EMILIE FLÖGE (1874-1952) First liberated Viennese woman, Austrian Coco Chanel immortalized in Klimt’s phenomenal Kiss. (re)ascending the social ladder Emilie Flöge was born into a Viennese artisan family that had only recently ascended the ladder of social respectability. Her father Hermann was a master turner who had founded a firm that exported Meerschaum pipes, mostly to the British market. between silk and lace Always passionate about fashion, Emilie quickly started working as a seamstress, and when her elder sister, Pauline, opened a dressmaking school in Vienna, Emilie willingly agreed to help. Two years later, in 1895, the two of them won a prestigious dressmaking competition. In 1904 Flöge sisters opened the couture house Schwestern Flöge in Vienna, with interiors designed by Josef Hoffmann. It quickly became a successful enterprise luring wealthy clients committed to modernity in all its forms. At its prime, the company employed nearly 80 workers. reforming the dress In addition to heading the Schwestern Flöge, Emilie also maintained a direct, hands-on role in production, often pinning fabric to a dummy (custom-made to a client’s proportions) before directing fabric-cutters to reassemble it. She traveled to Paris twice a year to source fabric, belts and buttons. But what really fascinated her, was an idea to rethink women’s dress. Using her familiarity with Wiener Werkstätte projects, folk costumes and Japanese textiles, she soon created her very own Reform Dress. revolutionizing fashion stores By the time Chanel opened her first salon in Paris, Flöge had been producing cutting-edge designs in Vienna for several years. Her loose, flowing and bold dresses rejected the tight-laced style of historicist Vienna already carving out new roles for women in the industry. Flöge’s fashion celebrated physical freedom, self-expression, closeness to nature, and the vitality of other ethnicities from within the Austro-Hungarian Empire itself to the Far East. Unlike other retail stores, the Flöge sisters displayed alluring art objects that were not for sale. The store was decorated with beauticians, tortoise shell combs, marbled paper notebooks, silver chalices and hand-carved wooden dolls. Instead of copying popular design trends of the time, Schwestern Flöge was furnished with sleek, adjustable mirrors; geometric, carved wood chairs; and black-and-white chequered tables. relationship with Klimt In 1892 Emilie was introduced to Ernst Klimt, who recently got engaged with her sister - Helene. He was a talented painter gaining recognition for his work alongside his younger brother - Gustav. After Ernst’s death in December 1892, Gustav was made Helene's guardian. At that time Emilie was eighteen years old and Gustav became a frequent guest at the home of her parents, spending the summers with the Flöge family at Lake Attersee. By 1897, Emilie Flöge and Gustav Klimt had become inseparable, and most Viennese close to the couple assumed that she had in fact become his mistress. While there can be no doubt that the couple were passionately attached emotionally, and would spend countless hours in each other's company over the next two decades, some scholars have raised the possibility that their relationship always remained platonic. After 1891, Klimt portrayed her in many of his works. Experts believe that his painting The Kiss (1907–08) shows the artist and Emilie Flöge as lovers. Klimt also drew some garments for the Flöge salon in the rational dress style - a style promoted by the feminist movement - and from 1898, other clothes designed by the Vienna Secession. fin de siècle By the time Nazis invaded Austria in 1938, many of Schwestern Flöge’s clientele, who were Jewish, had fled the country or were deported to concentration camps. Like neighboring businesses — both established and burgeoning — they were forced to close. Emilie Flöge never wrote her memoirs, but despite the paucity of sources historians have been able to reconstruct the story of her powerful influence as the muse of one of fin-de-siècle Vienna's greatest artists. Among the last survivors from an utterly vanished world, she died in Vienna on May 26, 1952. Trying hard to let go
1.6k words
Anakin Skywalker x reader
Waves masterlist
Main Masterlist
Part of the Waves universe, this is sort of a 0.5 story to introduce you to my version of the order etc.
Summary: While on leave, you adjust to life in the city and run into someone who you can never seem to stop finding
warnings: brief argument, grieving the loss of a loved one
a/n: another week, another addition to one of my series! I may find the energy to bust another one out tomorrow, but who knows! Happy reading!
It’s almost as if, since the official commemoration of Master Bosque, a new time period has started. It… feels as if everything that happened when he was alive is the before now, and everything since his death is after. This is strictly after.
You’ve tried and tried and tried to move on. It works sometimes, just distracting yourself, mediating, training the younglings at the Creche, plotting missions you won’t go on. Designing drills and challenges for jedi to practice with (especially Jedi who wield two blades, like you).
