Reecome of the Ginyu Force is a goofy, stereotypical big dumb jock type, so it's easy to underestimate how serious of an opponent he'll be. But as it turns out, he is one of the most vicious and powerful foes anyone in the series had faced up to that point. Vegeta's previous loss to a villain in Freeza's employ was due to being caught off guard on how to deal with a sudden transformation, but here he has no such excuse. He just gets pulverized, plain and simple. Krillin is taken out with one hit, leaving Gohan to stand alone against this monster. It's as heart-wrenching as it is inspiring to see the child keep getting back up and pushing himself to his limits to fight Recoome, and that is probably what really makes this battle special. That and its ending, where Goku arrives and takes down Recoome with one hit just as he's preparing to launch his ultimate attack. It's a surprising yet also hilarious way to cap it off.

my first fic published was a kenshin, pokemon, yugioh, dbz... et cetera crossover fic. the main character was a self-insert and they ("she") definitely went more christ than faust, haha.

lots of dead dove, lots of abusive incest. I think it was a way of subconsciously expressing my own abuse (physical and emotional) in a way "serious" enough to be believed.

I started it in year 2001, when I was 10, so it's rough, but I could stand to read it as a time capsule of who I was.

3. I think my best fic thus far is is it wrong to pickup girls on a pirate ship, continued. It picks up from what was a funny, romantic, action packed rewrite of OFMD s2 and really digs into the themes of community, love without trust, and how to do right by everyone when harm has been done.

Possession was a very close second, although it's a very different fic.

So inspired by my buddy @angrypedestrian, I kept a log of every piece of media I consumed this year. Why? I read/watch so much, it can be hard to remember everything sometime, and I’m obsessive about that sort of thing. Plus, it’s fun!

In general, I tried to keep track of every single thing, but there were exceptions. In TV, I really only kept track of things I chose to watch -- so, I ignored the shows my parents will randomly have on TV while we eat dinner, etc. I also missed a decent amount of the shows I watched while I was home recuperating from my surgery, because, y’know, I’d just have the TV on for the sake of having the TV on, and only paying half attention. For most categories on this list I kept track of rewatches and rereads, but the exception is music, because I listen to way too much. Instead I only kept track of new releases and/or releases I listened to for the first time this year.

The results?:

I watched at least 3 episodes of 33 different series this year. I rewatched 6 full seasons of television I had seen before, and for 31 new (or new to me) releases I watched either the complete season, or every episode of the season released this year. In total I watched 470 episodes of television.

I read 13 novels, all new to me. This year was a bit of a departure for me, as six of these were non-fiction memoirs.

I read 28 graphic novels. 14 were rereads, 14 were new to me.

I read 37 new chapters of manga.

I read every issue released of 61 different ongoing comic book series, and also reread 50 issues of The Wicked + The Divine. Altogether I read 388 individual comic books this year.

I listened to 33 new album/releases from 2019, and 24 albums/releases from other years that were new to me, for a total of 57 total new-to-me albums.

I went to the movie theater 27 times this year. Between theaters, DVD, and streaming, I saw 26 of 2019′s new releases, saw 14 movies from other years for the first time, and rewatched 21 movies I’d seen before, for a total of 61 movies watched.

I listened to at least ten episodes of 4 different podcasts. I listened to 118 podcast episodes in total.

I watched one webseries in total (all 60 episodes of DBZ abridged)

I saw 1 play in the theaters.

I bought 1 new video game and replayed 1 video game I’d beaten before.

My conclusion? I waste too much time, but boy did I have a good time.

Unpopular(?) Opinion Re:Dragon Ball

The Android / Cell Saga is the best story arc in Dragon Ball Z, if not all of Dragon Ball.

Having been revisiting the series lately due to Akira Toriyama's shocking and untimely death, and comparing the story arcs of DBZ in their manga, original anime and Kai forms, I feel like despite the Saiyan / Vegeta and Namek / Freeza Sagas being far more iconic worldwide, it's the Android / Cell Saga that came out best in all incarnations. First off, there's the pacing:

Saiyan / Vegeta: 48 Chapters Namek / Freeza: 87 Chapters Android / Cell: 91 Chapters

Saiyan / Vegeta: 35 Episodes Namek / Freeza: 72 Episodes Android / Cell: 77 Episodes

Saiyan / Vegeta: 16 Episodes Namek / Freeza: 38 Episodes Android / Cell: 44 Episodes

In all versions, this is the longest arc, and yet it's paced much better than the previous two.

