#Danny knows nothing about lab safety

Danny's mind was racing as he approached the hidden lab. He was so close and yet he found it hard to keep moving. When his legs were too rigid to walk he forced himself forward by floating. He- he was right outside the man's lab. His father The growing cold was freezing by now, it felt pure relief.
Danny let his feet touch the ground again and for his invisibility to wash away. He made sure his foot steps were loud enough to be heard. Mr. Freeze was already staring at him when he entered, freeze ray in hand. "Who are you? Why are you here." He demanded. Danny raised his hands in surrender. "My name is Danny Fenton, four... four years ago I was diagnosed with Huntingtons disease."
That gave the man pause, and a mount to inspect the boy. He seemed completely unaffected by the cold. Pale skin completely not flushed, no sign of frosted breath and he wasn't shaking from the cold at all. What was this boy, a meta?
The back of his mind screamed about a boy, still just a baby. When Victor's work and Nora's illness became too much and he sent Daniel to live with relatives as temporary guardians. It was better for him to live people who could care for him, as much as it pained Victor and Nora. Then things went downhill and temporary turned to permanent. Victor was in Arkham when he learned that Daniel was put into the foster system and he didn't hear anything else since.
Victor was brought back to the present when Danny spoke up. "I dug up old files about me being taken by cps. From relatives of your's who were my temporary guardians." He was shifting nervously, looking to the ground. "I- I was hoping you'd let me join you."
"I've been doing my own research and my friend's grandmother promised to help funding but she's not a billionaire." Victor started walking to Danny. "I'm pretty good with engineering too, I can help you make equipment you need." He trailed off his rambling as the man stopped in front of him. Victor pulled him into a hug. "I'm so sorry" He said and Danny's heart clenched at those words. With tears threatening to spill, Danny hugged him back. "You couldn't have known."
Danny is the son of Mr Freeze
So! Danny was adopted as a Kid.
It was never really that big of a thing to him, just a small footnote in his life. He never really cared about finding his Bio Family, or even looking into it at all. His new Family was enough for him, no need to complicate it all that much.
But then, the Accident happened.
After he got shocked by the Portal and passed out, his parents had rushed him to the hospital. Apparently his Heart had been pulsing irregularly, so they had decided to not take any chances.
While at the Hospital, the Doctors noticed a particularly strange result in his blood tests. So, a few months after he had been discharged (it took a while for the blood work to come back), they asked him to come back in for further testing.
At first, Danny was scared that they had found out about his Powers. But when he walked into the Room, they had other news.
He had been diagnosed with Huntingtons Disease, a rare neurological condition that apparently had no known cure. The only possible way to contract the Disease was to have inherited it from one of his parents.
They said it was in its early stages at the moment, but as time passed he would become weaker and weaker, and he would become more sickly. They diagnosed that he had just over 5 years left before he died, and there were no treatments or cures that could save him.
Danny got a second opinion with Frostbite, since he knew more about Ghost Biology and might know if it was truly a fatal Disease for a Halfa.
And yeah, it was. No matter how much of him is Ghostly, he is still half Human, and the Human Disease in his body can and will kill him. And there's no guarantee that he will become a full Ghost upon death. For all he knows it will just End him.
So, Danny had a time limit to find a way to cure himself. He didn't have much time to study, what with the constant Ghost Attacks, his School Work, and keeping his parents from attacking innocent Ghosts, but he managed where he could.
Speaking of his parents, they had been looking into the disease as well. But they seemed convinced that they could find a way to save him by simply dissecting a Ghost to study its biology. (It was as if this was just a convenient excuse to dive deeper into their obsession)
After a while, he mamaged to resolve the Ghost Attack stuff and got his grades under control, but he was still making little progress on finding a Cure.
So, he looked into other people who might be studying the same Disease, to see if he could look I to their research. But that search came up empty.
There was nobody who wanted to fund research into such a rare disease, so nobody was studying it. There was one man who was studying it, but he was a convicted Supervillain. Danny decided that he would be his backup plan, since he wasn't sure how Jazz would react if he teamed up with a known Villain.
He just kept on studying his condition.
...
It had been about 4 years since his initial diagnosis, and Danny was 18. And he needed help.
He had made no progress in developing a Cure, and his condition had worsened. He could barely walk without a limp anymore, and his limbs felt weaker by the day.
He did manage to get some luck when he found out that lowering his Body Temperature would slow the progress of the Disease. He was never more thankful for his Ice Powers than on the day he figured that out.
But he had hit a roadblock. He needed help, and unfortunately there was only one place he could go to get it. The Supervillain he had read about all that time ago, Mr Freeze.
Now he was headed to Gotham City to seek his help, even if it meant becoming a Villlain himself.

Do NOT Touch a God- DC x DP Prompt (Tim x Danny)
Correction: don't touch Danny.
A rule has been added to the house rules of Titans Tower. It started after the arrival of the summoning of the interdimensional teen that takes residence there.
Despite being only a teenager the power he held was at the level of a god. He causally reshaped reality around him to his liking. Rooms are made bigger on the inside but remain the same outside. Danny's hate for things getting too dirty made all clothes left on the floor for too long disappear into the laundry room and spilled drinks evaporate. The tower became self-cleaning as everything found its place on its own. Danny said it was just what he prefers, lab safety and all that. Sometimes Danny would turn off gravity, no reason be just likes it like that.
Unfortunately, he doesn't go on missions except for extreme situations where he is needed. He is content to spend his time in the med bay as the resident healer. He is also one of the few that can fix up Cyborg. Danny doesn't get involved unnecessarily. This has led to a few arguments in the past over how unhelpful he can be despite being able to help them. Danny shrugs it off and disappears when it happens. It was not fair on him, if he didn't want to fight he shouldn't have to. He was an asset and he offered his help freely.
So why does the No Touch rule exist? Well, Danny doesn't like touching people. He wears gloves for a reason especially when he is working in the bay fixing up everyone after a mission. He also avoids others touching him, shrinking away when someone tried.
Everyone respected that boundary but after a rough mission in particular Kon started an argument with him. The injuries were severe and he was just mad that M'gann was hurt. Danny was already overwhelmed with healing everyone and Kon seemed to strike a nerve. When Kon almost made contact with him Danny flickered out of existence and reappeared further away.
After several hours of fixing broken bones and open wounds Danny retreated.
Tim decided to check on him later. Kon was sorry for overreacting and blaming Danny for something he couldn't control but Danny probably didn't want to see him right now.
Danny looked worse for wear when he opened the door. He looked tired, weary from using his energy. He wrapped a blanket around himself.
They talked for a while. Mostly about nothing important, other times about how stressful things were right now.
Tim often found it hard to believe that Danny wasn't just a normal teen. Then again, what did he know about normal?
But he had wondered something.
He reached out and tried to hold Danny's hand but Danny moved away quickly noticing.
"You shouldn't do that." He said simply.
Had he been Dick he would repect the boundaries and if he was Jason he'd probably agree. But he was Tim and Tim was very bad at boundaries. That's kind of how he got here.
"Why not?" Tim asked.
"It might be too much," Danny said cautiously eyeing Tim who held his hands up.
"Try me."
Danny sighed and removed one of his gloves and touched his hand to Tim's shoulder.
All at once different sensations filled his senses. A comforting touch of a friend, a light fluttering of a passing stranger on the street, a strike of a hated rival, the steady hand of a family member, the playful tap of a classmate, the caress of a lover...all at once. Each feeling is defined but also blurred. It was almost like being pulled in thousands of directions as they tried to claim a part of Tim into their reality.
A single touch sent him into a trace. When Danny pulled away he expected to have broken Tim like how a child accidentally snaps their toys when playing. He knew his touch could overwhelm people almost to death. Clockwork said he'd be able to control it some day but Danny didn't even want to test it. Being able to fracture someone's mind was scary. Seeing it happen once was enough. So why did he try it on Tim? Did he not care what happened to him?
It's a bit selfish and embarrassing to admit but...not being able to touch another person was awful. He's not clingy but it feels like he has lacked sensation for a long time. Tim willingly asked for this and Danny wanted this as well.
Tim wasn't broken. Infact he had never felt more alive. When Danny removed his hand he found himself pulling it back to him. He couldn't explain it but it felt like...everything. Indescribable but amazing. It was contradictory but all of it made sense.
"Do it again!"
Things kind of escalated from there. It would probably be crass to even say it but let's just say that neither was lacking sensation. It was profound, not purely physical nor emotional, something else entirely. The religious sort would call it divine or a blessing, perhaps it was what heaven feels like. Others would call it sinful, partaking in things no human was meant to know or experience. The folly of humanity.
It was certainly addictive though. Whispered words echoed in every tongue. With every contact a new chorus created. The memories of long dead god flashed and worlds yet unawakened showed themselves. And just when it seemed like everything in the universe had collided and finally made sense...it was over.
There was a knock on the door.
Danny managed to roll the breathless, Tim off with a groan. He stretched feeling a bit locked up. He had been holding each other for a while now.
He opened the door and saw Kon standing there nervously.
"Look, Im sorr-"
"Danny?" Tim called out groggily interrupting whatever Kon was saying.
"I'm busy," Danny said quickly closing the door to go back to...you know.
(So were they having sex or just cuddling? I have no fucking idea and I wrote this. I feel like it's a secret third that is somehow worse.)

Redesigning the Fentons!!

Hi yes this is for yet another Danny Phantom AU of mine it has nothing to do with the Apprenticeship AUs but unlike that batch I actually wanna turn this AU into a fic eventually once I get through a few other big projects I have *sobs*
Anyway individual files for each character under the cut along with my obligatory rambling about all the choices I made ;)

Jazz! Honestly, when I was a kid, I always thought she was 18 not 16 so it was kind of a shock when I started rewatching the show about a yr ago and heard that. Anyway, she's 17 in this AU but already moved out to college on a scholarship bc living in FentonWorks is kind of hell and she has that Older Sibling Guilt for leaving Danny there. For her clothes, I wanted it to be a mix of tactical and preppy.
Danny! (Fenton) The effects of FentonWorks hell is much more visible on Danny than Jazz because she got out of there as soon as she could. Because of that though, a lot of the chores in the lab got pushed onto Danny, without passing on many safety tips, like replacing the ecto-filtrator, cleaning contaminated tools, organizing ecto-weapons, etc. And because he doesn't know any better when it comes to safety, he has many symptoms of radiation poisoning: visually, this comes through in the discoloration/scarring on his skin (Jazz has some slight scarring on her face and hands as well), the cataract on his left eye, as well as burst blood vessels in that eye. For his clothes, I wanted them to look a bit ragged and worn through ripped seams, tears in the jeans, & duct tape around his shoe.
Danny! (Phantom) I don't actually have a lot to SAY about my choics, but I am really happy with it. There are still a few things. I wanted his hair as Fenton & Phantom to be different but still reminiscent of the simplistic rendering of the original show: Fenton is kind of timid so his hair falls over his face, & Phantom is more active/aggressive so his hair is pushed upward. The only other thing I want to comment on is his skin: it's kind of about how I usually stylize Phantom (and I mentioned this when I redesigned Dani a while back) but a "healthy" Phantom in my style would have more bright cyan skin and an unhealthy Phantom has a more dull/zombie green. And lastly, as a ghost, the radiation poisoning kind of cleans up into more neat scarring rather than the muddy/bleeding look as Fenton.

