লিখি লোৱা, মই এজন মিঞা ("Write Down 'I am a Miyah'", 2016) by Hafiz Ahmed, translated from Assamese to English by Shalim M. Hussain, began a movement of resistance poetry among Assamese Muslims of Bengali descent, referred to as Miya Poetry after a slur used to describe this community. From Abdul Kalam Azad, for Indian Express ("Write...I am a Miya", 2019):
This poem went viral and other young poets started responding to him through poems. The young poets also started reclaiming “Miya”, a slur used against us, as our identity with pride. This chain of Facebook posts continued for days, reiterating the violence, suffering and humiliation expressed by our community. As time passed, more poets wrote in various languages and dialects, including many Miya dialects. The nomenclature ‘Miya Poetry’ got generated organically but the poets and their associates have been inspired by the Negritude and Black Arts movements, and queer, feminist and Dalit literary movements, where the oppressed have reclaimed the identity which was used to dehumanise them. The trend transcended our community. Poets from the mainstream Assamese community also wrote several poems in solidarity with the Miya poets while some regretted not being poets. Gradually, this became a full-fledged poetry movement and got recognised by other poets, critics and commentators. The quality and soul of these poems are so universal that they started finding prominence on reputed platforms. For the first time in the history of our community, we had started telling our own stories and reclaiming the Miya identity to fight against our harassers who were dehumanising us with the same word. They accused us of portraying the whole Assamese society as xenophobic. The fact is we have just analysed our conditions. Forget generalising the Assamese society as ‘xenophobic’, no Miya poet has ever used the term ‘xenophobic’ nor any of its variants. The guilt complex of our accusers is so profound that they don’t have the patience to examine why we wrote the poems.
Amrita Singh, writing for The Caravan ("Assam Against Itself", 2019), detailed the political backlash against Miya Poetry, in particular the above poem.
On 10 July this year, Pranabjit Doloi, an Assam-based journalist, filed a complaint at Guwahati’s Panbazar police station accusing ten people of indulging in criminal activities “to defame the Assamese people as Xenophobic in the world.” Doloi claimed that the ten people were trying to hinder the ongoing updation of the National Register of Citizens, a list of Assam’s Indian citizens that is due to be published on 31 August. The premise of Doloi’s complaint was a widely-circulated poem called, “Write down I am Miya,” by Hafiz Ahmed, a school teacher and social activist. “Write. Write down I am a Miya/ A citizen of democratic secular republic without any rights,” Ahmed wrote. The police registered a first information report against Doloi’s complaint, booking all ten persons for promoting enmity between groups, among other offences. [...] At the press conference, Mander emphasised that people in Assam are in distress because of the NRC’s arbitrary and rigid procedures. “One spelling mistake when you are writing a Bengali name in English … that is enough for you to be in a detention center, declared a foreigner,” Mander said. “If you are not allowing this lament to come out in the form of poetry, then where is this republic of India going?”
Ahmed's poem is influenced in structure by "Identity Card", a 1964 poem by by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish which uses the symbolic figure of the Palestinian working man to confront Israeli occupiers. Darwish's identity card, a symbol of Israeli subjugation transformed into a cry of Palestinian national identity, is reshaped by Ahmed into the National Register of Citizens for Assam and the accompanying fear of statelessness and disenfranchisement for the Miya people.
This solidarity between writers from oppressed groups is, of course, not one that ends with Darwish and Ahmed, nor with the Black, queer, feminist, and Dalit influences of Miya Poetry. As long as there is oppression, there will be companionship and recognition reflected in art and activism. On December 13, 2023, Black Agenda Report reprinted Refaat Alareer's "If I Must Die", acknowledging the connection between Alareer's poem and "If We Must Die" by Claude McKay, written in 1919 in response to the Red Summer white supremacist riots. In 2000, Haitian community activist Dahoud Andre translated "If We Must Die" into Kreyòl, and the Black Agenda Report editorial honors Alareer in a similar way, reprinting "If I Must Die" with an accompanying Kreyòl translation. You've made your perspective clear. Deflection and whataboutism are your weapons.
You are so quick to play your dalit card everywhere, but you forget that dalits were among the persecuted Hindus too. I never denied that the caste system is evil and needs to be gone completely. Why bring it up in a conversation where it wasn't even an issue?
You're so far into your leftie liberal mode that you don't even realise that you're here because of the efforts of fellow Hindus' efforts to abolish the caste system and bring in reservations to compensate for the oppression. It's still a work in progress but there's definitely progress.
Moreover, had this nation been running on the same values as Islamic rulers of the past who broke our temples, you'd be killed just for being a queer or being a Hindu who didn't convert.
Just look at the minorities in other Islamic countries.

