Some tidbits from The On1y One eps 1 and 4.
The scene in episode one where Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian are officially introduced to each other by their parents is actually quite funny.
When children respectfully greet elders they meet for the first time or haven't seen in a while, the elders will respond with guai (乖). It's said to acknowledge their good behavior. iQ's translation of good boy is better than Gaga's behave. Guai can also be used to tell a naughty child to behave, but in this scene, Jiang Tian is obviously being a little shit and purposely misinterpreting Sheng Wang's "call him ge?" as a greeting to an elder and responding with guai. The tone Jiang Tian uses is perfect. It's exactly how we old people say it to kids. 😂
In episode 4, when Gao Tianyang is amazed by Sheng Wang's question answering speed, he says kao (靠), which is actually closer to fuck than iQ's darn it or Gaga's damn.
Tumblr media
The pronunciation sounds like cow in English, and a cow is niu (牛) in Mandarin.
Tumblr media
Niu is also slang for awesome. So when Gao Tianyang spells out cow and says niu, he is making a pun and saying Sheng Wang is awesome. iQ got the pun part right but messed up the awesome part, and Gaga got the awesome part but left out the pun.
Tumblr media
Some background on Sheng Wang's pfp here.
Tumblr media
During the fight scene, people watching the series on iQ were confused about who was talking about Sheng Wang's mom because there was no subtitle for what the bully said under his breath. Gaga subtitled it, but only in English. There are no Chinese subs there for some reason.
Tumblr media
"Old Ding" (iQ) or "Uncle Ding" (Gaga) = ding lao tou (丁老頭).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an example of 丁老頭 😅 The 丁 is the nose.

Tomb of the Sea really hits differently when you've seen all the other dmbj dramas
Watched that one first, not realising it was part of a huge number of adaptations from the same work, and damn I missed out on a lot of stuff.
What hits hardest is Wu Xie telling Ma Rila not to called Li Cu 'Xiao-ge'. Just did not understand that on first watch, on this rewatch that hit me right in the feels, aaaaaaa
Other thoughts:
Aaaaaa so much character development!
Actually love Liang Wan. She's kind and she tries so hard.
Hei Xiazi my beloved <3
Su Wan, sweet bb boy (ok so Wang Haoxuan is why I watched this drama the first time around but I did not expect his character to be such a sweet, ridiculous Little Miracle Prince)
Actors from previous dmbj dramas recast as other characters absolutely blows my mind every damn time they appear. Or are you telling me that Lao Ma is actually Wu San Xing and Wang Can is actually Liu Sang/has clearly been reborn a million times??? (I haven't seen the Tomb of the Sea side stories, or Echo of Moonfall... and have no idea where to watch, halp???)
Su Nan's makeup. What brand and what magic is she using because that's hella long-lasting.
Always love Wang Pangzi <3
Rewatching after seeing the other dramas reaaaaaaally puts a different perspective on Wu Xie's character. First time around he was hard to understand, but this time less so.
The fuck was that last scene with Li Cu sitting in the classroom??? Did I miss something there??? Were we meant to get a second season or something that never appeared??? Am I just dumb???

Chapter 2434 Burns! Starlight Yuanming Holy Water enters the eyes! Subdue the power of death!
  Wang Teng was very clear that Venerable Zhumo had no intention of dying before. He was just infected by the darkness, he didn't turn into a dead thing, so how could he have the intention of death?
Ordinary creatures simply cannot bear this kind of death.
Once it invades the body, it will backfire on itself.
That is why it is said that the power of death is unique to the Bone Spirits.
But the word "unique" should be put in quotation marks, as some special races can possess it, such as the Bone Demon Tree and the Hades Clan!
Needless to say, the Hades Clan is even more terrifying than the Bone Spirit Clan.
And the Bone Demon Tree, after all, is actually related to the Bone Spirit Clan and is not considered a normal creature.
Therefore, there is definitely something wrong with the presence of death on Venerable Zhumo.
"It should have just appeared. What happened?"
At this time, Wang Teng was included in the immortal kingdom of Lord Zhumo and could not see the situation in the outside world at all.
Naturally, they didn't know that Venerable Tianyan, Ji Lao and others were also in a dilemma.
At this moment, he directly opened the [Eye of True Vision] and tried to look outside the Immortal Kingdom of God.
However……
"Fuck!"
A blinding light almost blinded him, and it also carried a sense of heat and darkness.
The entire Immortal Kingdom of God is like a huge dark and hot container.
Even if you look out from the inside, you will be burned and infected by that power.
To be more precise, it is more terrible when looking from the inside out.
Because all power is actually concentrated inside. If you look from the outside in, it will not be the case.
Wang Teng felt a stinging pain in his eyes, streaks of blood appeared in his eyeballs, and tears almost flowed out unconsciously.
The [Pupil of True Vision], which was at the Immortal level and had almost reached half of its attribute value, was actually unable to see through this Immortal Kingdom! Wang Teng was shocked, but he also understood a little.
Although his [Eye of True Vision] is said to be able to see through some things at the level of Immortal Venerables, it has not reached the perfect state of Immortal level after all.
However, this Immortal Kingdom of God is obviously too mysterious, and the power contained within it is the most core secret of the Immortal-level Venerables.
How could it be easily seen through?
"It seems that my [Eye of True Vision] is not strong enough."
Wang Teng sighed deeply in his heart, covered his slightly sore eyes, and circulated his own light power to heal the damage to his eyes.
But he soon discovered another problem. The burning sensation could not be eliminated and still existed.
It was as if a ball of flame was burning his eyeballs and would not stop until they were burned out.
"Damn it! I spent all day hunting geese, but I got pecked by a goose."
Wang Teng has always considered himself an expert at playing with fire, but today his eyes were burned by the flames, and the burns could not be easily dispelled.
If this gets out, it will be a huge disgrace.
"The power of fire can be restrained by water or ice."
Wang Teng’s mind raced and he immediately came up with a solution.
He has many tricks up his sleeve, and dealing with the mere power of fire is easy for him.
For example, the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water that I just got is the power of light and water, which is just the right amount to restrain the power of darkness and heat.
Humph, you want to destroy my precious eyes? No way.
Wang Teng immediately mobilized the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water within the Chaos Star Domain.
That mass of strange liquid suddenly moved, instantly turning into countless water droplets, rushing towards the outside of the chaotic star field.
The next moment, the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water appeared in Wang Teng's body, and under his control, carefully flowed into his eyes.
Although they are rare objects of light and water, and relatively gentle, they are still rare objects after all, and no one dares to be careless with them.
If anything goes wrong accidentally, he won't have anywhere to cry.
It turns out that, be careful…oh no, Starlight Yuanming Holy Water is very useful.
Silky and smooth, Wang Teng felt as if his eyes were wrapped by a stream of cool water, which was extremely comfortable.
It's like giving your eyes a professional SPA!
If someone saw his eyes at this moment, they would find that his eyes had turned into… a starry sky! [True Starry Sky]jpg is bright and shining, dotted with stars, revealing depth and mystery.
It's like… wearing cosmetic contact lenses! However, Wang Teng didn't pay attention to these external fancy things. At this moment, he clearly felt that the darkness and burning feeling were fading.
“It really works!”
He smiled slightly in his heart, felt completely relieved, and increased the power of the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water.
With his eyes completely covered, Wang Teng looked at the outside world through the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water and suddenly let out a light exclamation.
"The power of the Immortal Kingdom of God doesn't seem to affect my eyes."
He felt that he had found the highlight.
Although he did not try to peek into the Immortal Kingdom of God like before, his [Eye of True Vision] was still open and he could see a lot of things.
Even so, his eyes did not feel the slightest burden.
"Do you want to try again?"
A bold idea came to my mind.
"Just give it a try. Anyway, I have the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water, so I'm not afraid of getting hurt."
Wang Teng used the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water to heal his eyes, and immediately felt that he was fine again. He decided to try his luck again.
He looked outside the Immortal Kingdom of God again.
The power of the Immortal Kingdom was peeled off layer by layer, and Wang Teng saw many things, the Force, the power of the domain, the power of the origin law…
In an instant, runes appeared, appearing red in color and emitting unparalleled heat.
These runes are densely spread throughout the Immortal Kingdom of God, interweaving into chains, like laws and orders, forming this Immortal Kingdom of God.
Wang Teng also felt the burning sensation again and immediately activated the power of the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water.
A soft and cool power spread out from the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water, offsetting the scorching power.
Wang Teng continued to spy.
But soon, another even hotter force came, and the temperature seemed to increase several times.
Layer upon layer, as if there is no end!
Wang Teng's expression changed slightly. This was the result of the integration of the immortal power. It was no longer just the power of the original law.
