SOOOOO welcome to my alien world monster, or as I like to call it: Code : Epitaph. Chapter 2, by the way. In case you didn’t notice. In case you stumbled in here by accident. In case you somehow read Chapter 1 and thought, “oh wow I bet this gets less intense now” — no it does not. It gets worse. I am so sorry. I’m also lying. I’m not sorry at all ( ◡‿◡✿ )
First of all—the POV shift. Did you catch that? We start in Namjoon's head. Cold. Clinical. Calculating escape routes and threat assessments like he's running some kind of biological Excel spreadsheet. I wanted you to feel what it's like inside the mind of someone who has systematically murdered their own emotional responses in favor of "optimization." The way he catalogs Y/N's every micro-movement, the way he processes her defiance as a puzzle to solve rather than a person to understand. It's chilling, right? It should be. Because here's the thing about Namjoon—he's not evil in the traditional sense. He's something worse. He's someone who has convinced himself that viewing people as data points is actually the moral high ground.
Now. This chapter… okay the first scene, sue me, it’s hot. I’m allowed one little war-crime-y sexual tension beatdown per chapter. It’s called balance. I really wanted to lean into actual antagonism and not that watered down “oh no we’re enemies but he’s soooo handsome” trope. No. These two look at each other and it’s like: ‘the moment I see an opening I will slit your fucking throat and smile doing it’ energy. And yes, it’s giving. I love writing fights where the tension is physical and psychological and primal and terrifyingly competent. Sue me (again).
And the fact that he wins? That he pins her against the wall with her own knife? That's not about his superiority—it's about the system that created him. He's been trained since childhood to be a weapon. She's had to teach herself in the margins, in the spaces between survival and rebellion. The power imbalance isn't just physical; it's institutional. It's generational trauma made manifest in the way he can so easily turn her own weapon against her.
Then we get the Boulevard scene, and this is where I'm really proud of the world-building weaving through character development. Y/N experiencing Valis Core's casual wealth for the first time, but through the lens of being stared at, being othered. And Namjoon just... not getting it. Not understanding why she's bothered by curiosity that he classifies as biological interest. The man really stood there and explained her own genetic heritage to her like he's giving a TED talk, completely missing the violent dehumanization inherent in that level of cataloging.
Which brings me to the offspring conversation. *nervous laughter* Yeah. I went there. Because here's what's so deeply fucked about Namjoon's worldview—he can discuss their hypothetical children with the same detached interest as analyzing crop yields, while she's standing there having a visceral trauma response to the idea of forced reproduction. The fact that he's genuinely confused by her reaction? That he has to clarify that the Consortium doesn't practice forced breeding? It tells you everything about how different their worlds are. He lives in a place where bodily autonomy is assumed (for certain things). She lives in a reality where every system is designed to use her body against her will.
This section was crucial because I needed them to finally… you know… talk. Actual talking. Not knife-to-the-throat foreplay, but proper verbal sparring. And since both Namjoon and the reader are from this world, I didn’t want to do the “hello and welcome to my alien TED talk on how Authority Levels work!!” info-dump garbage. Ew. No. We’re grown. We’re nuanced. We build the world through perspective and action, not exposition. So yes, there’s worldbuilding here — but you earn it through dialogue, through friction, through character perception. This is how we do it in this house.
Also. I’d like to formally say: Namjoon being Authority Level 7 is absolutely intentional. I’m so bored of main characters being max-level ultra-bosses with unlimited power and godlike status. That’s not compelling. That’s not tense. That’s a power fantasy. My stories are psychological realism in a bottle of sci-fi, and that means no leader-of-the-mafia/king-of-the-world/god-of-sex as the male lead. Jungkook in Kkangpae isn’t the boss, and here, Namjoon is not top of the food chain either. He has absolute control over Epitaph, yes — but not over everything. And I wanted to show how that creates interesting tension. Especially when someone mocks him for not being higher and he’s like “I am not bothered 😐” when clearly? Clearly he is. We love a composed man with ego microfractures. Yessss sir. Suffer sexily for us.
Also. His threatening non-threats?? Am I okay?? Why is it so hot when he says things like “perhaps you require further conditioning” without blinking?? WHO GAVE HIM THE RIGHT. Anyway. I’m opening my legs respectfully (metaphorically). Let’s move on.