This was posted by me to a watch forum in March 2022. As with many of the posts that I made there, I have begun adding them to this Tumblr as a record of that time for me and of my wristwatch-related meanderings.
When a story is about something else, but a watch plays a very important role
In a very recent article in Wired, “Trapped in Silicon Valley’s Hidden Caste System,” an HMT (Hindustan Machine Tools) watch – a photo from the story is above – is described right out the gate and is referred to throughout. Here is the opening:
“SIDDHANT WAS 14 when he learned of the watch. His father, a low-wage worker on the Indian railway, was trying to save up for it, tucking away a few rupees when he could. Made of steel, the watch had in its dial a sketch of a portly man, his face framed by round glasses and his broad shoulders clad in a wide-lapelled jacket. It was his father’s hero, Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the man most responsible for weakening the caste system’s grip on Indian society. After school, Siddhant liked to ride his bike down the crowded streets of Nagpur, India, past groups of kids playing cricket, to a squat concrete building where his father rented a modest office with his friends, all anti-caste activists. Inside, he’d find the men sitting in plastic chairs, swapping tales of their exploits with Ambedkar, surrounded by posters of the man and newspapers spilling off bookshelves. As he sat listening, Siddhant couldn’t help but notice as one friend and then another and a third appeared at the office with the watch strapped to their wrists. One day, Siddhant showed up on his bike and, to his immense surprise, saw on his father a different version of the watch. A gift from a big-shot friend, this one was comparatively luxe. Instead of the metal strap it had a leather band, and it was quartz, battery-powered rather than a windup. Siddhant couldn’t help but blurt out: “I want that watch!” Siddhant, like his father, is a Dalit, a member of the most oppressed caste in South Asia’s birth-based hierarchy. Even among Dalits, their family was especially poor. Siddhant sometimes spent his evenings crouched near the firepit where his family cooked their food, repairing his torn rubber sandals with a hot iron rod that melted the straps back onto the sole. Seeing his father’s watch, something clicked: This was a symbol of everything he was after—to be an elite, educated Dalit, just like Ambedkar. Siddhant’s father made him a deal. If Siddhant finished high school with first honors, he could have the watch. A year later, Siddhant came home brandishing his report card from the Maharashtra board of education: He’d done it. While his father, beaming, scanned the results, Siddhant grabbed the watch off a shelf and adjusted the strap to his wrist. Siddhant has worn the watch nearly every day since—while riding his bike 12 miles to college, while earning his first paycheck as an engineer, while getting married. When he flew across the Atlantic to start a tech career in the San Francisco Bay Area, he wore it. It was on his wrist when he interviewed for, and landed, the job that convinced him he might finally escape the orbital pull of India and his family’s multigenerational poverty: as a software engineer at Facebook, with an offer package that totaled almost $450,000.

India is a country with many different cultures. Even with so many individuals from various cultures residing together, each culture has its own range of limits. Inter-caste marriages are still one of India's most serious concerns. In Indian families, marrying someone from a different caste causes uproar.
It is simply not acceptable. Witnessing such trivialities when India has made such strides in technology and other sectors is disheartening. Even now, it is not uncommon for people to learn about honour killings in India. Though this is most visible in rural regions, individuals living in cities are not far behind. Although city inhabitants do not engage in honour killings, some parts of the community still do not allow SC/ST inter-caste marriages. 
Those who oppose SC/ST inter-caste weddings frequently say that two different religions and civilizations cannot coexist in the same home. We, on the other hand, strongly disagree. Co-existence is never an issue when two people in love are compatible.

