due to personal reasons (being on undercover brainrot) am once again thinking abt my frontier n badend verses coz in both satoshi takes a more active interest in working to protect various regions & more purposefully offers assistance when he hears about troubles, the only main difference in that regard between the verses being that frontier still sees him travel for the thrill of it & not quite seeking out trouble while badend sees him travel almost primarily To look for troubles to solve

I know I'm probably a weirdo for this, but one day I got to thinking, what if Pokemon was lingually accurate? Like, if characters were named appropriately based on their region? So I actually went through Bulbapedia and compiled a list of every major character's names in other languages. And just in case anyone else was curious, I thought I'd share it.

I'm going from the English base, so I'm majorly not including Unova, Galar, and most of Alola. Ones that are weird or are migrants I give explanations for.

Kanto: Japanese

Red: Same in English and Japanese

Leaf: Same in English and Japanese

Blue: Technically referred to as Green in Japanese since the original games were Red and Green (hence remakes being FireRed and LeafGreen), but is considered Blue internationally and it makes more sense to me (Red picks Charmander, rival picks Squirtle to be better, thus Blue).

French and Chinese use the respective language's variation of the phrase as a base for her name, while Spanish and Italian use Greek words, for "wisdom" and "intelligence" respectively.

Professor Laventon: He's Galarian, so his name is English.

Unova: English The only ones I'm doing here are ones that AREN'T necessarily the English version.

Clay or Yakon: I've heard Clay may play on Japanese businessman tropes, and he has an ancestor in Hisui, so his name could be either of these.

Lacey or Taro: As Clay's daughter, her situation is the same as his.

Alola: English Hawaii is an American state, and there isn't a Native Hawaiian translation of the games, so English is the default language here. But Hawaii does have ties to the East, so I will use some of the Japanese names if they make more sense to me. Most are just slight spelling changes anyhow.

Yo (Elio): Moved from Kanto to Alola, so Japanese name.

Mizuki (Selene): Moved from Kanto to Alola, so Japanese name.

Ma'o (Mallow): Technically her Japanese name is just Mao, but ma'o is the Hawaiian word for Hawaiian cotton and I feel spelling it that way feels better.

Sophocles or Māmane: Both names after the same plant, the Sophora chrysophylla, it's common and local Hawaiian name being māmane.

Hapu'u (Hapu): Hapu'u is her name in Japanese and comes from hāpuʻu, the Hawaaian tree fern.

Molayne or Mullein: Molayne is just a different spelling tbh and I kinda think it looks better.

Skipping Galar; there aren't really a lot of clear foreigners besides Kabu whose name is the same.

Paldea: Spanish and Portuguese I look at both languages because Paldea is based on the Iberian Peninsula and not just Spain. However, with Portuguese, I'm having to look at Brazilian Portuguese, which is not quite the same as European Portuguese, because that's almost all that's on Bulbapedia. I generally choose whether to use Spanish or Portuguese based on if said name is also the same as the English and/or Japanese name. Or default if only one is available. Also uhh my order might be a bit weird here because I didn't get to actually play these games. I kinda assumed you go through the teachers before Gym Leaders, so...yeah. I can re-order it later if that's wrong or confusing.

Florian: From an unknown region, but the same in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.

Juliana: From an unknown region, but the same in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.

Nemo(?): She is noted to not be from Paldea but her home isn't specified so it could be anything. Nemona is her name in English and E. Portuguese, Nemo in Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Thai, Noêmia in B. Portuguese, Nemila in German, Nemola in Indonesian, and Nemi in Italian. The odd ones out are Mencía in Spanish and Menzi in French.

Kissera (Iono): Her B. Portuguese name, comes from "O que será?" apparently meaning "what will it be?", which is closer to the intent behind her name in Japanese (Nanjyamo, name given to an unusually large tree that grows in a particular place; literally meaning "What is it?") and English (Iono, as in "I don't know") than her Spanish name, e-Nigma. Which makes me think of the Riddler.

Laureano or Lauro (Larry): His Spanish and B. Portuguese names respectively. Larry could be a nickname for either though.

Grusha: Actually may be from an unrevealed Russian region as his name is Russian. It's also the same in most languages.

Cayena or Kaya (Rika): Her Spanish and B. Portuguese names respectively. Both come from cayenne, which isn't in her Japanese or English names. Her Japanese name is Chili, and Rika comes from paprika.

Poppy: Her name in English, Japanese, and B. Portuguese as well as German and Indonesian.

Hassel?: From and unknown region so could literally be anything, and all his names are very different.

Ságita or Guita (Geeta): Her Spanish and B. Portuguese names respectively. Supercampeona (Top Champion)

Penny: Actually from Galar, so her English name. Cassiopeia or Casiopea: English and Spanish forms respectively, referencing the constellation.

