Dannymay 2023 Prompt Poll

Believe it or not, it is time to start polling for the Dannymay 2023 calendar!

For those who don't know, Dannymay is a spin-off from the longstanding Phanniemay prompt challenge where artists, writers, and creatives alike try to challenge themselves to complete as many prompts in May as they can. Whether you just complete one day or the whole calendar, that is up to you!

Overshadowed - Long ass (140K) College AU, No One Knows, heavy angst, mystery w/ horror elements, mostly happy ending, but I also left it a bit open/ambiguous. I MIGHT write a sequel one day. Everything's Fine (And the Boss is Totally Not a Cryptid) - Outsider POV, intern gets hired at Vlad Co., shenanigans ensue. Oh so many Dracula references. H(a)unted - Weird, angsty little Ghost Hunter Danny AU. Separate Danny and Phantom. ALT ending. I have some ideas percolating to continue off the alternate ending. The Hazards of Being Hot High AF - Shippy Popular Psychology (Jazz/Dash) oneshot I found in my fics folder. Jazz visits Dash in the hospital after a football injury. Elementary, My Dear Fenton - Ecto-Implosion fic. A goofy comedy-mystery where Danny and the trio try to track down who left an anonymous gift in his locker. They get WAY too into it.

WIPs:

Not So Bitter Reunions - AU, canon divergence, badger cereal. The college reunion goes decidedly less off the rails than in canon, leading to some nefarious consequences. I'm just kind of vibing with this one. High School's a Beach - **AGIT SPOILERS** Dan's in high school. This one is so very unserious, but I think I've got a few more chapters left in me. Needs Must (When the Devil Drives) - Canon divergence. AU. Vlad and Harriet reconnect at the college reunion, but since Vlad's technically an evil spirit, he's adversely impacted by things like salt, windchimes, running water, etc. Bad News (Vlad/Harriet) shipfic. I just...I think they're neat. Bearer of Bad News - Post Phantom Planet (not AGIT compliant). Bad News fic because I have an illness and these two live in my head rent free. The GIW enlist Harriet's help in preventing Ghost King Danny from destroying the earth.

Drabbles/Ficlets:

DannyMay 2022 - I don't remember any of these being particularly good, but they do exist. I very much did not last the entire month. Drabble Dump from Tumblr asks - this is just what it sounds like. Though, in general, I'll probably start trying to post oneshots and/or collect the separate, individual Tumblr ask ficlets on this post now instead of just clumping them in a drabble dump on ao3. Monsters Don't Exist - horror vibes. AU. Vlad didn't peace out after the accident and he's keeping his enemies (Maddie and Jack) close. Jazz suspects their babysitter, Uncle Vlad, is more dangerous than everyone else in the family seems to think. Cheese Melt ficlet - Outsider POV. Dani has a parent-teacher interview. Cheese Melt ficlet #2 - Dani doesn't like the toy she got at Nasty Burger. Vlad gets her a new one. Badger cereal ficlet - No one knows AU. Danny works as a cashier and Vlad accidentally outs his supervillain indetity by infodumping to him when Danny makes idle customer-servicey smalltalk.

I'm not going to list out all my filenames and ideas, don't worry lol. But I do have a couple (*cough* couple hundred *cough*) ideas percolating or half written in my fics folder, so that is a thing. 1. How many works do you have on Ao3?

Thirty-six as of now! Most of them are still from events (I put all the filled prompts in one work per event, don’t @ me), but when I really like one of these I post it as a stand-alone :) and I have a few fics outside events too! Woo!

2. What's your total Ao3 word count?

132,746 as of right now, but I’ll still finish Ectober so that’ll change quickly. (and as I said before, some fics I post "twice", in the event's work, and as a stand-alone)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Danny Phantom almost exclusively, the exception are the CrossOvers :p

I love The Sandman and Supernatural ones. I’m into DPxDC as well.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Seven Ways to Summon the Ghost King (1,187 kudos): Seven different ways in which a tired, stressed and sleep-deprived King of Ghosts can be summoned!

