Ha. Finally. The black dog is a creature appearing in a lot of tales, mostly spawning near graveyards or churches. It is considered a bad omen, signaling the observer their near demise, and is most often described as a huge, dark dog with glowing eyes. I chose "Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito" - a phrase by Vergil, for this one. It means to not back off when facing misfortune, but be brave and face it. Seemed fitting since death is a misfortune no one can outrun. Also added is the name of Master Franz, who was a german executioner. He left a very interesting diary, telling about each and every person he has killed in his career, what exactly he did to them and which punishment was ordered for certain kinds of misbehaviour. He was very good at his job even though he didn't like it due to the stigma, very loyal to the city of Nürnberg and his family, and even reached the status of a "good burgher" thanks to his excellent service around 1616. To raise the status of an impure member of society in such a way and therefore the status of his family as well was an extraordinary occurence at the time.