Becoming a Master Sentinel has also been an adjustment. After the death of Bosque, you had to take over as the head sentinel on coruscant, moving into an apartment in the highly populated domestic sectors, walking a beat, helping out civilians, catching runaway pets and showing off your lightsabers to small kids (they are always fascinated by the fact that you have, not one, but two white lightsabers, something different, something unique).
You’ve made friends, encounters frequent, while you’re on shore leave, which is how you’ve found yourself in the latest fix: a wedding.
You’ve never been to a wedding before, as all of your friends are Jedi, bound by the code, but your now close friend Callia needed a plus-one to a wedding of one of you other friends, and you weren’t about to let her go alone. So, you had set off to do something you’d never done before: shopping.
It’s a wonderful experience, shopping is. The shops overwhelm you with colors you’d never see in the jedi temple- the flashiest thing you wear is the custom beskar chest plate you’d been gifted after a battle with a high ranking Mandalorian house member. The rest of your attire is strictly shades of brown and the white-and-teal clone armor you wear on your arms in combat.
So the silks and cottons and lush fabrics of the dress shop you’ve stepped into are a shock to you. Callia- bless her- is a whirlwind who does al the work for you, picking out ten different dresses of varying styles and colors appropriate for a wedding, tossing them (and you) into a dressing room.
After a rigorous amount of spinning and pinching and hemming and “hmm”ing and denying scandalous dresses, you come out with two dresses, one, “just in case,” and to “build your wardrobe,” because Jedi, apparently “dress like colorblind grandmothers,” according to Callia.
This is how you end up sitting on the bathroom counter of Calia’s apartment, letting her pint your face with brand new makeup - the products she has wouldn’t work on the tone of your skin, considering that she is Pantoran, and therefore, blue.
She’s radiant, of course, with the golden Pantoran formal headdress adorning her light hair, big eyes, drawn in dark eyeliner, light purple dress draped over her thin frame. She won’t let you look at yourself until she’s done with you. She grabs your chin, dabbing a dark pigment on your lips, smiling.
“Okay, look.”
You turn, eyes widening as you take in the reflection of a girl- not a Jedi. Who you could have been, had you found your way to coruscant on your own, without the help of the Jedi.
could you be attending your own wedding?
no.
There’s no room for doubt and The Force.
You inhale. Was this a mistake?
No, because this is the duty of a Sentinel. Live among the people. Personify the Jedi.
Your dress, a simple sage green dress with a square neck that reaches to your mid-calf, is perfectly fluffy enough for you to hide your sabers under the skirt, thanks to your thigh holsters.
Your hair is pinned back, artfully framing your face in just the right places, and the makeup Callia has painted on is the perfect simple face.
Understated, she calls it.
the rest of the night is uneventful- aside from you struggling to walk in your heels, the misting of your eyes at the sight of the pure happiness passing in the bride and groom’s faces as they tie the final bow and celebrate their union.
It’s warm when the reception ends. You hug your friends whose wedding you’ve just celebrated, wishing them luck through the force, and the you and Callia begin the journey home. On the transit, though, you take off the heels that have been killing your feet, leaving them in plain white socks. It’s okay, because you and Callia are the only ones in this carriage.
The stops drag on as you sit in silence, eyelids drooping, the high fading from the great time you’d had tonight.
The doors slide open to a ruckus, shaking you awake, Callia also takes her head off your shoulder, glancing distractedly at the door. Clones.
More specifically, royal blue painted clones. The 501st.
Fives, one of your favorites of Anakin’s troops, catches sight of you and does a double take.
“General?” he calls out. You smile tiredly at the matching sets of brown eyes that land on you, suddenly feeling completely out of place without your armor, sitting here in civvy clothes coming from a civvy event.
“Hey, boys,” you say, standing up and bowing to them respectfully, just as you would another jedi. “I didn’t know you were on leave, too.”
“Wait! Hold the doors!”
Another clone voice, and two pairs of pounding footsteps, and then a blond trooper enters. Rex, and… Anakin.
You stop short, locking eyes with him, until Callia breaks your intense stare, nudging you with her elbow, clearing her throat.
“Ah, yes. Everyone, this is Callia. Callia, this is Fives, Jesse, Tup, Kix and Hardcase. Over there, the blond, that’s Rex, he’s the Clone commander for the 501st legion. And… that one,” you point at Anakin, “Is General Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi of the Grand republic, the one I told you about.”
