chapter notes - matoba seiji
a compilation of all of midorikawa's chapter notes concerning matoba (as of volume 29)
all are from the official viz releases, translated by lillian olsen.
Chapters 23 - 26 - Inhuman Thing I didn't have a chance to write a story about Matoba until now due to page constraints or manga cycling issues in the magazine. I had fun when I finally got around to it. Matoba's appearance means Natori's hardships become more obvious. Natori settled upon his current philosophy after a lot of reflection. But then he sees Natsume wrestling with the same choices and slogging through the same place he used to be, and it's both amusing and frustrating at the same time for him. Natsume might realize this and not be able to presume so much on his kindness. Natsume and Natori are left with a problem, so l hope to take my time drawing them dealing with it.
Volume 9 (General afterword) I enjoyed drawing a bit about Matoba. He has several titles. He’s the organizer of the assembly of exorcists, so he’s called “Chairman” during the meetings. He’s the young head of the family from a regular human perspective, and known as the leader of his clan to yokai. Natsume has been more relaxed lately, so it’s very fun to draw something tense like this once in a while. I’d like to write thoroughly about exorcists some time when I have the opportunity. Seeing Matoba and Natori side by side here, they’re clearly eccentrics. I’m relieved that Natsume seems normal by comparison.
Chapters 52 - 54 - Behind the Chains Natsume is now able to face a variety of things. But I also feel that the distance between him and Natori grows each time they encounter one another. They see the same things and hope for the same outcome, but because their paths are a little different, it's hard for them to take action when they're together. It's a strange feeling. I'm sure Natori wants to remain Natsume's ally, and Natsume wants the same with Natori. I'm happy I got to draw more about Matoba, too. Whereas Natori tries to do what's right and is afraid of making a mistake, I think Matoba is the kind of person who doesn't fear making mistakes.
Chapter 77 - The Two Rings This was another story I had always wanted to do, but the timing never worked out, so I was very happy to get to it now. When I'm drawing Natsume, I always agonize over his dialogue and pick his words carefully. But when I'm drawing the Matoba clan, I don't have to think about the impression they're making, and I just use words that pop up in my head. Mr. Natori is somewhere in between. It's always a bit refreshing to draw the exorcists. I hope people form their opinions of Mr. Matoba based on what's on the page. In good ways and bad, he's a character who lies but is also uninhibited.
Special Episode 17 - A Hand Extended They let me do another episode of Natori as a high school student. There was another anecdote I wanted to include, but it wouldn't fit, no matter how hard I tried to rearrange things. Still, I'm happy I could depict more of Natori and Matoba's relationship. Sometimes you can't come to an understanding with a person, but once you become aware of your own feelings, you can often begin to be more objective. Then you start to see aspects of the person that change your mind, which is natural. But unlike Natsume, Natori can be stubborn and won't allow his feelings to change. It was interesting to see how Natori would feel about the aloof and unwavering Matoba.
Special Episode 19 - An Abandoned Station in the Rain With 16 pages, the plot could have felt too similar to other Special Episodes, so I decided to do a simple story just about running into someone unexpected. It was fun showing Matoba being himself. Mr. Matoba knows yokai who live in a slightly different world from the one Natsume knows, and Nyanko Sensei knows both worlds. I'd like to do more stories about the two of them.
Chapters 92 - 94 - The House of Promises I have a memory of some boys climbing the gate of the town hall to pick some loquats at the end of spring and getting scolded. I made it seem like spring when the chapter appeared in the magazine, but then I heard that loquats ripen in early summer, so my older sister helped me race to redraw the clothing into something more summery before the graphic novel release. I enjoyed drawing the exorcists. Mr. Natori just can't catch a break and Mr. Matoba has many things going for him, but he often gets shut out. They don't really get along, and they're skeptical of each other even when real empathy is extended. Natsume is always at least trying to listen, so conversations are easier with him present. No matter what, Mr. Natori is older, and Mr. Matoba is younger. End of story. When I include the exorcists, there are all these dilemmas and convolutions that make things complicated and fun to draw. It feels fresh to me. I get nostalgic for the first time Natsume and Mr. Natori met when they're together. Their bond is getting deeper, but it was easier before for Mr. Natori to casually invite Natsume on outings. When you know someone a long time, there are more things to say, but sometimes, just as many things remain unsaid.
Chapters 103 - 104 - Where Vessels Lie in Slumber* I was so happy to work on a longer story for once. My head starts filling up with what to do next while I'm still working on the current episode. when I'm in one-shot mode. But being able to linger on a story arc reminded me of the excitement I felt back when I first wanted to be a manga artist. I still have a lot of storylines I'd prefer not to cut short, so I hope I get more opportunities like this. I've wanted to do this particular story for a long time, but. I feel like it could only be done now because of how Natsume's currently feeling. I hope you can pick up on how Natori and Matoba's relationship changes subtly depending on the situation, and that you get a feel for their solidarity as exorcist peers. It was so fun drawing everything I wanted to include: Natsume's faith in his friends; Natori's belief that he can still offer help even as an exorcist; Matoba, who's sometimes prevented from action because he knows and sees too much; Tanuma, who's surely able to help, but is unable to accompany Natsume; the cats protecting their secret; Nyanko Sensei. And of course there were even more things I wanted to expand on, so I'll take my time working them out.
*The first three chapters of this arc are in the previous volume and there's not enough in the other note for me to include.
#natsuyuu.txt#natsume yuujinchou#natsume's book of friends#matoba seiji#horrible exorcists#the one from volume 9 is my favorite#'what weirdos. thank god natsume is normal.'#well that and house of promises but that one mostly just makes me ill#i don't think the part of portrait arc that's in v30 says much about him#and i have no idea what the v31 afterwords say so let's check back this time next year. maybe#afterwords

Listened to 3 today instead of 2 like I planned! Worth it. Anyways, welcome back, yada, yada, I’m here again YIPEE
MAG 52: exceptional risk
Oh shit Robert Montauk is back. the guy who visited him was Maxwell Rayner and I did write down from previous episodes he was like a defrocked Pentecostal minister (hell he do???) and had that cult grow around him. Also the last name Rayner was mentioned in The Piper, Joseph Rayner tags or something. The whole, bulbs flickering and crappy water, at least my assumption, seems to be like in response. I’m assuming the thing that murdered Maxwell which then scared the shit out of his daughter in A Fathers Love and possibly killed her mom. I think Robert did something to try and get rid of that creature which is Maxwell came and did his ominous speech or whatever
MAG 53: crusader
Gertrude!!! No notes on this episode but I know eyes are like a super common theme in the magnus archives, I’ve seen some vague fanart so I’ll keep an eye for that. Sorry.
