Friday Night Flick: Letterpress Amsterdam
This short film by David Bickerstaff … observes the process of traditional letterpress printing in a small studio in Amsterdam run by the graphic designer, typographer and master printer Thomas Gravemaker.     Although I keep reading that letterpress printing is ‘dead’, it seems to be expanding in popularity. Many places now offer classes. Perhaps you can sign up for a letterpress workshop this…

Pics:
1 thru 10. Old stories rendered into new tongues & clad in new arts.
Tales cast into different multi-media variations.
Joined by novel nightmares just set down into print.
All freely fed into the maelstrom of minds that make up new realities as a form of entertainment!
1914: Part 2, Notes.
1. Since I haven't found the full texts to these articles, I'll be using whatever commentary & quotations I stumble across.
2. I think most everybody is aware of Lovecraft's racist beliefs & his willful propaganda of such foul inequality.
3. Isaac Bickerstaffe was an Irish play & booklet¹⁰ writer.
Isaac was also a Lieutenant in the 5th Regiment of the British infantry. And, he served in the Marines during the 7 Years War.
Weird Shit: Bickerstaffe hurt the production of his own 1st play!
Isaac stupidly criticized David Garrick (The top actor-manager of that time!)- for the 'barbarity' of setting Shakespeare's plays to music...
Bickerstaffe's light opera, "Thomas & Sally," was a huge hit - playing around the British Empire!!
From then on, Isaac's comedic works were also successful. He even wrote the 1st English comic opera, "Love in a Village."
More Weird Bits:
3A. A newspaper falsely stated that Bickerstaffe had committed suicide - by drowning himself in the south of France!
3B. Suspected of homosexuality, Isaac fled to mainland Europe.
There, he lived in poverty & misery.
3C. Then, another false news report claimed that Bickerstaffe had died in Sussex, England.
Yet, he actually disappeared around 1808...
3D. After this disappearance, his 'colleague' (Charles Dibdin) was long accused of selling Isaac's songs - as if they were Dibdin's own work...
4. Howard's love of astronomy started when he was 12 years old.
That was when HPL first found his grandma's books on astronomy in the family's attic library.
Soon afterwards, Sarah (Lovecraft's mom) bought him a small mail-order Excelsior spyglass - for 99¢!!
5. Nostradamus was a French astrologer, pharmacist, physician, writer, translator & 'seer.'
He's best known for his book, "The Prophecies," a poetic work that supposedly predicts the future...
Strangely enough, there's several predictions that seem close to actual events.
Yet, you never hear about the totally wrong predictions.
For example, a shooting war (between Russia & the U.S.) was supposed to have started - in the year 2000 AD...
You don't always get what you pay for!
6. Queen Anne of Great Britain was plagued with ailing health all of her life.
She endured 17 pregnancies & yet, outlived all of her children!!
In doing so, she became the last of the Stuart line of succession.
Painfully shy, Anne learned to assert her authority when it was needed!
It was she who oversaw the union of England & Scotland.
7. Johnathan Swift was an Anglo-Irish author, poet, essayist, satirist, political pamphlet maker & the Anglican Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland.
He's best remembered for writing the satiric "Gulliver's Travels."
One of his many pen names was Isaac Bickerstaffe!
But, Swift (a Tory) was permanently exiled ("like a rat in a hole") when the Whigs returned to power - right after Queen Anne's death.
Weird Stuff: Swift wrote his own obituary, a year after 1st showing signs of dementia.
Guardians were appointed due to Swift's violent outbursts - with old friends.
Swift, in great pain, tried to rip out his own inflamed left eye!!
Then, Swift spent a whole year with- out saying a word.
But, thankfully, he finally died.
Following his best friend to the grave - a year late.
8. John Partridge published a popular almanac of astrological predictions.
But, Partridge falsely claimed to know the death dates of various church officials!
Swift, using the pen name of Isaac Bickerstaffe, predicted Partridge's death - in late March of that same year (1708)!!
Then, Swift issued a pamphlet stating that Partridge was indeed dead - contrary to Partridge's own rebuttal!
9. Though the planet Venus is usually thought of as Earth's twin - it's actually more like a complete opposite!!
Venus spins backwards, has a day longer than its own year & lacks any seasons!