He immediately mobilized his own immortal matter, transformed it into specks of light, and instantly merged into his eyes.
The next moment, his eyes suddenly took on an indescribable meaning, as if they had experienced the vicissitudes of life and were immortal.
The immortal power from the Immortal Kingdom of God was immediately blocked.
Wang Teng was just like a general who could stop the enemy and block the water, and he dissolved the forces in the Immortal Kingdom of God one by one.
He was indeed too impatient before and wanted to spy on the Immortal Kingdom of God all at once, which naturally led to the most fierce counterattack.
"Um?!!"
When Wang Teng blocked the impact of the immortal power, another force appeared. This time it was the power of darkness, and it also carried the meaning of death and decay.
Wang Teng was shocked, but did not dare to delay. He immediately mobilized the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water, trying to block it with the power of light.
However, something even more surprising happened to him.
The power of light was actually ineffective! The dark power of death directly invaded, causing the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water to become dim, as if it had been corroded and decayed.
“This power…”
Wang Teng was confused and wondered something. The Bone Demon Tree! The Dark God Clan! These are the two most special races.
When he first encountered them, Wang Teng also felt this power of death and decay.
If he didn't possess the [Underworld Body] that could withstand that kind of power, the consequences would be disastrous.
"It seems that I can only use the [Underworld Body]."
Wang Teng's eyes flashed and he made a decision in his heart.
Now that Venerable Zhumo has been infected by darkness and has not much consciousness, as long as he is cautious, no one will notice that he has used the [Underworld Body].
This kind of physique is extremely advanced and good at hiding.
As long as Wang Teng doesn't want to be exposed, ordinary people can't tell anything at all.
In fact, he can also use the origin of life and soul to resist. The worst that can happen is that he will consume more and then pick up attribute bubbles to replenish it later.
But now the battle situation is intense, he does not want to consume too much life essence and soul essence, so using the [Underworld Body] is the best choice.
"Underworld Body, open!"
Wang Teng muttered silently in his heart and immediately activated the physique of the Hades God Clan.
Suddenly, a strange and sacred power flowed through his body and finally gathered in his eyes, causing a hint of purple to appear in his eyes.
This purple color is extremely noble and sacred, full of majesty.
At this moment, Wang Teng's blood seemed to have undergone some incredible changes, from an ordinary person to a special race with powerful blood.
However, this aura was suppressed by Wang Teng again. It only flashed for a moment and did not leak out.
"I wonder if it will conflict with the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water?" Wang Teng was a little worried.
Both the light force and the dark force are mobilized at the same time, and they are both top-notch ones. It would be a lie to say that I am not nervous.
Although he can balance the power of light and the power of darkness, it is ultimately just the most ordinary force.
Things like the power of domain and the power of original laws are much more difficult.
Regardless of whether it is the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water or the Hades Body, they are both the most difficult means to deal with. If they are not controlled well, they may explode.
Fortunately, the worst did not happen.
The Hades Body and the Starlight Yuanming Holy Water actually got along well, but there was a slight repulsion, which made people feel very uncomfortable.
"It's okay! It's okay! You still listen to me." Wang Teng breathed a sigh of relief.
At this moment, with the blessing of the [Underworld Body], the power of death and decay suddenly… became confused! Yes, it was indeed confused.
Who is the enemy?
Who is our own? The power of death and decay can no longer tell them apart.
When it entered Wang Teng's body, it was like returning to the mother's body.
Not only did it not hurt him, but it was absorbed and transformed by the Hades Body and became Wang Teng's power.
"Okay, it's solved!"
Wang Teng continued to look outside the Immortal Kingdom of God.
After a while, he finally uncovered the mystery of this immortal kingdom of God and had a glimpse of the operation of the power within it.
Very mysterious! Countless times more mysterious than the world master's small world! So mysterious that he couldn't see through it completely, and could only glimpse a little bit.
And he still has a long way to go before he can fully understand.
Now is not the time to analyze the Immortal Kingdom of God.
In fact, it is too early for him. He is only at the domain lord level and is still a long way from reaching the immortal level.
"I see."
At this moment, Wang Teng finally saw the situation outside the Immortal Divine Kingdom. He suddenly understood what was going on.
The power of death comes from the black hole!
Moreover, it has spread throughout the void, trapping the Mechanical Clan's True God, Ji Lao and others.
"This power of death is also unsolvable for warriors of the Bright Universe. They can only resist it with the origin of life and soul."
Wang Teng's eyes narrowed slightly, and he began to worry about Ji Lao and the others.
The origin of life and the origin of soul will be consumed.
They are not like him who can pick up attribute bubbles to replenish themselves. Once they consume too much, the problem will be serious.
“Up to now, the strange existence in the black hole has not yet fully appeared!”
Wang Teng was shocked. He wondered what could emit such a powerful force of death.
It is even more terrifying than the Bone Demon Tree he encountered before.
The Bone Demon Tree is a god-level existence. Even the power of death it exudes cannot compare with the strange existence in this black hole. It can be seen how terrifying it is.
He just wanted to pick up the attribute bubble over there, but was interrupted by Venerable Zhumo.
Otherwise, we might be able to get some clues through the attribute bubbles.
"I don't know if my spiritual power can get out of this immortal kingdom."
Wang Teng had an idea and wanted to give it a try.
But at this moment, his expression changed and he quickly looked into the distance.
The Candle Demon Venerable was gone! Such a huge body disappeared in the flames at this moment, as if it did not exist at all, and there was no trace of it at all.
Wang Teng opened his [Eye of True Vision] and scanned the surroundings, but he couldn't find the figure of Venerable Candle Demon.
“Damn it!”
Although he had just been spying on the Immortal Divine Kingdom, his attention to Venerable Candle Demon had not diminished in the slightest.
But he didn't expect that Venerable Zhumo was hiding right under his nose.
Can you imagine an immortal-level master hiding himself and becoming the sixth in command?
"When exactly?" Wang Teng frowned, feeling suspicious.
In his eyes, the figure of Venerable Zhumo had always been there, but when he looked more closely, he disappeared at some point, as if it was just an illusion.
"Hallucination?!"
Wang Teng’s thoughts flashed through his mind, and all kinds of ideas raced through his mind.
"No, it's not an illusion. If I'm not mistaken, it should be… evil thoughts!"
He immediately thought of something and reacted.
What is the best thing for the Candle Demon Venerable? It is the meaning of madness!
Now that it has been infected by darkness, this madness will be even more bizarre and contain dark characteristics, making it more hidden and difficult to detect.
"Evil thoughts! Humph!"
Wang Teng snorted coldly, and with a thought, he activated the [Candle Dragon Demonic Intention].
A faint demonic aura suddenly appeared in his body, spreading from his forehead.
"Got you!"
In just a moment, Wang Teng sensed a powerful demonic intention. He immediately looked towards the void on the other side, then flashed and retreated.
Mad has already attacked.
Boom! Almost at the moment when he pulled back, the void shook, and a terrifying flame burst out at high temperature, sweeping over.
The temperature was too terrifying. Even though Wang Teng was covered in three kinds of heavenly and earthly fire, he still felt the burning sensation all over his body. (End of this chapter)

So when the Word of Honor concert was first announced, there were lots of inside jokes in the fandom about how a live concert would even work when the entire cast is unhinged as hell and that every single one of them made it their own personal mission to make sure everyone knows that WenZhou are in love and married, censorship be damned.
One of the predicted outcomes was someone's microphone getting cut off mid-speech. But who was it going to be? The mad man Zhang Zhehan himself? Huang Youming with his wedding table jokes? Chen Zihan with her top trending wedding edit? Gong Jun the human collander? Wang-Laoshi and his blatant RPS agenda?
Well it was none of them because it was freaking Heizi-Laoshi (Gao Chong) of all people.
Tumblr media
It started on the first day of the concert, when the 5 Lakes Alliance uncles shocked the fandom by being the first of the cast members to crack. They wrote 老温 Lao Wen ❤️ 老周 Lao Zhou on their whiteboards and held it up behind the unsuspecting Wenzhou's heads.
Tumblr media
On the second day of the concert, people noticed that their seats were moved to the opposite side, as far away from Wenzhou as the seating arrangements allowed.
Tumblr media
But what Youku and the concert staff didn't know at that time is that distance does not matter in the face of a determined Heizi-Laoshi. He had a big booming voice and was certainly not afraid to use it. Unstoppable Force (Heizi-Laoshi) versus Immovable Object (Censorship)
MC: "Heizi-Laoshi is going to show us his talent!"
Heizi-Laoshi: "YES I AM GOING TO SING A SONG AS A TRIBUTE TO OUR WENZHOU'S LOVE!"
