Two years ago Nuclear Assault announced their retirement.

Nuclear Assault was an American thrash metal band formed in New York City in 1984. Part of the mid-to-late 1980s thrash metal movement, they were one of the main bands of the genre to emerge from the East Coast along with Overkill, Whiplash, Toxik, Carnivore, and Anthrax, the last of which was co-founded by Nuclear Assault bassist Dan Lilker, who left Anthrax shortly after the release of their first album.

Nuclear Assault released five full-length albums and toured relentlessly throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, and broke up in 1995. The band reunited briefly in 1997 and then permanently in 2002.

Nuclear Assault had released six studio albums to date, in addition to two live albums, four EPs and one compilation album. Their most successful records are Survive (1988) and Handle with Care (1989), which peaked at Nos. 145 and 126 on the Billboard 200 chart, respectively.

Other than four new songs in 2015 on the EP Pounder, the band had not released a full-length studio album since 2005's Third World Genocide, and they would continue to perform live sporadically over the years before calling it quits once again in 2022.

Roma è ferma su sé stessa ormai da diversi anni. Una prassi amara che vale un po' per tutti gli ambiti, ristorazione inclusa. Decine di artigiani del cibo che per decenni hanno provato a darle lustro, anche a livello internazionale, oggi combattono più che in passato per darle lustro tra strade dissestate, quartieri invasi da spazzatura, taxi introvabili e trasporti fatiscenti. Disservizi che incidono anche sulla platea di turisti e "buone forchette" che girano la città a caccia di un buon ristorante.

Dopo le parole dello chef del Pagliaccio, Anthony Genovese, e della chef di Glass Hostaria, Cristina Bowerman, arrivano quelle del maître Alessandro Pipero, che guida da anni il suo ristorante omonimo (stella Michelin e Due forchette del Gambero Rosso). Siamo in Corso Vittorio Emanuele II al civico 250, proprio di fronte la chiesa di Santa Maria in Vallicella che separa il Chiostro del Bramante dal Tevere. […]«Ecco, io apro le tende su Roma a un tavolo che guarda una chiesa del XVI secolo, poi qualcuno arriva qui, si siede e magari spende 500 euro per guardare la sporcizia di Roma! Di cosa dobbiamo parlare?».

Parleremo anche di questo, certo. Nel frattempo, ha qualcosa da dichiarare?

[…] questa è Roma, una città che amo senza soluzioni. In anni di lavoro ho imparato che questa città è un costo variabile molto significativo da inserire in un business plan imprenditoriale. Se vuoi aprire un’attività a Roma, Roma è un costo da tenere a bilancio come l’affitto, le utenze e il personale.

Molti suoi colleghi, infatti, sostengono che per fare impresa è meglio andare a Milano.

Milano è un foglio Excel, Roma è un file Word. Lì fanno i conti, qui facciamo parole. Da sempre Roma è più bella, ma Milano è meglio e se qui le persone vengono a vedere i musei e a mangiare la pizza con la mortadella, al nord si fanno affari. Lì c’è business e chi va a Milano cerca servizi alti e un alto livello anche ristorativo. Sono un quarto di noi, come estensione e come popolazione, hanno molte meno presenze di noi come turismo eppure, hanno in forza quasi i nostri stessi Taxi sulle strade. Come ce lo spieghiamo?

Il caso dei Taxi a Roma è una spina nel fianco.

Ma secondo voi, se un cliente del Bulgari viene a Roma e spende mille euro per dormire, 250 euro per ordinare due panini in camera a pranzo poi esce e aspetta quasi un’ora un taxi chiamato dall’albergo per venire a cena qui, dove spende ancora, per poi aspettare un’altra mezzora il secondo taxi e andare via esausto. Ora, secondo chi ha competenze per risolvere questa storia, stiamo parlando di una cosa normale? Questo è successo davvero eh, non l’ho inventato. Ovvio che sono una spina nel fianco, soprattutto per chi come noi lavora per offrire a questa tipologia di clientela quello di cui hanno bisogno per vivere una Roma all’altezza dei costi e delle aspettative. Il lusso esiste, che ci piaccia o no e ha bisogno di servizi.

Roma sembra il contenitore di problemi irrisolvibili, dentro cui anche i ristoratori hanno le mani legate.

Sarebbe bello fare una rivoluzione, ma non ho soluzioni. […] Io sono uno che non si arrende, come i colleghi che mi hanno preceduto nelle interviste, ma il nostro mestiere è difficile e siamo in una capitale che come dicevo prima non è Berlino, non è Londra e neanche Milano, ma è un altro lavoro da sommare a quello che già facciamo.

Genovese e Bowerman, insieme ad altri chef, hanno presentato un progetto al sindaco Roberto Gualtieri per realizzare un grande evento in città. Può essere un punto di partenza per far riscattare la ristorazione in città?

Assolutamente sì. Bowerman è una guerriera e abbiamo provato molte volte a cercare di fare qualcosa per questa città in termini di eventi, ma niente. C’è anche da dire che qui in Italia in genere si tende poco a fare squadra, c’è poca unione vera e perseveranza nelle cose. Dovremmo insistere nel darci un valore. Un grande evento, che magari abbia visibilità internazionale, porterebbe a Roma una luce diversa ed è gente come Genovese che può farlo. Lui e Bowerman sono conosciuti e rispettati nel mondo, metterebbero la loro fama a disposizione di tutta la città.

Un'ultima domanda. La ristorazione a Roma può fare qualcosa per fermare il declino in corso?

Esserci. Io quest’intervista potevo non farla e invece la faccio, magari proprio perché faccio parte del sistema che dicevo prima. Posso incazzarmi, posso ridere, posso fare il democratico, io alla fine tutto questo preferisco viverlo. Nella vita due cose sono sicure, una di queste è il cuscino. Quell’attimo la sera, quando sei a letto, appena prima che chiudi gli occhi e qualsiasi cosa tu sia stato il giorno ti restituisce la realtà. Ti spogli e sei tu. Ecco io alla fine quasi ogni sera mi auguro di essere sereno. Se Anthony e io chiudiamo i nostri ristoranti qui e apriamo a Milano, secondo voi funzioniamo? Secondo me il triplo. Però stiamo qui e vale la pena viverla.