The consent/rut cycle convo was something I’ve been meaning to include for a while—I actually got an ask weeks ago about how consent works during heats/ruts in this world, and I took it to heart. ABO tropes often lean into “no rational thought, must fuck,” but personally that never sat right with me. So I made my own rules. In Veyrah, enhanced biological states amplify want, they don’t invent it. Which means consent gets tricky—not impossible, not erased—just more complicated. You still have agency. You still have to choose. And I like that nuance. I like the tension of “I hate you, but right now I want you, and I hate that I want you.” Because I’m a hate-fucking apologist. Sorry not sorry.
But the masterstroke—if I can call my own writing that without sounding like a complete asshole—is the Altsprek scene. I’ve been WAITING to drop this linguistic little freak of nature into the story. Is it German? Kind of. Is it not? Absolutely. I don’t speak fluent German so I just butchered structure and phonetics until it sounded cool and scary and mildly fascist and now we have a made-up language that exists for science, for precision, and for exclusion (so if grammar is not consistent... well, suck it up; I'm a writer, not a linguist.) That’s the point. It’s the language of the Consortium. It’s how power speaks. And I loved showing how it’s used deliberately to shut the reader out. The way the higher-ups deliberately switch to a language she can't understand, discussing her like she's not even there. It's such a perfect microcosm of systemic oppression. They need her knowledge, her skills, her regional expertise—but they won't give her the dignity of understanding what she's being asked to do. She's simultaneously essential and expendable, necessary and excluded.
And Namjoon. My problematic son. He KNOWS what they're doing. He sees her frustration, understands the power play happening, and does... the bare minimum. Advocates for "basic operational parameters" like he's doing her a favor. Because in his world, that IS generous. He cannot conceive of a reality where she should have full access to information about a mission that could kill her. The paternalism is so deeply embedded in his worldview that he probably thinks he's being kind.

You're awake. Standing. Waiting.
He catalogs this.
Most subjects require forty-eight hours minimum to adapt to containment rhythms.
Proximity sensors logged seven hours of movement—pacing patterns, tactical assessment sweeps, stress sequences.
But you're not cowering. Not pleading. Not broken.
You're measuring kill zones.
The stance is familiar. Weight distributed, hands loose but ready. You're calculating distance between his position and the exit. Mapping strike angles. Finding escape routes that don't exist.
He recognizes the assessment protocol because it mirrors his own.
Interesting.
The Algorithm chose efficiently.
"Good morning," he says, voice calibrated to establish dominance without triggering immediate violence. "I trust your accommodations proved adequate."
Your eyes narrow. Displeased, then.
"Adequate." You test the word like poison. "Is that your diplomatic way of asking if I slept well in my fucking cage?"
Crude emotional outlet. Designed to provoke reaction.
He, of course, doesn't provide one.
"Sleep quality affects operational performance. The monitoring period requires optimal efficiency from both participants."
Both participants. Partnership terminology. Deliberately deployed.
You tilt your head. Mimicking his own assessment gesture. Learning his patterns while displaying your own.
Clever.
"Optimal performance." Your mockery is accurate. "For what, exactly? Planning to lecture me to death?"
"Joint field operations commence immediately. Your infiltration capabilities require practical evaluation under controlled parameters."
He watches the information process. Surprise flickers across your features—quickly suppressed, but visible. You weren't expecting active deployment.
Good. Predictability breeds complacency.
"Field operations," you repeat. "Leaving this place."
"Temporarily. Under supervision."
Your posture shifts. Subtle. Professional.
Left foot angling slightly outward. Weight redistributing. Hands dropping to a more natural position that conceals preparation.
You're not just angry anymore. You're hunting. Most likely searching for an opportunity of escape.
How terribly mundane of you.
"What kind of operations?"
Your voice carries false curiosity. Buying time. Setting distance.
He should recognize the setup. Should anticipate—
The attack comes from nowhere.
No telegraph. No warning.
One moment you're standing three meters away, the next you're inside his guard with a blade materialized from absolute nothing.
Fast.
Faster than his file suggested.
The knife slices air where his throat was a split second before. He twists back, feeling steel part the air millimeters from his carotid. Close. Too close.
You don't pause. Don't recover. You flow into the next strike like water, blade spinning in your grip to reverse the angle, coming up toward his ribs in a motion that speaks of training far beyond rebel desperation.
Professional. Military grade.
Where did you learn this?
He blocks with his forearm, deflecting the strike but not stopping your momentum. You use the contact to pivot, already spinning into a leg sweep that would take him down if he hadn't—
Jumped. Minimal elevation. Just enough to let your leg pass underneath.
