The UPSC examination is one of the toughest tests around. Recently, even ChatGPT failed to clear the first hurdle. What are the challenges faced by those preparing for it?

Tamilvendhan R hails from a village in Thanjavur district. He was brought up by his single mother who is a daily-wage laborer. Presently working with a leading private firm in Chennai, Tamilvendhan is an IAS aspirant.

Way back in 2018 when he set out with the ambition to crack the Union Public Service Commission Examination, he was an unemployed youth. It seemed like the odds were stacked against him.

But Tamilvendhan was not to be deterred. He shifted to Chennai with the aim of fulfilling his dream.

Civil Services. Thousands dream of cracking the prestigious exam each year to embrace a career that they believe offers them the power and privilege to change lives — including theirs — for the better.

Tamilvendhan recalls the challenges he faced in his initial days,

After reaching Chennai, he took up a part-time job and gave tuitions to children to supplement his income and buy books for the UPSC exams.

“I found myself in a tight corner. There was a time when I needed a book to prepare but there was no money as I hadn’t received my salary for the part-time job I was doing then,” he said.

Tamilvendhan frequently thought about his mother. Back home, his mother too thought about him. She sent him money whenever he was in dire straits.

Amma Unavagam turned out to be a boon. Moreover, whenever he faced a financial crisis, his friends were quick to bail him out.

He recalled that there were occasions when he felt like giving up and returning home since he was unable to make ends meet in Chennai. His passion and determination to succeed, however, gave him the strength to face the challenges and stay the course.

He remembers another hurdle. At his village, people were always asking him about what he was doing.

‘’During the early days of preparation, I had trouble making the villagers understand my pursuit. They would ask me whether I would complete my studies this year. I used to explain it to them. But later on I got tired repeating the same narrative to everyone every time,” he said.

These days, he hardly bothers. All that matters is his goal.

The mental strength the exam demands is huge. Whenever he feels low, he reassures himself that his present situation is better than the past.

Tamilvendhan is highly optimistic about his preparation and shares, “I am improving and progressing in life. I firmly believe that my efforts will not go in vain. I can totally understand what I knew before I began preparing and how my knowledge has expanded manifold now. If I am able to move ahead in life, it is not only because of my hard work and effort but also because of my focus and clarity of thoughts. I have derived a lot of benefits apart from knowledge through my UPSC preparation and it is helping me out in many ways and it in turn is one of the many reasons for my relentless hope.”

‘Don’t demotivate me’

Pressure from society is something Suganthan L is also grappling with. An automobile engineering graduate, presently in Coimbatore, he has been preparing full-time for the Civil Services exam for the past few years.

“I wish that those relatives who can’t support me can at least avoid demotivating me,” he says.

Suganthan underwent coaching at a premier institute in Delhi for one year, right after completing his graduation.

He confides that “my relatives expected that I will start earning quickly. Most did not know the process involved in cracking UPSC and how tiresome it can at times be. Instead, they make comparisons with others who are employed and brush aside my ambition.”

When asked about how psychologically taxing the examination is, he says “The process is so tiring and it has broken me very badly at times, making me feel like quitting. But, I give up the thought always as I have high self-confidence.”

His mother and brother have been supporting him constantly and that has given him the mental strength to make fresh attempts at attaining his goal every year.

Suganthan has also turned to yoga to take care of his physical and mental well-being.

‘Self-motivation and inner drive’

Obaid Abdullah, a mechanical engineering graduate and a UPSC aspirant from Baramulla, Kashmir, believes that what keeps him going “is self-motivation and the inner drive to achieve personal goals.”.

He also adds that ‘’It is not uncommon for moments of self-doubt, stress, and anxiety during the journey of preparation.” He admits that he is largely cooped up in his room as preparation requires a lot of dedication and time.

When asked how friends, family, and society at large can change their perspective, he says that it will be really encouraging if they try to have measured expectations and are sensitive to the mental health of the aspirants. He finds that emotional and moral support from near ones plays a crucial role in the preparation.

