What love means

Defining love and understanding whether our love for others is genuine can be a confusing journey. We often question if our efforts truly measure up, if we're giving the kind of love that others deserve. At times, our love feels inadequate, leaving us to doubt its authenticity and depth.

On the other hand, amidst various definitions of love, I've found one that stands out as both simple and profound: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

This passage presents a timeless view of genuine love: patient, kind, and free from jealousy, arrogance, or selfishness. It respects others, prioritizes their well-being, forgives readily, and embraces honesty, facing life's challenges with unwavering hope and protection.

Embracing and practicing these principles challenges us to extend patient, kind, and unselfish love, supporting, trusting, and persevering in our relationships to one another. With God's daily transformation of our characters, He prepares us to represent this love for others. As we experience His love, we are enabled to share and manifest His love for one another effectively.

Masuyo was snapped out of her work with a knock against her cubical, her gaze shifting behind her.

❝ Mr. Torejima wants to see you. ❞

It was Torejima's assistant, well, one of his assistants. She had been working hard, as always, her spreadsheet could wait for a few. A small nod is given to the assistant.

❝ Of course, I'll be there right away. ❞

Heels softly click against the floor as she makes her way to his office, gently opening the door before stepping in. A slender looking man sat in his chair, golden orbs glancing over at the accountant once she made her way in, gloved hand moving away from his temple to clasp with his other.

❝ Ms. Itami, have a seat. ❞

If this were during her early days working with the company; then Masuyo would be shaking in her boots, wondering if she did anything wrong or made a mistake, or maybe a co-worker filed a complaint about her. But being with the company for five years, & dealing with Torejima; she knew better.

He relied on her. She knew that.

❝ Have you been enjoying your time off ?? Relaxing weekends ?? ❞

False pleasantries.

❝ As well as I can. ❞

❝ - Well, I haven't. ❞

Torejima was always quick to get down to brass tacks, he... "Favors" Masuyo more than anyone else in the accounting department, the hardest of workers, the most responsible.

The most obedient.

❝ Did you hear about the layoffs ?? Half of R&D is gone. Going to have to go through a hiring process, have a lot of paperwork to go through on that. A lot of... Spreadsheets. ❞

His golden eyes look up at her, expectingly. To which he is only met with a blank stare, not that she showed any real dissatisfaction or disappointment, she was merely waiting for him to finish his thought.

❝ & I was wondering if maybe you could help us with that, perhaps on your off-time ?? ❞

Ah, there it was.

❝ Help out a little, be a team player. ❞

It was this sort of talk that Masuyo had grown accustomed to, it was his polite way of saying "I need this off my hands, you do it", this was nowhere in her contract or job description, the workload of others being put onto the shoulders of a single woman.

But all she can do is nod slightly.

❝ Whatever you need me to do, sir. ❞

As stated before. Obedient.

❝ Excellent... Did you manage to get that balance sheet sent off ?? ❞

❝ I was working on it before you called me over here. ❞

A slight slip of her tongue, what came off as annoyance is quickly corrected to assurance.

❝ I'll have it done by end of day, sir. ❞

Torejima offers a small nod of approval, a soft "splendid" comes from his lips.

❝ Was there anything else you wished to talk about, sir ?? ❞

❝ Well, I like to get on a more personal level, to check in with my... Finer employees. To check on morale, you could say. Um... How are you... ?? ❞

Empathy was not his strong suit, whether that be due to his cybernetics or just lack thereof from the get-go, she could tell how he struggled to even make up such an excuse. She was well aware he only did this so that she'd stay loyal & do what he says.

It is what it is.

❝ I'm doing alright, sir. Nothing exciting has happened as of late. ❞

❝ Good, now that we have that out of the way- ❞

Torejima reaches over to a stack of paperwork on his desk, handing it over to Masuyo.

❝ Could you hand this over to Ms. Roberts ?? I need these done by end of day, as well. Always a pleasure, Ms. Itami. ❞

A soft sigh escapes her mouth as she stands up, accepting the paper- work as she begins to walk out of his office.

❝ Of course, sir. ❞

Day after day, the same routine, the same workload, just different numbers. What a drag... She'll complain, just not to his face, or to anyone who would tell. But in reality... This was as cushy as it got, Torejima was just a very unfortunate manager.

Tsunami Defense Systems was good to their employees, no "slave wage" or dead-end like many of the other corporate companies in Night City. She was lucky to be employed to such a place... It's what she kept saying to herself.

Wolfgang was right about the life she lived, a life of monotony, of contentment. Right now, as she sighed tiredly, wandering over to her co-worker's cubical, all she can think is...

Hmm I think I’m gonna tell dahlia about my concerns of what could’ve potentially happened to me when I was like five and possibly younger but I’ll tell her in a way as if I’m telling a story about something I’ve heard someone say about their own life but it’d be about me actually

"Greenlights: Your Journal. Your Journey" a review

I bought a copy of Matthew McConaughey’s book on journaling last Saturday. It’s called “Greenlights” Your Journal, Your Journey”. The book consists of a number of pages that are largely blank but that contain a writing prompt. Although Mr. McConaughey begins with an explanation with how reviewing his journals in preparation to write a book from them was inspiring, the book results in a resounding thud.  Mr. McConaughey begins by saying that he has been keeping journals for 37 years.  He states in the book’s introduction that the value of journaling is that we get to know ourselves. “When we put pen to paper and share our feelings, thoughts, and opinions with the page, we begin to understand ourselves more clearly, and then begin to customize our lives around who we truly are."

Writing prompts are stifling. That’s what I meant by “thud” above. The true writing prompts are the burns in the day. The insults. The fury over embarrassment . The outrage that has no voice in the avenues of the day, but that must be expressed. I save them to the end of the day. Just before bed. I can hardly wait some nights to let them out onto the page.

So, what I do is open to a blank page in the note book—journal—I date it, and I might start out with some of the details of the day. This can be even writing about the howl of a distant train whistle as I begin writing. And, then I’’ll dive into what was burning from the day. I’ll use the energy from the event to fuel and inform my writing. The writing itself then becomes cathartic. Healing. But, it also leaves a record of the day. A foot print. 

If you do use a writing prompt, trying writing it in the center of a large piece of butcher paper. Draw a circle around the prompt and quickly, draw lines like spokes from a wheel coming out from the circled prompt. As you draw each line, at its end write whatever comes to your head that the prompt invoked. In this way, you can escape the editor in your head and get down a true expression of where you are at with the prompt.

Then , take these prompt insights and weave them into a journal entry.
