Hey Danny Phantom fandom, I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm looking for an OG fic, but I've forgotten the name of the series and the author.
It's a multi fic series, where Danny's parents (and Valerie?) know the truth after Phantom Planet but the rest of the world doesn't. The first fic involves Danny being caught on video sneaking into Sam's room after curfew as Phantom- everyone assumes she's cheating on Danny Fenton so they pretend to break up to preserve his secret identity and no one is happy about this. I can't remember how they solve the issue. There's also a side fic where in order to protect Danny, Tucker, and Sam from the GIW, a Dash Baxter who's turned his life around helps them establish a fake alibi of being drunk at a party with him. The last fic in the series is my favourite ever non-linear narrative, which jumps back and forth between Danny chafing under anti-ecto laws after a (voluntary?) reveal, Sam being pregnant and alone on Christmas after Danny breaks those laws by using his powers, Tucker trying to fight anti-ecto laws in Congress after becoming one of the youngest ever Senators, and some drama with Dani that i dont want to spoil.
If this sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know, I really want to rec it to a friend and I have been combing my bookmarks and I'm not sure I saved it. Also if you find it, I highly recommend the series! I think it was on AO3, but it was long enough ago it could have been Ff.net.

The long road of how starting a fight with superman over clone parenting eventually lead to Danny Phantom become God Part 2:Danny's happy talk with Superman that definitely starts everyone off on the right foot
https://archiveofourown.org/works/47818321/chapters/120907324
“It's not right, Dad. Conner shouldn’t be treated like that,” Dani insisted, her eyes glowing fiercely.
“I couldn’t agree more, Dani but I’m not supposed to ‘interfere’ with the matters of ‘mortals’.” Danny responded remembering the latest lecturer he got from the observants. An intro into being one of the most powerful beings in the universe. All it really summed down to was hands-off until absolutely necessary. Being the King was way more boring than he expected.
Danny looked at Clockwork hoping they would side with him. Not wanting to draw attention to himself. He was almost ready to begin his senior year. He didn’t want to go near the JL, they could cause a lot of problems for Amity Park and him personally.
“I think a conversation could be good for both Conner and Kal-El.” Clockwork shifted into their young adult form with a grin. Danny narrowed his eyes, he knew when the Ancient was planning something.
“I guess I can have a talk with him,” Danny sighed as Danielle jumped up thanking him with a big hug.
The main members of the Justice League were called to a meeting by John Constantine. He wanted to discuss a potential threat to the supernatural from the US government. The members were hesitant to come to the meeting, however, after some convincing from Bruce that Constantine’s issue was legitimate they all agreed to come. John started his slideshow.
The topic was an intro to the supernatural and how we should leave it alone. There was a collective mirth among the attendees because anyone who knew the man knew that he could not leave well enough alone. It could be said that Constantine preferred to poke at the supernatural with a stick until something interesting happened.
“As you all know, after a ghost single-handedly took out hundreds of US government facilities and went with The Pandora to the US Congress to get them to not nuke the Infinite realms. A measure which only barely passed and still left corrupt laws and the government organization that was going to Nuke the realms intact.”
“And then they learned not to start dimensional warfare and ideally leave those threats to us, no big.” The flash interjected. Constantine pinched the bridge of his nose. They had a long way to go.
“Mate, it’s a big deal. Out of all the special entities they could piss off, they pissed off the one who should not under any circumstances even risk irritating the tiniest bit.” Before anyone could respond a new unfamiliar voice sounded from the other side of the room.
“Hi, sorry to interrupt your meeting, but I need to talk to Superman.” Everyone turned to look at the source of the voice. They saw a teen whose age was hard to place. He looked like he could be as young as fourteen yet somehow at the same time as old as nineteen. He had a soft glow to him. He had fluffy white hair and Lazarus green eyes. On his left arm, he had Lichtenberg figures racing up his left arm that were eventually covered by a black T-shirt with a green NASA logo, blue jeans, and Converse-style shoes where the canvas was green like the boy’s eyes and the rubber parts were black. Everyone was too focused on the boy to notice Constantine drop the cigarette from his mouth. His eyes were wide, his jaw slack, and his hands shaking. Superman got up to greet the boy and walked up to him.
“How did you get in here?”
“Portal, but that’s not important. We need to talk.” Superman grossly misinterpreted the Boy’s reasoning for needing to talk.
“I see, well I’m Superman, but you can call me Clark.” The man of steel shook the boy’s hand.
“I'm Danny Fenton, Phantom, Danny Phantom.” Danny was pissed at himself for that mistake. He never let the secret identity slip, of course, it had to happen in front of his heroes. Unfortunately, that slip-up confirmed Superman’s misconception.