Holiday Gift 2022 (439 kudos): ALL ghosts need to honour the truce. Including those who don't know they're considered part ghost.

Poison Blood and Weighted Crowns (408 kudos): The Justice League asked for help to the Ghost King.

The King demanded Jason Todd in exchange.

Jokingly, Robin accepted.

5. Do you respond to comments?

YUP. Sometimes I forget and only see it years later tho. But I do like answering comments so I try my best! If I don’t answer is ‘cause I can’t think of anything else to say but I still try! (I don’t really answer in FFN anymore tho, because I forget if I’ve already answered and I don’t remember how to check that, and I don’t want to accidentally answer twice lmao)

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Uhh… not a big fan of angst, and even though I tried my hand at it in the past don’t remember where I put it anymore

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Dragon :') Danny gets dental! (lol ok, I can’t really tell, idk)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

My fics ain’t popular enough to get hate I believe lol.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

LOL. I WROTE LEMON ONCE. YEARS AND YEARS AGO (almost ten year now. I was fourteen). After that, I haven’t, but I have an idea for a fic and if I actually get to write it I know it would be explicit.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

asdfghjjklñ I fucking love CrossOvers so much. I’ve written some "niche" ones but I believe the craziest/crackiest was Doors :))

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

None that I know of. (Again, not popular enough lol)

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Other than ramble with the discord buddies, nope I haven’t.

13. What's your all-time favourite ship?

None tbh, I do like some ships but I’m aro and I don’t really have an OTP.

14. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Not much in the way of WIPs but I do have several plot bunnies I entertain before discarding.

On DPxDC I had a demon twin AU where Damian killed Danny as a kid with pressure from Ra’s al Ghul, and they met again after many years, with Damian as Robin and Danny as the Ghost King… and Danny didn’t forgive Damian. I had a lot planned and wanted to include a lot of worldbuilding, but ultimately I decided I couldn’t give Damian’s character justice as I was projecting heavily on my broken relationship with my abusive brother, and Damian deserved better than to be compared to my brother.

Also DPxDC, the aforementioned explicit work, which would be Danny/Valerie/Jason, with them dealing with being ecto-entities with the ecto-acts in place, Danny dealing with being King and trying to be an astronaut, Valerie coping with her feelings on her nature and her Wayne scholarship, and Jason being a crime lord with a family of vigilantes, and their broken yet existing relationships. As they navigated the complex ensuing dynamics, they dismantled the GIW and took down the Ecto-Acts.

I would also like to do more for Dragon, but I really don’t feel like it rn

16. What are your writing strengths?

Instrospection and mindscapes, if I can say so.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Anything that isn’t introspection and mindscapes.

Naruto :)

20. Favourite fic you've written?

aughdabdsufsda, I don’t really know, I love several of them for different reasons, but maybe Father and Sons? I love Clockwork and I love my Sandman crossovers, so I liked mixing both.

Fanfic Review for 2023

So I posted one of these at the end of 2022 so now it’s time for one for 2023 as well. I enjoyed going back to this post to see what all I did this year so It’ll be interesting to see how some of it compares to last year.

I will say that my resolution was not completed I did not complete any of my long fics, but I did work on them and I claim that as progress. Without further ado my fanfic review for 2023! "Your parents say ghosts are bad, right?"

Sam's character dashed across the screen. Danny had left her an opening and jammed the controller—defeating him in one swift motion. His character keeled over before vanishing altogether. Nice.

When Sam brought her eyes to Danny's, she realized that he'd dropped his controller.

It hadn't been an opening.

He'd let her win that round.

"Hey, what gives? You giving up on me, Fenton?" Danny's eyes were misted over. In an instant, he came back to himself. "What?"

"You lost. You didn't throw the round on purpose, did you?"

