Architectural Finds, 06/24/2023
My walk today was a brief 20 minutes, I was meeting up with a friend from upstate for some chai who had come down the night before to stay with some other friends. We met up at the Chai Spot on Mott St. (which I definitely now recommend) and we relaxed in their backroom lounge with our chai's for 45 min or so. She eventually had to leave to catch her bus back upstate & I walked her to the subway stairs hugged her and said goodbye. Feeling the warm weather on my skin and the caffeine in my veins I decided to walk up Broadway, here were some of the architectural highlights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This cute turret room on the top of the building on the NE corner of Bleecker & Broadway. Doing the smallest ammount of googling I am finding out this was Peter Venkman's (Bill Murray) apartment in Ghostbusters 2???? ok.
It just looks like it would be such a whimsical little tower to hang your hair from, idk.
Building Facts: Built in 1891 as the Manhattan Savings Institution, also known as Bleecker Tower. Architect Stephen Decatur Hatch.
Built in the Romanesque Revival style with arches and ornaments, as well as the red sandstone and signature rough cut stone of this style on the base of the building (definitely why it caught my eye, I love Richardson Romanesque/romanesque revival).
The tower on top eludes my brief internet search, but if anyone has pictures of the inside please direct them to me.

Next up we have this lil copper cutie who looks like it just got a face lift judging by the shiny copper facade on top. It is currently a FootLocker so hopefully they're treating her nice.
Building Facts: (obv) Built in 1889 by Architect Alfred Zucker.
The menacing gargoyles are cute.
(maybe more of an opinion than a fact, but) there used to be a bookstore called Shakepeare's on the bottom floor and the top floors were 1-per-floor studio spaces for artists to live/work in, & I wish that was the case today, not footlocker and high rent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MOVING ON, we've got this pair of cuties. Don't they look like the best of friends holding hands ready to face the world side by side? These guys are 734 (left) and 732 (right) Broadway.
734: Built in 1872 by Architects David & John Jardine in Cast-Iron Neo-Grec style. Until ~2015, the facade had become a rusted brown/black mess until they cleaned and repainted it.
732: Built in 1854 by unknown.
This little building has a complicated past but ill try and summarize the small dig I just did on it. Originally it was a 3.5 peaked-roof building as a set of 3 houses for wealthy sisters (daughters of John Mason) from 732-736 designed by an undocumented architect. It underwent large renovations twice in its life, and one small renovation adding the Treffurth's sign on the roof cornice. The first renovation happened in 1885 by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh (god write a romance novel already would you) and allowed the introduction of E. A. Mac's bookstore to take the place of the earlier saloon on the bottom floor. It was then renovated in 1900 by Bruno W. Berger to the Cast-Iron more or less Renaissance Revival facade we see today.
-
Im going to keep these next ones brief because I'm beginning to lose steam :)
Tumblr media
1 Astor Place
Built in 1883 by Architects Starkweather & Gibbs (they also designed the Potter Building). Brick & Terracotta above Cast-Iron ground floor facade.
Originally it was used as a hotel and boarding house with ground floor stores. The harsh vertical motifs on the exterior caught my eye, and I was drawn in even more by the harmony of the design elements and color choices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10 Astor Place aka 444 Lafayette St
Built in 1876 by Architect Griffith Thomas to the same owner as the above building, Orlando B. Potter, who seemed to have impeccable taste in architecture.
I love the ornate implementation of the painted white Cast-Iron in the arches and pillar ornaments on this one. As well as the eye-popping contrast of the white paint on dark red brick, kind of a juxtaposed take on themes seen in the building above with the way the red and black elements seem to blend in together in harmony.
Tumblr media
21 Astor Place aka Clinton Hall
Built in 1891 by George E. Harney.
Originally a Library for the New York Mercantile Library. I love the classic industrial look its such a strong look while they still tried to give elements of the facade some artistic nuance like in the arched windows and dark banding.
Tumblr media
Only Caught the side of this Collonade building but doing more research on it, it's owned by the Blue Man Group????
Built 1831 by Seth Greer and historically home to family member's of the Astor & Vanderbilt families, it is the oldest building I took note of today.
Tumblr media
And of course, how could I not be drawn into the Cooper Union Foundation building's charm. It stands seemingly so alone in the heart of Manhattan, close to a modern miracle.
Built in 1859 by Frederick A. Peterson in the (what I'm finding now to be called) Rundbogenstil German neo-Romanesque style.
I didn't realize it at the time but this picture also seems to be the back of the building. Still just such ornate and well-balanced design!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTIONS: This house on top of this building and the cute lil mansard moment next to it, which I searched and searched for but I cant seem to remember where it is.
Edit: I found it, there were street signs in the picture whoops. The one with the cottage is 203 E 13th Street also known as Pear Tree Place. And the little guy with the mansard roof is 109 3rd ave, both of them resting above Kiehls 3rd ave.
Tumblr media
DISHONORABLE MENTIONS: This NYU Alumni building. Who designed you, they should be ashamed. What is going on with your offset, unbalanced terraces in the back? Awful. What was the point of all of these different colored brick patches?? Uncomfortable, awful. It looks like a neutral-toned Duplo set.
Built in 1986 and I cant even find the architect so you know they weren't very proud of it.

