Do anyone else kin a character too much to the point that their fears become your fears?

I'm asking this because growing up when I had a hyperfixation of Sonic the Hedgehog, I kinned him so much that his fear of water worsened my fear of water. But I noticed that my fear of water became less ever since I no longer kinned myself to him and I no longer have a hyperfixation of him.

However, my current special interest is Dragon Ball Z and I kin myself to Goku so damn badly. Goku has a fear of needles and because of me kinning myself to him, my fear of needles had worsened.

I remember the time I had gotten my first COVID vaccine shot that I was trying to act so tough but secretly I was panicking on the inside and I never reacted towards a needle like that before till I started to get so interested in Dragon Ball Z more than usual. Yes I have gotten my second vaccine shot, but the thought of having to take another shot frightens me so bad.

So is this an autistic thing or?

I love how oblivious Gohan is, similar to his father. It makes them so relatable when it's something you may struggle with too. A one or two special interests and everything else is eh, but they know how to address or acknowledge it if communicated or said properly.

They don't want to know that Goku and Vegeta are in love with each other, and dbz/dbs is actually their love story. They fear the fact that their favorite anime about buff dudes that punch each other really hard is actually about two neurodivergent gay aliens punching each other really hard.

So I just talk about it with my bestie and myself.

alright I have a fandom hot take to get off my chest. It rubs me the wrong way a bit when I see people refer to Vegeta as Bulma’s (or occasionally Goku’s) pet. Honestly I’ve made the joke myself and I usually don’t mind it, but I feel a bit guilty/weird about it, and it’s taken me months to work out why. I think first there’s an in-universe reason. Vegeta’s actual backstory is that he was functionally Freeza’s pet for about three decades. And I don’t really want to compare his relationship with Bulma or Goku to his relationship with Freeza in a way that makes it sound like he just changed ownership. I’m pretty sure part of the reason the joke is so common is that Vegeta does call his own redemption(ish) arc “being domesticated.” (At least in English, I’m not worrying about the Japanese original today) It’s absolutely funny that he thinks of it that way, but I also think that Vegeta’s opinion can’t be trusted on anything, especially himself. It’s one of the more interesting parts of the character to me that he doesn’t quite think of himself as a person (a topic worth its own meta). He’s also got the aforementioned history of being dehumanized. Combining that with his internalized idea that the only valuable trait is strength and being kind or merciful or caring is just weakness, it makes sense that he might decide to label his character development as “domestication,” even though that’s not really a good description of learning to find contentment in peace and care for others. So part of why that line is funny is the irony, even if there is some truth to it. Taking it at face value and using it as a joke on its own without the irony sort of feels like it misses the point for me.

Then there’s the half that I feel sort of guilty posting because I know it’s not the intent behind the jokes and it feels like I’m getting upset over something trivial and saying this feels accusatory, but I’m getting my hot take out of my system once and for all regardless. I feel like I see people say Vegeta is a pet either because he doesn’t have a job and he’s just living off Bulma’s money, or because he’s really weird sometimes. And I really don’t like the implications of either of those. Again, I am aware it’s a joke, I know that I’m not supposed to be taking it literally, but. Not working a job sure as hell doesn’t make someone less than human. Being financially supported by someone else does not make someone a pet, that’s spectacularly fucked up. And behaving strangely, even in an animalistic way, also does not make someone less than human or someone else’s pet. (and for the record I can’t actually think of much Vegeta has done that’s animalistic in canon, the closest to that has been eating the bug person, and he did that in a pretty human way. He cooked that bug person first and everything lol. Vegeta being cruel is not animalistic, it’s just a negative character trait. Most animals aren’t even aware enough to be cruel, so it’s a pretty human negative trait at that. I know it’s popular fanon to make him more animalistic but it is fanon. That’s probably a really hot take too but whatever.) Actually this goes for jokes about Goku too, who is the one who actually has some “animalistic” traits in canon. I hate the implication that the way either of them acts would make them the “pet” of a more “normal” human character. It feels really gross. Especially because they read far more as neurodivergent and/or having trauma then they do as true aliens. Part of that is an inherent side product of writing aliens as a human, because you can only really use things that humans are familiar with. But there’s also a whole history of which human traits get used to make an alien seem “inhuman.” I’m only personally familiar with the autism part of that history, but I know there’s lot more than that. Regardless, it certainly has an effect if you have those “inhuman” traits that people say are what makes an alien or robot or whatever into something less than human. So uh, “Vegeta is Bulma’s pet because he’s blunt, aggressive, often confused by other people’s intentions, and doesn’t always understand Earth” does not feel great as a joke. I know it’s not that serious and I know that’s not the underlying intention and I know that caring about this character in particular really does not help my case. But I guess I just can’t quite escape my feelings about it anyway.