"I saw it," Tucker weighed in. "You were doing good until you just—bam, drop." He mimed the controller dropping.

"No, I just—just spaced out." He paused. "What did you say about ghosts?"

Ah. That was it. Danny always got weird whenever someone brought up ghosts. She couldn't blame him considering his parents were the ones who punched a hole through to another dimension, flooding the town with supernatural assailants.

"Your parents say they're bad, right? But like, what about this new dude?"

Tucker frowned. "What, you mean Inviso-Bill?"

"Yeah! He's been fighting off the other ghosts. Hasn't he? So what's his deal?"

Danny went quiet again. There was an expression on his face that Sam couldn't place.

"He's—he's the one with the white hair. Right?"

His face was red now.

She didn't point it out.

"Yeah. He is." She leaned against the frame of Tucker's bed. "So, if your parents say they're all bad either Phantom's playing us all, or he's the first good ghost ever."

Tucker hummed. "How statistically probable is that? One good ghost out of a whole dimension of bad ones? He's gotta be hiding something, then."

"Ghosts are bad," Danny blurted. "That's what my parents have said. No doubt about it."

"Right," she said, "but how'd they figure that out?"

Danny opened his mouth then shut it. "What?"

"Like. Have they evaluated every single ghost that's ever existed? No offense, but I doubt it. Also, is it reasonable to morally judge ghosts as you would a human? I mean, it makes sense that a being that can't die would think differently than us."

Tucker thought on it. "You've got a point there."

"I mean, it's in ghosts' nature, though," Danny said. "Because they're dead, they have no inhibitions. And ghosts often form from violent deaths—that's bound to make anyone unstable."

"So, they have done studies?" Sam asked. "What methods?"

"I mean, I haven't read them. They tell me the results."

"Right. So your parents say ghosts are bad and you take their word for it." "I mean, I don't—" he cut himself off and looked down at his hands. Danny turned them over and for a moment she imagined him keeling over just as his character had done on screen.

Sam blew her bangs out of her eyes and brushed her fingers against his shoulder.

"I'm not attacking you or anything, Danny. I like your parents. They're so much more chill than mine."

"You seen his dad's driving?" Tucker hissed.

"Shush. I'm just trying to figure out this whole thing with Inviso-Bill, you know? Is he bad? Or is that just a misconception?"

"I don't think he's good," Danny said. "But, maybe you're right. Maybe he's not all bad. I'm trying to figure it out too."

"Ghosts, man," Tucker sighed. "Confusing as hell."

Danny laughed. "Tell me about it."

"I would, but I'd bet your parents give you an earful enough."

"Yeah. It's always like, 'Ghosts are evil, Danny. We're gonna dissect the ghosts, Danny. Don't let the ghosts catch you off-guard, Danny.'" His face fell. "I'm so tired of it."

"Aw, man."

"We don't have to talk about it anymore if you don't want to," she said. "I'm sorry for bringing it up."

"No. It's alright. I—it's nice to hear something about ghosts that isn't just—you know."

"That's good."

"Yeah."

No one said anything.

"Want to play another round?"

Danny raised his controller. "Oh, you're on."

Elements

Innocent questions could take a person down dangerous rabbit holes.  Questions like, for example, “Why doesn’t ghost ice melt?”

He hadn’t really thought about it before, but, surrounded by the icy caves of the Far Frozen, it seemed a natural enough question.  He hadn’t a lot of time to ask about it when he was here before, in ice power bootcamp, trying to get enough of a handle on them to fight Undergrowth without freezing to death.  

But the crystal he’d given Sam had yet to melt, and even when they’d held it over a tea light, it had retained its shape.  They’d only been able to melt ghost ice with ghost fire.  It was cool, but also weird.  

Frostbite beamed at him.  Frostbite did a lot of beaming, actually.  It was a welcome change from how most people looked at him.  

“An excellent question, Great One!  How familiar are you with elements?”

“Are we talking about fire, earth, water, air, or about, like, the periodic table?”