“It’s always good to meet a new hero, I would be happy to help mentor you, there’s even a team of young heroes around your age I can introduce you to,” Danny held his hand up in a full stop motion.
“I don’t need a mentor, look Clark we need to talk.”
“Look kid, I know it doesn’t seem like it…” Danny pursed his lips and Constantine let out a desperate sound somewhere between a groan and a croak.
“Not a Kid…”
“Look, I know you think you’re mature at this age, but a new meta like you….”
“I’m not a meta, I’m a ghost, ya know dead and everything.” As Danny explained, Superman once again misinterpreted Danny’s intentions, also thinking this was some grand test Constantine organized.
“I see, so how did you die, who killed you and how can we help?” Superman said with undeserved confidence. Constantine finally out of his shock muttered a small desperate “Aww fuck.”
Danny’s reaction was almost unnoticeable except for a small flash of green in his eyes. Internally he had a flashback. The feeling of the electricity burning its way through his body tearing it apart. The pain of all his muscles being forced to contract. The smell of his flesh burning, the echo of his scream, the feeling of the wave of ectoplasm that tore him apart and reconstructed him cell by cell. The memories and emotions. How betrayed he felt that his parents left the lab unguarded and basically allowed him to die. His anger at them for having the on switch on the inside of the portal. The worry about if the portal out right exploded and hurt his friends and sister. The despair he felt that his life was cut short, how he would never become an astronaut. Never see Space. He relived all of this in an instant.
Danny grabbed Superman and threw him through the nearest wall in frustration. He took a second to look at the damage he caused. Glad it was only one wall that he threw the man through. He had finally gotten the hang of his power level, thankful for this new base form that limited his power.
“Ope, sorry about that, but Clark we really need to talk about your son Conner.” Superman picked himself up angry that this untrained meta kid lost his temper over something so stupid as a question as to how they could help him. Now the kid wants to talk about that thing Lex created.
“You mean the clone, that thing?” Superman asked, wondering when Conner had time to even talk to this new kid he never heard of before.
“Excuse you?” Danny said with a wave of sharp anger. He called a clone a thing. He called someone like his daughter, the most important person in the world to him. He called them a thing. Bruce was perceptive enough to see Danny’s rising anger. He attempted to tell Danny he had been working with Clark on how to work with Conner. The dark knight’s attempt to placate Danny failed.
“What do you mean excuse me, look I was violated and that clone is nothing but an imperfect reminder of that violation!”
“And your feelings are perfectly valid, but that doesn’t excuse you for treating Conner like shit.” Danny ground out.
“But watch yourself when speaking about the Mirror Born in my presence,” Danny warned as his voice now carried an unnatural echo. The Man of Steel scoffed at the term Mirror Born, did this kid really celebrate, perhaps even honor such violations of genetic autonomy? Clark was about to speak up before being interrupted by Constantine.
“Supes, please just shut the fuck…”
“Mind your own business, Constantine.” Superman ordered before turning to Danny.
“Look, kid, you don’t need to use some fancy new term to placate the feelings of those things, none of them are here. I need you to understand, I do tolerate Conner.” Danny’s mind boiled with rage. It was clear that he wasn’t going to get through to the man. He couldn’t even start the conversation properly. No wonder his daughter seemed so out of sorts. He only had two words to use to respond to the supposed hero.
“Fright Knight!” His order echoed through the realms as the massive black armored knight appeared behind Superman and sent the soul shredder through his chest sending him to the nightmare dimension before disappearing.
The justice league didn’t know what happened. All they knew Danny did was something to Superman, so they all attacked. Well, everyone except Dr. Fate, Shazam, Constantine, and Zatanna. Danny casually evaded all of their attacks, not even the Flash using his speed could touch Danny despite the Flash feeling like he was still faster than the boy. Danny kept this up for ten minutes before ordering the Fright Knight once again.
Superman popped back into existence. Danny slammed Superman to the ground and released an ectoplasmic wave of energy that knocked all the other heroes back. With a foot on Superman's chest, he spoke his voice loudly echoing through the room. If anyone was paying attention they would have heard a second almost feminine voice layering in over Danny’s.
“Listen to me closely Kal-El, you need to realize that the mirror born have their own life. Their own hopes, and fears. They could even be progressively aged faster, however, they still seek the same things any of us do. Love, acceptance, guidance, a sense of belonging are all they ask for from us.
I suggest getting a therapist to work through your issues, however, I will give you one month to begin to repair your relationship with Conner.” Danny then pulled a bunch of various pamphlets on top of Superman. They ranged from, ‘so you’ve been cloned’, ‘how to forgive a clone who tried to kill you’, all the way to ‘how to raise your clone as your own child’.
