Astronomers used three of NASA's Great Observatories to capture this multiwavelength image showing galaxy cluster IDCS J1426.5+3508. It includes X-rays recorded by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in blue, visible light observed by the Hubble Space Telescope in green, and infrared light from the Spitzer Space Telescope in red. This rare galaxy cluster has important implications for understanding how these megastructures formed and evolved early in the universe.
How Astronomers Time Travel
Letā€™s add another item to your travel bucket list: the early universe! You donā€™t need the type of time machine you see in sci-fi movies, and you donā€™t have to worry about getting trapped in the past. You donā€™t even need to leave the comfort of your home! All you need is a powerful space-based telescope.
But letā€™s start small and work our way up to the farthest reaches of space. Weā€™ll explain how it all works along the way.

This animation illustrates how fast light travels between Earth and the Moon. The farther light has to travel, the more noticeable its speed limit becomes.
The speed of light is superfast, but it isnā€™t infinite. It travels at about 186,000 miles (300 million meters) per second. That means that it takes time for the light from any object to reach our eyes. The farther it is, the more time it takes.
You can see nearby things basically in real time because the light travel time isnā€™t long enough to make a difference. Even if an object is 100 miles (161 kilometers) away, it takes just 0.0005 seconds for light to travel that far. But on astronomical scales, the effects become noticeable.

Within our solar system, lightā€™s speed limit means it can take a while to communicate back and forth between spacecraft and ground stations on Earth. We see the Moon, Sun, and planets as they were slightly in the past, but it's not usually far enough back to be scientifically interesting.
As we peer farther out into our galaxy, we use light-years to talk about distances. Smaller units like miles or kilometers would be too overwhelming and weā€™d lose a sense of their meaning. One light-year ā€“ the distance light travels in a year ā€“ is nearly 6 trillion miles (9.5 trillion kilometers). And thatā€™s just a tiny baby step into the cosmos.

The Sunā€™s closest neighboring star, Proxima Centauri, is 4.2 light-years away. That means we see it as it was about four years ago. Betelgeuse, a more distant (and more volatile) stellar neighbor, is around 700 light-years away. Because of lightā€™s lag time, astronomers donā€™t know for sure whether this supergiant star is still there! It may have already blasted itself apart in a supernova explosion ā€“ but it probably has another 10,000 years or more to go.

What looks much like craggy mountains on a moonlit evening is actually the edge of a nearby, young, star-forming region NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. Captured in infrared light by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on NASAā€™s James Webb Space Telescope, this image reveals previously obscured areas of star birth.
The Carina Nebula clocks in at 7,500 light-years away, which means the light we receive from it today began its journey about 3,000 years before the pyramids of Giza in Egypt were built! Many new stars there have undoubtedly been born by now, but their light may not reach Earth for thousands of years.

This stunning image by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope features the spiral galaxy NGC 5643. Looking this good isnā€™t easy; 30 different exposures, for a total of nine hours of observation time, together with Hubbleā€™s high resolution and clarity, were needed to produce an image of such exquisite detail and beauty.
Peering outside our Milky Way galaxy transports us much further into the past. The Andromeda galaxy, our nearest large galactic neighbor, is about 2.5 million light-years away. And thatā€™s still pretty close, as far as the universe goes. The image above shows the spiral galaxy NGC 5643, which is about 60 million light-years away! That means we see it as it was about 60 million years ago.
As telescopes look deeper into the universe, they capture snapshots in time from different cosmic eras. Astronomers can stitch those snapshots together to unravel things like galaxy evolution. The closest ones are more mature; we see them nearly as they truly are in the present day because their light doesnā€™t have to travel as far to reach us. We canā€™t rewind those galaxies (or our own), but we can get clues about how they likely developed. Looking at galaxies that are farther and farther away means seeing these star cities in ever earlier stages of development.

The farthest galaxies we can see are both old and young. Theyā€™re billions of years old now, and the light we receive from them is ancient since it took so long to traverse the cosmos. But since their light was emitted when the galaxies were young, it gives us a view of their infancy.