“The latter.”

Danny shrugged.  “Vaguely?  I mean, I’m in chemistry, but it’s high school and I have bad grades.”

“Do you know what elements are made of?”

“Atoms,” said Danny.  

“And atoms?”

“Electrons, protons, and neutrons.  Protons are what determines the type of element.”

“Quite so,” said Frostbite, smiling broadly.  He directed Danny down a branching passage.  “Do you know what protons and neutrons are made of?”

Danny frowned.  “I thought that was as small as you could go,” he said.  “Except light, I guess.”

“Photons are indeed different,” said Frostbite.  “The matter made from protons and neutrons is baryonic matter.  Or, as Walker dubs it, ‘real world matter.’  The term is highly misleading, of course.”  Frostbite scoffed.  “We have our share of baryonic matter here as well, and the Infinite Realms are very real.”

“Huh,” said Danny.  “I’d always wondered about that.”

“Some people simply do not take death well, it seems,” said Frostbite, sadly.  “But protons and neutrons are made of something I believe humans call quarks.  Electrons are leptons.  Photons are bosons.  Quarks, leptons, and bosons are all elementary particles.”

“Okay,” said Danny, feeling as if all this was going over his head.  Far, far over his head.

“Ectoplasm is largely made of entirely different elementary particles.”  He opened a door for Danny.  

“So…  Is ghost ice, um, made of water made out of those different particles?”

“Alas, the physics do not quite work out that way,” said Frostbite.  “Ectoplasm has its own analog to atoms, but none of them directly correspond to those that create water, or any other earthly element.”

“But I’ve seen water here.  I see ice here.  Even if it doesn’t always behave like regular ice.”

“Yes,” said Frostbite, “but that water is hydrogen and oxygen.  Baryonic matter.  But ectoplamic matter and baryonic matter can interact.”

“So, ghost ice acts the way it does because it’s ectoplasmic matter and baryonic matter interacting?”

“Indeed, Great One!  When we reduce the temperature of our surroundings with our powers, we are in fact appending a specific ectoplasmic particle to the other particles surrounding us.  The addition of the ectoplasmic particle absorbs energy - heat.”

“An endothermic reaction?  That’s what that’s called, right?”

“That is largely correct.  But the ectoplasmic particles associated with our ice powers tend to break down and decay into other particles rather rapidly, with a few exceptions.  One of those exceptions–” Frostbite tapped his knuckles against his ice arm, “--is when it has bonded to water.  The ectoplasmic particles change the structure of the ice enough to make it far more stable than regular ice and allow us to control it or melt it at will.”

“Is that why it melts with ghost fire?  Because it messes with the ectoplasmic particles?”

“Yes.  Anything that disrupts the particles too much will cause the water molecules to act as they usually do.  But there are few things that can do that, and we can invest more power in our ice to make it stronger.  For example, I regularly attempt to infuse my arm with more ectoplasmic particles, although I fear I have long since reached saturation.”  He smiled, ruefully.  “Ah, and here we are, Great One!  A room for you to practice.”

He opened the doors to a large and completely empty cavern.  

“You know,” said Danny, “my aim has gotten better.  I had just recovered from almost dying, last time.  I don’t think I’ll hit anything I don’t want to this time.”

“I think it is still best to try it out here, first, just for all our peace of mind.”  Frostbite patted his shoulder.

“Okay,” said Danny.  He didn’t really mind, per se, and he’d felt really bad about hitting the other yetis, but…  He’d also sort of liked having an audience that was cheering for him.  

“Before you begin, though,” said Frostbite.  “Who do you know that can use fire?  It sounded like you have done some tests.”

“Oh,” said Danny.  “I just used mine.”

“Pardon?”

“I just used my fire,” said Danny, raising a finger and summoning a tongue of flame.  

Frostbite blinked at it.  “That,” he said, “is highly unusual.”

“Is it?”

