I don't know if any of you remember the drawn to life games but they were absolutely my entire childhood. I've been saying I'd love to see another one or a remaster and, unfortunately, Apollo heard me and gave me the former.

They massacared my babies. The art style? Wrong. The themes? Wrong. Level design? Mario maker knock off mobile game.

I'm trying so hard to like this game but goddamn they did not have to do Mari, Mike, Heather and co dirty like this.

I've been playing a lot of DQX lately (+1120 hours!) and I'm now in the middle of v7.1.

I've been debating if I should post this or not. Probably I should not, but I need to talk about it somewhere. I thought it would be okay under a Read More.

⚠️ MASSIVE SPOILERS for Dragon Quest X and other main series entries under the Read More. Read at your own discretion. ⚠️

So in Version 7 not only you visit the Dragon Quest IX world, you learn it's name(Zeniath) and even see the Great Architect.

I've been dying to post this image:

At the point I'm at (middle of episode 7.1) I'm starting the believe Zeniath is the world of DQIX, but not quite. Something like a paralel world of sorts. You're presented some lore and concepts that do check out with DQIX lore (Zenus the Great Architect, Guardian Angels...), but there's also something missing, which leads me to believe its not quite the same world.

I have seen NO mention of Celestria or Yggdrassil yet. Given her significant role in IX as the sole daughter of Zenus, it is strange that she isn't mentioned as one of this daughters. Perhaps something happened to her after IX that lead to her dad being revived (Zenus was divided into the grotto bosses in IX) and having new children?

(They could have a good reason for Celestria/Yggdrassil not being mentioned, if she was affected by the curse afecting both Zeniath and Astoltia. If true, she might appear later on in the expansion, they have only released 7.0 and 7.1 at the time of writting this post )

The lore in versions 5 and 6 (two important celestrians from IX mentioned!) and the 10th anniversary questline lead me to believe DQX was a sequel to DQIX set +10000 years after the DS classic.

Now, after giving some thought to what I've seen of version 7, I'm starting to believe it might not be quite like that. Something ain't right.

(There are also other connections between X and other main games, but those feel more like cameos. There's III, IV and VI characters having cameos in the magic maze; I, III, and XI events; a Nokturnus side story (which implies that his appearence in DQVI happens after being defeated by you in DQX); there is one sidequest involving Malroth and the evil gods from II too; there are legacy bosses in various places... But none seem to affect the lore much or at all. )

I'm sorry if you've been asked this before, but what is your favorite "room" from each game?

Prime: Meditation Fountain. Not the showiest room by any means but incredibly sweet.

Hunters: Fuel Stack. Yes it's a bit frustrating to navigate, but... it looks cool!

Hunters and Prime both have this pattern of extremely vertical rooms, which seems to be echoing the map design in the original Metroid. Which from what I understand was originally a response to the NES' technical limitations with scrolling in multiple directions - the rooms could really only be Horizontal or Vertical, not both.

It turns out this choice also works out well for the limited memory of the DS, since the vertical layout makes it easier to split the room into discrete chunks that can be culled when out of view. So it's both fairly detailed (by DS standards) and technically sound; I don't recall having framerate issues here.

TL;DR it's fun seeing a technical limitation turned into a selling point.

Echoes: Hall of Honored Dead. I had to really think though, this game is gorgeous.

Corruption: Every room in Corruption is my favorite room. But I do really like this save station in Elysia. I didn't play the other Prime games until recently so I had no idea it's a callback. It's nice both on its own and with that connection.

Big setpieces are nice, but it can be exhausting to have every room be jam-packed with Content. Some of my favorite places are interstitial hallways and functional rooms like save rooms or elevators. A moment to breathe.

Log #4 My Best Friends

Disclaimer, this Au goes into detail about death, mentions of sexual assault, cults, religion, gore, and explicit details about violence. viewer discretion is advised. My plans for today went completely down the drain. I was supposed to go try and get on Tims good side in an attempt to gain some favors but it started to rain and it seemed the 3 boys had disappeared from their side of the woods. ████   says they are most likely on patrol which makes me feel slightly bad due to the weather. I didn't let this get me down ( even if the roof to my cabin is leaking) 

████  and I have decided to just relax at home, or try to. I figured it would be productive to do some more logging and since I already have logs on myself, the 4 brothers and a few of the proxies, I figured it would also be beneficial to record my two best friends.