‘Having a backup plan is essential’

Talking about the uncertainties involved in the exam, Arun B, an automobile engineering graduate and a long-time UPSC aspirant based in Chennai, says, “Having a backup plan is essential as one sets aside prime years of their life for the preparation and the journey to success might be longer than expected.’’

Arun has recently cleared the SSC-MTS Examination, his backup plan.

Deepak Kumar Mandia, an aspirant and a law graduate based in Faridkot, Punjab, says that adaptability to changing exam patterns, time management, and achieveing consistency in preparation are his major challenges.

When asked about specific efforts he has taken to adapt to the tiring and strenuous preparation, he says,’’ I always try to develop a positive mindset before studying. I take short breaks in between the preparation to break the monotony and recoup. I ignore negative influences and keep myself enthusiastic. I learn from my mistakes and make sure that I don’t repeat them.”

He also adds that ‘over the years, I have realized it is equally important to take care of my health . Now, I am more aware of the need of a balanced diet and regular exercise.’’

Cyclone Tauktae in the Arabian Sea intensifies along the Western Coasts of India .. from the South moving up .. the effects of its arrival have begun here in Mumbai with rain as I write ..  the preparations for the monsoon rain sheds had just begun so the vulnerability of leaks , is there and the dealing with rain leakages about is a concern .. we try to make some make shift arrangements .. but they are weak and not entirely protective .. 

The severity of the monsoons as you all know is massive and all buildings and locations become most vulnerable during those 3-4 months of its presence ..

The JVPD Scheme is a low lying area and flooding is most imminent .. so ..

The word ‘tauktae’ .. the naming of storms cyclones typhoons et all are taken up and suggested by the countries in the region and this name has been given by Myanmar , erstwhile Burma , which is the name of a ‘vocal lizard’ ..

The work though on the care fronts continues and happily I was able to deliver the first lot of 10 ventilators to the desired locations .. the Municipal Corporation of the City , and 3 Hospitals and one clinic .. the balance 10 that I have ordered should be in in a few days and they too shall be distributed to care centres and Hospitals in dire need .. 

6 were sent to the BMC, under the request of its Commissioner Mr Iqbal Singh Chahal, who has done great innovative work in controlling the spread of the virus in the City, by bringing down the numbers .. the ventilators were asked to be directed to his Addl., Com., Mr Chore, who then directed it to ms Shashibala, the lady from the Comm., office looking after deliveries , who then directed us to send it to the Andheri Sports Complex to Mr Raju Palkar, who has received them and the distribution shall be under the discretion of BMC, looking at the various needs .. 

I shall be requesting the BMC to let me have a report on the delivery, the setting up and the functioning of these machines at the allocated locations, so we can keep a record of its proper usage ..

The other 4 have been delivered to Hospitals - Sion Hospital along with some accessories that they needed to help in the detection process in these times ; Nair Hospital ;  Kaleskar Hospital  and the Jewel Nursing Home .. 

This is no way a reflection or an indication , that these Hospitals do not have facilities of their own, they do, but in extenuating circumstances, such as what we are facing, every drop counts ..  

The first consignment of the 50 Oxygen Concentrators ordered and bought by me from Poland should be on a plane as I write, and shall be landing in Delhi by 6 am tomorrow morning, on the Polish Airline LOT .. flight WAW/DEL /LO 1071 .. these shall be cleared by the Gurudwara Committee where I have donated in the building of the 400 bed facility and which was inaugurated the other day .. 300 functional immediately and the balance 100 in due time .. and the O2 concentrators shall also be donated to this facility for their discretionary use.

These are the 10 litre concentrators, but research from my office informs me that the 5 litre ones are also acceptable and in greater demand .. so I have bought another 50 oxygen concentrators today of the 5 litre capacity, and hopefully they should be despatched to us in a few days .. these shall be distributed to the needy facilities in Mumbai ..

My gratitude and gracious thanks to several people in the fructification of this delivery - The Govt.of Poland, the Mayor of Wroclaw,   Mr Jacek Sutryk , the Indian Ambassador Mr Namgyal, and the Indian Consul Mr Johri for most generously helping in easing the logistics of transporting it over to India. 