Tumblr media
Heizi-Laoshi, after singing: "I WISH THAT THEY WILL ACCOMPANY EACH OTHER FOREVER UNTIL THEIR HAIRS TURN GRAY AND WHI-" *mic gets cut off*
MCs, desperately trying to drown out the crowd's screaming: "THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU HEIZI-LAOSHI, THANK YOU!!!!"
Tumblr media
The only thing more impressive than Heizi-Laoshi's determination to literally scream out Wenzhou's love to the world is how casually Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun reacted to the whole thing. No embarrassment, no awkwardness. Just pure chaotic approval.
And then Huang Youming, determined not to be outdone, declares that he will be singing a song as well.
Tumblr media
Huang Youming: "I'M GOING TO SING A SONG BY MY IDOL JAY CHOU"
MCs: "Okay!" ☺️
Huang Youming: THE TITLE OF THE SONG IS "A SECRET THAT CANNOT BE TOLD"
MCs: "HUH????"
In the end, none of the parts described in this post were included in the livestream's replay version. No doubt the funniest thing about all this is that everyone expected the younger cast members to go wild, but it was the uncles who ended up scandalizing everyone. Huang Youming was expected, but literally NO ONE saw Heizi-Laoshi coming. Bless his shipper heart.

Hi! How about Wang Meng as Chen Yuzhi's troublesome older brother? Our dear doctor struck him with his bravery (or stupidity), because not everyone can keep cool when an axe is pressed to your neck. After Yuzhi saved Wang Meng's life, the former bandit becomes attached to him and considers him his younger brother. He is amused by how Jian Yuelou circles around the doctor, not daring to admit that he is head over heels in love with him. Jingcheng knew that if someone offended Chen Yuzhi, they would deal with Jian Yuelou. But now Wang Meng has been added to the fears of drug dealers. He also always saves our doctor when the police don't have time, which infuriates Yuelo. One day, Yuzhi wanted to hunt down the bandits alone, but Wang Meng won't let him. Thank you very much, he likes the city he lives in and he doesn't want Jian Yuelou to burn him in a fit of rage if something happens to Yuzhi. When Dr. Chen doesn't want to listen to arguments about why it's not safe to go there alone, Wang Meng's patience ran out. He throws the stubborn doctor on his shoulder and goes to the police station. Everyone is shocked by what they saw, Yuzhi shouts to be put on the ground and hits Wang Meng on the back. But the former bandit calmly reaches the police station, enters Yuelou's office and hands over the doctor with the words: "Watch your boyfriend yourself, I have enough worries as it is. And in general, if something happens to him, I'll kill you," he leaves. Jian Yuelou was speechless from shock for a minute, and when he came to, Wang Meng had already left (he is not suicidal, thank you very much). I want Wang Meng's interaction with Song Rong and Sun Yongren, how they will look after Chen Yuzhi together, how they will argue with each other.
Oh my god, I love this. Girl, you just keep giving me all the good headcanons
When Wang Meng meets Chen Yuzhi for the first time, he’s rather shocked by the tenacity the young doctor possesses, declaring that he would treat people, no matter if they were “good” or “evil”
He’s even more shocked when Chen Yuzhi saves him from Jiang Yuelou’s gun once he’s rescued
After being shocked by the doctor, twice, Wang Meng decides that Chen Yuzhi is now family because only family does the kind of insane shit that Chen Yuzhi does
Once he declares Chen Yuzhi family, he makes it known to the criminal underworld that if someone touches Chen Yuzhi, they’re pretty much fucked
Chen Yuzhi, of course, doesn’t realize that he’s now not only under the protection of Jing City’s most feral and unhinged police officer, Jiang Yuelou, but he’s also under the protection of one of Jing City’s most influential drug bosses (considering now that Lao Huo and Zhao Jingming have been eliminated)
Since he has no job like Chen Yuzhi or Jiang Yuelou, he’s able to just sort of…lurk and keep an eye on Chen Yuzhi to make sure that no one tries to mess with him and because of this observation, he notices how often Jiang Yuelou hangs out with Chen Yuzhi
Now, Wang Meng’s not particularly fond of Jiang Yuelou, you know the man tried to arrest him god knows how many times, but he sees the way Chen Yuzhi’s eyes light up whenever he sees the police officer so he can’t like…completely hate him but he can fuck with him
Anytime Chen Yuzhi get kidnapped or captured (which still happens a lot even with the dual threat of Jiang Yuelou and Wang Meng), Wang Meng normally ends up saving Chen Yuzhi before Jiang Yuelou can which just pisses Jiang Yuelou off to no end because damn it, he’s supposed to be the one saving Chen Yuzhi, not some fucking drug dealer
Then one day Wang Meng sees Chen Yuzhi heading out of the clinic without his kit heading in the direction that’s not the police station and he’s immediately on high alert
He quickly goes after him and grabs him, forcing him to stop
“Where are you going?”
Chen Yuzhi looks at him and huffs
“You heard about those bandits taking those kids, right?”
Wang Meng nods before his eyes widen
“Tell me you’re not going after them”
Chen Yuzhi nods
“I am”
Wang Meng let out a soft groan; what is it with Chen Yuzhi and being a self-sacrificing dumbass?  Does he not want to live?  Does he want Wang Meng to fucking die from Jiang Yuelou’s wrath if he finds out that Wang Meng let Chen Yuzhi go off on his own?  He quite likes living, you know
“No, you’re not”
Chen Yuzhi narrows his eyes at him
“You can’t stop me”
Wang Meng smirks before he all but grabs Chen Yuzhi and hoists him onto his shoulder, carrying him around like he’s a sack of rice
Chen Yuzhi is shocked and appalled and is so stunned that he can’t even fight back as Wang Meng carries him through the fucking streets to the police department
He then promptly carries Chen Yuzhi up the stairs to Jiang Yuelou’s office and promptly all but dumps the poor doctor in Jiang Yuelou’s lap, Chen Yuzhi letting out a yelp of surprise as Jiang Yuelou’s arms come around him to catch him so that he doesn’t fall
They then both look at Wang Meng as he huffs
“Keep an eye on your boyfriend, would ya?  I’m not trying to fucking die today, thanks”
Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou look at each other in confusion as Wang Meng turns and heads out of the office, grabbing Sun Yongren and Song Rong by the arms, dragging them away from Jiang Yuelou’s office
“Hey, hey, paws off!”
“You wanna get between your boss and Dr. Chen right now?”
Song Rong and Sun Yongren are quiet before they both sigh, allowing Wang Meng to continue to drag them away and out of the police station
Little does Jiang Yuelou know that Song Rong and Sun Yongren are the ones keeping Wang Meng informed about the different scenes that Chen Yuzhi might be at or if he’s been kidnapped, etc.
Wang Meng’s kind of like their own little personal CI and it’s great
Wang Meng likes it, like hanging out with Song Rong and Sun Yongren because he’s never really…had any friends?  Like, he’s had superiors and subordinates, but no one he could ever really call a friend
Song Rong and Sun Yongren were a little nervous about becoming friends with Wang Meng but once they realize that he just wants what they want: to make sure that Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou are happy and safe, they bond real fucking quick
Jiang Yuelou is like…a little apprehensive that his subordinates are like all buddy-buddy with Wang Meng but then Wang Meng saves not only his subordinate’s asses, but his ass, he’s like…alright, he can stay
Maybe he makes him an honorary police officer, who knows
But Jing City is now like...hella safe because it’s got Jiang Yuelou and Wang Meng watching out for its citizens (well Wang Meng’s really only watching out for Chen Yuzhi but by watching out for Chen Yuzhi, he’s watching out for the citizens of Jing City because Jiang Yuelou won’t go on a feral rampage is Chen Yuzhi is safe)

guardian episode 8 did so much for us. guo changcheng gets officially hired and gets a cattle prod. “which one of my students is your so called grandfather?” shen wei wallet chain. lao chu and gcc pick up a dead body in the middle of the street and carry it back to the office and no one says a word. shen wei talks to some flowers then has a fight scene in his crisp little suit. zhao yunlan falling asleep on shen wei in the car. shen wei looking around zyl’s apartment like “damn bitch you live like this?” but still tidying up while the tenderest music on the ost plays. the idea of a person in a pillar. genuinely intense introduction to wang zheng’s storyline.  “you are so nice how could i let you walk away?” “anytime you want to eat porridge come knock on my door” truly a banger of an episode.

Guardian rewatch: Episode 1
I am not over how fantastic the Guardian was after finishing it a couple days ago. I will probably re-post some of my thoughts on the show overall here eventually, but for now, I thought I’d compile series of random observations as I go through the series second time around.
This is vastly inspired by canary3d’s wonderful Untamed recaps, but I’m neither as insightful, nor as witty as her, and have zero giffing skills.