It's thought to have once being habitable - about a billion years ago!!
10. Librettos (little booklets) are used to mark detailed scene descriptions in operas, ballets or other musicals.
Next: Part 3, Quotations.

Threads (Mick Jackson, 1984)
Cast: Karen Meagher, Reece Dinsdale, David Brierly, Rita May, Nicholas Lane, Jane Hazlegrove, Henry Moxon, June Broughton, Sylvia Stoker, Harry Beeton, Ruth Holden, Ashley Barker, Michael O'Hagan, Phil Vaughan (voice). Screenplay: Barry Hines. Cinematography: Andrew Dunn, Paul Morris. Production design: Christopher Robilliard. Film editing: Donna Bickerstaff, Jim Latham.
Was it because it was a "made-for-TV movie," a label that was once a byword for mediocrity, that I never saw Threads before now? Or was it that I knew what it was about and didn't need to put myself through watching a film that existed to tell me something I already knew: that nuclear war would be unspeakably horrible? But knowing is one thing and seeing is another. Threads is propaganda of the best kind, designed to disseminate truth rather than opinion. Its visceral but wholly credible horrors make criticism impotent, even though as a creative work it's not immune to criticism: There is some clunky dialogue; the narrative voiceover is awkwardly inserted and sometimes sententious; the evocation of a nativity scene near the end is too obvious. But the performances of the unknown actors, the skillful editing of stock footage into vividly staged scenes, and the unrestrained depiction of human suffering and degradation add up to a punch to the gut. Threads is a movie that has to be seen, or ought to be at least by anyone who holds a political or military position and needs to be have what it's trying to tell us engraved on their consciences. And that boils down to a demonstration of something often attributed to, of all people, Nikita Khrushchev: that in the aftermath of a nuclear war, the living would envy the dead.

Health & Wellness
Tumblr media
Health & wellness news Health & wellness, a page that describes the different aspects of wellness and health, with quotes and links to specific resources and news on the matter. Health is the thing that makes you feel that now is the best time of the year. Franklin P. Adams (1881-1960, American journalist, humorist) Health is the greatest of all possessions; a pale cobbler is better than a sick king. Isaac Bickerstaffe In 2015, the population of the United States (U.S.) spent an estimated $3.2 trillion on healthcare costs. However, despite this expenditure, a study by the U.S. National Research Council, published in 2013, showed that Americans die at a younger age and experience more illness and injury than people in other developed countries. Internet news The concept of total wellness recognizes that our every thought, word, and behavior affects our greater health and well-being. And we, in turn, are affected not only emotionally but also physically and spiritually. Greg Anderson As a remedy against all ills; poverty, sickness, and melancholy only one thing is absolutely necessary; a liking for work. Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867, French poet) The health of the people is really the foundation upon which all their happiness and all their powers as a state depend. Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881, British statesman, Prime Minister) The human body has been designed to resist an infinite number of changes and attacks brought about by its environment. The secret of good health lies in successful adjustment to changing stresses on the body. Harry J. Johnson (American medical doctor) Man needs difficulties; they are necessary for health. Carl Jung No time for your health today, will result in no health for your time tomorrow. Irish Proverb (Sayings of Irish origin) Measure your health by your sympathy with morning and spring. If there is no response in you to the awakening of nature - if the prospect of an early morning walk does not banish sleep, if the warble of the first bluebird does not thrill you - know that the morning and spring of your life are past. Thus may you feel your pulse. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862, American essayist, poet, naturalist) Health is a great treasure. It is the richest possession mortals can have. Wealth, honor, or learning is dearly purchased, if it be at the loss of the vigor of health. None of these attainments can secure happiness, if health is wanting. Ellen Gould White What is health and how to keep it in a good balance. The word "health" refers to a state of complete emotional and physical well-being. Healthcare exists to help people maintain this optimal state of health. Good health is central to handling stress and living a long and active life. In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health with a phrase that is still used today. "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." WHO, 1948. In 1986, the WHO further clarified that health is: "A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities."