MAG 54: Still Life
Daniel Rawlings was one of the people who disappeared in Anglerfish near Old Fishmarket Close. The thing that was in his basement was also described very similarly to the thing in the alleyway. Swaying motion, a monotone voice, repeating the same sentence again, and again. Not only that Daniel disappeared the same year as Sarah Baldwin, who we were already, unfortunately, introduced to. I know he has like a completely different appearance but I dunno. It’s creepy. ALSO, there were those 2 men with cockney accents and when Jon got delivered those packages in season 1, Martin described them with cockney accents. So I’m assuming they are the same.
MAG 55: Pest Control
Jane Prentiss mention. Thought we’d be done with her when she’s now ash but I guess not 💀 (<- Jane) anyways, apparently John Amherst got an appearance. Doing some calculating, I think him in MAG 55 was before Taken Ill. I think. One thing I noticed looking back at Taken Ill was that Nicole didn’t want to touch the bell because there was this oily residue on it, the same oily residue on the door to his house when Jordan knocked on it. Also the landlord from Jane’s statement is here. Did not expect him to sacrifice himself. Clearly he knows a lot and maybe knew what that “wasps” nest was all about. He had that scar too. So far I can’t find anything connecting with that scar but everything (everyone) is going up in flames in this podcast I swear.
MAG 56: Children of the Night
I was actually going to end this post at Pest Control but I saw TREVOR was giving this statement so I had to listen. Anyways. Uh. Rest in peace that human he killed 🫡. The lady that had spiders come out was interesting. Lot of spiders in this podcast.
Also Jon seems really stressed like he needs a nice nap and maybe some like book to calm him down. I jumped and he wasn’t even yelling at me 😭 personally I would not let that slide. also Martin mentioned his mom having problems so he dropped out and I think his moms problems were based in the supernatural in some way. No basis for that.
One other thing, I saw that the title of this episode is like…slightly similar to the thing Gertrude referenced in Crusaders. “Those who sing the night “children of the night”. I guess only night is mentioned and it could be a coincidence but I’m keeping that in mind just in case.
Anyways that’s all my thoughts!! I see the next episode is something about space. It is currently 10:12 PM and it’s pitch black so I’m definitely not listening to that tonight.
#the magnus archives#tma#tma podcast#zabala0z thoughts#literally going insane guys#every moment#im just like “is this a connection?????#also I’m getting a new keyboard for my like decade old family Mac computer so I can finally write my digital notes on the computer#instead on the phone like a person who is testing life#but I gotta know guys#I need to know all the lore I need to know what this story is about#can’t back out now#got like 20 pages of notes on google docs#well some notes. some are details from episodes that might be useful later#but I gotta get to the ending or else I will literally die

Boys Planet Episode 3-4 Recaps: Kill This Love
If you’re following the MNET show Boys Planet, you probably know by now that the editors are extremely irritating. For a song “mission” like this, they show 2-3 minute montages of some of the teams practicing, then fast forward to show time passing, then make it look like the performance will start any moment, and then have a lengthy flashback before we finally get to see the performance.
So, I made a main recap that takes you through episodes 3 and 4 in a linear way, but then when it comes to focusing on each team, I’ll put all those thoughts in a separate post so you can keep the storylines straight. This post is on the Kill This Love teams.
The Teams
K team:
Leader: Lee Hwan Hee
Real leader: General Park Gunwook
Other members: Hong Keon Hee, Han Yoo Seop, and Jang Yeo Joon.
I’m going to assume you recognize Hwanhee (with the silvery hair), though I’ll remind you briefly that he’s the main vocalist of Up10tion. I also assume you recognize Gunwook by now, so here are the other three:
Left to right, that’s Han Yoo Seop, Hong Keon Hee, and Jang Yeo Joon.
Han Yoo Seop (18) and Jang Yeo Joon (17): Both Jellyfish trainees, they both used to be in 3 stars and have fallen to 2 stars. Yoo Seop is ranked 71st, and Yeo Joon is ranked 60th.
Here are the Jellyfish trainees in their GBTB audition:
Left to right: Jang Yeo Jun, (Park Hyun Been - not in this group), Han Yu Seop, Park Gun Woo
Hong Keon Hee: He’s 18, he auditioned with Nunu Nana, and while he’s ranked pretty low (he’s at 87th place) and overtly ignored by MNET editors, he has been a 3 star trainee the whole time. And he’s got a cute smile!
Here’s NuNu NaNa:
G team:
Leader: auburn haired center Zhang Hao
Other members: Keita, Seok Matthew, Wang Zi Hao, Min, and Chen Kuan Jui
I’m going to assume you know Keita, Seok Matthew, and Zhang Hao by now, but let me remind you about Min, Wang Zi Hao, and Chen Kuan Jui.
Min auditioned with Anthonny and Haruto in Glitch Mode. He’s from Thailand, he’s 22, he’s signed to Wake One, he has been three stars the whole time, and he moved up in the rankings from 80th place at the end of ep 1 to his current rank of 65.
Wang Zi Hao
His audition wasn’t aired, but it was pretty good. He did Veil by Lay.
He’s 21 years old, and has moved down from 29th place to 38th place in the rankings even while he’s moved up from 3 stars to All Stars. Apparently, his special is Krumping, which he showed the judges in a segment that we’ve only seen a few seconds of.
You probably remember Chen Kuan Jui. He’s that extremely flexible guy.
He’s from Taipei, he’s 22, he auditioned with Tiger Inside, he’s moved up in the rankings from 54 to 30, and he was a 4 star at first but has dropped to 3 stars, which can happen.