Eligibility for SC/ST Inter Caste Marriages
Several requirements must be met by the couple in order for them to benefit from the 'Inter-caste Marriage Program 2018'. These are as follows:
That must be the couple's first marriage.
The Married Pair Should Include Any Dalit Community Members.
The Hindu Marriage Act requires that the marriage be registered.
The Documents Needed Under the Scheme to Be Presented To The Relevant Authorities.
A married couple's annual income must not exceed 5 lakhs when both are together.
Documents Required for SC/ST Inter Caste Marriages
The documents are as follows-
The Ration Card
The Original Salary Certificates of the Couples Must Be Provided
Inter-Caste Marriage Enrolment Endorsement (Marriage Authentication), Which Is A Certificate Granted By The Sub-Office, Registrar's Panchayat President, Or A Declaration Given By NSS or SND, Might Also Be Filed.
Both spouses' castes are endorsed.

Eyeing Assembly elections in the crucial States of Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh (UP) in the next few months, the Congress on Sunday played a “surprise” Dalit card by naming Charanjit Singh Channi as the next Punjab Chief Minister.
Channi, the outgoing Technical Education Minister, is also one of those leaders who had rebelled against the party’s old warhorse Captain Amarinder Singh.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi congratulated Channi after he was picked as the next Punjab Chief Minister, and said the party must continue to fulfil the promises made to the people of the State. Rahul said “history had been created by the party after choosing a Dalit face” to head the Congress Government in Punjab.
The entire Congress leadership including party chief Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and his sister Priyanka Gandhi besides seniors like Harish Rawat, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, Pawan Bansal, Ajay Maken and Randeep Surjewala, were involved in setting the Punjab unit in order.
Channi, 58, a three-time MLA from Rupnagar’s Chamkaur Sahib will be sworn in as Punjab’s first Dalit Chief Minister on Monday. His elevation is significant given the fact that Dalits form around 31 per cent of Punjab’s population. The Dalit population is in the same range in neighbouring States of UP and Uttarakhand.

Blindfolded and sworn to silence, I was captured by Saddam’s men
Fifty-five years ago, the Iraqi regime began a reign of terror against the Jewish community after the catastrophic defeat of Arab states in the Six Day War. The 3,000 Jews still living in Iraq were sacked from their jobs, barred from university, had their phones cut off and were forbidden to leave the country. The worst day was 27 January 1969, when nine Jews were among 14 people hanged in the public square. Dozens more Jews men were arrested and never seen again. Saeed Herdoon spent six months as a captive of Saddam’s henchmen, but was lucky enough to get out alive.  We are grateful to his daughter Dalit for drawing  attention to his story, as posted by JIMENA. Herdoon died in 2007.