Tumblr media
Health and preventive care medicine Health can be defined as physical, mental, and social wellbeing, and as a resource for living a full life. It refers not only to the absence of disease, but the ability to recover and bounce back from illness and other problems. Factors for good health include genetics, the environment, relationships, and education. A healthful diet, exercise, screening for diseases, and coping strategies can all enhance a person's health. This means that health is a resource to support an individual's function in wider society. A healthful lifestyle provides the means to lead a full life. Nowadays health can also be considered as the ability of a body to adapt to new threats and infirmities, and that means to be aware that modern science has increased human knowledge of diseases and how they work. Physical wellbeing involves pursuing a healthful lifestyle to decrease the risk of disease. Maintaining physical fitness, for example, can protect and develop the endurance of a person's breathing and heart function, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition. Physical health and well-being also help reduce the risk of an injury or health issue. Examples include minimizing hazards in the workplace, practicing safe sex, practicing good hygiene, or avoiding the use of tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs. Mental health refers to a person's emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing. It is as important as physical health to a full, active lifestyle. It is not only the absence of depression, anxiety, or another disorder, but it also depends on the ability to enjoy life, bounce back after difficult experiences, achieve balance, adapt to adversity, feel safe and secure, achieve your potential. Physical and mental health are obviously linked. If chronic illness affects a person's ability to complete their regular tasks, this may lead to depression and stress, for example, due to money problems. It is important to approach "health" as a whole, that is through a holistic approach. Health should be a good investment, not a bad expenditure. Carl William Brown Health depends on a wide range of factors. People are born with a different mixed range of genes, and in some of them, an unusual genetic pattern can lead to a weak level of health. Environmental factors then play a role. Sometimes the environment alone is enough to impact health. Other times, an environmental trigger can cause illness in a person who is genetically susceptible. Access to healthcare plays a role, but the WHO suggests that the following factors may have a bigger impact on health than this: where a person lives, the state of the surrounding environment, genetics, income, education level, relationships with friends and family. The social and economic environment, including how wealthy a family or community is; the physical environment, including parasites that exist in an area, or pollution levels; the person's characteristics and behaviors, including the genes that a person is born with and their lifestyle choices, all these factors can clearly influence in a good or bad manner our health. Maintaining wellness and an optimal health should be a lifelong, daily commitment. Steps that can help us maximize our health include: a balanced, nutritious diet, sourced as naturally as possible, regular exercising, screening for diseases that may present a risk, learning to manage stress, engaging in activities that provide purpose and connection to others, maintaining a positive outlook and appreciating what you have, defining a value system, and putting it into action. Peak health will be different for each person, and how you achieve wellness may be different from how someone else does. It may not be possible to avoid disease completely, but doing as much as we can to develop resilience and prepare the body and mind to deal with problems as they arise is a step we can all take. Future Scheduling:
There will be no gymnastics at the 2023 European Games. Not to be confused with the European Gymnastics Championships or the European Championships. This is a multisport event which occurs every 4 years and is neither a qualifier for Worlds or the Olympics.
Legal News:
Ivan Kuliak’s appeal of his suspension was partially upheld by the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation review panel. Originally it was ruled that his suspension could be extended by 6 months if the Russian ban extended beyond the 1 year of his initial ban. The review panel found that it was improper to link the two events and that his punishment should be independent of any action taken against the Russian Federation. His ban will now end on May 16, 2023. President Valérie Horyna, who is Swiss, Jane Bickerstaff from Britain and Mexican Edgardo Muñoz Lopez comprised the GEF Appeal Tribunal panel.
Adam AhQuin was removed as volunteer assistant coach at Southern Utah University after he was arrested on domestic and child abuse charges. A safe sport investigation has also started.
Camp Woodward in Pennsylvania faces a second allegation of sexual misconduct by staff.
Historical Research:
Uncle Tim at Gymnastics History has uncovered that there were discussions about removing men’s vault in 1969 as well as a previously unknown medal for Larisa Latynina (USR)

The Paris World Challenge Cup (a FIG Group 3 MAG/WAG apparatus competition) will occur on September 24th and 25. Qualification on the 24th is not expected to be streamed, and the finals on the 25th are expected to be streamed on Sport en France without need of a vpn.