The significance of this phrase is loaded for each of you.
To Anakin, you suppose this might mean you’ve told Callia everything. Everything that he said, that he did to make you fall apart.
To you and Callia, you’re referring to the one you grew up training with, your former best friend, though you’ve spared her the details of the argument that made everything go south.
Callia, ever the extrovert, strides forward and pumps Anakin’s hand.
“Nice to meet you! I’m Y/n’s other best friend!”
Well, maybe you left out the former part of the relationship.
“…hi?” Anakin shakes her hand with his glove on, eyes still on you. “Other best friend, huh?”
“Well, she told me how you two grew up together and stuff, so yeah!”
“Callia,” You say. “This is your stop.”
Indeed, her cue to leave is indicated by the holo over the door.
“Oh, well, it’s was nice meeting you guys!” Callia waves to the group of clones gathered awkwardly in the corner of the compartment. They all wave back, vaguely confused by the Pantoran girl who promptly bounces out of the transit vehicle, blowing you a kiss right as the doors close.
“Well, she seems nice,” Anakin tells you, grinning slyly.“Bestie.”
you groan.
How is it that, through the vacuum of space, miles and miles away, you can sense his presence, but on the public Coruscanti transit system, somehow you’re surprised by his appearance?
“She doesn’t seem to grasp that I’m not allowed to have any ‘best friends’.”
Rex shakes his head.
“Don’t know you were living with the civvies, General.”
you shrug.
“It’s new. just this leave I’ve moved into the city.”
Fives shoulders his way to you, face alight with humor.
“What’s got you all dolled up, General? I didn’t think the Jedi were allowed to wear anything but browns.”
“You know, gives, that’s exactly what my friends said when the saw me.” you wave your shows in the air. “I was at a wedding.”
“A wedding.”
“Yes, Skywalker, a wedding. That’s what civilians do. They go to weddings and they go shopping and do all these pointless things just for the fun of it.”
Anakin steps toward you.
“Civilians? But you’d been doing so well at fitting in, with your friends.” He sneers the last word. “Now you refer to them as others?”
You step towards him, too, narrowing your eyes.
“I can have civilian friends, you know. That’s what Sentinels do. We can’t all just swing out lightsabers and blow things up and walk away without consequences.”
“No, face it, Y/n, you’re running. Like you always do.”
“You’re one to talk about running, Skywalker.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Suddenly, you’re hit with an overwhelming wave of weariness. You’re tired of arguing with him and the tense silences and the broken moments. Biting back a reproach, to tell him exactly what that means, you glance around.
The Clones are probably tired of it, too.
“Whatever, Skywalker. I’m not doing this with you again. It always ends with both of us going home hurting.”
Anakin’s perplexed by this, you can see it on his face. Behind him, Rex has a peculiar expression of relief on his face. He probably just wants to see Jex again without having to separate their generals from another screaming match.
Anakin’s shut up, at least.
“This is my stop. goodnight Rex, boys,” You pause, then, quietly, “Goodnight, Anakin.”
It’s not until you tuck yourself into bed and turn over that you realize that this has been the first day since his death that you’ve not thought of Bosque once.
Some part of you jolts at the notion of forgetting him, but how could you? He always was and is a huge part of your life, even in his absence.
And you will always hold him near, but that doesn’t mean you have to regret him all day every day.
You felt him today, you realize. Stepping back from the argument, bidding a polite goodnight to someone you could easily hate.
You can almost feel him hand on your shoulder, showing you the way.
———
Aaaaah starting off with the process of grief! Thanks for letting me ramble to you ;)

Happy NYE/NY everyone!
Because 'tis the season for reflection, I went through my camera roll and picked out the 9 projects from this year that I'm proudest of.