Disclaimer as follows: I’m mildly dyslexic, and appreciate polite corrections. I know very very basic Chinese after studying it many many years ago, but I remember little, and rely on subs when watching anything. Generally, new to fandom, not great with tech; please be nice.
There will be spoilers for the series as whole.
So, here goes: Guardian Rewatch, Episode 1
Tumblr media
Watching the opening credits first time since the finale made me cry. That said, I have also watched the series from Viki, but am screen capping them from Youtube - and the opening credits here actually have… well, credits, so a mixed bag of emotions here.
Tumblr media
Pretty sure they blew 40% of their overall budget on the animated opening sequence; and on rewatch it’s actually making more sense. The is fairly good, as well, and I am fairly certain its narrated by Xiao Guo, establishing him as the POV character of sorts.
Tumblr media
Oh those introductions of Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan are hot as hell, both of them confident in their own elements. It’s a great way to quickly summarise not just them individually, but the contrast between them, to the audience.
Tumblr media
The lollipops make their first appearance, before becoming narratively significant in about five different ways. We are also seeing Zhao Yunlan being a sly fox for the first time. He will remain sly fox for the duration of this show.
Tumblr media
We are treated to the first appearance of the ensemble cast, and I’m pretty sure they blew half of their CGI budget on the lovely scene of Xiao Guo being freaked out by the assortment of special abilities of his new team: Da Qing’s seamless cat transformation, Zhu Hong having a tail, Wang Zheng being all ghostly... they never look as great again. Not ever.  In hindsight, this feels like a mean tease: a promise of what this show could have looked like if the production company still had the money.
Tumblr media
I am also pretty sure Bai Yu has a motorbike double, which explains why the motorbike stops featuring after they can no longer afford a motorbike double. Or maybe motorcycle goes away because Zhao Yunlan needs a car to drive Shen Wei around. We’ll never know.
Tumblr media
Shen Wei seeing Kunlun for the first time (and seeing Da Qing for the first time) in a millennia. There is a hint of Baby Shen Wei-ness about him. There is longing and hope and youth. I’m sure he was not allowing himself to have that facial expression since he came out of the magical coma how many decades ago. God damn this is a good performance.
Tumblr media
“Shen Wei? Good name!” And Shen Wei actually flinches a little. And he forgets to let go of the hand after he shakes it. And he looks so unabashedly hopeful, clutching the business hard. On first watch it read as “huh? What’s up with this guy?” On second watch, it’s like a perfect piece of the puzzle, slotting in place. GOD DAMN this is a good performance.
Tumblr media
Here he is again: Baby Shen Wei in all his owlishness. They are talking in the office, and Kunlun has a new name, may or may not remember him, is definitely suspicious of him, but he also listens with the same intensity, and he is alive, and he is here, and Shen Wei is young again, looking so very happy.
Tumblr media
Oh yay Lao Chu’s puppet brother is here! Actually fighting side by side. This will never happen again. Because they will never again have the money.
Tumblr media
We are treated to a short mashup of Shen Wei’s memories as he is thinking “I hope you still remember our pact”. I wonder if there is a specific moment in the future when Shen Wei puts two and two (in this case: a man with a gun and processed sugar on a stick and super powerful artefacts that can do a lot of random magical stuff) together to make a time travel conclusion. Because it doesn’t happen straightaway.
Tumblr media
“I waited for you for ten thousand years”.
Tumblr media
The next day, Li Qian is asking “Is it worth doing anything to protect someone”? And Shen Wei replies that it is. Li Qian is reaching to touch the Hallow around her neck, a heirloom so important to her, chord looking so similar to the one hidden around Shen Wei’s own neck. Shen Wei looks over to Zhao Yunlan who is watching them converse. The... just the symbolism of this, is beautifully crafted as something you cannot possibly notice first time around.
Tumblr media
“Who knows”, says Shen Wei, when he speaks to Zhao Yunlan shortly after, “maybe we have met before.” He watches very very carefully to see if the words resonate. He watches so closely as Zhao Yunlan laughs and then steps away to answer a call. You know the exact moment it dawns on Shen Wei that Kunlun does not, in fact, remember anything, that it’s not a flirty game of cat and mouse. He honestly looks like he is about to cry.
Tumblr media
The first time we ever see Hei Pao Shi, he is not wearing a robe and a mask. First time we see Hei Pao Shi, he is facing off the Shadow Man while wearing a suit, looking stern and resolute (before being swiftly thrown off the roof)
Does he get flung off the roof deliberately so he can make his appearance in all his timeless glory as the world’s most powerful flex? Yes, yes he does.
Tumblr media
I thought this show was good first time around. It’s SUBLIME on rewatch.
Episode 2 will feature a lot of “Shen Wei, you bloody hypocrite”

Wen Kexing, Scorpion King and Gu-Xiang raised together in ghost valley.
This lovely user had produced a VERY interesting Au that I couldn't help myself but make a lil drabble/one shot on it. @naniya27 I hope you like it! I had fun playing around with Xi'er hahahah. (one shot under the cut)
Zhou Zishu didn't know if he should gape in surprise or tilt his head in confusion at the sight of Wen Kexing and a VERY familiar man clad in black conversing by their table. He had only stood up to order himself some more wine and all of the sudden there was an assassin sitting beside Wen Kexing, more so, this assassin wasn't even trying to kill him.
"Where have you been? I've been looking all over for you-" The man whined.
"I told you I will be "around" little brat, didn't A-Xiang inform you of my whereabouts?" Wen Kexing retorted, his carefree smile widened as he tilted his head back to drink his beverage as if this assassin was not in the least bit dangerous.  "Da-ge, you know I would be busy, did you purposely send me away to have your little adventures?" The man pouted, POUTED, as though he was a little brother feigning hurt just to gain favor from his older brother.
'Have I missed something here?' Zhou Zishu internally blanched, approaching their table slowly.
When the man's eyes landed on to him all the traces of playfulness disappeared and a hard mask was set in place. The man straightened in his seat like a proper gentleman with his eyes cold and observant. Zhou Zishu internally shivered, The man looked every bit like he was once did back when he was still serving the prince.
"Ah! A-Xu, come come, you took too long" Wen Kexing whined pettily which gained a slightly shocked but nonetheless passive expression from his companion. "I was gone for 5 minutes Lao Wen-"
"Five minutes too long, a-xu don't deprived me of your beauty" His soulmate winked.
The scandalized look on the scorpion's face ALMOST made Zhou Zishu want to play along with his fan man's antics, but his mind was still too muddled to comprehend just WHY this man was even here.
"Lao Wen, i don't think you need me here if you got a companion?" Zhou Zishu challenged, the man's eyebrows twitched. Either from annoyance or anger he didn't know. "Ah, my bad, A-Xu this is Xie Wang, Xi-er say hello to my beautiful A-Xu" Again, Wen Kexing had that silly sparkling look in his eyes that quiet frankly Zishu decided he would never tire from. "Wen Gongzi, I was not aware you harbored stowaways in your journey" Zishu wanted to snort at that. as if he had not seen the way this "Xi-er" acted while he was not there.
"I know who he is Lao Wen, did not know the Ghost valley is familiar with the Scorpion" Zhou Zishu tilted his head, sitting down across from Wen Kexing. Xi-er looked ready to retort a smartass reply, probably something Wen Kexing had taught himself when the older man beat him to it.
"Ayiah, the ghost valley and Scorpions had always been allies A-Xu, is it not a common knowledge?" he asked.
Zishu only shrugged his shoulder. being an ex-assassin he could always read people based on their body language, and though the man in front of him was of similar occupation, Zishu could not help but chuckle at the way Xi-er's knee slowly moved to touch Wen Kexing's in a protective manner ,or how his jaw flexed slightly indicating that he was grinding his teeth behind his mouth, the piercing eyes never left him for a moment as if anticipating Zishu's attack at anytime. truth be told he looked about ready to drive Zishu away himself.
"Ah that reminds me, I seemed to have forgotten to buy some herbs too take back to the manor, eh A-xu i'll be back in a bit" He smiled warmly before standing up to leave. Zishu knows it's bullshit, Lao Wen would never run off to "buy" something not unless he asked for money first, so Zishu figured that this was his chance to get to know this person, whatever Lao Wen had in mind anyway.
"So...Leader Zhou, we meet again" Xi-'er smiled politely, though the ex assassin knew that that was FAR from a friendly one, more like a challenge. "Yes, after you abducted Chengling" he fired back, smile as taxing. Xie'er ,in a moment of weakness, groaned "Please, don't remind me, i already got an earful from Da'ge about that, I don't want to hear the same from you"
Zishu raised his eyebrow in surprise and confusion, okay so he was not hallucinating then. this scorpion DID call Lao Wen "Da ge"
"Pardon?" said Zishu.