Passover, 1969; it was a usual day in the office, centrally located in the business district in Baghdad. I was working as an importer/exporter of fabrics as I do now with my brother-in-law and several other men. Suddenly, without warning, three of Saddam Hussein’s men (who would later become his personal republic guards in the Ba’ath party) entered the office, and shut the main doors. The elder of the three, apparently the leader, told the two younger men to collect the identification cards of everyone in the office. As he began the shuffle through the cards, he began to separate the cards into two groups. We all understood that he was apparently separating the Jews from the non-Jews. The two younger men redistributed the non-Jewish ID cards to their rightful owners and escorted them outside the office.
We were five men left in the office, all Jewish men. The leader of the three-armed men informed us that we would be taken in for questioning. In the meantime, the office was being searched for anything ‘incriminating’- files and even our typewriters were confiscated from us. The two partners of our office were separated from the rest of us and taken outside the building- we soon follow them while, at the same time, we were forced to carry all the confiscated items from the building ourselves. The three-armed men and us walked down the street where two cars were waiting. Three went in one car and two in the other. Immediately after we sat in the car, the officer told us, in a particularly polite manner, that our eyes were to be blindfolded. With an old, dirty piece of cloth, our eyes were covered- little did we know at that moment that they would remained covered for the next two weeks.
The driver sped up and as the car filled with dust, we understood that the car had driven off of the main roads. Meanwhile, our own cars remained in our office building parking lot and our families were left to wonder why none of us returned for dinner that night. After an hour or so, the cars stopped and we were forced outside. They took us into a building and guided us up the stairs. No one dared to speak, and we were not given any information about where we were, or how long we would remain in the guard’s custody. We entered a room which we could sense was filled with several other men in our position, and we were each seated on the floor. I felt the presence of men on either side of me, and then I heard a man cough. I realized that this man was the late Salah Haddad; I knew that he and his 18-year-old son had been taken ten days earlier. I whispered his name, but he did not respond. After two or three attempts to find out whether or not it was really him, he finally whispered back in an urgent manner, “Don’t talk!”
After a while, a man entered the room and informed us that we were not allowed to move around or talk until they (whoever ‘they’ were) had a chance to review our individual cases. After seven or eight hours of sitting still and awaiting more information some men, including myself, were moved into another room where we slept on the concrete floor- still blindfolded and still wearing my suit. During the night, we were given some bread and tea, and early in the morning, men were taken in groups of two to the bathroom (while still in blindfolds, and of course in the company of a guard).
I later came to understand that the reason we had to remain silent at all times and that we were only allowed to use the bathrooms early in the morning is that the building we were in was a working police station. Saddam’s ‘men’ had taken control of the second floor of the station house and, as such, they had to wait till the building was quite early in the morning to allow us to move around. All of us, fifteen men in total, remained in this routine of sleeping on the floors, not talking, and not seeing past the darkness of our blindfolds for the entirety of two weeks.

We are gradually running out of these safe spaces unfortunately but I'm so glad this blog is still here
Honestly, I wonder how some people read the epics and walk away from it thinking "Oh war, fighting and hatred is good actually and we should do more of it".
Today is a very interesting day. I'm getting called ignorant today. I'm doing good work. I'm denying history somehow. We're creating a safe space. I'm playing the dalit card, apparently. A bunch of people are sending their love and appreciation.
The dichotomy is so good. Thank you for all the love to balance out the hate.

hi hello welcome to another i cri session today i'm gonna talk about a topic that is overshadowed or just dulled by now which is Afghans in india. some of you may be shocked some of you are haa pata tha ki there are Afghans in india but how many? and where?

