Kegare, Shinto Buddhism and how it gets reflected in Japanese video game writing. (Fire Emblem and Zelda Botw/Totk centric)

Gonna blab on a very specific aspect of Japanese Shinto :D. This is not talked about often despite the sheer amount of stuff out there so here's me talking about it.

So. It often goes something like this. The Hero gets a powerful magical weapon at some point. They fight through the Big Bad's army of mooks while they may journey throughout the land. Eventually, they, or the weapon mcguffin gets powered up by a higher power, and at the climax, the Hero/es comes through to take down the evil big bad Demon King-esque malevolent monster/dragon/non-human out, thereby succeeding in saving the world.

Any of that sound familiar? It should, for anyone who has engaged with just about any Nintendo media from Mario to Fire Emblem to Breath of The Wild.

This big bad character archetype is also known as Maou, or the Demon King. 魔王 can also be translated into Sorcerer/Magic King, but the negative evilness associated with it is more apt. TvTropes even lists this as a trope (link)!

The why they are often times taken down this way though, kiiiind of lies within Shinto Buddhism. (And by extension many of other culture/religion's concept of 'ritual cleanliness', but for this post I'm ignoring them! Sorry!)

I'll switch gears a bit to culture/religious stuff and talk about Kegare under the cut.

I think everyone who has ever touched any Nintendo or Japanese related media has ran into the concept of 'kegare', or 'spiritual uncleanliness' multiple times without realizing it.

Kegare (穢れ or 汚れ) is the concept of 'spiritual dirtiness'.

Translated as 'pollution' or 'defilement', to be kegare'd is to be dirtied in some form, often times through action. Generally speaking, kegare is a negative energy typically generated upon contact with death, childbirth, disease and menstruation. But it can also come into state through particularly powerful, negative state of emotions such as hate, jealousy, guilt and anger as well. Note that Kegare isn't by itself a moral or judgemental concept, but rather a force of nature. Kegare is not sin, and therefore cannot be seen as such!

You can think of kegare as bad vibes, bad juju, or even miasma. They're very similar concepts.

With enough bad vibes (basically), a place, object, or a person can be polluted so hard that evil spirits might manifest and cause harm to both them and their surroundings. Hence why Japanese media loves depicting places with bad vibes like the hospitals to be full of yokais or ghosts looking to cause harm.

This is why characters who harbor ambitions of taking over the world are seen as Maous. It's why characters like Hegemon Husk!Edelgard, Grima, Ganon, Mr. Grizz all fit into this evil, ambitious, resentful, almost force-of-nature-like beings who brings with them death to the world. Because they aren't just bringing death with them, they're about to unleash the largest tsunami of bad vibes they can into the world too!

But, the state of kegare can be purified away. There are 2 main ways to do so. Misogi, and Harae.

Misogi (禊)

By standing under a waterfall or washing the body with water, kegare can purified. Notably though, one must be dressed in white during this ritual cleansing. This specific concept is known as Misogi, and you might have come across it in botw already:

In BoTW, Zelda attempts to purify herself in order to unlock the power of the Goddess. By visiting important spiritual places and washing herself in its water in white, she's performing Misogi.

In Fire Emblem Heroes, Naga will suggest this to Kiran, the Player Character:

But misogi isn't exactly why big bads get the holy weapon whacking treatment. If you have noticed, misogi affects only the willing individual taking part in ritual cleansing. The real reason is actually...

Harae (祓)

Harae can mean 2 things. To drive out, or, exorcise. Consenting or not, harae essentially drives out or purifies kegare in another person, place, or object through rituals.

Harae can involve ceremonies, song and dance, using a ritual cleansing tool(!) such as the onusha.

As an example of the former, Azura in Fire Emblem Fates essentially embodies the power of misogi through her association with waters and purification. Here, she tries to exorcise the evil inside of Garon. She is actually performing harae!

As an example of the latter, the cleansing tools.... Why, it should be sounding familiar now.