The Saiyan / Vegeta Saga spent 30 of its 48 manga chapters dealing with Nappa and Vegeta on Earth; Raditz lasted just 10 and then only 8 were spent in preparation for Nappa and Vegeta's arrival. The original anime gave Raditz 5 episodes, 16 episodes for preparation, and 14 episodes for the big battle. For the former, it felt like the middle portion ran far too short which caused the end to drag on, whereas in the latter it's the reverse: the middle lasted far longer than it needed to as several episodes were spent on filler bullshit like a bug planet, a second Oozaru transformation for Gohan, fighting phony Saiyans inside a simulation room, or a backstory for the Saiyans and the destruction of their planet that ends up at complete odds with actual canon. Only Kai got it down right, with the first half (Raditz + preparation) and the second half (Nappa and Vegeta) both lasting 8 episodes, making it the ideal version.

The Namek / Freeza Saga has 27 chapters at the beginning where everyone goes to Namek and hunts for the Dragon Balls, 22 chapters at the middle where the Ginyu Force is the focal point, and finally 38 chapters at the end where we get the battle with Freeza. So yeah, the end section dragged on longer than it probably needed to. The anime is much worse: 23 episodes beginning, 16 episodes middle, and 33 episodes end, with a fair amount in each section being pure filler such as Fake Namek, zany Bulma shenanigans, or diversion after diversion during Goku's fight with Freeza. Once again, Kai is the most preferable version, as it again combines the beginning and middle into a first half and the end into a second half, both lasting 19 episodes, dividing the arc into pre-Porunga and post-Porunga sections.

Then we have the Android / Cell Saga. 30 chapters at the beginning where Dr. Gero and his androids are the central threat, 30 chapters at the middle where Cell emerges as the true villain and goes through his transformations, and 31 chapters at the end centered around the Cell Games....and the last of those two can essentially be considered one elongated epilogue chapter starring Future Trunks, meaning it's more like 30/30/30. The original anime's equivalent is 23 episodes, 25 episodes, and 29 episodes respectively - it's almost perfect, with the only flaw being the end section needlessly being dragged out by two episodes more than is needed (one where Hercule and two anime-exclusive students of his hog the spotlight even when the ultimate outcome of their antics is obvious and one where Cell inexplicably spends the entire length charging up his final Kamehameha). Kai makes the pace perfect again, with 14 episodes at the beginning, 14 at the middle, and 16 at the end, with the last two being the wrap-up and epilogue respectively following the main action against Cell.

Beyond the pacing, there's the content. Not only does this arc hold some of the most interesting and influential ideas (the existence of alternate timelines, Dr. Gero's scientific genius, Vegeta's character development, Piccolo and Kami becoming one again, the depths of Gohan's power, etc.) and not only did Toriyama and his editors fluke their way into a remarkable degree of consistency despite nothing having been pre-planned, but almost every character gets something important to do. In the previous arcs, you could count the important heroes on one hand: Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, and the helpful comic relief (Yajirobe in the former, Bulma in the latter). They and the villains carried the arcs while everyone else were either a plot device (hi, King Kai!), sidelined, or made into cannon fodder. But here, in addition to now also having Vegeta and Future Trunks among the heroes, you get important and useful roles for not just those aforementioned characters but also Tien, Yamcha, Roshi, Dr. Brief, Kami, Dende, and even newcomer Hercule (poor Chi Chi and Chiaotzu, though).

And while the villains collectively don't quite measure up to the Freeza Empire in iconic status, they are still superbly designed and characterized, making them highly memorable. Cell himself has got to be the standout, being as good if not better a foe than Freeza. Let's just put it this way: once Goku went Super Saiyan, Freeza was done for, and his destructive tantrum that blew up Namek ultimately claimed no victims. With Cell, it looks like things are going the same way once Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2, but then his destructive tantrum that risks blowing up Earth actually does come at the cost of Goku's life! And then, Cell comes back, now as powerful as Super Saiyan 2 Gohan as he insta-kills Trunks, curb-stomps Vegeta, and breaks Gohan's arm before preparing to blow up Earth again, this time at no cost to himself! This was hands-down the biggest "Oh my God; holy shit; Game Over, man; there's no way out of this" situation in all of Dragon Ball, making the ensuing Kamehameha beam struggle where Gohan is guided by Goku's spirit all the more epic and satisfying. The anime and Kai made it even better, allowing Piccolo, Krillin, Tien and Yamcha to keep on trying to help against Cell despite how futile it was, inspiring a despondent Vegeta to get back into the fray and providing his crucial assist blast. It takes all of the Z-Fighters to save the world.

So that's my take. This story arc is just....well, perfect.

The Toonami Trending Rundown for March 31-April 1, 2018. For the first time since the 2012 revival, Toonami was center stage on Adult Swim’s infamous April Fools pranks. Many of those who watched Toonami back on that night will agree that it was a magical night and was a sign of good things to come for anime, as the block would see its eventual revival, leading to where we are today. So what would Toonami do for an encore to that memorable night 6 years ago? We’ll, following the regular scheduled programs of Dragon Ball Super, DBZ Kai, and Black Clover, on the stroke of midnight, they did something many thought they would do when pigs fly and hell froze over…air subtitled anime.