This animation is an artistā€™s concept of the big bang, with representations of the early universe and its expansion.
Comparing how fast objects at different distances are moving away opened up the biggest mystery in modern astronomy: cosmic acceleration. The universe was already expanding as a result of the big bang, but astronomers expected it to slow down over time. Instead, itā€™s speeding up!
The universeā€™s expansion makes it tricky to talk about the distances of the farthest objects. We often use lookback time, which is the amount of time it took for an objectā€™s light to reach us. Thatā€™s simpler than using a literal distance, because an object that was 10 billion light-years away when it emitted the light we received from it would actually be more than 16 billion light-years away right now, due to the expansion of space. We can even see objects that are presently over 30 billion light-years from Earth, even though the universe is only about 14 billion years old.

Our James Webb Space Telescope has helped us time travel back more than 13.4 billion years, to when the universe was less than 400 million years old. When our Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launches in a few years, astronomers will pair its vast view of space with Webbā€™s zooming capabilities to study the early universe in better ways than ever before. The universe is still expanding at an accelerating rate, but it may have slowed down recently compared to a few billion years ago, early results from the most precise measurement of its evolution yetĀ suggestedĀ Thursday. Ever since that unfortunate night, I have never felt the same mentally nor physically. A constant demonic voice mocking my every move and slowly driving me towards insanity, flashes of a dark entity remain stuck and impossible to get out of my mind, making me want gouge my eyes out to escape through death. Sometimes i dont even recognize myself in the mirror, just noticing each and every one of the changes in my physical apperance as well as my behavior and I think if others noticed them too or do am I the old me to them? or have I never actually changed and my mind can somehow create physical forms of different versions of me on its own?
- The night of the incident
I slowly stirr awake in the middle of the night due to strange noises my ears keep picking up, rubbing my eyes with the back of my hand I glance out the window to see nothing but pitch-black ahead of me. The soft moonlight being the only available source of light pouring into the room, my eyes scan the dark room for a possible source behind the strange noises. Its almost like whispering but not human whispers in particular, almost like a demonic voice... yeah no, demons dont exist so there no such possibility. Just to be sure Im not going completely insane I do a double check but now looking harder into the dark to try and justify the source of the noise is nothing harmless.
Thats until I see something dark looming in the corner of my room.
It appears to be a shadow but with a dark and demonic energy radiating off it, my eyes scan the whole silhouette and get stuck on a pair of brigh red eyes staring down at me becomes imprinted in my mind permanently which sends a cold chill down my whole body, making me rise in awareness and fear, my body immediately waking and becoming completely stiff, my abilty to move vanishing from my grasp of control. The dark shadow figure starts to step closer to me and my instincts kick in, subconsciously backing away from the proximity of the red-eyed creature as it stands at the foot of it. "W-who are you?" I shakingly breath out, my mind becoming consumed with fear and theories that this could possibly be the end of my life.
The red-eyed figure doesnt make a sound or a single move, my breathing now labored and heavy as it continues to stare down at my shaking form. Feeling completely vulnarble and defendless, itā€™s like theres no escape and I've been trapped, even cornered in the dark depths of my mind. "Agite... Tenebrae... Abyssi..." I hear a faint demonic whisper, identical to the ones I've heard before and realize where its coming from. Suddenly I get a shock down my whole body, almost as if a feeling of being possesed or something possibly entering my soul and attaching itself to it.
I convince my overthinking mind its nothing and Im just imagining things now, this is not real. Demons dont exist and they surely can't possess you, right? it cant be real, its not. Shaking my head to throw away any possible negative thoughts left behind and lay my head back down on my pillow, attempting to sleep of the demonic energy I still feel coursing through my veins. My mind manages to slowly drift off to sleep, my eye lids falling heavy as I slip into unconsciousness but the demonic whispers still remaining surrounding the shell of my ears.