"How was I supposed to know that Zhang boy was your ward and you were with Da ge anyway? he hadn't contacted me ever since he got out of the valley" he pouted...again. "Besides, I already said sorry to him" he reasoned again. Zishu smirked at that "So you said sorry to him and not me or Chengling?"
"Hell no, I don't even know you. and why are you even sticking to Da'ge anyway? this wasn't even in his plan" Xie'er rolled his eyes so far back he was sure it would pop out. The ex- assassin only laughed at that. No, Lao Wen did NOT anticipate their meeting nor did Zishu himself, but he'd be damned if he was the one sticking to Wen Kexing. that fan wielding man was the one who clung to him in the first place.
Just before he could retort Chengling arrived just in time to See Xi-er slightly leaned forward at the table as if he was about to attack Zishu. "Chengling" the swordsman started, but Chengling was fast to run to his side and position himself just behind Zhou Zishu. Xie'er was not pleased. "Little idiot, I thought you went off to buy more supplies for-"
"I was! but Shishu told me to come back here and that he would handle it himself"
'Lao Wen I swear to-'
"Shishu? hah, who are you calling shishu? my Da'ge would never let anyone call him that" Zi'er
"Your Da'ge, definetly did" Zishu almost could not contain his laugh at the scorpion King's scandalized and shocked expression. "This is ridiculous" the scorpion King stood up with al the gracehe could muster in anger "I'm going to find him and set this right" he harrumped, swishing his robes as he disappeared out the tavern.
Chengling, who was still slightly cowering behind him stuttered. "Sh-Shifu, wasn't tha-"
"Yes, don't worry i'll talk to your Shishu about this, come on. Let's go and finish getting those herbs before we go home"
____________________________________________________
"Lao Wen"
"Hmmn?" Wen Kexing hummed, stirring a pot of hot steamed vegetables with chicken soup simmering by the side. "Xie'er was...something" at the mention of his brother Kexing stopped for a second before continuing his minstrations. as if reading Zishu's mind on wanting a clearer explanation, Wen Kexing caved "I found him when I was still in ghost valley. he was one of the children who had been abducted and brought to us" the taller man swallowed hard, clearly struggling, though his face showed little emotion.
"He almost died, luckily I got to him in time and managed to save him, hiding him away was the hardest part. it took a while before he trusted me but once he did I found that I could not turn him away"
Zhou Zishu sighed, with a burst of bravery he walked over to his Zhiji and wrapped his hands around his waist, his head came to rest on Lao Wen's shoulder. "He lived with me for several years,and then Gu-xiang appeared. We barely managed to save her but when Xie'er promised ties with the Scorpion to the former Ghost valley chief he let her go, when I became chief I finally let him go back to his home where he can see his parents again" Wen Kexing stopped, longer this time. His hand shook as he removed the pots from the fire to prevent them from burning, he turned to Zhou Zishu, eyes full of guilt and sorrow.
"But...it was too late, his parents had been killed and with no one to take the title Xi'er had to assume the role and had to band together the scorpions that we know today. He was only 17 that time A-Xu, it took years before he could properly  get a hold of the others and most of the time I wasn't even there to help him. I still had Gu-Xiang to raise and it wasn't time for me to emerge from the valley. He had to come to me multiple times-"
Wen Kexing faltered. Zishu figure that was enough, he didn't think Lao Wen would actually tell him that much. The shorter man steadily turned his soulmate to face him, his eyes soft and understanding as he slowly leaned in, just enough to let Lao Wen back out if he so wanted. but the other man stayed in place. He finally rest his forehead against Lao Wen's. in an instant, his partner loosened up, hand began to encircle around his waist as Zishu moved closer, feeling their noses touch.
"Lao Wen, you did great"
At that high praise and implication, Wen Kexing could not help but to shed tears of relief and gratefulness. Zishu understood, Zishu accepted. and most of all Zhou Zishu stayed.
Bonus: Timeline.
Wen Kexing was around 7 or 8 when he was brought in to Ghost valley. so let's say he was 7.
Xie'er came to ghost valley when he was 8 years old making Wen Kexing 15.
Gu-xiang came to valley when she was 7 making Wen Kexing 18 and Xi'er 11.
Wen Kexing was 20 when he took over, Xie'er now 17 years old and given free reign over the scorpions and Gu xiang 9.
Finally current drama:
Wen Kexing - 28
Xie Wang- 21
Gu-Xiang - 17
(These aren't the real ages btw XD just estmation. i had big brain moment trying to sort out the timeline hahaha)

A brief scene from a slow-moving, self-indulgent WIP, set during the rebuilding of Lotus Pier after Sunshot but before the hunt on Phoenix Mountain. (CQL canon.)
CW for the found bones of a child from the Lotus Pier massacre.
______________
The first time they find a corpse in the lake, it’s caught between the river’s current and some support posts under one of the docks. Warm water, a constant current, and plenty of river creatures have left it little more than a skeleton with the rotting burgundy robes of a junior sect disciple caught in its joints.
Jiang Cheng grits his teeth so hard he feels a muscle pop and shoot pain up through his jaw. The workmen who found the tiny body are huddled together by a railing, faces washed pale, and at his side, Wei Wuxian’s hand tightens around that damn dizi.
“Is there any way to identify who it is?” Jiang Cheng forces himself to ask the healer examining it.
“No, not without facial features, identifiable markings, or notable personal possessions left behind,” Healer Liu responds quietly. “The only thing I can tell is that it was obviously one of the younger disciples. There are marks on the bone here that remind me of the amputations I’ve done when a sword or axe cuts too deeply. I think it’s safe to assume that…that now we know what the Wens did with our people they slaughtered.”
Fury flares like a firework before fading back into the ashes that smolder quietly under Jiang Cheng’s skin nowadays. Wei Wuxian tilts his head close. “Do you want me to see if the spirit is still around, see what it can tell us?” he murmurs. Sunlight glints over the lazy twirl of Chenqing.
“No,” Jiang Cheng whispers back, just as soft, after a moment of thought. “No, we know who murdered them, and they would’ve gone through the soul-calming ceremony when they joined the sect. Let this child rest. There’s nothing useful to be gained by disturbing them anymore.” More loudly, he says, “Healer Liu, I would like the body prepared for rites. Lao-Wang, please have the foreman meet me at the Ancestral Hall. I…” He has to pause to clear his throat. “If the Wen dogs put our people in the lake, I imagine this won’t be the last time we find them. Make sure your men know to anticipate this. Someone should alert the rice and lotus farmers, too, and anyone else who works the waterways. Until we find a more permanent solution, bring any found remains to the pier beside the Ancestral Hall.”
“Yes, Sect Leader,” says one of the workmen.
Sect Leader. It’s not the first time by far that Jiang Cheng has been called that, but now, watching that sad pile of little bones being gathered up, it settles with all the weight and chill of a rain-soaked cloak.

Playing ‘Great Escape’ (Escape room) with Nine Percent (female reader)
Tumblr media
So basically, this is a scenario of what each member would be like when you all play an Escape Room or film ‘Great Escape’ (a show that Justin is actually on) together.
Cai Xukun
Tumblr media
For Kun, I feel that he would be one of the few members that actually try to keep it together and lead everyone. Like he was already a leader of nine percent so I feel that if all 9 of them and you were to do an escape room together, he would try to calm everyone down, maybe even split the group into two teams of five. He would also be one of the few members that would actually comfort you if you started to feel scared or anxious about the situation.
“Don’t worry about anything (Y/N). Just figure out the passcode and I’ll make sure that nothing will scare you”
Chen Linong
Tumblr media
As for Nongnong, I feel that he would be more on the aware side of the situation. Like how he would make sure that everyone is safe, no one would have a heart attack from the jumpscares or even to the point where he wouldn’t mind carrying someone if they had to run. Like who would have thought that this soft boi with the brightest smile would be so stronk and brave (well this is mainly based of how Nongnong can do the 4 finger push up and not be afraid during that ghost prank episode) <3
“(Y/N) watch out!! Are you ok? Are you hurt? Here, I’ll give you a piggyback ride. It’s alright, you’re not heavy at all!! (*insert his uwu smile)”
Fan Chengcheng
Tumblr media
Chengcheng, I would feel that he would try his best to be brave but would have some shocks every now and then. Also probably one of the members that would try to tease everyone else or even be mischievous and would try to scare you but the same time wouldn’t go too far because he knows what it feels to feel scared. Would also be so lost when trying to figure out how to solve one of the password or clues.