Maddie! Now, I'm gonna be honest, real vulnerable here,... I hate Maddie's canon haircut. It's ugly, I'm not sorry. But I can modify it, so it's fine: now it's curlier, a bit darker, and has a few grey streaks bc she's a genius and constantly pulling long working hours. And, it didn't come across as much as I wanted, but she's got some biceps, strong lady. Now, I'm not really sure why, but I wanted to shift the color of her and Jack's jumpsuit, making hers much more desaturated.
Jack! Big guy. I don't have many thoughts about him either, but I did give him glasses and some stubble for a little bit more dad energy (?) I mainly changed the color of his jumpsuit bc Orange is an extremely hard color for me to render for some reason, so now it's the classic Hazard Yellow. Finally, the most notable difference is the coat I put on him for a bit more scientist energy but my main reasoning for it is the potential visual of him being an absolute tank jumping from overhead with the ghost gauntlets and his coat flapping behind him. Also, I generally like the idea of him presenting himself as a big, dumb teddy-bear, always smiling, but completely unhinged below that facade: dropping the smile or not while towering over you in shadow. Wild imagery.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Do not count on any actual steps towards creating this fic in the near future, it's just on my mind right now, but I NEED to finish my other projects first 🙏🙏🙏 That said, I will (eventually) get around to a handful more character redesigns for this AU including: Vlad, Sam, Tucker, Valerie, Paulina, and maybe Lancer & Dash

DPXDC prompt. Dead on main. Someone who knows you better than you know yourself.
Perhaps Fentons are not able to recognize their child, despite the fact that they hunt him day after day. But for childhood friends, who saw each other in absolutely ridiculous situations that parents are never allowed to know about, just one sneeze and a bored sigh is enough to realize that this weirdo fighting next to him is the same guy with whom you tasted soap and then stood looking at each other from different corners and giggling.
And so, the dialogue after the battle with the creatures of Infinite Realms, to which Constantine had to invite a potential ally not yet approved by the League:
Phantom: Well, mom always said you were bad news...But a crime lord, seriously? What happened to your plans to become a literature teacher? Red Hood: Hey! For Gotham, this is a very high-paying in-demand job. And I don't want to hear anything from Casper. At least I have my own business. What kind of part-time job do you have? Are you selling sheets to your buddies from this green goo? Phantom: This is ectoplasm. And they're not my friends, and anyway… Constantine: King Phantom, do you know Red Hood? Phantom: Do I know him? Ha! This street rat was Splinter of my beginnings until my family moved out of Gotham.
Red Hood: Wait, wait a minute. Phah...Holy shit. I thought I was the best example of what it means to be a disappointment to a family, but you beat me here. Oh, man, only you...The ghost king who is the son of the ghost hunters? Seriously? Hahah! I thought your rebellious phase ended the moment you told your father that you wanted to be an astronaut and not inherit the family business.
Danny*groans and covers his face with his hands*: My life is over.
Red Hood: Literally~ No, of course I always knew that your parents' disregard for safety in the laboratory would someday kill someone, but I didn't really expect this? Like, wow… Phantom: What makes you think it was an incident in the lab? I mean, there are so many possibilities around. It's ridiculous and…hah Red Hood: Dude, look me straight in the face and tell me I'm wrong if you dare. Phantom:…Fuck you, stupid bookworm. Red Hood: Stubborn nerd. Phantom: Red bucket! Red Hood: Pale toadstool! Nightwing: Um, can you guys please stop fighting? Red Hood: What are you talking about? This is how we always communicate. Phantom: Yeah! Well, in our defense, my sister always thought we both could use a therapist. Oh, man, he made me lose my train of thought. Where were we, J? Red Hood: Since when are you able to think? And I complimented your new hair and skin color. Phantom: Right, right… But, hey, not all of my parents' hypotheses really have a right to exist, and you know it! Hm, did I mention that you're built like a fridge and how does this leather jacket suit you? Red Hood: I believe not. And who's talking about your parents' work? You were an airhead when you were alive too to be honest. And as I see it, not much has changed. Why the hell are you still starting a fight with puns? Stop telling your opponent your position. This is terribly stupid! Phantom: Oh, please, these ghosts are definitely not a threat to me. What's wrong with having a little fun? The fact that you don't have weapons to handle something stronger than a blob ghost is your problem not mine, loser. But let's get back to our greetings. Red Hood: Sure. Then listen here…
~~~~~
Nightwing: Jay, why didn't you say right away that you knew Phantom? We've wasted so much time wondering if it's worth summoning him, and you just stood there and said nothing. Red Hood: Pfff…Because I didn't know that until today. He used to be human. And we haven't seen each other for a long time. So how was I to know that he would take such a ridiculous pseudonym? Nightwing: Then why the hell didn't you feel worried about teasing this creature? Red Hood: Why should I? It's just Danny.
~~~~
Tucker: Oh man, 84 murders, attempts to kill Joker and to much fights with Batman and Black Mask and… Danny: Yeah, yeah. It's all very interesting, but it's not what I asked you to find. Get to the point, Tucker. What I will wear to our dinner tonight depends on this. Tucker: Seriously? As far as I'm concerned, whether he's single or not is less important than all this shit. Aren't you afraid to show up at his house? Danny: I'm invited. And for that matter, I'm Amity Park's former public enemy number one. Which one of us should be worried, hah? So he's not dating anyone, right? Don't try to distract me. Tucker: Dude! Danny: Ugh, in my experience, when he acts like he's lost his mind, he usually has good reasons for it. And if not, given some of the events of my alternative future, I have no right to judge him, so…

Villian AU. Fentonworks is a multibillion company, and the head of the company, the Fentons, are supervillains. But nobody knows this because they wear full face masks, lab suits, and use voice modulators. They’ve been active for years, and their two kids even joined into their crimes. The Bats can’t get ahead of them or figure out the identities of the villainous family because they had a hacker of their own named Technus. (Tucker). Sometimes another young girl hangs around them: Undergrowth. (Sam). The Bats constantly were trying to get ahead of them, but never could. But the same thing worked in reverse: the Fentons couldn’t figure out who the Bats were.
This began their attempts to demask the Bats. The Bats were skilled at this, and beautifully dodged all demasking attempts for years. It became more of a cat and mouse game for both parties after a while. Neither had an advantage over the other.
That is, until the Ghostbusters(Fentons) disappeared into the lab for a week. Danny had an idea. An idea for a type of acid that wouldn’t harm against skin, but would dissolve any type of clothing. It took them a few days to stabilize the formula, and by the end of the week, they had multiple vials of the stuff. The Bats were antsy; they knew the criminal family were planning something. They just didn’t know what they were planning.
The Ghostbusters plan works beautifully. Jack got Bruce, Maddie got Spoiler, Danny got Red Robin, and Jazz got Nightwing. After that, it wasn’t hard to figure out the identity of the rest of the Bats.
The next day, the Bats continued their lives as normal, but they were looking over their shoulder all day. They were antsy, and fully expected something to happen. But nothing did. No new random person started stalking them, nothing out of the ordinary happened. But they kept their guard up because they knew better. They knew the Ghostbusters would eventually do something. They just didn’t know when or how.
Danny had been best friends with Tim for two years, and Jazz had been dating Dick for six months, so they were both blindsided by the identity reveals of Tim and Dick. Jazz loved Dick so much by that point, but hated heroes, and had tried to kill Nightwing more than once before. She was torn on what to do.
Suprisingly, it was Sam’s idea that they went with. Jazz already had a date with Dick scheduled for that Saturday, so as a test to both Dick and Nightwing, they were going to kidnap Jazz in broad daylight. Jazz couldn’t be in two places at once for the attack, so they used a hologram to fool everyone into thinking she wasn’t one of the Ghostbusters.
Phantom(Danny) broke through the window of the restaurant that Dick and Jazz were at. In a matter of seconds, Phantom had a knife against Jazz’s throat. Jazz played the scared victim, and Dick tried to reason with Phantom for Jazz’s safety. Jazz was thrilled about the outcome, but still allowed herself to be kidnapped.
Unfortunately, none of the Ghostbusters planned for the Justice League to get involved.

Re: the Fenton Parents-
The thing is, it's not abusive to be just... sort of okay at parenting. It is not abusive to be unable to stop your kid from behaving erratically, to not be able to figure out what's wrong, to not be able to stop your kid from lying to you and sneaking out of the house. They tried! They spend several episodes trying, which is, frankly, a lot of screentime for a 45-episode series (movies excluded)! They just were never able to figure out what was wrong.
(If you're curious: S1E7, S1E17, S2E9, and S3E3 all center around plotlines where the Fenton parents make an active effort to connect with their kids... and that's leaving out episodes where it's merely a major element and not half the plot.)
(It's also not neglectful to assume that a man showing an inappropriate interest in a married adult woman is probably not inappropriately interested in a teenage boy, especially when Danny hasn't said anything. That would frankly be a really weird assumption to make, and it only seems obvious to us because... we already know.)
You can say that they never showed the Fentons taking Danny to the hospital after his accident... but we also aren't shown that they didn't do that. We know nothing about the immediate aftermath of the accident. Stupid Desiree reality-warp episode aside.
It never said that they knew about Danny's accident... it also never said that they didn't. (Personally, I think that it would be super out of character for Jazz to know and not tell them, regardless of whether or not they're neglectful? Jazz, like Danny, has faith in them.)
You can say that we didn't see how the Fentons fed their kids when the food in the house was contaminated... but we also never heard that they didn't do that. There was not a word about missing meals, not even from Jazz.
Do I think the Fentons were abusive?
The simple answer: yes!
The complex answer: But not in any of the ways I usually see depicted.
The thing is- the thing is, I think that the only thing the Fentons did that was genuinely abusive - not just a mistake, not just they could have done better - is their godawful lab safety. That is where they knew better, knew what they were doing was wrong, and did it anyway. The house wasn't safe and that was entirely on them, and danger on that level is criminally neglectful.
But that's a very unusual profile. It's not that they didn't care enough about their kids. It's not that they didn't pay attention to their children, or that they prioritized their work over their family, or that they neglect their responsibilities. (For God's sake, they go to multiple parent-teacher conferences! Jack chaperoned a dance he didn't remember agreeing to attend! Maddie woke up in the middle of the night, not yet knowing there were ghosts around, and immediately went to find Danny!)
They were just, quite literally, criminally irresponsible, which is a different breed of family trauma altogether.
Now, Danny definitely experienced domestic violence. Was Danny physically abused? Absolutely. But because of identity shenanigans, 'was Danny physically abused?' and 'are the Fentons physically abusive?' are two very different questions. 'Was Danny physically abused?' is about Danny's childhood and the trauma he gained from it; 'are the Fentons physically abusive?' is a statement about their personalities. And this extends out to all of the other ways they failed Danny because they never knew about his ghost half.
Did Danny experience that trauma? Yes. Would the Fentons ever knowingly do those things to their child? No. (This contrast causes Danny a lot of stress.)
Of course, a lot of this is still rooted in headcanon, and other interpretations are equally valid! Just as it's never shown that they didn't make sure their kids got every meal, it's also never shown that they did. Just because it's never said that their kids couldn't catch their parents' attention when they needed help, doesn't mean that they could. But I wanted to get my thoughts down, since it's a fairly significant divergence from most of the standard interpretations.
#abuse tw#danny fenton#jack fenton#maddie fenton#i have. a LOT of thoughts about these three okay#jazz is another interesting facet of this but honestly i got the gist of it#danny phantom

Baby blue opposing forest green. But then, the closer she looked, the more she noticed what was off. Skin was a little too pale to be considered healthy, and became slightly transparent as she saw more. Hair was wispy and floaty, almost defying gravity, almost flowing like it was under water as its head bounced. Eyes a bit more, sunken, a bit more tired. Worst of all, its heartbeat sounded so, so slow. And now, it was sitting two tables across from her.