- A month after the incident - Present day
A sudden snap of Mattā€™s fingers in front of my face kicks me out of the negative energy in my mind, him giving me an unamused expression and sighing. ā€œYou seriously werenā€™t paying attention again?ā€ He annoyingly huffs, his lips becoming a thin line as his arms cross over his chest. ā€œIā€™m sorry, I was just-ā€œ while I am in the middle of my sentence and want to explain myself, the demonic whispers cut me off and start whispering in my ear until I look around and see him. The red-eyes creature. No matter how hard I want to take my eyes away from him, they just refuse to move alongside with my body. Just becoming frozen all of a sudden, ā€œWhat? Are you good?ā€ He stammered visibly shadowed with concern, his eyes darting around the room to find the spot my eyes are stuck on but is met with a simple empty room.
ā€œWhat are you staring at?ā€ He pondered, still in desperate search to find something I could possibly be staring at with such horror contouring my features. My breath starts to become more deep and shaky, the same feeling I felt coursing through my veins every time it appears, itā€™s almost like itā€™s making its appearance known before hand. Matt finally snaps me back to reality, jerking one of my shoulders to give him a response to his worried questions, when I look at Mattā€™s face and back where it was standing. Itā€™s gone. Itā€™s not there anymore. ā€œWhere did it go?ā€ I mumbled with a trembling bottom lip, becoming tense and more aware of my surroundings. ā€œWhat do you mean by ā€˜where did it goā€™ ? Youā€™re fucking freaking me out Eli.ā€ He inquired, still anxiously looking around before moving closer to me. Immediately noticing me tense up for some reason he doesnā€™t have the knowledge of and I just wouldnā€™t speak about it.
ā€œItā€™s fucking not there anymore! Itā€™s gone, again!ā€ I clutch Mattā€™s arm into my chest, seeking any comfort and safeness I could get a grasp on. The whispers start again, this time approaching me closer until I feel a faint icy breath breathe down my neck which makes me flinch. ā€œĒØįølēŹƒ-tÅ« yĒ«ur crēāį¹­År, ĒLizaŹŠĘƒthā€¦ā€ my hands immediately go to cover my ears, the satanic words echoing in my head and bouncing off every wall, almost delivering me a headache. Under my breath I keep begging it to stop, to release me from the hellish cage itā€™s trapped me in against my will just to torment and demolish all thatā€™s left of my soul that it hasnā€™t destroyed yet. My mental health wasnt the best before and it just got worse after, I reached out for help to everyone I could but they either called me schizophrenic or ā€˜completely gone off the rockersā€™ by professionals, refusing to help me and ignore the actual issue.
ā€œIs it this again? Seriously Eli, you have to stop scaring me like that!ā€ He argues, becoming slightly annoyed. No matter how much I tell him about this mister lurking in the shadows, he just says ā€˜you need to get some professional help or go to a psychiatristā€™ but when I tell him the stories regarding the ā€˜getting professional helpā€™ that they ignore me and donā€™t believe demons actually have a possibility of existing. ā€œYou didnā€™t believe in this demon shit and always denied it, why do you suddenly act like you got possessed by a damn demon or something?ā€ In that moment it hits me, the realization and theory of being actually possessed by a demon hits my head and if weā€™re an object I would possibly get a concussion.
ā€œIā€™m not! Itā€™s just thatā€¦ oh, forget it. Itā€™s gone now so it doesnā€™t matter.ā€ I state, taking a deep breath to wash away all of the emotions Iā€™ve been feeling at once in a single moment. Itā€™s shocking how much my body can take and has taken ever since it appeared in my life, or does it? Maybe my mind likes to think and make it seem like Iā€™m doing good but in reality Iā€™m loosing my mind completely? When is it going to end? How do I make it end? Questions rise in my head as I start to overthink and get my anxiety to an impossible level. ā€œEli, what the fuck has been happening with you? You seem completely psychotic like those possessed girls in horror movies.ā€
ā€œI-I donā€™t know what I am at this point, please just go home and stay safe. Iā€™ve scared you enough already I donā€™t want to give you a heart attackā€ I breathe out, gesturing for him to go away as I my ears perk up with the demonic soft whispers coming back, the dark figure standing right in front of me. I immediately cover my ears as the whispers get louder and louder, suddenly I feel a pair of cold hands wrap around my neck and pure force starting to pull me upwards into the air. I become short on breath as Matt freaks out and quickly runs over to my body in the air, now being face to face with the black figure. My arms immediately attempt to remove the arms off my neck for more air but it only tightens its grip, Matt pulls at my feet but itā€™s not much affective. The red gloomy eyes staring into my soul and twisting my insides with the dark energy possessing my body.
