Friday, July 21: Anthrax, "Subjugator"

“Subjugator” had arguably the best riff on Fistful of Metal, with Danny Spitz essentially shredding on upper strings with a circular spidery riff that pointed towards thrash while staying rooted in Priest/Maiden dynamics. The track wasn’t thrash, but it was energetic and fun, even if Neil Turbin occasionally ventured into Eric Adams territory but with much less control.  Anthrax in their early years were more fans than actual musicians and songwriters, so the arrangement on “Subjugator” was somewhat aimless and mostly went for enthusiasm and “metal” as opposed to being a real song, but everyone, especially Danny and Charlie were clearly having a great time overplaying and banging away.  Fistful of Metal was definitely the goofy kid brother among the Big 4 debuts, and “Subjugator” had neither the menace, force or technicality that Anthrax’s peers brought to the table, but it ripped with undeniable good cheer, and that turned out to be what ultimately distinguished the band.

Wednesday, December 9: Nuclear Assault, “Fashion Junkie”

I.R.S. Records wasn’t a major label in and of itself, but it was part of EMI’s distribution network and mostly functioned as an offshoot of the corporate behemoth, so Nuclear Assault was presumably primed for bigger things when the label released Out of Order.  And the band seemed at least somewhat aware of this, as “Fashion Junkie” was less thrashy- and much less hardcore- than what Danny Lilker had previously put out with his main post-Anthrax outfit.  The riffs and grooves were chunkier, John Connelly’s vocals were a bit less whiny, and on the whole this played more like traditional early ‘90s metal.  Purists surely cried foul, but Nuclear Assault maintained their personality and delivered a cool and snarky headbanger.  Unfortunately, a good chunk of Out of Order did flounder aimlessly, and Lilker soon departed for more inaccessible pastures after the record got lost in the shuffle commercially.