And now he can’t seem to stop hearing it. ‘Wes Weston asked me for this’, ‘Wes Weston did that last week’, ‘I saw Wes Weston here’, ‘I heard he was there’, ‘Wes is so cool’, ‘I hate that guy’. Suddenly, he’s everywhere. It seems like everyone except Danny knows Wes Weston. And, it seems like Wes Weston knows…everything.

God Only Knows
Everyone knows AU, but Wes doesn't know that everyone knows, and neither does Danny, because even though everyone knows, everyone also knows better than to acknowledge it.
For the prompts:
Everyone knows the connection between Danny Fenton and Phantom. To keep their town's hero safe, everyone pretends to be oblivious. Only this one kid doesn't seem to have gotten the memo. [From @vigilant-insomniac], and It's like Santa, the students of Casper High think. You know he's fake, just your parents playing pretend, and if Danny wants to play human, well. Who are they to ruin the fantasy? [From @uniasus]
This is a take on Wes I've never written before, despite having written quite a few Wes fics, and it was a lot of fun, I hope you like it : )

[Warnings for mentioned injuries, threats, and implied bullying]
Danny Fenton was dead. Everyone knew that.
After an accident in his parents' lab, he'd been rushed to the hospital and declared dead on arrival. He had an obituary in the paper, a grave. His death had even been announced over Casper High's PA system, and there had been a moment of silence, and all the science classes had done lessons on lab safety so that what had happened to him might not happen to anyone else.
Then, a couple weeks later, Danny Fenton was back at school like nothing had happened. Hanging out with his loser friends, going to classes, eating at Nasty Burger. Like he was still a regular kid. Except that beakers slipped through his fingers, and he kept walking through vending machines, and falling through the floor. Sometimes all or part of him would turn invisible, or he'd start floating a few inches off the floor and his friends had to pull him back down to earth.
Every time, he would look around in a panic, like he was hoping no one saw, and every time, those who had seen pretended they hadn't. It was Santa Claus, the Casper students reasoned. You knew he was fake, just your parents playing pretend, but it made them happy when you pretended with them. If Danny wanted to play human, well... who were they to ruin the fantasy.
Besides, no one wanted to be the one to remind him that he'd died.
Then the school was attacked by a ghost, and another ghost appeared to stop her. It was the ghost of a 14-year-old boy, wearing a Fenton Works jumpsuit. There was no mistaking that Danny Fenton, the dead kid attending their school, was also the dead kid protecting it.
But after a couple of days, it was clear that Danny himself still thought it was a secret, so everyone else silently agreed to let him keep thinking that. He'd been through a lot, and they didn't need to make it harder on him. Even Dash never brought it up—and he kept bullying Danny, for being week and unpopular, just to keep up the illusion that nothing had changed.
When out-of-towners started poking around, asking questions, everyone kept the secret. The strangers were clearly ill-intentioned, wanting to capture Danny for some reward. Even if he was deluding himself about still being alive, Danny was a good kid who protected the town. The least the locals could do as thanks was act oblivious to keep him safe. They were used to pretending, anyway.
Except this one kid didn't seem to have gotten the memo.
"Uh, yeah, I have some information on the ghost!" Wes called out to the Guys in White nosing around their school.
Kwan grabbed him, covering his mouth and dragging him around the corner before the Guys in White could see who'd called out to them. He felt something slimy on the palm of his hand and let go of Wes with a noise of disgust.
"What the hell!" Wes demanded.
"Did you just lick me?" Kwan asked, wiping his hand off on his jeans. "Gross!"
"Dude, you dragged me down the hallway! What gives."
"You were gonna spill to the Guys in White. You can't do that!"
"Just 'cause no one around here believes me, I'm just supposed to give up?" Wes frowned, crossing his skinny, freckled arms over his chest. "Somebody has to know that Danny Fenton is Danny Phantom, I mean come on, it's obvious!"
"But if you tell the Guys in White, even if they don't believe you, they'll investigate him, and who knows what they'll do," Kwan pointed out. "Hasn't Danny been through enough? I mean," Kwan glanced around and lowered his voice before adding, "he died. Do you really want to make things harder on him after that? Don't you think he deserves a break?"
"Exactly," Wes hissed. "He died. He's a ghost. Ghosts are bad—and why are we whispering?" he added at a normal volume.
"You know that's not true," Kwan argued, keeping his voice low, despite Wes' complaint. "Phantom protects us."
"From ghosts that come through a portal he opened!"
Kwan flinched. Saying Danny had opened the portal was kind of misrepresenting the reality of the situation. Sam and Tucker had reluctantly told the story of Danny's death in the weeks he was gone, and it had been spread around pretty thoroughly before he came back. Everyone at school knew that he'd stepped into that portal and been completely fried. The portal turning on wasn't the part most people focused on when it was always immediately followed by 'while Danny was inside it'.
"I don't think you can blame him for that," Kwan said. "It was an accident."
"One that has yet to be corrected," Wes replied, his anger not fading. "Him fighting the ghosts doesn't stop them from attacking. If he really wanted to protect the town, he'd destroy the portal and stay in the Ghost Zone."
"What about the Fentons?"
"Who cares if the Fentons lose their precious portal when it's endangering thousands of lives!?"
"And you don't care if they lose their son, either?" Kwan demanded.
"So you do believe me!"
"You're a dick, Weston." He'd never called anyone a dick before in his life, but it seemed to apply here. "I don't care what you think, but if you try to hawk your theories on any of the ghost hunters around town, I'll make you regret it, and I'll bring friends, too. I've got a lot of them."
To drive home his point, Kwan shoved Wes against the lockers and glared before walking away. Gosh, that was so aggressive. Kwan hoped it had been okay. He didn't like doing it—he didn't even know if his face could hold that expression long enough to intimidate anyone—but if it kept Danny safe, that was what mattered.
At least Dash would probably be proud of him for it. Dash was always saying he needed to be more assertive to people couldn't push him around. Metaphorically, of course. Literally, Kwan was six feet tall and 190 pounds, even as a freshman, so there weren't many people who could physically push him around as it was. He didn't join the football team for no reason.
Thankfully, it did seem to work. Kwan had his friends—and he did indeed have a lot of friends, since he was a very friendly and likable guy—keep an eye on Wes until the outside ghost hunters declared the hunt a bust and skipped town. He didn't know whether Wes had noticed or not, but either way, he hadn't tried to expose Danny to them again.
Too bad that didn't last. A few weeks later, Wes went directly to the Fentons.
"No one else will believe me, but your son is a ghost!" Wes told them. "He's Danny Phantom!"
Jack and Maddie both froze. They knew.
They knew, and they had both agreed to pretend they didn't. They shot at Phantom, always aiming a mile wide, and shouted threats, and loudly declared their hatred for ghosts. They knew how it made Danny feel, but they also knew he still loved them. They were willing to do whatever it took to keep their son around, and they feared that if he were ever to tell them he was a ghost, it would be because he was moving on and they'd never see him again.
"Why... that's ridiculous, my boy!" Jack declared, a slight waver in his booming voice. "Our son can't be a ghost!"
"But it's true!" Wes insisted.
"Don't be silly!" Maddie cut him off before he could start listing evidence. She knew all the evidence. "I think we'd know if there was a ghost living under our own roof."
"But—"
"You should keep your utterly ridiculous theories to yourself, because you sound absurd," Maddie said. "Now, if you don't mind, my husband and I have very important ghost hunting to get to. Don't you have homework to do or something?"
Wes growled and clenched his fists in frustration but left them alone nonetheless. Clearly, he wasn't getting anywhere with him. And he wasn't getting anywhere at school, to the point where Danny had stopped getting anxious and had started openly antagonizing him about it. Didn't anyone else in Amity Park have eyes, he wondered.
But in truth, he was the one not seeing, because he didn't see that everyone else was on the same page about Danny being a ghost, and he was the one being left behind.
"Hey, Wes-toenail!"
Wes rolled his eyes as Dash stormed up to him with a disappointed-looking Kwan in tow.
"Jazz Fenton told Sam Manson, who told Kwan, who told me, that you tried to tell Fenton's parents about your stupid conspiracy theory!" Dash sneered at him.
"It's not a conspiracy theory," Wes said. "There would have to be more than just one person involved for it to be a conspiracy theory. A conspiracy theory would be like if I claimed everyone in town was working together to hide the fact that Fenton is Phantom," he was too busy rolling his eyes again to notice the look Kwan and Dash gave each other, "but you're not, you're all just a bunch of sheep."
"And you're a... a..." Dash struggled, grasping around his thick head for a comeback.
"A blackberry bramble!" Kwan finished for him.
"A blackberry bramble!" Dash repeated firmly, then turned to Kwan with a confused look. "A blackberry bramble?" he repeated again, this time questioningly.
"Prickly, invasive, and impossible to get rid of," Kwan explained. "Sam and I also talked about her garden."
"Oh, that's nice," Dash then turned back to Wes, hardened his expression and said. "You're like a blackberry bramble, and no one wants you around."
Wes raised an eyebrow and shook his head. "Why do you even care? I thought you hated Fenton."
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean I want him dead again," Dash pointed out. "His parents are ghost hunters, and they're always shooting at Phantom. What do you think they might do to Danny if they actually believed your bullshit theory?"
"Get rid of him! Because he's a ghost! You know, the creatures constantly attacking our town and putting us all in danger?"
"The fact that you actually seem to believe that is why nobody at school likes you," Dash told him plainly. "That, and your general annoyingness."
"Why do you all care so much about protecting a loser like Danny Fenton?!" Wes shouted, loudly enough that it attracted the attention of everyone else in the hallway not already listening, and he threw his hands in the air in exasperation. "So he died, so what? It's the fact that he's still around that's the problem. Everyone seems to agree that they want ghosts gone until I bring up Phantom. A ghost is a ghost is a ghost, and all ghosts are dangerous, even the quote-unquote 'good ones.'"
He was breathing heavily when he finished his outburst, and suddenly aware of at least a dozen sets of eyes on him.
"That's enough, Wes," Kwan said after a beat. "Danny hasn't done anything to you, or anyone, and it's not fair for you to keep doing this, trying to expose him or... or whatever it is you're trying to do. You'd better cut it out. If this is a joke, no one's laughing, and if you're serious, then you're trying to take a real person away from his friends and family because of your own biases, and that's messed up, dude."
"Yeah!" someone down the hallway piped up. Micah, Wes thought her name was. She'd spit on his shoes when he tried to convince her of his theory.
"Enough is enough!" her friend agreed.
"You lay off Danny, he's already been through it this year already!"
Soon enough, every student in the hallway was chiming in their agreement, and Wes scanned the crowd, mouth agape, offended and outraged. When he turned back to Dash and Kwan, they both wore hard expressions. It looked weird on Kwan's usually jovial face, but it was clear they meant business.
"Whatever," Wes grumbled. He grabbed his math book out of his locker and slammed the door shut with a metallic bang. "You've made your point. I'll stop."
"Will you actually?" Dash insisted, raising a skeptical brow. "Or are you just saying that to get us off your back?"
"I will," Wes confirmed. "I don't need the entire football team and then some making my life a living hell. As long as Fenton keeps his distance from me, I'll do the same for him."
The warning was passed from Kwan, to Sam, to Danny, and in short order, Danny and Wes started avoiding each other. They barely so much as crossed paths anymore. Wes, begrudgingly, stopped trying to expose Danny, and Danny stopped teasing him for his failures, and it finally seemed like Amity Park's ghostly hero could go on protecting the town in peace.
But things weren't always what they seemed, and one day, there was a fight. At first, it seemed like a standard ghost fight, Danny Phantom versus some vampire-looking asshole.
Based on the banter, it sounded like this wasn't their first encounter with each other, so the civilians of Amity Park tried their best to stay out of the way and let Danny do his thing. Parents calling their kids inside, the group of teens passing by ducked into the alley, the one riding the opposite way on his skateboard crossed the street to hide with them, safety in numbers and all that.
Then the tide of battle turned, and all of the sudden, Danny was losing, badly. The enemy ghost had started coming at him with powerful blasts that broke through his defenses and left him reeling. Danny howled as he hit the street, hard, and in a flash of white light, his appearance changed from hero to dweeb, and regular old Danny Fenton laid unconscious in the road.
"You can never truly best me, Daniel," the enemy ghost said, but he didn't have time to monologue.
The teens in the alleyway had a plan, and they were coming to the rescue.
Sam Manson somersaulted into the street, Fenton Wrist Ray™ already armed and at the ready, and she laid down cover fire at the enemy ghost while Dash and Kwan ran out to grab Danny and drag him to the alleyway where they'd been taking cover.
"Guess you can't tell me I'm crazy now," Wes said, smirking triumphantly as the two jocks put Danny down gently on the ground, propping his head up on Paulina's folded up jacket. "We all saw him turn into Fenton, that's proof."
"Will you shut up, Wes?" Paulina snapped while Star checked Danny over, trying to assess his injuries. "We knew that already."
"What do you mean you knew?"
"Everyone knew, the whole time," Paulina reiterated with a derogatory scowl. "It's like, super obvious."
"Then why did you all treat me like I was crazy?" Wes demanded.
"Because you are," Star said. "Not 'cause you think he's a ghost—because, like, duh—but 'cause you kept trying to tell everyone. Some things should stay secret you moron."
"Why you even wanted to constantly remind the dead kid that he's dead, I'll never know," Paulina added.
"Plus, you constantly trying to expose him was putting him in danger," Kwan said. "Phantom is a hero, and you were trying to get him killed."
"He's already dead!"
"Yeah, we know," Sam jeered at him as she returned to their cover. "Everyone knows. But you're the only person in the whole town who's being a dick about it!"
"Hey, that's the same thing I told him a couple months ago!" Kwan told her, delighted. "I never called someone a dick before, but I did, 'cause he was being one."
"Good job calling him out, Kwan," Sam said, sounding genuinely satisfied. "It's good to hear that you're being more assertive and standing up for yourself and others."
"That's what I said, too!" Dash noted. "God, it's so weird that I actually agree with you on stuff now."
"Can we get back to the fact that you guys all knew the whole time that Fenton was a ghost and nobody thought to clue me in?" Wes said, looking around at the rest of them incredulously.
"Clue you in the Danny was a ghost?" Sam asked sardonically. "I thought you knew."
"No, that it was apparently common knowledge and you all just felt like making a fool out of me!"
"You wouldn't have looked like a fool if you'd just kept your fool mouth shut," Paulina pointed out.
"You—"
Wes was cut off when Danny groaned into wakefulness and everyone's attention instantly snapped to the ghost boy.
"Mn... ugh," Danny took a shaky breath and blinked his eyes open, quickly widening in shock when he realized how many people were leaning over him. "Uh... hello, citizens," he said, putting on a voice in the hopes they wouldn't recognize them. "Please, step back and stay away from the—"
"Danny," Sam said, "You changed."
"Huh?" He looked down at his hand and gasped. "I mean, I have an explanation for this. I was uh... being overshadowed?"
"It's okay, dude," Kwan told him. "We're not going to tell anyone. This'll be our little secret. Right, Wes?"
They all looked pointedly at the redhead, who opened his mouth to protest, and closed it again, his shoulders slumping in defeat.
"Yeah, okay," he relented, though his left eyebrow was nevertheless twitching in irritation. "Our secret."
"We just wanted to get you out of the line of fire before Plasmius took things too far," Sam told him. "You know I've always got your back."
"Thanks," Danny said. "All of you."
They gave him their smiles and their 'you're welcome's while Wes griped and grumbled and left the alleyway with his bike to finish riding home. Plasmius had flown off shortly after Sam started shooting at him. He was content in his victory over Phantom, and didn't feel the need to fight a powerless child like her, so the coast was clear for the rest of them to leave as well.
Sam said goodbye to Kwan so she could walk Danny home while the rest of them resumed their walk to the mall. Sam had been planning to split off before they got their anyway, she was just taking the opportunity to chat with them—mostly Kwan, whom she'd accidentally befriended during Danny's brief stint of popularity earlier in the year (his 'goth' poetry was awful, but they'd bonded over gardening and a love of animals)—since her house was on the way.
"You gonna be okay, Danny?" she asked, as they walked arm in arm so she could catch him if he stumbled. "You don't have a concussion, do you?"
"Maybe?" Danny said, squinting uncertainly. He shrugged. "I'll be fine. I always am. I'm still just amazed how lucky it was that the A-listers and Wes, of all people, were willing to keep my secret. It's gonna be all over the school, tomorrow, isn't it?"
"Oh, I don't know," Sam said vaguely. "Kwan's a decent guy, at least. I'm pretty sure they'll keep their word."
Danny scoffed in disbelief, but didn't voice an argument. The rest of the way to Fenton Works, the chattered about whatever topics came to mind, just to keep Danny from falling asleep in case he did have a concussion, and when Sam dropped him off at home, she held off her mournful expression until she had turned away so Danny didn't have to see it.