The world around me becomes silent and I canā€™t hear whats happening around me. ā€œĒØo ĒƒĆ dĆŖr ČÆf įøoom, Ź”ou Ƀhall kjĆømbāń Ź”o Źƒiln ĒŖne ČÆf įøhe Ź”eįø„ples ČÆf įČÆvƦr lĒŸv or Ź”e ļæ½ļæ½Ć¦pt Ēn įøŸi Źƒhyād Ē·ÄrtĒ¤, ČÆy Ź—hĒÆice ElizĒžbeth. ȶime Ƀ is spiraling ČÆutā€¦ā€ the sentence constantly keeps being repeated until my ears start to bleed but I donā€™t feel blood coming out of my ears, some kind of cold black goop starts to escape through my ears as I finally get released. Falling back onto the ground with a loud thud and coughing hysterically, the pain and bruises spreading across my body as well as deep purple marks saturate my neck. I feel this sudden urge, something driving me up to my breaking point, willing to do anything to escape this hell.
Matthew quickly runs over to me, examining my body and the bruises left as horror and concern fill his features. ā€œA-are you okay? Are you bleeding anywhere?- oh fuck!ā€ He stammered, noticing the mysterious black goop coming out of my ears. His eyes were so focused on my body he didnā€™t notice it at first, seeking as if he couldnā€™t handle all of this happening at once and neither was I but he was scared out of his mind when I was left with no emotions in my face. My mind backtracks to the demonic words spoken to me and somehow I feel I know what to do, I donā€™t feel like myself anymore. Itā€™s like Iā€™m some kind of puppet in a show being controlled on how Iā€™m supposed to act, I pick myself up and walk towards the kitchen while ignoring the concerned questions falling from Mattā€™s mouth.
I canā€™t believe Iā€™m actually doing this but I canā€™t live like this anymore, he follows behind me and into the kitchen. My body starts to almost move on its own as if someone else had full control over it, reaching into the drawer where all of my knifes are kept and pick up the sharpest blade I own. Rising it into the air and turning to face Matthew, his anxiety immediately spikes to ungodly levels as he puts his now trembling hands. ā€œWhat are you doing with that? Elizabeth, put it down!ā€ Desperate demands leave his mouth in attempt to make me out down the possible weapon in my possession but I donā€™t listen, as much as I donā€™t want to do it, I might be my only way of escaping.
I charge at Matthew and stab him in the chest multiple times as hysteric cries leave my mouth while he screams bloody. His blood squirts all over my clothes and stain them, he falls to the ground and quickly I jump on top of him to weight him down and deliver a stab to immobile his arms, more blood covers our clothes, faces and the floor all together as I continue to cry out apologizes and explanations. ā€œIā€™m sorryā€¦ I have to do this, Iā€™m so sorry, Matt Iā€™m sorry but I have toā€¦ā€ I cry out as blood and tears run my cheeks, to end the miserable pain he is experiencing I swing high into the air, gripping the handle of the bloody knife with both of my hands before apologizing for the last time and plunge the knife through his head which kills him in an instant.
My hands finally detach from the knife and immediately go up to my face, wiping off the blood and pouring tears from my face. Loud sobs fall from my mouth at what I have done, I just killed my best friend. Out of pure cold blood I killed my best friend, I-Iā€™m a monster, a psychopath and everything fucked up. I am the demonā€¦ the demonic figure whispers another sentence in the weird language it has been using ever since trying to communicate to me but now it sounds more evil, like curses stuck to my name by the black shadow and following me around anywhere I go. ā€œĒŖne lĒ»st stȅp ĒµhĒµn ɓe dĒæne, ȵaM ɃĒæĢƒe ȅt Ƀe ĒµhĒµe ȶĒæ Ē·ČÆrld Č©free, hāv ĒµŹŠ¾įø tɼČÆ įøon sĒælf É“Ēæw. įø”dĒæn įø„esÄ«į¹­Č…te, ȅLÄ«zĒbeth.ā€
The same feeling of knowledge runs down my spine, realizing what Iā€™ll have to do next in order to be set free. My hands go back and take the knife out of Matthewā€™s dead body and line the sharp tip with where my heart lies, I close my eyes shut and with one swing I plunge the cold bloody knife into my heart. My body falling down next to Matthewā€™s already dead one, hearing the faint sirens of police in the distance as I slip into unconsciousness but by the time they make it to the kitchen, my body disappeared and only with the bloody knife left on the ground. It was evident two people have been killed in the process regarding the blood bath that was created but no matter how long or how hard they searched for my body, it was just gone. Almost as if a dark entity dragged it down with them to the deepest pits of hellā€¦