“C’mon guys, it’s not that bad...w-what was that?! Did you guys hear that?! Aww, were you scared (Y/N)? No, I won’t scare you anymore, cross my heart”
Justin (Huang Minghao)
Tumblr media
Okay, this might be quite long because!!! Since Justin has already been on the show for 2 seasons now, I feel that he would know his way around no matter what kind of scene/story they throw him into. Spy story where the whole agency was trashed and little source of electricity? Ha!! He doesn’t need electricity. A death case with haunted objects? Please, he knew that they’re all fake and would probably end up playing with the objects. Like he may be the youngest out of all of the members, but do not be fooled as he is damn smart (not to mention very brave!!). Would probably end up bossing some of his geges around because he worries that being in the escape room for too long may cause some anxiety to some of his geges and you. Speaking of you, since you were the only girl of the group, he would probably try his best to reassure you that everything will be alright. Even if you are older than him, he would do nothing but to make sure you were alright. To the point that he would even let you cling on him the whole entire time. Just like Nongnong, I feel that Justin would even go as far as to carry you should anything go wrong (like you guys have to run away from the npc chasing after you).
“Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. What about you? Did the npc hurt you? Did someone bumped you? No no, it’s alright, you can hold onto me. Does your feet hurt? Do you want me to carry you? Look, look, the exit is just over there!!”
Lin Yanjun
Tumblr media
For Yanjun, I feel that he would be more unpredictable, depending on the situation. If he was all alone, he may have the tendency to be startled every now and then, just like Chengcheng. But I feel if he was with the other boys and especially you, his tough *cough*military*cough* side would definitely show. Like, I can imagine he’d get startled if he heard something fell but when he’s with you, he’ll be tough and more protective towards you. Like, he’ll have his arm wrapped around your shoulder or waist; especially when something startled you or you feel extra scared during a specific scene/room. He may even intertwined with your fingers and allow you to cling onto him just like Justin (sorry Zhangjing). Not forgetting to give you a pat on the head or even back, reassuring you that you’ll get through it together. I also feel that his flirty side wouldn’t really come out to play because he knows the situation you all are in and the least thing he would want is to annoy you when you’re scared. Instead, his cold joke side would come out every now and then to lighten up the mood.
“Did any of you just hear what I did? I feel something or someone is following us. Hey, it’s alright (Y/N). C’mere, nothing will touch you as long as I’m around. Guys, can we not stay here until 8 o’clock? I feel that that’s the time when the zombies come out to get us? Get it? Because it’s ATE (eight) o’clock?”
“Jun, shut it. Why did I have get stuck with you and not Justin?”
“ :(  *insert pouting Yanjun*”
Zhu Zhengting
Tumblr media
Alright, Imma apologise first hand because let’s be real, mama Ting gets easily scared by everything (maybe not heights). So, I feel that while he will definitely help with solving the clues/problems that may occur, he definitely would be the type to scream with you. Not just scream but even be the first to run away along with Zhangjing (we’ll get to him soon!!) But I feel he would also be the mother of the group as in if someone was scared or hurt, he would be the first one to worry about them instead of worrying about himself.
“AHHH MAMA I DON’T WANT TO PLAY!! YOU CAN HAVE MY MONEY!! Are you hurt (Y/N)? Did I accidentally hit you when that npc came? Oh no!! You got a bruise!! *proceeds to kiss the bruise* ”
Wang Ziyi
Tumblr media
* note: this is one of the gifs I feel that would fit but I won’t put Ziyi and Xiaogui together don’t worry. They have their own part
Alright, we all know Ziyi is definitely a prince!! NOT TO MENTION HOW SELFLESS HE IS!! Okie!! So, I feel that Ziyi would dare to sacrifice himself *IF IT IS NECESSARY* He would also be the one to carry the group (literally). Zhangjing fell? Time to put him over his shoulder and yeet away. Chengcheng got startled by something that fell? Ziyi would definitely bro hug him, telling him that it was probably the wind. You crying because you were afraid of the dark? He would be there and lend his shoulder for you to cry on. I also feel that whatever physical course they have to go through, he would definitely be the one to do it. Like if they need to grab something from the dark room at then of the hallway? He’ll grab it on his own. Need to go through the air vent to open up a door? He’s on it!! Need to cross from one side to another only with 2 ropes (1 for walking the other one to hold) to pull down the lever for the bridge? He’ll be done in less than 5 minutes.
“Don’t worry everyone. There’s nothing to be afraid of!! This is all so fake. Eh (Y/N), you ok there? Did the npc scare you? Do you want me to scold them? Has everyone drink?”
Xiao Gui (Wang Linkai)
Tumblr media
Alright, for Xiaogui, I feel that he wouldn’t be that scared especially when he’s with a large group (NINE PERCENT NINE PERCENT!!). Not to mention that he’s a ghost himself (get it? gui is ghost in chinese, Imma shut up now). Instead, I feel he would be slightly mischievous like Chengcheng. He wouldn’t really know how to figure out the codes but he would be there to scare the pig out of Zhengting. Or even annoy some of his geges, *cough*yanjun*cough*. However, I do feel that he would be the one to hype the group up. Like he’ll start shouting NINE PERCENT NINE PERCENT or even ‘CAUSE WE ARE RULE BREA-KKKK-EEE-RR’ so that everyone wouldn’t be that scared. If he’s with you, I feel he won’t scare you but he’ll be curious to what you were doing that he accidentally scared you. Like let’s say you’re going through some codes on a desk and was so into solving it that Xiaogui suddenly came up behind you, startling you. BUT HE WOULD DEFINITELY APOLOGISE IF HE DID.
“Aiyo wassup. WE ARE NINE PERCENT!!! YOU WON’T SCARE US!! COME AT US BRO!!”
“EYO (Y/N), what are we solving right now?”
“WO DE LAO TIAN, WO MIAN BAO MEI LE (cue Yanjun looking over). XIAO GUI!! Can you not suddenly show up with no sound whatsoever!!”
“Sorry :(( I have some candies, hope it’ll make you feel better”
You Zhangjing
Tumblr media
OKIE OKIE, HEAR ME OUT!! I can so imagine Zhangjing getting scared and snatching one of the npc’s wig like this GIF XD Alright, serious talk, I feel Zhangjing would be as scared as Zhengting; especially when you guys are all in a wide space/area and not so enclosed because I feel that the more enclosed the space is, the less jumpscares would occur. Would definitely be the first to run away from something along with Zhengting or would probably hide behind Yanjung/Nongnong. But would end up accidentally bumping to a wall or maybe of the members or even you and maybe even falling down. Would be the third person to be carried around when they’re running (after you and Zhengting). Would threaten the staff (like he’d face to the cameras) to cut out any embarrassing pictures/videos of him. Would also threaten the members if they scared him (looking at you Cheng and Xiaogui). I can imagine that he, you and Zhengting would be cornered and hugging together whilst the other nine percent be protecting you guys. Would definitely start singing to make himself (and possibly the others) better. Like I can imagine Xiaogui chanting Nine Percent and started to rap then Zhangjing followed by singing.
“None of you better scare me!! I may be smol but I will hurt you if you do. Not you (Y/N). I know that you won’t ever do that!!”
“AGHHHH!!! PLEASE DON’T HURT ME!! I’M JUST A BOY!!”
“Can you not scare us? We, we can sing for you!! FOR FREE EVEN!! What do you want? HEY YOU HEY YOU DON’T PICK ME!! EI EI!! LET THE MUSIC GO ROUND ROUND ROUND ROUND ROUND!! I NEED A DOCTOR!!!”

The Rescue Job
If anyone had asked Zhao Yunlan this morning how he thought this day would go, kissing Shen Wei would not have even been suggested. He would have thought about it, of course, since kissing Shen Wei was something that he thought about frequently; he’d even kissed the man before, but those were quick, light kisses as part of a job, done just to keep up their cover of being boyfriends, or husbands, or whatever that particular job had them pretending to be. Those kisses were almost worse than no kisses at all, precisely because they weren’t actually real, not in the way that truly mattered – although they were real enough to make him hold on to the memory of every single one like a dragon holding onto its hoard, each scent and warm breath like a gold coin, each brush of soft lips a sparkling jewel.
But to be actually kissing Shen Wei, to have arms wrapped around him and a hand in his hair, bodies pressed so close together that it was hard to tell whose pounding heartbeat was whose, hot mouths exploring each other until they were forced to stop in order to breathe again? This was something Zhao Yunlan had only dreamed about.
He was fairly sure that it wasn’t another dream, however, as these dreams were usually set in his office, or in one of their apartments, or in the park that they sometimes took a walk in, not in a bare concrete room so far below ground that there was no natural light. These dreams didn’t involve Shen Wei covered in his own blood. And they certainly didn’t feature Ye Zun in the background, making gagging noises and ‘get a room’ gestures.
No, this morning Zhao Yunlan had expected the team to go in, do the job they’d been planning for the past week, and get out. The day had begun with them going to do exactly that, and it had been going according to plan up until everything went to hell.