Yurei is the sweetest dog in the world. She has been my loyal service dog for around 4 years now and has helped me everyday we have been together. I love her like she's family and I would give her the world (she deserves it). She knows a many tricks and helps me h█n█ ████ ███ █s████e ████ ████████ it ████ ███████ ██ ██p ████ ███ f█e█h ██ ███ ███ br███ █e █████ c█r██p█  Shes such a good dog. ████  won't tell me much about her past but if I had to guess due to her appearance she passed away in the hospital. I don't wanna pry much since it's probably a sensitive subject but she worries me sometimes. I can tell she tries to have a good time and have fun but there is just this overall sadness that seems to consume her body. Maybe that's a ghost thing but I wish I could help out in any way.

She won't tell me if she had any siblings or anything about her dad but she has talked about her mother a few times. Apparently her mother is very kind and is quite the baker but besides the food her mother made and how she always wanted to be a nurse. She sounds like a very nice lady and I had to guess she might still be alive. A few things Ly has told me are her interests, we often like to play games on my old ds and the shows she often references consist of ‘pretty little liars’ and ‘ jersey shore’. If I had to guess she was alive for the early 2010’s but not much past that. Ly is also very dramatic, she speaks a lot with her hands and knows how to ramble and gossip which isn't too surprising considering i'm the first person she has spoken to since her death, plus i like her dramatics. It helps me understand her body language better and how she is feeling. The three of us are a good trio.

The storm isn't dying down anytime today so I decided to draw ████. She hasn't seen what she looks like since she was alive and since she is a ghost she cant see herself in mirrors so i figured drawing her was the best i could do for her.

████  liked the drawing but afterwards told me to get rid of it. I didnt understand why and figured keeping it in the notebook would be fine. I dont understand why she wanted me to get rid of it.

I left the drawing in the notebook and when I came back the page was destroyed and ████  seemed upset. I'm sorry, I don't understand what I did wrong. She left to go somewhere in the woods, she didn't tell me where she was going but I'm a little worried, I know she cant get hurt but I wish she would tell me what made her so upset. 

Feelings are hard to understand.

Ly eventually came back, she seemed better and when i asked her what i did she just said it's best to not keep anything about her around to keep me safe. I don't understand what she meant but I trust her.

I just wish she would tell me why she needs to be secret.

So in a previous ask they just asked if you were a big video game guy and your response was that you sadly didn’t have enough time. Well my question is just asking why you think video games are frivolous, yet reading and consuming the arts aren’t?

Some video games are made for purely entertainment or profit yes. There are many books, films, and paintings like that too. There are just as many video games that are made as statements for political, social, and ethical issues. As well as games made to try to capture the feelings of grief, joy, or anything else. Just as other art forms.

This isn’t a judgement nor an attack on you I just want to know. Why are video games lesser?

no this is a really thought provoking question! it made me reconsider how i think about this a little. it's probably wrong to paint games as "pure leisure" without cultural enrichment, because it's simply not true for a lot of games.

i guess in my mind on the hierarchy of art/media that can enrich me, video games just sit pretty low. this is for a few reasons -- the time investment is a BIG factor. i can watch a movie in 1-2 hours, read an average novel in 3-5 sittings, watch a tv show for 30-50 minutes at a time at my discretion, but completing a game can take dozens of hours, especially games that are probably the most through-provoking and would benefit you culturally the same way a book or a film might (see metal gear or disco elysium versus a game like pokemon or animal crossing)

there's also accounting for HOW invested i have to be relative to time. a movie needs my full focus for me to fully digest it, but that also only takes a couple hours. a book i can read while i'm traveling/doing another task, and same for television shows, music and podcasts. when i was a gamer, it was predominantly handheld partly bc i could more easily integrate it into my life. sadly, catering to handheld gaming has dissipated a lot and the steam deck is VERY expensive. i have a switch, but i used to pay 30 dollars for a DS game versus 60 for a new switch title of the same playtime, and my switch often struggles to let me play without wifi for some reason, which isnt readily available in most places, and especially not on the subway.