I think something that I like about Goku and why I defend Goku's increasing societal detachment so much is that I think it's something I witness a lot in both myself and other creatives, especially in professional fields.

I'm a professional story artist, I've wanted to work in comics and animation for as long as I've been alive, and that has made me very Strange in terms of what people in non-creative fields think I should want/like/be interested in my age (at any age). I remember in my 20s I was talking to my niece about a show she was into, that I really liked as well, and she told me she liked talking to me because I was like a big kid (HIGH compliment from a 10 year old). Her hype is not shared by the elders aklsdaj

My older family members think that it's really weird that I care about cartoons and comics and animated film as much as I do, and have joked that they hope it pans out so I never have to get a "real" job. The fact that I am aroace and have no interest in dating, marrying, or having children also lends itself to the idea that I'm somehow naive and childish. But the fact is, I'm a perfectly capable, independent adult happily living on my own, and my applied skillset in my field is pretty damn good.

Everyone around me in non-creative spaces keeps expecting I'll grow up eventually. But this is me grown up. I'm still learning and growing, obviously, I'll be doing that for the rest of my life, but it's my choice to remain silly despite the horrors. It's my calculated decision, based on my lived experience, to work hard and pursue my passions at a level that has and will again bring me joy and success.

But it's not just me! This is a very standard experience for a creative professional, especially queer and/or neurodivergent creative professionals. Especially those of us who work in teen, youth, or children's media, and who consume media in those ratings as a result (or as an extension of things we loved as kids, and things that inspired us to pursue this path to begin with).

So, as I get more years in the field, and the more I observe that gap in worldviews, Goku's writing feels more genuine to the experience of someone in a dedicated pursuit of their passion (written by people who've built careers out of that exact experience). That's a hard thing to explain to someone who's never experienced a fanatic drive to do something they consider insane and impossible (like making art your career, for example), because someone with different priorities is never going to think that's a valuable use of your time. But you do, and so you do it (and it is -- and they don't get why you invest so much time in it but they always think the results are impressive??)!

And it does take luck. And it does take community. And you can't do it alone. But that doesn't make it any less important to put in the work and push yourself to keep being better, so that when those opportunities do line up, you're ready for them and then some.

The older I get, the more Goku feels very anecdotal and reflective to me, on both Toriyama and Toyotarou's part. Just because you've achieved great success doesn't mean your foundations aren't important. Just because you've been lucky doesn't discredit your hard work and determination. Just because you're highly skilled doesn't mean you're above making mistakes or being a team player. Just because you're not what people want or expect you to be doesn't mean you're stupid. Just because you choose kindness and joy where someone else would choose cynicism and spite doesn't mean you're childish or naïve. And being flawed doesn't make you a bad person, it just makes you a person.

It just feels very Real and Relatable, in that sense, and I like it a lot.

🎨Are you neurodivergent or disabled? Anything that uniquely affects your RPing?

I have ADHD, which affects my actual attention span! Sometimes I don't do or answer things linearly, suddenly have a drive to do something else specific, or I run off and perform a task B while I wait on a task A.