The 25 bedded Care Centre that I had donated for to be put up in a School in Juhu is happily all ready .. the facilities are all in place .. and just today the relevant OC’s have beem obtained from the BMC and the Fire Brigade .. just one more permission is due to come tomorrow and with that the facility shall be ready to operate by Tuesday or Wednesday .. this is for the really needy and those that cannot afford the expenses required for their treatment ..

And the Diagnostic Centre that I donated to for the Bangla Sahib Centre for the needy at free to very low affordable rates is all set and the MRI machine and some other ancillaries that I bought for them, all supplied and ready for operation ..

There is always a sense of satisfaction on seeing your efforts at giving to the needy .. to those in distress .. to them that have lost their jobs due to the non functional-ability of their work professions .. those on the daily wages .. those who’s production films have been stopped because no shootings are allowed .. those who had bet their last Rupee on the completion of a film or a web series they were working on and getting paid .. 

I give wherever I can .. my means are extremely limited .. it may not seem so , but they are .. somehow by the grace of the Almighty they come to me .. I have not made any effort to collect them through campaigns or donations to a cause that I may have instituted .. I just feel asking someone for funds is embarrassing for me .. yes there have been events in the past where the voice is for contributing, but I feel uncomfortable to ask , to contribute .. I may have partaken in the event as a voice over, but never directly asked to give or contribute .. and if there have been such unseen or unknown incidents then I seek forgiveness .. 

I have, not out of seeking praise, given descriptions of the work done this time, but just to assure all, of the delivery and the visuals of where the funds have been used and to what avail .. that they are not just blank promises .. 

There have been many such campaigns and events where the organisers have collected funds for most worthy causes .. and that is most laudable .. but with all due respect and modesty, at times the amount that I have personally individually donated, matches the funds collected out of the campaigns ..

This has probably been a most un endearing post for the Blog .. and I do apologise for that .. for one that has ever promulgated a desire to be silent and do my work, I have crossed my own LOC - the Line of Control ..

Let’s Talk About What’s Happening In India Right Now

In the states of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, and many others. Farmers are in parrel and protesting to keep their jobs alive and keep their families fed. 

Farmers in India already don't have it good. With getting paid the bare minimum, having to work in 100 degree weather, on top of providing for their families. The Governemnt has kept them steady and under protection for a while now, but all that went away when A set of three laws passed in September aims to deregulate India’s enormous agriculture sector. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said they will “liberate” farmers from the tyranny of the middle class.

Many farmers. fear that they will lose more than they can gain for these new laws. Fearing that the big corporate companies will overthrow them.

What These Laws Do

These laws make it so that farmers will no longer get the minimum price/wage that legally set for them before, investors and cooperation would be termining that for them.

These laws, they make it easier for farmers to bypass government-regulated markets and sell produce directly to private buyers. With this, buyers can hoard and trade. This also means that they could and can raise up the prices, in the pandemic. Which was a criminal offence under the previous rules.

And many families across the nation are already suffering enough.

This Is A Problem Because

More than 86% of India’s cultivated farmland is controlled by smallholder farmers, who own less than five acres of land each. They fear that they do not have enough bargaining power to get the kinds of prices they need for a decent standard of living when they need too negotiate to sell their produce to larger companies.

“The government has left us at the mercy of big corporations,” Rashpinder Singh, 27, a farmer from Punjab state, told Al Jazeera in September. “It is preposterous to believe that farmers who have small land holdings will have any bargaining power over private players.”

Many protesters are getting beaten by police and the media is doing nothing about it. Farmers cant takethis issue to the court since it doesn't classify as a court induced issue.

With the new law passing farmers wont even be guaranteed with the pricing of the food, and farmers worry that the existing MSP will be abolished at some point. This would be a big blow to farmers who grow the foods that are currently eligible for the MSP, many of whom are from Punjab and Haryana, the home states of a large proportion of the protesters out on the roads.

And because of this a lot of farmers are going ing dept. And the result of that has been the fact that 1 out of 10 farmers commit suicide daily (that has been recorded)

What The Government Has Said

Modi has dismissed the farmer's fears as misplaced and blamed opposition political parties for spreading false rumors regarding the fate of farmers under the new born laws.