plus while i do think games can really open your mind in the same way other art forms do, i do feel like for a lot of them it is mostly a leisure activity. if i spend two hours playing mario sunshine and two hours watching a hitchcock movie, i'll probably feel like the latter benefitted my cultural diet more, even if i have more fun doing the former. and honestly at the root of all this is NOT the fact that i'm "right" about this -- in fact, i think this is a deeply capitalist brainwashed mindset that makes me feel like everything i do has to be productive within the capitalist framework.

but i think this is partially bc i spent a LOT of early adulthood not doing much, including playing a lot of video games. so i think i'm in a phase right now where i'm trying to compensate by acting like this. probably the only "pure leisure" activity i don't feel a lot of guilt for is hanging with my friends, bc my personal connections are most important to me. it's frustrating! but it's something i'll need to work on with time.

PSA: rechargeable batteries

Sitting here marvelling at the fact I’ve had my little Zenith radio playing at low volume, continuously, for well over a week, on six of Panasonic’s Eneloop rechargeable “AA”s.  I leave this 1963 Zenith Royal 755LK Deluxe on continuously, at low volume, on my nightstand.  Before I got it, someone replaced the original “six C cell” battery holder with a six AA holder. After over three years of using and recharging, I have to say these batteries continue to amaze me.

This is the last working Zenith I am allowing myself to keep.  It’s an amazing sounding radio, and can blast if you want it to.  Leather case, hand stitched.  Chromed metal grille.  Made in 1963, it’s a testament to how things were made. 

It plays tuned to my home transmitter, at 1340AM, whatever I’ve decided to put on “repeat” for the night, usually something by Brian Eno, either the first side of Discrete Music, or the two albums with Harold Budd.  Other times some old-fashioned “hearts of space” type music, like Marcy Hamm’s “Z”.  Depends on my mood and what I’ve had to deal with.  lulz.

Point of Post, old man...get! to! the! point!

I have to applaud Panasonic for the whole Eneloop concept.  Gone are the days of buying AA, C, and D...you just have AA now, and SLEEVES they slip into, or that enclose them, which take the space of the old C and D batteries. Genius system, if the AAs have as much juice/power as the Ds and Cs, and well, YES...YES THEY DO!

So:  some of the old big Zenith Trans Oceanics used a total of ten D cells to run.  It played for months on end without having to buy more, but it WEIGHED another ten pounds when the batteries were all installed. 

These Eneloop things charge in 5 hours with an old “energizer” wallwart charger I bought years ago.  But one charge lasts and lasts, and they can be charged thousands of times, before they show wear.

So if you gotta use batteries, use Eneloops.  The idea of being able to eliminate literally dead weight in old fashioned D cells, your radio just got lighter, your big flashlight just got lighter. 

Initial investment is not all that big a layout of cash, considering how long they last, and how well they work.  I literally counted up how many batteries I use regularly, and only bought as many of the AAs and AAAs as necessary.  I was prepared to be disappointed, but they work too well for that!  And this is coming from a guy who has to scrape for every penny to exist.

If you need AAA, you do have to buy the AAA versions, of course, because they are so much smaller than the AA, and no adapters for those.

Speaking as a generally broke person, for who many times there is no money to even think about for things like batteries, especially when they are needed most, so I research any and everything before I lay out money at all now, and when I’m pleasantly surprised by something, I feel it my civic duty to tell other broke people (and those not so broke) about it.

Right now, things are tighter than tight.   But if my flashlight goes out tonight, I know I don’t have to dig through the change jar to buy batteries.  If you have something that uses batteries that you HAVE to use, to lay out $$ for batteries regularly, these Eneloops are the best rechargeables I’ve ever had. 

The original four AAs I bought as a test over three years ago are in this radio now.  Still going strong.  I know that in these past three years I would have had to spend more money than the initial layout to get these.

Midnight Gaming: Working Man Roguelikes

So last night I played both Immortal Redneck and Ziggurat past midnight, checked socials later to find....nothing notable to talk about it, though the countdown for the new nintendo direct is up as I write this so maybe I'll talk about something there after.

Ok directs over lets talk now.

