“Wake had to escape. Write his escape. He was already out. He wanted to make it true. Wake needed a hero. A hero needed a crisis.” — Alan Wake (Control)

Thinking about the change in designs and aesthetic in Firebreak and how that plays into what we learn in the Lakehouse DLC.
Tumblr media
Its revealed very early on in the Lakehouse that, as of September 2023, the Oldest House is still in full lockdown.
Now, Remedy games in the combined universe follow the real flow of time. Alan Wake is set in 2010 when it released, Control in 2019, and AW2 in 2023.
We can assume that means Firebreak will mostly likely be set in 2025 as it releases.
That means Jesse, Simon, Emily and the rest of the FBC have been trapped in the Oldest House for 6 years by Firebreak.
6 years fighting the Hiss and whatever other paranatural entities find thier way into the headquarters.
The Firebreak characters have a very distinct depature in thier designs compared to the FBC in Control. Gone are the clean-cut lines of the Security uniforms or the well maitained threshold gear of the rangers.
They've been fighting a war of attrition for 6 years. The Hiss are a potentially limitless enemy. They target HRAs, they turn anyone they can. FBC resources have to be getting thin.
There's no knowing what the Oldest House can and can't provide. The Firebreak team wear cobbled together suits and wield jury-rigged weapons because they have to. I think we're seeing a desperate FBC making a last big push against the Hiss while they still can.

Despite its limited use case, I think the crystal stretching power is one of my favourites, it just feels so good!

for a character that never appears in person in the game, dr Ash sure manages to make an impression. he's voiced by a voice actor with only this one listed role and he knocked it out of the park, truly ate and left no crumbs. the remedy writers for the notes we find scattered around had a field day sharing all that research. nearly every line that comes out of this character goes so hard it feels illegal. he made the fast travel system. went caveman. questioned legitimacy of powerful beings beyond our comprehension. based.

Standing on their base, triangles signify stability and strength. Inverted, on their points, they represent conflict and stagnation. Of course, the orientation is just a matter of perspective. Looking at the pyramid from below gives you one, from above, another. Northmoor says he looks up at the inverted pyramid. I have to wonder: is anyone standing over it, looking down?

Predict with Dylan Faden, and another character of your choice~
Dylan Faden sees more than he wishes and knows less than he'd like.
He sees things that make him feel sick. Like nightmares you barely remember, clinging to you throughout the day. He doesn't dare call them premonitions. Predictions. Visions. Like keeping them nameless will keep them from meaning anything.
He knows so little. Random thoughts jog his memory, tether him back to events, answer questions in the confusions. The fog is horrible and listless. Time may as well not exist. Seconds feel like hours. Like days. Head hurting, nausea stirring, fear grabbing at his heart. It could be forever. The knowing makes the terror clearer. Makes him face responsibility.
He's... asleep somewhere. He knows that.
Not asleep. Sleep would be better.
But he's also here. In the myriad. In the noise.
He can't let it get him.
Flashes of the past (or the future) slide behind his eyes and through his mind.
He can't let himself...
He stays in the cell. It's safer here. For everyone. Nothing gets in, nothing gets out.
He should do something. Try to fix something. But he'd only...
Where he is changes. His body never really leaves, but he moves. Memories of the Astral Plane come to his memory in bright flashes. Mental spaces you could occupy, navigate, interact with.
Its hard to keep track of. Dream logic only makes sense while dreaming-- the changing locations, the different people, the new goals. The new dangers.
When he had dreams before, he'd draw them. It was easier to remember the things he saw.
If he'd known... if he'd known. He would've never tried to remember them in the first place. He'd try to stop them.
But what can he do, anyway?

I think this was like, my fourth time going against Hartman, so I decided to mess around and get some screenshots! Died a lot, but it was worth it!
Hate this man, nothing in Alan Wake 2 came even close to freaking me out like he does. Running out of energy in the darkness so you can no longer dash, knowing he can just appear beside you at any moment if you don't get to the light quick enough??? The sound of his voice, those brief moment where he actually sounds kind of human??? The sound of his just, bone-foot, when he walks????
Hartman was stretched, and oh I hate it...