“The new agricultural laws have been brought in for benefit of the farmers. We will see and experience benefits of these new laws in the coming days,” Modi said on Monday.

Protests

Many farmers went on peaceful protests. Although in Delhi and many other places they were struck with tear gas. They were attacked with water canons. They wear beat up. They were arrested. And allthey were doing was fighting for their rights.

Helping Is A Good Thing

At the end of the. day, these are the farmers that provide many with food. Out of state, and out of country. Many families are suffering. Husbands, wifes, children.

Tintinizing India - A story of life

If you are a Bengali who thrived when a misguided economic well-being did not threaten your mother tongue to its core, there is absolutely no chance that you have not been a part of the love that we always showed for detectives. We had our own Byomkesh, Feluda, Kiriti Roy, we had Sherlock and his overtly British demeanour. All of them possessed certain traits that were either something we had or something we desired. But among them, was an intrepid reporter from Brussels, who, without being something resembling our desires, burst into fame and remained famous ever since. The impact was so huge that it startled the creator of the character itself. He, always proclaiming that Tintin was his soul and that the character will cease to exist after him, was shocked by the love Tintin received from this tiny part of the world.

"I receive a lot of mail from India. Here, in my office, are two letters from Calcutta. Now, what can there be in common between a boy in Calcutta and myself?"

Why or how this tryst with Tintin started, is still a mystery to me.

In fact, the whole of India has always been a big admirer of Tintin. So much so, it has been such a crowd puller that Sony decided to release Spielberg’s Adventures of Tintin (2011) in India six weeks before it’s official release in USA. The movie still stands to be the highest grossing animated film in the country and also the animated feature film to receive the biggest opening ever. The comic books, adapted in Hindi around 2010, became and instant success and still remains to be one of the most sold comic series of all time.

However, that has not been the first time when Tintin spoke an Indian Language. Thirty years before it’s Hindi translation, Tintin was translated in a Bengali magazine, called Anandamela, for the first time. Aveek Sarkar, the same person who recently became famous through the comments made by our honourable CM, was the person who travelled the distance to meet Herge and ask for the rights to translate Tintin in Bengali. Till today, all the 23 translated versions released by Ananda Publishers remains to be an essential part of a Bengali childhood. Coincidentally, the first time I came to know about Tintin was not from one his stories or any news article. It was through one of my childhood heroes, the detective I have mentioned previously, Satyajit Ray’s Feluda. Ray, one of the biggest representatives of Bengali mindset, was a huge admirer of Tintin himself. His wonderfully woven brainchild Feluda, not only speaks about Tintin in several occasions, but somehow loosely resembles him in a lot of ways.

But why has Tintin always been so impactful? To answer that, we must know who Herge was, in what period was Tintin created and what were the stories trying to tell. Being born on 1907 in Belgium, George Remi a.k.a Herge was always destined to be living in midst of everything the three unimaginable decades presented the world with. Yes, Herge was there all through the world wars and was allegedly arrested for being a Nazi collaborator. Tintin was first published in 1929, but his story starts before that, when Herge started creating illustrations for the first time. Sources state Herge started creating illustrations during his school days as a protest against the German troops who occupied Belgium back then, during the First World War. However, the first notable published illustrations of Herge was about a boy-scout named Totor, who was inspired from his teen days as a boy scout. We can, therefore, safely assume that Totor, was the stepping stone that eventually lead to creation of Tintin. But that is not the same version of Tintin we all love and admire. The first three books (Tintin in the Land of Soviets (1930), Tintin in Congo (1931) and Tintin in America (1932)) were created with the initial beliefs that Herge possessed. Land of Soviets was about the ills of communism whereas Tintin in Congo, a brilliant portrayal of the diamond mining in Africa, was in itself way too racist than what is acceptable today. Tintin in America was a masterpiece though, and it was the one that perhaps cemented Tintin’s position in the world on Comics. The books portrayal of Native Americans, the Al Capone resemblances along with the attention to details makes it the most selling telling book till date.