Danny then turned to look at Constantine, “It looks like you just started your lessons on dealing with ghosts.” There was a distinctive change in Danny, his eyes were the biggest change. The sclera was bright green and his pupils were the darkest black that Constantine had ever seen. It was like they had absorbed all light leaving nothing behind. Like endless black holes.
“John Thomas Constantine, ̸̢̪̉t̵͉̩͊̌é̴͚a̴͔̥͆̂c̸̪̳̔͝h̷̖̞̃̎ ̶̢͔̅͐ę̸̘̈́̕v̸̝͙̈̊e̷̗͚͋ṙ̴̞̜y̸͕̤̒ǫ̸͕̉̔n̸̯̄e̵̥̠̓͗ ̷̢̧̄h̸̟͗o̴̺̩̅w̷̝͌ ̵͚̈́́t̷̖̍̀o̵̠͝ ̴͖̍͠ͅp̸̡̞̎̌r̸̞̝͋͘o̶̎̎͜p̵̰̉ͅę̶̛̔r̸̦̻̂ļ̷̳̏ÿ̷̭̺́ ̵͚̗̅͘ŕ̶͎̇e̷̛̯͊s̸͔̃̄p̸͘ͅe̵̢̘̍ĉ̷̺̜̄ţ̷͗̕ͅ ̷̩͉͆t̸̥͔̔̐h̸̻̊e̴̝͘̕ ̸͉́͂ ̸͓̱͌́a̴̢̓n̶̺̺͂̋c̸̗͋͜ị̶̀̀ḛ̷̭̀͊n̷̳͍̾t̸͓̭͠s̷̩͆͛.
I suggest you start with etiquette.”
There was definitely another voice layered with Phantom’s, it was a feminine voice that was exactly a perfect fifth above Phantom’s own. Danny tilted his head and looked at the occultist with a grin that looked like a feral saber-toothed cat before disappearing. Constantine turned to look at Superman who was being helped to his feet by Wonder Woman and Batman.
“Clark how the absolute fuck did you manage to piss off the King of the Infinite Realms before we even sent a delegation to smooth things over with him, you absolute wanker!”

WIP Wednesday
The season may have ended by I'm still working on this Pam/Ellen fic, although this bit is some of Dani and Ellen catching up. I finally checked out the Time Capsule, and not only did it make me miss Gordo and Tracy again but made me sympathise for Danny. But it's an amazing bit of interactive world building, it's spurring me on to write this.
Extract from: “The Greatest Journey: A Memoir” by Ellen Wilson
[I wanted to see Danielle privately before the ceremony. She may have been the first American on Mars, the first woman, but to me she will aways be the bubbly young ASCAN I first met in Houston.
"I’m so sorry, for putting you at risk," I said.
"Risk. Risk is our business…" she said, quoting Captain Kirk from Star Trek, one of her favourite shows for obvious reasons. Then she added, in that sweet Southern drawl I adored, "…Desky."
Desky was our shared nickname for one other, from our days in astronaut training. We all worked hard, we had to but it’s fair to say that me and Danielle were the teacher’s pets of the group. Gradually it grew from a classroom term of endearment but a reminder we would invoke when either one of us was getting too fixated and instead remember to not take things too seriously.
But even with a cheeky smile from Dani Poole, I could see the pain that hid behind her eyes. We played a game of chicken with Helios and the Soviets to be the first to land on the Martian surface, a game that cost three people their lives. Sacrifices, it would later turn out, to be entirely for nothing. Four more people would lose their lives as the first pioneers remained stranded for 15 months with the barest of rations.
My time manning Jamestown alone doesn’t even begin to compare.
I believed then, as I do now that competition spurs us on, that sacrifice is an unfortunate consequence of progress. But looking into Danielle’s eyes, I wondered whether it truly was worth the cost. Whether we had gone too far, too fast. Maybe the Moon should’ve been enough. But once again I was taking the easy way out, not being there in the action but sitting behind a desk (even if that desk was in the White House) knowing that my lunar glory days were assured, I would be denying others their own incredible journeys into the cosmos.
The scars we carry, whether they be physical or mental mark us indelibly; they never go away but they also don’t get any bigger either. But we can grow, and change and build new experiences so that our scars can become a smaller part of us.
And if Congress decided to gut NASA what would that mean for Danielle’s sacrifice? Of Will Tyler’s and Kelly Baldwin’s and all of the others, not just me, who have come before to provide a better future for Earth. We had come too far to stop now. It was as true then as it was in 1969. Progress is never assured, what is easily given can just as easily be taken away.]