Team Selection:
We saw both teams being selected in this case, so we know that the G-team was the second G-team to be formed, while the K-team was the 6th (of 7) teams to be formed. Keita chose the members of G group, while Hwanhee let Gunwook bully him into picking the members of K-group.
We begin 53:51 in to episode 3.
The two Kill This Love teams face off in a shared practice room. Hilariously, auburn haired center Zhang Hao interviews in his excellent if halting Korean, “Park Gunwook is scary. He’s young, but he’s scary. Even though we have one more member, I feel like we will lose.”
The Global trainees say that they will ask the Korean trainees later about the lyrics (and how to pronounce them or what they mean, I guess?) and Hwanhee jokes that the lyrics are “I kill you.” Aww, Hwanhee, you’re trying to be funny. Bless!!
There’s a brief intermission in which we see who is on which team, and then we’re back to the teams.
Part Selection
As usual, the different parts (main vocal, sub vocal, etc) are dramatically imbalanced, with the “killing part” getting 44 second of center time. I’d make some sort of comment about MNET but I think we all already know.
On the G-side, all of them want the killing part, of course, but the team unanimously chooses Keita, and I think that’s probably wise. Then we have one of those sympathetic MNET edits where we watch Matthew try for each part and keep losing out. But I mean, Zhang Hao sounded perfect in his “audition” for main vocal, and Wang Zi Hao brings more color and personality to subvocal 1.
On the K-side, General Gunwook has A Plan.
Gunwook has planned for Hwanhee to be the main vocal -- of course -- and for Keon Hee to be the rapper, with the other two teammates being the other vocals. All comes to pass as Gunwook has ordained. Han Yu Seop is a little sad that he couldn’t be main vocal, but I’ll put in that I didn’t think he did the most spectacular job with the main vocal part in GBTB, and Hwanhee is an actual main vocal in a real (nugu) group. So I think it was the right call.
A staff member asks Jang Yeo Joon if their team has “two suns,” and Yeo Joon is like, no, we only have one sun, and it’s Gunwook.
Since Gunwook planned it all in advance, K-group decides all its parts quickly and is ready to start rehearsing. G-group decides to delegate a bit -- Chen Kuan Jui can learn the choreo while they finish figuring out the parts.
So he gets comfortable and begins watching the choreo, and somehow, learns it, just by watching it, like some kind of savant, while stretching his legs to a full 180°. Then he’s able to teach the choreo to the rest of his team, so pretty soon G-group catches up to K. Hwan Hee interviews, “Chen Kuan Jui is an OP [overpowered] character.” Yeah, strong agree on that.
Gunwook thinks it would be “really fun” to beat G-group, so his team decides to do big strong movements in their choreo. Hwanhee openly admits, “I’m just Gunwook’s puppet.”
The Performance
Episode 3, 2:04:14
The judges say they’re excited for both teams’ performances. Clearly, G-group is extra excited for them:
The audience is excited, too.
The teams introduce themselves:
Hwanhee: “I’m the oldest but I act like the youngest.”
Gunwook: “I’m captain Maverick, Top Gun Wook.” He salutes, and his hand is shaking.
Hong Keon Hee: “완전히, 굳건히, 왕건히, 홍건 히” (wanjeonhi, gudgeonhi, wang-geonhi, hong-keon hi), which is a play on words. It could be translated “completely, firmly, firmly, completely.” But also, the last three syllables are actually his name. Cute!
Poor Jang Yeo Jun and Han Yu Seop don’t even get to introduce themselves.
MNET never shows all six members of the G-group standing still together, but I was able to composite in a picture of Min with Microsoft Paint, and it came out pretty seamless, right?
It’s almost as if Min got to perform on the stage with them!
Zhang Hao: “My face is the best, my skills are the best, and my charisma is the best, Zhang Hao!”
Keita: “An all-rounder rapper is here, Keita!”
Wang Zi Hao: “I’m the dance Wang Zi Hao.” (Wang means king)
Matthew, while his soul leaves his body: “I love you. I want you. I’m Seok Matt-chu.” (Chu is a kiss sound.)
Chen Kuan Jui and Min don’t get to introduce themselves, but it’s fine because the editors used the time to show us the judges laughing at Matthew’s joke and I guess that’s more important.
Minhyun asks Zhang Hao about how their rehearsal went, and….
At 2:06:00, we see the groups in rehearsal. The judges ask Hwanhee about how they ended up facing off against this excellent G-group team, and Hwanhee says “I thought someone needed to compete with them,” which is a good answer, even if the judges don’t accept it. Gunwook admits that he “encouraged” Hwanhee, which is one way to describe what happened.
The judges complement Keita on his excellent choice of team members, and rightfully so.
The judges ask if anyone was unhappy with the part they got, and either pick up on Matthew’s discomfort, or get a producer message telling them to ask him about it. Matthew just acknowledges that he’s a bit disappointed with his part, but in a polite way.
They sing the song, and they’re completely perfect.
The main vocal judge addresses Chen Kuan Jui, saying “You never do it as you practiced. Not even once,” says and I think the translation was off? Like maybe it should have been something more like, “You don’t come across like someone who is just practicing”? But I don’t know. The judge is in fact complimenting him, as he concludes, “I loved your attitude of doing as if you were on stage.”
Kuan Jui is so happy to be praised, he looks like he might cry.
Maybe it’s the headband changing the shape of his face, or the emotion showing in his expression, but I feel like this is the best he’s looked all show, or at least, the most appealing.
Then the teacher tells Matthew not to worry because his part shows off his charms, resolving that storyline. Oh no, there’s no storyline now. If only some new drama would begin.
Suddenly, the male judge brings up that he noticed that Min was doing a few lines that weren’t assigned to him. Turns out that Keita, the main rapper, had given Min a few of his lines, because Min’s part as sub-rapper was so small. You guys. Keita = good egg. We see a clip of it, and it’s Jennie’s part that goes, “Feelin' like a sinner, It's so fire with him I go boo, ooh,” and oh no, his pronunciation isn’t that good. To be fair, this is an early rehearsal and he certainly could still have worked on it.