Then, in 1934, came Cigars of Pharaoh. For the world, it introduced Rastapopoulos, Tintin’s nemesis and who’s similarity with stereotypical anti-Semitic portrayals will be talked about for a few decades. For us, it introduced India through Tintin’s eyes when the reporter’s plane crashed in a deep forest and he had to find his way out by becoming the official doctor of an elephant herd. The caricatures were what you can expect from a European of that time. The main villain is half-naked Fakir who throws darts mixed in a poison called Rajaija and makes the victim mad. The king of Gaipajama opposes opium trade and almost dies, Snowy is almost killed for abusing a holy cow. Not the ideal eh? So, anyone with the slightest idea of the rift between India and China can understand what comes next when the poppies are mentioned. But that was never the case. Why? Because in order to study the Orient, Herge was introduced to a Chinese named Zhang, the man who later became his best mate and can be credited for helping Tintin find his way.

The Blue Lotus (1936) starts where Cigars of Pharaoh ended and talks about the real China that was never talked about. Starting with the opium trade, Herge slowly shifts away to talk about Japans invasion of Manchuria and eventually, the second world war. The portrayal in so overwhelmingly wonderful, specially from an outsider, that it can be categorised as masterpiece similar to Spielberg-Christian Bale’s magnificent storytelling of Empires of the Sun.

Before WWII started and Belgium surrendered to German invasion, Herge wrote two more books (The Broken Ear and The Black Island) where the narrative primarily focused on adventure rather than politics. In 1939, just when the world prepared for WWII, Tintin saves Syldavia from a fascist leader in King Ottokar’s Sceptre. But the war meant Herge would eventually work under Nazi supervision and that was the case. Tintin goes up against a rich American Jewish man in The Shooting Star (1942). However, the books that followed this, namely The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure (1943-44), are considered to be his best works. Soon, WWII ended and Herge became a free man of the free world. Only, he was barred from creating Tintin because of his status as a Nazi collaborator.

Have you heard of a parody called Tintin in the Land of Nazis?

Fortunately, though, the world was lenient on Herge. After few years, he was allowed to write. Then came the Seven Crystal Balls (1948) and Prisoners of the Sun (1949), where Tintin meets the Incas. Land of the Black Gold (1951) talked about oil crisis way before it’s time, Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon (1953-54) made Tintin walk on moon way before Armstrong, Calculus Affair(1956) showed us cold war and Tintin in Tibet (1960) was all about finding a lost friend Chang (or, should we say Zhang from China?). Herge was so magnificent with his imagination as well as realisation of the world, the none of these stories fall out of place when compared with real history. Here, in Tintin in Tibet, we see a picturization of a New Delhi bazaar, so accurate and mesmerising, that you can almost forget the pent-up anger from what you read about India previously.  

So, after all this, why do we Indians still love Tintin when we are so bored to talk about the World Wars? 

Maybe it is because of how we have lived over the years. 

We, the modern Indians, are descendants of countless wars that waged within our boundaries for centuries and still, our recent history is all about the 200 years of colonialism and small battles for the sake of independence. In that time, towards the end of the British rule, the world wars waged from America to Turkey to Japan. We were the biggest army of WWII and yet none of the folklore reeks of India. So, like Eve’s never-ending quench for the forbidden fruit, we have always been attracted to the politics around the world that never affected our daily lives. Be it the world wars, the oil crisis or the cold war. Heck Armstrong is perhaps more popular than Rakesh Sharma today. That is what precisely Herge did to us. He talked about the biggest crisis in simplest of way. It was a mixture of satire, truth, fantasy and romanticism. We drank it all.

Or maybe it is because of what Tintin resembled. 

He was not a superhero. He was a decent looking reporter from somewhere beyond kaalapani, who has no ill vices, does the right thing, dresses neatly and most importantly wander in the land of unknown without any fear. He has a job for which he earns enough money to sponsor his trips, without a father asking him about his goals in life and a mother asking him to tie the knot. Plus, he does not talk about romance, neither mentally nor physically. Isn’t he the perfect gateway to the dreams we have always dreamt for ourselves? In Bengal, he came early with the taste of wanderlust, mystery and subtle remarks about politics. The three things that catches our imagination within a second. Moreover, being an ideal representation of a Bengali mother’s perfect child helped him fly into a little child’s bookshelf. From where he never disappeared, just got passed down from one generation to the other.