#wip wednesday#for all mankind#I did shamelessly nick the nickname from Mel and Hugh on taskmaster#but it was cute and they're goals#nothing's gonna beat 'hi bob' though

The last time the U.S. enacted major immigration reform was the Immigration Reform and Control Act in 1986. Since then, little has been done to fix what has become a broken system despite heated debate at the national, state, and local levels.
Unfortunately, the immigration debate has also become increasingly disconnected from the exigencies of the U.S. economy, even in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic in which worker shortages and labor market dysfunction have become increasingly glaring. Worse still, the aging U.S. workforce and structural shifts toward a more service-oriented economy will likely deepen much of this dysfunction unless policymakers can agree to major reforms to shore up the U.S. workforce.
This report aims to support these necessary reforms by highlighting the areas of the economy that are most in need of workers. Importantly, our approach not only highlights occupations that are—and will continue to be—in greatest demand, but also the occupations that are most complementary to the existing workforce, ensuring that efforts to meet these labor market needs will support all workers. At the core is a framework that we call the Occupational Opportunity Network, which identifies strategic occupations that will be in high demand for the next decade; are historically immigrant intensive; and have a high degree of complementarity with other occupations. In short, we define highly complementary occupations as those that are central to the U.S. workforce in the sense that they are used as inputs to many different industries and, within those industries, tend to augment the employment of other workers.
This framework can support immigration reform efforts in Congress and the executive branch—for instance, when considering the scale of any expansion in the number of H1B (specialty, high education) and H2 (temporary services) visa categories or in devising new policies, possibly including some of those that we discuss at the end of the report.
We show that the H2B visa program should be expanded to accommodate increased hiring of hospitality workers, drivers, construction workers, and care workers. Similarly, the H1B visa program should be expanded to accommodate increased hiring of health care workers, executives, and engineers, among others.
It is important to note at the outset that the jobs that we identify as high-value needs for the economy are not intended to be used as explicit targets for policy. Immigration system reforms will necessarily need to be broad-based, and we assume that the market will allocate workers most efficiently, an assumption that is bolstered by research showing that immigrants are highly efficient equilibrators of labor markets. This report is instead meant to outline the nature and scale of the workforce problems that the U.S. currently faces and to highlight the effects that different types of reforms will likely have in alleviating the wide-ranging labor market dysfunction that exists.
We begin by describing the current U.S. labor market context, noting the important distortions caused by the pandemic and their relationship to the immigrant workforce. Next, we present our detailed framework, the Occupational Opportunity Network. Finally, we offer some practical policy applications.

Here’s a question bc u ship daemon n his niece, how do you justify it? How is it any different than a porn video of a niece and uncle having sex? I’m not trying to be mean here I’m just trying to understand why it feels like a lot of people only ship them bc they’re hot but if they weren’t people would find it all gross like you would with incest porn (especially with an adult and a minor) the only reasons I’ve gotten from people is that it’s fictional so it’s okay but then I just ?? So is porn yet it’s still disgusting??
okay let's get into it even though there's literally a post that goes around weekly about how writing something doesn't condone something bc, you know, FICTION.
Am into uncle/niece incest? NO. It's an unfortunate element of their relationship. I like them together. I like their dynamic. They are filmed in a way that emphasizes their longing/tension.
The problem here is media illiteracy. A lot of people have a hard time separating fiction and IRL. I feel like so many readers need to be morally superior in cases like this in order to make people feel bad about their own ships.
Do I condone anything I write? No (except fucking four dudes at once bc cool)
In the world of Westeros, Targaryens marry their family members. It's not ideal, but it is what it is. Jon was Dany's nephew. Aegon the Conqueror married BOTH of his sisters. Jamie and Cersei were twins (i know i know they're lannisters but i digress). There is an interesting dynamic there that I enjoy exploring. IT doesn't mean I want to fuck my uncle and it doesn't mean that I want you to fuck your uncle. Whatever.
This is a fantasy world and the morals are different. The culture is different. Rhaenyra is also not a minor. There is certainly a dramatic age gap, but she's not a child.
I'm not sure why you want people to prove why a fictional couple is morally okay? Is anyone on Game of Thrones morally okay? Pretty sure the fic I wrote emphasized how toxic Rhaenyra and Daemon are together. I'm not highlighting that they should escape Westeros and run for Congress and be the face of the future.
Fandom deals with morally grey shit. Fanfic/fiction allows us to explore all sorts of situations that we'd never experience in reality. It is what it is. There is a shocking amount of barely 18 girls/middle-aged men fics EVERYWHERE and you don't see me raising my pitchfork and burning writers at the stake. People are allowed to write what they want. Point blank. If you don't like it then don't read and certainly don't come into someone's inbox and call them disgusting.