You're good. Better than good.
But not better than him.
You recover from the failed sweep by converting the spin into momentum for another knife strike. This one aimed at his kidney.
Lethal intent. No hesitation.
He catches your wrist mid-swing.
Your eyes widen. Not in surprise at being stopped—surprise at the speed of his counter.
Now he moves.
Still holding your knife hand, he uses your forward momentum against you. One step to the side, pulling you past your balance point.
You try to compensate with that twisting leg kick—beautiful technique, would have taken his knee out—
He blocks with his shin. Absorbs the impact. Redirects your energy.
Your other hand comes up, clawing for his eyes. He catches that wrist too.
For a moment you're locked together. Face to face. Close enough that he can see the gold flecks in your eyes. Close enough to smell the combat pheromones starting to flood the air between you.
Sharp. Electric. Dangerous.
Your pupils dilate. Not fear. Not fury.
Something else.
"Impressive," he says, voice steady despite the proximity, despite the scent spike. "But slow. The aurora cycles must be affecting your movements."
His expression doesn't change. Blank. Clinical.
But your eyes widen, and that tells him you caught the condescension.
"Fuck you," you snarl, trying to knee him in the groin.
He turns his hip, deflecting the strike. Uses the motion to redirect your momentum completely.
Forward.
Hard.
"Skaisse," the curse escapes him—rough, guttural—as he drives you into the wall with enough force to rattle your teeth.
The impact is immediate. Brutal.
Your chest slams against stone, breath driven from your lungs in a sharp exhale. Before you can recover, before you can even process the collision, steel presses against your throat.
The knife. Your knife. Now his.
Cold metal bites into heated skin.
His body brackets yours completely—legs on either side of your thighs, chest pressed to your back, one arm braced against the wall beside your head.
Trapped. Dominated.
His free hand hooks your jaw. Fingers spread along your cheek and neck, tilting your head back just enough to meet his gaze over your shoulder.
His eyes scan your face. Your pupils. Still dilated. Breathing pattern—rapid, shallow. Pulse visible at your throat, hammering against skin.
Fascinating physiological responses.
His thumb shifts slightly along your jawline. Just a millimeter. Nothing significant.
Except you react.
A sharp intake of breath. Involuntary. Your pulse spikes visibly where his fingers rest near your ear.
Interesting.
His gaze drops to where his hand cradles your jaw. The pressure point behind your right ear—completely exposed, practically throbbing under his fingertips.
The way you flinched when he moved. The immediate tension that followed.
Recognition flickers in his mind.
A triplet marker.
One of three neurological weak points every trained operative learns to identify and protect.
You've left at least one completely unguarded.
"For such an excellent fighter," he murmurs, voice low and measured, "you seem remarkably careless with your defensive positioning."
Your breath catches.
Understanding flashes across your features.
He doesn't know your full configuration. But he knows enough.
Amateur.
You jerk your head away from his grip, trying to break the contact. But his fingers tighten immediately. Not painful. Just inescapable, as intended. Steel wrapped in flesh.
"Impressive technique," he continues, pressing the blade more firmly against your throat. "But exploitable vulnerabilities. Any competent operative would have noticed by now."
You struggle against his hold. Test the restraint. Search for weakness.
There isn't any.
"Lesson one," he says, bringing the blade up to rest more firmly against your throat. "I've been trained in combat since before you were even alive."
The knife doesn't waver. Neither does his grip.
"Let me go," you breathe, but there's no plea in it.
Just calculation. You're still looking for an angle.
"No."

The sudden shift back to your language feels jarring.
Intentional exclusion followed by intentional inclusion.
"Relevant how?"
Marshal Choi studies you. "Enhanced assets seeking sanctuary typically utilize known safe passage routes."

Your expression hardens. "And you want me to help track them down."
"We want you to provide regional intelligence," Director Kang corrects.

Your jaw tightens. Understanding the power dynamic.
Information as control mechanism.
Namjoon observes this exchange. Your frustration at exclusion. Their deliberate information restriction.
"She requires basic operational parameters," he states carefully.
Marshal Choi nods. "Recovery mission. High-value target. Regional reconnaissance required."
Minimal information. Sufficient for cooperation without revealing classified details.
"And if the target doesn't want to be recovered?"
"Target cooperation is not required."
Cold, brutal statement. Standard Consortium approach.
"Follow me," Namjoon states, reading the room.
Time to extract you before additional complications develop.
You don't move immediately, however.
"When do I get full briefing details?"