***
Nine Hours Earlier
It was a beautiful, sunny day, just on the cusp of spring and summer – the sort of day that made its way into a myriad of books, or the screens of every rom-com or teen movie when the script called for the protagonists to have a perfect day. Fluffy white clouds drifted across blue sky, not even a single drop of rain threatened, and a light breeze kept the temperature just this side of overly warm. Their mark couldn’t have picked a better day for his garden reception if he’d been able to engineer the weather himself.
Not that Zhao Yunlan was able to properly enjoy it, of course, since he wasn’t at the reception. He wasn’t even outside, enjoying the pleasant afternoon in any way. Instead, he was back at the team’s HQ, sprawled back in his chair with his feet up on his desk, one ankle crossed over the other, tongue working the lollipop in his mouth as he watched six screens showing the feeds of six pinhole cameras, and vicariously experienced both the day and the reception through them. If his eyes happened to linger more on five of these screens whenever a particular blue suited figure appeared on one of them, who was to tell?
“Do you think you could pay attention to more than my gege?”
Well. One man could tell. Zhao Yunlan’s current third-least favourite person in the world lounged in a nearby chair, twirling an ornamental cane in one hand. Zhao Yunlan offered him an easy grin around the lollipop.
“Aiyo, Ye Zun, of course I’m paying attention to all of it. Who do you take me for?” Even as he spoke, a flicker of blue drew his eyes back to the screen showing the feed from Guo Changcheng’s camera, Shen Wei walking past the grifter with neither of them even giving a flicker that they knew each other. Zhao Yunlan couldn’t help but feel a flicker of pride for how far the kid had come, along with a flicker of something that was decidedly more heated than pride at the figure Shen Wei cut in that blue suit, the clothing somehow managing to make him seem both perfectly innocuous with his sensible business shoes and round-rimmed glasses, and also just so undeniably…
“Disgusting.” Ye Zun’s voice drawled across his reverie. “Any minute now you’ll start drooling, and I really don’t want to see that.”
Zhao Yunlan didn’t even have to look up to pull a lollipop from his desk drawer and throw it in the vicinity of Ye Zun’s head. This was an interaction that had repeated far too many times for his taste. While yes, it had been his insistence that Ye Zun was never to be left unattended in the HQ even if he was, technically and officially, now part of the team, he hadn’t anticipated that he would be the one most often on Ye Zun duty, which invariably meant Ye Zun mocking him mercilessly for his hopeless crush on Shen Wei. Zhao Yunlan felt both relieved and regretful that none of their recent jobs had involved Shen Wei and him going undercover together as a couple – while those jobs always left him on even more of an emotional high than successful jobs normally did, buoyed by additional memories of touches and kisses to hoard and wish for something he couldn’t have, they also led Ye Zun to kick the mocking up several notches.
He wasn’t surprised to hear Ye Zun catch the lollipop, rather than the far more satisfying sound of it lightly thunking against his head, or the follow up sigh and the sound of a crinkling wrapper being undone.
“Gege could do so much better than you.”
“Tell me something I don’t know.” Zhao Yunlan scowled, then pulled the half-eaten lollipop from his mouth and waved it at the screens. “Looks like the party’s winding down. It’s supposed to finish at 2:30, right?”
He knew damn well that that was when it was supposed to finish. He and the twins had pored over every scrap of information while crafting this plan, and at this point they probably had the reception schedule more thoroughly memorised than the host. It did, however, successfully switch Ye Zun’s focus to the screens, and allow him to take his own attention away from just how much better than him Shen Wei could do, and all of the other reasons why a gremlin like him and the perfect man that was Shen Wei would never be anything more than just good friends and colleagues. No matter how much more he wanted.
He leaned forward and pressed a key on the keyboard. “Lin Jing, have you found it yet?” Lin Jing’s screen showed wood panelling, the hacker’s hands running along it.
“It’s got to be here somewhere,” Lin Jing replied. “From the map, it should be…”
“Here?” Da Qing suggested. The wood panelling on Da Qing’s feed opened, revealing an electrical panel.
“Yes!” Lin Jing cheered quietly, then quickly began to get to work.
“You’ve got 22 minutes before the reception ends and security starts looking for stray guests trying to overstay their welcome,” Ye Zun warned them.
“Xiao Guo,” Zhao Yunlan adds, “ready to cause a distraction if they need more time?”
Back outside with the main party, Guo Changcheng makes a noise of agreement that the woman he’s talking to takes as agreeing with whatever she was talking about. Zhao Yunlan glances at the other three camera feeds – Chu Shuzhi’s shows him hovering in Guo Changcheng’s general vicinity, while Shen Wei and Zhu Hong are closer to the mansion’s entrance, ready to slip in to help Lin Jing and Da Qing if needed. All where they should be.
“Zhao Yunlan,” Shen Wei says suddenly, his soft voice as clear through the comms as ever. “There’s something wrong.”
“What do you mean?”
“Too many guests have left.”
Zhao Yunlan and Ye Zun both sit up straight and lean towards the screens, studying them.
“Gege, there’s still a lot of guests there,” Ye Zun says, eyes flitting from screen to screen. Shen Wei’s camera feed slowly turns as Shen Wei does, allowing them a view of more people.
“They’re wrong for guests,” he says. “I think…”
Whatever it was he thought they didn’t hear, as his and Zhu Hong’s comms and cameras went dead. A moment later, Chu Shuzhi’s and Guo Changcheng’s followed suit.
“Shen Wei!”
Zhao Yunlan had barely finished the name when the last two comms and cameras went out. He pulled out his phone, jabbing at Chu Shuzhi’s number, only for it to go straight to voicemail. He tried the next number, aware of Ye Zun doing the same thing beside him. All of the phones went to voicemail.
“Wang Zheng!” Zhao Yunlan shouted, pushing away from his desk. Within moments, the ghostly pale young woman appeared at the door. “Keep trying to call the team through every avenue you can, and tell Lao Li to make sure my car’s ready for an extraction.”
He hoped it wouldn’t come to that, and he was confident in Shen Wei and Chu Shuzhi’s abilities to get everyone out regardless of what had just happened, but still…the way the cameras and comms had all cut out like that left him feeling uneasy, particularly since Shen Wei had thought there was something wrong.
“And call Cheng Xinyan,” Ye Zun added from where he’d taken over the keyboard, his fingers flying over it. He bit his lip in a way that was just so Shen Wei that Zhao Yunlan was left speechless for a moment. For all that they were identical, the twins generally had such different mannerisms that it wasn’t at all difficult to tell them apart, especially not once Ye Zun grew his hair out to collar-length while Shen Wei kept his short. Every so often, though, one of them would do something that reinforced the fact that the similarities between them weren’t limited to just looks.
“What’s wrong?” Zhao Yunlan asked him. If Ye Zun was suggesting that they bring in a doctor, then he, like Zhao Yunlan, had a very bad feeling about this.
“I can’t activate any of their trackers,” Ye Zun said, not looking up from the screens. “To be more accurate, I sent the activation codes, and nothing happened.”
Zhao Yunlan frowned at that, shoving the lollipop back in his mouth and going back to trying to get through to any of the team’s phones while Ye Zun tried to bring the comms back online.
One minute passed. Then five. Then ten. To Zhao Yunlan, each one might as well have been an hour.
Thirty eight minutes after Shen Wei’s comms went down, two cars screeched to a halt outside, and car doors slammed. Zhao Yunlan was halfway to the door when it opened, and Chu Shuzhi staggered inside, his arms slung over Guo Changcheng and Zhu Hong’s shoulders as they half-carried him. Red blood smeared Guo Changcheng’s shirt where Chu Shuzhi leaned against him, and streaked across Zhu Hong’s face where she’d evidently rubbed a bloodstained hand. Behind them, Da Qing supported a deathly pale Lin Jing.
Zhao Yunlan stopped and looked them over, icy fingers creeping up his back. Something had certainly gone horribly, terribly wrong. Wang Zheng and Sang Zan raced forward to help get Chu Shuzhi and Lin Jing to the back room that Cheng Xinyan used as her infirmary whenever they needed to call her in, and Zhao Yunlan was dimly aware of Ye Zun joining them as he looked behind the group. Out the door, the two cars were haphazardly parked on the lawn, silent – and empty.
Zhao Yunlan looked at his returned team again, five where there should be six. When he spoke, his voice seemed so distant to his ears that he almost didn’t recognise it.
“Where’s Shen Wei?”

Weilan Collection 2
Summary: After Ye Zun’s death, the SID reopens its door with the original team back in place. With one big absence.
Zhu Hong hadn’t expected to be back in the office. But she and Fourth Uncle both agreed that she was in no way ready to be the High Chief of the Yashou fulltime. Instead, she had to go through weekly meetings and lessons with Uncle, Wu Qing and Ying Chun, learning their histories and cultures. After a few years, when she had matured, then she would take charge.