The Tragic Genius of Dustin “Screech” Diamond
By David Himmel
The most intense and realistically human scene in Saved by the Bell came in season 4, episode 20, “Snow White and the Seven Dorks.” It’s where Zack and Lisa discover feelings or raw horniness for each other and kiss. Screech, who has loved Lisa since the days of Good Morning, Miss Bliss, finds out about it and with understandable anger, calls Zack out for it, rips his preppy clothes, and challenges him to fisticuffs. Here, the most put-upon best friend in television history is finally taking a stand putting his megalomanic of a best pal on blast for his egregious betrayal. Zack was never to be trusted. But Screech did trust Zack. He was loyal to a to his own detriment. But not this time.
It’s heavy television. It’s a heavier moment than when the gang confronts drug use at the party in season 3, episode 21, “No Hope with Dope” and initially in season 2, episode 9, “Jessie’s Song”—the one where Jessie gets so excited. Heavier than when the duck dies following the oil spil when crude is found under the Bayside football field in season 3, episode 11, “Pipe Dreams.” And it’s more emotional than Zack and Kelly’s wedding in the 1994 TV movie, Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas.
That was the power of Samuel “Screech” Powers, played lovingly and long by Dustin Diamond who died on Monday following a short battle with cancer. He was forty-four.
I always wanted to be Zack Morris. I envisioned myself as Zack Morris—confident, handsome, clever. My friends even called me Preppy for a time. But let’s be honest; I was always Screech. Skinny, a little odd looking, goofy, and full of love that was often unrequited. More than that, Screech was not just a gag character or a McGuffin for Zack’s shenanigans. Screech was a progressive television character before we knew what that was supposed to be.
Screech and Lisa’s relationship, though never consummated romantically, was an interracial one. And not once did any of us think it was weird for a white guy to pine for a Black girl. The show never really acknowledged Lisa’s race, though, maybe it should have considering she was one of like, two Black characters on the show: Lisa and Ollie the Nerd. Still, we were all rooting for Screech and Lisa to finally get together and win Prom King and Queen, proving that love is not bound by racial divisiveness. A bigger television couples’ win than even Ross and Rachel. Lisa and Screech never happened, of course, which is part of what made Zack’s betrayal so intense. Bros before Lisas, Morris.
And then there was that Lisa Frank folder Screech carried around. The one with the illustration of a woman tilting her sun glasses down to get a better view at the hunk we see in her glasses’ reflection. A conversation bubble says, “Check him out!” I knew that folder in real life. A handful of girls in my junior high school had it. It was a girls’ folder. Or, it was a folder for those who thought that guy was hot. So, did Screech like guys? Was Screech gay? Bisexual, perhaps. Bi-curious at the least?
We knew he loved Lisa. Then he had a healthy relationship with Violet Anne Bickerstaff. But that folder. It was an odd choice. But Screech was odd. So perhaps that’s why props and wardrobe gave it to him. Maybe it was some meta attempt to show Screech’s level of obsession with all things Lisa.
Or, perhaps, they were telling us more about this intelligent, complicated, and interesting character.
Either way, I dug it. Screech always had me thinking… That wasn’t the character’s intended purpose—Screech was no Jessie Pinkman or Skylar White—but that’s what he did for me. And that onus was all on Dustin Diamond.
His post Saved by the Bell years aside—the sex tape, rumors of him being an insufferable prick, stabbing that guy, etc.—Diamond spent thirteen years as Screech Powers. Screech was the clown, but Diamond gave the clown heart, humanity. We never laughed at Screech, we laughed with him. We rooted for him. And when he was shoved in a locker or was attacked by ants while wearing a mascot costume or when he had his heart broken by his best friend, we ached with him.
Screech was always the good guy. His exploits at the behest of his buddy Zack were not of malice or selfishness or greed. He fell in line as a way to bring joy to his friends. Loyalty, laughter, and love. That was Screech. Heh… Screech’s character description belongs written in a script font on faux distressed wood and sold at Target.
We all wanted to be Zack and Kelly. Maybe some of us wanted to be Slater or even Jessie. But we should have wanted to be Screech. Screech was the best of them all. They best of all of us. And that is solely because of Dustin Diamond.
He died too young. Too soon. A comeback may have been in the future. An opportunity for him to do more of what he loved doing—acting. And maybe not as Screech, but as another character that would no doubt be bursting at the seams with compassion, hilarity, and a humanity. Dustin Diamond was due a third act. Or, at the very least, an encore.