"Si verden si nikt," Marshal Choi states quietly. (You won't.)
The Altsprek comment wasn't meant for you to understand.
But he knows you recognize the tone, the exclusion, the dismissal.
"What exactly am I walking into?" you ask again.
"Recovery operation," Namjoon repeats. "Subject escaped transport. Regional knowledge required for location assessment."
Minimal truth.
"Follow," he states more urgently.
This time you comply. But tension radiates from your posture.
As you exit the briefing chamber, Marshal Choi's voice follows in Altsprek.
"Kommandant. Wersagen ist nikt aktzeptabel. Werbesserte Assets kennen nikt unibervakt blaiben." (Commander. Failure is not acceptable. Enhanced assets cannot remain unsupervised.)
Understanding. Success required. Or consequences would extend beyond mission parameters.
Field deployment begins in one hour.
Time to discover what happens when your knowledge becomes essential to Consortium operations. While being systematically excluded from understanding why.

It's funny how often slice-of-life farming games whose whole theme is "here's a cozy town where everyone has their own quirky backstory and there are adorable animals" also have really intense signposts about whether you're doing good or bad. Like they want you to just chill out and do whatever you want, but also your broccoli are D-rank and your corn has a yield ratio of only 2.1, loser.
It gets worse when there are friendship levels, and you're incentivized to give everyone a gift every day, and so you have to write down what everyone wants because if you don't then you give Bethany a raspberry and she says, "oh ... thanks ...". Look, it's raspberry season, I want to share raspberries with people, I am attempting to engage with the game by thinking of this as sharing when I have abundance, but no, the game is doing everything it can to encourage a detour to the beach to find the right seashell that Bethany likes.
A part of me wants to tackle the problem by just making the systems more complicated in some way. You could code it so that characters didn't have a table of items they like, and instead something more complicated, that they would acknowledge the kindness of you making an extra loaf of zucchini bread when there was a bumper crop, or the care and understanding that you carved a small rabbit in your spare time to give to their child. And you could have the carrots come out differently depending on how they were cared for, and you'd just feel good that they were large and healthy, proof that you did a good job, without all the external metrics.
And then maybe people would still optimize themselves into a corner where every ten grams of blueberry yield feels like life or death, where you're working yourself to the bone for other people instead of sitting to watch the sunset, which gives no stat boosts according to the dataminers. But it wouldn't be part of the design.

The World Food Summit of 1996 approached food security through the principles of ensuring there is enough safe and nutritious food that can be accessed daily to meet healthy dietary needs and food preferences. By definition, this is a desirable and worthy goal. However, in the years since, food security has developed into a paradigm which does not question the underlying power dynamics and the reproduction of material conditions that make food insecurity a permanent feature of the global order. At its core, the food security paradigm deals only with access to food, without challenging the political and economic structures that determine and control access, as well as distribution.  By failing to address the root causes of hunger and famine, the food security paradigm makes it impossible to end hunger globally. Of course, many people worldwide possess food security, but this is restricted to increasingly limited geographic pockets. In terms of the people localised in one area, food vulnerability is influenced and determined by class, race, gender and, of course, citizenship status. Globally, “underdevelopment” and “de-development” lead to widespread food insecurity across areas. Another problem with the food security paradigm is that it is easily co-opted to generate partial answers that pose no threat to the corporate food system, or worse, that even open up new profit opportunities. Accelerated by other crises, the food security paradigm becomes ever more dependent on aid, be it through direct food delivery, cash transfers or small development projects that cannot compete with the food giants and their price-setting powers. In practice, a “science of food security” emerges, one which takes as its focus calories and the output that is compatible with precision agriculture having the aim to increase crop yields and to assist management decisions using high technology sensor and analysis tools. This model tends to be reliant on “Green Revolution” technologies that rely on chemical fertilisers and pesticides and that are tied to colonial projects and corporations, in order to optimise resources in aid response and/or development projects.  In this rationale, food insecurity can be addressed by reaching optimum yields of certain crops that should meet the demand for fats, fibres and protein. All of this is carefully managed and data-driven. Precision farming is advocated by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) with the objective of optimising, “agricultural value chains […] critical in advancing food and nutrition sufficiency without increasing the size of land under cultivation.” The framing of food that reduces it only to “optimal input” relegates vital elements of food production and the culture of eating, like territory ownership, taste, heritage, care, well-being and connection as secondary. This reductionist approach has, though, proved useful to corporate agriculture, since it reinforces the case for genetically modified crops (GMOs), more efficient fertilisers, and the standardisation of food production for market purposes. Advocates of plant breeding technologies (including GMOs and hybrid seeds) argue that government overregulation is an obstacle to achieving food security. Overregulation, as the argument goes, denies populations the opportunity to grow crops that have increased nutrient use efficiency and are more resilient to climate shocks.