(We all know what posts from this year got the most online attention, but I think it's important to be introspective and think about what projects and posts were actually most valuable to me. Anyways. /soapbox)
Swan Song Scarf (Jasmine Lin, Crafty Coola). This is my design, and although I released it a good while ago, I'm still incredibly proud of it. I spent a lot of time sketching, charting, knitting, ripping back... it was a labor of love, but I'm proud that I stuck with it and got a result I'm happy with. Yarn: Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply (World in a Book and Light Clematis)
Woodland Cardigan (Anna Johanna, Where We Once Knitted). This was my first time steeking, and yeah, I'm pretty gosh-darned proud of that. Yarn: Knit Picks Palette (Wonderland Heather and Calypso Heather)
Anza Dress (Kennis Wong, Itch to Stitch). This was my first time installing buttons, making (sewn) buttonholes, using interfacing (...don't judge me), and sewing scoop pockets. So many new techniques for me, but it created such a polished product and was an excellent learning opportunity. I'm so glad I took the leap with this pattern. Fabric: Singer Brand Cotton Poplin (2 yards)
Color Triangle (p: do you love the color of the sky?). This was my first time using powdered acid dye (read: Big Girl Dye instead of tie-dye/Rit/food coloring)! Obviously the whole color-formulating process for the Color of the Sky shenanigans remains in progress, but I'm proud of this triangle as it is anyways. Fiber: Knit Picks Stroll Bare, Dye: G&S Acid Dyes
Custom Intarsia Blanket. This depicts DNA replication using restriction enzymes and DNA ligase. I did this one for a custom commission, and I'm proud of myself for a) designing it, b) being so free with it, and c) getting to make something science-y! I sketched a rough plan before beginning, but I had to make an absurd amount of adjustments along the way -- in the end, I even had to duplicate stitch over the restriction enzyme bit with a half-strand (i.e. half the plies) of yarn since the stash yarn was too fine. I'm so used to planning everything and then being stubborn; this was a great exercise in adaptability and letting go.
Elderberry Dress (Shavonne Cruz, Mood Sewciety). I'm not one to do muslins or even much fitting on my sewing projects. I tend to just take patterns straight out of the envelope and then sew them, consequences be damned. This dress, though? After each wear, I've been making little adjustments to improve it; shaping the neckline and adjusting the fit, amongst other things. That's something I want to carry forward for my future projects.
Eliane Scrubs (Jalie). These aren't anything particularly special from a technical perspective, but they are possibly my most-worn me-made EVER. They've held up to weekly wear and washing and I'm proud of them for that, as well as of myself for letting my babies "do their job" instead of hiding them way out of fear. Fabric: cotton poplin
Fractal Yarn (p: swirling solar winds). I spun most of this for Tour de Fleece (which feels like a lifetime ago!) and it's a huge accomplishment for me. I'm often afraid to break down gradient braids, so doing a fractal spin was a first for me! I also got it nice and fine; a practical weight for what I usually work with. Fiber: Emily C Gillies (now House of Wool) Luck of the Draw December 2022 on Merino/Silk
Handspun Sweater (p: we pull apart the stars). Ok, so this isn't finished, but handspun sweater. I think that speaks for itself as far as why I'm proud!
#top nine#nye#reflections#craftblr#knitting#sewing#spindle spinning#p: swirling solar winds#p: we pull apart the dark

but pursuant to that post about Brucie Wayne being slutty Batman for Halloween. okay. imagine Gothamites voted in some news channel poll or other. and demanded the Waynes dress up as the Batfam. so they're doing it for charity. ok
Bruce: slutty Batman. choker. bat ear headband. eye shadow
Kate: straight up showed up in leather pants and a bustier. they're not even the right color. her necklace is an official Batwoman product but it's also just a bat on a chain. she did a swirl in her eyeliner to mimic a domino mask. at least she's wearing the right wig.
Beth: Harley Quinn, and getting a lot of flack for it. it's not actually Harley's clothes, but Harley did help her pick them out. it's, like, Batfam Harley, tho, not villain Harley (why are people being so mean when she intentionally didn't dress as Red Alice)
Dick: custom tux designed to be Nightwing blue and black. fitted. gorgeous. little gloves with fingerstripes. actually wearing the same eyeshadow as Bruce and they gave each other dirty looks over it
Luke: an old suit he had, covered in LEDs because he finally got a chance to play with making a lightup suit. no it doesn't do anything but it does have a really convincing Batwing profile, especially once you spotlight him and look at his shadow. he has a domino on to complete the look. it also has LEDs
Jason: not wearing a costume. forgot. also showed up in his red hoodie and leather coat so
Tim: regular tux. Hello My Name Is Red Robin sticker
Steph: easter bunny suit she got on sale (can you believe that??) spray painted purple and with a bat stuck on the front in gold glitter. no it is not sealed yes it is falling everywhere
Cass: totally normal ballgown, not custom made (but fitted). originally Halloween themed, so it does have bats on it, as well as spiders and spiderwebs, in tasteful beads and embroidery. there's a silvery spiderweb collar on it that arguably passes for a Batsymbol. masquerade mask with lots of swirls, black arm length gloves, no her shoes don't have heels but you can't see them either
Damian: his actual Robin costume. refused to wear anything less than the best, plus convenient once something goes wrong. keeps getting corrected on details all night
Duke: cheapest grocery store Signal costume he could find, all foam and weird pointy plastic bits. too small of course, so he added in extra fabric. it is silk. it is NOT the same yellow.
