From the play by Edmond Rostand, based on the life of the historically big-nosed 17th century writer and wit who *actually* fought like a hundred fellers on his own at the Porte de Nesle (he also really chased off that actor, and wrote great love letters, many of which were published and subsequently cribbed by Rostand for the play).

I think Peter Dinklage being cast as Cyrano is fucking brilliant casting actually, and it lets Peter Dinklage be the romantic lead he's always wanted, and deserved, to be.

Like sometimes modern adaptations are whatever, but that particular subject matter and casting Peter is absolutely genius.

1. Vienna by Billy Joel. Very relatable, very comforting, it got me through some pretty stressful times back in uni. Sometimes you just need a soft piano and a warm voice reminding you that It's alright, you can afford to lose a day or two.

2. Cirano by Francesco Guccini, especially the live version bc it conveys so much emotion. As for why, well, I'm a Cyrano girlie, no surprise there. Fave lyrics: le verità cercate / per terra, da maiali, / tenetevi le ghiande / lasciatemi le ali and that last Per sempre tuo, per sempre tuo, per sempre tuo that gives me shivers every single time.

3. L'espantaocells by El Pony Pisador. The first time I heard it my phone looped it automatically and it triggered my tavern wench reflex so bad I woke up an hour later having done all my chores. The fact that I do not understand the lyrics probably adds to the hypnotic effect. As we way back home, provare per credere.

4. Lucky by Donna Murphy. Once you get past the cognitive dissonance of hearing Mother Gothel sing a genuinely sweet, longing lullaby, it's great! Fave lyrics: Lucky / the people who have you / in their lives / to kiss goodnight / to wake with the light / I hope those people realize / they're lucky.

5. Inkpot Gods by The Amazing Devil. This is just an all-around great song, it packs power both in the sound and in the lyrics, it might punch you straight in the soul and/or give you a nice warm hug and tell you you've got this. Fave lyrics: And what you see is not the dark / it's just the gods upturning inkpots / cause they know what you'll become and the ever-impactful, ever-relatable Cause I'm more than what my mum told me to be.

here's a wee bit of something new i am affectionately calling "queerano de bergerac" aka a Cyrano AU aka henry is paid to write love letters to alex on behalf of a girl and you can only guess what happens next <3 this is so silly and i kind of adore it. I shared the snippet that comes right before this linked here.

“But somehow you know you are in love with him? I’m not judging you,” He absolutely is. “I’m just trying to understand.” “I guess…I can’t stop looking at his curls in class. They’re so glossy and bouncy. He keeps gatekeeping his curly hair routine and I’m so mad at him for it! And I love to hear what he has to say whenever he raises his hand. He always has great things to add. I think of him when I wake up and when I go to bed and—” “I’m not sure if all of this constitutes being in love, though.” Henry rubs harder at his temple. The headache is slowly but surely making its way to his left side, and he’s getting irritated. “No, it’s definitely love. I think about him all the time! It’s definitely more than a crush. I’ve had crushes before and they’ve all stopped because the guys are so dumb. But Alex…Alex is so different.” Amber has a dreamy expression on her face. Henry doesn’t want to discourage her, not when she’s willing to pay him for something he could do in his sleep. So, he continues.  Henry grabs a pen from his backpack, uncapping the lid with his teeth. “Okay. Okay. There’s some stuff we can work with here…how you want to see only him, how you think he’s interesting and popular…that you think he’s smart and cool…we’ll just have to tweak it a little.” He’s crossing out parts of the letter in red and adding in a few words here and there. He can salvage this. Amber is quiet, which Henry knows is deeply concerning. “Have you ever been in love, Henry?”