PokéAni Trivia Tuesday #35

It’s rare that we see a Legendary Pokémon take the spotlight in an episode, but it’s even rarer when it actually gets used in an official Pokémon battle! In the episode where Ash challenges Factory Head Noland for his first match in the Battle Frontier (dub title “The Symbol of Life”), his Charizard faces off against an Articuno that Noland befriended. We all know what an epic battle that was and how Ash & Charizard were victorious against the Legendary bird, thus earning him his first Frontier symbol (The Knowledge Symbol).

Besides being the only Frontier Brain challenge to be dubbed by 4Kids, this episode also marks the first time ever that a Legendary Pokémon has been defeated in a 1-on-1 battle with a non-Legendary Pokémon. Articuno was beat fair and square with no secondary plot that powered-up either Pokémon to be stronger. On a another interesting note, when Articuno was defeated, it did not have any swirly eyes that viewers are used to seeing when Pokémon have fainted from battle in the anime. Articuno’s eyes merely stayed closed when it collapsed to ground. Perhaps it could have still battled if the judge waited a bit longer, and Articuno wasn’t fully beaten? Or maybe adding the swirl trope to the eyes may look too silly for a serious Legendary such as Articuno. (@_@)

Noland = Datsura (Datura) as seen in his cloak which represents the shape of the said flower.  Also known as the plant with the nodding head, as seen in Noland who tends to nod his head!  Also, I think that I wrote in the past about how Datura relates to Noland and how I found this thing on how in some culture it represents knowledge I think?  It’s name also comes from “thorn-apple” which reminds me of Thorton...  I wonder why...  Also, thorns...  I mean, Noland has prickly facial hair and a slightly prickly personality if you’re not used to him.  It looks pretty, but be careful...  Every part of the Datura is toxic!!  Like how Noland doesn’t look like much but he’s actually quite the exceptional trainer!  Also, one species of Datura is known as “Devil’s Trumpet”......  Hmm, Noland, is there something that you’re not telling us?

Anabel = Lila (Lilac) as seen in the lilac colour in her hair, eyes, and clothes.  Speaking of her hair, it has this cute appearance similar to that of a lilac.  And she is smol,,,  lilacs are smol,,,,  but!  Lilacs have a very powerful scent despite their small size!  No, Anabel doesn’t have a strong scent (that we know of) but she is very strong despite being very small.

Spenser = Ukon (Tumeric) as seen in the rich yellow colour in his clothes.  Tumeric has been used in stuff for thousands of years!  Probably why he has this old traditional appearance.  Also, apparently, tumeric is good for you and helps you live long so...  Yeah, old man Spenser.  Also, apparently, its name comes from “meritorious earth” which might hafta do something with his love of nature or something something.

Brandon = Jindai (Cryptomeria) as seen in the colour of his clothes and, like, his hair kind of reminds me of a Cryptomeria seed...  Also, Cryptomeria means “hidden parts” which might have to do with Brandon’s tomb exploring pyramid king ancient stuff.  And maybe something to do with his teams that are full of legendary Pokemon which make me cry a little.  Also, like Brandon, they prickly and soft......

Tucker - Heath (Heath) as seen in the colour of his purply and bodacious hair...  Ahem...  Heath plants are very stress tolerant, kind of like how Tucker is able to perform amazing battles even in the sight of piles of trainers in the Battle Dome!  Also, they serve as hosts to some butterflies, prolly why he has that weird thing on his back??  I don’t know.

Greta = Kogomi (Ostrich Fern) as seen in her hair!  Which looks like!  A baby fern!  When it’s all curled up!  I think that the sprouts are more specifically referred to as “Kogomi” so like, yeah, it’s fitting.  Also!  Ferns represent eternal youth!  Greta is this young gal, and she’s keeping active with fitness stuffs...  She’ll prolly have that adorable face for as long as she lives...  It is also a colony forming plant!  I mean, she basically has a huge follower group of Black Belt trainers in the Battle Arena...

Lucy = Azami (Thistle) as seen in her purple stuffs and the sharp points in her design...  Pointy heels, pointy hair, pointy eyes, pointy belt, her design is mixed with Seviper who is also pointy...  You have to be careful when planting them!  They can help your crops, but can be bad for the livestock sometimes!  After all...  Sometimes they be poisonous...  Like Seviper...  Also, it represents bravery and endurance, kind of like how Lucy braved storms and trampled flowers to get where she is...  Also, the purple represents nobility, hence the Pike Queen...

i feel like it doesn’t get talked about enough how datsura, the first frontier brain that satoshi battled, was friends w/ an articuno   ( i’m not calling it a freezer here sorry subs ) ,  & when given the choice of getting to battle any of datsura's pkmn, satoshi was like   “ psh Obv im battling the god here ”   & then threw a fire lizard at it.

but mostly how a frontier brain was just casual buds w/ a god bird.