Claire: Gotham Girl themed dress that wasn't intended as a costume, it's just a tennis dress that's in the right colors and patterns. also a hoodie that was originally a Batman hoodie and has an iron-on patch on top of the Batman logo. plus these cool boots she found
Helena: thought they were taking this seriously. is alternately laughing and annoyed. actually contacted a semi-professional cosplayer and commissioned a Huntress costume and appeared in multiple process videos, did a whole promotional photoshoot. she has won an award for it
Babs: carboard boxes that look sort of robot-y with a carefully painted Oracle face, part of a series of projects the library did in the lead-up to this charity event, where kids and teens could make their own costumes. and they wanted to make one for Babs
Alfred: the Batmobile. hand stitched. felt
#look i said something#batman#Maps is also there because the Mizoguchis wouldn't miss a party like this. Maps is Robin. Kyle is reluctantly Batman

You know, if I didn't have Nikia's canonverse job be a ranger on a snowy mountain, I probably would have done something along the lines of like, a blacksmith.
Mostly because it's cool as hell and would enable me to design my little blorbos custom weapons and jewelry.
So I did revisit the idea today while actively putting off anything more productive than a shower after work.
Specifically I've had those "if this was domain expansion what would it be?" Prompts where it's a sick ass picture of some sort of landscape and the next slide (on Tiktok, not even going to pretend) has a screenshot of some commenters sick ass lines.
And anyway, it brought to mind how I'd like to imagine my 'inner world' as like, a sea of stars. Similar to the mirror lake world of Tanjiro (I think? Haven't watched demon slayer) but just endless galaxies. And the ground is only indicated by glowing stardust at your feet like fog. Billowing and drifting by with every step.
This is going somewhere, I promise.
Anyway, I thought it'd be neat if there was a particular calling of blacksmithing where some people can create weapons or other objects perfectly in sync with a specific person. Lowkey Soul Reaper shit from Bleach (say what u will about the plot, Kubo designed sick ass hell shit left and right). And Nikia ends up finding out she's one of these people.
It's not a perfect system, of course, and rarely is someone's 'perfect' weapon like, a black blade from the start. You have to cultivate that shit.
But hers is an unexpectedly short blade, with a shattered edge. Like it was meant to be a full katana or kodachi blade but broke. And it is black, but not perfect. It almost looks like the night sky, stars scattered along the sides. It came to her in a dream and is actually exactly as it's meant to be. With the use of haki, it's full length is revealed as a sort of ghost blade. The hilt wrapped in braided silk and tied with hanging bells.
Maybe she even has a long range weapons. Torn between a bow that sings when fired and is waayyy too accurate or she makes her usual sniper rifle anyway and it's silent, no kickback unless she wants it. Just a little shit of a weapon, perfectly suited to her more deadly mischief.
Neato!
Anyway, she prefers to make jewelry but on special request, will make these custom "Spirit Weapons" that have unique properties suited to the user and basically no one else. There are people she won't make blades for, and Shanks is one of them cause his own blade is "very possessive, anything I make would need to be both an equal and a competitor. And Shanks only has one arm so..."
She has to sort of meditate with them and if they want that fucking weapon, they better play along. She has to sort of... Divine? Invite the spirit of their perfect weapon? They start off pretty sentient or haunted, like old cursed blades lol
Sometimes the blades are already black when she's done (usually older, very experienced customers) but usually not even close. She can also make other weapons but people usually only think to ask for a sword. Some would end up with a different, very unexpected weapon instead.
Thatch would probably try and ask for custom blades for himself, expecting something like his usual blades. But winds up with vicious, twirly blades. Izou doesn't expect anything but Nikia gifts him a special gun with a set of bullets, shockingly. Thatch's blades meant to be quick, cutting deep and leaving gaping wounds. Izou's shocked at how quiet his new gun is, and how far it shoots for a handgun.
