good luck. So naturally Joe finds one, a feeble little goat with one deformed horn, that a merchant is happy to get rid of. Joe thinks it will bring luck to the pretty Sonia (Diana Dors) and her body-builder boyfriend Sam Heppner (Joe Robinson), who want to get married but don't have the money; to Mr. Kandinsky, who would like to have a better trousers press; and to himself and his mother, who are waiting for his father to return from South Africa, where he has gone to seek his fortune. Things eventually work out for Sonia and Sam and Mr. Kandinsky, but at the film's end Joe and his mother are still waiting for the return of his father. There's a fair amount of whimsy at work, but it's subsumed in much local color and the hard-scrabble realism of the neighborhood. Diana Dors shows considerable depth as an actress, rising above the exploitation that tried to turn her into the British Marilyn Monroe. But the great Celia Johnson is wasted in the thankless role of Joe's mother, with little to do but look worried. The wrestler Primo Carnera appears as Python Macklin, whom Sam must conquer in the ring to make the money he and Sonia want, even though he's reluctant to develop the unphotographic muscles needed by a wrestler.