Moving out of the literature, let us talk about the technicalities. With his brilliant brush and realisation of perspective, Herge talks about the society at large, it’s functions, barriers and all those hard terms an economist use in a such a simple words and pictures that makes you feel at ease while brushing through them. You don’t realise, but your subconscious does and stores it, and redirects you to that same picture over and over again. Remember the brilliant picturization of Moon, the detailed underwater see through the shark-shaped submarine, or, my favourite, the wonderfully detailed picturization of a make-believe Inca King’s Diwan-e-Aam when Tintin and co. accidentally barges in. The side characters did their part as well. Haddock was as funny as he was serious. He was honest, comical, painfully drunkard, yet something about him made you follow his footsteps. Or else, billions of blistering barnacles will head your way. Calculus was genius lost in his own life. Bianca was ever-reliable, Thompson twins were the ever-humorous.

Tintin was a mixture of everything. 

He taught us politics, he taught us history, he taught us science, astronomy as well as companionship. Personally, he taught me what quarantine stands for, where llamas are found, why an elephant trumpets, why glasses break when Bianca Sings. He was also my primer to calculus.

For nation that has always aspired more than it could grasp, a small Polynesian boy became the ray of hope and continues to do so, with flying colours. For the young kids who either loved or hated to read, Tintin gave their imaginations the fuel it required.

So, as an ode to the millions who tread this path before me, and to the billions to follow after, I hereby raise my toast to celebrate yet another product of the war-stricken days. The one which made us believe.

As election nears, religious tensions surge in an Indian village

NAYABANS, India (Reuters)--Nayabans isn’t remarkable as northern Indian villages go. Sugar cane grows in surrounding fields, women carry animal feed in bullock carts through narrow lanes, people chatter outside a store, and cows loiter.

But this week, the village in Uttar Pradesh state became a symbol of the deepening communal divide in India as some Hindu men from the area complained they had seen a group of Muslims slaughtering cows in a mango orchard a couple of miles away.

That infuriated Hindus, who regard the cow as a sacred animal. Anger against Muslims turned into outrage that police had not stopped an illegal practice, and a Hindu mob blocked a highway, threw stones, burned vehicles and eventually two people were shot and killed--including a police officer.

The events throw a spotlight on the religious strains in places like Nayabans since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power at the national level in 2014 and in Uttar Pradesh in 2017. Tensions are ratcheting up ahead of the next general election, due to be held by May.

Nayabans, just about three hour’s drive from Delhi, has about 400 Muslims out of a population of 4,000, the rest are Hindu. Relations between the communities began deteriorating around the Muslim holy month of Ramadan last year when Hindus in the village demanded that loudspeakers used to call for prayer at a makeshift mosque be removed, local Muslims said.

“For 40 years mikes were used in the mosque, calls for prayer were made five times a day, but no one objected,” said Waseem Khan, a 28-year-old Muslim community leader in Nayabans.

“We resisted initially but then we thought it’s better to live in peace then create a dispute over a mike,” he said. “We don’t want to give them a chance to fan communal tensions.”

Reuters spoke with more than a dozen Muslims from the village but except for Khan, no one else wanted to be named for fear of angering the Hindu population.

Several among a group of Muslim women and girls standing outside the mosque said they have been living in fear since the BJP came to power in the state in 2017.

They said that Hindu groups now hold provocative processions through the village during every Hindu festival, loudspeakers blaring, something that used to happen rarely before. They said they felt “terrorized” by Hindu activists.

“While passing through our areas during their religious rallies, they chant ‘Pakistan murdabad’ (down with Pakistan) as if we have some connection to Pakistan just because we are Muslims,” Khan said.

The subcontinent was divided into Muslim Pakistan and Hindu-majority India at the time of independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

During the violence on Monday, many Muslims in Nayabans locked themselves in their homes fearing attacks. Some who had attended a three-day Muslim religious congregation some miles away stayed outside the area that night to avoid making themselves targets for the mob.

