hello it’s been forever since i logged on here but mutant discourse got me thinking about basira baz aka idris the all seeing girl aka my beautiful amazing desi superhero daughter whom i love so here are some factoids about everyone’s favorite muslim telepath who they probably don’t know exists bc i don’t talk about her enoUGH

She Just Knows Everything. there is no specific filtering or amplifying action she can take to separate the public psyche from her own. it’s just There, Constantly, All The Time. however, since she’s had her abilities practically since birth, it’s not usually overwhelming for her-- it’s like being in a crowd and hearing constant background chatter. it’s easy to ignore when you’re used to it, and for basira, that’s just Normal Functionality.

she can’t not know something. she can’t not read someone’s mind or emotions. but, again, she’s had her abilities or as long as she can remember, so she’s used to focusing on what people are Saying or Doing or Writing (ie, the information they are intentionally giving out) to the point that she simply overlooks any other information that comes to her psychically.

her hijab helps her create separation between her own thoughts and the thoughts of everyone else. the physical sensation of covering and protecting her head helps her to mentally clarify and focus on herself and the information those around her are intentionally giving out.

when she was a teenager she lost her family in a house fire that she knew was going to happen. that, understandably, made her struggle for years over her abilities, her identity, and her faith. after hearing about metal betty basira decided to go to the tesla institute and join the team-- she decided that it was her duty to help people in any way she could, and even if her abilities weren’t divine, she would be failing as a person if she didn’t use them for good.