Jazz's Bio Dad AU
Slade Wilson Edition. So, Maddie and Slade could have met when he was undercover (I'm pretty sure he was a doctor at some point so they could have met at a medical/science cointervention or something) Jazz has noticed somethings about herself that don't add up, her reflexes are a bit too good, she's stronger and faster then the average human, she also has eidetic memory. Just small stuff, you know, nothing like moving faster then the speed of light or having visions of the future. (For now.) She mainly chalks it up to living in a house that doesn't value lab safety, I mean if you ate the Fentons cooking you'd probably get some weird side effects too. She doesn't think much of it. Blah, blah years pass and then they meet. Slade does not find he has another kid by her showing up on his doorstep, oh no, he finds out by finding her attempting to break into a government facility. A government facility he so happens to be guarding. He stops the break in and drops her back home, not before noticing some similarities. Slade does not immediately believe they have any relation, he suspects it though, so he grabs a DNA sample and sends it to his buddy for testing. During this time, he thwarts many a break in attempt, with Jazz getting progressively more feral each time. Test results come in, and congrats! it's a bouncing teenager with issues! Now, we all know that Slade isn't the best parent/person. If his kid was kidnapped, he'd definitely go on a warpath to get them back, but good luck if you want him to come to one of your baseball games. Having a kid pop out of the woodwork is not something new to him, he already has four kids (and yes, I'm counting Respawn) He does a little digging, trying to see why his kid wants to get into the facility, he discovers a younger brother named Danny. Now Slade can't just let his kid walts right on in and rescue her brother, it'd be breaking his contract, but if she so happens to slip by him. Well, he's getting old, it could happen to anybody. And if Jazz finds two new passports and ID's along with a bag of cash on her way out of town? That's just a coincidence.

Nightmares and the big sisters who chase them away.
Oh, look more Halfa Jazz brain rot!
Jazz groggily woke up, she let out a tired mrrr as she rolled over to pick up her phone off of her bedside table. Turning on the screen of her phone, Jazz had to cover her eyes as the bright light from her phone assaulted her eyes with the power of a small sun.
Letting out a yawn as she turned down her phone’s brightness and read the time. “It’s only 1:30 am. What woke me up now?” Jazz tiredly muttered to herself. Her ghost sense didn’t go off, so it’s not one of her and Danny’s usual troublemakers. The blast doors on the portal are closed, and for good measure, they had set up a ghost shield in front of the portal as extra insurance.
Her parents Jack and Maddie were gone for the week attending a ghost conference in Chicago, so they weren’t what woke her up. Jazz didn’t want to get up and out of bed and physically go search the house, but she had this nagging feeling that she should, her instincts where telling her too.
Not wanting to physically get out of bed, Jazz had decided to take the opportunity to practice a new technique she and Danny had learned when Mom Pandora was giving them lessons on the many different cultures and society’s of the vast and unending Infinite Realms.
Jazz sat up in bed and letting her ghost senses bleed over into her human form. Her pointy ears and fanged teeth became more pronounced than they already were, She could feel the familiar thrum of her core next to her heart. Relaxing and letting her mind clear, she focused, letting her ghost sense expand throughout her bedroom , feeling the echoes and imprints of her and Danny’s ectoplasmic energy left over from yesterday. Quietly giggling as an echo of Danny came to her vision of him in his little baby man form, getting spooked by one of her old Furby’s.
Jazz moved on from her room and into the rest of her house, feeling the filtered ectoplasm moving through the electrical lines that ran throughout Fenton Works and using them as a map to guide her ghost sense as she went about searching the house for what might have woken her up.
Her instincts guiding her to Danny’s room, Jazz thought about checking in on her little brother, but it still felt like she was invading his privacy using her ghost sense like this to check on him, even though Danny had told her that he didn’t mind.
After a quick check of the residential area of Fenton Works and feeling nothing out of place or any unfamiliar energy. She moved on from the upstairs and the main floor down into the lab.
As her ghost sense entered the lab, Jazz smiled, feeling the familiar and comforting energy of the ghost portal. She let a soft sigh escape from her mouth. Feeling nothing out of place in the lab and the rest of the house, Jazz let go of her ghost sense and prepared to go back to bed.
Then Jazz heard a whimper. If it wasn’t for her enhanced hearing, she wouldn’t have heard it at all. The sound came from Danny’s room. She chided herself for not listening to her instincts. Jazz huffed and let out a questioning chrrr and received a chirp in response. Jazz chirped back a welcoming reply, letting Danny know that he could enter her room.
Her little brother came floating through the wall, looking like he had just woken up from a nightmare. Jazz fully shifted into her ghost half and let out a low rumble of comfort and safety while she moved her blanket and invited Danny to lay down beside her. Danny floated down beside her, Jazz turned to face him and pulled Danny in a tight, comforting hug.
“What’s wrong, little brother?” Jazz asked her core, letting out a soothing level ten category purr.
“I had a nightmare” Danny groggily answered back, purring and leaning against Jazz. “and before you ask, it wasn’t about mom and dad capturing us, I haven’t had those nightmares ever since we came out and told them about us being halfa’s.”
“What was your nightmare about?” Jazz questioned, her aura flashing, letting out feelings of comfort, home, the sounds of her books turning as she read them and the smell of her favorite tea Jasmine.
“It was about the battle we had with Pariah Dark, I dreamed that he had at the last second had stabbed you before we could get the sarcophagus of forever sleep closed.” Danny let out a shuddering breath, “there was so much blood. Jazz, I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t stop it.” Danny let out a whimper.
“Oh Danny it’s okay I’m here. Everything is OK, little brother.” Jazz rumbled out in a ghostly voice of static and noise that would make the living uneasy but to the dead and the liminal it’s as soothing and comforting as a lullaby.
After a few more minutes of Jazz comforting him, Danny rolls back onto his back and slowly starts to drift back into the world of sleep and dreams. Confident that Danny won’t have any more nightmares, Jazz let’s out a tired huff and starts to fall asleep herself.
The last thing Jazz sees as her eyes become heavy with sleep is a curious blob ghost peaking through her window. A regular who likes to stop by every once and awhile. The blob lets out a questioning thrill, and Jazz slow blinks to let the blob ghost know that it can come inside before she fully falls asleep.
Jazz wakes up to sunlight, hitting her eyes, and lets out a full body stretch, felling her back pop. She sits up and stifles a giggle at her little brother. Danny is curled up in an unnatural position with the Blob ghost from last night trying to groom his unruly hair. Getting out of bed, Jazz noticed that she wasn’t fully shifted back to her human half, but she was still partially in her ghost form. It was like she stopped halfway through her transformation back into her human half.
Jazz looked back at Danny and noticed that he was also partially transformed. It was something that was happening more often it was like the more She and her brother got used to their ghostliness, the more eldritch they became. This was something she would have to ask mom Pandora about the next time they go and visit her.
For now, Jazz is going to get Danny up and make breakfast, and the both of them are going to go on a quick patrol to check on the local blob ghosts and willo wisps.