And for 6 hours, they did, as Toonami showcased a surprise premiere of the first episode of FLCL 3 Alternative. This was followed by a presentation of the 2004 cult hit film Mind Game, directed by Masaaki Yuasa, whom previously directed the Kickstarter funded short Kick-Heart, which aired on Toonami in 2013, and more recently the Netflix hit Devilman Crybaby. And the block finished off with airing subtitled versions of every program originally scheduled for the night (including the start of Naruto’s Five Kage summit) with the exception of Gundam IBO, which didn’t join the fun due to rights issues to air the sub here, among other things.

Hell, they even took the joke as far as having TOM and SARA speak in Japanese, with Masa Kanome and Fusako Shiotani taking on the roles respectively. According to Jason DeMarco, the entire idea of airing subbed anime for April Fools came from the idea of Adult Swim head Mike Lazzo, and the Toonami crew agreed that it would be fun and unexpected for viewers. Although it’s very unlikely subtitled material will ever air on Toonami again, and it could be awhile before the pendulum swings in favor of movies being more practical for Toonami to air more frequently again, as we’ve seen time and again, if Toonami has taught us anything, it’s that we should never give up and nothing is impossible, and as this night shown us, anything can happen.

On Twitter, Toonami would trend along with DBZ Kai, FLCL (Including FLCL Alternative), Adult Swim, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Hunter x Hunter. On Tumblr, Toonami would trend alongside Dragon Ball Super and FLCL.

This week’s feature was a game review of NieR:Automata for the PS4 and PC. It received a 9 out of 10 score.

Toonami also showcased another new trailer for the upcoming seasons of FLCL, which you can see below.

Those that have been keeping up with simulcasts may know that the new season of anime titles have been making their debuts this week, some of which we may see on the better cartoon show down the line. Three previous Toonami-aired shows are of special mention, as they begin the next chapters to their respective franchises with Lupin the Third Part V, Sword Art Online: Alternative Gun Gale Online, and Tokyo Ghoul:re. Could we see them down the line on the better cartoon show? I personally believe we’ll see them sooner or later, but all I can say is if that if you want to see these franchises return or if you see a new show that you would recommend, send your show requests to Toonami’s Facebook and Tumblr message boxes as well as letting the respective distributors know on their respective outlets, and we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, for those wanting to see the subtitled simulcasts of these 3 potential shows, Lupin Part V and Alternative GGO will be available on Crunchyroll and Hulu beginning on Tuesday and Saturday respectively, while TG:re will be simulcasted on Funimation Now and Hulu beginning on Tuesday.

In terms of shows we’ll be seeing in the near future, due to various reasons, Toonami has been pretty silent recently when it comes to show announcements, including the mystery show that was supposed to replace Lupin still unannounced, leading to people pushing the panic button to say the least. Jason DeMarco however, doesn’t seem so worried, mentioning that “The block is doing great! The next two shows we have coming are something I think will surprise people!”

Next week, Toonami will begin a transitional period of sorts for FLCL’s revival as well as other new shows in the works, as FLCL will have an encore run beginning on April 14 at 11:30pm EDT. However, with season 2 still just 8 weeks away, and FLCL 1 only having 6 episodes plus the Memorial Day weekend break prior to Progressive’s debut, Toonami will showcase an encore viewing of Countdown and Scavengers on the timeslot.

Unfortunately for Black Clover fans, to make way for this transition, the show will have to be moved to 1 am Eastern for the foreseeable future. Black Clover haters are probably salivating to the schedule programmers for listening to their complaints, but that’s probably not the reason it was moved (more likely since JoJo’s and Gundam IBO’s respective seasons are ending sooner, they probably didn’t want to mess with the schedule too much, not to mention fans want new shows premiered as early as possible to attract new viewers, so long running shows tend to be pushed later to make way, something which Hunter x Hunter and Naruto had to deal with) and regardless if I were them, I wouldn’t celebrate too much. The show is overall still here until next year, and it’s not like My Hero Academia or Made in Abyss are coming anytime soon.

Of course, for those that decided to tune out early or want to rewatch the shows dubbed, Toonami will return to the regular schedule next week (including said above changes) with all the episodes that were apart of the April Fools Joke (with the exception of FLCL Alternative which will be shown in September and Mind Game as no dub is presently available) shown again in their English dubs.

So, I hate to be That Guy™, but when are you gonna drop the chapters of Luffa you did during January?

No worries, Dear Reader. If craving my fanfic makes you That Guy™, then the world could use a few more That Guys™. Sometimes I kind of lose sight of the audience, so I appreciate you taking the time to ask.

First, let me do a little self-promotion. For those of you who need a link, Luffa #1-182 is up on AO3. For those johnny-come-lately types who aren't keen on starting from the very beginning, Chapter 142 makes a pretty good jumping-on point, as it begins the section of the story that has all the DBZ characters in it.