The judges say that he can’t keep those lines -- to make the judging fair, they say. Which makes no sense. The teams are unbalanced in number as it is, 5 to 6. So why are you being precious about the line distribution? But they are, and at least this means that there’s a new drama.
Min is really heartbroken over losing those lines, and can’t stop himself from crying. The other trainees all kindly tell him that “everybody here understands how you feel.”
Zhang Hao and Chen Kuan Jui end up sitting with him for a bit on the couch. Min apologizes for being so greedy. You get the feeling he’s having a lot of trouble communicating in Korean, but he’s Thai, so it’s the closest thing they have to a shared language.
Zhang Hao says, “We’re all greedy. We all tried to get the killing part.” Min says, in what must have been very broken Korean, “can I try for the killing part again?” I say it must have been very broken because Zhang Hao immediately replies, “You want to try for the killing part again?” which must have been just a confirmation that that is what Min said. Then Min starts to say “And if I don’t get the part this time, I’ll…” and Kuan Jui finishes for him, “I’ll understand.”
If you just read the subtitles and don’t really think about it, you might think that they were encouraging him to do this, but once you realize they’re literally just trying to communicate, it makes more sense. Because, of course, they are not endorsing this plan, because they can’t change parts at this point -- it would throw the whole performance into chaos. They don’t say that, though -- they just tell him that they can’t do that, gently, and he doesn’t push too hard. And Zhang Hao says, “Even if your part is very short, let’s find the best way to show it.” Surely, they can do that much, right? (Spoiler: Apparently they can't and they kind of don't.)
I really loved this conversation -- Hao is so empathetic and mature, with the right mix of firmness and gentleness, not giving Min false hope but also making him feel seen and understood. And Kuan Jui does well, too. It’s just nice to see.
At their dress rehearsal, the judges talk about how their eyes kept getting drawn to Min’s abs (he is wearing a cropped blazer), and add that Min’s singing part is mostly doubling, but somehow it ends up feeling like he has “so many parts.” Min seems happy hearing that. BTW, Min’s name looks cute in Korean: 민
And what do you know? They’ve resolved all of this group’s storylines but one: Will they win or lose?
The performance starts, and their vocals are great, their rapping is great, their dancing is great, I mean, they’re great. There’s a part where Wang Zi Hao and Matthew harmonize and it sounds fantastic. They also double their vocals up here and there to give more power to them. I wish Matthew had helped his teammates more with their English pronunciation, since it’s one area that could be improved. Also, poor Min is literally behind someone most of the time. You really can barely see the poor guy. But overall, fantastic, basically no notes. The idea of drawing on their faces with bright red lipstick right at the end, as if they were scratching open their skin -- it sounds kind of dumb but it worked and I think it would have worked even more from a distance. Good job, team G!
At 2:15:57, we flip over to K-team, and head into flashback mode. K-team is at dance rehearsal with the kindly LipJ and when they dance as a group, she compliments their exaggerated dance style. When it’s Hwanhee’s turn to dance almost by himself, he kind of just gives up, looking embarrassed. When he’s done, LipJ, acting like a human being instead of a literal demon who came to earth to terrorize young dancers, tells him it’s ok, she could tell he was just very nervous. Poor Hwanhee has been yelled at for his dancing a few too many times, and we are seeing the end result of a long line of psycho dance teachers -- a really talented singer and a sweet guy who get so scared when he dances that he basically can’t dance at all. It’s almost as if that’s not the best way to help someone improve.
At the big group rehearsal where the trainees all gave feedback, Hwanhee is chosen as the trainee who needed the most work. Later on, Hwanhee apologizes to his team and says he’s going to really try his best. Gunwook says he’s going to help him more, and his other teammates encourage him. At dress rehearsal, we find out that he has added a big impressive ad lib at one point, but it just… doesn’t sound fantastic. He says his throat is in bad condition. I don’t know, maybe a lower note that you can really hit?
Anyway, at 2:20:40 they come out and it’s time for the performance to begin. Here's the link to the full cam.
They also look great. Overall, it’s really good, though it can’t beat Keita's team. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think that Gunwook is that great at rapping, as charismatic and charming as he is. Han Yu Seop sounded really nervous -- in fact, all of them sounded a bit shaky. Hwanhee’s voice is so powerful and his vocal color is so distinct -- I so wish he wasn’t a bit under the weather. His big ad lib was just a bit cringe for me. Oh, my heart breaks. This wasn’t a bad performance -- it just wasn’t excellent the way that G-group’s was.
The voting totals come in, and...
Main Vocal K Lee Hwanhee 91 G Zhang Hao 197
Sub Vocal 1 K Han Yoo Seop 5 G Wang Zi Hao 72
Sub Vocal 2 K Jang Yeo Joon 42 G Seok Matthew 121
Main Rapper K Hong Keon Hee 60 G Keita (also killing part) 151
Sub Rapper 1 K Park Gunwook (also killing part) 158 G Chen Kuan Jui 33
Sub Rapper 2 G only: Min 12
G Group wins, 586 to 356.
I always feel bad for the trainees who get like 5 or 10 votes -- it has to hurt a lot. I couldn’t put myself through something like this. But G team is so happy to win!
Yay!! They were so good and it’s nice to see G-team pick up a win.
K-team is consoled by their friends.
In an interview, a staff member asks General Gunwook, “If you could go back in time, would you make the same choices?” And General Gunwook replies, “Yes. Even if I could go back in time, I’d still compete with the Kill This Love G-team." He begins to cry, and I’m reminded that as tall and mature as he looks and seems, he’s just an 18 year old kid.
“I really… I knew our chance of winning was slim. Let’s meet again as a team. I’ll make sure we win next time. I’m sorry.” Aww, Gunwook. 잘 했어. (You did great.)
And that brings us to the end of the Kill This Love review.

I’m fully watching the ravening war episode 3 (how do you like being episode three’d brennan???) so spoilers in my free flowing brainworms under cut
current time: 1:54:03, just as the battle it seems has drawn to a close and I’m just like.
First off the deranged part of my brain is like ‘well I don’t know the rules of Calorum super well but you’re going to be hunted so you’re gonna wanna burn your trail immediately. I’m not even talking identity I mean like someone’s gonna get some hounds or whatever food equivalent to hounds is, so purge your scent immediately.’