A video has been uploaded, watch?
[In one of the local green spaces of Amity Park, Valerie Gray was confused and angry, messing with her wristwatch, which is actuality, her control center, for her Red Huntress suit.
Danny can be seen walking up to her two grocery bags in hand. When he reaches her, he takes a deep breath and taps her shoulder.
Valerie visibly startles, turning to face Danny. Her face turns angry, "You better have a good explanation for what's going on, Ghost boy," she spits venomously.
Danny holds up his grocery bag, filled hands in a sign of surrender. "I'll get there just let's me pass you some things I bought, this will be a long conversion."
Valerie gazes at what Danny is doing with suspicion as he pulls out several sodas and two convenience store sandwiches. Danny spilts the pile of food and drinks into two equal piles and nods at Valerie to let her choose which pile she'll take. The two gazing into each other's eyes as Valerie slowly takes the pile on the left.
Danny takes the pile on the right, opening a can of soda right away. "You probably want me to start the explanation from the beginning, correct?"
At Valerie's hesitant nod, Danny continues, "It all started about two weeks after my fourteenth birthday. My parents had left the house for something. I can't remember what, and Sam, Tucker, and I thought it would be best to spend time in my parents' lab. We were incredibly dumb fourteen year olds, as one thing led to another, and the next thing I know, i've let Sam convince me to walk inside my parents, inactive at the time, portal. I think I was trying to impress her with my guts, but I'm not sure. It's very fuzzy after the next bit."
Danny takes a sip of his drink, Valerie is raptured by Danny's words before he continues with, "I put on my Hazmat suit trying to provide myself a little bit of safety, not enough for what comes next, but Sam ripped of my father's face off the suit before I walked inside the inactive portal, I had put my hand on the metal walls because the inside was dark and I didn't want to end up walking straight into the back wall. Next thing I know, my hand ends up in a dip, and I hear a soft click. By the time my brain had processed what I heard, it was too late to escape."
Danny shudders, rubbing his arm, and takes another drink. To try to give himself a little bit more time before he has to explain what happens next.
"Next thing I know, my world is nothing but pain that seemed to stretch out for an eternity... I just wanted it to stop, but I wanted my friends safe as well." Danny rubs his arms as echoes of the electricity that flowed through his veins back then causing muscle twitches and continues, "It did end... Eventually, when I got spat out of the now active portal and I unceremoniously flopped on the floor. I looked like you know..."
"The Ghostkid, Phantom, right?" Valerie asks gently as she hesitantly places a hand on Danny's shoulder and gives it a comforting squeeze.
"Yeah," Danny takes another drink, "Boy, did the three of us panic badly, thought I was just a ghost for a hot minute. It wasn't until I started really thinking about my human life that I turned back to human again and found out I was an even bigger freak than I thought I was."
Danny takes another drink, emptying the soda can, so he crushes it with his hands into a ball and throws it in the trash, not far away, and opens another. " Of course, I was in denial for a while. Thought it all was a strange dream, maybe even a nightmare. It took about a month before I accepted that the powers were real. The other form was real. it took even longer to accept the fact that I died that day, even if it didn't stick properly."
"Didn't stick? You mean you're not a ghost that can just look human?" Valerie questions
Danny shakes his head, "No, if it was just that I probably wouldn't have been in denial as long as I was. No, like this, I'm human. My heart beats, my hair and nails grow, I need to breathe, and the biggest sign is that I can use a persona."
"Persona?" Valerie asks
"A special power only humans and human-adjacent can have, It's literally impossible for a ghost to have a persona, but I'll explain them later." Danny says, "Anyway, where was I... oh, right, the Aftermath. So, by the time I accepted the fact, the Powers and Ghost form was real. My parents' portal had gotten attention from the local ghosts on the other side, and they got comfortable enough with it to try to explore the other side, which is when the first ghost attacks started happening."
Danny takes another drink of soda, "Now because it's my fault that the Portal was open in the first place, I decided to take responsibility for the consequences of my own actions." Danny says with a secretive smile, "and decided to use my new powers to protect the people of Amity Park the best I could."
At this, Danny looks at Valerie in the eyes, imploring her with his gaze to believe him. "I'm sorry about what happened to your dad. I tried to stop what happened, but I wasn't good enough. You don't exactly get an instruction book on how to control your powers after death, and Cujo just wanted his toy back from when he was alive and wouldn't take no for an answer. I tried again and again to keep him in the ghost zone, but he kept escaping. I found out later that Cujo could create his own portals, and I had no hope for keeping him contained, but I still felt absolutely terrible for the part I played in getting your dad fired."
"So that Dog isn't yours?" Valerie
"Back then, no, he wasn't. Cujo was a puppy put down by Axiom when the lab changed over from using guard dogs to the automatic defense system your father came up with. Now a days I'm definitely Cujo's person, though I finally managed to get cujo to stay in the ghost zone the majority of the time, but sometimes he does come over to play fetch with the ball he was after in the lab" Danny explains
Valerie looks at Danny and sighs, pulling the boy into a hug. "I can't believe I didn't see how much of an honest dork Phantom was before now. You tried your best. I see that now I was just blinded by wrath before I opened my eyes to the truth."
Valerie then grabs Danny hands, "Thanks for reaching out and becoming my friend even after I treated you terribly, as both Fenton and Phantom. I don't hate you anymore, but I'll need a little time to process all the information I have now before I can hear the rest of the explanation."
"Sure, take all the time you need, and you can keep the soda and food, I got it for you anyway." Danny says as Valerie turns to leave.
Valerie rolls her eyes with a smile on her face to collect her share of the soda and her sandwich, giving Danny a little wave as she leaves
Danny waves back until Valerie is no longer visible, then turns around and happily skips, "Woohoo! My chariot bond has returned to upright, and I got a rank up. This is the best day ever!"

“I don’t care that I’m his biological son!” Danny barely refrained from yelling as he glared at the other side of the room, the Waynes looking stricken at his words. Ever since they found out, they’ve been trying to force me to be a part of it. They don’t care that I don’t know them, that they’d be dragging me away from my mom and dad and siblings that I’ve spent my entire life with! They didn’t even bother asking me what I wanted, and right now I want nothing to do with them!”
The judge gave him a sympathetic look even as she gently prodded him to explain. Danny took a calming breath.
“We met completely by chance. I looked so much like their father did when he was younger that they-they asked if they could do a DNA test. No skin off my back. I knew I was adopted for years, Mom and Dad never tried to hide that from me. Maybe I could meet them, you know? It would have been cool, if it was like that.” Danny shot another glare their way. “But as soon as the test came back it was like my family was put on the line. If I wanted to know my biological father, then I would have to say goodbye to everyone I had ever loved. And when I kept running away from them, kept running home, to my family, suddenly they were kidnappers, and I had Stockholm Syndrome, and they needed to save me from the brainwashing my ‘evil mad scientist villains’ had put me through.”
“Mad scientists?” The judge inquired. Danny shrugged.
“I mean, they’re enthusiastic about their work, but they’re big on lab safety and ethics and whatnot. I’m pretty sure the Waynes took a look at their old, outdated research papers from years ago and assumed. But no, if they had started on the most recent stuff, then they’d realize that my parents viewpoint changed drastically a couple years ago. They love learning, so being proven wrong and realizing that there’s an entire world of information that they could learn, anthropology and psychology and sociology was amazing.”
dp x dc au but danny is bruce's biological kid and he knows it. his parents straight up told him as soon as he was old enough to know, and he loves his adopted parents all the same.
of course, it was a bit rocky with all that ghost business, but eventually Jack and Maddie came around to their halfa son and liminal daughter. Danny just thought it was funny they took longer to accept he was alive and dead than accepting he was in a relationship with Sam and Tucker.
So there's some ghost conference in Gotham being held by the GIW in order to get more occultists/people interested in ghosts to work for them. The Fentons go there, as published ghost scientists, to expose the GIW and prevent people from buying into their beliefs.
But while they're out, one of the Bats mistakes Danny for a younger Bruce. Of course there are some differences, but the Bat (I'm thinking Tim, who's running on like -16 hours of sleep and several cups of coffee) is convinced he's a clone or something. So he takes a DNA sample and the results come out: he's Bruce's kid.
Bruce is devastated that he couldn't be there for one of his kids, and so he tries to get more info in order to possibly get custody back. Tucker, who accidentally found the network the Batcomputer used three weeks ago while looking for the GIW's, is immediately aware they're looking into Danny.
The Fentons have a collective moment of "oh for fuck's sake" and try to come up with a plan to get Bruce Wayne, who definitely is Batman at this point, to get off their case.
While on a walk to get his thoughts in order, Danny runs into Red Hood in Crime Alley. Both of them are immediately aware of the other for vastly different reasons. Jason, for "Batman wants to adopt this kid who already has a family" and Danny, for "oh shit this guy has a fucked up core what the hell is wrong with this guy" they have a Spiderman meme moment and Red Hood, always on the lookout for an opportunity to spite Bruce, offers his help. Danny accepts, with the caveat that he takes Jason to the Realms to figure out what the fuck is up with him.
Jason is extraordinarily confused but for some reason the Pit is really quiet around this guy and he feels safe around some dumb teenager so he's like "okay?? Sure??"
Danny takes him back to the hotel the Fentons are staying in and explains the situation a bit. Jack and Maddie hook up their temporary portal (blowing the electricity of the hotel in the meantime) and get Jason to the ghost doctor, Frostbite.
He gets diagnosed with "bro your ectoplasm is fucked up" disease and his ectoplasm is cleaned. He's like a diet halfa, with a few ghost powers but no ghost form. A liminal on steroids.
Anyway, Bruce sends a Batkid to the Fentons hotel (because of course he found it) in civilian garb to explain the situation. The Fentons Are Not Having It.
So, of course, with parents Bruce believes are mad scientists, he takes it upon himself to get that child out of a home of mad ghost hunters. By kidnapping him.
Danny's just pissed off because he finally got Vlad off his case and now he's here dealing with ANOTHER billionaire with a bat-themed super persona wanting to forcefully adopt him. The irony would be funny if it weren't so infuriating.
The Batkids are so happy to have a "new brother" in the house, even if said brother really doesn't want to be there. Jason just has no fucks left to give anymore and re-kidnaps Danny.
This of course sparks a game of Who Can Kidnap Danny and it's getting to the point where Danny just hates the BatFamily more and more because he was SUPPOSED to have a date with Sam and Tucker today and now he's holed up in the Batcave getting fitted for a vigilante costume by Nightwing. Alfred and Jason are the only sane people in the mansion.
So Danny "Bad Decisions" Fenton just says "fuck it" and goes ghost in private, leaving the manor and flying back to Amity. The convention has ended by this point, so they're all back home.
Cue BatFamily freaking out.
Eventually Bruce serves the Fentons legal papers (once he finds their address). The Fentons show up to court and verbally and respectfully ream Bruce for trying to re-adopt their son who they love so much. As the evidence of Bruce being wrong adds up, he realizes what he's done and feels like shit. Jason gives him a hearty "I told you so" for his efforts.
The Fentons live happily ever after, and Danny gets a cool secondary family that he doesn't really like until they all apologize.
Heheh. Just wait until they meet Dani, he thinks.
#danny phantom#dp x dc#dc x dp#Danny does not care#worse#he actively dislikes the Waynes#because they keep fucking kidnapping him!#what is wrong with billionaires man#all of them are insane#just the court case#Danny destroys them#you know what I’ve had this in my drafts for ages#and not added anything new#let’s just get it out there huh?

SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER 7 AHEAD!
“I am starving.” Danny followed her inside only to find two open containers of takeout and two still sealed closed on the coffee table in front of an empty couch. “Where’s Lydia?”
“She’s just popped into the bathroom quickly.” Zaida held up the two unopened containers. “You prefer Mongolian Lamb or Satay Chicken?”
“I’m allergic to peanuts,” he answered and took a seat in front of the TV, which was paused towards the end of The Notebook.
“Mongolian it is.” She handed the container over with an extra fork. “We’re just finishing up The Notebook, but do not fret. There are plenty of Chick Flicks to come. I’m thinking Ten Things I Hate About You next.”
“Good choice.” He nodded in appreciation and began digging into his dinner hungrily. Zaida dropped down onto the couch beside him, returning to her own container of crispy honey chicken and rice. “I can’t stay long, by the way. The game starts in about half an hour.”
“What took you so long to get here, anyway?” she questioned. It had been hours since school had ended and the girls had arrived at the apartment.
“Stiles called me over to get some lab work done. At least, that’s what I thought we were going to be doing. Instead, he got me to illegally trace a text message and stare at his hot, shirtless uncle from Mexico.”
“Wait, say that again.” Zaida choked on her food, eyes widening.
“What, that Stiles has a hot Mexican uncle?” Danny’s thick brows furrowed.
“No, the other part. The illegally tracing a text message part.” the girl’s mind whirred behind her hazel eyes. The text Allison had received instructing her to meet Scott at the school? “Where did you trace it to?”
“A computer account at Beacon Hills Memorial under Melissa McCall. I’m pretty sure that’s Scott’s Mom.” Danny answered, though he sounded entirely confused as to why she was so interested.
“Scott’s Mom works at the local funeral home?” Zaida frowned. Why would Scott’s Mom have messaged Allison - pretending to be Scott - and call her to the school for a mass murderer? Was she being blackmailed for Scott’s safety? A trade of lives? Allison’s for Scott’s? That would mean that Derek wanted Allison dead. Because of her family history? Or maybe because her family was still in the business? Or was Scott - and by extension his Mom - working together with Derek?
“No. Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital. She’s a nurse there.” He shook his head with a snort at her incorrect assumption.
“This cousin, was he pale? Dark hair? Light stubble?” she continued, her suspicion growing as she took the last bite of her food.
“So you’ve met him then?” Danny nodded. “Pretty sure the guy was straight, but damn .”
“Yeah. I’ve seen him in passing,” she mumbled absent-mindedly. If Scott and Stiles were working together with Derek, why would they need to trace the text? Unless Derek wasn’t the one behind it at all. Stiles had indeed lied to her earlier. Someone else was involved. Could it have truly been Scott’s Mom? There was only one way for her to find out.
“What are we talking about?” Lydia asked as re-entered the room, taking a seat on the couch gracefully.
“Stiles’ hot cousin,” Danny answered.
“Huh. I didn’t think ‘hot’ could run in that gene pool.” Lydia hummed and pulled her meal into her lap.
“You guys can continue without me. I’ve got to go drop my brother off his dinner. He’s on the night shift tonight. I shouldn’t be long.” Zaida excused herself, moving over the front door to slip her shoes back on. Beacon Hills Memorial couldn’t be too far for her to walk. Nothing in town was really that far away. “You’re good to hang here until I get back, right Lyds?”
“Yeah, it’s no problem. Do you need a ride though?” Lydia offered, knowing the girl couldn’t drive yet.
“Nah, I’m good. I’ve got to walk off this takeout anyway. Plus, he isn’t stationed too far away.” she brushed off the help, hoping that this journey truly wouldn’t take her long. She couldn’t wait until she turned sixteen and got her license later that year. It would make all her secret escapades so much easier and faster to accomplish.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Danny called to her as she was about to walk out the front door. She turned back to see him holding out the extra container of food.
“Right!” she palmed her face, hiding her flush of embarrassment and panic at almost getting caught out. “Kinda need that, don’t I?”

As it turned out, Beacon Hills Memorial was closer to her downtown apartment than the school was, being about a twenty-minute walk in the opposite direction. When she arrived she approached the front desk and asked for Melissa McCall, claiming to be a friend of her son Scott who had been in the area and brought her some dinner. The receptionist directed her to the upper floors where Melissa was scheduled to be on shift. Zaida took the lifts up and wandered about aimlessly for a few minutes, trying to navigate her way around the ward. It all looked the same to her; the sterile white corridors and empty halls. She turned a corner too quickly, bumping right into the back of someone.
“I’m so sor-” she began to apologise, stepping backwards, but she froze when she recognised that telltale buzz cut. “Stiles? What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be at the game?” She looked between her classmate and a man with ugly burn scarring across his face. The two seemed to be in some sort of staring match.
“What are you doing here?” A sharp female voice echoed from behind them, and both she and Stiles turned to face a mean-looking redheaded nurse, her lip curling at them. “Visiting hours are over.”
Zaida began to explain herself, but was interrupted by Stiles. The boy appeared to be in shock at getting caught. His mouth gaped open and closed like a fish as he struggled to form words, pointing between the man and the nurse in panic. “You. And him. You're-you're the one who…Oh, my…and he's…Oh, my God, I'm gonna die.”
“What’s going on?” Zaida finally clued in on Stiles’ spiking anxiety levels, starting to feel her own nerves shake. There was something else going on here. Something deeper.
Out of nowhere, a familiar pale man in a black leather jacket appeared, swiftly knocking out the nurse in one punch. The redhead crumpled to the ground as Zaida started wide-eyed and couldn’t help the gasp that escaped her.
“That's not nice. She's my nurse.” The burned man spoke calmly. It was an entirely unbefitting tone for the whole interaction.
“She's a psychotic bitch helping you kill people.” Derek retorted and nodded to herself and Stiles to move. “Get out of the way.”
“Oh, damn.” Stiles let out a weak exhale and dropped to the floor, scooting backward into an open and empty hospital room. Zaida’s own joints felt like jelly as she remained frozen to the spot.
“Kill people? Him? He’s the…” She pointed between the two as she connected the dots. “Oh my God. We are going to die.”
The burned man started to move forward and in her panic, Zaida tossed the only thing she could straight at him. The takeout container hit the man’s chest, causing the lid to pop off and the Chinese food to splatter everywhere. He simply looked at her with a raised brow, unphased by the attack. She whimpered under his stare and felt something cold clamp around her wrist, tugging her into the hospital room where she tripped over her own leaden feet and fell atop Stiles.
“Your hands are freezing!” she exclaimed, scrambling away from him.
“We’re about to die and that’s what you’re worried about?” he balked as the two men in the hallway began to fight.
“You think I killed Laura on purpose? One of my own family? My mind, my personality were literally burned out of me. I was being driven by pure instinct.” The scarred man’s tone remained cool and unaffected.
“You want forgiveness?” Derek’s, on the other hand - was full of snarling aggression.
“Laura? Laura Hale? The body in the woods. Derek’s sister. She was his family too? They’re related?” her frightened mind struggled to make sense of it all.
“Peter is Derek’s uncle,” Stiles explained and rose to his feet, helping her up once he was standing.
“I want understanding. Do you have any idea what it was like for me during those years? Slowly healing, cell by cell. Even more slowly coming back to consciousness. Yes, becoming an Alpha, taking that from Laura pushed me over a plateau in the healing process. I can't help that.” The burned man - Peter - kept talking as the two men punched and kicked and clawed at each other. “I tried to tell you what was happening. I tried to warn you.”
“Alpha?” she repeated with a squeak, but this time Stiles didn’t answer. Instead, he took her hand into his own and tugged her out of the room whilst they still had a chance at escaping. The two of them ran as fast as their burning lungs and weak muscles would allow, flying through the corridors and opting to take the stairs rather than wait for the elevator. Zaida didn’t know where she was going. Her only choice was to place her trust in the boy who was guiding her. They didn’t so much as slow down until they reached Stiles’ powder blue Jeep parked out the front of the hospital.
The boy unlocked the car and she flung the passenger side door open, slamming it shut behind her. “Drive! Just drive!” She shouted at him, not bothering with her seatbelt until he had reversed out of the parking spot and they were careening down the road. “Five things. Five things, come on Zaida.”
“The hood is blue and dented. The steering wheel is black.” She didn’t realise she was speaking aloud until Stiles responded to her, counting things he could see in a shaky voice.
She stared at him for a moment in surprise before continuing. “The dashboard is faded.”
“Your…uh, your skirt is plaid, and your nails are red.” He took deep, unsteady breaths in an attempt to calm his racing heart, and she slowed her breathing to match.
“Four things. ” Zaida nodded, finding some comfort in the fact that he was following her same process. That this time, she wasn’t alone. “The seats are cold, and my feet hurt from running in these boots.”
“My fingertips feel numb, but my body is overheating,” Stiles added. “Three things. ”
“Your engine sounds like shit.” Was the first thing she could think of, which earned her a breathy huff of short laughter. “I can hear my heart beating in my ears.”
“Your voice is nice. Smooth. Sweet.” He complimented, unable to focus on any other sound. Her breath hitched in her throat, a shy smile ghosting her lips.
“I like your cologne.” She responded and when he looked at her with flabbergasted amber eyes, she explained with two words. “Two things.”
“Your perfume smells like candy.” Stiles tapped his fingers nervously against the steering wheel, but his breathing seemed to even out. As did her own.
“Want one?” She offered, unwrapping and holding out a stick of strawberry gum that she quickly retrieved from the hidden pocket in her skirt.
He took it eagerly, keeping one hand on the steering wheel and taking it with his free hand to pop it into his mouth. Zaida did the same, relishing in the taste of it. “One thing.” He acknowledged.
“One thing.” She repeated. Once she felt as though her heart wasn’t at risk of exploding out of her rib cage, her mind went back to what she had heard and seen. “It was never Derek, was it?”
“No. It wasn’t.” Stiles finally admitted.
“It was Peter. Derek’s uncle. He killed the girl in the woods, the bus driver, and the guy in the video store. He was the one in the school that night.” She pieced together the puzzle slowly. “He…he’s not human, is he?”
This time Stiles’ silence was confirmation enough. “Neither is Derek. Or Jackson.”
“Jackson?” The boy shook his head. “No, he’s not one of them.”
“If it’s not Jackson then…Scott. It’s Scott.” Zaida’s brain whirred as she recalled all those strange occurrences that had never made sense. The strength it had taken for Scott to crush Jackson’s locker. His aggression towards Danny on the field. His confidence in facing the creature alone that night at the school. That weird Lacrosse training session she had walked in on that was now in hindsight clearly not for Lacrosse. That strange showdown in the cafeteria. Jackson hadn’t just been mouthing things, he had been talking and Scott had been hearing him. The ‘big changes’ the jock had mentioned to Lydia…“Jackson knew. He figured it out, and he wanted in on it.”
Silence again.
“Of course,” she finally slid in the last pieces of the puzzle. “Allison’s family. They’re hunters.”
If Derek and his uncle were both…werewolves - it felt absurd to even say it in her head - then it must have run in their family. The same family that was massacred in a house fire. A house fire that was ruled as suspected arson. Peter had burns on his face. He was in that fire. Peter calling Allison to the school was no random choice. It was purposeful. All the kills must have been. This was a classic case of revenge. This, she didn’t say out loud. At this point, she could barely bring her lips to form words.
“What do we do now?” She asked after a long period of silence between them.
“We aren’t going to do anything. I’m taking you home.” Surely enough the boy was headed to her apartment. How he had memorised where she lived based on the one time he and his father had driven her home from the video store, she wasn’t entirely certain.
“We have to do something. This is huge.” She pressed.
“I am going to tell Scott and we’ll figure something out. You are going to forget this ever happened. You can’t get involved in this. It’s too dangerous.” He shook his head.
“You’re in this, and you aren’t like Scott and Derek. Are you?” She peered at him with suspicious eyes.
“No, I’m not like them, but I’m in this because Scott is in this and without me he wouldn’t have made it through the first week.” Stiles snorted. “You don’t have to get involved. You shouldn’t get involved.”
“Well, you can’t decide for me.” She retorted, crossing her arms over her chest stubbornly. “My brother is out there thinking that this thing that’s been running around murdering people is just a wild animal. He has no idea what he’s really up against. I want to help.”
“I know how you feel. My dad is the Sheriff, remember?” He sympathised sarcastically - somehow that was possible. “Just stay out of it Zaida.”
The Jeep pulled up outside her apartment building and she let out a huff of frustration as she got out of the car, slamming the door shut behind her so hard that the car shuddered. She stalked inside the building without another word. Fine. If he wasn’t going to work with her, she’d keep what she’d deduced to herself. She didn’t need his help to get her confirmation. She had Allison for that.

