The storm is likely to cross the Tamil Nadu coast in the next 3-4 hours.Citing data and observations, IMD-Regional Meteorological Centre, Additional Director General, S Balachandran told PTI that the process of the cyclone’s landfall commenced at about 5.30 pm on Saturday.The storm, which brought heavy rainfall and strong winds with a speed up to 90 kmph, has led to the closure of schools and colleges in several parts of the state and the halt of public services.Cyclone Fengal LandfallHourly update 1900 ISTMovement speed : 7kmph60 km east-northeast of Puduchery.Forward sector of spiral bands entered land�� Tamilnadu Weather-IMD (@ChennaiRmc) November 30, 2024India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for heavy rain in several parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.  The IMD also issued a red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rain on Saturday in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry.IMD also predicted heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam districts and Karaikal area.“The Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL" [pronounced as FEINJAL] over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-southwestwards with a speed of 7 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 1730 hours IST of today, the 30th November 2024 over the southwest Bay of Bengal off North Tamil Nadu coast near latitude 12.2°N and longitude 80.3°E, about 40 km away from the coast, 50 km south-southeast of Mahabalipuram, 60 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 90 km south of Chennai," IMD said in an official statement.Earlier today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the Disaster Management Control Room in Chennai and reviewed the arrangements and precautionary measures taken by the state government in the wake of Cyclone Fengal.Flight Operations Suspended At Chennai AirportAs a precautionary measure to the cyclonic storm, all arrival and departure flights have been cancelled at the Chennai Airport, the authorities said on Saturday, adding that the restrictions will imposed till 4 am on Sunday. As of now, 55 flights have been cancelled. Parts of the airport were inundated due to the heavy rains.“In light of Cyclonic Storm ‘Fengal’ and the forecasted high crosswinds, as predicted by IMD, Chennai Airport operations will be suspended from 1230 hrs to 1900 hrs on 30.11.2024 (Today) following safety concerns raised by stakeholder airlines. We recommend passengers check with their respective airlines regarding their flights," Airports Authority of India (AAI) said in a post on X.Air India also suspended its flight operations to and from Chennai airport till 7am on Sunday due to unfavourable weather conditions in wake of the cyclone.The complete disruption of services left the passengers in a lurch and according to ballpark estimates from official sources, over 10,000 people could have been affected due to cancellations and diversions. While the services were hit, nearly 1,000 passengers continued to stay back inside the airport premises to take the first available flight from here to their respective destinations.As many as 20 flights were cancelled in Hyderabad as well which were services to and from Chennai and Tirupati.Health Services ImpactedAdditional Chief Secretary Health Dept Govt of Tamil Nadu Supriya Sahu said that Chromepet’s Government Hospital was waterlogged due to heavy rainfall. She informed that all the essential services were shifted to the first floor during the cyclone preparedness.“I made a visit and interacted with patients, doctors and nurses. Commend the tireless efforts of doctors & the team ensuring patient safety during these challenging times. To address the issue permanently a 300-bedded hospital at a cost of Rs 110 Cr is sanctioned by the Govt. It is under construction in the vicinity and will be operational early next year," she said.Coastal Roads Closed, IT Employees Asked For WFHIn view of the changing weather conditions due to the cyclonic storm, the Tamil Nadu government directed authorities to suspend public transport movement on key roads, including the East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), during the afternoon of November 30.The routes running close to the coastal areas are temporarily suspended for vehicular movement to mitigate the risk posed by the cyclonic storm, said the government, adding that the step will prevent danger to life by strong winds and heavy rain during the landfall process.Additionally, the state government also directed the IT companies to allow their employees to opt for work from home on November 30. The step was taken to reduce the number of people commuting during the storm’s peak hours.Cyclone Fengal, which intensified into a cyclonic storm on November 29, is predicted to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry around midday, the IMD said.Advisory Issued For Fishermen, Relief Camps InstalledThe state authorities have issued advisories for fishermen and residents, urging them to stay alert as the cyclonic storm approaches. The coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, especially around Karaikal and Puducherry, are expecting rough sea conditions, strong winds, and rainfall.With preparations in place, the Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Department set up 2,229 relief camps across the state, ensuring that resources are available for those who may need shelter during the storm’s landfall time. Similar preparations were seen across Puducherry.SSP Puducherry, Kalaivanan said, “For the last four days we have been deploying police personnel along the beach and apart from this we are also informing the fishermen and people living in low-lying areas to be careful. Fishermen are not venturing into the sea. Since last night, we have closed all the beaches.