And I think I watched that show where a guy proves survivalist techniques and how to track and find people in the woods (may seem batshit in concept, but people get lost in the woods a lot and if there’s a lot of woods around you it’s good to learn just. Disperse knowledge of finding lost people through the general population.) so my brain is like. “You are not hidden if you can hear them reacting to the crime scene. the reinforcements are gonna hunt you down and kill you.
God the parallels to ‘how they tried to murder King Amethar’ are so fucking perfect, I am desperate to hear how intentionally they setup basically the same fucking ambush. (Lou’s line as Amethar commanding them to move the tree in the beginning of that combat is so fucking good. If they ever animate any D20 series, which I know they have no intention of doing do to the logistical nightmare of it all. I need to see “clear the road” done its justice. it’s fucking literal King Shit. Lou plays so many affable characters, good lord his commanding and war-weary King is fucking masterful.
Also Colin Provolone’s “just some guy” attitude is one of my favourite character archetypes of all time. I’m not kidding, one of my all time favourite characters of my own to play is a dude named Kyle who worked at a gas station. “just a dude” who happens to be really competent due to a deeply practical nature and a generally realistic assessment of his own skills. Who also finds himself abruptly in over his head when someone who doesn’t realize the difference of status just kinda picks up a stray normal guy and elevates them thinking it’s totally normal and consequence free, and the normal guy abruptly realizes he liked being a normal guy a lot more than being a high status guy.

So … I was tagged by @windsweptinred
Thanks and let’s see how it goes 😅
Last song: immortal music - aurora xv 54
That’s the last song I heard from my cycling playlist. I need music when I commute to work. Both to wake up and to come down. 😆
Currently watching: I’m currently rewatching Grimm and One Piece during the week (but only 1-2 episodes of each per day… I’m too old for being tired constantly during work 🙈)
This weekend I plan to watch The Witcher season 3 and try to get my hands on Silo 😁
Currently reading: … I have currently 10-12 books in In various states of reading laying around. The last one I started reading is "The priory of the orange tree" by Samantha Shannon. However, I have only just started and haven't really formed an opinion yet....
Current Obsessions: The most obvious is still Sandman since last year. I'm still surprised by the ferocity with which this obsession has gripped me to be honest 😅
Let's see if Good Omens 2 will be somewhat similar
Any time that isn't filled with reading Sandman fanfiction and work and "social obligations" is being divided relatively equally right now with
- perfecting my Kardemummabullar recipe (I was in Stockholm in June and came back with tips 😏)
- tweaking my black sesame ice cream recipe
(Luckily I have nice colleagues who test all of my cooking and baking test batches 😆)
- I had to change my travel journal this year because the old one was full and now I'm sitting in front of my new one for weeks trying to draw a design for the cover that I like (I just don't like any... they look nice but they’re not what I want?) and the cover for my big holiday this year (a 2 week road trip in Nova Scotia!!!! I'm so looking forward to it!!!)
I think that’s all 😊
Thanks again for tagging me…
Since I’m quite bad with this whole tagging I’ll just nominate the last three blogs that followed me:
@academicblorbo @karalynlovescake aaaannndd … @tout-ce-qui-se-regarde
Have fun if you want to 😜

Hey darling, just wanted to start off this note with a quick psa that there is currently some anon on ao3 going around stealing works! None of them have been yours so far but it’s good to keep a lookout.
I’ll take ur list and see what I can do. It’ll have to be a seperate ask I’m afraid cause I need time to think. (It might heavily feature Ingrid rn that one episode she did in Norwegian is giving me butterflies)
Also yes I really liked it. I talked about it so much one of my friends thought it was an actual short story from a book. I need to learn how to shut up or lie better cause I went so red. Idt she believed me one bit but thank god I was sick during the aitana fic release cause I would’ve been feral.
Here’s the test link! https://bdsmtest.org/select-mode Its up to you, you can pick if you want the shorter or longer one, I did the longer one.

Hi sweetheart, thank you for the heads up. I doubt that it would happen cause not many people read my works and they are not that popular, they are posting like the fics of the ones everyone know. But still thank you for the heads up.
Is okay you can send me as many ask as you want or DM too whatever you want and feel comfortable doing, i'm always happy seeing your messages 😊

Ok, so I found out a way to watch the first episode of the anime (don’t ask questions) and this just makes me want to talk about the first chapter (and a little bit of chapters 2 & 3)
I hate to say it, but everyone talking about the pacing is right, it isn’t the best, and I think that the real answer ps for why lie with the manga. I’m not gonna say ‘it has to be a one to one from the manga’ but there were better ways to do this. Also I’m not gonna say that ‘this is how I would do it’, I just want to explain why I think the first chapter was so good (and by doing so, saying why it should have been the only chapter used for the first episode).
The opening with a hopeful Haru giving a recap of all the important info to understand that is great (Starting the chapter with haru already freaking out probably wouldn’t work in an anime so we’re just gonna ignore the pretty art). It’s very matter of fact and quick that it doesn’t feel like the exposition doesn’t drag. And the fact of ‘showing’ explicitly while also showing the first anti youkai powers keeps the pacing going quick. It also introduces us to several of the characters personalities (even more than what is obviously shown). Sano not wanting to get involved (and maybe even avoiding using his powers incorrectly), pathetic Haru, Tamao being a bit of a little punk, and mujina being a character we make suffer I mean punk loser. Having this makes the walk up to the school feel like it takes time while also giving us needed info (aka exposition is quick, while current events feel important and take up the right amount of time).
Now Haru seeing the school is also great. We have an efficient shot of the school, Principal surprising him, the air is light.
Also Haru abuse (a series stable)!
Now a great joke is Haru opening the door. (Honestly I didn’t mind the hyping up but-) And we just get a wide shot of the room, Quick shot where we focus on the speech bubbles and widen i view to see the rest of the class. THAN a blank stare with Haru, and the door sides shut quickly! Jokes are all about having only the important info and set up. It happens so quick (only necessary info) and has good set up (meeting the boys before school and Haru hyping himself up). Hell, only Sano notices Haru because of how quick it is. WHICH leads to a second half joke with how normal the students while Haru freaks out.