The paradigm of food security is about optimising productivity. It’s true that productivity matters – after all, feeding the world requires enormous quantities of food. But if productivity is approached solely as a technological problem, it reinforces the tendency to fragment the quantitative and qualitative aspects of food production and consumption. On the quantitative side, production for food security is viewed as a challenge of multiplication. Whereas division, that is, distribution of food, is left to logistical planning. This ignores what Raj Patel identified in his influential 2007 book Stuffed and Starved, as the bottleneck of power that concentrates international food distribution among a small set of corporations. This bottleneck excludes the poor and small-scale food producers from decision-making. It also normalises worrying tendencies, such as an overreliance on industrial animal exploitation as a protein source, which has direct health implications, as well as longer term consequences like the proliferation of new viruses, greenhouse gas emissions and inefficient use of water and soil.

With global average temperatures expected to continue to rise in the coming decades, scientists have projected that warming will significantly harm global agriculture as it weakens crop yields and disrupts food production. Now, new research finds that warming will disrupt many of Earth’s major crops and harm global crop diversity.
The study, conducted by researchers at Aalto University in Finland and published in the journal Nature Food, analyzed 30 of the world’s most important crops and modeled how climate change is likely to affect their safe climatic space under different potential global warming scenarios.
The researchers found that crops growing at lower latitudes, or closer to the equator, will be hardest hit as those areas continue to get hotter and more arid.
Speaking about global crop diversity, Matti Kummu, the senior author who oversaw the study, said diversity will only decline as temperatures rise.
“If we go beyond two degrees of warming,” he told EcoWatch on a video call, “there are really, really drastic impacts on both the diversity and the available crops, especially in the tropics and equatorial region, where it’s already very vulnerable.”
“The loss of diversity means that the range of food crops available for cultivation could decrease significantly in certain areas,” said Sara Heikonen, the study’s lead author, in a press release. “That would reduce food security and make it more difficult to get adequate calories and protein.”
For each of the 30 crops, the researchers established their “safe climatic space,” which can be likened to a Goldilocks zone of optimal growth, using average precipitation, aridity and temperature. Then, the researchers applied four different projected warming conditions for four scenarios: at 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average.
As warming increases, the researchers found, the safe climatic space for crops tends to move farther and farther away from the equator, and if warming goes beyond 1.5 degrees, it could threaten “up to half” of the world’s crops at lower latitudes, according to a press release.

I have officially completed everything in Guardians of Azuma. Postgame dungeon defeated, all of the long-standing quests are done, I cooked one of every dish and made (and set somewhere) one of every structure and decoration, and outfitted my party with optimal weaponry and capped every skill grid. It is finally time for me to talk about my thoughts on this game.
To state prior credentials: I have played Frontier (back in like 2012) and 5 (last year). So I do not have a thorough track record with the Rune Factory series. Frontier was played so long ago that I only have a few vague memories, so most of this will be in comparison to 5.
Farming and Town Management For those unfamiliar with Rune Factory, there are effectively two aspects to the game: Farming and Town Development, and Combat and Exploration. I'll talk about each separate because while they kind of overlap, they're pretty distinct experiences on the whole.
Guardians' biggest benefit compared to 5 is its adjustment to the farming and town system. There are no typhoons. There is not constantly respawning garbage all over my fields. Actions like tilling, chopping, mining, and watering no longer cost RP. Material Stones and Lumber are no longer is absurdly short supply despite the outrageous amount of time spent gathering the stuff. Bond levels increase substantially faster. In terms of quality of life improvements, it is a world of difference.
The god weapons add a lot of extra variety to your actions as well. Instead of using RP for the basics, RP is now used to invoke four effects: reduce crop growth time by 1 day and revive withered crops (Drum), burn a fully grown crop with a chance to increase its crop level (Sword), gather all crops in a line about 2 tiles wide (Fan), and water an area in a maximum of a 5x5 grid (Parasol). These effects range from kinda unimportant (Fan), to outrageously beneficial (Drum). The sword is hit and miss to me. I kinda miss the sickle. The sickle in 5 was a guaranteed increase, so long as the level of your sickle was high enough. The sword is completely random, getting stuck on the improvement from level 1 to 2 for days, but then popping the level from 8 to 9 first try. It can be soft reset, but I shouldn't have to.