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescopeā€™s flight harness is transferred from the mock-up structure to the spacecraft flight structure.
Your Body is Wired Like a NASA Space Telescope. Sort Of.
If our Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope were alive, its nervous system would be the intricate wiring, or ā€œharness,ā€ that helps different parts of the observatory communicate with one another. Just like the human body sends information through nerves to function, Roman will send commands through this special harness to help achieve its mission: answering longstanding questions about dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanets, among other mind-bending cosmic queries.Ā 
Romanā€™s harness weighs around 1,000 pounds and is made of about 32,000 wires and 900 connectors. If those parts were laid out end-to-end, they would be 45 miles long from start to finish. Coincidentally, the human bodyā€™s nerves would span the same distance if lined up. Thatā€™s far enough to reach nearly three-fourths of the way to space, twice as far as a marathon, or eight times taller than Mount Everest!Ā

Over a span of two years, 11 technicians spent time at the workbench and perched on ladders, cutting wire to length, carefully cleaning each component, and repeatedly connecting everything together.Ā Ā 
Space is usually freezing cold, but spacecraft that are in direct sunlight can get incredibly hot. Romanā€™s harness went through the Space Environment Simulator ā€“ aā€Æmassive thermal vacuum chamber ā€“ to expose the components to the temperatures theyā€™ll experience in space. Technicians ā€œbakedā€ vapors out of the harness to make sure they wonā€™t cause problems later in orbit. Ā

Technicians work to secure Romanā€™s harness to the interior of the spacecraft flight structure. They are standing in the portion of the spacecraft bus where the propellant tanks will be mounted. Ā 
The next step is for engineers to weave the harness through the flight structure in Goddardā€™s big clean room, a space almost perfectly free of dust and other particles. This process will be ongoing until most of the spacecraft components are assembled. The Roman Space Telescope is set to launch by May 2027.Ā

Physics Friday: WTF is Dark Energy/Dark Matter? (Part 1)

This equation is surprisingly the best representation of what we are doing with dark energy and dark matter. The equations we are using to figure out the nature of the universe are quite literally 'not adding up'.
When we have a situation where we encounter a missing number we are faced with three scenarioes:
Our model is wrong and we fucked up, physics is over
Our model works, but it's not complete. There are situations where it doesn't apply, and we are seeing an example of it
Our model is simply missing a few terms
Scenario 1 would imply that basic physics such as Newton's laws of motion and gravity are just plain wrong. Which is ... well ... a bit difficult to try and prove.
Scenario 2 implies that there is a more fundamental theory that underlies our current one. While it is not off the table, it can be difficult to find a theory for just one or two specific phenomena.
Scenario 3 is like 2, but it's a bit 'softer', what we're doing is just adding an extra number to balance out the equation and then trying to answer "What does this number mean"?
By Occam's razor, we can go with option 3, as it's simpler, and also appears to be more correct than a complete model change.
Dark Matter and Galaxies
Our galaxy is like the solar system in the sense that there is a large object in the centre surrounded by a bunch of stuff moving around that centre.
The difference between the two is the ratio between the central mass and the mass of the rest of the system.
If you combined all of the planets in the solar system together, it would still be less massive than the Sun.
This means we can easily calculate how the planets move around the Sun. As the motions of the other planets don't really affect that motion all too much. And thus we can use Kepler's 3rd Law:

