Sand Island’s shoreline is pocked with sea caves carved by ice, wind, and the waves of Lake Superior. The lake has “higher water quality, lower watershed stress, and [lower] shoreline development stress than the other Great Lakes,” says Brenda Lafrancois, an ecologist for the National Park Service.

"Three Ukrainian Men" by David Guttenfelder
"There was little left of their father's remains so they draped his Sunday suit over the casket and laid their hands on it during his funeral.
He sat in the shade of a trench, sheltering from enemy artillery strikes. He said he'd used a shovel more than a rifle in this war.
On the evening he was first fitted with his prosthetic leg, he tried climbing the hospital stairs".

David Guttenfelder. November 15, 2013.
From the moment I was born I was made sure to realize the importance of religion. I was baptized as an infant and frequently attend church to this day along with my family. Regardless, this picture speaks to me in many ways about Filipino culture. Amidst a complete and utter state of destruction, disaster, and disrepair stands a statue of Jesus. Its survival reminds me of the significance that Catholocism has to the Filipino people. It is a reason for them to have hope for a brighter tomorrow; despite their dire circumstances.