Or something like that. Just fiddling with ideas lol
I thought it would be neat! I don't see a lot of blacksmiths specifically, and if the idea of a sullen, well-meaning part-time hostess part-time rescue ranger didn't enthrall me so much, I'd go with this!
#mittens muses#op oc nikia#whitebeard would also get one lol#ace doesnt need a weapon but hed get that brace i designed him ages ago

Western Gowns: An Overview
Definition and Styles Western gowns refer to elegant, often formal dresses originating from Western fashion traditions. These gowns are characterized by their intricate designs, flowing fabrics, and often elaborate embellishments. They come in various styles, each suited for different occasions.
Types of Western Gowns
Ball Gown: This style features a fitted bodice and a full, voluminous skirt, often used for formal events such as balls and galas. It exudes a fairy-tale-like elegance.
A-Line Gown: Named for its shape, which resembles the letter "A", this gown has a fitted bodice that gradually widens towards the hem. It's versatile and flattering for many body types.
Mermaid Gown: This gown is fitted through the bodice and hips, flaring out at the knees. It’s a popular choice for red carpet events and weddings due to its dramatic silhouette.
Sheath Gown: Known for its slim, straight cut that closely follows the body's contours, the sheath gown is sophisticated and modern, perfect for cocktail parties and semi-formal events.
Empire Waist Gown: This style features a raised waistline just below the bust, with the rest of the dress flowing down. It's a classic, elegant choice, often used in evening wear.
Historical Context Western gowns have evolved significantly over the centuries:
Medieval Period: Early gowns were simple tunics and long dresses made from wool or linen, often adorned with embroidery.
Renaissance: Gowns became more elaborate, with rich fabrics like silk and velvet, and intricate designs reflecting the wearer's social status.
Victorian Era: This period saw the introduction of crinolines and bustles, giving gowns a distinctive shape. Corsets were used to achieve a narrow waist.
20th Century: The silhouette of gowns varied dramatically, from the flapper dresses of the 1920s to the glamorous, full-skirted dresses of the 1950s, and the minimalist designs of the 1990s.
Occasions for Wearing Western Gowns
Weddings: Brides often wear lavish gowns, including styles like the ball gown and A-line gown. Bridesmaids and guests may also wear elegant gowns.
Proms: High school proms are traditional events where young women wear formal gowns, often choosing styles that reflect current fashion trends.
Red Carpet Events: Celebrities and public figures wear designer gowns at events such as the Oscars, Golden Globes, and film premieres.
Galas and Balls: Formal events and charity galas call for luxurious gowns, often adorned with sequins, beads, or lace.
Cocktail Parties: While slightly less formal, these events still often require elegant dresses, with the sheath gown being a popular choice.
Modern Trends Contemporary trends in Western gowns include sustainable fashion, with designers using eco-friendly fabrics and ethical production methods. Customization and personalization are also popular, allowing individuals to have gowns tailored to their specific tastes and body shapes.
Conclusion
Western gowns are a staple of formal and semi-formal wear in many cultures around the world. Their styles, rooted in a rich historical tradition, continue to evolve, reflecting changing tastes and values in fashion. Whether for a wedding, prom, or red carpet event, Western gowns offer a blend of elegance, sophistication, and timeless beauty.

Derek Rose Brindisi 40 Men’s Silk Pyjamas
I am pretty sure everyone who has the slightest interest in silk or satin pyjamas has seen this picture:
The infamous Brindisi 40, which haunts our pinterest boards with its striking boldness and lustrous beauty still to this day, and taunting us with its unattainability. Ever since the first time I laid eyes on them I had longed them, even though the style was out of print when I first discovered of its its existence. I went as far as to contact the Derek Rose customer service who told me they no longer had this style in their warehouse, and the two remaining retailers that had them in stock did not have my size. I thought I had lost all hope was lost until I randomly stumbled across a pair, in my size, on American ebay. So yeah, this pair is definitely special to me, like finally getting with my crush through my sheer determination.
But enough about my aggressive obsession with the Brindisi 40, you’d get plenty of that later.
The UK market for men’s satin or silk pyjamas, I daresay, is shit. You get a limited scope on offer, whether it be mass produced crap from Amazon (which I still sometimes buy, simply out of curiosity for the hope that I strike gold on some high quality cheap pairs) or luxury high-end designer brands with flashy designs and an even flashier price tag. And one of the oldest and most reputable companies in this high end market is Derek Rose.