Muslim villagers say they are particularly fearful of the top elected official in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is a Hindu priest and senior BJP figure. Hindu hardliners started asserting themselves more in the village after he was elected, they say.

Uttar Pradesh sends 80 lawmakers to the lower house of parliament, the largest of any state in the country.

Considered the county’s political crucible, it has also been the scene for spiraling Hindu-Muslim tensions.

Police say they have arrested up to five people for the cow slaughter but have not given their religion. Locals say all the arrested people are Muslims. At least five Hindu men, including an off-duty soldier who was home during the violence, have been arrested for the unrest leading to the deaths.

“All invidious elements who may have conspired to vitiate the situation will be exposed through a fair and transparent investigation,” Anand Kumar, the second highest police official in Uttar Pradesh, told Reuters.

The two communities in Nayabans have lived in relative harmony for years, residents from both groups said.

But now Hindus in the village accuse the Muslims of trying to turn themselves into the victims when they weren’t.

“Can’t believe they are raising our processions with journalists!” said Daulat, a Hindu daily wage laborer who goes by one name. “They are making it a Hindu-Muslim issue, we are not. Their people have been accused of killing cows, so they are playing the victim.”

At a middle school, meters from the police outpost near where the two men got killed, two women teachers, sitting on a veranda soaking in the winter sun, said its 66 students stopped coming for classes in the first few days after the violence.

“We worship cows and their slaughter can’t be accepted,” said one of the teachers, Uma Rani. “Two Hindus died here but nothing happened to the cow killers.”

Both teachers were Hindus.

Political analysts say relations between the two communities are likely to stay tense ahead of the national vote, particularly in polarized states such as Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP made a near-clean sweep in Uttar Pradesh in 2014, helping Modi win the country’s biggest parliamentary mandate in three decades, but pollsters predict a tighter contest next year because of a lack of jobs and low farm prices.

“Facing economic headwinds and lackluster job growth, Modi will rally his conservative base by selectively resorting to Hindu nationalism,” global security consultancy Stratfor said last month.

On Sunday, more than 100,000 Hindu monks and activists close to the BJP held a rally in Delhi demanding legislation for the construction of a Hindu temple on the site of a 16th century mosque that was pulled down in 1992, sparking riots across the country that killed about 2,000 people. I asked her about her experience attending such a highly regarded fashion school, and she explained that most of the time it was independent work and that many professors were long-winded with many of the lectures they gave to students. It just goes to show how different it can be to get an education in the United States versus getting one in another country.

           Ms. Goldberg also touched upon how things were different back in the 1990’s when she was job hunting. During that time, LinkedIn was not around for you to showcase your talents and skills to employers, so what Ms. Goldberg did was look for job openings in the newspaper and in magazines such as Women’s Wear Daily. For me this demonstrates just how much technology has changed our lives and the way we conduct business. Shelley Goldberg started off working for a well known 90’s designer brand which she explained consisted of working almost 10 plus hour days everyday and creating new, fresh designs that she was never compensated for. She talked about the challenges of being there and then left to begin her career at Ann Taylor designing and working in a corporate setting which was a shift from working for a smaller designer company. Then, she began working at West Elms designing in fashion but realized that she wasn’t super passionate about what she was doing, and one day one of the directors at West Elm asked her, if she could get paid to do any job in the world what would it be and to that she responded working in home goods designing rugs.

           From that day forward, she worked for West Elm for five years designing rugs for their home goods category. After hearing this I never really thought about people working in fashion could transfer and look to create products of their own in the home goods category. This goes to show that the fashion industry encompasses many roles and products that can be created. After working for West Elm, Ms. Goldberg started her career at Raj Overseas being the face of the brand in the U.S. market looking to work with home good buyers from Target, West Elm, and Urban Outfitters. Raj Overseas factory is located just outside of New Delhi, India and employs several women and men paying them a living wage to feed their families. They are a socially responsible supplier and seek to produce the best rugs for their clients. I enjoyed this visit because now I see another aspect of fashion, home goods, that I could work for since it is such a growing industry.