From naval sources, Cardwell knew of the slaughters by the Jardine family. He wrote to Bowen:
I trust that great care will be taken to prevent the recurrence of such proceedings and I have no doubt that before this Despatch reaches your hands the circumstances under which this loss of life has been incurred will have been fully inquired into and reported on by you.

One of my favourite British artists - David Jones (b 1939) graduated from Liverpool College of Art in 1961 and it was here he first discovered his interest in printmaking. His tutor was the surrealist artist George Jardine. He won a John Moores travelling scholarship and spent time visiting various design studios across Europe. On returning to the UK he worked as assistant to graphic designers Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert. In 1965 -1967 he worked in Japan at Nakamoto International Agency, Osaka.
He returned to the UK and had a busy and successful career working freelance in graphic design, illustration and typography. He also worked as a visiting college lecturer at many of the countries leadings art schools. From 1979 he was a Senior Lecturer at Central Saint Martins (University of The Arts, London). In the last twenty years he has returned to printmaking, in particular linocuts and wood engraving. He is influenced by Outsider art and Folk art. In 1989 he helped set up Raw Vision, a journal of Outsider Art. David is also a keen Semi-pro musician and plays the soprano saxophone. He hand prints his work in small editions and many of the images in his prints come from dreams.

What's your opinion on each beach boy individually?
I adore this question, thank you.
Brian Wilson: My forever boy. Talented, funny, adorable, strong. When I was first getting into the Beach Boys, I was just mainlining Brian interviews and sobbing because of how much I related to him, and he made me feel like I could get through just about anything. His entire story, his outlook, is about finding joy in the simplest things in the darkest times. It's such a beautiful thing to see reflected in someone. I got to see him live a few years ago, and it was overwhelming to be in the same room with him and see so many people just thanking him for his music. I love how unapologetic he is about what he loves and how he expresses it. He puts so much of himself out there in his music that it just reaches through and grabs hold of your heart. It's unmistakably him, from the plaintive loneliness in Pet Sounds to the cheeky weirdness of Love You, because music was always his safe space and the best way he could express himself without anything between you and him. He brings me such joy.
Carl Wilson: An angel. Sweetest boy, sweetest voice, grew into a whole hottie. I feel like I am very close to him as well, we are both kind of conflict-averse and quiet leader types. His voice is magic, and I love the more R&B influence he brings to songs. Wild Honey is one of my favorite albums, and I feel like it has so much of him in it. He is so gentle in life but fiery in the studio, I don't know. I'm always so happy listening to him.
Dennis Wilson: Dennis' songwriting is so impressive to me, there's so much soul and emotion in his voice, and I love the rawness of his vocals paired with the lush, classical beauty of his instrumentation. He went through so much, and I wish he could have gotten more help and time to heal. All the Wilson brothers just break my heart. They deserved the world. (I forgot to say I got to sit in one of his cars at a museum! <3)
Al Jardine: Such a cinnamon roll. I trust him wholeheartedly, like, if Al isn't on your side or doesn't like you, then I don't like you either. He's so supportive and kind and it means so much to me that he and Brian are still so close.
Mike Love: So annoying and frustrating that it almost feels like parody. Every time I come around to him, I find out something else about him that sends me through the roof again! He just should not be around sensitive people, he is hazardous to their health, and sometimes he says things that I just--!!! Despite all that, I love his voice and "Big Sur" and I have an ironic love for how much he tries to shoehorn Transcendental Meditation into everything. Respect the grift! Also "Student Demonstration Time" slaps, I don't care!!!!!!
Bruce Johnston: He's fine. Some of his songs are almost too sweet for me. Points lost for touring with Mike.
David Marks: He got totally shafted early on and led a very hard life, but he is talented and a real sweetheart.
Blondie Chaplin: Such a fun guy! Points gained for touring with Brian.
Ricky Fataar: Really don't know anything about him, sorry. I have just recently gotten to listen to the albums he is on, so I don't know much.
John Stamos: Literally, why are you here. Go away.