yes. that's a lot of Afghans. now let me open up a history lesson. from the early nineteenth century Afghans have had good relations with the Indian subcontinent which is maybe because the delhi sultanate and the mughals came from these areas and beyond. Afghan merchants often visited coastal trading cities like Calcutta (now kolkata) for sweet sweet trade deals. rich afghans visited india (after independence) as a summer stay. and the trading went on too. that all changed when their royal king Zahir Shah was overthrown in a coup by his cousin, Daoud Khan on 17 July, 1973, thus abolishing the monarchy. after the coup (which landed some gunshots and violence but was without bloodshed) life went on in Afghanistan as usual but Afghans would soon know this to be "the start of the fall". in the December of 1979, the Soviet union invaded Afghanistan. this war stretched out for at least ten years. this was when the Afghans lost their land became fugitives and many ran, to save their children, to save their women, to save their men and mostly to save what shred of Afghanistan that the soviet union had left, and became refugees in u.s.a, pakistan, Iran, Europe and india. mind you this war was bloody, soviet soldiers raped children and women constantly, people were trapped in their own homes and it was very disgusting i hate you for this Soviet union. so after this assholerry when the roussis (Russians) were gone and the Taliban had taken over, people were overjoyed. the war was over Taliban are muslim we're going to be okay. but that meant bad news for hazaras the servant caste who were shi'as not sunnis like the rich pashtuns that were their masters (much like the dalit-brahmin thing). taliban massacred, raped, killed hazaras here and there you know what for? for being there. existing. being so dirty and disgusting while they just be humans. unacceptable to the Taliban! also unacceptable to the Taliban? adultery, music, women, kite flying, women talking loud, education, drinking booze, dancing, flying kites, leaving the house without a full burqa and your abusive man who keeps beating you. and the punishment if you did any of this? cutting your hand off, chopping your feet off, hitting your thighs with a baton, your nails being pulled out of your nailbeds, being gunned in your leg, kicking your stomach till you spit out blood. and the worse was for adulterers. they were led to a stadium. they were buried in soil till their necks. then their heads would be hit repeatedly either witha foot or a bat until their neck cracked. there was always an audience. of course none of these thing mattered if you were the Taliban yourself! you want sex? do it with a little boy! you want music and dancing? make the little boy do it! you want women? make the little boy dress up as one! the Taliban made Afghans run faster, to the countries they had run to before just trying to live to hold on.
now you may ask how is this torturous and triggering paragraph relevant to india? lemme tell you, these battered bruised mentally/physically tortured people are hated here. after what they went through. who hates them? modi does. like he hates every other minority sab bhaad me jaaye. his supporters call them illegal (a living breathing person is illegal wow), jihadi, talibani, meat eating bastards and the one i hate the most, "go back to your country" you're going to seriously say that to a guy who saw his mother and his sister get raped in front of his eyes, his father being shot in his chest eight times, his fiancee being dragged by her hair to who knows where? you're going to say "go back to your country" to this guy? for fuck's sake do you think that he doesn't want to return to the Afghanistan of his childhood? where people had kite flying festivals in winter? where pakoras fumed the streets? where women wore henna on their wedding day? where children complained about homework? don't you ever stop and think about how much he has to forget and remove from his memory just because they hurt too much to go back to? don't you have a heart you asshole. now again the CAA and nrc the bills we hate with our life and soul were going to send these people to internment camps (possibly back to Afghanistan) (p.s. some of these people very poor of them don't even have an aadhar card), specifically because after seeing the Taliban kill off most of his family he needs to come to India legally like a gentleman and not flee the country the first and fastest chance he gets because dude manners. and for that fuck the modi administration

what i don't understand is why americans don't just... leave. like. just fucking leave. i'm from india and honestly it's like, a crappy country, esp if you're a woman, or dalit, or muslim, or queer, and literally every young person i know is tryna leave even though forex makes it nearly impossible, and racism makes getting visas or green cards an absolute nightmare and indian degrees and work experience have little worth in other countries, and they have to go FAR to get a better life so i don't understand why americans, especially white middle class americans who can get visas easily and literally only need to cross over a border to canada and have credentials that are respected in most countries, dont just fucking leave like. you're one major sickness away from bankruptcy!!!! get out!!!! motherfucker!!!! this ain't normal!!!

hi! saw ur meme abt the caa and idk i could be wrong but its my understanding that it doesn’t really directly affect current citizens? like the caa doesn’t remove citizenship, but instead provides a fast track for people who are hindus, christians, etc. im very anti-caa (its so blatantly islamophobic wtf) but i also think indian politics has so so much misinformation. just bc u mentioned that millions would be stateless and idk if that’s accurate
when you look at the combined damages that CAA and NRC can do... it really can strip citizenship of millions of people in india. not just illegal muslim immigrants but also adivasis, transfolk, dalits, poor people... basically anyone who cannot produce verification of their ancestry of having lived in india. and no, aadhar card is not "proof", according to am*t sh*h. you need government issued documents that state your grandparents name. and they need to be from before 1971. so if you've lost track of your documents, then too bad... you're not an indian citizen. this is why there are potentially 19 million+ people in assam that were considered as illegally residing when they tried to implement nrc over there. many of them muslim migrants, but many many more who simply did not have the documentation to prove that they've lived in india and so did their ancestors before them. here's a link to all the required documents (x). here's another link for a basic rundown of how harmful CAA + NRC is to those of us who aren't immigrants (x)