The Beginning
Danny was tired. He was only 16 yet he was already world weary. It wasn’t enough for Fate to give him neglectful ghost hunting parents, Death and Life just had to fight over him like a toy before deciding to “share” him by basically cutting him in half. And as if that wasn’t enough he gets thrust into dealing with a whole other dimension. A whole ass realm that lives up to its name as infinite and is the glue of the multiverse. He was now stuck trying to protect two separate realms from hurting each other before he even finished going through puberty. He should be worried about his grades and impressing a cute girl or guy, yet here he was, trying to prevent war as ghost royalty. He wants a refund.
“Clockwork,” Danny groans from his place on the floor, “Why me?”
The Ancient being just huffed, switching from a decrepit old man to a baby.
“You know why Daniel. As the Right of Conquest states you are to be King. The only reason you haven’t already been given the crown is your age. No one expected a child, not even a decade dead, to Pariah Dark, let alone not to fall to someone else’s conquest. As such they see you as the rightful heir. You might not be called King yet, but you are still the Crown Prince and as such you have the right and duty to lead.” Clockwork stated.
“I’m barely passing my classes and they think I should lead? Besides Pariah was a fluke, anyone could have done it if they used the suit. If I really was that powerful as that then we wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place. The GIW would be disbanded, the Anti-Ecto Acts overturned, and my par-the Fentons would . . . ,” Danny tapered off.
Clockwork’s expression softened.
“That wasn’t your fault Daniel,” the Master of Time said gently.
“I know that, it just doesn’t feel that way,” Danny muttered with his hand on his chest. “I mean I’m just me, not anyone special. Just some dumb kid who couldn’t even die right. Who couldn’t even make their parents see the truth. If I couldn’t make them realize something as obvious as me being their kid or ghosts being sentient how am I supposed to lead and protect an entire realm? For Ancients sake their own work contradicts itself with it saying ghosts are nothing but evil and scheming yet saying that they are non-sentient and can’t feel anything, all while making something that they say would be painful to said ghosts!”
“You can not force the willfully blind to see Daniel. You gave them a chance and they chose to ignore it,” Clockwork explained.
Danny bit his lip, “I know. I know. I just hoped that just this once they would have chosen me over their work. That they would prove that they loved me more than they hated ghosts. Should have known they wouldn’t.”
Bills piled up to the point where they lost electricity and water. Permission slips ignored in favor of inventions that would eventually either explode or target him. Chores in the lab with no safety guidelines by the time he could walk. Compared and discarded in favor of his older sister, being told a ‘true’ Fenton would do better. Camping trips being derailed in favor of ghost sightings. Fearing that the food would re-animate and attack them. Hatred of Christmas, filled with arguments. Forgotten birthdays, throw to the wayside in favor of that stupid portal. The very thing that killed him and brought him back in an endless loop of death before spitting him out. It really shouldn’t have come as a surprise that they would choose ghosts over him, after all they have been doing that for his whole life. Yet, he still hoped. Like a fool.
“The heart and the mind very rarely align. At one point they choose something different than the other. Another they may choose the same as the other,” Clockwork proclaimed, as cryptic as ever.
Danny huffed, rolling around the floor, uncaring of the dust he kicked up while doing so.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he grumbled.
“You are kind Daniel,” Clockwork declared, “It is part of the reason you will be a good King. You are not like Pariah punishing others for the slightest misdemeanor. You see the best in others even when it gets you in trouble or hurt. The problem is that you don’t value yourself, often putting yourself in danger to protect others, even when it isn’t necessary. Letting yourself get injured as long as no one else but you would get hurt. But what good is a King to their people if they can’t do anything because they are hurt? It is time that you learn to take care of yourself.”
With a smirk and a flick of Clockwork’s staff a portal appeared under the young prince, ready to drag him to a whole new dimension.
“May you learn to love yourself young Prince. Learn why we care for you and want you to be King. Why we proclaim our devotion to you. Learn your worth and how it is infinite as the realms you will one day rule.”
Danny’s eyes widened in horror. “Wait-”
But before he could continue the currents of the portal swept him down and closed, leaving behind only the Ancient of Time and the shadows in his lair.
“Goodluck my grandson.” Clockwork said softly. Shifting between forms before settling as a person in their prime, looking to the mass of shadows by one of the many clocks.
“My Knights will make it so he is cared for,” the shadows spoke.
“I know,” Clockwork smiled sadly, “but it doesn’t make saying goodbye any easier.”
To be continued . . .
Note: This is how I imagine Danny got in that dimension in the first place and it was so much fun to write! If I continue it I will put a link to the next part here but post it separately to avoid the post getting too long. And as always will credit the one the inspired the work!