January 1, 1809
Edinburgh. Got my best parlour in order, expecting Lord Justice Clerk¹. At 12 Arbuthnot came in, and afterward Colonel Smith. At 2 went out. Met in the street and was introduced to Alexander M'Kenzie², author of “Man of Feeling,” being on the way to his house. Called on Jeffrey³ and handed him a letter. Called on Walter Scott ; on Lord Provost (Mayor). While Arbuthnot and Smith were sitting with me this morning, Lord Justice Clerk called, and was refused by the stupidity of a servant. Wrote Lord Justice Clerk, apologizing, accepting his invitation and enclosing Colonel J.'s letter. At 5 went to dine with Mr. Jardine, an advocate. Delayed a whole hour, not being able to find the house. The coachman more ignorant than myself. Met there Erskine, brother of the Lord Chancellor and of the Earl of Buchan, and heir apparent to the title ; Colonel Alexander Munro ; Madame Munro ; the Colonel has been fifteen years in India, and very lately returned ; the Rev. Mr. Morehead ; Mr. Forbes, son of Sir ——— Forbes ; Madame Bruce, femme de ——— Bruce, son of the traveler. He was confined with the rheumatism, and did not appear. Henry M’Kenzie, advocate, son of the author of the “Man of Feeling.”
1  Charles Hope, Lord Granton (1763-1851), was educated at Edinburgh, admitted an advocate in 1784, and in 1801 was appointed Lord Advocate. In 1804 he was appointed an ordinary Lord of Session and Lord Justice Clerk in the place of Sir David Rae, and assuming the title of Lord Granton, took his seat on the bench on December 6, 1804. On November 12, 1811, he succeeded Robert Blair of Avontoun as Lord President of the Court of Sessions. In December, 1836, he became Lord Justice General. In 1793 Hope married his cousin, Lady Charlotte Hope, second daughter of John, second Earl of Hopetoun, by his third wife, Lady Elizabeth Leslie. Burr's letter of introduction to Lord Justice Clerk was written by A. Cochrane Johnstone, of London, who said : “Permit me to introduce to your Lordship the bearer of this, the celebrated Colonel Burr, with whom our worthy friend, Charles Williamson, was very intimate. His talents, abilities, and amiable qualities will, I am confident, ensure him a place in your esteem. He proposes making a stay of only a few days in Scotland, during which time I have to request that you will render him any attention in your power. He is anxious to have an opportunity of making the acquaintance of the most learned of our profession, and to whom can I apply so well as to you to bring this about?” 2  But it was Henry M’Kenzie, not Alexander, who wrote the novel of this name. He was also the author of “The Man of the World” (1773), “Julia de Roubigné” (1777), etc. Under date of February 12, 1809, Burr wrote to his daughter : “Among the literary men of England 1 have met M’Kenzie, author of the ‘Man of Feeling,’ and Scott, author of the ‘Minstrel.’ I met both frequently, and from both received civilities and hospitality. M’Kenzie has twelve children—six daughters, all very interesting and handsome. He is remarkably sprightly in company, amiable, witty—might pass for 42, though certainly much older. Scott, with less softness than M’Kenzie, has still more animation; talks much, and very agreeably." At this time M’Kenzie was 64 and Scott 38. 3  Lord Francis Jeffrey (1773-1850), founder, and for twenty-six years editor of The Edinburgh Review.

"History is made productive and meaningful if, despite its difference from the present, it informs how people think about their world."
- Alison Landsberg, Engaging the Past: Mass Culture and the Production of Historical Knowledge

About Me
My name is Tombstone and I study the history of science, religion, and death in the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period in Western Europe. I am interested in the intersection of science and religion (mostly Christianity but with special regard for the role of Judaism and Islam in the preservation, translation, and dissemination of ancient thought) from the 1200s, when the first universities were founded, to the 1700s, the dawn of the Scientific Revolution. I study these cultural shifts through the lens of death, dying, and remembrance.