I'm pulling from a reddit user in r/fanfiction (raraenocts) but they said: if you make fiction responsible for the moral instruction of society, how are you any different from the dead scandalized rich white dudes you claim to be rebelling against...who said novels were dangerous as an emerging form/genre bc women would be too easily addled by all this exposure to fantasy and lose touch with reality...
Purity culture is on the rise and that's something you shouldn't condone.

Queen live at Super Bowl in Sun City, Bophuthatswana - October 5, 1984
(x)
Queen played nine shows in a South African banustan at the height of apartheid. The band stated at the time that they were not a political band, maintaining their desire to tread as much worldwide ground as possible, and that these concerts were played to mixed audiences. Tickets were priced at 26 Rands (about $15 US at the time), which may not have been reasonable for most, considering the poverty of the black masses at the time. But plenty of tickets were given away for free, ensuring at least some of the audiences would be mixed.
Brian May said how he felt the shows did a lot of bridge building, and how they met musicians of both colours. Roger Taylor pointed out how I Want To Break Free had become something of an anthem for the African National Congress movement, and how Another One Bites The Dust was hugely popular with the black population of South Africa. Regardless of the band's overall intentions, the concerts landed Queen on the United Nations cultural blacklist as they broke an international boycott.
Shortly after the shows, Brian explained: "We're totally against apartheid and all it stands for, but I feel we did a lot of bridge building. We actually met musicians of both colours. They all welcomed us with open arms. The only criticism we got was from outside of South Africa." Here is an interview with him on the subject from a few years later. Roger later stated that the South African concerts were a mistake, but added: "The black and the white communities were delighted that we'd gone there. We'd had a huge hit in the black market in South Africa with I Want To Break Free and Brian went and presented the Soweto Music Award."
In 2003, Brian May and Roger Taylor became strong supporters of former president Nelson Mandela's 46664 campaign, playing a prominent role in the organization of concerts for the cause.
The other nights in South Africa, all at the same venue, were on October 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19 and 20. Some accounts say a tenth show was performed on October 10, but this is unconfirmed.
A local crew member who worked most of the shows recalls that Mercury's vocal exchanges with the audience were long, and that they were eating out of the palm of his hand. He adds that the band rehearsed extremely hard upon arrival, as they were a bit rusty from having had a week off.
The pictures were taken by Danie van der Merwe. It's unknown which night they are from, but they were apparently taken during Hammer To Fall and Jailhouse Rock respectively.
An article written about the paradigm shifting concerts in South America in 1981 stated, "After eight years of winning, they needed a new challenge if their touring career was not to stagnate." The shows in South Africa were equally new territory for the band, but after all the political backlash they encountered upon returning home to England, not even the massive headlining Rock In Rio shows early next year would revitalize the band. Touring became a drag throughout 1985, and if it weren't for Live Aid, Queen certainly may have split up.

Fuck Hodge
This has been the most painful part in the entire fic so far 😭😭😭
THE END
Trudeau 🥰
“I’m proud of you, Max,” Alec tells his son during dinner. “You finished your internship with no incidents.”
That's my chaotic baby!!!
“Which is ironic considering he is sleeping with the senator’s daughter,” Max snickers.
They are soulmates leave them alone 🥰
He completes his nightly ritual of going through the Magnus Bane tag on Twitter.
Papi you need help! I do too!
“It’s Selena,” Jace whispers.
Oh no!! What happened??? I can't take more pain today!!
Now when Magnus is not okay, he makes sure to show it.
They press on the front doorbell and wait. Max is bouncing up and down on his feet lightly.
Oh Max... are you nervous about seeing David?
The black sphynx with ice blue eyes regards Alec carefully and lets out a low hiss. Alec is pretty sure this cat is from hell.
“You’re angry,” Max says.
Of course he is!!
Oh look at that they spoke to each other 😍 my ship is sailing 🥰
They never did find her though.
Let's find Brooklyn, I already love her!!
It hurts him to think of them as two sides and not one.
Besides, Hodge had left the country and Alec hadn’t been able to track him down ever since.
He is alive??????? Nooooo!!!
Theoretically at least.
Not for me, I'll kill him for real
It has become one of Alec’s least favorite words.
And mine
Red Fucking Herring.
We should make a list of cursed words
Alec immediately hates this plan.
I love this plan... it comes from Izzy THE QUEEN it'll be fine
Alec is almost considering it. But then Magnus decides to break his heart by saying, “Isabelle. I’m seeing someone.”
Fuck Shinyun
He stops listening when Magnus refers to him as “other people”.
Alec will be thinking about this kiss for the rest of his life.
Oh Alexander this is going to hurt so good
Izzy is grinning at Alec now. Alec is going to kill her later.
No, you won't!