“Yes, most people who use ice cannot also use fire.  Different forms of energy control.  Have you ever used electric attacks?”

“Yeah, but I’m not very good at it, and I don’t like it.  I end up shocking myself.”

“Fascinating.  May I?”  He gestured at Danny’s hand.  Danny extended it to him, and didn’t protest when he started to examine it.  “How is your general telekinesis?”

“No good in a fight, I have to concentrate too much.”

“Have you ever moved the wind?  Manipulated water?  The weather?”

“Only for a little bit,” said Danny.  “Right after Vortex hit me with lightning that one time.”

“What?”

“What?”

“Vortex hit you with lightning and you gained powers?”

“Yeah?”

“The Ancient Vortex?”

“I don’t know how old he is.”

Frostbite stared at Danny for a long moment, then sighed heavily.  “If it didn’t show up in your exam today, it is probably fine, but that is the sort of thing to tell your doctors.”

Danny shrugged.  “I forgot,” he said.  “So…  What are we going to do today?  Anything…”  He grinned.  “Cool?”

Frostbite chuckled.  “Great One, everything we do is ‘cool,’ as you put it.  Now, let us begin with some basic exercises.”

“Would you call them… warm ups?”

“Sometimes, I fear I will never understand human slang.  Particle physics is much more straightforward.”

Ghost King

The Lord of the infinite realms.

The Ghost King.

They are a guardian of all within that celestial plane.

They protect. They give. They take. They punish. And all of them rule with a unique but equally necessary hand.

One King called themselves Prince, and roamed the realms, spreading joy and wealth.

Another called herself Emperor, and let those in need of her aid in battle petition her in her lair.

And one had called himself Lord Protector, languishing in his castle paradise surrounded by family and fraid, taking power from wrongdoers that became too loud for him to ignore.

Then there was Pariah Dark, who had called himself King and sought to protect his rule, to have absolute power.

That had been his folly. But it had also been his right.

Contrary to popular belief, becoming king of the infinite realms had nothing to do with councils, or courts, or usurpation. No one had any say in the realms ruler besides the very realm themselves.

Pariah Dark had been a tyrant, and had lost the absolute power his divine right should have bestowed as soon as the plot to trap him was set in motion.

Because even the realm could understand there must have been flaw in that choice if The Ancients themselves, the closest ones to her, had sought to dethrone him.

Still, a new ruler was not chosen in his place because, Ancients united was not a strength ever meant to be utilized, to be seen. The punishment for shaking the realms on its foundation was enforced by the very realms itself: A thousand years of ruin.

And thusly, for a thousand years the realms eroded, ghost-kind languishing in their ruin of circumstance.

And then, when the false king with an empty crown was finally freed. Finally defeated. Felled again, with cunning, and wit, and dumb, reckless luck.

And the realms saw a boy, turbulent as the lands in which Pariah slept.

And the realm had chosen.

Danny sighed as he flew home.

Catching the ghosts in Amity had been especially easy today; he felt so powerful, so assured.

It was worrying, and he was certain the change was related to whatever had attached itself to Danny’s head.

That morning, Danny had woken up with a sparkling laurel wreath of ice and snow tangling through his hair, a shining gossamer veil flowing down a short distance behind him.

Ghosts had been making fun of it all day and he’d had to hide it with one of Tucker’s beanies at school, which had been… uncomfortable. Like he could barely breathe.

And when he wasn’t covering it, it hurt to consider taking it off. He had still tried, of course, to no avail. It was practically glued down.

It didn’t feel like that if he left it alone though. Like now, as he flew, the headpiece shifted softly, the sensation of snowflakes hitting his scalp.

It was also definitely sentient, whispering fondness and love and obsession to his core, an ecto signature equal parts satiating and soothing.

He wouldn’t mind wearing it forever.

Which was precisely why he was going to the Far Frozen tonight. With his luck, he’d attracted some sort of ghost parasite, and surely, a doctor would know what to do about that.