Than we get more Haru abuse and the second showing of the anti youkai powers. And we quickly push Haru back into the room to anxiously deal with no real reward.(Gonna skip any parts that aren’t interesting even tho the are still important to the pacing)
(If you did acknowledge the pretty art opening, we can even add some of that meta jokes the series has and even make the op make more sense-)
Sano helps Haru out, with him getting pulled out feeling impactful (and it is when you think about chapter 54 omg) only for Haru’s clothes ripping. And we get Sano’s youkai explanation. Principal sets up a joke by giving some reward (and showing how shady he can be). Haru not showing anybody gives us a mystery the audience what’s solved making us want to watch more! (And having Mame watch it, especially with his life, makes further sets future events)
Haru takes attendance, takes notice of Sano’s profile, and gets ignored. Hajita is explained away (and actually feels like he has a reason to not show up and not feel like it was a useless line. Like just have Hajita show up with a bang and not Mame explaining anything until after he walks in-)
The mystery is brought back up, and some minor conflict that doesn’t feel like a big ‘mission’ that would take up more time. Mame shows off his powers (and how cute he is, the mascot of our hearts) whole also paying off him spying on the principal and haru.
Haru also builds up towards Sano and Haru’s future in this chapter. Haru annoying Sano, Haru getting distracted so we know he is actually obsessed with uniforms (I know they wanted to down play the whole fetish I just wish they didn’t). Sano also tries to be helpful with giving advice, giving a ride, and beating up Haru for Meme (my babyboy!) We also get pay off for this with Sano beating up Haru.
Haru also shows off his skill with running (especially when it involves his fetish). We get our third use of anti youkai powers (RULE OF THREE)!
Haru, Sano, the teachers, and us finding out about Haru’s powers, and Haru wanting to keep it a secret give the rest of the series some intrigue. And having Sano agree again shows how deep down he really does care!
Also we get, arguably, 5 jokes that are in character and show off some of the famous duo’s personalities.
And finally, we reach the make or break it jokes, so intertwined with the uniforms AND rapid that if you haven’t laughed/enjoyed the manga so far, you might start thinking of dropping it (don’t).
This chapter is really tight! The jokes are quick, the plot only revolves around the literal premise of the series (sailor uniform loving scaredy cat pathetic man teaches at a school of generally normal acting youkai students), we get info about characters when it’s important, no overwhelming amount of introductions, we even have something to get us hooked outside of the slice of life comedy premise (an overarching idea about Haru’s powers being a secret only the staff and Sano know about!)
But because we have three different chapters mixed into one, some of the punchlines feel weird in the anime. NOT BAD, just some feel a bit off. Mame coming to get Beniko without the bonding moment, Haru wanting good luck and being kinda cool with youkai students so quickly, not dealing with Haru’s uniform deal and being played down (even tho it’s the reason he even get into ‘scary mode’), and the timeline of when everything was happening all feel a bit off
(kinda felt equally too fast and too slow with what the chose to let breath, gloss over, and not include)
And this is literally a supernatural slice of life comedy, we have to make sure the jokes land/have another joke ready if the one before fails, and see a slice of their lives
I feel like it would be better be if the Beniko/Hajita plots weren’t in the first episode (I actually like those two plots being in the same episode, it would make a good first half and second half, since chapter 2 & 3 really flow well and when Haru goes on his rant we can build up more to the Hajita apology.) They seem like a good plot for a the second or third episode. (Ok sorry seems like I did explain what I would do for a bit there sorry)
Anyway…
Honestly, a lot of ‘episodic’ comedy manga get episodes mixed together so I’m not surprised, just wished they divided them differently.
So now let me talk about some positives and some of my other thoughts on the first episode
*・゜゚・*:.。..。.:*・'(☆)'・*:.。. .。.:*・゜゚・* It was better than what I thought I would be…but not a good as what I let myself hope it could. OBVIOUSLY this is just a first episode, so my thoughts can obviously change, but this is what I got right now.
I really like the music! The OP and ED were amazing!!! I love them sooooo much. The ED reminded a bit of Yuukei Yesterday from kagepro, and I love that song. It was very wholesome and calming, made me want to hear an english version so I could sing along. The OP was great, I loved the chaotic vibes. The ending was great with them being scolded. Very *chef’s kiss*
Outside of that I was a bit disappointed. I DONT HATE IT, but I wish it would be better.
I’ll probably talk about it again after it all airs, so let’s all wait and see!
Also, here are some screenshots I love! ♡
the first chapter of yohaji is the best first chapter I have ever read of any manga. the way it perfectly introduces the whole premise of the manga (a pathetic scardycat starts teaching at a school that is filled to the brim with supernatural students and faculty) is obviously great but HOW IT SHOWS OFF ALL THE CHARACTERS!!!
the way that haru is first shown to be a very precious so full of promise and excitement for a new job yet also being so girlfailure (I just want to pick him up and shake him).
Sano his probably most important relationship in the whole manga (im literally planning on making a ramble/essay about that) shows how he has a kind heart but is also a total sadistic! My boy is trying so hard not to show his real self of being a sweet little demon child and I love him♡♡♡♡♡ the way he totally bodies haru destroys his not even truly established relationship with the rest of the class and than leaves with a 'I don't kink shame' is GOLD!
Love how when we finally see haru's special interest we sano and mame all get to experience the immediate dread of what it is only to reassured by haru (and the manga in the same volume) that it isn't anything sexual or related to the individual wearing it
I love how EVEN IN THE FIRST CHAPTER YOU CAN TELL THERE IS MORE TO ALL OF THIS. like who is the principal and his relationship with haru's family? Or what is with haru's powers? How is the wet paper towel of a man going to deal with these students in the future? AAAAAAAaaaaaa!!!
Love this manga omg

Do This Before You Make Any Huge Changes In Your Life
In this episode of the Relaxed Male podcast, we dive into the significance of altering our thoughts in order to improve our lives. Our thoughts shape our reality, emotions, and outcomes. It's common for people to believe that making a big change, like switching jobs or losing weight, will automatically bring them happiness. However, that's not the case. Our happiness and overall results are determined by our thoughts. As we begin our discussion, I want to take a moment to express our gratitude to all the new listeners who have joined us recently. While our view count may have decreased, I'm not too worried since it's summertime and people have different priorities.
