“As soon as you begin to ask the question, Who loves me? you are completely screwed, because the next question is How Much? and then it is hundreds of hours later, and you are still hunched over your flowcharts and abacus, trying to decide if you have gotten enough. This is the loneliest job in the world: to be an accountant of the heart. It is late at night. You are by yourself, and all around you, you can hear the sounds of people moving in and out of love, pushing the turnstiles, putting their coins in the slots, paying the price which is asked, which constantly changes. No one knows why.”

““When I was about 20 years old, I met an old pastor’s wife who told me that when she was young and had her first child, she didn’t believe in striking children, although spanking kids with a switch pulled from a tree was standard punishment at the time. But one day, when her son was four or five, he did something that she felt warranted a spanking–the first in his life. She told him that he would have to go outside himself and find a switch for her to hit him with. The boy was gone a long time. And when he came back in, he was crying. He said to her, “Mama, I couldn’t find a switch, but here’s a rock that you can throw at me.” All of a sudden the mother understood how the situation felt from the child’s point of view: that if my mother wants to hurt me, then it makes no difference what she does it with; she might as well do it with a stone. And the mother took the boy into her lap and they both cried. Then she laid the rock on a shelf in the kitchen to remind herself forever: never violence. And that is something I think everyone should keep in mind. Because if violence begins in the nursery one can raise children into violence.””

so rare to see investigative reporting like this in india. this is a video about how indian pharmaceutical companies, and improper enforcement of laws surrounding imports and exports of these drugs are fueling the opiod crisis in west africa. brilliant job by the bbc. it's worth a watch.

You're also right about 'regressive' being the real term for what Trump and the oligarch's who own him are doing. Like we're going backwards and all minorities and woman are at risk.
pretty much. i kinda had indian politics in mind when i wrote that post (india has also had a right wing party in place for the past decade) but yes, you're right. i always feel like left leaning parties come to power, pass meaningful reforms which take countries forward 2 steps and then these guys come along and they take it back 20. like... it's disheartening. it's so hard to build something meaningful but so easy to destroy things. and worse, it's not just that they're doing damage to the people through reforms that will hurt them... they also corrupt the cultural consciousness of the country. like MAGA basically pushing this white supremacist, christianity based idea of family towards the people and rejecting and creating hatred towards anyone who doesn't fit that mould. and in india, BJP (the ruling party) doing pretty much the same by being Hindu supremacists. it's heartbreaking to see people you've known your whole life agree to this kinda regressive thinking as well.