Bond levels are probably my favorite adjustment. While giving a gift is now consuming time and an activity action with each village member, the total amount of points needed to level up your bond is significantly reduced. As a result, I was able to max all Bond levels here, whereas in 5, when I finished literally everything there was to do, I had just gotten Beatrice to the point I could ask her out. Which she initially brushed off and then I couldn't get her to accept, so I just stopped playing. I did not get through the marriage mechanic in 5. I did here, though! I married Kanata. She is adorable, and so is our child, Tsuyu.
Perhaps the biggest change on the whole, however, is that you can give task assignments to random villagers that move in. Assignments come in one of six categories: Farming, Logging, Mining, Fishing, Shop, and Barnyard. Logging and Mining means getting you extra material stones and lumber for free every day, while Fishing will get you fish, which are otherwise time consuming and shitty to do. Shop and Barnyard assign them to oversee the facilities, with Shop yielding more daily profit by existing and allowing you to purchase items from the manned locations, while Barnyard increases the materials you get from monster friends. The latter is excellent, because getting monster materials from befriended monsters was essential in 5, but you had to do it manually in the barns with slow load times on the Switch. Not ideal.
Farming is a mixed bag. On the one hand, having villagers handle your farming is nice if you're invested in pushing forward in the plot. 5 had the hiccup of sometimes wanting to push the plot, but all your fields have grown and you need to spend basically all day gathering and sowing seeds. It could get. Really frustrating. So I don't have this mechanic. However. Your villagers are morons who will use low-level seeds, plant the wrong crops in the wrong villagers, fail to water the spaces, and you lose out on general skill EXP.
This is a good time to talk skill trees. There are three branches: your direct weapons, your god weapons, and general skills for around villages, like construction, cooking, and social activities. When you engage in a task, you get points toward that task's skill tree. However. Each day, you also receive generalist EXP, which is applicable to any skill tree. The means by which you get generalist EXP varies, with the more obtuse "Walking, Shopping, Fishing" metrics being really finicky and unclear. You get it for walking, buying/selling at vendors, and fishing. But it's really small potatoes. You can get 100 for doing a festival event, but those only happen on holidays. The real money? Gathering. When you pick up crops or sow seeds, you get a point for, I believe, each crop space. The catch is, you have to do it, not your villagers. If you do your manual farming in every region? You can get an absurd amount of general EXP. My highest daily yield was over 500 points, the maximum any given node (barring Social Activity) costs on any grid. My low end tended to be 250, which is enough for every node that isn't the final space of a grid. To give my pitch for it: I had every single grid maxed out by like mid-Autumn year 1. It is far and away the best use of your time and resources. I'll talk more about this in combat.
As for the villagers themselves, a problem is that their traits are random. They're all good at different tasks, except for the ones who come in with the combo "Slacker/Big Eater," who exist to eat all your money away. You can evict them. I do feel kinda bad about it. But also the game practically mandates eviction for Village Level 10 quests, since if you don't have the requisite number of Cheerful residents to man shops, Summer and Autumn villages will never achieve their desired business outputs. It's a hard life. Even without that, sometimes you just don't get the right people for specific tasks. You unlock Chemistry in Winter village, and it took forever for anyone with Chemist as a trait to show up, so no one could man the lab. It's a little frustrating.
As for playable cast, I do like them all well enough. I mean, except for Kosatsu. Obviously, Kanata was my favorite, I did marry her, though Yachiyo would've been a strong contender if she were available as an option, and I did really like Tsubame. While I was curious what would happen with Clarise, I really didn't take to her. Hina's still the #2 for romance. I did like what they did with the child, though. Tsuyu tries to copy adults, and because she copies Kanata, she's kind of a brat. I adore her.