Introduction to Historical European Scientific and Religious Reading Material
This list is taken mostly from my own bookshelf and class syllabi, with some contributions from scholarly journals and other academic sources. While I have read the majority of them, I cannot vouch for everything on this list, and part of academia is using your own critical thinking to determine which side of an argument you fall on. History is brilliantly multi-faceted, largely subjective in the face of an incalculable number of unknowns, and constantly expanding. As such, this list will be periodically updated and modified. Happy reading!

David Jones (b 1939) graduated from Liverpool College of Art in 1961 and it was here he first discovered his interest in printmaking.

With Brian, Carl, Dennis and Mike Love all in the same band and his low key quiet demeanor, he at times takes a back seat in recognition to the rest of his band mates. Born originally in Ohio, Al would eventually spend the majority of his youth in Hawthorne, California where he would end up meeting a young Brian Wilson in his High School years. At first it wasn’t music that brought the two friends together but football as they both were on the high school team.
Eventually Al would learn that not only Brian but his baby brother Carl had talent in music. It would be when both Brian and Al attended college that the two came up with idea of forming a band as they worked out harmony vocals in the college’s music room. Originally Al wanted to push Brian into forming a Folk group because of his love of that genre of music and his love or playing banjo and acoustic guitar. It obviously didn’t work out that way but through the years Al definitely brought a folk influence to the band, the best example of course is the song “Sloop John B” on the “Pet Sounds” album. Al would play stand up bass on the very first Beach Boys’ song “Surfin” before realizing their might not be a stable future in the music business, leaving the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
It’s obvious that Brian Wilson definitely respected Al and his talent as a musician, especially since he was more than happy to allow him back into the band to play his bass parts. For a brief period both Al and his replacement David Marks were in the band together, yet David would leave a short time later and Al would become the band’s rhythm guitar player, harmony vocalist and eventually a lead vocalist on assorted songs, the first being 1964’s “Christmas Day”. From there Al’s voice would be featured notably on songs like “Help Me Ronda” (and Rhonda), “I Know There’s An Answer”, “Lookin’ At Tomorrow (A Welfare Song)”, California Saga : California “, “Lady Lynda”, just to name a few. He’s also proven his talent for taking cover songs from other artists and turning them into great Beach Boys tunes. “Then I Kissed Her”, “Sloop John B” “Cotton Fields”, “Come Go With Me”, and “California Dreamin’” are all great examples. The ability he’s had through the years with his voice to cover many of the songs originally sang by Brian for the live shows was also one of his most vital contributions to the band.
Of course we also can’t forget that in some ways he gets a pass where Mike Love doesn’t. Al definitely was a huge ally to Mike in the mid to late 1970s which put him at odds with Dennis and Carl Wilson by pushing to keep The Beach Boys as a nostalgia act. It’s kind of ironic now that he and Mike no longer are close, and Mike did everything in his power to kick Al out of the band when Carl Wilson got sick in the late 1990s, even bringing David Marks back which Al definitely wasn’t happy about. Al would lose the right to use any part of The Beach Boys name in his concerts which made the late 90s and the following decade a tough time for him personally and professionally. He did however form a touring act with his two sons and Brian’s two daughters (Carnie and Wendy) known as “Al Jardine’s Family And Friends” which did get some great concert reviews. Thankfully the tide has definitely turned for Al.
Over the last decade he has truly been an unsung hero to both The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson as a solo artist. For one thing, his voice may be better now than it ever has been. The man is freaking 80 years old and his voice soars more now than ever. If you need proof just listen to the beautiful song “From There To Back Again” from the 2012 Beach Boys’ reunion album “That’s Why God Made The Radio”, which in my humble opinion is his greatest moment ever as a Beach Boy. That coupled with his excellent work on Brian’s “No Pier Pressure” solo record proves his voice has the ability to make a good Brian Wilson song great. He’s  been a regular in Brian’s touring band since the reunion tour and after, to this day, touring with Brian on his acclaimed “50th Anniversary Pet Sounds” tour, and most recently Brian’s last tour in 2022.
He also released a solo record in 2010 called “A Postcard From California” that is in no way any type of artistic statement, yet hardly a embarrassment either. Through it all Al has proven he can be a class act, especially with the fans, and even though he doesn’t get the recognition that both Brian and even Mike Love still get, he has done more than enough to earn every Beach Boys fan’s respect. Hopefully Brian has some more great songs on the horizon for his angelic voice.