For now though, she was back working at SID. They were still her team, her family, even if there were a lot more workers. And even if something was missing. They’d lost a friend, more than one. Looking into Zhao Yunlan’s office she isn’t surprised to see him sitting in his chair, eyes fixed on the amber pendent resting on his desk.
“He’s been staring at it for an hour.”
Da Qing leapt onto her desk, butting her hand for scratches.
“Lao Li has left him food, but he’s ignoring it. It’s been a year Da Qing. I’m worried.”
A year since Ye Zun’s final attack. A year since Shen Wei’s death.
“Not even Lin Jing is this bad, and he lost Sha Ya.”
Da Qing growled, swiping a claw at his friend.
“You know you can’t compare those two. Lin Jing lost a prospective girlfriend. Yunlan, he lost his..his-“
“Soulmate.”
Their conversation stopped when Wang Zheng put down the phone shouting about a new case. The chief stepped out of his office, all signs of mourning gone.
“You heard her, let’s go!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Same energy as last time Chief. Off the charts.”
Zhao Yunlan sighed, looking away from Da Qing. This again. For the past three months, in every crime involving a Dixingren, they had found a dark energy. According to Lin Jing, it was identical to Shen Wei’s, which pissed Zhao Yunlan off. Was someone out there copying the Black Robe Envoy? Trying to destroy his reputation again? The man was dead. Would it kill people to finally leave him alone?
“And? Can it be tracked?”
“Unless Lin Jing has invented something in the two hours we’ve been gone.”
Zhao Yunlan sighed, massaging his temples. His headaches had gotten worse recently. He wasn’t sleeping, dreams of the palace and screams keeping him awake at night.
“Nothing else?”
“Afraid not Chief.”
“Ok, let’s go back to the SID. Maybe Lin Jing does have something.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I have nothing. Sorry Chief, but the Enovy’s power was always too strong and shorted out my instruments. This one is the same, I can’t track it.”
Lin Jing smiled sadly, knowing that nothing would comfort Zhao Yunlan.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s not your fault. Thank you. For trying.”
Since Shen Wei’s death, Zhao Yunlan rarely reacted to anything. He hadn’t threatened Lin Jing’s bonuses even once. It was odd. They wanted their old friend back. But they also knew better. Watching his friend pace in front of him, fingers tangled in his hair, Lin Jing opened his mouth, wanting to console him. Before he could, Wang Zheng raced into the lab.
“Chief, Minister Gao’s office is being attacked. Li Qiang says the reading from the Dixingren matches the energy found at the last few scenes.”
“Shit. Ok, all hands on deck. We leave now.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The team spilled out of the cars, Da Qing and Zhao Yunlan leading them through the ministry building.
“Lin Jing, anything?”
“Outside the doors to Minister Gao’s office. Whoever is attacking him is there.”
Changcheng whimpered, concerned for his uncle. Chu Shuzhi wrapped an arm around the younger man’s shoulders, trying to comfort him. Growling, Zhao Yunlan burst through the doors, unholstering his gun, firing off a warning shot. His team scattered throughout the room, taking offensive positions.
“You! Stop right there! SID!”
The man (dressed in black trousers and a black hoodie. Zhao Yunlan glared. Another attempt to tarnish his Shen Wei’s reputation.) turned slowly. He tilted his head, staring at the chief of the SID. At least, that’s what Zhao Yunlan assumed. Black shadows covered his face. Cocking his gun, Zhao Yunlan was determined not to let him escape.
“Hands up and come with us peacefully. This doesn’t have to end with a fight.”
But of course, the man attacked. Damn, he was fast. In the blink of an eye he had taken out Lao Chu and Zhu Hong, the best fighters out of the group. He went for Da Qing, Zhao Yunlan firing before he could reach the cat Yashou. With a cry, the man stumbled away from Da Qing, slumping against the wall. Zhao Yunlan stormed over to his friend, punching his arm.
“What the hell is wrong with you?! You’re being attacked, you don’t freeze in place, you fight back! You defend yourself! Xiao Gao could do better!”
“I’m sorry, but-“
“But what?”
“Chief.”
Still angry, the Guardian turned his glare on the team’s youngest member. Xiao Gao stared at the attacker, face pale, tears in his eyes.
“Chief, it’s Shen Wei.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The original SID team stood in Lin Jing’s lab, staring at the man on the bed. Their scientist ran from machine to machine, running all kind of tests. The chief saw on the edge stood at the foot of the bed, eyes never leaving Shen Wei’s face.
“Finally, tests are finished.”
“And?”
“It’s him, it’s Shen Wei.”
“Shit!”
Zhao Yunlan started pacing, anger in every step. Zhu Hong stood in his path, stopping him. Placing her hands on his shoulders, she looked into his eyes, seeing the anger and pain there.
“Why is this a bad thing? Shen Wei is back. That’s good right?”
“He attacked Minister Gao. He’s been attacking people for months. He’s a criminal who’ll be sent back to Dixing as soon as he wakes up.”
“No, he won’t.”
As one, the team turned towards the door of the lab.
“An Bai?”
The King of Dixing settled into the couch, accepting the tea from Wang Zheng.
“Thank you.”
He leaned back, looking over his audience, Wang Zheng clutched onto Sang Zan’s arm, Jin Ling and Chu Shuzi stood on either side of a seated Zhao Yunlan, Da Qing sat on the table, close to his friend, while Zhu Hong and Guo Changcheng stood at either end of the table. Guo Changcheng had his diary out ready to take notes. An Bai sipped his tea, still not sure what to say.
“Forgive me Guardian, but I’m still not sure how you survived? I was told you had died.”
Zhao Yunlan sighed, knowing he needed to explain his own survival before learning about Shen Wei’s.
“There was a Dixingren, Zhang Zhi. He survived by sharing bodies with people. Turns out he’d been in my father’s body for about twenty years. He knew how the Guardian Lantern worked and volunteered to move into my body and sacrifice himself. I came back here and kept working with SID. Now, you tell me why Shen Wei attacked us.”
The younger man placed the cup on the table, running his fingers through his hair.
“There are certain people in Dixing who still support Ye Zun. One of them is a healer. This is going to be hard to believe.”
“Try us.”
“A part of Shen Wei’s soul was trapped in the Mountain Awl. This group managed to pull it out. Using the serum that insane Haixing scientist created, they upper her power to insane levels. She recreated Shen Wei’s body. He came back weakened, without his full powers, so he couldn’t escape.”
Da Qing interrupted the man, curious about something.
“How do you know all this?”
An Bai glared at the table, fists clenched.
“They’re not the only people who can break someone with torture.”
“When you say break?”
Hearing the hitch in Zhao Yunlan’s voice, the king looked up, eyes full of sympathy.
“They broke his mind. Shen Wei has no idea who he is, who you are or who the Black Robe Envoy is. As far as he’s concerned, he lives to serve this splinter group. All of whom have been arrested. Unfortunately, by the time we got to them, they’d already sent him to attack the minister.”
“Ok, so what’s the plan? Can he be helped?”
“Yes, there are plenty of Dixingren who can heal his mind and body. It won’t be easy, but, I think he’s strong enough.”
Zhao Yunlan slammed a hand on the table.
“He is plenty strong enough. We didn’t get where we are by doubting Shen Wei. Tell us what to do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It wasn’t easy. For anyone. There were days where Shen Wei was catatonic, sitting on the couch in the SID offices, Zhao Yunlan beside him holding his hand. Other days he flew into random rages, destroying everything around him until Lao Chu had to restrain him. Those days ended with Shen Wei crying into Zhao Yunlan’s shoulder, apologising for everything.
His memory came back in dribs and drabs. His first memory, perhaps not surprisingly, was of Kunlun. There was a lot of confusion those first few weeks. When he remembered Ye Zun, Zhao Yunlan had to take a week off work. They spent that time curled together on Zhao Yunlan’s bed, Shen Wei crying and blaming himself. As his memories returned, so did his powers.
The best moment came when he remembered everything about Zhao Yunlan. Not wanting to wait anymore, he teleported into the other’s office, pulling the taller man into a kiss. They broke apart, gasping for air. Zhao Yunlan came to his senses first.
“What just happened?”
“I’ve waited ten thousand years. I’ve been tortured, I’ve died, I’ve had my brain broken and remade and throughout everything, there was always you. Just here, lingering in the back of my head. You saved me Zhao Yunlan. I love you.”
Laughing, Zhao Yunlan hugged the man, spinning them in a circle, aware that the test had come to ogle them.
“And I’ll always be there baby. I promise. You and me, through all the ages.”
A promise that Zhao Yunlan was only to happy to keep.