but also, considering that alongside jindai's whole thing w the regi & lila's being a kind of psychic & other things brains have going on that i cant name off the top of my head at 3am, satoshi rather fits in among them as a frontier brain candidate, huh

while satoshi never retires in the traditional sense, he does gradually move away from the competitive battling scene, at least as his prime focus. he still participates in the odd tournament because he's a battle-junkie, & he defends whatever title he has & fights to keep whatever he earns, but he's no longer chasing regional champion titles ( though he might be convinced to take up a kanjoh elite four role ) . while his focus becomes primarily split between travel & being alola's champion for as long as he can maintain he title, to satisfy both the itch for something new & for unexpected battles he eventually finally takes up enishida's still standing offer of being a kanto frontier brain.

satoshi's frontier facility is called the battle stadium, his trainer class being stadium champ.     the stadium is the conference-standard size of most league affiliated stadiums because he expects to face every kind of trainer & wants the environment to accommodate for the more extreme power cases.

there was a spot not too far from masara town that was spacious but barely surviving, so satoshi settled on it for his location   —   close to home & thus close to every importance he had.     you have to pass through masara town to get to satoshi's battle stadium, so you'll often get townsfolk with free time tagging along to watch "their satoshi" battle.

because you have to go through masara town to get to the battle stadium, satoshi's not always there.     often he comes back into town to either help hanako with the restaurant or help ookido at the institute with whatever he might need   ( usually it's another set of hands to take care of the pokémon ) .

if he's neither at the stadium nor in town, it's either because he's been called over to another town or region ( most likely alola ) , or because he's been struck by another restless case of wanderlust & needed to roam for a few months. satoshi leaves a message with ookido & hanako to send trainers on their way if they come for the frontier but get their number so he can give a heads up when he's on his way back.     if the town's close by or the matter in another region is resolved & he's about to be on his way back anyway, he has hanako set them up at the house inn until he gets there, since the nearest pokémon center would be a hassle to go to. he sometimes tweaks the rules, though, & if he runs into someone trying to clear the frontier anywhere else in kanto, & they feel up to facing off against satoshi already, he pulls a few strings to reserve the biggest stadium available within a day's travel ; nobody ever said the battle needs to take place in the frontier facility, after all.

when satoshi is at the stadium but not battling, he's doing maintenance, both on the stadium & the surroundings  ;     the stadium is huge & he's often the only one there, & the land used to be barely holding on, it's why he picked the spot, but after assistance & advice from his mama & other local greenthumbs the place is green & lush with plenty of wild pokémon around.     hanako sometimes comes by when she has the time & the two of them tend to the plant life that hasn't yet gotten to the point of self-sufficiency.

he gets pokémon to help with technical maintenance sometimes   ( in particular his grass / flying / psychic / ghost / electric types )   but for the most part it's solo grunt work.     he finds a pleasant meniality in repairing the field after battles, & checking up on the facility's functions in the off time keeps him busy.     he gets back in touch with citron & citron does the bulk of mentoring satoshi in facility maintenance, with advice pulled from datsura & jindai.     satoshi & citron sometimes facetime while they're both working maintenance on their respective places, citron with his gym & satoshi with his stadium.     for years, satoshi remains ambivalent about visiting kalos without something to do there because of lingering crisis memories, so usually citron visits him & they catch up while working together.     sometimes they   ( read: satoshi )   get distracted & have a battle in the middle of maintenance & end up making work for themselves.

as frontier brain, just as in any other position, satoshi battles fully all out, pulling no punches, right from the start.     he never goes easy on anyone.     he chooses whichever pokémon want to battle the most that day regardless of typing, always 3v3 battles for the first attempt & 6v6 for all following. while not actively in the competitive battle scene anymore, he's still satoshi & his pokémon are still his pokémon & very few people ever make it past him within the battle stadium, & only one or two people make it past him on the first challenge within the first decade or so.

the symbol he hands out is called the aura symbol, nodding to lucario having become his secondary go-to battle partner & their strengthened bond, & it has a pikachu-tail-shaped lightning bolt on it.

Flowers

     Noland’s Japanese name is Datsura, after the Datura flower!  The spread of the flower reminds me of Noland’s coat...  Oh, and every single part of the plant is very toxic!  Also, a relevant quote, I think!

“ The knowledge of how to properly use the plant Datura in the people’s quest for enlightenment and contact with the spirit world helped the Chumash people better understand the many gifts of wisdom and peace offered by Chingichnich.”

     The Datura flower is a symbol of knowledge, enlightenment, and the passage of time to these people!

     Also, with the right knowledge, they were able to use this plant properly in their ceremonies!  ALSO, with the right knowledge, the Datura seeds can be used as an anti-inflamatory, anthelmintic, and analgesic!

     `u` I’m bad at making sense and putting things in a good order, but here I am!  Long story short, I’m trying to reason why Noland’s Japanese is Datura!