However, I admit that I occasionally feel concerned about the numbers. But when I look at our unique downloads, I see spikes, indicating that people are still interested in our content. This serves as a reminder that our thoughts have a significant impact on our results, which ties perfectly into our topic for today. Instead of dwelling on the lower downloads, I realize it's more productive to focus on creating valuable content that truly resonates with our audience. I would rather have 10,000 dedicated listeners who genuinely appreciate our show than 10,000 downloads from people who don't find it worthwhile.
So, before you embark on any major changes in your life, take a moment to reflect on how you think about the circumstances that are causing discontent. Whether it's your physical appearance or finding a partner, changing your thoughts is the first step towards achieving the life you desire. Losing weight rapidly to feel attractive to others might not address the deeper issues of self-worth and insecurity. Regardless of being overweight or physically fit, how one perceives oneself influences how they present themselves to others. Making changes, such as losing weight, doesn't guarantee happiness, as both thin and overweight individuals face their own unique challenges. Similarly, acquiring wealth or switching careers might not bring fulfillment if your mindset remains negative or dissatisfied. It's crucial to have the ability to say no and allow others to learn and grow on their own, even if it may feel uncomfortable for both parties involved.
Changing our thoughts and finding contentment with our circumstances, whether in personal relationships or work situations, is the key to true happiness and growth. As we wrap up this segment of the podcast, I want to emphasize the importance of transforming our mindset in order to bring about positive changes in our lives.
By recognizing and challenging our current thoughts and beliefs, we can break free from repetitive patterns and create a life that aligns with our true desires. It's essential that we take responsibility for our actions and show up differently if we want to attract different results. As always, I encourage you to share this podcast with others and subscribe to receive weekly episodes. Together, we can continue to grow and learn on this journey towards a more fulfilling and relaxed life.

so i asked my brother and his wife if they have any requests for the quilt i’m going to be making for Upcoming Baby, and they said maybe like an alphabet quilt or something along those lines and like.
I *do* like that idea especially since it’s very fabric-agnostic so i can most likely avoid buying fabric other than the backing maybe, but on the other hand, sewing curves sounds harrrrrd, and while I might learn machine applique, i’m certainly not going to be doing 26 letters by hand...

Ok so for CR folks who want a mental image for the Crossroads Dance from this Thursday’s episode but in a little more detail than just “fancy people hold hands and maybe theres a twirl?”, im currently reminiscing hard about the Before Times when dancing was allowed, so i’ve gone and found videos of the 2 things Matt’s descriptions immediately brought to mind.
The fact that people could talk to each other and there was twirling and reminded me of the Cross-Step Mixer (though with a few more measures with each partner than that):
youtube
Cross-step waltz is a very nice tempo for talking while dancing, and the steps to this mixer are simple enough to learn quickly, and easy enough to modify on the spot for fun improvisational variations (most commonly and easiest to find in this video is people just throwing in an extra twirl, like Matt describes some characters doing in this weeks episode)
Meanwhile, the rowdy-sounding music, and the lack of lead/follow structure that made it possible to transition partners by just grabbing whoever was in reach, resulting in some folks hopping in and out as they found or lost partners is pretty much spot on for the aptly named and incredibly fun Chaos Mixer:
youtube
Both of these are an absolute blast and god I wish there was a safe way to go dancing in corona-times so I could go to a room and touch as many people as possible in quick succession, but alas, watching old videos and listening to Matt describe a beautiful ball will have to suffice for now...

Modeus’s creation theory
While our dear Purpah is currently on Vacation and Suitor armour is paused, in the mean time I wanted to talk about how I think Modeus came to be. In earlier chapters of the series, Norrix explained to Lucia about the different sources with different amounts of energy that can be used to cast spells such as plants, animal sacrifice and Human sacrifices (Which is “naturally” illegal). He continues to say that Modeus has years worth of layers upon layers of different spells but those are not the spells he used to create Modeus. He sacrificed a bear, stag, wolf and a mountain lion to create him and supposedly nothing else.... yeah we know there's more and he doesn’t dare tell Lucia (ep #7). In episode 54 after Lucia appeared to have died, we have a flashback of Modeus already created from his perspective. We’re shown a mage’s silhouette that I thought was Norrix but his features aren’t visible, especially his long hair. My guess is that mage isn’t Norrix but his master from when he was an apprentice. The mage that took him in as a apprentice after Norrix’s mother past away. The mysterious mage says “Move the body - I have no use for it now.” I’m think he was speaking to Norrix. We can obviously assume they did a sacrifice, most likely a human one, to create Modeus. I’ve seen people say that the sacrifice to create Modeus was a Fairy but I am not 100% confident in that claim, maybe 20% ill explain soon. In episode 72, Norrix has a nightmare. There were multiple people “trapped” behind a door. Locked and caged. The people inside were upset that Norrix didn’t help them. Something very bad must’ve happened to them that would make Norrix terrified. Then I believe the people then turned into Modeus. Could this mean there were multiple sacrifices done to create Modeus? They could have failed, every single one of them, until one worked. Unless, they did use a fairy and the spell to create Modeus finally worked? In episode 60, in the library Modeus tells Norrix that he thinks Lucia will not hate him for how was created... or what he was created from? “You said that Lucia would hate me if I ever told her. Hate me for what I am.”.
Supposedly everyone in the castle knew what had happened the night Modeus was created, though Norrix didn’t really explain how everyone reacted except that if it were to spread through out the kingdom his life would be ruined. I’m not sure Humans would care if it were a Fairy since they use them as Slaves and they think they’re still at war with them, but perhaps they do frown on killing them because of the whole “Peace” thing. I don’t think Norrix want’s Lucia to know because I think he was responsible for the lost of many lives that I think were Humans.