Be it the Falchion, Yato, Fire Emblem, Breidablik, The Creator Sword, the Master Sword, Ocarina of Time, The Twilight Bow, they all share 2 very similar traits:

Be powered up by the good juju power/light

Whack the big bad maou with it, sometimes unleashing light in the process

In this context that I'm presenting, they are all tools of purification/exorcism. Sit down and think about this. Think about all the Japanese JRPGs you've played so far and see how much this clicks.

The Hero gains a weapon/tool/relic, powers it up in some way or is inherently already powered, and then uses that to smack the big bad and win. Sometimes the tools can be the heroes themselves, but it is often the very similar song and dance (heh). Hell, you can even extend this beyond Fire Emblem and Zelda. Maybe even extend it to anime and manga, and you might find the same themes in places you don't expect.

It's kind of neat to think about. Essentially, the hero not just defeats the big bad, but kind of purifies them as well.

But! There's another reason why weapons are often the divine relics needed to deliver the finishing blow in video games, and why they are almost always associated with characters of authority.

The Imperial Regalia of Japan/ The Three Sacred Treasures

There exists 3 treasures which represents 3 primary virtues and are part of the enthronement ceremony in Japan. They have never been shown to the public to symbolize authority, so no one but the authority knows what they look like. The above image is just an artist's impression of what they might resemble. They exist, supposedly.

The Sword is known as Kusanagi no Tsurugi, the mirror as Yata no Kagami, and the jewel as Yasakani no Magatama. They represent Valour, Wisdom and Benevolence respectively. They are said to be brought into this world by Japanese gods, passed to the first emperor of Japan, Emperor Jimmu, who said to be a descendant of Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess.

Yep, this is also why Fire Emblem is always about noble blooded people with divine weapons.

Yep, these are also the original inspiration for the triforce in The Legend of Zelda.

I won't get into the details behind the Regalia's story in this post, it's too long! Linfamy has done a video about the Regalia if you're interested.

Hopefully this was interesting. Again, feel free to take the ideas here and read up on it externally. So many, many videos and posts and I've not seen people talk at all about this. Sadge.

But before I close off this post, there is a negative side to this kegare concept, in which real people are discriminated against in Japan. ...Remember the association with death for kegare? Yeah... Uhm, someone needs to take care of the dead in any society and butcher livestocks for food, so what happens to those people? ...Messed up things, actually. Transformers One Main Cast As Fate/Grand Order Characters

This movie has given me such severe brain rot, I just had to write something for it. Once again this post DOES CONTAIN MINOR SPOILERS so read at your own discretion.

Orion Pax/Optimus Prime

• This time around I imagine him being a Ruler

• Given how it is normally a class associated with saint-like characters and grail war observers, I think it fits him rather well

• Even his most reckless acts are always done with good intentions and out of the main 4 bots, I consider him to be the peace keeper

• I see him as being an Arts unit with an AOE support Noble Phantasm (provides various buffs to the party instead of dealing damage to the enemy)

• I consider The Matrix of Leadership to be a passive skill: I’m thinking it would give passive healing per turn or extra debuff resistance. Probably passive healing because it’s not something you really see in F/GO (in playable units anyway)

• I’m probably going to give him a buff somewhere that makes him and or the party deal extra damage against "Threat to Cybertron" units (more on that later)

D-16/Megatron

• Easily an Avenger class unit, no questions asked

• Once he and the rest of the group find out the truth about Sentinel, revenge is all he can think about. And by the end of the film its become his defining trait, consuming him till there's nothing left of his previous personality

• It may be a little cliche giving him an all Buster card deck, but it really does suit him well

• His physical prowess is so strong after gaining his t-cog I’m thinking of making the arm canon his Noble Phantasm, if the divorce scene is anything to go by he’s probably Single Target (that scene gave me unparalleled psychic damage, I am not ok)

• He is also one of two units I will be giving the new "Threat to Cybertron" trait, based on F/GO’s "Threat to Humanity" trait

• I imagine his kit being almost like Maou Nobu’s, except better in every way. As much as I love her, the developers really failed her with that kit.