Rafeeeee... you sweet child, why do you have to be so perfect???
“Right. Right,” Izzy says, looking a little disappointed. “This does make a lot of sense.”
Me too Izzy, me too!!
“We might not be married,” Magnus tells him. “But we are still family.”
Remarry!!!
I too would love to watch that morning show
This chapter was painful but amazing as always, thank you
❤❤❤❤
Istg you have such Alec energy (complimentary)

Olympic WoHo Newsletter 2/11
Hopefully, we’re actually back on schedule now. We’re two games into the quarterfinals, and two spots in the semifinals remain. Czechia and Sweden are out of the tournament, leaving Japan as the only Group B team remaining - whose fate is to be decided at 3:40 AM tomorrow.
NEWS
Katie Strang reported earlier today that USA Hockey has been reported to Congress for potential interference in US Center for SafeSport investigation, and you can find the article here. Not necessarily Olympic news, but important.
While it’s been assumed, this article from USA Hockey officially confirms 2018 gold medalist Emily Pfalzer Matheson’s retirement.
Game recaps below the cut, as always, and you can find the link to our previews there as well.
GAME RECAPS
USA [4], CZE [1]: Czechia falls to USA in their first Olympics, while USA was the first team to move on to the semifinals. The relatively close score was almost entirely due to Czech goalie Klara Peslarova’s heroics, only letting in 3 goals—the 4th coming on an empty net in the dying seconds of the game. The final shots read 59-6 in favor of USA, but Peslarova kept it tied at 1-1 until 6:49 into the 3rd, keeping the Czechs in the game. USA struggled all around, from not being able to convert on many of their chances to Dani Cameranesi’s 5 min major (and subsequent ejection) for boarding. Michaela Pejzlova scored first for Czechia, before the 4 unanswered from Knight, Stecklein (GWG), Harmon, and Coyne-Schofield (EN). Full game details via the IIHF here.
CAN [11], SWE [0]: Canada will be the second team moving onto the semifinals, with the blowout win many anticipated, with a full 60 minutes of dominance. After Brianne Jenner’s early tally, Sweden was able to keep the score at 1-0 through 18 min of play, before Sarah Fillier continued her impressive Olympic debut and scored on the PP to make it 2-0, then adding another just 36 seconds later. On the PP again, Rattray added another to close out the 1st. Canada topped their 4 goal 1st with 5 in the 2nd, including Emily Clark’s first goal of the tournament on the PP. Sweden would pull goaltender Emma Soderberg for 18 year old Ida Boman, who held off the Canadians for more than half of the 3rd before Jenner completed her hat trick, soon followed by Fillier recording her own. Full game details via the IIHF here.
QUARTERFINAL PREVIEWS
You can find the previews for the next two games, Russia vs Sweden + Finland vs Japan, in yesterday’s newsletter.
SCHEDULE
2/11 11:10 P.M. Russia vs Switzerland (A4 v A5)
2/12 3:40 A.M. Finland vs Japan (A3 v B1)

Passchendaele WW2 Extension - The Fear of the Unknown
June 10, 1944
Saying goodbye to Frances was hard after they spent the day of the 6th together grieving and writing home, being each other’s only comfort in the face of true despair. They held each other one last time before Charles had to return to his squadron, wrapped up tightly in each other’s familiar embrace and shared a few tears and extra squeezes before letting go. Frances left her second little brother with a kiss to his cheek – having to rise onto her tiptoes slightly to do so – and then took his face in her hands and made him swear through his tear-filled eyes to be careful out there.
Charlie could only whimper out a breathy, “I promise” to her serious expression. Frances tucked Richard’s gold ring into Charlie’s hand, closed his fingers around it without a word, and they parted ways.
Charlie was returned to the RAF after the initial landings at Normandy and he was soon assigned to a singleton Spitfire on the force. Flying alone was nothing less than brutal and he constantly missed his co-pilot, his best friend, and his brother. But he wore the gold ring on his right pinky, a piece of jewelry he never thought much of when it came to his brother who received it for his 18th birthday and rarely took it off, but the engraving of RB on the top of the band meant more to Charlie than he even knew possible.
The fight for Europe was far from over and Allies fought long and hard to push back the Nazi armies back into Germany. Charlie tried to focus on his work but it was difficult when his heart was still in that empty field on the coast of France. It seemed as if the rest of his squadron was perfectly fine, going about their day and fighting through in air battles like it was no big deal, but Charlie’s chest had felt so tight for days and no one seemed to care. Just another pilot lost in battle.