So we’re clear on the sacrificing a bear, stag, wolf and a mountain lion from the initial spell to create Modeus and I lean heavily towards a human sacrifice as well. I’m not too sure on a fairy just yet, the part about Modues saying “What I am” could mean that they used a Fairy sacrifice and Norrix thinks Lucia is Human so he would think Lucia wouldn’t like that Modeus was created using a fairy so he would hate him, but Modeus knows she is a Fairy. So Modeus thinks she will be more accepting? There are other things I have not yet understood that isn’t part of this theory which is Norrix using his energy to summon and command Modeus. That Modeus is part of him, but im not too sure about that one.
I hope we will soon get an episode where Norrix tells how he created Modeus or we see flashbacks of it all. At this point, he doesn’t want to share and forbids Modeus from speaking of it.

How much Supernatural activity have we seen since Nov 5?
Did you see that post going around about having to scroll through >54 pages on AO3 to get to any SPN fanworks created before Nov 5? Me too -- and being me, I had to fact check that and compare it to some other fandoms! 🤣📊
By the time I did some quick analysis yesterday (8 days after Cas declared his love for Dean and was immediately eaten by superhell goo*) the number had grown to >1.5K AO3 fanworks produced since Nov 5 (75 pages on AO3).
That's a lot! However, the Supernatural fandom is incredibly prolific -- it has produced more than 234K fanworks on AO3 over the years. And as my recent 2020 stats revealed, it's still one of the most active fandoms on the archive. So how much have things changed since Nov 5?
First I compared recent SPN fandom activity to earlier SPN fanwork production -- both earlier during S15 and before the season started**:
Daily average since Nov 5: 193 works/day (more than 2x earlier this season; more than 3x pre-season)
Beginning of season 15 through Nov 5: 87 works/day
Leading up to new season: 57 works/day
I also compared Supernatural to other big fandoms on AO3 over the past 8 days:
In the weeks before Nov 5, Supernatural was producing roughly the same # of works per day as Batman (all media types). Since Nov 5, it's been close to the rate of production for the whole DCU fandom!
SPN is currently more active than Untamed/MDZS
But it's not the most active fandom! For instance, SPN is still producing somewhat fewer fanworks than BTS. And some of the most active fandoms of all, BNHA and Harry Potter, have each produced over TWICE as many fanworks as SPN since Nov 5! (There are a few other larger fandoms, too -- see my 2020 stats, released right before Nov 5, to get a more complete picture.)
So how has the content of AO3 fanworks changed since Castiel's confession and death? Based only on the top tags used, here's what I see:
A big jump in Destiel -- 38% of the fandom's works used the Castiel/Dean Winchester relationship tag before Nov 5, and 60% have since Nov 5
>20% tagged specifically as being about the Nov 5 episode -- Episode: s15e18 Despair (though probably many more works address the episode but don’t use that tag)
Fix-It and Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence each surged to be used on >5% of the works (an increase for Canon Divergence up from 3.4%, and a bigger increase for Fix-It). Coda was used on 8%; I don’t know if Coda works mostly tend to be canon compliant, but I do see the Fix-It tag also used on a bunch of these works.
Angst up from 12% to 22%; Angst With A Happy Ending increased to >7%
I'm super curious whether this activity is mostly due to new/existing SPN authors, or whether lots of long-dormant authors returning to the fandom to react to this event. But I don't have data about authors. If anyone else has done analysis about that or anything else related, I'd love to hear about it!
___
Thanks to @fansplaining for several comments and questions that shaped this analysis. 💜💜 And IIRC, @elizabethminkel coined the pun I used in the title! 😹
This post is now also available on AO3!
*Note: I have not watched Supernatural, so everything I (think I) know about the show, I learned from Tumblr. Hope this is approximately correct?? ;P
**Note that different days of the week have different activity levels on AO3 -- e.g weekends are very productive -- so the post-Nov 5 numbers are likely to vary a lot based on which exact set of days you average over.

Spoilers for Campaign 1
I'm currently watching Campaign 1 for the first time and I need to rant/share my opinion on Keyleth and religion. In episode 54, Keyleth talks to Vax about her view on religion and the gods and gives him a new perspective on his deal with the Raven Queen. The comments are filled with people tearing Marisha apart because Keyleth, rightfully so imo, doesn't believe the gods need to be worshipped. Marisha did such a good job articulating how atheism can work and D&D and its infuriating that so many people refused to listen simply because Keyleth was the one who said it.
As a druid, Keyleth doesn't draw her powers from the gods, she gets them from nature. She was raised in a society that views god as little more than powerful people. Sure, she knows that they are extremely powerful and sometimes give some of that power to their followers, like Pike, but she also knows that they can be hurt and killed. On top of that, there are an equal number, if not more, of neutral and evil gods in the world that definitely don't deserve to be worshipped. Since the god locked themselves behind the Divine Gate, they rely on their worshippers to maintain power and influence on the Material Plane, meaning that the gods need people just as much as people need them. Why would Keyleth think that the gods deserve to be worshipped? Why wouldn't she think of them the same way she thinks of a powerful person? What really makes the gods different than archmages, archdruids, and even liches?
Since they started streaming, Vox Machina fought a follower of Orcus (btw Orcus isn't a god and look what he was able to do), saw the Sun Tree (a literal representation of Pelor) die, watched as Vex was killed by the Raven Queen armor, and watched the Chroma Conclave (worshippers of Tiamat) destroy entire cities while seeing nothing of Bahamet. We learn later that Vecna, who nearly ascended to godhood, was originally just a person. Since Keyleth has been on her aramente she has seen incredible power from entities that aren't gods, watched her friend die at the hands of a vestige, and received little help from the good aligned gods. Keyleth has no reason to worship the gods or place them on a pedestal above people.
At this point in the campaign, Vax felt conflicted about becoming the Raven Queen's champion and had been visible depressed about it. Keyleth was offering Vax another viewpoint on his pact. Instead of treating it as servitude to a higher being (which it becomes later but we don't know that at this point), he can look at it as a mutual partnership between two entities that both need each other.
Keyleth has such an interesting view on religion and Marisha has done an incredible job portraying atheism in a world where gods are known. I will never forgive how the fandom treated her and refused to listen to anything she had to say.
#critical role#marisha ray#keyleth#vox machina#vax'ildan#should I post this on the subreddit and watch people lose their minds over a post praising keyleth