I have actually wanted a pair of pyjamas from Derek Rose ever since I was a kid. I always thought of getting a pair as some end game for my quest for finding the perfect set of pyjamas, even though I now realised my thirst of more is excessive as I have boxes filled with sets of pyjamas that I will never again wear. So naturally I chose a pair which I will never ever get bored of, and I pray to god that I don’t.
Review
Look
I guess I should start with the look. The satin finish was very nice, and although I do not believe my home’s lighting does my pictures much justice, the opulence of the design is apparent. The lustre is not overbearing, but is rather unpretentious but still sharp even in the brightest lighting. If I was caught by house guests wearing these I will not be embarrassed.
The mother of pearl buttons are present as they are for every set in the Brindisi collection and they accessorise the shirt rather well, each giving their own lustrous qualities to the shirt and providing an ironic sense of formality to it. I know its kind of trending for some guys to wear pyjama shirts with an informal two piece suit nowadays but hell if I knew anything about fashion outside of the bedroom! I didn’t actually know this set came with a top button when I bought it, so I was pleasantly surprised. Aesthetically, top buttons of pyjamas are a bit too cumbersome for me but it does not hinder the set at all, but rather gives more options for those who enjoy a more traditional feel to their nightwear.
Usually it is the norm for pyjamas in the Brindisi collection to feature a self seeking magnetic fly but the Brindisi 40 is one of the older products in the collection and so it has a simple button-up fly. No biggie. I did also notice some design changes since for the more current Brindisi men’s collection where they no longer opted for 3 pockets but maintained the classic breast pocket (as seen in the Brindisi 88), of which I honestly prefer the latter.
There isn’t really much else to say for the look that I have not said to be honest. Personally the bold stripes and satin finish were what drew me to this set and I really don’t think newer striped pyjamas in the collection really gives off the same regal air that the Brindisi 40 possesses. I feel like it really combined all the things people loved about Derek Rose’s classic striped pyjamas with the contemporary style through the fit, as well as the luxury of silk that made this pair the one I wanted as my first from this esteemed company. I am definitely fanboy-ing a bit too hard here!
Feel
I’ve actually been fortunate to have the privilege of owning several pairs of silk pyjamas but this is the first time I have owned and worn mulberry silk. The quality between this pair and the pair I recieved from LilySilk was night and day. But of course, it has to be expected as they have drastically different price tags. The Brindisi 40′s silk is far less coarse against my skin than the silk from the 22 momme pair I got from LilySilk. I might have to revisit this post but I have actually ordered another pair of Mulberry silk pyjamas from a relatively new company and maybe I can give a more fair judgement of the difference in quality of Derek Rose’s pyjamas to their competitors that way. Also I cannot really judge the whole catalogue of LilySilk’s pyjamas through just this one experience so maybe I might invest in another pair in the future!
Despite not being very thick at all they are surprisingly warm. My biggest gripe with them is that, like all silk, they tend to crease quite easily and it really pains me to actually sleep in these as I will ruin their pristine look, but they are just so god damn comfy that I cannot help myself. I may have to learn how to iron silk properly just to save myself the trouble of dry-cleaning.
Overall I do think this pair has lived up to my expectations, which is pretty rare considering I have not actually been that impressed by silk pyjamas thus far. I don’t think I will get another pair from the Brindisi collection for the sake of my finances but maybe another set will encapsulate my mind like this set has one day. It has been such a long time since I have posted on here so this entry may have seemed rather long-winded and rant-y but I really hope it gets me back into the swing of sharing my passion of pyjamas with others and giving others a better informed decision when making a purchase on men’s nightwear. Do keep in mind I am a very picky person so if you are happy with the Tony & Candice pair you got from Amazon then power to you! I think I’ll leave the pictures for my Instagram.

Dimasi prefers protein fibres like wool and silk. She says they have a “natural intelligence” that makes them better to wear because they thermoregulate and don’t need to be washed frequently.
These materials used to be more common. In 1975 fabrics derived from fossil fuels like polyester, nylon and acrylic represented just 30% of the global fibre market. In 2021, that figure was 64%. By comparison in 2021, wool represented just 1% of the global fibre market and silk was just under 0.2%, although the total production of most fibres has increased significantly in that time.
“I do get mad when I see very expensive designer pieces made from poly crepe – it’s like they’re taking the piss out of the customer,” says Press. “People might say, ‘Well poly is durable,’ but for me it’s just nasty, sweaty plastic – and the only reason to add it to a garment is to save money.”