While I am disabled with rheumatoid symptoms, those are somewhat managed by my hormone replacement therapy, testosterone reduces inflammation like that; once in a blue moon I need to sleep off a workday. I also hyperfixate on some video games, though that might be offset by the inspiration that they bring me for later. It happens.

🦊 What is the ambiance like, where you are? Are there any sounds, or sights that might be distinctive?

it's cicada season, and perfect napping weather... The temperature is nice and cool, around 60-70F, and I think the crickets and frogs are joining in, too. very noisy, but not loud. Makes me really not want to wake up for work in the morning, but it's peaceful.

🐸 Something that makes you smile for fandom reasons?

My husband and I have been watching dragon ball Z kai, and it's funnier than I remember; even in the serious moments. like Krillin's milk and cookies comment, or when the androids first land. The OP is somewhat stuck in my head. Trunks is present, and I very fondly remember a childhood friend and I very gayly calling him a 'hunksicle!' at 8 years old. Goku's cool. it's a good time.

Also, watching pokerogue update as often as it does is cool!

We have these special interests for a reason. They clearly mean something to us. They clearly make us happy to the point that we can't stop thinking or talking about it.

My special interest at the moment is Dragon Ball. I grew up with the anime ever since I was a kid. I love this series to the point that I will watch YouTube videos relating to the series or play video games related to it. (Literally my profile picture is Goku Black.) And my partner had the AUDACITY to say that "Not everything is about Dragonball, Grym."

That's not what he originally meant, to be fair. He actually meant "Not everything is about Dragonball to me, Grym", which is understandable but when he said that shit, my heart felt like it dropped, I felt like I was going to cry because (even though he didn't actually mean to) he dismissed a series hold special to my heart. I told him and let him know that saying something like that can be offensive to an autistic person. I had a lot of anger pent up on me but I wasn't exactly angry at him because he probably didn't know.

Just don't insult a neurodivergent's special interest. These interests mean the world to us.

So while I was experiencing Scarlet & Violet, seeing Nemona acting like a diet yandere (We're in the same place - what a coincidence! Don't battle rando's you can have all battles you'll ever want... with me. and Will you be my rival for life? I won't stop until you say yes), I thought it was funny and thought nothing of it, until I saw the memes and it became like my favourite joke, but then I went on tumblr to search for it and it's filled with people who have a butthurt about people who call her yandere and/or stalker. And making excuses like "wtf is wrong with you guys, she's just neurodivergent" and of course ignoring whether or not yandere's are neurotypical or not, I think that's pretty stupid. First of all - it's just a bunch of harmless fun. Many people even like her, BECAUSE she's showing this kind of behaviour. Secondly, by making excuses, you basically give a pass for people to act in such fashion, because "they don't know any better"(which is kind of an ablist statement by its own merit, but I digress). Thirdly, your headcanons aren't confirmed anywhere, yet you act like it's the most obvious thing, which it isn't, even for people getting stalked irl. A lot of them also just say things like "you wouldn't call her that if she wasn't a girl, you're a mysogynist" - this one's true as if she wasn't a cute girl, a lot of people (possibly including the people making these statements), instead of making harmless memes about a cute yandere, would downright cancel pokemon for making a creepy stalker, your main rival and showing them in a positive light. I'm not by any means saying Nemona is a bad character or evil or whatever, but seeing many streamers seeing her behaviour and almost unanimously calling her creepy/yandere, basically says it was much rather intentional than not, so please just keep your headcanons to yourself and let people enjoy the games you both like in a way they like.

I don't know if the streamers are taking it seriously that she is a crazy yandere, but yeah, just let people have fun. But hey, I'm in the camp that sees Nemona as Psychoku (Psycho Goku).

Girl is definitely a Gokusister. Bitch loves fighting and I think that's pretty funny and neat. Anyone doing Nemona in DBZ is auto win. Tomboy yandere is cute, but Psycho!Nemona is better.
