Senator Kyrsten Sinema said Wednesday that she is furious that $100 million in federal aid for migrants is being distributed to New York City instead of Arizona, which she says is bearing the biggest burden of the border crisis.

Arizona, her home state, and Texas have been hit with massive influxes of illegal immigrants seeking resources and shelter for months, she said.

“What we’re experiencing here in Arizona is matched only by what folks are experiencing in southern Texas,” the now-independent senator said during an event in the Yuma sector of Arizona near the southern border, according to the Hill. “Those are the two communities that are experiencing this crisis. The rest of the country is seeing some elements of it, but we are facing the brunt.”

Democratic Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced Wednesday that $104.6 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds will be sent to New York City to help accommodate the thousands of migrants pouring in.

“It is wrong and unfair that the money is going to places other than south Texas and south Arizona,” Sinema said. “The fact that a yeoman’s amount of this money went to New York City, in my opinion, is wrong because they are not a border state and they are not facing the kind of pressure that we are facing here. I want you to know that I am continuing to fight this, and I am livid.”

Mayor Eric Adams and 54 other NYC Democratic lawmakers have repeatedly pleaded with the federal government to help New York City, which has been overwhelmed by an inflow of illegal immigrants, and to improve border enforcement. Some 93,200 migrants have arrived in the city since spring 2022, according to the New York Post. More than 2,500 migrants are still arriving in the city weekly.

In January, Adams said the city was at its “breaking point” with the arrivals. He toured the border town of El Paso, Texas, and demanded that the Biden administration address illegal border crossings.

“We’re pointing the finger at our national government,” Adams said. “This is a national problem. We must have real immigration reform, and we must immediately have a short-term fix of making sure that the cost of this does not fall on our local cities.”

The White House responded to Adams’s plea by offering a federal liaison, but no additional money.

Earlier this week, dozens of migrants were seen on video sleeping on the ground outside the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City after the hotel, which has been serving as a makeshift processing center for asylum seekers, reached capacity over the weekend. There were so many migrants waiting to be taken into the shelter that many slept shoulder-to-shoulder across three full blocks, the New York Post reported.

Illegal border crossings surged in July despite the sweltering heat, according to preliminary U.S. Customs and Border Protection data obtained by the Washington Post. This defied a historical pattern that holds that migrant apprehensions typically decrease in the summer.

The uptick in migrant apprehensions was most noticeable in southern Arizona, where temperatures reached above 110 degrees for much of the last month. In the Tucson sector alone, Border Patrol agents arrested around 40,000 illegal immigrants, the highest one-month total for the area in 15 years, CBP data indicate.

Mark Krikorian, executive director for the Center for Immigration Studies, told National Review that much migrant traffic that had been entering the U.S. via the Rio Grande in Texas has been redirected to Arizona because of Texas governor Greg Abbott’s crackdown on illegal border crossings.

“Why are numbers going going up in Arizona instead of Texas?” he said. “That is due at least in part to the fact that Abbott is doing everything in his power to disrupt illegal immigration in the Rio Grande.”

Texas border personnel have been cutting down vegetation often used for cover along the border, expanding the state police presence, and erecting razor wire and other physical obstacles along the Rio Grande riverbank, he said.

They’ve also positioned a chain of buoys typically used for maritime harbor security on the water, he said. They roll over when a person tries to climb on them, and they have netting underneath to prevent people from swimming under. Last week, the Justice Department sued Texas over the floating barriers, asking the court to order the state to remove the 1,000-foot stretch of buoys installed near Eagle Pass, Texas. It is also sought an injunction to bar Texas from installing new ones.

In my hometown, that guy was Ron.

I don’t know what his official education may have been, but I do know that he has been around the block a few times when it came to reptiles.

He once told my father and I a story about how, as a 12-year-old in the 60s, he got “some chameleon eggs for almost nothing, because nobody was very good at hatching chameleons back then and didn’t think they’d be worth raising.” You know who was apparently pretty good at hatching chameleons though, even in the 60s? Ron. As he told it, he had one hell of a time explaining to his parents 1) why there were 60-some-odd baby chameleons loose in the bathroom and 2) what the hell he was going to do about it. He credited “a lot of research about chameleons and,” – he emphasized this – “their native habitat” for his success in not just hatching all those eggs, but also keeping the majority alive long enough to be past the riskiest parts of life and safely rehomed. He then told us he got a license to import exotic reptiles at age 15 – before he could even drive.