His reactions were slower and his attention wasn’t as strong, and his officers’ attempts to comfort him and convince him to keep his mind on his work didn’t seem to help. One flight in particular, it was cloudy and bad weather and the sky filled with gunfire made Charlie’s head more muddled than it already felt. He sat alone in his cockpit and flew his jet and tried to do his best to keep himself in the air. Between the weather and his mess of emotions swirling around in his mind, it was truly not much of a surprise that a few shots to his wing and he was spiraling towards the ground, pulling his parachute just barely in time.
June 13, 1944
Daniel hadn’t moved from his bed in five days. He struggled to eat the meals that Elizabeth brought him and he only got up to use the washroom in the middle of the night when the house was sleeping. Daniel wanted nothing to do with anyone at that moment and he wallowed in his sorrow for days on end from the moment Elizabeth got him into bed after fainting from the intensity of his panic attack. He simply laid in bed with the blackout curtains pulled and didn’t move.
Elizabeth had been in contact with Christine a lot and the women spoke over the phone in hushed tones, Elizabeth comforting her best friend the best she could through her grief of losing her son, and both of them sharing details of their husbands’ own sorrows. Corbyn was more determined to keep life as it was always before, Christine had said, as he continued getting up and getting dressed and going about his days but he never touched the newspaper or the radio and the emptiness that filled his light eyes was near chilling to his wife. They were just trying to get past day by day.
Evelyn returned downstairs that morning with a cold, still mostly filled dinner plate in hand and set it on the kitchen counter beside her mother. The women shared sad, knowing expressions and Elizabeth scraped the cold food into the garbage to wash the plate. The daughter went to retrieve the mail from the porch while her mother cleaned up the dishes from Daniel’s leftover dinner and their own breakfast and Evelyn froze on the porch as the letter on the top was addressed to them from the Royal Air Force.
It wasn’t in Charlie’s handwriting and Evelyn felt sick the second she realized what it could be. She rushed back inside without a word and thrust the letter at her mother. Elizabeth’s face fell completely at her first glance at the letter and the women huddled close right there in the kitchen as she ripped it open.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Seavey,
This letter is to regretfully inform you that your son, Charles Seavey, RAF Squadron 19, has been reported missing in action since 10 June 1944 over Germany.
I know that added distress is caused by failure to receive more information or details. Therefore, I wish to assure you that at any time additional information is received it will be transmitted to you without delay. The terms of ‘missing in action’ is used only to indicate that the whereabouts or status of an dividual is not immediately known. It is not intended to convey the impression that the case is closed. Every effort is to be continuously exerted to clear up the status of our personnel. Experience shows that many persons who have been reported missing in actions are subsequently reported as prisoners of war, but this information is furnished by countries with which are at war and thus the War Department and the Royal Air Force is helpless to expedite such reports. Congress has allowed continuation of force of pay and allowance to dependants of personnel being carried in a missing status.
Permit me to extend to you my heartfelt sympathy during this period of uncertainty.
Signed by the marshal of the RAF.
The master bedroom was dark and Elizabeth stood in the doorway with the letter in her hands and her eyes focused on the shape of her husband’s body under the blankets facing away from her.
“Daniel.” she called shakily. There was no answer. Elizabeth took a shaky inhale in preparation for what reaction he might have to the news, “Daniel, darling.”
He didn’t move.
Elizabeth shuffled over to the bed and walked around it to sit at his side where he was facing. His eyes were closed as if he were sleeping and she pet her hand through his tangled and almost shaggy brown hair.
“Darling, we need to have a little talk.” Elizabeth reached forward to switch on the bedside lamp and Daniel whimpered as the warm light burned into his tired eyes. He tucked his face farther under the blankets he had clutched in his hands.
Elizabeth glanced back down at the letter that was open in her hands, the paper quivering slightly as her hands trembled with anxieties, and she took another deep inhale. She rubbed her opposite hand over Daniel’s back and gave his shoulder a little squeeze.
“Can you listen to me, Dani?”
He barely gave her a half nod.
“I need to know that you’re going to be strong when I talk to you but that it’s okay to cry if you need to. You can’t shut down on us anymore, alright? We need you, darling.”
Daniel blinked his eyes open in confusion and he looked up at her under furrowed brows, waiting for her to continue as he shifted onto his back a little. Elizabeth took his hand in hers.
“We got a letter from the Royal Air Force this morning.” Elizabeth said gently.
Daniel’s entire body tensed.
“Charlie’s been reported missing. They don’t know where he is at the moment.” Elizabeth explained.
Daniel’s chest shuttered as he struggled to breathe.
Elizabeth patted his chest gently, “It’s okay. It doesn’t mean he’s gone. He’s just a little lost right now.”
She could see his blue eyes filling with fresh tears as he stared up at her. How much he looked like their little boy in that moment and she dropped her head to stare at her lap to keep herself from crying too.