Now, the big hiccup is town setup. I like the idea of building the town. I like that scenic score is a thing. But as you increase village level, you start running into constraints. You need to place sufficient decorations around the village, and you need a specific amount of housing space of happiness (and thus productivity) go down, and instead of making a village that looks nice, you make a clustered mess of crap. It really bothers me how quickly I just stopped caring about visual appeal once I hit level 9. To compound matters, you want to be conscientious of stats. As I understand it, each decoration and building provides some boost to your stats, and while this bonus is only applied once per village, it does stack across villages. But, critically, Spring and Autumn village have plenty of space for whatever you want. Winter and especially Summer village have no space for like anything at all ever. It's extra frustrating because water tiles and hills are your mortal enemy; you can't develop anything on them. So you essentially want to bulldoze everything flat for Maximum Space, and it doesn't look great. Yes, I am saying that I think the game shifts a bit too hard into specific demands. And maybe I'm over-emphasizing the need for maximized statistics. We'll get to that. But it does get really frustrating when you upgrade a village and have people move in and happiness starts dropping because whoops not enough housing, but an Elegant House takes up so much space that you have to reorganize half the damned town.
Combat and Exploration Combat in Rune Factory has, as far as I can tell, always been a bit awkward. My earliest memory of Frontier was getting stuck on like the second dungeon, because I needed to upgrade equipment, but that required gold, which only existed in one possible location at a rare drop rate, so you just got stuck, but once you upgraded you kinda shit-stomped the rest of the dungeon. 5 was similar. Sometimes you'd walk in and find out you were dying, but once you upgrade with the new stuff, you are beyond overpowered; you're effectively untouchable. Guardians continues this trend.
I feel like the exploration aspect is a bit more engaging, but in a way I hate to admit. Having collectibles scattered on the world really does give me something to do aside from try to farm material drops. I think what sets it apart a bit is that these collectibles, like frog statues and jizo temples, are marked. You cannot miss them. And because every zone comes with a new set of equipment to make, if you keep on top of it, you'll basically never encounter trouble. And even if you don't, there's a good chance you're still invincible for two reasons.
One is the town structure. Bonus stats, I believe, stack across villages. And with good management (and a little over-crowding), you can create an outrageous amount of statistical bonus that really pumps up the damage. Personally, if I were to do it again, I'd fixate entirely on boosting offenses. Your defenses don't matter. Why?
Second invincibility reason: god weapons are stupid overpowered. You know how I mentioned that farming gives a ton of generalist EXP? Use that to cap the god weapons immediately, and you will never be threatened by anything. Oh, you think I'm joking? The entire postgame dungeon, I expected to get walled by something. Instead, once guard was down, every single boss was one-shot by the god weapon they're weak to. Every single one. Dead in one swing. They are outlandishly overpowered.
That said, you do have to break guard, and I get why they added this but I don't like it. To avoid god weapons ending a fight in two seconds, they included a guard break counter, which means opponents take extremely reduced damage until you fill up that break meter. Fun fact: there has never, in the history of video games, been a well-implemented break meter system. It is always bad. In Rune Factory, all it does is stall out an inevitable win. At least in 5, if you were that overpowered, you walked in, swung and the boss just exploded into resources. Here you have to play footsies and slap them around a bit. The footsies bit isn't to avoid taking hits, damage isn't that big a threat. No, you need to hit perfect dodge, which drastically increases the amount of break meter damage you deal for a brief time. In addition, you also need to hit them with the weapon or element they're weak to, which necessitates swapping around core weapons in menus to have the right thing, and occasionally dealing with the hell of large swords and their 30 hour animation times to swing. And after all of that nonsense, when they do break...do your big swing dance attack with the god weapon and they are dead. Guaranteed. Every time.
If it seems like I dislike the combat, it's because I kinda do. Rune Factory 5 had pretty heavy button mash combat, too, and it's not the most engaging thing. But honestly, I just dislike break systems. I think it's a meaningless waste. I have to pay attention a bit more just to break them optimally, but like any other game, if you have the equipment you know the outcome before you even walk in. The problem is really just that this system is slower.
On the plus side, though, the rare material drop system is significantly improved. Basically, if you get Mauro's cap and a Lucky Ring, you're getting the rare drop of everything pretty much guaranteed. This is a huge relief after 5, where you had to fish up rare cans, which didn't even tell you they had an effect, and then forge them into your weapon so you could boost the 0.5% rare boss drops to a more realistic 25.5%. So I do greatly appreciate that.
Final Thoughts I tend to give initial impressions of games with the understanding that my long-term opinions will depend on replay value. There are a great many games that I enjoyed playing the first time through, but I would never, ever replay. RF5 is one of those games, because of how tedious farming the stones and lumber is, because of the rare can and absurd drop rate situation is, because of the mandatory farming that's constantly being interrupted by storms and mysteriously manifesting stumps in my fields. It has too much that hinders it from feeling like it would be fully enjoyable if I picked it up again.