I don’t know what all-else Ron did between then and the point at which he “retired” to owning and operating a reptile store with his wife, Donna; but, I do know that Ron’s Reptiles was, if not the best, my favorite pet store of all time.

Ron and Donna ran the store out of their home on the rural edge of town. It was out of the way to get to and inside it was rather cramped and, perhaps expectedly, smelled like reptiles (which is not a bad or dirty scent, but one of coconut husk and aspen shavings and the specific and peculiar musk of shed skin). It was not a very large home and you could see into their livingroom and kitchen through one of the rooms; I got to meet their dogs over the small gate they had set up so they could easily move between the two when their scattered customers showed up. In this not-very-large home the two front rooms were the two officially open to the public during business hours.

As you would walk in the front door you’d be met with a shallow hallway, with primarily merchandise – enclosures, decor, packaged foods – and their living area to the right and the majority of animals to the left. Both rooms were fun to explore and most – if not all – of their own animals were also out on display, with name-plates and descriptions on their enclosures instead of sale-prices. Even more fun could be had, though.

Because, if they weren’t too busy and you asked nicely, both Ron and Donna were always happy to give you a reptile experience.

They might open up some of the adult, breeding animals’ enclosures and introduce you; because every one had a name and a story. They might give you some lettuce and let you feed the huge sulcata tortoises or the puppy-dog rhino iguana. On extra special occasions, they might let you in to see the eggs and newest hatchlings in the back, or take you outside to tour the rodent sheds.

And, of course, Ron’s Reptiles could also be hired for those ever-memorable reptile parties and classroom talks.

Every interaction I ever had with Ron – at his store, the local reptile show (which he founded, btw), or one of his educational talks – it was crystal clear exactly how very much he loved reptiles and how excited he was for the opportunity to share his knowledge and experiences and joy with anyone and everyone. He was even once on the front page of the Wall Street journal talking about his snakes.

Ron’s Reptiles closed a few years ago – Ron was having a tough time running everything by himself after Donna passed. He moved to Arizona not long after – to be closer to his children and grandchildren, I believe – and he let many of his animals go in the process. I don’t know what he’s up to now, but some of his animals are still being used as animal ambassadors in my hometown. Living-torches passed down to a new team of educators working to dispel myths and spread a love of reptiles amongst new generations of children.

Children who will wake up one day and wonder, “who even was that? what were their credentials?”

Conrad Robert Murray (born February 19, 1953) is a Grenadian-American former cardiologist and convicted felon. He was the personal physician of Michael Jackson on the day of his death in 2009. In 2011, Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death for having inadvertently overdosed him with a powerful surgical anesthetic, propofol, which was being improperly used as a bedtime sleep agent. Murray served just under two years out of his original four-year prison sentence.

Early life

Conrad Robert Murray was born on February 19, 1953, and was raised by his maternal grandparents, who were farmers in Grenada until he joined his mother, Milta, in Trinidad and Tobago when he was seven years old. He grew up poor in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago. He did not meet his father, Rawle Andrew Sr., also a physician, until he was 25. Andrew, who died in 2001, was devoted to providing medical services to the poor. Murray finished high school and worked as a volunteer elementary school teacher in Trinidad. After teaching, he worked as a customs clerk and insurance underwriter to save up for college tuition.

Education

In 1973, Murray moved to Houston, Texas, where his father worked, to attend Texas Southern University, and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in pre-med and biological sciences. Murray continued his education at Meharry Medical College, in Nashville, Tennessee, the same school his father attended, and the first medical school in the Southern United States for African Americans.[citation needed] He began his internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Murray completed it at the Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. He then completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Arizona.