Balatro has a crossover with several properties such as witcher, dave the diver, vampire survivors and amogus. Power wash simulator has a shrek crossover where you clean shreks swamp. Star overdrive looked to be cool with you travelling across a planet on a hoverboard. Goat simulator 3 on switch looks choppy and terrible. Stalker trilogy is coming to switch... why. I know these games came to console last year I think but these games are kinda janky on pc, not sure how they ran on xbox or ps5, can assume it'll run like DOGSHIT on switch, should be fun. FGC is eating good since Capcom Fighting Collection 2 is announced and it'll have POWER STONE 1 AND 2 INCLUDED! Never really played those games but i've heard a ton from people who were pining for that series to come back, so thats cool. DS Castlevanias are coming to switch in Dominus collection very cool. Mysims is back in cozy bundle that has the first game and kingdoms included. I enjoyed them for what they were on wii, an attempt to do a chibi sims game. So thats cool. Yakuza Kiwami is ported to switch, thats crazy and weird. Last yakuza game on Nintendo console was the 1 + 2 hd remaster on Wii U and it sold ass, so sega never bothered with yakuza on nintendo for a while. Why they decide to bring Kiwami 1 which is considered questionable in quality for some people and not port zero instead is beyond me.

Ok thats done, lets cover roguelikes

So I decided to a double feature of two games for this post today, talking about a couple of roguelike fps games that I liked. Some folks do reckon that roguelikes are a bit too common nowadays. In fairness, I can see how it may feel like a cheap way to stretch content in a sort of "play it again, it'll be different woooo" vibe but there are cases of games that utilise the randomness well and actually have a compelling base for a game that a roguelike approach adds to. Take Enter the Gungeon and Streets of Rogue for example. Here I'm gonna talk about two Roguelike fps games I played last night.

Immortal Redneck has you playing as a redneck who drove into Egypt and died. And then he became a mummy. So you have three pyramids you need to go in and clear out, each having some bosses you gotta fight and they are scripted bosses so once you figure them out, you can beat them easy. Progress works kinda like Rogue Legacy where you need to spend on passive upgrades and unlocks before you enter as you'll lose all your gold starting each run to prevent you from just banking it.

IR's combat loop of exploring the map and dealing with enemies is nice. The guns do feel punchy though there are some guns that feel more practical and some that feel more gimmicky such as the infinite ammo ankh that doesnt do a whole lot of damage but is infinite which can be helpful if you run out. You get ammo back when enemies drop a blue box or from a chest and there have been a couple times were I was low on ammo so discretion with your aim is important to keep in mind.

You can choose a god from your sarcophagus in the main hub which gives you some different stats, a starting weapon loadout and a power that recharges overtime such as a grappling hook, a decoy or a power that can turn dropped gold into healing items. You can even choose the redneck himself and he has dynamite bundles and an infinite ammo power. Like the game enough, I say give it a go when you find it on sale.

So Ziggurat is another Roguelike with you as a student wizard needing to clear a challenge to graduate. You have 4 magic groups that you can only carry 1 for each, your starting wand which recharges, spells, staffs and an alchemical weapon. Progress in Ziggurat is 5 levels to go through with unlocks tied to score so regardless if you win or die, you'll eventually unlock every perk, character and weapon in the game for the random table to choose from. Another thing to note is that theres multiple endings depending on difficulty and how thorough you go through so if you find the portal key and go straight to the boss then you'll end up with a worse ending.

Speaking of bosses, while IR had scripted bosses, Ziggurat has random bosses which honestly seem more like souped up big versions of the regular enemies that usually tend to spawn in those regular enemies during the battle. The exception is the end boss Cephaus who is the same in every run. You can choose from several characters to start a run with, each having different stats and starting perks such as a vampire that loses health slowly but gains it back from enemies, a cleric who has healing abilities and can't get divine punishment from offering to gods but more enemies spawn for them and etc.

Rooms in Immortal Redneck had some verticality so you do need to platform at times to get to enemies while Ziggurats rooms are mostly flat. Another to note is that each level has a hidden room with a free perk inside that you can find by looking for a cracked wall. Once you notice how all the rooms are layed out in a level, it become trivial to know where to look. Just know that all the rooms are connected via a grid and any spot where a door is likely to be placed will likely have a cracked wall. During your run you'll need to grab knowledge stones dropped from enemies in order to level up so you can select a perk but since they can despawn, you'll often need to run in and grab them during combat.

I liked Ziggurat enough for the variety in the perks and weapons you can get even while the levels are all rather samey. Theres a sequel already out that I should one day try out to see what they've done for that. Another game worth checking out when its on sale.