B-127/Bumblebee

• Not quite as obvious as my last choice, but he would make a good berserker

• Very low ranking "Madness Enhancement", probably somewhere in the low C/high to mid D range. Low C seems a little high for me but the change in stats is so minute it really doesn’t matter too much

• I have a feeling he would be a Quick unit, but I can’t make up my mind on whether he is Single Target or AOE. Maybe there is a gimmick in his kit somewhere that allows him to switch between the two like Melusine or Summer Barghest

• He seems like the kind of character I would throw all my prototype gimmicks at to see what sticks, just for the heck of it

Elita-1

• I headcanon her to be an Assassin class unit, more based on how she handles her opponents rather then her character

• High ranking "Independent Action" passive, but very low Luck. Poor girl can never catch a break. Her "Presence Concealment" would probably be about average, so somewhere in the B range

• I think she would have another Single-Target NP, and given her class’s knack for generating critical stars, she’s probably another Quick unit. Except I’d make her deck have three Quick cards instead of Bee’s two (double Quick, double Arts)

• Admittedly I was pretty stumped with this one, I think I ran out of brain juice while coming up with the others. Either that or the after work fatigue is kicking in again

Sentinel Prime (or as I like to call him Sentinel Douchebag)

• This is going to sound really wild, but hear me out: Moon Cancer

• Now I hear you saying "Goose, what does this motherfucker have to do with the moon? Or any moon?" And the truth is nothing at all. But he is to Cybertron what BB (the servant who made the class) is to the Moon Cell, a Cancer; an all encompassing evil that fundamentally changes the game. One that must be stopped at all costs, but unlike BB, his evil does not come from a place of care for the people.

• This class is the most objectively evil in its roots as even the Beasts have love in their hearts somewhere, so it makes perfect sense to throw this beautiful bastard in here. This class also has the smallest roster of characters in the game so there’s plenty of room for innovation.

• I see him having a double Arts, Double Buster deck with an Arts NP, probably AOE. He is also the second character to be receiving my new "Threat to Cybertron" trait, funnily enough I strictly had him in mind when coming up with it, and gave it to Megatron as an afterthought. That’s how much of a bitch he is in this movie.

• Him and Airachnid would be a dual package, just like Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryou; with Airachnid appearing in his skill animations and NP, maybe having a couple voice lines of her own.

It’s rare for Urushihara to have the apartment to himself these days, and that makes it all the more offensive to have an intruder who hadn’t been relevant in ages up until recently. The fan continued to whir in the background and for once the breeze was actually giving him enough reprieve from the sweltering that he had goosebumps. With the constant humidity, this was something welcome, unlike Gabriel’s presence. He’d give his back teeth to see Alas Ramus beating his ass any day; he’d only heard the recounts from Maou and Emilia, but he was sure such a sight would keep him entertained for the next few decades. 

Even after writing down the original demon king’s “treasures” he hadn’t moved to leave and it was beginning to cut into his online shopping time. 

“It looks like a drunk seven year old wrote this,” Gabriel sighed, looking at the paper. “Really?”

“I can type ninety words a minute, y’know dude.”

“Mm’kay…how can you be alive for this long and still have handwriting like that? Is that not a part of NEET pride?”

“No.” Urushihara rolled his eyes and shook his head. For a moment there was silence save for the clacking of his keyboard and the whirring of his fan. All this back and forth was starting to drain him.

“So…think of any other treasures?” 

“Dude, that’s all I got. Like I said, most Satans are poor.” He gestured to the room around them before pointedly turning back to the screen. Eventually the big lug would show himself out. He rubbed his nose. A tickle had taken root and had been prickling at the pack of his nose since earlier in the morning and much like Gabriel, it had stubbornly refused to leave. He’d lost track of how much he’d sneezed today already. 

Eventually, he couldn’t take it anymore.

“Hehh…” He took in a vocal inhale and with one hand, turned the brightness of the screen up for encouragement, and with the other hand brought his collar up over his nose before sneezing violently into the fabric of his shirt. “hAH’KSSHhieeh!” 

Gabriel flinched at the loud expulsion, but his initial expression of confusion quickly shifted to amusement. “Bless you? Oh wait. Can I say that given your…condition?”