But to answer your question, I had some trouble with Chapter 183, and it needs some polish before I'll be ready to post it. Similarly, there's chunks of, like, 188-ish that aren't finished yet. I can't offer a timetable, because I don't know how long it'll take me to get them ready.

Just to explain my process a little bit, I've been doing these Nanowrimo.com goals to get the words out, but the emphasis is on quantity, not quality. When it's over, I have to go back and edit, but I've learned that its a lot easier when I wait a while first. I really didn't like the way #183 looked at the time, but I'm sure it won't seem nearly as bad now, as opposed to ten days ago. And that'll make it easier to deal with.

My plan is to have all this stuff up by March 31, because I'm doing another Nano month in April, and this stuff always goes smoother when I clear out the old business. I'd rather have it done by the end of February, but I promised myself I wouldn't rush it. My true goal for the year is to get the fic up to one million words, and I'm well on-track for that.

But like I said, I sometimes get so wrapped up in writing this thing that I forget that there's actual people reading it, and I don't want to leave you hanging. And now that I'm talking about Chapter 183, I feel more interested in getting back at it. So we'll see.

1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean.

This name is super not creative at all, I mean it. I made it 2002 to make may username more... acceptable, I guess. I was young and thought it was a good idea. Anyway, red is my favorite color, and crimsonriley seemed a lot better than redriley. Riley being one of my names. 

2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/favorites, follows/subscriptions, visitor hits, kudos)

The Night of No Regrets has the most views and reviews.

Troublesome and Inconclusive has the most favorites and follows.

I don’t use one on FFN. My profile icon here is a pic I took in New Orleans. The trip holds some pretty special memories. The fireworks were really pretty.

I do not. As I update so infrequently for ... various reasons. I’m not at all surprised by this.

I read The Way of the Wind by Just Enough pretty much every other month. I love the Itachi in this. They did such an amazing job. It’s perfect.

I don’t post a lot of things because I struggle with writing. I use it as a distraction or an outlet for processing things. I will admit I’m not the best at my hobby. So I continue and practice but it’s mostly for me, anyway.

10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.

I think I can be better at everything. Specifically, I have trouble setting the scene with words. I can do some great dialog, but helping the reader get the full picture of the mood, emotions, even scenery is really hard for me. 

11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?

I’m trying two write a couple rarepairs right now, ShikaSaku and Shisaku.

The Shisaku is going much better than the other.

If I get an email from ffn saying someone added one of my stories as a favorite or is following it. I cringe. Literally, I cringe because most of the stuff I wrote was completed when I was really young. It’s cliche and contrite, and it makes me cringe. Still, I do appreciate that someone likes it, I really do.

19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?

My love of fanfiction all started with DBZ. Jadedbest really inspired me to try my hand at it.

20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?

Plot the story first. How do you want it to start? How does it end? What builds the story? What acts as a catalyst? Where will the characters stuggle? Have these ideas in mind. They can be fluid and change as the story develops, but having idea of where I want to go helps me stay on track to actually get there.

21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?

Please see above. I try to do this. I often fail.

22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?

Because they are so few, I just went to read all of my reviews to see. LOL

I actually haven’t received any bad feedback. However, if I ever do, I plan on trying to see the merits of it but at the same time remaining true to where I want my story to go. 

23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)

I have a really hard time writing conflict, especially if there is actual physical violence to describe. I’m so non-confrontational as a person it transfers over to my writing abilities.

24. What story(s) are you working on now?

25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?

I am currently working on a new story for the first time in months. I have lost all inspiration and motivation for all my others. So, as I am absolute trash about completing stories I plan to complete this one entirely before sharing any of it.

My goal is currently set at writing at least one new paragraph a day.

I mean, I hope so. As I mentioned before the old ones are rough and make me cringe.

I have this HP story where I killed off Ron Weasley. It was really satisfying to write because I really don’t like the character at all. Worst best friend ever. I mean he may have come around in the end, but books 1- 6... please.

The Night of No Regrets. It’s really immature. It’s really contrite. And for the love of all that’s sacred there’s even a song fic chapter in there. Ugh... teenage me...

I mean I write all of these really professional reports ever single day. For business purposes, I’ve been told I’m really stellar. My problem is I like to use a lot of words. So now that everyone expects all the information to be received in tweet sized format it makes things much harder. But I will continue to attempt to condense 210 pages of material into 280 characters. *Groans*

As a fanfiction author, I’m trying to pick it back up and have fun with it. I’m not sure if that will still be the case 5 years from now or not.

31. What is the easiest thing about writing?

I think I’m pretty good at keep the character’s I borrow pretty true to their cannon personalities.

Knowing whether it’s important for the reader to know exactly how blue the sky is or to know to a bird was chirping close by.
