Koyasan - A Rainy Journey to Kobo Daishi's Mausoleum
After leaving the Kongobuji temple, I made my way down to the Danjo Garan complex. This is the biggest complex of temples in Koyasan and arguably the most important as it's the first temple complex that Kobo Daishi built. The interior of the temples were majestic and grand and although photos were not permitted inside the temples, the image of the tall Buddha statues and enormous wall paintings and mandalas are etched in my memory. After I spent a good hour there, I journeyed towards Kobo Daishi's Mausoleum that lies at the end of Okunoin Cemetery, the largest cemetery in all of Japan. The route through the cemetery to the Mausoleum was highly spiritual and contemplative. Reaching the Mausoleum after a 2km walk was a rewarding experience. At the resting place of Kobo Daishi, there were a number of devotees chanting, burning incense and praying. I am very honoured and glad I got to experience the walk and interior wonders of the temples I visited in this historical and beautiful place.

Lanterns at Danjo Garan (壇場伽藍), Koyasan Koyasan is an incredible destination, Serene is the best way to describe it - ancient temples, rock gardens, a sacred graveyard, all set atop a mountain surrounded by forest.

Multiple views of Konpon Daito Circling Dainichi Nyorai, the cosmic Buddha and the four moons helpful Buddhas who assist them. Erected originally by Kobo Daishi [father of Shingon Buddhism master calligrapher philosopher mathematician et al] in 819 rebuilt for the last time in the 1930s. Japan is littered with stories of Fire Time and again the sacred burns and time and again it is rebuilt. And the end of each long journey I wonder who I will return as curious how hard it is to protect the new, softer flesh we develop when traveling alone with time for contemplation and self reflection. I dread the act of re-armoring. If only I could hold this softness of self A little longer. . . . #高野山 #壇上伽藍 #根本大塔 #danjogaran #buddhist #buddhisttemple #kobodaishi #koysan #japan #igersjapan #temple #sacred #traveljournal #travelblogger #travelphotography #travel #travelogue #explorepage #explore #exploreeverything #solotraveling #solotravel #womenwhotravel (at Danjo Garan Complex) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4JQBu8p5SQ/?igshid=10m00qhpag2or