Urushihara glared at him. “Dude, you’re actually not, like, supposed to say anything here.” He pulled a tissue out from the dwindling supply in the travel pack next to his leg.

“Hm. But I have a question.”

Urushihara blew his nose. Noisily. 

Gabriel took this as his cue to continue. Apparently he was already correcting his earlier digression of reading the mood. “Since when do you sneeze like that?”He was on his way to becoming a second-rate-NEET after all. 

Urushihara turned red. “Like what? Leave me ahhlone,” he protested, breath hitching slightly with the threat of another performance. Fuck. He scrubbed at his nose, but from the persistent way his eyes kept trying to close, he knew trying to ward off the sneeze was a lost cause. 

Gabriel put his stupid hands on his stupid hips and bent forward like a stupid rooster waiting for a worm to come out of the ground. “I’ll wait. You take your time, bud.”

“hadhtKSHH’iieeh!” Urushihara crumpled forward and shook from the kickback of the sneeze. He emitted a raspy groan and sniffled and rubbed his nose with his wrist.

“I’m really just supposed to not comment on that?” 

“Dude,” Urushihara grumbled and sniffled. “What do you want from me?” Gabriel scratched his head and sighed. “Well, I came all this way and you gave me nothung, so—”

“Nothung is a sword. What do you want from me?”

“Oh.” Gabriel relaxed slightly as Lucifer gave him a look of contempt. He helped himself to a glass of cold barley tea. “All I’m sayin’ is you were pretty notorious for having a cute little kitten sneeze.”

Urushihara suppressed a shudder as he fished out another tissue and shook his head. “Don’t say kitten.” 

“Just wondering why you’re suddenly screaming. Trying to compensate for—“

Urushihara groaned and cut him off. “Dude, what the hell? Where do you get off coming here to insult me?” He sniffled again and gave his nose an upward swipe with the tissue and then he continued reading the Poketure TV tropes page. “Keep your crush to yourself. I’m not interested.”

“Aw, don’t be like that.” Gabriel rubbed the back of his neck and let out a huff of amusement. “Besides, I’m pretty sure I’m outta your league nowadays, so—“

“You’re a damn baby snatcher!” 

Gabriel winced and sat next to him. “Well, I did have some juicy info for you, bud, but after that, I think I’m gonna need some compensation.”

“Dude, Ashiya’ll literally rip you a new one if you take one more thing from the fridge.”

Gabriel smiled. “C’mon, not like that. Guess you can say I’ve been bored too, m’kay?”

“Try getting a life,” Urushihara muttered under his breath as he attempted to return to his own in discovering some fan analyses of the most recent movie in the franchise. He sniffled again and coughed briefly. 

“You getting a cold there, bud?”

“I don’t know, okay?” 

Gabriel leaned in and poked the tip of his nose. “Bang.” 

“What—hih-hht-! ugh f-fuck you.” He’d been a fraction of a second late in batting his hand away and the damage had already been done. “hehhdt…KKSHHh! HehKSSHHH’iEEH!”

“Hm…you probably are.”

“What the hell?” Urushihara crossed his arms and moved out of his reach. He pinched away a few tears from the inner corners of his eyes before flashing a glare. “What are you talking about?”

“You probably have a cold.” Gabriel made himself comfortable on the tatami mat beside him. “Did you start sneezing like that to seem tough around the demons?” 

“Dude, no!” Urushihara’s frown turned into a look of disgust. “You’re so weird. Stop asking me questions about my sneezes.”

“I’m already not reading the mood.”

“Congrats.” 

“You know, you should be a little nicer to me.” Gabriel sighed.

Urushihara rolled his eyes and grabbed another tissue. The day he started sucking up to Gabriel would be when hell had been frozen over for a millennia. His nose stung with each chafe of the cheap one-ply fabric, and he was starting to think he did in fact have a cold.

“You don’t really sound good. Was falling really worth it?” 

“Yes.” Urushihara lowered the tissue for a moment and then squinted slightly before pinching off the budding itch. He was getting more nasally with each word. “And if you think so, that's another good reason to leave.”