“Lizzie.” Daniel whimpered.
“Yeah, darling?” Elizabeth sniffled, her voice trembling.
Daniel let out a small sob but he inhaled quickly to try and say what he needed to say before the tears took over, his bottom lip quivering as he breathed out a gentle, “Can you hold me?”
Elizabeth simply burst into tears, nodding as she shifted to lay next to him and he moved the sheets to welcome her under. The two parents cried together, arms wrapped tightly around each other as they laid frightened of the unknown. It had been a while since Daniel properly held her and Elizabeth wept into his chest with the feeling of relief it brought her, her head tucked under his chin and his strong arms engulfing her body under the warm sheets of their shared bed. But she held him right back, hands clinging onto the back of his shirt and kept him right up close against her with her legs tangled up in his.
The letter laid haphazardly on the other pillow, its contents staring at the ceiling right next to them as Daniel and Elizabeth cried themselves to sleep stemmed from exhaustion in each other’s arms.

The Mercenary Librarians are a team of three women, Nina, Dani and Maya, trying to hold together a small repository of information and help their community in a post-apocalyptic Atlanta some 60 years into the future, in a dystopian world where the BioTech giants have basically taken over everything. Approached by a team of ex-military mercenaries with a proposal to find a huge score of digitised information (the Rogue Library of Congress) Nina can’t resist, even though she knows there’s something shady about Captain Garrett Knox. Knox doesn’t want to sell the librarians out, but with his men’s biotech implants degrading by the day, he has no choice if he wants to save them all.
I really loved how badass Nina, Maya and Dani were. Genetically engineered and raised from birth to be weapons (in Nina and Dani’s case) and a living information repository (Maya) they were far more likely to ride to the rescue than need helping out themselves. Whereas Knox’s team were selected, enhanced and trained for their skills as adults (excluding tech geek Conall). Both teams have lost too many loved ones, suffered too much. None of them are prepared to give any quarter in the fight to save the rest… until they get to know each other and realise they’re more alike than they want to be.
The world is well realised - I understand it’s carried forward from a previous series which I haven’t read, but I had no problem understanding what was happening and the information was well conveyed, without info-dumping. There are a couple of very hot sex scenes, more than I’d really expect to find in a dystopian fantasy, but I don’t think it’s really a romance because while Knox and Nina are the primary two characters here, we spend a lot of time in the POV of everyone else… of all the characters featured, I think only the biohacker Luna, who spent most of the book off-screen as a hostage, didn’t get any POV chapters. There are a couple of other romantic pairings which look likely to be centred in the rest of this trilogy, although a couple of late-arriving characters might provide some curve balls in that respect. I’m very much looking forward to finding out, because I absolutely loved this. Five stars for a fantastic dystopian fantasy heavy on the romance.
Deal With The Devil is available now.

Native American Series - Oral History Program
By Dani Fulwiler (she/her/hers)
Oral Histories at the University Archives is a big deal. We have a dedicated program lead by Troy Reeves that currently encompasses over 1,500 interviews that touch on all aspects of the University’s history. This includes two oral histories by former faculty of the American Indian Studies program: Ada Deer and Gary Sandefur.
Image: Ada Deer, photograph by Norman Lenburg, September 7, 1978, S13856
Ada Deer, a member of the Menominee Nation, is an advocate and scholar who was an activist opposing the federal termination of tribes in the 1970’s. She served as assistant secretary of interior, head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, delegate to the United Nations Humans Rights committee, ran for the United States Congress, and so much more. During her time at UW- Madison she taught in the School of Social Work and served as the director of the American Indian Studies department. She continues to do work on the UW campus by participating in the Distinguished Lecture series and holds Emerita status and was the inaugural elder-in-resident at UW-Madison.

If you’d like to learn more about Ada and the amazing work she has done, listen to her oral history, visit her page at Wisconsin Women Making History, and check out her book Making a Difference: My Fight for Native Rights and Social Justice.
Image: Gary Sandefur, American Indian studies, photo by Jeff Miller, S09729
Gary Sandefur, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, is a scholar who has focused his work on public policy and populations. He has written many works on racial inequality, American Indians, and family based issues. At UW- Madison he served as Professor of Sociology, Associate Vice Chancellor, Interim Provost and Director of the American Indian Studies program. He was the first American Indian to be named Dean of Letters and Sciences at UW- Madison. He now serves as Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at Oklahoma State University.

Currently, Dr. Sandefur’s Oral History Program interview is restricted and will be until 2031. However, he has various publications and books available. A list of his books can be found here.
This is the fifth post in a continuing series where we will explore the archive’s collection on Native Americans and consider how we, as an archive, can do better in preserving this history.