Guardians has no such limitation. Even among some of the more frustrating aspects of the game (fishing, some of the town development quests), they're orders of magnitude more manageable. While I did inevitably make a spreadsheet, it was less to keep up with demands, and more out of habit. This game actually feels cozy; easy to pick up, easy to settle into a routine, and genuinely enjoyable with minimal frustration points. I know these kinds of games aren't for everyone, but if you're curious about it, I'd recommend it.

Rising global temperatures are set to devastate food crops across the world, with particularly alarming impacts projected for the United States, where production of key crops could plummet 50% by the end of the century, according to a sweeping new analysis.
Of the many impacts of the fossil fuel-driven climate crisis, damage to the global food system is one of the most terrifying. But the overall impact of climate change on crops — and how much it can be offset by farmers’ adaptations — has been hard to establish and hotly debated.
The new analysis, eight years in the making, is “the first attempt to really tackle both of those problems,” said Solomon Hsiang, a study author and professor of global environmental policy at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.
The scientists analyzed six crops — maize, soybeans, rice, wheat, cassava and sorghum — in more than 12,000 regions across 54 countries. Together, these crops provide more than two thirds of humanity’s calories.
They also measured how real-world farmers are adapting to climate change, from changing crop varieties to adjusting irrigation, to calculate the overall impact of global warming.
Their findings are stark. Every 1 degree Celsius the world warms above pre-industrial levels will drag down global food production by an average of 120 calories per person per day, according to the study, published Wednesday in Nature.
This will push up prices and make it harder for people to access food, Hsiang said.
“If the climate warms by 3 degrees, that’s basically like everyone on the planet giving up breakfast,” he said. The world is currently on track for around 3 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century.
Wheat, soy and maize — high value crops for a lot of the world — will be especially badly affected, the study found.
If humans keep burning large amounts of fossil fuels, maize production could fall by 40% in the grain belt of the US, eastern China, central Asia, southern Africa and the Middle East; wheat production could fall by 40% in the US, China, Russia and Canada; and soybean yields could fall 50% in the US.
The only staple crop that might be able to avoid substantial losses is rice, which can benefit from warmer nighttime temperatures.
Climate Change Threatens Global Food Supply
Most of the world’s staple food crops are projected to suffer substantial production losses by the end of the century as global temperatures rise, even with farmers’ efforts to adapt to climate change, according to a new study.

One of the striking findings of the study is that some of the wealthiest countries are likely to be hardest hit.
Poorer parts of the world, where climate conditions are already fairly harsh, tend to be more adapted and better prepared for the impacts of the climate crisis, Hsiang said. Agricultural systems in breadbaskets such as the US and parts of Europe, however, are optimized for the current temperate climate, he said.
Global warming will be particularly devastating for the US, where it’s projected to reduce yields by 40% to 50% for all staple crops except rice, Hsiang said.
“Places in the Midwest that are really well suited for present day corn and soybean production just get hammered under a high warming future,” said study author Andrew Hultgren, an assistant professor of agricultural and consumer economics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “You do start to wonder if the Corn Belt is going to be the Corn Belt in the future.”
Lower-income countries won’t escape effects, however. Yields of the subsistence crop cassava will fall in sub-Saharan Africa as the world heats up, a substantial threat to nutrition for some of the world’s poorest people, the study found. “One reason people grow cassava is because it’s pretty robust to droughts, but we see that it is actually still very adversely affected by extreme heat conditions,” Hsiang said.

Shelby McClelland, a researcher specializing in climate change and agriculture at New York University who was not involved in the research, said the study reveals the importance of adaptation but also its limits. “The authors show that current adaptation decision-making is insufficient to ensure future food security,” she told CNN.
Erin Coughlan de Perez, an associate professor at Tufts University who specializes in climate risk management, said one of the study’s limitations is that it does not take into account two major climate adaptations: crop switching or changes to planting dates. In the US, for example, corn and soybean crops have moved northward. These changes could offset more climate impacts, she told CNN.
Ultimately, the findings add to a long list of alarming research about the global food system, said Tim Lang, professor emeritus of food policy at City St George’s, University of London.
“The data pile up. The politicians turn a blind eye… Land use is not altering fast or radically enough. Some pioneers do their best. But the net effect is that the global wriggle room diminishes,” he told CNN.
Hsiang hopes the study will provide more evidence for the urgent need to transform the energy system and the high costs of failing to doing so.
“This is a major problem. It’s incredibly expensive. As a species, we have never confronted anything like this.”