Career

Murray worked at the Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego as an associate director of its cardiology fellowship training program. In 1990, he opened a private practice in Las Vegas. In 2006, he founded the Acres Homes Heart and Vascular Institute in Houston. Murray met Michael Jackson in 2006, in Las Vegas, and treated his daughter Paris when she fell ill. Jackson hired Murray to be his exclusive personal physician prior to his tour in July 2009. Jackson insisted that Murray be employed by his show promoter, AEG Live, for $150,000 monthly. However, AEG later claimed that there was never a contract with Murray. Murray and AEG agree that Murray was never paid. In 2018, Murray released a memoir, This Is It!, which detailed his experience as Michael Jackson's physician and tells of having treated Mother Teresa. Murray wrote,

However my most magnanimous and noble patient is also deceased. She was the world-renowned quintessential nun who is now a saint: Mother Theresa. I loved the way I dedicated my services to her, it was totally selfless because when I agreed to serve her, I literally had no idea then that she was widely known…

The A.V. Club called the book "literary poison with no antidote"[6] and The Daily Telegraph said that any revelations it contains are "mired in several thousand words of self-aggrandising, poorly punctuated and repetitive text."[7]

In May 2023, Murray opened his own institute entitled, "DCM Medical Institute" in El Socorro, a suburb of San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago.[8]

Personal life

Murray is a naturalized U.S. citizen. In May 2009, Murray began working as Jackson's personal physician. By that time, he had reportedly fathered seven children by six different women. He was in arrears on the mortgage for the Las Vegas home occupied by his first wife and children and owed child support to the mothers of children outside of his marriage, which he could not pay due to the amount of money he owed to Michael Jackson's family. He was married to Blanche, his second wife, whom he met at medical school, and helped pay rent for another woman, Nicole Alvarez. Murray met Alvarez at a gentlemen's club in Las Vegas when she worked as a stripper, and Alvarez gave birth to their son Che Giovanni Murray in March 2009. Another relationship, with a cocktail waitress from Houston, was also reported.

Murray was at risk of losing his California medical license due to unpaid child support to one of his children and owed $13,000 to a California woman, Nenita Malibiran. Murray was a defendant in numerous civil lawsuits (though none for medical malpractice). By 2008, he had accumulated over $600,000 in court judgments against him for medical equipment and unpaid rent for his practices in Texas and Nevada. He also owed $71,000 for student loans at Meharry Medical College. Murray had filed for bankruptcy in 2002, in California.

Death of Michael Jackson

On June 25, 2009, months after hiring Murray, Jackson died due to a lethal dose of propofol administered by Murray. Court documents released in August 2009 revealed that the coroner's preliminary conclusion indicated that Jackson overdosed on propofol. However, the coroner's office declined to comment on reports claiming that the death was ruled a homicide.

Several offices of doctors who were believed to have treated Jackson were searched. Based on the autopsy and toxicology findings, the cause of Jackson's death was determined to be acute propofol intoxication with a contributory benzodiazepine effect and the manner of death to be a homicide, eventually, so that the focus of the investigation shifted toward Murray. He admitted administering 25 mg of propofol intravenously, for insomnia, on the night of Jackson's death. He claimed that he tried treating him with other drugs and that he only administered the propofol after Jackson insisted, according to a police affidavit.

Murray said he worried that Jackson had become dependent on the drug to get to sleep and was trying to wean him from it. Though any FDA-approved drug can be used off-label in a responsible manner that is medically appropriate for their patient, the indicated use for propofol is for anesthesia—not as a sleep aid—and is therefore properly given in a hospital or a clinical setting with close monitoring. Accordingly, propofol is supposed to be administered on the orders of an anesthesiologist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), critical care physician (intensivist), or an emergency medicine physician who received extensive training in the use and monitoring of anesthetics; Murray had no such specialty training.

In February 2011, Murray was formally charged with involuntary manslaughter. On September 27, 2011, Murray went on trial in Los Angeles and was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on November 7, 2011. His bail was revoked and he was remanded to custody pending his November 29 sentencing date. He received the maximum penalty of four years in prison. His Texas medical license was revoked, and his California and Nevada licenses were suspended. After serving two years, Murray was released on parole on October 28, 2013.

Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Murray in 2010 but dropped it in 2012. Also in 2010, Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, and three children, filed a separate wrongful death suit against concert promoter AEG, claiming that the company was negligent in hiring Murray; the jury decided in favor of AEG in 2013.

In 2016, Inside Edition reported that Murray was "still visiting patients", although Murray claimed that he does not charge patients anything for his services, that he is only "providing a consultation" without prescribing medication, and that therefore he "is not breaking the law".
