Four dead, nearly 1k stranded in train as Tamil Nadu rain fury rages on
In the wake of extreme rainfall wreaking havoc across southern Tamil Nadu, at least four districts, including Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, are grappling with severe flooding and displacement. The relentless downpour, reaching record-breaking levels, has prompted urgent action from authorities, with over 7,500 people evacuated to relief camps. Tragically, four lives have been lost in rain-related incidents, and officials are actively seeking details on the incidents.
Unprecedented Rainfall and Evacuations: The districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi have witnessed their highest-ever daily rainfall, causing extensive flooding. Kayalpattinam in Thoothukudi recorded a staggering 96 cm of rainfall in 24 hours, leading to unprecedented situations. Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena termed the rainfall as “unprecedented” and announced the requisitioning of Indian armed forces for assistance.
IMD’s Red Alert and Regional Impact: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for the four districts, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall. However, the actual rainfall surpassed expectations, causing widespread damage. A total of 39 locations in these districts reported extremely heavy rain, with Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli registering its highest single-day rainfall in decades.
Causes and Response: The Regional Meteorological Centre attributed the intense rainfall to a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area in southeast Sri Lanka. The state government has declared a four-day holiday for schools and colleges, recognizing the severity of the situation. Rescue efforts, involving over 17 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are underway, with more than 7,500 people evacuated to relief camps.
Government Actions and Challenges: Chief Minister MK Stalin, monitoring the situation, has sought an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the flood crisis. Governor RN Ravi has convened a meeting with senior officials of central agencies and armed forces for a comprehensive review. Challenges include landslides, breaches in water bodies, disrupted power supply, and transportation.
Outlook and Future Predictions: While the rainfall has subsided in some areas, the IMD predicts continued heavy to very heavy rain in specific districts. The situation remains critical, with ongoing rescue operations and a heightened state of alertness in flood-affected regions.
As southern Tamil Nadu battles this unprecedented natural calamity, the resilience of communities and the coordinated efforts of authorities will play a crucial role in overcoming the aftermath. The nation watches with concern as the region grapples with the aftermath of this extraordinary deluge.

Ants
Origin and Morphology
Ant is an insect of the family Formicidae. The word ant originated from 'Ante', which initially meant "the biter". More than 13,800 species of ants are categorised based on the variation in the surroundings, out of which more than 2000 species are found in Asia. Some examples are moisture ants, wood ants, fire ants, carpenter ants, and red ants. Ants have successfully adapted to different environmental conditions; hence these are found almost everywhere in the world.
Ants have distinct morphology from other insects in having four distinct parts, as shown in the figure below (Figure 1). Generally, the size of ants varies from 0.75- 52 mm.
Figure 1. Morphology of Ants
The caste system in ants and reproduction
Ants live in a colony. The population may range from a few dozen in small cavities to millions in a well-organized colony. A colony may contain a queen, males or drones and workers (Figure 2). The queen is a reproductive female with large wings and can be one or more in a colony. Like queens, the males have large wings. However, they do not contribute to the colony tasks. They can also mate with existing queens. In a system, only the queen and breeding females have the ability to mate.
Generally, ants produce a new generation each year, and winged females and winged males leave the colony in nuptial flight during the species-specific breeding period. The nuptial flight usually takes place in the hot and humid weather since heat makes flying easier, and the ground becomes softer to dig nests for mated queens due to rain.
The workers are the ants who do most of the work in the colonies. They are the majority in number when compared to males and queens. Their main tasks are to look after the ants in the different stages of the lifecycle, find food, and look after males and queens.
Figure 2. Different types of ants in a colony
The life cycle of an ant
The ants undergo three key phases before starting their service to the colony. These phases are the egg, the larvae, and the pupae. The queen lays eggs which stick to each other, making it easier for the workers to transfer the eggs from one place to the other. The queen consumes the unfertilised eggs to obtain the nutrients when food is unavailable to them during the finding of a new colony.
The egg is transformed into the larvae. It is like the egg stage, just the size of the ant grows. Also, the ant can turn their heads in this stage, although the body's movement is restricted. During this stage, the larvae are fed liquids as it requires proteins to grow into an adult ants. Towards the end of the larvae stage, it becomes inactive and releases all the toxic products produced throughout the cycle.
The pupae are the last stage before turning into an adult. When the pupae are fully grown, the adult ant comes out. It grows darker in colour with time. During the early days, the ants perform the in-colony duties. The ants which are getting old are encouraged to work outside the colony by putting their lives at risk.
Communication among ants
They communicate to alert of danger, exchange solid food, clean themselves, recognise the members etc. They communicate using scent, touch, body language and sound. They use their antennae as their nose to smell things, touch other ants, and pass information about food and its location to them. Like us, they use body language to indicate fellow ants, like saving the food for the future or allowing someone to taste some of it. When communication cannot be done by any other method, and they use sound, our ears cannot detect this sound.
Significance of ants
According to Hindu Mythology, tiny black ants are considered innocent as they do not bite anyone. As per the legend, the Devas took the form of black ants before they started living in the Erumbeeswarar Temple, Thiruverumbur, Tamil Nadu, to worship Lord Shiva. They did not cause any trouble to the devotees, who would feed them sugar and grains. After some time, they transformed into their original form before returning to heaven. It is also said that the best time to prepare mothaks for Lord Vinayaka is when many black ants gather in a house.
To conclude, many things can be learned from the ants which can be applied in our day-to-day life, such as hard work, strength, productivity, adaptability, discipline, and a great community.

Dhairya