If you combined all of the stars in the galactic 'orb' surrounding the centre, you find that it would be much heavier than the black hole in the centre.
This means you have to account for a more spread out mass as you change your distance from the centre of the galaxy.
The further you are from the centre of the galaxy, the more stuff there is beneath you i.e. there's more stuff closer to the core than you. We have to calculate gravity taking this mass, and the radius to it, into account.
Thankfully, we have methods that can calculate this much easier. And we can use this to figure out our orbital velocity as a function of distance from the centre.
So let's try and calculate things! Take a galaxy, measure it's mass distribution independent of orbital mechanics, and find the orbital velocity!

What we get is the graph above. In a normal universe, we expect our orbital velocity to increase near the core as more stuff gets added to the mass pulling us in. It then peters out as gravity looses it's strength.
What we actually see is that the orbital velocity takes a lot longer to peter out. If Newton's Laws/General Relativity are working how they should, this means that there must be a lot more mass in the galaxy.
What's worse is that this mass is much more evenly distributed. And not just that, but we cannot see it i.e. it does not interact with electromagnetic waves (light).
Hence we label this weird matter 'dark', because we can't see it and it helps us account for the disparity in the equation.
Next time I'll go into what we think dark matter actually is.
Dark Energy and Einstein's Blunder
General Relativity is one of the most backed-up theories in all of physics. The original conception of the theory comes from the Einstein Field Equations (EFEs):

We can safely ignore all of the fancy jargon symbols. What's important to us is what's missing.
When Einstein was playing around with his equations, he made an error. This error led him to missing a part in his equation. And thus he added an additional term to the EFEs:

This capital lambda term (Ī›) helped balance his erronious equation.
Eventually, Einstein figured out that this was a mistake, a mistake so big that he called it his 'Biggest Blunder'. It turns out that the EFEs don't require Ī› to actually work.
A few decades later, in the 1990s, researchers were trying to use the principles of general relativity to figure out the expansion of spacetime. Thanks to Edwin Hubble, we knew that space was expanding, but we didn't know how it was expanding.
The difficulty is that both the curvature and the amount of energy in the universe affected the expansion of the universe. This is dictated by the Friedmann equations:

Where the a's are the universe's scale factor, i.e. the current 'size' of the universe. The two p's are the mass and energy densities in the universe.
Using measurements of Type Ia Supernovae (you will see a topic on this in the future as I've done research into this), two teams of researchers were able to determine that the expansion rate of the universe was accelerating! Something completely unexpected.
This would require us adding an additional term to the equation involving our suspicious little friend:

This Ī› variable, called the cosmological constant, can be propagated up the mathematical derivation chain to show that Einstein's 'mistake' was actually the correct equation all along!
The cosmological constant acts a energy density term that exists outside of our current understandings of the matter and energy in our universe. And because it's outside of our understanding, we call it 'dark' energy - because, just like dark matter, we can't see it.
It's a type of energy that isn't represented by any of the fundamental forces. What's more is that it is constant, which means as the universe expands, more gets added. And even more is that this energy density is negative, suggesting even that the universe is not a vaccum.
This discovery landed three researchers from both teams the Nobel prize in physics. One of the laureates includes the vice chancellor of my very own university, Brian Schmidt. Doxxing myself aside, this is a fact that neither me, nor my university, will shut up about.
In another part, I'll talk about what this dark energy could be and what an accelerating expansion of the universe could mean.
Conclusion
So despite the names, dark energy and dark matter are actually two different things that have two different sets of properties purposes (at least that's what we think). The names simply derive from the same method of using constants to help make our equations work better with reality.
It's always possible that we are wrong and there is a more fundamental equation that helps us understand these things. But that's a task for the future.