Like Betta Fish Do - Part 11
Masterpost of ao3 link and all parts. wc 2942 (Chapter 8 when on ao3)
“So who’s Jason?” Sam asked without preamble after the rest of the topics had wrapped up.
“Jason?” Tucker echoed.
Danny winced.
He had been hoping Jason wouldn’t come back up. He’d know that was complete foolishness, this was Sam, but he’d still been hoping. Because… he didn’t know how to explain Jason.
Being a halfa was Jason’s secret, one that Danny could tell the other was still struggling with. As much as Danny trusted his friends, it wasn’t up to him if Jason should. It wasn’t his secret to tell (no matter how much it affected him too).
There was also the fact that a little part of Danny didn’t want to tell. Being a halfa might have been Jason’s secret, but Jason was his secret too; his bit of his new life in this new place. Sam and Val and Tucker already had whole piles of little things like that from leaving Amity, but Danny didn’t. Nothing for Danny had been new for so long.
And now there was Jason who was new and amazing and completely different—
“Danny?” Tucker prompted.
Danny was regretting giving them a call on the way back from his first lab class.
“Someone I met when I was just out exploring Gotham some,” Danny lied. There was a little bit of truth there. “We’ve eaten together a few times now.” Donuts and take out while Jason was ill but still. “And he’s been showing me some of Gotham.” Or at least telling him about the city for safety reasons.
There was silence on the other end of the call. Shit, did he not sell it well enough? He had thought without being on video he’d be able to get away with the lie.
Finally, suspiciously, Sam asked, “Is he cute?”
“Ancients Sam!”
“It’s a valid question, you’re weak for the cute ones.”
“This is true,” Val spoke from experience.
“It sorta is, dude,” Tucker agreed. His tone completely (and sympathetically) resigned.
“It’s— I don’t— okay, yes. Fine. He’s built like a brick house, okay? He could kill me with his thighs.”
“TMI, my dude,” Tucker teased.
“No, go on,” Val interjected.
“Oh fuck you all.”
Sam gave an amused scoff. “I don’t think it’s us you want to—”
“Okay!” Danny said loudly, talking over Sam which just made the others dissolve into laughter. “He’s just a friend, okay? He’s a Gotham native who’s been nice. He’s fun to hang out with.”
“Sure Danny,” Val said in a tone that made it clear none of them believed him. “Sam and I have to get going for dinner. Give us an update later on the not boyfriend—”
“And a picture.” Sam chimed in.
“And a last name!”
“I’m not letting you stalk him Tucker.”
“Not stalking, background check.” Danny could practically hear the finger guns Tucker must be doing.
“Bye,” Danny said, firmly, though he knew that they knew he was close to laughing, and ended the call before he fished out his keys to get his door open.
“You know,” Danny said as he started at the scene that greeted him. Jason sat on his couch, looking comically large on the small piece of furniture, messing with some wires. “I don’t remember giving you a key to my apartment.”
“You didn’t,” Jason said, words a little muffled by the screwdriver that he held in his mouth.
“Right.” Danny closed his door. He fumbled blindly with the locks, not taking his eyes off Jason. “So you, what, decided Tuesday was a great day for breaking and entering?”
“Yep. Which is why you need better security,” Jason grabbed the screwdriver and pointed it at Danny who’s eyes flicked between it and Jason’s mouth. “Which is what I’m doing. Setting up better security.”
“You remember the whole I’m half dead thing, right?” Danny drawled, but couldn’t help but smile at the absurdity of it all. The faint feeling he got off Jason’s forming core was a pleased rumble. Like the purring cat that got the canary. How could he be annoyed in the face of that?
“Don’t need you to end up all the way dead, kingya.”
“Okay…” Danny dropped his backpack (his new, tear free backpack) on the tiny island counter. He had adulted up and gotten a new one right before classes started that week and was glad for it. (It was nice to not have to worry about losing things out of the bottom.) He moved to perch on the clutter free edge of the coffee table. He tucked his knees up to his chest to stay out of the way. “What does kingya mean?”
“Pet goldfish in Japanese.”
Danny just started at him, knowing Jason would explain if he just gave it time. He was getting used to these stupid fish names. They were still weird, but he was getting used to them. (Maybe he liked them, a little.)
Jason glanced up from where he was tightening the screw on a plate and grinned. “’Cause you’re my sensei in all things ghost.”
“Ancients,” Danny groaned. “That is the—” No, he would not laugh. “—worst one yet. How am I both a sensei—” Okay so he was laughing, sue him. “—and a pet. That makes no sense! You are fucking ridiculous.”
Jason just smirked and focused on the electronics in his hand.
Once Danny’s laughter had finally calmed, he leaned in to get a look at everything that was covering his coffee table, part of the couch, and even some of Jason. He’d spent enough years with Tucker to know that it was all very custom and very high end; that meant expensive.
“You really didn’t have to do all this,” Danny said. He didn’t know if that was true though. What if Jason’s developing core made it feel like he did?
“Nah. You’re my teacher in ghost, I’m your teacher in Gotham. And rule one of Gotham is if you take precautions you do it. Have you gotten that gas mask yet?” Jason asked, snapping the back back on a camera.
“Jason.”
“Danny.”
“Again. Half dead. I don’t have breathe if I don’t want to.”
Jason blinked at Danny. “What.”
“What what? Like, sure, I have to in human form but I can still hold it for, like, upwards of twenty minutes? I figure that’s long enough to get out of most situations. You could too with practice.”
“Human form,” Jason echoed.
Danny froze. “Oh, shit. I, um, sorta thought that the two forms thing was given.”
Jason rubbed, wearily, at his face. “Fish.”
“I’m sorry!” Danny said, throwing his hands up. “I mean half ghost, half human! What did you think?”
“A mule is half horse half donkey but it doesn’t stop being a mule!”
“Did you know when the horse is the dad it’s called hinney instead?”
“I’m going to stab you with a screwdriver,” Jason grumbled wearily. “Explain, now.”
“Okay. Right. I really thought you knew? I mean I was forced to change when I died. But, right, so,” Danny placed his hands together and tried to gather his thoughts on how explain this. “Ghosts are just, fundamentally different beings than humans. As humans, we take in parts of the word around us— air, water, food— and those things keep us alive as they’re processed by our organs. Ghosts, on the other hand, are the world around them.
“The Infinite Realms—” Danny still struggled sometimes not to call it the Ghost Zone after years of doing so, but he wasn’t going to use a name made up by people who hated ghosts for their home. “—are made up of ectoplasm. Everything there— the structures, the land, the sky, the people— is ectoplasm. Ghosts are too. The closest thing to an organ that ghosts have is their core.”
“You’ve used that word before. When you said you had an ice core,” Jason said. He’d put down the parts he had been messing with and was giving Danny his full attention.
“Probably. Cores are everything for a ghost. If you’re being poetic, you could call it the heart but it’s a bit more like a brain? You have one, but it’s strangled by the corruption. I didn’t want to go too much into it yet when you couldn’t get. Most of it of it would mean nothing to you right now. It would like, I don’t know, trying to explain what a rose smelled like to someone who’s had a stuffed up nose all their life.”
“Right, so, something to come back to,” Jason grumbled.
“Basically. But the core is sort of the only… I guess tangible part of a ghost? But humans have their whole bodies so those two things really aren’t compatible. That’s what makes halfa’s so rare. Somehow the ectoplasm was able to bond with our DNA enough so that our human bodies can handle what our ghost bodies are. But it also made a ghost body for us. It’s a balance.”
Jason leaned back into the couch, arms crossed as he frowned at Danny. “And I’ll get one?”
“Every other halfa has one,” Danny said with a little shrug. “You just don’t have access to it yet I bet if you’ve never changed before. Like, there are some powers or effects that I have access to in this form, but they’re more powerful in my ghost form. So if the corruption are blocking the flow of your ectoplasm and your ability to generate it, you probably just don’t have enough power to change yet.”
Jason’s fingers tapped a restless staccato against his arms as he glare at the other side of the room. Danny tried hard not to fidget as he let Jason absorb the information. He really hadn’t meant to keep something like this from Jason. There were other things he was waiting to talk to Jason about, once they saw how he was developing, but Danny just really hadn’t thought about Jason might have never changed into his ghost form. May it was because he had been buried? Jason was the only half with an actual grave.
Coming out of the portal as Phantom had been everything for Danny. It had been the end of everything. It had also been the beginning of everything. His ghost form had been part of that from the start.
Jason looked back to Danny, who froze under the glacial gaze. “Will you show me?”
Danny’s heart stuttered in his chest.
He’d be revealing Phantom. For the first time, by his own choice, he would be showing someone.
“Hey, fish,” Jason said. He leaned forward and rested a hand on Danny’s knee. “You don’t have to.”
Danny made himself take a breath. He’d stopped breathing.
“Sorry, no, it’s fine.” What would someone in Gotham, home of the Batman, know about a small town hero like Phantom? “I’ve just… I’ve never shown anyone who didn’t already know? I guess it just got to me a for a moment. But, I mean, you do know, you just haven’t see it yet.”
Danny stood up, ‘going ghost’ running his head, as the familiar white rings appeared.
-
Jason dropped the arm he had raised to block the blinding white light and just stared. He hadn’t known what to expect from Danny changing to his ghost form, but the color change was not part of it. Or the clothing change.
Gone was the black and orange NASA sweater, well worn jeans, and collection of space themed earrings that Danny seemed to love. Instead, Danny wore a tight, long sleeve top that showed off that he was more than just a stick, something that looked a bit like black cargo pants, white combat boots, and white fingerless gloves. There was a white DP was emblazoned on his chest.
He glowed faintly of a blue green that didn’t hold a candle to his bright, bright eyes.
(Jason’s breath caught at the sight of those green eyes.)
“I didn’t know a costume change came as part of the package,” Jason’s mouth said without his permission while he was still trying to process the rest of the details. Like the way that Danny’s now white hair seemed to drift as if gravity had effect on it. It was almost mesmerizing. That was easier to focus on than the green eyes.
Danny rubbed nervously at the back of his neck. What Jason thought must have been a blush crawled up Danny’s cheeks, but it was oddly purple tinted, like this form had a different undertone than blood red.
“Um, yeah. Ghost things for the ghost form? I was stuck in the hazmat suit I had died in for years until I learned to control the ectoplasm that makes up the clothing in this form. It takes some effort to change it but… I didn’t want to be stuck in that any longer.”
Jason resisted the urge to shudder. He couldn’t imagine even being his old Robin outfit for even a moment.
He stood and cross the single step it took to be standing in front of Danny. Smirking, he reached out and flicked Danny’s right ear. “You look naked without your earrings.”
“Yeah, well,” Danny mumbled.
Yep, that purple, magentaish tint was definitely a blush. He felt a little bad for teasing Danny when the other was obviously nervous about this.
“The hair suits yo. It’s a good look,” Jason said. Without really thinking about it, he reached up to run his hands through Danny’s swoop of bangs. The soft strands shifted between his fingers as if they were under water. But his attention went back to the green eyes. “When you’re like this, there’s no…?”
“No what?”
Jason tapped next to his own eye. “Pit Rage. Anger.”
“Oh, no,” Danny said with a thoughtful little frown as he… drifted up?
Holy shit, Danny really was floating. His feet were drifting apart as if they were made of smoke as he rose a few inches up into the air.
“I guess now that I know about ghosts liking to brawl, I can see that a little? Like, I’m more willing to meet a fight if they start it, just like with you, but they also don’t mean any actual harm. Well, most of them don’t,” Danny explained. “The green really is just part of the color change. Some ghosts have red eyes or cyan or something else.”
“Is the white hair a constant?” Jason asked, thinking of his own white streak.
“For halfas it seems to be about being inverted? Like, frootloop has white hair as a human, but it’s black in his ghost form. And Danni matches me. But for full ghosts, lots of them have flaming hair in all sorts of colors. We think that maybe it’s our human half influencing the ghost half. Also maybe why I don’t have blue skin or something.”
“Blue skin?”
“Ghost coloring is weird and very bold,” Danny said with a little shrug. He reached down to grab the not all there foot he had lifted up and just folded his legs under him— sitting cross legged in the air like it was nothing.
“You’re really comfortable like this, aren’t you?”
Danny gave a little shrug. “I mean, yeah. This has been a part of me for eight years. I was a ghost before I was through puberty. But it was a learning curve for sure.”
Jason eyed Danny wearily. “So what haven’t you told me about now?”
“Well, so I mean part of that is that I was a teenager when I changed? So I was a mess in so many ways and we’re— Frostbite and I, I haven’t told anyone else but him about you, not you being a halfa I mean—but we don’t know if you’ll have have the same side effects since Danni didn’t really. But sometimes I would just suddenly go invisible or intangible. The intangibility was the worst because a few times I just… go stuck part way something?”
Jason gave him the flattest stare at that and Danny just grinned bashfully back.
“You don’t have to worry about that yet! You’re no where strong enough, even if those are things that every ghost can do. Frostbite doesn’t think that you’ll really start having any noticeable effects until your core snaps into place anyways. You just might be extra sneaky for a little bit?”
“So it’s just a big mystery?” Jason asked.
“Welcome to being a halfa. I’m sorry.”
He wanted to be mad. It would be so easy to be mad. Danny was keeping things from him. But… a lot of that seemed to be accidental or things they didn’t have a clear answer for or that maybe, actually, didn’t matter yet.
There was enough for him to deal as it was.
And Danny was just so very… Danny. Jason was learning that Danny was earnest, but pretty fucking awful at explaining things. Unless Jason asked specifically, or it came up in conversation, Danny just outright forgot to mention things. There were some problems with that: 1) there was so much to learn about 2) he didn’t know what he didn’t know 3) ghosts were fucking weird
“I promise,” Danny said, a nervous sort of pleading in his words. “I’ll be around for all of it. I’m not saying parts won’t be hard or confusing, but at least you’ll have me here to help?”
Danny was maybe horrible at explaining things and keep missing out details, but he was still trying. Danny was floating right there, offering something that he never had for himself— understanding.
Jason heaved a sigh, leaning into the dramatics of the sound a little. “Fine. Since you can float make yourself useful and help me mount some of the tech in the corners.”
“Sure thing, dead boy.”
Snorting, Jason gathered up one of the cameras. He paused, just briefly, before he turned back to Danny with smirk. “So, does this make you a flying fish?”
The groan he got was worth it.

AN: Danny, raised in a small city in rural Illinois: “Hey I have a fun fact!” I love Danny being so bad at explaining things. He’s trying, he really is, he’s just not great at it. Jason not really mad, he’s just struggling with things a little and coping by making sure that ‘his’ people are safe. Luckily Danny has the friends he does and is used to the odd protectiveness like breaking and entering.
Fun (?) fact: Danny’s black and orange NASA sweater is from the mars rover line the Smithsonian did a few years back. It is very warm and comfy. Anyways, stay delightful darlings!
So, this should be the whole tag list. I’m sure there’s a limit. I’m not sure if I’m over it? So sorry if you’re at the end of the list and not getting pinged! (I removed anyone unabled to be tagged.)