“I’m sure you could use the company.”

Urushihara ignored him and scrolled further down the page and smirked at the text. The Thing That Would Not Leave, he read. How cliché. If he could just sit there in silence, eventually Gabriel would leave. Unfortunately, with the way the past few hours had been going, it might not be so easy, and the glare from the blue-tinted light was actively working against his attempts at ignoring the itch that was worsening with every inhale. 

“Need another tissue?” Gabriel asked in amusement as he looked over him. He leaned in closer and smiled. “Looks like you’re gonna start up again.”

“Juhhstt stop talki’hhg abouhht—heh…KSHh! Ihkshh! h’KTshh! Iht’kshh!” He sneezed in rapid fire succession, wrist moving up halfway through the fit to cover his nose. They kept coming on, fittish and pitchy, and he was unable to do anything other than ride it out. “mpt’TSShh! http’SHhhee! ihh..hh’TSchhieh!”

“Yeah, that’s more like I remember.”

“Hehht’ZSHHh! Okay? Happy?” He buried his nose into a fresh tissue and blew it again. It was filled and rendered useless after emptying one nostril and he needed to grab a few more. 

Gabriel also took a tissue and wiped the spray from his obnoxious t-shirt. In retrospect, he shouldn’t have gotten so close, but his curiosity had been appeased so he’d accept the consequences. “Guess I’m satisfied for now. Anyway, as I was gonna say…you really should be nicer to me, mm’kay? I’m the only reason The Watcher is standing down.”

“The—“ Urushihara sniffled and took a deep breath. “Why didn’t you lead with that? What the hell?”

“You should’ve guessed, because Sariel—“

“Hdt’ShhHieh! No! How would I know I’ve been out of the loop for like ever!”

“Aw. Bless y—“

“Dude I’m about to make a few calls and have you escorted out.”

“I’ll be long gone by the time you do.” Gabriel smiled. “Anyway, if you wanna do this again sometime, here’s my number.” He tore a paper and scrawled his number on it and flicked it at him. “Call me if you want to do this again sometime.”

“In your dreams.”

“Hope you have a nice day, bud.” Gabriel’s smile only widened before he finally left. 

Urushihara switched tabs and added same-day-shipping lotion-infused tissues to the cart.

I really enjoy using this blog to share my favorite things from the Inazuma Fandom, and while I'm aware I still owe to talk about the ending of the Ina11 Champions League, I'd like to share something more recent instead.

Back on January 5th, the french fanbase had released its first Ina11 ROM Hack (I SUPPOSE), IE Ultimate. Pretty much a harder version of IE3 from what I've seen. Nonetheless, the moment I saw Pierre on the trailer I was HOOKED. What was that!? A stronger version of Rose Griffon for the story!?

...Turns out it was something more than that: A whole Euro B Team!

These screenshots come from a french Twitch streamer named Rems; I'll be using them to comment about what this team has to offer. The full stream seems to have been deleted unfortunately, but then again it wasn't a big loss. The dude not only sped up hissatsus at any chance, but he kept repeating the match everytime he feels like he's losing (Yes, that happens a lot here). Got boring at times :/

Same thing with Fermín, I guess. Apparently they took Stinger from him (God Bless 🙏) and gave him something better.

...Even if the playthrough itself was kinda boring, seeing this team was so good to me. Typically when seeing every single Euro B match vs the average IE player, it always ends with these teams getting steamrolled by 6 goals or something. For this ROM to take a different route and give them the justice they deserve, I love it!

Though there is few flaws, like that Jonas got excluded from the main team for some reason and some picked characters can be odd. But I'm very glad for this beautiful thing just to kick off 2024 🙏🥺 Shoutout to the creators of this ROM, @/Ytbrems and @/LacarpeM; please support them regardless of the language barrier :D

Niu, have you ever heard of Okage: Shadow King (Boku to Maou)? Something you reblogged reminded me of the atmosphere of the game, and I thought you might enjoy the vibes. It's one of my favorite games ever, and the soundtrack is quirky and so fun.

I was wondering how I have completely missed this game, never even heard of it.
